Hi I am trying to compile a vmware tools package in debian 4 — but it keeps saying that it cant find the linux-versionh
Force-LoopBreak option.
Reverse conflicts early remove for package 'tzdata' failed
too bad
fdisk -l /dev/hdX
the next step would be to put a filesystem on the new partition
hey there was a comman with " dpkg-[something] /usr/sbin/[application]" that told me about the package name that installed [application, does someone remember ?
I am trying to install nvidia-glx package. It fails with following error: http://pastebin.ca/661287 . nvidia-glx-legacy doesn't exist (I purged it). I also removed stalling files from /var/lib/dpkg/info/ and modified /var/lib/dpkg/status and also removed synlinks form /usr/lib/libGL* but with no avail. Any tips?
be less vague
ok my install is seriously fucked up
???
it is saying init doesn't exsist
what does vague mean
dpkg -S /usr/sbin/foo, probably
azeem i think it was -S thank you
ehm
is it possible to downgrade a debian installation?
like go back to etch ?
in general, no
gah
I was thinking of going from unstable back to etch
haha
sorry
I havent installed much other than dist-upgrade
its a testsetup so no worries
hmm
if you've only upgraded a handful of packages, and know exactly what they are, and there were no incompatible changes in configuration or data format, you might be able to wing it
ill try changing sources.list and lets see what happends
if you're done a dist-upgrade, forget it
well mr pesimistic
+s
HEY!
whats wrong with apt?
i cant configure it
it just fails
try to be more precise
what command do you run?
no, you seem not to have adequate knowledge to do it, and just editing sources.list won't accomplish much
im installin debian now
and I'm not a Mrs.
well thats the idea of testsetups to gain adequate knowledge
and it just fails when i choose ftp.fi.debian.org or ftp.funet.fi
and both of them are up
and eth0 is also up and doing well
if you are no Mr and no Mrs, are you a Ms then ?
so what port apt is using? 21 or 80?
hit alt+f3 and try to ping something - does that work?
probably 80
azeem i dont have packets, netinst
debian:~# apt-get dist-downgrade
Invalid operation dist-downgrade
do you need to set an http proxy?
you'd have to get a list of installed packages and force installation of the versions from etch.
azeem no?
dpkg -l ?
no
are there no commit log stored in debian ?
like rollback capabilities
no
nope.
would be nifty
yes.
as we said, downgrades are not supported
"apt-get downgrade to 2007-08-01" and poff
poof being what would happen too
use a virtual machine with snapshot capabilities.
azeem "Scanning mirrors…" 40%
soon it fails
no matter wich one i choose
a debian system does not work as simple as that to allow this
A such restore way like MS have, i guess. Yeah, will be very handy but could take much space i guess :-s
"Exploiting mirrors… changing md5sum 42%"
it will fail always, and i have 80 and 21 open
is there something more informative on the second console(alt+f2)?
space is all I got baby
azeem what there should be?
see whether wget is available
there is nothing
But i dunno how that could be fix the libs and the c probs
/dev/md1 455G 601M
eh, nothing?
because im installing it
netinstall
it's also impossible to do in general case. What if postgres is upgraded from 7.4 to 8.1 and updates all the data to a new and incompatible format.
that doesn't mean there is "nothing", ok?
very minimal system without apt configuration
not only space, but it would degrade FS performance heavily
well… yea there is but nothing useful
what i can use in this situation
there should be ping at least AFAIK
ehm actually why would it ?
Yeah, sure. Idem for all these other 'new' file/config format the new apps may use
can you ping the box?
if you have a second machine
put the slower parts of the harddrive for shadows
"Bad archive mirror, The specified debian archive mirror is either not available, or does not have a valid release file on it. Please try a different mirror"
just saying, even if you had an effective snapshot of /, /usr and /etc, it still might not be enough
thats the error
Yeah 12G for the 'running' system and 120G for all these roll-backs :-p
hi, where do i can find infos on different kernels ie what a 2.2 kernel 'a 2.4 and 2.6 pros e cons ?
You know what you may try to build now
you just go for 2.6
IF you have free time, code some nice feature
well I have 500GB here so
valdyn?
But there still leave some technical problems. Space these days is not a big issue
which CPU?
q6600
works good with debian etch amd64
used netinst
you dont really have a choice, 2.6 is nearly your only choice, using something else is highly inconvenient ( exceptions exist )
if you really need rollbacks, use Xen or some other virtual machine which has replication and/or snapshots
na was just curious since im testing this hardware before I will set it to production
then try another mirror still, if there is no better error on alt+f2
so i started with software raid and etch, worked like a charm
took roughly 2-3 hours to sync the disks (raid1 500gb)
2.2 is not even maintained properly anymore, entirely out of the question for a new to setup system
how could i compile host amsn using the websites source code without it messing up my debian install?
but then I went ballistic and tried testing and after that unstable
azeem that doesnt matter wich one i try to use
eh, just reinstall, then
yeah I will
maybe you have a http proxy cache which corrupts stuff
but that will take like 2-3 hours
Heh, use unstable in chroot or in virtual computers
34359738367 kB
maybe you can come up with more specific requirements, then i or anyone can come up with more specific information
why dont you just do daily backups?
azeem i dont have
I suggest you get a full ISO then, and debug APT after you got base etc. installed
rsnapshot for example …
?
again its a freshly built box which Im just experimenting (playing) with now
sure, but you asked for rollback capabilities
that's easy to implement, you just need to do the backups..
I'm using etch, I need a good ftp client. ncftp crashes some transfers, gftp had this annoying modal window .. which one should I use? ftp has been around for so long, there must be one client that "just works"..
lftp
!ftpmustdie
FTP MUST DIE! http://wooledge.org/mywiki/FtpMustDie
ncftp is fine, the ftp protocol is teh mess
ftp *must* die.
'ftp'?
Read that page, serious
shall do..
is etch 4.0r1 newer than just etch4.0?
Any hints on how to install compiz-fusion? howtos and buildscripts that i find on the net only fail :/
just security upgrades.
an updated etch install is 4.0r1
Hi. I need to install the old NVidia's driver version 5336, which is not on Etch's repository (the oldest there is 73xx). Is there a repository for older drivers?
Use the Shame Debian Repository
deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/shames/debian-sid/desktopfx/unstable/ ./
No such device eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
yeah strange error message, I'm wondering what it means
thanks!
I have checked that if my networking driver loaded or not, Ihave realteck and all drivers are loaded
well, if you have only one card, it would probably be assigned the name "eth0", not "eth1"
check via ifconfig -a
I have two card
both I get this error message
check "ifconfig -a" anyways … does it list eth0 and eth1?
put your interfaces file on a pastebin
!pastebin
Please don't paste anything into the channel; use a paste site instead, like: http://paste.lisp.org or http://rafb.net/paste/ or http://pastebin.ca/ or http://picpaste.com for pics. — Also ask me: pastebin pipe
no its showing me eth6 to eth9
well, then it's obvious … edit /etc/network/interfaces to use the correct interface names
if you compile something in debian, where is a good place to store the files?
/opt or /usr/local ?
Does anyone know how I can get this webcam working? http://paste.debian.net/34866
here is my interface file http://pastebin.ca/661367
I am trying to install nvidia-glx package. It fails with following error: http://pastebin.ca/661287 . nvidia-glx-legacy doesn't exist (I purged it). I also removed stalling files from /var/lib/dpkg/info/ and modified /var/lib/dpkg/status and also removed symlinks form /usr/lib/libGL* but with no avail. Any tips?
/usr/local usually, opt should be strictly one subdir per package or provider (no /opt/bin etc)
Can anyone help me get tftp-hpa working? When I try tftp localhost and try to get a file, it times out
Or, make a .deb
ok. just change the interfaces file accordingly (eth6 and eth9)
what about vidia-glx-legacy-96xx ?
that's not the same as nvidia-glx-legacy
did anyone else notice that there is no drbd module in the etch kernel update we recently had?
nvidia, not vidia
\amethyst, let me check
is drbd in kernel at all?
yeah. thats how I installed it. the kernel module is in it's own package.
hi, is there any way to repiar deiban instalation in which someone has deleted apt and dpkg directories from /var?
thanx now its working
so, you can use m-a to build it again in case the previously installed version does not work any more
probably not, but..
I guess I'm going to have to
\amethyst, no. it didn't work. let me try a different approach. I will install the legacy drivers along with the legacy module. maybe it'll work.
it being in its own packages actually means it does not come with the kernel, but as a separate source
know what? I may be smoking crack. I might have used m-a to build the module.
possible. I don't see anything like drbd0.7-module-2.6.18-4-686 in apt-cache search
I was thinking uninstall the nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx, but that works too
Can anyone help me get tftp-hpa working? When I try tftp localhost and try to get a file, it times out
is tftp entry in /etc/inetd.conf enabled?
It's not commented, but I don't really know
uncommented = enabled here. is inetd running?
http://paste.debian.net/34867
Yeah, it is
maybe an alternative would be atftp/atftpd
Okay, I don't care what app it is, so long that it works for the few minutes I need it
atftp works like a breeze here
Ok, great
new problem now networking is up but I cant ping to any machine
I just need it to hack my Fonera router and install dd-wrt
I also have atftpd … even though I don't remember what did I ever use it for
http://paste.debian.net/34868
Great, dpkg error
i need it for my managed switch
well, this machine had been a dhcp server a while ago, but nothing ever booted from it
So how do I solve this error?
comment out that invoke-rc.d … stop line in /var/lib/dpkg/info/tftpd-hpa.prerm, try again
running etch, compliling the 2.6.22 kernel. debian enables SYSFS_DEPRECATED by default. kernel.org says any distro newer than 2006, say no. do i need it or not?
not set on my custom 2.6.22 build
do you even need to recompile the kernel?
there is no 2.6.22 in etcg
Is there a clone of Windows solitaire for Debian?
Didn't seem to help
so backport
…. and THAT involves compiling.
yes, it comes with wine.
not necessaril.
apt-cache search solitaire ?
it certainly doesn't involve making menuconfig.
Hi, I am trying to compile a vmware tools package in debian 4 — but it keeps saying that it cant find the linux/version.h…. I have extracted the linux-sources and installed the headers for the runing kernel — what else can I do??
everything I tried has slightly different rules
Never mind, I figured it out
(this is obviously not for myself)
however, there are BETTER implementations that AREN'T clones of Windows' sol.exe, such as pysol.
jelly, well, if it's OK for you, it's OK for me … thanks.
\amethyst, it installed correctly, now let me check it
anyone… vmware… Bueler…
you don't need linux-sources, only linux-headers-`uname -r` installed
i haven't had any problem with setting that to "n" either
jelly — really?
YARLY
how come it does not work then?
When the the vmware-package package appear? Lenny?
*first appear
Ok, how do I use atftpd?
I have that installed..
with great difficulty.
can you pastebin the command you're running and complete output?
are you trying to netboot?
?
it works, yay!
usually, while installing the package, debconf asks you how you want it to be configured
!paster
if you want to use another site.
It didn't
I did dpkg-reconfigure on it
try dpkg-reconfigure -plow atftpd
in any case, if the user wants her own kernel, she can get rid of all the unnecessary crap that Debian's .config enables
IME it's usually not worth the hassle.
makes a difference between waiting only 5-10 minutes, and half an hour to build
only 5-10 minutes where?
What is the default tftp port?
grep tftp /etc/services
I installed pysol. I don't see how it is better as the cards are not resized when the screen is resized.
What does -plow do?
just say tftp, you don't need to use a number
Windows sol.exe doesn't do that.
Athlon X2 4200+, make -j2
what's up? spamassassin isn't running any tests: X-Spam-Status: No, score=0 tagged_above=-999 required=4 tests=[none]
getent services tftp
sets to show also the lowest priority questions
ok, then in sol.exe they are larger by default
you mean the compile time? But if you're not compiling the kernel, it takes 0 time.
Ok
gnome-games, IIRC, has a program "sol" that provides vector images for the cards, and they are resized on WINCH
you can try "dpkg-reconfigure -plow debconf" to set debconf up to always show all questions
