I have a mobile dual Core CPU and I can set speeds of it separately thus for all concerns I often have two separate

/home/test:/bin/bash
501 is the group test

then group test is your primary group

that is that I said. The primary group is the same as the username
by default
so why in the useradd default it says group=100 ie. users
?

well ^^
how did you add your user?

useradd test

is that the exact command you used?

yes
even if I 'adduser test' still the same

paste your /etc/default/useradd to a pastebin

it says group=100 believe me

then your useradd is broken.

weird, it's a brand new installation
ok, I'll google some more
thanks
kasc, when you useradd it add the default as well ?

yep, my useradd works

ok

this might be a distribution specific problem.
what distribution are you using?

centos5

did you already ask in a centos specific chan?

I am now
hehe that will be odd if it's a distro thing, come on, linux is linux..

never really has been
some distributors tend to do some really heavy patching

do you guys know if there are any patches for tcpdump to support multiple simultaneous interfaces ?

nope

kasc, sucks

you can use "-i any"

sekhmet, i want to look at all of the interfaces at once
sekhmet, not a random interface

I definitely prefer wireshark myself

Mathman, does wireshark support multiple interface at once snooping ?

I'm thinking

wireshark uses tcpdump in the background to do the capture
what do you mean, "random interface?"

ok.

sekhmet, well "any" sounds like "pick the first interface"
sekhmet, does it really mean "snoop on all interfaces" ?

Or, more specifically, they both use libpcap to do the work, which is what gives them their capabilities
the latter. "man tcpdump"

sekhmet, sweet, thanks
i checked the man page and grepped for "interface"
couldn't find anytying interesting

ha, I was just gonna say.

hey all. anyone here familiar with using PAM to control ssh logins?
trying to figure out how to make pam require passwords and rsa keys

SSH does that on its own…

wrong. SSH allows one or the other, not both required.
I want both of them to be required, not selective requisites.

it doesn't have a facility for multiple authentication mechanisms, I think

even with pam?

I'll check the docs
ok, the public key auth is actually pam-backed (at least according to Sun SSH, which should be mostly the same a OpenSSH)
so you can add other stuff to the stack that way

ahh
so it *requires* the pubkey if present when using pam
and selectively targets for passwd

I think the sshd itself actually tries different pam services until one succeeds
so the logic of asking for an additional password should be added to one of the services

how do you ask for an additional password i wonder
rather, which service do you require to ask for an additional password

in ubuntu, i have sun-java5-bin, sun-java5-jdk, etc. installed, but when i ask "java -version", it tells me it's "1.4.2", i don't get it

can openvpn make bridges from/to virtual interfaces?

anyone have any guesses as to why the up arrow would merely spit out "[A" and not scroll through the command history in matlab? it works fine with bash. and it works fine in matlab on a different machine

hm. readline bindings
^[[A is the Up Arrow in VT100 talk… that, or ^[OA
(which is an older version)

how do i make "cron" execute right now

it executes on one minute boundaries as it is.
(if it's running)

my guess is it's not running
but i entered requests to erase /var dirs in Yast interface to cron. That was last night, today nothing done yet. But i need that stuff done ASAP.

so any ideas on a fix?

hm. you could clean them manually… or edit your crontab and set it up properly.
hm. you could clean them manually… or edit your crontab and set it up properly.

what's improper about Yast?

it's too slow?

i dled a flash plugin and i dont know where it went!

I can't tell if ubuntu studio is a dvd image host or a cd image, anyone know?

they say dvd images on my end

cool thanks

heh, here I am googling for you. but that's cool
I'm bored I guess

is there a way to force a task to run on a specific CPU?

yeah, one sec…
well, I should first mention that there's probably no reason for you to do that, but one sec
taskset
I dunno if that will exactly force it to run on a cpu, but it will help
but like I say, why?
there's no reason to that I can think of
the schedular is smarter than you is what I figure
scheduler rather

ok coolnesses, what is the best place to post my video?

a website?

youtube only lets me have 320 x 240, that is too small

I have a mobile dual Core CPU and I can set speeds of it separately thus for all concerns, I often have two separate speed CPUs. I thought I'd be better running HD movies on the speedier core. The scheduler will figure this out?

I'd imagine

sure.

was that sarcastic?

no

ha, just checking

that's only me with my little English knowledlge agreeing
I only have an overall score 8 out of 9 on the IELTS

probably better than I'd do

I'm looking for an audio streaming package that can handle wav, mp3, and flac. Any takers? I've also considered a *.pls handler in apache2 to make playlists on the fly

hi will someone be kind n help me thru a little prob as i am mega baffled

Such as?
lol
impatience ftw!

When I rebuild the freetype rpm with bci enabled, yum always insists on replacing it with the fedora original package, claiming it is more recent. Is there a way to avoid that?

Prolly a skip package in the yum config file?

AcTiVaTe, what perplexes me is that on http://avi.alkalay.net/linux/docs/font-howto/Font.html#freetype , they have precompiled packages of freetype with bci, and these are not replaced by yum
(they don't have fedora 7 pacakges yet, hence my manual recompiling)

And you use rpm -Uvh to upgrade the package?

yes

Maybe try using yum to install the recompiled package
That way it might get registered correctly
Must be a way to use yum to install a local package

ya can also look at the .spec file for the package version….

awol, what do you mean?
I'm rebuilding the package from the fedora source rpm

yeah well… maybe there's some command line switch too….
otherwise adjusting the .spec file can change the package version to make it as new or newer than the "official" package

oh, good idea

hi i want to get a disclaimer into every source file [to the top]

oh, stupid me, I had not noticed that the server host I was using to get the source rpms is one version behind for freetype, so that's why yum was insisting on updating. My bad, sorry guys

source?

it seems, not.. hmm

tapas, you could do it in two steps

yeah i guess

{}.new; mv {}.new {} \; or something

well, i have my code in svn, so what cango wrong?

where does X store the current resolution setting?
/etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Hi. I cant get my internet connection working. I am using: ifconfig eth1 up 80.108.103.172 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 80.108.103.255 but this info seems not enough. Under windows, the netcard works out of the box without doing anything

Hey people. I am trying to run the command "regenerate" in any directory that has such a file. I tried the following: find . -type f -name regenerate -printf '"%h"\n' | xargs cd %1 && ./regenerate

Hey, does anyone here know if the 8139too driver is buggy when attempting to use multiple cards with different revisions in parallel?
*has 2 8139 Revision D's and an 8139 Rev B all in the same system, and none of them seem to actually be usable, even though they'll show link up in dmesg, and such, they won't actually communicate over the link.
Nevermind, user error.

does anyone use chinese input in X?

Probably the chinese.

That's a meta-question.

it's a simple question
i'm looking through the keyboard layouts in ubuntu and it seriously have every language BUT chinese
all the other asian languages
what gives

maybe it shows chinese only if you install it, and chinese was in a separate package because the fonts were huge?

apt-cache search fonts|grep chinese
might help
xfonts-intl-chinese and xfonts-intl-chinese-big look good
argh
left already
