so im formatting an external hd in macosx but i need to use it with linux to so im thinking of using ext2 but
I am having trouble getting dmraid+genkernel to work on my nVidia raid card running a 64-bit system. It fails to build the initrd with errors regarding implicit declarations of functions (sscanf, printf and so on). I was following the guide "How to install gentoo with NVIDIA using dmraid". I am not sure how to troubleshoot this so any help is appreciated.
and you're saying neither work? i dunno about wireless, probably you have to do some setup, if you read the gentoo docs that should be no issue, wireless chipsets are few and well supported in my experience
bobnormal ya neither show up in ifconfig eth0, eth1 or iwconfig, or /proc/net/dev
does anyone know of any good lightweight pdf viewers?
is it possible to install linux/gentoo onto another partition from within windows without having to use a bootable source of some kind like a floppy or cd?
no
you could use a emulator, and boot it from a iso image
but cant install
you can
except for "colinux"
anyone an ebuild pro in here? does this line look ok? mv ${PORTAGE_TMPDIR}/portage/media-gfx/gimpshop-${PV}/work/gimp-${PV} ${PORTAGE_TMPDIR}/portage/media-gfx/gimpshop-${PV}/work/gimpshop-${PV}
does anyone know what causes 'alsasound' to get installed in /etc/init.d/?
anyways, JSegatto , it is senseless
in particular, the "media-gfx" portion.. it wasn't in there before, i altered it cuz the MV was failing
alsa?
you need to set up the emulator to use the whole disk
using qemu/vmware to install gentoo is a pain
dont recommend that please
read gentoo docs on wireless, i think that should be an easy one to get going
you know its a mess
the handbook should cover that possibility
well yeah..im following this howto for building alsa into the kernel, but at the part where I add it with rc-update, it fails, because it's not in init.d..and I'm wondering why not
if it's built into the kernel, then you don't do that
but generaly its more nice to install it from something bootable
its built in as a module
I have a USB hard disk mounted and I want users to be able to write and read, would I do chmod 666 ?
try alsa-utils ?
depends on filesystem
How do I check what filesystem it is?
It's NTFS.
type 'mount'
linux doesnt have ntfs write support
Crap.. What FS can I use for both Windows ANd Linux to read?
dont r/w on ntfs, use vfat instead
when I have an overlay, does it get updated with emerge –sync as well?
vfat can be both secure linux web hosting and Windows?
fat32 for read/write, iso9660 for read
exactly
ntfs3g works. aside from that, set gid=users,umask=007
So I can safely format it and put vfat on it?
ntfs-3g is _experimental_
hmm, should have said that to rakeyry
does it? wow news to me. still compiling
?
yes, but you might want to format in linux, because windows cant, it would use ntfs only, except for third-party progs
Was I suppose to do any of the xorg.conf things they did on the wiki ati open source page?
Okay.
They specifically put in lcd entries, laptop entries, and they enabled all their options
use cfdisk to format, then mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/sdXY, use type 0×0b for primary partitoin, 0×0c for logically
regular Linux tybe?
is there a bug w/ downloading the flash9 package?
Oh. I only have 1 partition.. Should I make more than one?
re
NO
Okay
what happened to the ipw2200 drivers? is there a replacement?
thanks, was just wondering because I need linux on a partition, but don't have a CD burner or any floppies, so was just wondering
how about using a usb stick
faq ipw2200
In the past, the best way to install the inw2200 drivers was to use the package in portage. This package has been discontinued, because the drivers inside the kernel work fine in recent kernels. So instead of using the ipw2200 ebuild, enable the driver as a module in kernel config. Be sure to unmerge ipw2200 and ipw2200-firmware as well.
^^
but can i boot from a USB stick on an older maching?
I don't see option 0×0b in there?
depends on the machine
just type "C" or "B" for the partition type
Fieldy, oh cool… thanks
That shows up as FAT32
good
hmm… well I have noticed that I have an option to boot from a removable storage device in my boot options, so maybe this MB will support that
is there a way mdadm can just make a blank array
-su: mkfs.vfat: command not found

there's no way to determine to which uninstalled package a non-existen file belongs ;p
anyone use gimpshop?
so i'm formatting an external hd in macosx but i need to use it with linux to. so i'm thinking of using ext2. but the question is, if i format it ext2, can i mount it as ext3 in linux? or must i format ext3 and then i can use as ext2?
KlrSpz, ya, stick to the gimp. just make sure you are using the latest.
you can mount hfs volumes in linux.
in ohter words, use hfs
anyone getting an error when trying to install flash9?
Nod-ubuntu: What laptop do you have?
all equery can do here is to peruse the CONTENTS file for each /var/db/pkg entry. no dosfstools means no CONTENTS for the package which, in turns, means that mkfs.vfat is nowhere to be seen.
hp pavilion dv8000
hey me too
fan wouldn't even spin without the 2.6.21 kernel
so you don't like gimpshop?
Nod-ubuntu: They write ati-drivers work with 8.32+
with dv8000
Skunky, but only the non-journaling hfs
Aye, I see that, and linux.die.net/man/4/radeon reports my videocard being supported.
KlrSpz, no
i don't like it
hi folks, i have upgrade my system to 2.6.22(gentoo-sources), it works fine except the ati-drivers, the dont compile anymore… i have tried the current version i was using (.32.5) and the latest aviable (.37.6.r1) with no luck… amd64 system
GOD DAMNIT
i'm pretty sure .22 is still ~, isn't it?
no its not
i think…
was this morning
/opt/bin/aticonfig –initial –input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf says with the 8.35.5 drivers it'll automake a working xorg for me.
hmmm
Nod-ubuntu: Seems like…
Nod-ubuntu: I can paste myold config for you to compare…
are you using anything similar to my hardware though?
hey, I have no experience configuring kernels and I was wondering if someone could help me configure my kernel with menuconfig so it is optimal for very old hardware
Skunky, emerge doesnt tell anything about it… maybe i accept masked packages and i forgot to unset it??
very possible.
Nod-ubuntu: I have HPC nx6325, there's also RADEON Xpress 200M
Skunky, let me check
What DE are you running?
or give me some tips to make the kernel suitable for an older computer
anyone getting an error when trying to install flash9?
Nod-ubuntu: KDE
So that proves that I should be able to get KDE working on my laptop to an extent?
Nod-ubuntu: http://rafb.net/p/SpQXXw24.html
its time consuming to configure a kernel so nobody will hold your hand the whole way through, basically just take out everything you dont need for sure, if you have a question about a particular option, ask away here or in any fedora linux channel and someone should help
Nod-ubuntu: KDE certainly, compositing and 3D effects hardly..
http://rafb.net/p/x5msbw38.html
having just buggered up a kernel on one of my systems, i speak from experience
it's masked now, should be. try to resync
Nod-ubuntu: After aticonfig your X shoudl start ok
the newest? 9.0.48.0? what happend to the older 9 version?
thanks, I wasn't looking for my to be held, rather some tips for configuring it for old hardware
or is there an alt?
I'm sure google will be my friend here
Skunky, in package.keywords there is nothing realated to that… could you please tell me where else can i look?
My alsa is broken because of this option "3 grep SND .config" there is Config_SND_CA0106=m Any help for me please.
i have 9.0.31.0 but no more ebuild for it
set the correct processor options, most of the kernel config is drivers, for old hardware triple-check you need anything to save some ram
So you're not capable of using 3d accelerator yet?
who knows.
There are a few more but it scrolls too fast
Not until the new support drivers come out?
thanks, should I try to minimize the amount of built-in drivers and use lots of modules or something?
Nod-ubuntu: 3D accelaration works with closed source drivers but they lack support for texture_from_pixmap extension, so no desktop FX is possible…
well, if you need something, its going in to memory anyway
ok
but using modules will help you if you dont know exactly what you need
Nod-ubuntu: But you can run 3D apps like quake on it…
ahh
Skunky, ok thanks
the beryl FX is what you're referring to right?
hey question on grub
Nod-ubuntu: Open source driver capable of 3D was added only recently… it is not complete, but looks promising… using it right now…
manwich lspci tells most the info you'd need to make sure you only get the ones you would use
i've rebuilt my kernel
Nod-ubuntu: Yes…
ahh
i've copied it over the old one in /boot
manwich useful command
do i need to re-install grub or can i just reboot?
if i try grub-install it whinged '/dev/md/0 does not have any corresponding BIOS drives'
I'm installing over ssh so I'll try copying the output so I have a reference while I configure it
Nod-ubuntu: Unfortunately they changed the overlay which I installed the open source driver and it didn't worked - that broken _lots_of_nines_ ebuild…
bobnormal grub may just need an adjustment in grub.conf. it doesn't need re-installed when you change kernels. if it works once, it'll work
ok, fingers crossed
Nod-ubuntu: I suggest you to run layman -S after some time and try to emerge x11-drm and rest of the stuff…
My alsa is broken because of this option "3 grep SND .config" there is Config_SND_CA0106=m Any help for me please.\\
manwich, you could also use screen and open a console behind another one
Minor72382 alsa-driver or the in-kernel alsa?
Nod-ubuntu: And watch for the releases and changelogs in open source driver…
I emerged alsa-driver
interesting! how do I exit menuconfig without saving anything
I'll keep that in mind.
manual, a bunch of escapes then say no
no, you don't re-install grub.
great
Attempting to get the /opt/bin/aticonfig line working
nevermind it asks me, hah
Nod-ubuntu: Bookmark this, maybe: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Radeon200M?highlight=%28CategoryHardware%29
manual, run screen outside your chroot, then after you start it, chroot. and new screens (control-c in screen) will be created outside the chroot
Nod-ubuntu: Though it is up to date now…
How do I list everything that is currently mounted?
*not up to date…
mount
or cat /proc/mounts
it seems the minimal CD doesn't come with 'screen'. is it under some other name?
mkfs.vfat 2.11 (12 Mar 2005)
mkfs.vfat: /dev/sda1 contains a mounted file system.
When preforming an 'ls' what are green colored files, if not directories or files(commands)?
manwich it's there i use it all the time
manwich, you're probably inside the chroot, type exit
ahh
I'm in my bin dir and see aticonfig yet I cannot execute the same line that this website shows.
damn the system didn't come up again
^^^
bobnormal, do you get a grub menu?
Did it work?
i'm having problems with powernow-k8 not being able to load, even though it's compiled.
it's a remote server
what ?
bobnormal oh .. i see
mkfs.vfat: /dev/sda1 contains a mounted file system.
i also tried to compile hosting it into the kernel (not module), and there is nothing in my /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0 to do with cpufreq. any ideas?
bobnormal btw, grub-install has known flakey times
umount it
ok, so I think I get the idea… exit, then screen, then create a new terminal to chroot in while the other is 'unchrooted'
so anyone here has got close ati-drivers working on amd64 with 2.6.22-gentoo-sources?
…. I am stoopid :p
naw, you might just used windows too much
Nod-ubuntu: green colored are executables
so
Haha, I haven't used Windows in 6 months, and counting
Anyone use Athlon64 with cpufreq?!!??!
So what chmod should I pass for user r/w ? chmod 666 ?
manwich just run screen. chroot in the console. then control-c to make a new screen outside the chroot so you can use lspci or whatever
Its not executing
ok, thanks
dont you use automount ?
Uh…
'str' object has no attribute 'insert' when trying to emerge ext2utils
new screens will be created unchrooted, sorry I missed that the first time
Nod-ubuntu: does ls -l shows something like rwx next to the file?
the error said to come here. i did the rm on the profiles adn the emerge sync, nothing.
i use : /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 vfat defaults,uid=1000 0 0 , but you might use "gid" for your mount
manwich yes.
rwxr-xr-x 1 root root
I add that to fstab?
Nod-ubuntu: It should work
env-update ftw
Nod-ubuntu: Maybe
Why would I use gid?
I had to change the syntax a hair but it worked i think
sorry I'm not getting this, I ctrl-c and it says make[1]: *** [menuconfig] Error 1 \n make: *** [menuconfig] Interrupt. is this a problem?
to make it possible to have access for a group
made me a xorg.conf.example.0 file
daimos, ich mach grad die festplatten
original(not example)
Oh.. so defaults,gid=1001 ?
hda1 ext2 root hda3 ext3
if your user is "1001", wyh not ..
gtg
Ye[p
Wait
So I just re-mount?
mount /media/sda1
manwich ya, it's control-a then c
ahh, ok
my bad
anyone?
manwich, control-a tells screen it will be getting the next input as a command
Nod-ubuntu: startx
Nod-ubuntu: Or follow wiki, if there's something aditional needed…
I still can't make a folder in there
ok, and to switch back just ctrl-a ctrl-c again?
then your user isnt "1001"
sorry, really gtg, check "google : wiki gentoo fat"
Okay, see ya
x crashed
wiki said to edit a few options if that happens
chmod 775 /media/sda1
gone
Thanks
corpix_ no, control-a n or p for next/previous
?
manwich no, control-a n or p for next/previous
corpix_, sorry something must have had your nick highlighted
ok, thanks for your patience man.
manwich no problems. also, you can detach from screen by using control-a d then log out. if you log back in and use screen -r you screens are still running
Followed wiki and editted the 'driver' option to reflect fglrx startx blackscreen. Is that good?
ok booted with new config but still slow
http://rafb.net/p/RLP1XH67.html
Err. sorry
Of course, I cannot ctrl alt backspace back into the terminal and ESC isn't working… ;-(
Any idea why after adding the /media/sda1 line to fstab that my users can't make directories in /media/sda1/ ? http://rafb.net/p/RLP1XH67.html
Nod-ubuntu: Never experienced such behaviour, can't help
what filesystem?
vfat
rebooted laptop. Gonna change the drivers to radeon and test that
Nod-ubuntu: radeon is that driver from our unsuccesfull try,,,
you have to give a umask or uid/gid when you mount vfat….
hey
…. So like.. What do I do?
I'm not sure what it means to unmask other than when it pertains to portage.
No, for some reason they had 'driver' 'ati'
man mount….
According to wiki your only options are fglrx or radeon.
I did provide a gid, did you even look at the link?
Nod-ubuntu: THis is true.
umask!=unmask
Nod-ubuntu: You can use vesa, but that's a last resort
Oh, sorry
I gave a gid…
anyone know how to put delays in the .xinitrc file?
Trouble with dmraid+genkernel. Following the guide on the wiki. However when making initrd with genkernel –dmraid initrd I get a file not found. Any help would be appreciated.
Why would you do that?
i tried exec delay 5 & it doesn't work
i need another program to start delayed after another one
i need one program to start after gnome-settings-manager so it can use the gtk themes
don't specify both defaults AND a gid, and you still need to provide a mask of some kind, or it's gonna mount with owner 7, but group and world are likely to NOT have write access…
it starts way to fast so it doesn't use it
if i manually start it after it uses it fine
command && sleep 5 && command2
'str' object has no attribute 'insert' when trying to emerge ext2utils.the error said to come here. i did the rm on the profiles adn the emerge sync, nothing.
Used 'startx' with radeon set as driver. /root/.xinitrc: line1: exec: startkde: not found
nod-ubuntu: have you installed kde?
Okay
I've 'emerge kde-meta' already
It was 340 packages long
blueeagl2 thanks
hmm, undernet seems to be down
you wannan look at the "Mount options for fat" section of man mount
nod-ubuntu: Also you might have to run startx as non-root (ie startkde might not be in path for root)
np.
man mount
I'll try this
Err.. wrong window :p
BlueEagl2 is right… root doesn't have kde binaries in PATH
So where do I find the octal values for permissions?
startx while in 'user' reports /home/greg/.xinitrc: line 1: exec: startkde: not found
startx while in 'user' reports /home/greg/.xinitrc: line 1: exec: startkde: not found
how are you with base8 math?
You calculate them.
=P
My dir to the kde isn't correct, I need to find my kde-meta
Hoi!! That's my cookie!
BlueEagl2 How is that done..? I have no clue like.. What to do.
Finders keepers!
Hang on.
Okay
never used like, chmod 755 blah?
Just need to find my cookie again.
Oh, it's 755
Nod-ubuntu: ls /usr/kde/3.5/bin
where do I find information about the celeron 1 (mendocino) so I can figure out what cpu kernel options to use
no, umask is the inverse
So, 557 ?
so, like, 777 is 000
I hear google is selling cookies
Lol
Okay..
my system still takes 10min for m4 compile
start_kdeinit is the only 'start' file in here.
help! ;(
Your system sucks
read=1, write=2, execute=4. Add them up for owner, group and others.
Edit .xinitrc to reflect /usr/kde/3.5/bin/start_kdeinit ?
Buy something faster?
Nod-ubuntu: emerge startkde
its p4 3ghz + 3gig ram, why should it be so slow
So I'd do umask=3 ?
even cheap systems work faster than this, im not sure if its the kernel config or the hosting provider's thrown me in a Xen jail
Or is it like base 8?
how would i check that
it's base2 (bit-flag)
hey, I found a very interesting guide to kernel configuration
so umask=4 ?
It's a multi core Xeon, with 2 CPU's I think
more likely fmask, and you probably need to specify 3 digits (1 for each of owner, group, and world)
fmask?
just converted to decimal (or octal or hex since we don't go past 8 it doesn't matter)
No ebuilds to satisfy 'startkde'
and a mask is what you don't want.
you didn't read the man page I told you to read. stop asking questions and read, then come back.
Are you sure its not emerge start_kdeinit ?
Ohh fmask
I need fmask and dmask
Nod-ubuntu: emerge kdebase-startkde
so its probably it's used for xen? how can i check if im in xen
yes
honestly its so #!@#!@@#! slow
I'm trying to configure my nvidia driver to work and i'm following the gentoo-wiki and on the part it says 'xdpyinfo | grep Composite' nothing happens.
Nod-ubuntu: start_kdeinit is not what you need….
so fmask=333 dmask=333 ?
well, you don't NEED them both, you could be really sloppy and use umask=000, but that makes everything, dirs and files, be 777, and that's usually not a good idea.
okay, kde-base is working
PM?
I don't want to be slopyy =/
linux?
the dmask needs to be 0 1 or 2, or you won't be able to cd into the dir
If this works I'm going to have to celebrate
Would someone be kind enough to send a /ping blueeagle so my broken client can time out?
0 = read, 1 = write?, 2 = execute?
BTW: Whats the bogomips value?
no. (:
Lovely.
Any ideas?
when you ls -l something, it's got 7 letters, to represent permissions
kde-base/kicker-3.5.5 failed. pasting log
in proc cpuinfo cpu MHz is 3000.219
or… 10, sorry
I follow
bobomips is 6000.70
Hmm, CPU is running alright then
1, 2 and 4. However since you're running a mask you need to not add the ones you don't want (ie 044 is the mask to permissions 755)
can't count. anyway. first is a single thing, d for dir, l for symlink. then 3 groups of 3, for owner, group, and world
http://rafb.net/p/4oekw377.html
this is wher eyou get the octal stuff. an x=1, w=2, r=4
stage3-i686 is right, yes?
Ohhh
Nod-ubuntu: I'm afraid you need to recompile kdelibs
what should the -march be set to for Centrino Duo T2500 processor?
ehh.. you need to add the ones you don't want
Hmm
This is confuzzling
so, -wx is 3, r-x is 5, rw- is 6, etc. and you specify 1 digit for each of the 3
Just saw that
emerge kdelibs aye?
You add them up. no?
correct.
is there a flash alternative anymore?
what is the lightest WM that supports real-time transparency? xfce?
So I want a 666 ?
can someone report what outputs when, at a terminal, you do ctrl+v then ctrl-Right Arrow, and what terminal/distribution you're using? I'm trying to figure out why my screen keybinding for ctrl-right isn't remaining constant between different distros/terms
What I don't get is why we can't see the slowness. Either dmesg should have a bunch of I/O timeouts or hdparm should show crap for the harddisk
execpt that a umask is the bitwise or (or is it and) of the file permissions, so you add up what you want, and then subtract it from 7
that would be read-only when used as a mask.
Oh so, I want 111 ?
that would be write and execute only when used as a mask (doesn't make sense)
Nod-ubuntu: Prepare for long night
for an fmask, sure.
Huh, why is that?
yeah i dont understand either
is there anyone using 2.6.20 kernel? Is there dyntick
Its already 4am here. lol
PIO mode or some sutch would explain it, but I think it all checked out?
And dmask?
222 would be read and execute when used as a mask (ie you mask 2 which is write)
there are errors in dmesg about some things not supported on the SATA drives
000 would be read, write and execute when used as a mask.
I don't want execute
for your dirs, you want 777, or 555, or some combo, you need the x for a dir, or you can't cd into it
Anyone have experience configuring nvidia video drivers?
Nothing strange in what you showed me earlier.
amn…
Damn*
what do you want. I missed that part.
So I need a 002 ?
Hold on
Is this going to take a while, if so I'mma hit the bed now
yes
Lovely =D
Hello, can anyone help me with why emerge has installed the latest flashplayer r48, yet when running flashplayer and showing the about info still reports 9.0.31? I have the source package downloaded and moved to /usr/portage/distfiles, plus unmasked it in /etc/portage/package.unmask
(I think, I don't have a stupid fat filesystem here to play with) mount it like that and ls -l to make sure we've picked the right mask(s)
it is 9.0.31-r48 isn't it?
nope 9.0.31.0
i hope you were taking notes, this is one of those complex subjects that nobody understands the first time around. (:
is there anything you can suggest?
Anything wierd in hdparm -I /dev/xxx
The packages with different -rXX numbers are still the same source versions only compiled with different patches and/or flags if I am not mistaking.
ie it's not a real version upgrade.
it says maxtor, all looks OK
Thanks for all your help and patience. I'm going to bed now, I'll get kde working later today!
is there a place to see a basic set of USE flags recommended for various types of systems?
Under dma/pio what has a * next to it?
The security hole it is intending to fix still exists as far as i can see, running a the modified flv file crashes it flawlessly
2: error: asm/page.h: No such file or directory = Stupid genkernel. Why is there no
equery b asm/page.h
um. that's. odd.
what should the -march be set to for Centrino Duo T2500 processor, pentium-m or prescott?
wiki vice-versa safe_cflags
vice-versa: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags
yeah, that's where I got my current two choices
My system doesn't have asm/page.h
and which package contains equery?
gentools
assuming gentoolkit
It has asm-i386/page.h and all the others asm-xxxx/page.h
So it should be fmask=value, dmask=value or what is proper syntax? I keep getting an error.
Aah, forgot what century I'm in, computers still need precise names here
vice-versa: have a read of the gcc man page. prescott is the "newer" of the 2, but you need to make sure you actually have all the processor caps that it would call (like make sure you've got sse3, aka pni, before you tell it prescott, or you could make stuff that won't work on your system)
udma6
i think its cpu-throttling and they've got me in a virtual environment
hehe. No hits on equery
Thats is also correct.
if that's not it, it must be a kernel option
start with something like this: mount -odmask=blah,fmask=blah,gid=blah,uid=blah /dev/blah /mnt/blah
ok, thanks
ie, make it work on the command line first… and yes, it SHOULD be ,
odmask?
hmm
i can't umount /mnt/gentoo
it says it is busy
cd /
you need to not be in the directory you're attempting to unmount
-o option, dmask is the first option
Hmm, aah I've no experince with virtual farm Linuxes.
yeah i'm in /
on the livecd
and it wont umount /mnt/gentoo/dev
having beryl finally running with no DE i kind of like it its pretty fast
fuser -k also doesn't work
are you still in the chroot?
Good, now uninstall since Beryl is dead long live Compiz Fusion or whatever they called the merge
looks like I'm good to go with prescott, thanks again
Not yet in Gentoo, so don't do it right now. :p
any thoughts on the missing page.h? Older kernel perhaps?
i thought beryl was the fork of compiz
It's not missing. it's asm-i386/page.h
dunno. very. odd.
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r5 (/usr/src/linux-2.6.19-gentoo-r5/include/asm-ppc/page.h)
so symlink it?
Offcourse not, something is messed up, there is no reason you should be syming things
0
guys to be able to use gtk2 themes in gnome do i need to set use flag as gtk2 in make.config ?
anyone using Smb4k?
Huh, I don't have that
What kernel are you messing with?
mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) when I try to access windows shares
linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r8 running genkernel –dmraid initrd
Did you forgot
to add cifs to the kernel?
asm-x86_64
will look it up sorry it's my first gentoo install
apperantly it was symlinked already.
http://rafb.net/p/jCHIMv71.html =| Still buggy
-o is only for when using mount on the command line
=|
I'm lost, I don't have that symlink in my linux source
that's one of the symlinks that usually happens when you config a kernel
Still get an error
did it work from command line?
under what do I look for it?
Woot it works =D
Sorry, forgot to get rid of -
not sure what put it there. Should I unmerge and re-emerge the kernel source you think?
My kernel was made with genkernel and has no sutch link
hehe it worksss
cool. (:
what's the command to force the kernel to use vesafb?
in grub
everytime i do vga=0×318 i get a black screen
did you try vga=ask
?
not sure if it will help tho.
i'll try that BlueEagl2
thanks
but actually
does anyone know how to make gentoo minimal cd boot up from usb? i searched all over google and found tutorials, i followed them successfully but when gentoo is going too boot up it says root block device not found
an easy question here… how do i set the http proxy for emerge? does it use the Http flag in make.conf?
what is a good program to convert audio files? I have some FLAC files I saved from a CD and I want them in mp3 format now for my mp3 player
before, i had someone do a kernel configuration for me and it seemed to work fine and i think it involved a command in grub
err… so my kernel compile went bad and nothing works now
isn't that covered in the make.conf.example?
Skunky, is it….
does anyone know how to make gentoo minimal cd boot up from usb? i searched all over google and found tutorials, i followed them successfully but when gentoo is going too boot up it says root block device not found
bdoes anyone know how to make gentoo minimal cd boot up from usb? i searched all over google and found tutorials, i followed them successfully but when gentoo is going too boot up it says root block device not found/b
I need this laptop for tomorrow afternoon, is it worth trying again?
or should I go with another distro until I have more time?
i think i figured out how to check
if i compile the hypervisor client support and it speeds up, that would be one proof
FunkyELF, flac to decode them to wav, lame to encode to mp3.
does anyone know how to make gentoo minimal cd boot up from usb? i searched all over google and found tutorials, i followed them successfully but when gentoo is going too boot up it says root block device not found
anyone know the kernel command to force vesafb with grub?
so nobody knows how to boot gentoo from usb
set bios to boot other devices
Seems as the kernel doesn't know which device is your usb-disk.
wekk
well
then change your boot sequence so that it gets used
this is a usb install
you might need to manually mkdode an entry for it.
i use debian atm so im new to the whole ports system
and gentoo
but i would like to try gentoo
Well it should be irrelevant as the kernel is the same on both distros. However the other distro might have already had /dev-entries for the usb-disk.
Draconx, is there a good GUI program for that with good defaults for all the LAME options?
im on debian atm looking for info
parameter in /etc/profile get put?
learn lame by args
I don't know if minimal has all the usb stuff, but you need the right root=/dev/xxx
it's so much better
FunkyELF, wouldn't know… lame –abr 256 is generally sufficient.
my preference is preset standard
yea
–preset standard
on debian its /dev/sda1
but when i try to boot it off gentoo, it doesnt work
I have the strange feeling I screwed up the kernel configuration
that would give you a panic, right?
Xiaof, I'll take a look
i tried 3 parameters so far, cdroot , real_root=/dev/sda1, root=/dev/sda1
well
when i do /dev/sda1
it says invalid
when i try to
/dev/hdb
then it gives panic
Boot debian and use the alternative howto to install gentoo through it?
any other sata/scsi disks on the system?
no the laptop has a 40 gb hdd and my flash drive connected
miravlix, debian os or debian installer?
I enable it in the kernel but I still get same error
boot debian and get to a shell, Gentoo minimal isn't all that fancy
Well then the best host thing I can think of is that you've got either no entry for /dev/sda1 or that the usb-disk isn't partitioned so the root is on /dev/sda
Those are just my un-educated guesses tho.
You need livecd for a fancy installer
lol
lol mirav
hehe
i dont mind either installers
i use debian text base installer
Hi… I'm puzzling over NUMA kernel configs. I have a Pentium D in an ASUS P5LD2-V motherboard. I've got the 64bit flavor of gentoo. I believe that by default some NUMA kernel config things were enabled. Is that right?!?
i do have the feature of debian gui installer
but the text base is faster
anyone wanna help me with my kernel config?
emerge is giving circular dep warnings on my newly installed system. how long should I wait to resync portage and try again (as the docs suggest)?
Gentoo installation is a bunch of wgets and nano -c files
with genkernel I think numa is a module.
lol
Miravlix, thought it was nano -w
need to read the howtos and handbook
i get a black screen when i do vga=0×318
i did
…
Does gentoo-source-2.6.20 support dyntick?
and i only have vesafb built into the kernel
I emerged tor, and started it via init.d script. but still doesn't see it listening on socks port when I exec netstat -p -l command
handbook said to download 1 of the .isos
it used to work, but last install someone helped me here
Possible, I use nano compiled with it build in instead. :p
i downloaded minimal iso since its most convenient
if i burn it to a cdrom i would not have a problem, but i would rather save the cdrom since its only 50 mb
try vga=791
If you want to try Gentoo, then LiveCD is a good way to do that
what's 791?
i hope it's 1024×768
like i used to have
hmm
i had the live cd before
it boots up to gnome
la la la. *YAWN*
and its blue right?
Read the documentation for vesafb
Or use vesatng instaeadm and yes it is 1024×768
It's in linux/Documentation somewhere
is there a way to chroot into a specific user?
you mean su?
no
chroot su user
hmm
I don't see numa as a module.. it is part of cpu config.
would that allow a user to break into root?
only root can chroot
iamben, yeah, i know that
chroots aren't even close to a good solution for preventing users from getting to stuff they shouldn't, unless you run a hardened kernel
so only root can break into root
Fieldy, what is?
i'm considering a vm
Sounds to me like your unsure of Linux security and therefor is trying to protect yourself from mistakes
eh?
Normal linux security is multi user based and doesn't need chroot
i'm working on a system that allows users to arbitarily run code on the server :/
(not my choice)
I've followed a couple tutorials to try to get suspend to ram working on my T43 but I'm not having any success. Can anyone tell me what I can do to start debugging the issue?
I'm thinking I should turn NUMA off on that pentium D…. anyone agree?
'¶
so it's probably either chroot or some virtualized server
'¶}
anyone wanna see my kernel .config file and see if anything is wrong
You use chroot to lock down applications in case they error out and letting random people form the pipes get into your system
CGI044, sorry, nobody speaks chinese here
Miravlix, well, yeah
i can't get video without not using a vga= arg
asm-x86_64
uu
ë'+
„
thats a lotta negatives
Please fix your keymap.
english please
if someone knows of a chineese gentoo channel, please point him there
I thought it didn't work
maybe i dont have the font but i dont see the chars your typing
he's typing chinese
i see them, some sort of chinese
It's UTF-8
i see question marks, i thought he was just very curious
CGI044, go to #gentoo-cn
well it still sais file not found on asm/page.h
ok
let me rephrase
just sent an accusative email to my hosting provider
i can't get video when i use a vga= arg
my old kernel worked great but i lost the .config file
;/
what about /proc/config?
does anone know offhand what the "thing" was called where you could type RAlt+~ then n, and have a spanish n~ character (and others)
full name is config.gz
i have formatted since the last install
miravlix, so i should just get the livecd?
i built a new kernel going on what i could remmeber
i disabled radeonfb
It's a full copy of your .config from the running kernel
and only did vesafb
would anyone feel like looking at my USE flags in make.conf and tell me what stuff really needs to be removed/added? I cant update world and I only installed yesterday
but i get a black screen with vesafb
and linux still boots
Well, if you didn't erase the old kernel you could boot it
Do you think this should be filed as a genkernel bug? dmraid is still keyworded as ~amd64 so it might be premature to report it perhaps?
well
Yeah, LiveCD's is great for checking stuff out, IMO.
what does the livecd load that i'm not loading is my question then
sure, i have nothing better to do
the live cd seems to load what my card wants
Can someone help me? I emerget GDM and set it as was told in gentoo wiki but now when I rebooted it gave me error message that GDM: Xserver not found
did you install X?
X?
next time follow the offical guide for gnome
Yeah Xwindows
I am in graphical mod
I am running KDE
actually it gives the same error w/o –dmraid
I can get to graphical mod by running startx
Aah, have to check /etc/X11/gdm config then I guess
steveno http://rafb.net/p/cQW4a214.html
How do I wget all files recursively from a certain URL?
custom.conf
I copied the flags from another athlon system here
man wget recursive is an option
thats probably not a good idea
I pasted my custom.config : http://rafb.net/p/0WOjXL74.html can someone look and tell me what I did wrong?
Even wget -h show that.
the man-page suggests adding the –recursive flag
please
I was in a lazy mood that day I guess, didnt want to type them all. I guess I will start from scratch then update. I was hoping you might say that one or two flags were an issue, but alas no. :}
steveno^^
uh, more than one or two probably
yeah, I understand
hehe
Would you be so kind and look in : http://rafb.net/p/0WOjXL74.html and tell me what's wrong?
do you see any flags that are ones you would reccomend be elswhere than make.conf steveno?
i don't understand your question
hey… any quodlibet users/developers here? what's the deal with playing the .m4a files?
Did you close X before you fired up gdm?
you mean make me them for single packages instead?
yes, in package.use instead
I rebooted
that happened when I rebooted
that depends on what packages you have installed
what you mean fired up GDM?
ctrl-alt-backspace then as root /etc/init.d/xdm start saves you a reboot
Then check .xession-errors or /var/log/X*.log
so everything is fine with my conf file?
oh ok
none yet, really. the box is gonna be a minimal dvr (not MythTV) just dvr. steveno
teach CGI164 chinese
ru guo ni yao xue han yu, ke yi qu #gentoo-tw/#gentoo-cn. Zai #gentoo ching yong yin wen.
I can make gdm run, but not everyone elses.
well that helps a lot actually
ok
so you won't have a gui like Gnome or KDE then right?
Good morning.
There might be amillion details I've no experince with that breaks things, I'm hopeing one of the logs will give use the clue we need
nah, as light a wm as I can stand (this is a Ath850 w/ 256MB) steveno
nah, as light a wm as I can stand (this is a Ath850 w/ 256MB) steveno
should I have entries for /dev/cdrw and /dev/dvdr in fstab?
thanks for helping with this steveno, I would hate to get into the install and have to rebuild huge #'s of files because the flags had to be changed at a late stage
yeah, i'm deleting most of these, i'll repaste for you
cool
Draconx, i encoded one using –abr 256 and when playing it in audacious I only see one bitrate
Well I'm giving up on getting gentoo on the raid for now. I'll try again when ubuntu breaks next time.
Damn, i merged bugzilla and i can run it.
bugs tend to crawl
i have gentoo on raid
but its md-style, not hardware-raid style
does this look any better http://rafb.net/p/nz21NP87.html
The same driver that allows Ubuntu to work with your raid shoudl work with Gentoo as well.
oh yeah man
feal it
he cant get genkernel to make the raid ramdisk
What;s the problem?
make sure when you run emerge again you use the –newuse option
much lighter. I dont have a dvd drive in the box. is the dvd flag needed
nope
there are one or two you might want to look, i'm not exactly sure about some of them
there is nothing needed for my rage128pro All-in-Wonder (yeah it ancient, don't laugh)?
like for example, you can probably remove xpm, now that i've looked it up
hi
oh yeahh
good song man
a question, the wine-9999 ebuild, doesn't show the output when getting the sources from git?
you'll have to ask someone else about that, but my guess is no
erg0t, luv the nick
lol, thx
ok I figured the AIW flags(if any) would be per pkg and not global
Initialized empty Git repository in /usr/portage/distfiles/git-src/wine/
how do I add volume control to system tray in KDE?
and nothing
cesco kmix
thank you
hmm… does anyone here know distros well? Should I use fluxbuntu or zen walk?
I just need something temporary until I can set my gentoo back up
oh and it will be for programming, nothing else
C/C++ and java
Hrrm, weird, my mouses scroll wheel just decided to work as page up and down in my screen text mode irc client
err, not work
is the focus on the irc client window?
It's not with no change by me, working as up and down arrows scrolling the input line
It's nice, but how the heck did it happend
magic
It's still page up/down in two other xterms
i was gonna say that
xD
hmm… beats me =S
err do you guys know if fluxbuntu or if zenwalk is lighter?
actually which is better suited towards programming
I use screen and text mode emacs for codeing, soanything fancy like flubox is overkill in my book
=S emacs to code for java? what about debugging?
Debugging?
I write perfect code.
=P well what about debugging for the rest of us humans =P
I'm a C/C++ code actually, GNU's debugger is fine in text mode too
GDB is not fine .' I can't stand it
I've been pampered with eclipse for too long =P
kids these days…
ahaha indeed =P
In my day all we had was debug both to write and test
once you get a taste of juice, plain water doesn't do it anymore =P
I don't know… I think I have to use GDB anyways for this course… but man java debug is a must
The Unix style command line is the most powerful tool in the universe, no GUI will ever beat it
ahh it's powerful, but slow
I might be running X windows, but I just fire up xterms in it. :p
thats wrong for people who cant type
It's definately not slow
not slow.
is slow if you dont have the tab key
I can click and hit shift+B (breakpoint) alot faster than I can scroll and select a number =/
There is *nothing* you can do faster in a GUI than on a command line
I take more time opening up dolphin and going to a certain folder than opening a xterm and typing cd (folder)
its also wrong for working with large quantities of information that are best represented through visuals
how about describe a 3d space
except internet browsing
The thing with GUI is that dumb people can easier use it
Links ftw
=S heyy
links works great, except that my google page doesn't display properly
Sorry, but thats true
links + gpm ftw, but its still slower than firefox
If you don't want to learn you can much easier use a GUI without learning anything
except for pages with embedded media
I have no problem with learning… but I used to be a FPS gamer. Clicking is pretty much instant for me 0.o
That is the super strength of the GUI that you can take a caveman and plop him down in front of it and in a few minutes he can play minesweeper and eat the mouse
ahaha
hmm… maybe you guys can help me avoid this whole fluxbuntu/switching dilema
I need to get my system back up asap
I think I may have improperly compiled a kernel, and now I'm getting seg faults and kernel panics and all that crap
recompile the kernel?
is it worth working on the system? or should I just reinstall everything?
mmm, maybe bad ram
Always use mouse with tails when letting cavemen use your computer, that way you can pull out the mouse again
no good, gcc is corrupted or something
did you run memtest86?
make menuconfig doesn't work =/
Start up the boot cd and chroot in again like when you installed and recompile
did you compile for the right architecture? did you copy and load the right kernel image?
it runs the liveCD fine
I may have cut off the compile 1/2 way though =S
=S is there any way to get my kernel options back?
do what Miravlix tells you to, thats the best to do, unless you need it SO FAST that you should just reinstall everything and be sure that it will work
Unless you used the livecd installer offcourse, then you have lots of work ahead of you to learn chroot. :p
yes, backup your .config file
But hey GUI's is faster…
steveno what is the reason to not have firefox in the globals?
Unless things goes horrible wrong and you have no clue, so you need to spend 38477 hours catching up.
I did it with CLI =P
Lol, I consider it more work in the long run with the installer
the better question really is "why would you have firefox in the globals?"
there's no need for it in my opinion, especially for a dvr
where's the .config file? /usr/src?
theres two config files, .config and .config.old, in /usr/src/linux
confirm that to me, i could be wrong
Ever since I did a CLI install a year ago and buckled down, I ended up her, on DWM with the only GUI app being firefox :p
there's no need because very few packages have a firefox flag. it would better on a per package basis probably
just copy the .config file to your new system and type
You could prolly even do root=/dev/sda1 when booting the LiveCD
ok,
'make oldconfig' on the new kernel source directory, it will get the .config and ask you for unset/new configurations
To get a usable system, though you might have to copy /lib/modules from livecd first
then just make && make modules_intall and copy the kernel image to /boot
I have apache and php already installed, but I want a way for someone to upload files via a web page on the server to my hd, how should I go about setting this up?
how do I get back to /usr/src in the first place? =/ both recovery and normal kernel panic
where are you?
liveCD or what?
I just stuck the 2007.0 gentoo min cd into the drive
I can't boot up normally
mount your HDD and cd in there, i dont think you need to chroot
oh man thank you. I never understood the whole chroot step in the install
i never used any of gentoo's live CDs, so idk if you need to modify fstab
does anyone have a P4
err it's not a liveCD I think, just the regular install cd
teach bobnormal ask
Just ask, don't ask to ask, don't ask who's familiar. Don't ask if anyone knows about it. Just ask the question, it's the easiest way to get people to answer
it just boot iso-linux
i need a benchmark to assist in complainting to my hosting company
emerge eix && eix benchmark
its still a liveCD, since you booted into it, i installed gentoo from a Ubuntu LiveCD
ohh icic
Think there is a step in between the two, but you will figure it out since eix is user friendly
if you have a P4 on or near 3Ghz, please download http://links.sourceforge.net/download/links-0.98.tar.gz .. run ./configure then 'time make' on this package: .. and tell me the time
i lack CD-Rs
ahaha I totally understand. I started the year off with 30 and I'm down to something like 2 or 3
No, LiveCD is a CD you get a full working system with you can browse and do openoffice and whatever
It gives you a *live* system without needing to install
does the computer always turn on with the same volume set?
It's an extreamly strong feature. Boot cd's/install cd's is old hat stuff.
or does it save the volume?
Depends
err so what should I be doing? save the .config, then?
i guess i'm asking if alsa saves it's volume state
what does it depend on?
and can I set it anywhere?
The alsa I've installed saves settings on propper shutdown and restores on startup
well, since the minimal install CD is still a working system, it just has no X, IMO its a liveCD
it saves it, check your /etc/conf.d/alsa
woops, wrong filename
/etc/conf.d/alsasound
make sure RESTORE_ON_START="yes" and SAVE_ON_STOP="yes"
I have no /etc/conf.d
no conf.d that is
Isn't it a bit pointless to polute and confuse the LiveCD concept when everyone else has decided it works differently from you? What are you gaining by inventing your own definition?
….?
i can't locate an alsasound folder either
im not,
i didnt make myself clear on the other sentence, i meant that i thought that a CD that you just booted in and it gave you a system (so therefore, windows recovery diskettes too) is a liveCD, i never knew there was such a concept
You can make a Windows LiveCD actually, but it's a lot harder and less well working that the Linux ones.
what do you mean you have no /etc/conf.d/ ??…
yea, theres BartPE, but it sucks
no conf.d means many of the scripts and apps in your system have no configuration…
i'm on debian too, but i'm about to switch to gentoo
Gentoo LiveCD, Gentoo Universial CD, Gentoo Minimal
ahh alright, I've copied over the config file. what do I do now?
if youre on debian, then i dont know.
I am having a tough time getting fonts half way decent looking on this LCD here. I went through the quide on the wiki, and now they seem worse. any pointers?
on every boot I get errors about last mount times and /etc/init-conf.d files with modified dates in the future. I have touched all the init and conf files, but it still happens.
I've followed a couple tutorials to try to get suspend to ram working on my T43 but I'm not having any success. Can anyone tell me what I can do to start debugging acpi?
now your kernel settings are saved wherever you copied your .config file, now either chroot and try to fix your system or re-install everything from scratch
also, are hald and acpid mutually exclusive? When I try and start acpid it says that it can not access /proc/acpi/event, when I lsof the file hald has it…
err what's the point of chrooting? I don't understand it
just make sure that, when compiling your kernel, go to the source directory and run make oldconfig before anything, so your configs are safe
hald-addon-acpi: listening on acpid socket /var/run/acpid.socket
So no
my time and time zone appear to be correct, any ideas on the cause of these errors?
what's the point of chrooting?
To pretent root is somewhere else than it was before you changed root
maybe it was the order. I started hald after acpid, and both started fine
Miravlix:err where is root right now? I just put in the gentoo min installer CD
You can make a full Gentoo installation and mount it under /mnt/Gentoo then chroot /mnt/Gentoo and now /mnt/Gentoo is /
i dont understand the concept, but i understand what it does. By chrooting when you type a command, run a program or make a change, it applies to the system you chrooted in, and its like a CLI of the actual system, so it allows you to change stuff even if youre on a Live/Minimal CD
That way when you run any command it now use the new root setup. You effect the new system and not the read only cd
yes, what Miravlix said
err so should I be chrooting before or after I compile the kernel?
before, think of a chroot as a box inside a room, everything in the box is your new operating system sitting on your HDD
Kernel compiles prolly works without chroot as long as you understand that /mnt/Gentoo/boot = /boot
just follow the handbook
chroot is sometimes less confusing though
hes not installing, hes fixing his system, his kernel is messed up, so is his gcc and everything, so following the handbook would be useless, since it doesnt provide info on that
aaargh I'm going to go nuts, I need to get this system up asap and I'm stuck on the kernel thing. I don't want to break it even more .'
We could use a system recovery howto
you could _try_ using genkernel.
no kidding =S. Anyways, I've mounted the filesystem, and I'm in the /usr/src/linux directory
then he should probably dump the stage 3 back on and emerge -e world
I used gentoo to get the customizeability =P
is that /mnt/Gentoo/usr/src/linux?
trying to use the livecd toolchain is a lot of finger twisting
err well it's not /gentoo, but it's /hda3. I made that dir myself
he needs the system up asap, emerge -e world wouldnt help, besides, he cant even boot
from the livecd
my command line reads livecd linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r8 # …
is that correct?
cd / and do chroot /path
yea, genkernel sucks IMO, kernel configuration and compiling is very easy, i see no point for genkernel
before compiling my kernel?
go check the chroot part of the howto, so the environment get setup right
yes, go check it, just make sure to change the dirs so they fit your environment
Well, aidanjt, said the toolchain on the livecd is problematic, so your better of chrooting
That way you get your real systems toolchain
hosting company acknowledged a 'hardware problem'
alright… the kernel's compiling now
I hope it solves those kernel panics and seg faults =/
IMO you should go to another tty and start to recompile gcc
my cat decided my arms is a good place to sleep so typing is a bit challenged
since you said your gcc is broken
I'm not 100% sure if it was the gcc
I know that it wouldn't compile the kernel originally though
err… should a kernel compile take like 40 seconds?
lol.. it did, didnt it?
it took your precompiled kernel and just recompiled the changes
oh i see… that's good. I remeber the first time taking 30 mins
and since there was no changes, it was fast, i forgot th command so the kernel is built from scratch
thats not good, your kernel is the same
make clean && make && make modules modules_install
you need to re-build it from scratch
wrong, its make modules_install
not make modules modules_install
ahh damnit… alright make clean here I come =/
by the way… should my /boot directory be empty?
he just forgot an && make
cause I remember putting my kernel in there last time =S
you still need to make the modules, make modules modules_install does the moduling building and installing in one go, it's in the handbook
I often do make modules && make modules_install
its make clean && make && make modules && make modules_install?
you can do multiple make targets
wow, never knew that, always used modules_install, ill modify my kernel compiler script then
thanks for the info
Hmm, they didn't make modules_install do the compilation now?
np
probably, since i dont use make modules, and my ALSA that was compiled as modules, is working
the modules_install target only installs the modules to /lib/modules
if i have 2gb of ram should i still use 2x or for the swap size?
But some of us has been compiling linux for 14 years
old habbits die slowly
lol I doubt you'd need a swap at all =P
i have 512MB of ram and the most swap i get used is 120MB when my RAM && CPU load is VERY high
Is it possible to map 2 keyboards differently in X? I have a laptop and a USB numpad, but it's not mapping the numpad to KP_*
my /boot directory is empty… what happened?
This isn't Windows. :p 512 MB should be fine or so
You didn't mount it
as root: mount /boot
you need to mount it
ahh =/ It won't affect the kernel compile will it?
He is on a boot cd. :p
no
but you cant copy it
The installation will go badly unless you mount it before copying over
thats what i was thinking…
first do a mount /dev/(something) /boot
but seriously, shoule i at least use 1.5
argh it's already compiling
modules goes to /lib/modules so doesn't need boot
should I ctrl+c it?
where something is your hd
yeah, you only need /boot when you copy your kernel image over
you cant COPY the kernel , but you can continue compilation
ahh ok good
Naah it's fine with make you have to do cp vmlinux /boot
vmlinux? err isn't it bzImage?
with 2gb of ram, why would you need swap at all?
but like all you, i compile everything, while playing games and watching videos…:-)
yeah, bzImage now
ahh ok
I should really update to a newer kernel some time
I'm still using .16.20
so do I, on 1gb and my swap only gets touched when I have a zillion tabs open in opera or something forkbombs
no rush lol
I have a vmlinux in my /usr/src/linux directory
21 has a battery saving feature I hear =D
I'm pretty sure it's a kernel. :p
I have one too =S
i have one too, but i thought it was bzImage =X
can anyone explain why I would get the warning /etc/init.d or conf.d or fc.conf has a modification date in the future? I touched every file in /etc, rebooted, and still got the warnings
It is, but thats in another directory.
I forgot where it puts bzImage
it's bzImage in the src directory, but you'r supposed to name it vmlinuz
what? :p
in arch
I have a vmlinux in my /usr/src/linux directory
who knows, maybe all thoes games and videos in memory..
arch/something, lemme check
./ /usr/src/linux/vmlinux: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped
this is my copy command cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.6.22-gentoo-r1
is there a tool for monitoring swap usage
Baah, file sucks, it doesn't know it's a kernel
top?
emerge htop, it pwnz top
what's htop?
an improvement on 'top'
htop is a fancy top
jsin2e check your cloce
clock
what kind of improvement?
maybe vmlinux is just an uncompressed kernel? *shrugs*
make sure your not a day behind
or someting
htop, but better, you can monitor, scroll, show CPU/RAM/SWAP usage, sort proccesses and kill them
it's more user friendly
It's one of my few modernizations, I actually use gnome task manager instead of top.
my current time is correck blackbsd
also, doesn't it not matter what your kernel is called? I thought you just link to it in grub anyways
indeed
oh i see…
../boot/grub/menu.lst
Is the config file to tell grub the name of the kernel
the only thing I can think of is something is funky with ntp, maybe the time is off for a moment while booting?
I use /boot/grub/grub.conf :p
Either one works since one is a symlink to the other
have you tried modifying the file without just touching it
yes I know, but did you? :p
hm, awesome, i cant play AVI files…
that _is_ awesome, gj
hm, how do i play AVI files?
I use mplayer for that
both my mplayer and my realplayer refuse to open them
You buy a license for vmware and a license for Windows and run vmware with Windows in it.
no need, i can reboot for that
what use flags does your mplayer have? what errors does it give you?
well look at the file in question, verify your time is right, touch the file and then look at its access time again verify it changed.
Reboot?
dual boot
My last reboot was 193 days ago. :p
wait a second, i just got the error, ill put it into the pastebin
Dont even know if I can boot at the moment
my last reboot was the last time i got a kernel update (one week ago or so)
you got an old kernel huh?
3 UTC 2007 i686
Naah, my hosting provider rebooted my machine for no reason and without warning.
ouch
3 days ago it was old
I am having a wierd X resolution issue, when I startx for the first time since booting I get 1024×768, as i set in xorg.conf, but when I quit X and startx again, it's always 640×480
http://rafb.net/p/fYPxfg38.html, BTW the video doesnt play, but i hear the sound
6
pick a vo that works
Thats my Gentoo machine though, the first one is Ubuntu
yea, ill poke around mplayer's configuration
my uptimes are limited only by power outages
old.
Linux 2.6.22-gentoo-r1
It has ivtv build in, can't run it
I have vo=xv,gl2,x11\nfixed-vo=true\nzoom=true\nfs=true\nvf=scale in my ~/.mplayer/config
At least it's stable. 2.6.22 is a right headache on all of my machines.
Mythtv hasn't been ported to ivtv-1.0.0
and it isn't in gentoo yet
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
kernel panic free =D
but the free panics are the best ones
thank you everyone!
nice
my computer is VERY stable, i do emerge –sync once two days and i got ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=" ~x86" in my make.conf, i couldnt have a more stable system, no crashes nor anything, just a few KDE crashes, due to certain hardware limitation (dont buy SiS stuff)
