1 you have bad experience with system-config-httpd 2 There is a tricky part to set it up and you know all those
wanna see the output of what happens if not new patch applied?
frozty_sa, thanks for the offer, but no thanks
;-)
Ok, if you want to do it youself, then You
frozty_sa, the sk_buf error i'd imagine
http://rafb.net/p/GF5lly60.html
i just installed, with any-any-113
on 2.6.22-41?
yes
thanks
will do so myself then
hmm, i did not try without at all
well, I used the thing before with an any-any. guess that the new kernel needs a new any-any
MrLinuxExplorer, you are coming from the windows world arent you
hi all
1. you have bad experience with system-config-httpd. 2. There is a tricky part to set it up and you know all those tricks. 3. You don't need userfriendliness because you know all the switches. 4. You recommend others to read the manuat for them to become an expert. 5. Well, I can do this, but it
doesn't help other in this position. Q. How can I do this to help other use it as a ordinary service personal, not beeing a expert ?
we try to keep that up2date
got it thanks
how to install bind on my fedora sorry i'm noob linux user
yum install bind
mIRCTRUser-756 : like any other package, i would say.
Actually, there is no other way to gain knowledge, unless you happen to know someone who is an expert in the field you are interested in, and is will to tutor you
MrLinuxExplorer, what is 'ordinary service personal' supposed to mean?
MrLinuxExplorer, will those ordinary service personal have root access on the box
oh. personnel?
i try and missing dependency : bind..fc6 is needed by package caching-nameserver
mIRCTRUser-756, sounds like you just installed fc6
advise you to do a yum update
ok thx
In the timeframe, you produce more than 1. read all of the apache documentation and the manual. 2 set it up and running or configurate it or check the running status. This is because it in not productive. With productiveness I mean that the webserver helps the organization, not being in a
setup phase.
sorry Southern_Gentlem, gonna ask my question again since there are more/different people here this morning
anyone use yumdownloader? it doesn't seem to be resolving dependencies and downloading them when using the –resolve switch
Why not the root access. A service web services for my personal site should be trusted to service the webserver - or what ?
I think it would be more sensitive with root access to the database server.
anybody help pls e-book or step by step web server install adress pls
You can permission anyone to launch their own webserver if you wish, by default, it is assumed to be a root activity
If there is a database hosting whitin the webserver, then I can understand some form of restrictions
MrLinuxExplorer, which engrish are you speaking?
The idea is that you should have to take positive steps to introduce security issues. Not have them present by default
Unlike some $other$ OS's out there
*uch*
Not the default one, a cloned one
A cloned one what ?
a clone is equal to whatever it cloned from and thus default
if it's a clone, it is the same, no ?
A cloned english one
Whith some modifications. A cloned is not the same. The same is the same. A cloe is allways another one, thus it's the cloned one
So, you make changes, and INTRODUCE security risks that are your own issue
not have them present by default
My keuboard doesn't record every key
are you sure ?
mIRCTRUser-756: check http://www.fedorasolved.org/server-solutions/lamp-stack/
what extra rpm repos is everyone using now?
omg these guys from fedorasolved.org rock!
I'm sure I'm not the cloned one. I'm an original hence to darwin evolution theory
livna
bryanl, i bet everyone is using all that is available
dag seems to have died months ago
What drugs have you been taking, and where do I get them ?
on this ch the collective advises against atrpms
In the Darwin evolutionary steps, 1+1=3
MrLinuxExplorer, please start making sense
Read the paper of Darwin please. I have to read the papers of apache
thanks bronx
Darwin never said 1+1=3 (at least not in a serious scientific paper). And what has that to do with apache configuration ?
You dont need drugs to set yourself in a sertain state of mind. All you need is some form of stimula. And what is that ?
It has nothing to do with apacha
or apache ?
only thing worse than engrish is crazy translated to engrish
heh
There you go. Do you see the impotance of the correct clone of the english - yes ?
Oh, now I understand,
you really are insane
do you mean in-sane, not out of sane
I apologise for that last remoark
Do you have an issue that we can help you with ?
All I wanted is to configure my apache - but it trigged some else
OK, so the first thing I would recommend is that you visit #apache. Since that is where the aapache expertise hangs out. *BUT* be forwarned, they are far less tolerant than most of the poeple here
discussion about darwin and me if I am insane or what
They should consider wheter a user is a human being to be tolerated for misstakes
I will try #linux and hope I'll not be mocked there
cool…just got f7 completely booting from usb external hdd
I suggest #apache
CaneToad, that should work after a plain standard install now
CaneToad, didnt it?
you problem is related to apache, not linux
CaneToad, in the past one had to manually build an initrd and use linux hosting expert to install
che, the install to usb went fine, but then it tries to put grub on /dev/sda, which is the other drive
so I had to do a bit of hacking around with grub
I also went to the trouble of partitioning the drive beforehand and using the expert mode to manually override the physical heads, sectors, and cylinders to ensure that heads were 64 and sectors were 32 to be compatible with assorted bioses
CaneToad, it takes the boot order you set in the bios
CaneToad,
yeah but some bioses won't boot usb drives unless heads are 64 and sectors 32
CaneToad, then you can also use the checkbox to pick yourself where grub gets installed
no, it wouldn't allow anything but /dev/sda
you have to click that "advanced grub options" checkbox
hmm… I can't remember seeing that…perhaps I missed something…but I remember seeing a choice of /dev/sda or nothing
bbl
yeah bedtime for me
hmm groan
got friends over there?
Better than that, I've got colleagues who can be sent off to investigate… once they show up to work, that is.
hi, can anyone tell me in what package on fc6 the file libiberty.h resides?
Running "yum provides libiberty.h" should tell you..
so since that returns nothing, its not available?
PlasmaHH, \*foo
?
i need an ftp prog
cant find a decent one
lftp, ncftp
yum provides expect an *exact* match.
unless you give a *, thus yum provides \*libiberty.h
a gui ftp client is indeed hard to find
it is
ao, so I need a wildcard or the full path?
should we all make one
indeed.
hm, still no result
your yum configuration is probably screwed, because it's in a core pacakge.
and this file has existed for at least a decade -_-
It is in the "binutils" RPM, and you might want to look at your yum config.
actually it's not in binutils. It's in binutils development package.
hm… k….
how secure is fedora? out of the box security, like harware encryption for example, is available?
Out of the box - assuming you don't mess with any of the security setting, pretty damn secure
how about harddrive encryption?
Hi all, what package for fc7 provides readcd?
what do you mean, encrypted file systems?
yes, exactly
you can install one if you want
not hard
so it's a good system for security, at least your opinion
Yes, BUT I am not a security expert. However, SELinux has approval from the US govt. now for security, and Fedora comes shipped with SELinux enabled by default
that's excellent, thanks for the opinion
hi all
which ftp server hosting apart from vsftpd would you recommend?
non - use ssh
i m having some weird issues with vsftpd
which gives you sftp by default
I can't speak for heavy usage though. Like if you are hosting an FTP sight which is going to be hit a lot
PinTail_b, i don't know if they support sftp…
s/sight/site
who's *they*
this is not about heavy usage. it's about accomplishing what i want to do. sftp is secure but in this case i want to setup a normal ftp server
they= vsftpd, proftpd, pureftpd
if *they* run sshd (which you would know by ssh'ing to *them*, then *they* probably also allow sftp
Dude, let sshd handle it for you
ah you mean through a tunnel
Fedora 7 DVD is only available for i386? What about i686?
i386 is the architecture not the processor
PinTail_b, what i want to experiment is setting up multiple ftp web sites but one the same ip address
yes I know, but the Live distro is for i686
so is the DVD
its labeled i386 though
ftp web sites ? Do you mean ftp sites ?
that's the architecture
not the processor
sftp is ftp over ssh. you don't need a tunnel, just issue an "sftp" command like you would a ssh command
PinTail_b, I know, but then why is the live distro labeld i686?
Oh, I understand your question, I think
evil_steve, yes, i know the difference, but have never used sftp for any reason (my bad i guess)
the i686 is optimized for the newest processors
The naming convention for Live distro's is different than for full distro's
oh, ok, thanks
what i do not like on vsftpd is the fact that it is indeed secure by not having many features. In order to set things up with this server you have to mix a ton of system features, and then again it misbehaves. The problem in my case is that a directive, user_config_dir, when enabled, won't
let anonymous logins. This is weird
Hi all, what package for fc7 provides readcd?
yum search readcd
No results
It's on my fc2 machine, but not my fc7, and nautilus needs it to make an iso image
it complains about not being able to start the child process readcd
hi
hi chandoo
how to stop iptables from starting automatically
eat-more-possum: yum provides /usr/bin/readcd
hi Tegramon
another weird thing with this particular directive is that, if it is used, then you need to create a file with user-specific settings for every user that might connect to the service. It doesn't matter if the file contains any customized settings or not. It must be there, even empty, in order to
login with the specific user
thasnks fedorared
chkconfig iptables off
Bingo, it's cdrecord, thanks!
http://www.fokus.fhg.de/usr/schilling/cdrecord.html
i stopped iptables in services, but still it starts
It was renamed to wodim I thought.
i also saved the statup list
I guess the man page is out of date
chkconfig is the program you want, from the command line
services is a one time thing. http://www.fedorafaq.org/basics/#services
turn it off in the runlevel that you are in, and it won't start
okay
i ran chkconfig command
i guess you do not care much about ftp services…
eat-more-possum: it's readcd, not cdread, which is why yum search fails to find it
sorry backwards
back on track
I tried yum search readcd before posting here, you need yum depends
does someone use truecrypt here?
Hmmmm
I guess so
b52, i have been trying to use it a long time ago. have they released any new versions that allow the creation of volumes under linux?
which directive is enabling anonymous logins?
of course
fedorared, anonymous_enable=YES
you mean create volumes with a native linux filesystem?
b52, IIRC an utility that created encrypted containers was missing from the linux version
i created my volumes with windows and ive never used containers
b52, so, things are still the same. I use dm-crypt and luks for encrypted partitions or file containers
well, i cant change the cryption type now
file containers = encrypted containers
i crypted my whole partition with truecrypt under windows
its the best software for such things with win32
b52, i know
mount -t truecrypt … ?
it was supposed to support luks too, but the project does not seem to care much about the software's p[roblems with linux
what is luks?
Linux Unied Key Setup; it uses a small part in the start of the partition to store the keys that can be used to decrypt the data that is contained in the partition. pretty much like what truecrypt does
with luks everything (keys, data) are contained within the encrypted partition
storing keys … that seems to me veeerrryyyy unsecure
heh
i like you guys
I am looking for a way to run an application from a launcher with super user credentials. I was looking at gksu and gksudo, but they don't seem to have packages. I found reference to zenity, but it does not appear to be maintained. Does anyone have suggestions on how they achieve
this?
'storing keys' is a rough explanation of what luks is about (my bad). please have a look at the home page of luks http://luks.endorphin.org/
it is very secure
ok
but, back to topic
mount -t truecrypt … ?
i have a F7 at work with broadband connection. tonight i will install F7 at my home, where i dont have internet, from DVD. there is some way to download all the latest updates here at work and apply on my home after fresh install? (via yum, or… something else?)
this is possible, but requires you create a repository on another CD/DVD. the repository would contain the updated RPMs. of course it's not required to use yum to update - you can use rpm
b52, no. you use truecrypt to mount volumes
you could use revisor to generate a new install disc with the updates
fedorared… i already downloaded the Fedora 7 DVD… where is a "revisor" tutorial/howto? i dont know what revisor is ?
http://revisor.fedoraunity.org/
but i want to use -o to set uid guid and umask, how can i do that with truecrypt?
yum install revisor
a few clicks and you'll be generating updated isos
grat!!!
great!
thanks
jaclinuxhelp, hard to stay up to date with no internet, but at least you can't be haxed either
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/Deployment_Guide-en-US/s1-access-console-enable.html
when i finally install the updated (with revisor) F7 ISO, then… how can i mantain my home internetless F7 updated? there is some way ?
b52, to clear things about truecrypt- and luks- volumes, what is being done is the same thing. All the encryption related data is stored within the encrypted partition
not easily, the update tools assume internet connection
do i have to use chown and chmod for doing that?
jaclinuxhelp, go to somewhere you have internet connection
b52, from the man page (http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=linux-manpage). You can just create the mapping with: 'truecrypt /path/to/truecryptvolume' wityhout specifying a mount point. then you will probably be able to do something like:
mount -o whatever1,whatever2 /dev/mapper/truecryptN /mnt/mymountpoint
jaclinuxhelp, what arch i386 or x86_64
got a USB pen disk ?
http://mirror.cc.vt.edu/pub/fedora/linux/updates/7/i386/
b52, trucrypt tcvolume /mountpoint does two things together: 1) create the mapping 2) mount the filesystem
What permisson do I need to setup an webserver on my computer ?
click last modified
You can get 1 Gig versions for less than $10.00
that will hold almost every set of updates you'll ever need
distinct set, that is
download everything that has been modified since 10-Aug-2007 as an example
burn it to a dvd rw or copy to a usb thumb drive
aka sneakernet
so, you download them via your fast connection, put them on your USB device, then take them home and install from there
ah i see
what file permissions do you need? the ones on /var/www/ when you install httpd
but when i set gid=500, it doesnt apply it, only the uid :/
'mount -o uid=500.gid=500,umask=0077 /dev/mapper/truecrypt0 /mnt/sdb1_daten'
i did this way
i am following the steps in the FAQ for getting fglrx on FC7, but there's no ati-fglrx-config-display command afaict
b52, yes, this is the only way to go. I don't know about the problem with the GID
0
4
is the FAQ out of date for fedora 7 & fglrx?
did you install kmod-fglrx via yum ?
sure did
the none truecrypt partition works, but see the tc partition
so it also installed a couple of dependencies, right ?
livna-config-display should help will all your proprietary video driver needs
i didn't watch, it's a co-worker's machine
Well, it should have
yumdowloader –resolve anyone ?
i would hope it installed some deps yes 3
he's a bit newbish i should have babysat him mebby?
b52, there is a typo in your command line before gid=500. Instead of a comma (,) before gid=500, you have set a period (.). Maybe this is why it does not set the gid
i dunno, i'm not a redhat guy so i'm a bit newbish on yum & rpm also
so, now run fglrx-config-display enable
ahh, fuck
how do i search for the package that has that command?
ah different cmd
yep
yum whatprovides /bin/blah
is there a user specified file which is crypted, and gets uncrypted if the user logs in and the cmds in there get executed?
u know what i mean?
then get ready, becuase if your experience is anything like mine, you're gonna end up editing your xorg.conf file by hand to disable the options the first time you try init 5.
then eventually, just when you are cursing yourself for believing that fglrx actually works - and thinking you'll have to disable the module, and revert the xorg.conf to use the vesa driver, it will suddenly work
only 0% idle over the last 10 secs (at XXX FPS)". Is there any way to turn them off? Maybe an option for the Xscreensaver command to hide the messages and not display them.
i am happy to do so
well i just did it an tried startx but no love.
yep
OK, so init 3
or init 1
b52, if i understand correctly you need an encrypted shell script that is decrypted and auto-executed whenever the use logs in. This can be done by specifying the commands in ~/.bash_profile, but you will have to solve the problem of the decryption of the script. How will the passphrase be
supplied to the script?
*use=user
this might be a longshot, but could anybody venture a guess or better as to what kickstart in fc3 does when you tell it to configure eth1 statically? I want to make it so that eth1 is configured only if it's available, which i guess means doing it in %post, but i don't know what is involved
in replicating ks's functionality for that
then make sure your xorg.conf is generic (non fglrx)..then init 5 and run livna-config-display
if you do not use a passphrase, then there is no reason to encrypt it
livna-config-display
ok
Oh, yeah, fglrx seems to prefer dpms monitors
umm./…eth1 *will* only get configured when it's present. it's a little hard to configure an adapter when it's not present
yeah, but if i leave the eth1 static config in and eth1 isn't present the install fails, which is not what i want it to do. i want i to forget about configuring eth1 and continue
so folks, which ftpserver would you recommend apart from vsftpd?
pure-ftpd looks good
this kickstart config will be run on boxes with 1 nic and on boxes with 2 nics, and i want it to work unattended for both
Plus networking sometimes Just Works these days, threw the live image on a laptop and it configured the ethernet with no work from me at all.
yeah but i need devices to be configured statically if they exist, this is for an appliance and dhcp may not be available
(statically to what i set them to)
DaHood, vsftpd. you give up too easily.
Awesomeness, even proprietary stuff (Google, skype, adobe) has yum repos nowadays
what games run well in fedora ? something like doom etc
doom
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Games
fedorared thanks a lot
zcat, no, i have wasted all the time i could waste with vsftpd. the feature i need either has a bug or the software's creator logic about that feature is a bit strange. I am talking about the user_config_dir
doom runs well in fedora ,, and it's a little like doom
hi hi. no love from startx (sick of running back and forth, on co-worker's compy now)
video hardware?
see my previous postss
ah, ati
Yep
fedorared radeon x1300
agree totally, I'll not buy another ATI/AMD video card until they get their stuff in one sock. I'm converting to nVidia for my next Vcard
PinTail_b can't scroll up. on a different client now :]
OK, well, I am running the x1300 at home, wait one, I'll grab the xorg.conf. and pastebin it.
3 thanks
http://rafb.net/p/l6zofr13.html
there you go, Dude
I want to set up a printer device that writes to pdf
How?
i saw a thing about doing that in cups
you can install a driver
then make sure fglrx is enabled as a service
chkconfig –list | grep fglrx
Foolish, the cups-pdf package does that
7' (they do not provide a static hosting url to the specific
*directove=directive
basically this is problem No.1
thx. that's with compiz?
does compiz play well with dual-head? that's next on the list once i get fglrx running.
No.2 is that wheneven this directive is enabled, then anonymous logins are not possible. The extra-informative error message '500 OOPS: reading non-root config file' appears
Haven't done the compixz thing yet
i have compiz on my debian box (with ati) ut i don't have dualhead here.
oic ok.
just got that working this monring at 05:00
3 rock
Yeah, couldn't sleep.
Where do the printed pages go?
pissed me right off
to a file
print to file does ps.
you could then do ps2pdf
Foolish, to your desktop by default. can be changed.
but the cups-pdf driver did it in oneshot
Hi
Do you know to start my Fedora Directory and test it? I followed this guide but no luck: http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Install_Guide
SELinux is preventing the printing
did you ask #fedora-ds yet? http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists
can someone reccomend a good wireless card or is support pretty good across the board
I just think this quick start should be somewhere in Internet but I could not google it, that is difficult for a newbie like me
well that didn't work
ah well.
can someone help me figure out y even with a swap partition in place i can install fedora 7 on my ps3?
what use do you have for directory server? using plain openldap is also an option.
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
although I have not set up either
how do i get a proper GCC… ?
yum install gcc
i did that, and i got that error
I can try openldap but just think Fedora DS must have somethings cool to try
emp`: which Fedora release?
fedorared fedora 6
True. I haven't done the entire setup either, quite a few steps.
emp`: what are you trying to do?
fedorared run a cod server.. i got this error about a gcc file and now im stuck
fedorared i cant even run yum or rpm anymore
all same error
emp`: which would make "yum groupinstall Development Tools" rather difficult I would think
has anyone here succesful installed fedora 7 on a ps3?
fedorared i cant use yum, still this error about`GCC_4.2.0' not found
fedorared i did yum groupinstall Development Tools
last I heard dwmw2 did a while ago. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PlayStation/ http://www.advogato.org/person/dwmw2/diary.html?start=161
yeah, ps3 install should be fine
and is fine, in f7
Morning People.
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
emp`: what command gives you this error?
sounds like either you have installed packages which were not for your distro, or that you're using yum repositories not for your fedora release.
fedorared any yum install or rpm blabla command
strings /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 | grep GCC
and it returned that i have 3.0, 3.3 and 3.3.1
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
emp`: time for rescue mode/live CD I think
emp`: is that on rawhide?
dwmw2 rawhide?
fedorared ok.. i need to figure out how that works maybe..
FC6 I see, from scroll back
fedorared ??
Fedora Core 6
fedorared yes, what about it
"cupsdAuthorize: No authentication data provided." whenever I try to print, the cups-pdf printer has been configured. What am I doing wrong, SELINUX?
We were curious about what you were running.
fedorared ok, i run 6
fedorared Can i rescue from the network install cd?
http://mange.dynalias.org/linux/misc/FC7_Bugs/Broken_Samba_FC7.txt
oh, it says rescue mode F5
Does anyone know why it refused to read those samba files although selinux was deactivated ^^
Guys, what happens when i do "linux rescue", will my files remain? i took hours to install a proper ftp server and gameserver
selinux can be a pain in the butt, but there are more restrictions ive not seen before in it, check my url above
fedorared do you know what happens after "linux rescue"
emp`: it gives you a shell so you can do things
Foolish, don't see any selinux problems here
fedorared but will my files remain
fedorared like my ftp serv and gameserver
fedorared and my users
you can use any dist as long as you can mount fedora. Then you want to chroot to the fedora system "chroot /mnt/sysimage" or something. After that you can work on it
dwmw2 did u have to configure anything special when u installed it?
no, I only had to do precisely what I told you to do last time we had this conversation. And I seem to recall your keyboard was broken then too.
Guys, what happens when i do "linux rescue", will my files remain? i took hours to install a proper ftp server and gameserver
emp`: yes.
fedorared thnks..
I've tried to do a network install of FC6 and never got it working, will be trying with FC7 in the coming days. what will I need to do after I boot w/ the media and choose network install?
specify a server
what do u mean my keyboard was broken then to?
fedorared what do i do now, im in some shell?
have a working internet connection, select jboss server hosting and path to the remote repository(Files)
is there a current list of servers on fedoraproject.org? When I tried doing this in FC6, I always got network error messages. Either i never specified ti right file/directory or such
http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist
emp`: verify the rpms in your system, which should be mounted at /mnt/sysimage
emp`: which might be tricky with your system's rpm broken
verify the rpms?
you mean the .so files?
libs?
emp`: rpms can contain more than merely .so files, but yes that is the intention
why cant i use yum install on this shell…
right, makes sense. but am i pointing to an ISO? to a directory? to a particular file? i guess my point is i'm not sure how far to drill down… blahblah/fedra/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/ then what?
fedorared how do i do this, should i copy all those .so files with gcc on it to the hd?
fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/
That installer could be really easy to do a net install from. Wonder why noone fixed it. Like "Select server from this list" etc
emp`: no.
emp`: chroot /mnt/sysimage
Thats wrong, point it to the toplevel directory of the RPMS
emp`: will get you to your system's root
emp`: but, I predict rpm will still not work
so fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/Fedora ?
fedorared i dont understand the mnt/sysimage
oops.
and os
so fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/Fedora ?
aweosme, thanks!
emp`: /mnt/sysimage is the Fedora partition it found
i trying to read for the the link that fedorared sent me am i correct in assuming that u used petitboot to install fedora?
fedorared ok, what do i do with the chroot command?
who?
who is 'u'?
I did it myself.
hey guys im having some trouble with my wireless card its showing up under network config but when i hit activate i get this error
but as I told you the other day, you're probably better off using the new Sony kboot instead
tg3 device eth1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.
still
any ideas?
fedorared why r my files in the /root dir gone?
The file structure has changed since i last did a net install but this could be ok (write down the url you choose, upper and lower case matters..) http://ftp.funet.fi/pub/Linux/INSTALL/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/Fedora/
emp`: did you "chroot /mnt/sysimage" ?
Or its one tack up nowdays (dunno)
well i have a kboot that when i do a uname -a on it gives me a date of may 2007, is that the newest one?
but basically, i'm looking for the RPMs, right?
You do have to split the URL and give the installer ftp.funet.fi and pub/Linux/INSTALL/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/ separately though
anyone?
bye all
fedorared no..
Normally I would have no idea, but since I checked this for you only a few days ago, I _do_ remember the answer. Don't you?
whats "kboot" ?
do you want me to tell you _again_?
emp`: ls /mnt/sysimage
bootloader for PlayStation3
Ah, fun!
ye, but the root dir is empty
is there a command i can use to see if fedora sees my card maybe?
emp`: should have a lot of your stuff
fedorared huh wtf. now its not
lspci
ok, it's the split that also screwed me up, so though the top level domain on the first line, and everything else (no leading slash) on the 2nd?
yes i would cause apprently i keep doing something wrong
fedorared i still dont understand what to do with my problem of the yum and rpm and gcc..
Misha]# lspci
lspci: command not found
"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su –login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.
ok, so you're using the new kboot, and you've put the bootable CD or DVD into the drive.
and you enter 'linux64 video=720i' or 'linux64 text' at the kboot prompt
and you end up in the installer, right?
i actually enter linux video=720p
ok
but i do end up in the installer regardless
emp` "fedorared why r my files in the /root dir gone?" … "ls -latr /root".. still gone and you didnt delete them ? maybe you need to reinstall.
hi, is there assembly lv debuger such as ollydbg in linux?
Me explaining rescue mode and chroot is hampered because the system rpm seems broken
cargohold i got my files back.. i was in rescue mode
and appreently that is where i do something wrong cause i go to install the packages it never completes
rpm –rebuilddb ?
well thank you all once again for being douches
emp`: neat!
what install method are you using? DVD or network?
cargohold whats that?
dvd
cargohold i still got my problems..
what Emp ?
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
well? Is the card shown by lspci or not?
well im not exactly a nix genious like i said how exactly do i use that command
cargohold im in rescue mode now and i used chroot /mnt/sysimage (i can access my files now) but the yum and rpm still dont work
emp`: then you are installing source rpm's ?
just run it
cargohold what? i dont know what to do now in rescue mode to fix those .so files or something
[root@localhost Misha]# lspci
lspci: command not found
hehe
emp`: what exactly have you installed since it stopped working?
you already got that FAQ from zcat…
good q there
it's in the /usr/sbin directory. You got an autoresponse last time you said 'command not found' which was a bit stupid (you don't need to run it as root) but would have sufficed
"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su –login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.
there it is
it says run it as root.. i am in root
fedorared i cant remember, i was busy with a Call of Duty server and it was asking about a gcc file
i still get that same message
read it again
there wasn't a full stop after 'as root'. The sentence continues.
anyway, it's in /usr/sbin
run '/usr/sbin/lspci'
oh, I lie
/sbin/lspci
fedorared i did "strings /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 | grep GCC" and it returned 3.3 and some old versions, but not 4.2
thanks
fedorared that is my problem right?
when you use 'su -', that sets the $PATH for you
Holy shit, talk less or cram more onto one line
fedorared cant i just upgrade that libgcc_s.so.1 file, with a 4.2 innit or something
emp`: if you can't remember what you did debugging this without rpm isn't going to be fun
at what point does it stop? After you've selected the packages?
emp`: were you installing rpms at the time or not?
[root@localhost sbin]# lspci
lspci: command not found
?
emp`: rpm should not require a compiler or any of its libs to work.
i also removed some files..
that's probably just yum being a pile of crap and using too much memory. How long did you leave it?
doing a network install actually works a bit better I think, because it leaves more RAM free
Hiya che!
I said /sbin/lspci. That isn't what you typed.
2.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev
fedorared i removed some of those gcc files because they were giving problems but now its even worse
so yeah its showing up
hello
emp`: so you were just rm-ing files that were giving you problems? oh dear.
lol
thought it would help, anyway can i get those proper files
baxk
back
any ideas on what the prob can be .. if i cant get my wireless working sadly i think im going to throw away nix and never learn
tg3 is a different kind of card altogether.
emp`: without rpm things are hopeless. I would reinstall.
what can i do in rescue then ;s
the card you just showed should be supported by the bcm43xx driver. I've got one of those and it works relatively well these days
isnt that a "reinstall" without losing data
(on windows that is
i just installed the bcm43xx driver
emp`: oh you can mount the drive and get data off of it
so im not to sure why its not working
try the bcm43xx-mac80211 driver instead
bcmwl5.sys
emp`: heck you had the system running, just rpm was hosed
fedorared mount which drive
the driver has been rewritten and it's actually bcm43xx-mac80211 you need for newer cards now, at least in F7
Broadcom Corporation also uses the e100 and e1000 drivers (i think)
dww2 what would be the easiest way to install that
you'll also need the firmware.
http://www.fedoramobile.org/fc-wireless/bcm43xx-yum-extras/
emp`: if you don't like rescue mode simply reboot back into Fedora, and backup all your data, then reinstall.
dwm thats actually the page i just followed
bcm43xx-mac80211 doesn't help for bcm4318
fedorared can i backup the files in a dir, which the fedora install doensnt use
fedorared i only have 1 partition next to the swap
emp`: fine, just don't blow it away
Marvel Technologies | Acme drivers and hardware on/off controlled by sw wich is pretty useless since sw is good enough to handle that
fedorared the fedora install, does it format?
fedorared does the install remove files? i mean, i can just install fedora on the drive without making changes in the partitions? and my files wont get hurt?
Unless you upgrade, but I thought you were sticking with same release.
fedorared i stick with 6
er, I think it might be a lot better in the last few days. But wirelessahh seems to have a 4306, which ought to be OK
days? does this imply rawhide experimentation?
it stops when installing the packages the first time through it stop with about 600 left and the second time with nearly all of them left
fedorared i got files in the /root dir. is that a problem?
im using 7
emp`: Stick FC7 on a DVD, boot and select upgrade. Done!
cargohold got no dvddrive lol
hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or F2) to get to the prompt, run 'ps axf' or 'top' and see what's actually going on
cargohold i want to keep my files
About all I did to my bcm4318 was get the LED lit
what install method, and how long did you leave it?
I'm not sure it's hit rawhide yet
fedorared will my users stay the same when i reinstall?
emp`: After an upgrade theyll be kept along with all your settings. Do you have a CD/DVD player anywhere in the house/apartment ?
emp`: you can just upgrade instead of installing
fedorared when i got a /home/user folder, and i create the user again, will it be as the same?
you don't need a DVD drive. Just download it to another computer on the same network, then boot the installer's kernel and initrd, and do a network 'install' (only choose the _upgrade_ option not install)
cargohold i did a network install on FC6
I thought anaconda was smart and wouldn't upgrade if you already had that release.
you could even do it with yum, instead of the installer
i leave it running over night so i figure atleast 8 hours
cargohold can i upgrade to the same version? or is 7 better
emp`: Get a cdrom, cant be hard and or expensive. If youre using computers youll find one!
cargohold can i upgrade from a network installer
Belony
cargohold i got a cdromdrive
There you go
Use the force Luke!
cargohold i did a networkinstall on FC6, can i upgrade to 7 with a network install from cd?
emp`: you don't even need a CD
dwmw2 what then
yes, you can upgrade with a network 'install'.
dwmw2 lol, upgrade ok :p
emp| Regualr install is the bong + itll be faster
Regular
dwmw2 what do u mean by what install method do i use?
just boot the kernel+initrd from the installer.
did you install from DVD or from network?
cargohold i dont have a dvddrive and i dont got 4 cds lol
dvd
i already said that a while back
oh, you don't have another proper computer, do you? Sorry, I forgot
cargohold when i wnat to upgrade from a netwrok install cd, i have to chose ftp settings during install right
cargohold but on those ftps, i dont find a 7 folder, only 1 2 3 4 5 6
no apprently i dont
try a minimal install; you can install more later.
l8r folks thanks for the help
emp`: get another site to install from..
Hi Fedorians… I have two questions… 1. Is Fedora better then Ubuntu and why? 2. Does anybody have a Fedora 7 wallpaper with balloons ?
im assuming the mininal install is what comes selected by default from the installer?
cargohold hmm k, lol now i cant get this rescue to shutdown
how do you make a folder in command line?
emp`: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/images/pxeboot/
cargohold it says no such file or directory, when i shutdown -r now
dwmw2 whats tha?
just put those two files onto the /boot partition of your existing install, edit grub.conf to point at them. Reboot and choose them. And you'll be in the F7 installer
emp`: did you use any of (su -) (su -l) or (su –login) ? or just (su) ?
mkdir
dwmw2 ok ill try
hello all
emp`: if so, that's why — man su for the details as to why
WebDragon i didnt use any su
anubody have a Fedora 7 wallpaper? With Balloons?
emp`: ah, then that's also why
emp`: "su -" then "shutdown -h now"
dwmw2 im going to go eat something so ill be back in like 20 min and u can keep explain this to me then
I'm not sure. I think the default is to install more than that. You could also try a text mode install (add 'text' instead of 'video=720i' to the command line).
or 'vnc'
it wants me to make a file in a dir .. how do i do that?
either of those may take less memory, and make it work better
emp`: shutdown is in /sbin/ and unless you added that to your users $PATH, it won't be available to you
no such file or directory ;s
init /dev/initctl
emp`: Lol, youre fun
i need fedora wallpaper???
cargohold rofl.. i am?
you mean create a text file? Use a text editor like nano
OMG, Yaah
emp`: first do (su -) ad THEN do (shutdown -r now)
WebDragon i did..
emp`: you did (su -) and not (su) ?
i did su - !!
emp`: I will assume you have no power button on the computer either ?
emp`: (which shutdown)
hey WebDragon
http://www.gagme.com/greg/linux/compaqr3000z-fc6.php
Then finally create a file /etc/modprobe.d/bcm43xx with the following contents:
alias pci:v000014E4d0×00004301sv*sd*bc*sc*i* bcm43xx
alias pci:v000014E4d0×00004307sv*sd*bc*sc*i* bcm43xx
alias pci:v000014E4d0×00004318sv*sd*bc*sc*i* bcm43xx
alias pci:v000014E4d0×00004320sv*sd*bc*sc*i* bcm43xx
WebDragon i did "shutdown -r now" after "su -"
alias pci:v000014E4d0×00004324sv*sd*bc*sc*i* bcm43xx
alias pci:v000014E4d0×00004325sv*sd*bc*sc*i* bcm43xx
what should i name the file?
emp`: It got lost in recent floods when last visited Nigeria or something
cargohold what??
the file should be named /etc/modprobe.d/bcm43xx
lol
but actually those instructions are outdated. you don't need to do that any more
cargohold lol
emp`: are you able to copy-paste from the terminal you're typing these into ?
so don't bother
next time, pastebin
it shouldnt be placed in /etc/modprobe.d/bcm43xx?
sorry
WebDragon no.. i cant use putty
no, don't bother. You needed that for FC5 but you don't any more
WebDragon i can make a photo of it if u like lol..
emp`: so you're logged into root right now ?
WebDragon i typ it good..
so dont even bother with the file?
yes root@localhost
Ok, now im sufficiently typed/souped up for a twirl in the codes.
emp`: and do you see /sbin listed when you (echo $PATH) ?
my own path looks like this:
/usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/webadmin/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin
hello Southern_Gentlem
WebDragon uh.. /sbin
tg3 device eth1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.
OMG
im about to just uninstall nix
i see /sbin ye
wanted to get away from windows but 2 days and i still cant get my damn wireless card to work
emp`: (rpm -qf /sbin/shutdown)
what package does it give you that shutdown is a part of
WebDragon my rpm is fucked
how fucked?
proper fucked?
(anyone remember that movie?)
(:
wirelessahh, what wireless card
WebDragon lol..
WebDragon when i type shutdown, it gives me a list of options
emp`: literally (shutdown -r now)
broadcom
no space between - and r
WebDragon but when -r now it says no such dir
i aint stupid i do that everyday :p
wirelessahh, what wireless card
WebDragon u want a picure
WebDragon lol
what happens when you issue that rpm command, emp`
broadcom isnt a acceptable anser
broadcom 4306
emp`: (rpm -qf /sbin/shutdown)
WebDragon /lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
WebDragon my yum and rpm r broke
wow you deleted something critical
WebDragon thats why i want to reinstall lol and reboot now
eth1 on your system is a _wired_ device — a tg3.
WebDragon so u noticed -.-
and the cascade failure trapped ya
have you installed the firmware now?
web
WebDragon
emp`: well, try "reboot"
what a tg3?
WebDragon ko
emp`: and when it's done shutting down and before the bios screen goes away, hold down the power button
ignore the tg3. Ignore anything about eth1.
that'll shut it down all the rest of the way
let's just get the wireless card working.
lol it works
emp`: ok now you can reinstall
have you installed the firmware yet, using bcm43xx-fwcutter?
hooray for *nix's penchant for having more than one way to do things
bhooray for *nix's penchant for having more than one way to do things/b
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/images/pxeboot/
just put those two files onto the /boot partition of your existing install, edit grub.conf to point at them. Reboot and choose them. And you'll be in the F7 installer
WebDragon that will work? i run FC6 now
emp`: you're FAR better off just downloading the F7 install DVD and running that
WebDragon i dont have a dvd drive
and I'd do a clean install rather than an upgrade install considering that the machine's fubared as it is
emp`: in that case burn the LiveCD and run the installer from that
or network install
Beautiful!!! http://mange.dynalias.org/linux/gsambad/screenshots/gsambad_ver_info.png
Southern_Gentlem i wanna network install
anyone get vmware-config to build a module for 2.6.22.1-32.fc6? I'm having no luck, and any-any patch isn't helping me.
download the boot.iso
emp`: haven't you booted into the installer kernel and initrd yet?
dwmw2 not yet lol i couldnt shut it off
dwmw2 i wanna try it ye
dwmw2 dont u think the upgrade will fail, because my yum and rpm r broke?
dwmw2 or will it fix those problems
chriseh, which any-any
109
thats why
you need 112+
emp`: you're upgrading from fc6, right? It should be fine
dwmw2 yes
even though his F6 install is fubared?
the installer uses its own version of rpm &c, and will just upgrade everything.
dwmw2 how does it upgrade, with network ?
ahh, I could only find 109 at http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/
dwmw2 i mean the files..
dwmw2 only 5 mb
emp`: yes. You'll need to point it at a copy of the install tree somewhere.
that _can_ be a public mirror, but that'll be slow
chriseh, use the link in the howto i pointed you to
I downloaded 1.13 today…
better if you've downloaded it somewhere local already
dwmw2 k
emp`: 5 millibits?
lol
thanks again
chriseh, yes our link is lagging behind
your
yeah, that's the one google turns up as 1st hit
I'm bookmarking fedorasolved.org
http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update113.tar.gz
:-)
thanks we try
you're going to try again with 'text' and a minimal set of packages then? And then switch to a prompt and poke at it if it stalls again?
dwmw2 im now at the grub.cfg
dwmw2 u still here?
hi everyone. quick question; does the fedora 7 live CD have an installer or is it just LIVE?
it has an installer
hey guys
cool beans. Thank you.
yes ill try it again using text
what does the any-any in vmware-any-any mean?
thanks again, any-any v113 worked perfectly
Southern_Gentlem, ping
pong
only Southern_Gentlem deserves cred
You happen to know who is maintaining livna?
that should teach me to kernel upgrade in the middle of a big project
many people
frozty_sa2, no the fedora unity project gets all the credit
ok. If it stalls again, I can help you poke at it. If I'm awake. I'm on UTC+8 at the moment.
valid point
frozty_sa2, which i am a member of, but
what are you trying to find? I //might// be able to help
fedorared, any suggestions on where i can find the kmod-fglrx for 2.6.21-1.3194?
I know, community makes it live
I refuse to use a newer kernel until they fix the screwups they made with wireless in the .22 series
daemoen, didint exist
ati didnt release the driver till after that
so the oldest is the 3228 from .21?
guys, how do i get the fedor 7 i386 OS files from a ftp, cuz there r only 12456
emp do what
emp`: either download the DVD image and mount it loopback, or use rsync
no ftp?
dwmw2 when i do the text option do i still need to create a custom swap partition?
it worked last time..
emp`: you could use recursive ftp too.
did you need to create a custom swap partition before?
ye but there are only fedora 1 2 3 4 5 6
not 7
fedora 7 is in a different place on your mirror then 1-6
where?
release
emp`: can't you work that out from the URL I gave you earlier?
move up the hierarchy and back down
i was told to since it keep freezing up but it didnt help
you'll find it
dm
I don't understand why a custom swap partition would help
say /fedora/releases/7/
dwmw2 uh
the installer already knows that it's short of memory on that machine so it needs to start swap early. I tested this
ftp://ftp.easynet.nl/mirror/fedora/linux/releases/7/Everything/i386/os/
http://mirror.cc.vt.edu/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/
cause i was told the lockup was happening due to insufficient memmory so the swap would in essence add more memmory
ok, why is 7 not with the rest? 123..
yes, but the installer creates a swap partition _anyway_
Because Core merged with Extras
you need the fedora repo not everything repo
emp`: because it's $CURRENTRELEASE
ok
WebDragon lo
l
everything isnt installable fedora is
so I wouldn't worry. It's best not to let it use LVM — that's just a stupid default. But it ought to work.
do a custom partition scheme if you know how though, and stop it from using LVM. If you use LVM, the kernel update won't boot
(until you update the lvm2 utilitity)
so at the screen where it asks me about the partition type should i just use the one that says "use free space on selected drive and create default layout"?
what did you do last time?
there'll probably be no free space on the drive. You'll want 'erase all partitions on the drive and create default layout' for the easy option.
dwmw2 r u sure that img u gave me is for fedora 7
or custom partitioning, then just create a swap file and a single filesystem for /
I hate blogs
dwmw2 cuz it says he cant find the file images/stage2.img
emp`: the one at http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/ ? yeah, fairly
emp`: where did you point it?
how big should i make the swap if i select the custom option?
correction. i hate the emo fanaticals who write them, but have no appreciation or understanding of the coding behind them.
dwmw2 ftp://ftp.easynet.nl/mirror/fedora/linux/releases/7/Everything/i386/os/
that mirror is incomplete
lol
dwmw2 ok
compare it with the one on download.fedora.redhat.com
512MiB ought to suffice
your swap should be about 5% of your drive if on desktop. 20% if on server.
emp you have to use the Fedora folder not Everything folder
ok
cause i have 10gigs set aside on the ps3 to install fedora
so I have a disk server with 1TB of storage… I should use 20% of that for swap?
I've heard some silly heuristics in my time but that one's the best
Southern_Gentlem, what was the oldest fglrx driver released?
daemoen, yes
??
which as u saud is 512 mb so ill use that
it was a rule of thumb suggestion
no, I said 512MiB. 512MB would suffice, although that's not what I said. I certainly didn't say 512mb. Or 512Mb or 512mB
swap is an iffy issue. your confusing the guy. if on desktop swap isn't a major factor and thus to be kept small depending on the size of your / partition. on server it bigger, thats all i was trying to let him know.
daemoen, fc6 or f7
f7
found the 3228 rpm finally
swap is a bit more of a factor on this particular machine than on some desktops.
now i just need to track down the kernel and kernel devel for it
but 512MiB should be fine
in what way?
daemoen, have you tried the -41 kernel yet
it has only 256MiB of RAM, which isn't really very much
Southern_Gentlem, yes. I have also tried -45
dwmw2 its now starting the upgrade
emp`: http://www.angryflower.com/itsits.gif
I cant update until they fix the changes they made that interfere with the bcm43xx drivers.
what's the problem?
black list them and use ndiswrapper
dwmw2 ?????????????????????
I just switched to the -46 kernel, which works very well with bcm43xx-mac80211 now.
good point. thats a good consideration.
I always used to force it to use the bcm43xx
With any of the .22 series kernels, the "native" bcm43xx series fails to obtain dhcp lease
dwmw2 lol.. it's upgrading.. happy now?
emp`: hth
dwmw2, you useing ndis, madwi, or the reverse engineered?
which driver?
bcm43xx or bcm43xx-mac80211?
ok, so you are still using the reverse engineered.
good.
where is the .46 driver?
latest one i saw was the .45
s/\./-
I have a bcm4306 on a PowerBook. I can't use ndiswrapper. (or madwifi, of course)
I can only use bcm43xx or bcm43xx-mac80211
ahhh
that would explain it
I *could* use mad or ndis, but i dont like that option, lol
where did you get the -46 kernel?
and is there a testing kmod-fglrx for that kernel yet?
I probably built it
3 EDT
s/probably//
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=13224
I even have the bcm43xx working as an access point this evening, with hostapd
oooooh, they fixed it!
now to try and find a matching kmod-fglrx for it
bcm43xx rarely stays broken for long. It pisses me off when my wireless doesn't work
bbcm43xx rarely stays broken for long. It pisses me off when my wireless doesn't work/b
i take it you *were* having the issue where you couldnt get any buy dedicated ip then?
I don't recognise that issue. I had some issues which may have resulted in that symptom, but I investigated and found the real cause
Hi
there was a problem with the PHY initialisation which caused some chips never to manage to transmit any packets
uthere was a problem with the PHY initialisation which caused some chips never to manage to transmit any packets/u
so you saw beacons and received frames but could never associate or send
sounds similar to mine… it complains about send_packet
it didn't complain; it thought it had sent.
anyway, try it. If it doesn't work, make sure you file a coherent bug report.
we can't fix things unless we know what's broken
does somebody know a good ide solution for php development?
there's a lot of variations of bcm43xx hardware ought there, so don't assume that if it's broken for you, it's broken for everyone
true
a half-coherent bug report is better than no bug report at all.
at least, most of the time :0
You are using the softmac driver from the openwrt right?
I know nothing of openwrt
where did you get the softmac driver?
well, that's not strictly true — but I don't know which driver openwrt is using
does somebody know a good ide solution for php webhosting development?: BlueFish
it's the one in the upstream kernel; the one which is in Fedora's kernel but has had its PCI IDs stripped so that it'll only drive the 4301 and 4303.
that's what I was using until today.
http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/
I think openwrt uses the binary driver linksys ships with, but they might have switched away from that… not sure.
but today I stopped forcing it to use the softmac driver, and I'm using bcm43xx-mac80211
that was true last time I knew, certainly
where did you get the bmc43xx-mac80211 from?
I recently installed Windows XP on my computer (I was having too many comaptability issues with a few programs in Vista), but now the Vista bootloader is installed. How do I get GRUB back on?
from the 2.6.22.1-46.fc7 kernel
thanks ill try it
we ship _both_ drivers in Fedora 7.
ahh, so its precompiled in the .22 series now completely? or only later .22 series?
the older bcm43xx softmac driver is set up to recognise only the older cards (4301, 4303) while the newer bcm43xx-mac80211 driver recognises the later cards (and isn't actually capable of driving the older ones)
the older bcm43xx softmac driver is set up to recognise only the older cards (4301, 4303) while the newer bcm43xx-mac80211 driver recognises the later cards (and isn't actually capable of driving the older ones)
er, they've both been in F7 right from the beginning, haven't they?
not that i know of.
shinybook /lib/modules/2.6.21-1.3234.fc7 $ find . -name bcm43xx\*.ko

How do I reinstall GRUB?

i had to do the old bcm43xx-fwcutter with mine…
it's possible that openwrt have switched to bcm43xx-mac80211.
that seems to be working relatively well with hostapd — I set it up today, because I wanted to do stupid things with 802.11 (forcing multicast to happen at 11Mb/s for sending flash images to OLPC machines on the production line)
interesting…
mine does have the kernel object
and isn't the binary-only driver only for 2..4 kernels?
yeah, dunno. Haven't upgraded my openwrt box in a long time…
it's a 2.4 kernel with 'wl' binary driver.
que? You have to have the firmware, so that the driver can load it into the card.
reboot into rescue mode with the dvd or rescue cd .. then grub-install –recheck /dev/sda
the softmac driver needs version 3 firmware, and the mac80211 driver needs version 4 firmware. You have to cut it out of the right version of the driver
Would the rescue CD be the install DVD?
ok, so even in f7 you do still have to cut the firmware?
anyway, they're both about to change names, and we'll have a replacement for the softmac driver which actually uses mac80211 (but which still uses firmware v3 and hence can drive the older 4301 and 4303 devices)

yes, there's little prospect of that changing
ok.
when you showed me the ko, i thought that the fw had been built into the kernel
lol
which is what was throwing me
you'll always need to get the firmware from _somewhere_
yeah, im currently using the v4 firmware
and it has to be the one your driver is compatible with. For the softmac driver that's version 3, and for the mac80211 driver that's version 4
ok, so you'll be using bcm43xx-mac80211
I never found that to work very well, until today.
the other driver was always better
but now bcm43xx-mac80211 is as good, so I've switched
anyway, it's 1am and I have to sleep.
night
find me later if you still have bcm43xx problems
you could go to irc.sipsolutions.net #bcm-specs too
