Im trying to create a new full virtu Xen XP-Pro system I tell it to use a simple file -path-xp_proimg and then

downhillgames, that is quite old now
downhillgames, we didn't release the list for that one; kanarip did code a nice script that lists the changes between core and re-spin

um… 2 months?
3 months

downhillgames, ummm… it's 20070806

Rathann, I'd try logging out and back. If it still doesn't work… well, something else is grabbing your keys I guess

daMaestro; i'm still running FC6, fully updated. would that have anything newer?

no, that is 4 months old

daMaestro; my birthday is the 9th i'm aware of the date

Rathann, oh and try using the scim panel applet

ah, ok. well the newer versions pretty much ended for FC6.. firefox, etc. i was curious what the differences were
thanks, daMaestro ^_^

how easy is it to setup chroot and sftp on fedora ?

for configuration? I already did… there's no other way to configure scim (well, except editing the config files)

like jailing remote users via ssh
is it all bots here

I have used rssh in the past to do that…

ok

is gnash worth taking a look at? Youtube supported?

is there some docs about jailing ssh users?

http://www.pizzashack.org/rssh/

thx 4 the link

hm
yumdownloader seems broken

is there a good alternative to networkmanager
or a howto for doing network stuff manualß

b52
what is wrong with networkmanager ?
you can always use system-config-network
for configuring your network cards

he only connects sometimes to my wlan

Hi! I'm trying to debug a problem with hal for a bug report - is there any way I can turn on additional logging?

b52`-: I use a package called wifiroamd… it's non gui, written in python. Might be worth trying for you.

looks like I got it to work

Hi, I have a permission problem trying to get Evolution to access my emails from postfix. Anyone know a way to make this work… its really making me frustrated now

Rathann, nice

what are you trying to do? what is the exact error you get? please pastebin it and provide the link…

does anyone know if the build of Evolution that ships with F7 includes LDAP support? All the resources I find on Google give instructions for Evolution that I am unable to follow, because the settings entries do not exist in my installed instance.

i set up evolution to pick up mails from home/usera/maildir - it returns a permission denied error. I have checked the permissions and it is as open as it can be, read/write/change etc

looks like some packages from fc6 were untouched by the upgrade (because they had newer versions)

ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
whats up to this?

nirik, if i try to run it from the default var/spool/mail i just get a greyed out list

nirik, where can i get it?

Nirik it looks like a permissions issue but I am not sure if the permissions are for the application or the mail recipient

or can u tell me where i can search for such dl links?

do you have a fedora machine on the net you can download with?

no

ok, let me find you a url

Stupid question.. I want to resize a partition and create a new one in gparted, but it's not letting me
So now what?

try: http://mirrors.tummy.com/pub/fedora.redhat.com/fedora/linux/releases/7/Everything/i386/os/Fedora/wifiroamd-1.11-1.fc6.noarch.rpm it also needs
fping… available in that same dir.

fc6?
dont i need fc7?

Is the partition mounted?

that is the fc7 version… it didn't need a rebuild since fc6, so it still has the fc6 tag in it.

ah ok
can i install such downloaded packages only with rpm or also with yum?

yes with yum localinstall

is this better then with rpm=

yum uses rom
rpm

oh :P
nirik, if i use wifiroamd, can i purge networkmanager`?

sure, but you might keep it until you are sure you like wifiroamd.

ok
i installed fping and wifiroamd
i had to use rpm because yum created errors
anyway it tried to fetch some urls oO

jbannon, tried that and whilst the permissions problem went away, i still cannt see any mails. Gonna call it a night i think and see if it looks any better in the morning - Thanks for the help guys

nirik, is there a howto for using wifiroamd?

not really. It's all written in python, so you can look at code… there is a README file and a man page. It's pretty simple.

JBannon / Nirik, just restarted postfix daemon and bingo…..its working, Thanks for the assists guys :-)

Why do I keep having to import keys for yum?

cause you keep changing repos

you need gpg keys for each repo you have enabled

So I need to go to their website and check their keys?

if you have lots of repos enabled you'll end up with a screwed system in no time
no, you just need to import a specific repos gpg key once

opsec its just one and zeros

yea, i know ..

reinstalls are easy

more repos is better right?
even if lots of stuff conflicts

not what i am saying

conflicts aren't bad .. it just means your system needs counseling

perlmonkey3, yum clean all

Hey all - looking for a hardware compatibility list for USB webcams - can anyone provide a pointer?
uHey all - looking for a hardware compatibility list for USB webcams - can anyone provide a pointer?/u

No such file or directory //var/cache/yum/livna/headers

perlmonkey3, reboot

But today I've had to import a key once before and once after installing linva.
okay

can anyome suggest a usb webcam that works well under linux? (planning to use it with ekiga)

what means a /24 in the end of an ip ?

24 bits in the submet mask

that it has a /24 subnet mask… ie, it describes a network

is this 255
is this 255.255.255.0 the subnet mask?

yeah

yes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subnetwork

ok, little question to wifiroamd, where specify i the device of my wlan interface?

it autodetects it… unless it's something non standard.

is there a log what wifiroamd isdoing?

it should log to /var/log/messages.

hmm there is no message

hey guys i am new to fedora 7, does resolving dependencies take long time

is it running?

prudvi, no

prudvi, not on my end lol

seems like
python /sbin/wifiroamd

its shoed 227 packaged to update and then when i clicked ok its showing dependencies window for 10 mints till now and some internet tranfer is taking place

prudvi, what I would do is shut that down, open a term and type su - then I would type in yum update

ok
thank u will do that

I find it goes much quicker

I'm following http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/limewire/?searchterm=limewire to install LimeWire on Fedora but on the link it gives to get the LimeWire Source, there is no longer a .rpm
availiable.
Just a .deb

another copy is running as pid 3689.
this is wat i get

How can I install .deb packages?

wahhhhhhhhh im gettin crazy
why is it so hard to bring up a wifi conntion with fedora?

i never had problems

Me neither.

vader1102i get the above mentioned error

are you sure your wireless device is working? what model is it?

another copy is running as pid 3689.

sphairon thunderbird ub801r
with networkmanger it runned sometimes

Existing lock /var/run/yum.pid: another copy is running as pid 3689. Aborting.
any solution for this

vader1102, that is yours to answer
vader1102, as you made him do the console thing

I know lol

I'm following http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/limewire/?searchterm=limewire to install LimeWire on Fedora but on the link it gives to get the LimeWire Source, there is no longer a .rpm
availiable.

prudvi, is there a little box in the upper right hand corner?

i closed it
quit

which, btw, doesn't really does things quicker, rather then just update more often

Or is there something better for linux than LimeWire?

s/does/do/

frostwire

well, if the device was working wifiroamd would use it… what does a 'iwconfig wlan0' give? how about 'iwlist wlan0 scan' (replace wlan0 with your interface name)

Steffan, hold on, i'll look into that

prudvi, what happens now??

Ok

same error

tw2113, what's frostwire? another application?

i believe the OSS version of limewire

iwlist wlan0 scan give no scan results

If there is a better program for fedora as an alternate to LimeWire then great.

ok prudvi do you have anything else running that requires root access?

Where is this?

www.frostwire.com

Steffan, i don't have a slightest clue, but i do know i want fedorasolved to be up to date and working

how to find that i dont have anyh running to my naked eyes

hmm… tell me the story about how the 2nd stage install image is broken in the latest development build
I am trying to get it to run in VMWare
Microsoft Virtual PC, rather

you'll need some java stuff installed to get it working though
i got it working on ubuntu but not fedora, although i'm a bit lazy too

prudvi, try going ApplicationsSystem toolsSoftware updater. maybe it was just being slow to find the dependancies

Ok thank's for help anyway

ok

#ubuntu just told me about that - I'll take a look :o )

Steffan, right i didn't find any rpms either

dpkg comes with fedora as default, or is a seperate install package?

I'm trying to create a new full virtu Xen XP-Pro system. I tell it to use a simple file /path/xp_pro.img and then I get an error saying that file doesn't exist. But I'm creating a *new* system so of course it doesn't exists. Should I touch it or something?

I think dpkg is used for installing .deb right?

yea i did it

k

how much time shud it take

leave it till it finishes

ok

fedora doesn't use debs…

if you know the precise module for the kernel driver for your wireless card, and it worked with networkmanager (at least sometimes) try adding 'alias wlan0 yourdrivermodule' to /etc/modprobe.conf

perhaps take a look at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Fedora7VirtQuickStart

we rock the rpm

I'll try vmware workstation

Thought so - Got frostwire.rpm now anyhow :o ) Look's good.

I suffered through lock-ups and reboots for a few days to check out compiz+fusion and then decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Now I've realized how much I liked it and how well it helped me organize my desktop and I want to get it working…. If someone could help me identify the cause of
the lock-ups and resolve them, i would be ever so greatful. more……

I'm running Fedora 7 with nvidia drivers. My card is a 7800GTX. I've followed the setup guide at http://compiz.org/NVidia as well as I could. From what I've heard, I wonder if it's the nvidia drivers but I've heard that the older ones don't have a needed
OpenGL flag/feature, and the newer ones are prone to the lockups.
Help ?

oddly, at the same time, the sound 'bobbled' — the slider on the menu refused to work too — although after a couple of reboots diagnosing the wireless, it corrected itself somehow

Heh, thanks, but that doesn't help much. It basically says "Use the virt-manage wizard.

hi i hot a problem

yeah? and is that bad? or is there a reason you want not to?

rpm -ivh http://www.illawarra.org/linux/sam-repo-5-2.fc5.noarch.rpm

What is better fedora or centos?

the compiz that comes with Fedora under Desktop Effects can be tweaked manually with gconf-editor although it's not as nice as a full blown control panel
relative question — do you want stability or 'the latest bleeding edge stuff' ?

i just instaled fedora and i realise that i cant run exe files for windows pls someoane tell me why?

I'm using the virt-manager. It keeps choking on the file doesn't exist, when its help file says it will just create teh new file.

to remove that 'rpm -e sam-repo'

I was just curious to what you thought

k thanks nirik, once again

neither. It all depends on what you want.

because linux isn't windows ? and executables need to be compiled for the operating system they run on ?

nirik? can you help me?

I actually use ubuntu but I use centos for server

You're saying that a Compiz package exists for F7 from Fedora?

I was wondering if fedora makes a good server too

came with it. installed from the dvd. enable Desktop Effects in the menus under preferences
Look and Feel, I think it was, rainabba

sure, but you have to be able to follow a quick upgrade cycle.

ok so i cantplay games like san andreeas and counter???

We use Fedora for servers and it works wonderful. We put it under pretty serious loads for extended periods without issue.

short answer nope, longer answer is complicated

depends. it's 'less stable' because of its nature but generally it will work terifically — but you're expected to presume it's "testing" and file bug reports for it
to play windows games under linux, you might look at Cedega from Transgaming .. (formerly winex)

Where do pastes go?

I've ran Diablo II and Unreal '99 under linux just fine

I've had errors installing FrostWire

rafb.net/paste, Steffan

slexy.org

can't wait for ut2007

esti roman?

wine works well for lots of games, worth using that first

Don't laugh too hard, but what "preferences" menu are you refering to? I'm using KDE if that matters.

there's some needed java hosting to get it working on fedora

why not just dual boot?

holy sweet god of the monkeys, Beryl is incredible on with a real gfx card. This is beautiful.

i am in resolving dependencies step is there any user interference required to compltete the update

nvidia?

with gnome there was an option to edit the menus and enable some look-and-feel prefs that don't show up by default — then you get the "desktop Effects" item

i asked bcse it already 3am here

http://rafb.net/p/yKqgkp31.html

unfortunely no, ATI

had a few errors in frostwire

anyone help me with eclipse, I am running F7 and eclipse seems unstable i.e. it crashes quite a lot

heh, now see how much it ACTUALLY help productivity and really be wowed.

i haven't been able to resolve it myself

prudvi, naw

But I had only seen it before on my 5 year old onboard intel, so it was SLOW. Now, this is incredible.

the same error tw2113?

oh so its under xgl, just wanted to ask if you used nvidia + xgl, most people don't but nvidia+xgl is faster than just plain x and beryl

yeah

check rpm -q compiz — if it's not installed, you can install it via yum without adding anything funky

i don't have some form of java on my machine for it

they make something that doesn't work, interesting.. tw2113

thank u and byee must have a nappp

came with fedora 7 — I didn't add it myself. installed straight off the DVD installer

it says version+ at the error, and i have a higher java than it requires

That's why I asked the first question. I had to install a custom repo because I didn't see it

i'm trying to get used to torrents for all my pirating needs
kind of sucks for some unknown music that i find though

yeah get rid of the custom repo and all that stuff

yup but lime/frost wire is easier for music.

torrents are great

you can just run 'desktop-effects' from the commandline too

Anyone else know of an alternate to LimeWire?

buy your own cd's and rip music from your personal collection

tw2113, is used to use GTK Gnutella I think it was called, don't know if it is still around
utw2113, is used to use GTK Gnutella I think it was called, don't know if it is still around/u

iTunes ?

+free.

that way if my drive goes foom, I still have all my tunes ;p

i buy cds when i know i like the artist

Thanks, that should be enough piecs.
You could go shop-lift WalMart

would be a good idea, but limewire doesn't require you to leave your computer seat.

and itunes does?

walmart doesn't sell good music

Folks like you are the ones should be on the news getting caught. Too lazy to research yourself, how to go steal music.

no, but it requires you to go into your wallet to get your credit card number.

oh so you prefer piracy to legitimacy
just as long as we're clear

if they care about it that much - they should try harder to stop limewire.
bif they care about it that much - they should try harder to stop limewire./b
can't be that bothered by it

Based on how lazy he appears here, I'm guessing he's jobless and broke so he'd have to steal.
Based on how lazy he appears here, I'm guessing he's jobless and broke so he'd have to steal.

Hardly.

I just built it up over a longer period of time than instantaneously ;P

Than you're just a prick. Go hit up a Warez channel on efnet.
Than you're just a prick. Go hit up a Warez channel on efnet.

and you provide installation support for limewire on your how-to website.

but it so cedega6.0 is a program what i can install and play windows games??

funny.

is limewire ONLY used to steal music ?
if so, then it should be removed from the how-to, I agree.

No, it's also used to show the authorities what a crap job theyre doing of closing down illegal software sites.

Q.E.D.

Thank god for /ignore

anyway…
did you go to the website for Cedega ?

yep

everyone remember this is #fedora, not #music-philosophy.

they even have a database showing how good their program supports each game

yes, but it costs monies, whereas wine is a great compatability layer that is worth using

YOu mean #fedora, not #ethics or #morality?

))

indeed.

IMHO the cedega branch is worth the minor cost if you're planning on playing lots of windows-centric games under linux

(and I get better fps in CS via wine than cedega, go figure)

if there's a linux compatible release of the game, then by all means go for it

ok il try to get a free pirated version im in romania so pirated software here are 100 percent:P

if you pay for it, you're entitled to support for it
if you don't then you are not. :P

)

if you want to pirate it, don't come back for more help ;'p
(in other words)

so you folks what games you like to play under fedora??

when I want to get something more serious done, I use linux or the Macintosh

I've got Compiz-fusion profiles saved. Any way to use them with this Fedora release of compiz?

ok so im not the time of serios guy i wanted something diferent so what are this serios matters?

insofar as I am aware, the compiz that ships with fedora is an earlier one — the current one is in testing although you could confirm that in #compiz, possibly

Ok need some help. I have a webserver thats old ands to be migrated. Lots of custom software. So I need to rsync if possible everything over.. what should I exclude, when I rsync? Anyone have an idea?

with that in mind, I believe the answer to your question is no

see http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Games

Ty

however it DOES work well, and can be configured manually via gconf-editor
all the additional options are there, just not exposed via the desktop-effects controlpanel

does anyone know where i can get minimal boot media? they dont see to be available on the mirrors/torrents even tho docs clearly say so. is the resque cd the same?
udoes anyone know where i can get minimal boot media? they dont see to be available on the mirrors/torrents even tho docs clearly say so. is the resque cd the same?/u
s/see/seem

look for boot.iso

didnt find any on where i looked

try a different mirror

they all have the same…

isn't the boot.iso on the install DVD ?

loooked at5

http://ftp.univie.ac.at/systems/linux/fedora/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/images/boot.iso
$MIRROR/releases/7/Fedora/arch/os/images/boot.iso

Anyone know how to make Beryl not bring to focus upon mouse-ove?

Nice. If I could impose on you once more; how do I find out the valid values for each option?

thx it works
7.7 mb?! damn small

best bet is asking in #compiz

its just a boot image

technically not small enough

(and letting them know which version you have and why you're sticking with it and waiting for the newer one to hit the main repository)

its only used for netinstalls

anyone know of a good guide for installing xgl in f7?

Ok need some help. I have a webserver thats old ands to be migrated. Lots of custom software. So I need to rsync if possible everything over.. what should I exclude, when I rsync? Anyone have an idea?

hope it will work out well

compiz comes with F7
you need xgl too ?

well i just installed the ati drivers through yum
i couldn't get the default compiz to work, btw

grate 2d games on fedora i playd so far like lineage and WoW and now i am playng mana the 2d online game for fedora hahahahaha))))))))

Will a normal XP-pro iso work with Xen? Now it is saying my iso doesn't exist

can you be more specific than 'doesn't work', linux_stu ?

yeah
i have to figure out where the option for using compiz is
i can't remember

run 'desktop-effects' from the console

ok

it doesn't show up in the gnome menus by default for some odd reason, until you enable the look-and-feel option under preferences in the gnome menus

i am using kde

Desktop Effects

and desktop-effects isn't a console command

rpm -q compiz

how to start the kde? I installed it now i don't know how to start it

package compiz is not installed

that may be why it's not working :P

lol

yum install compiz

what do you have? see?

maybe when i tried to use it i had gnome

switchdesk kde

Heh, turns out gconfeditor shows the values in the bottom pane

it should be the same for gnome/kde

ok
i prefer beryl over comiz
*compiz
actually, beryl is all i've ever used

nirik, i installed a new driver and the scan gives me 2 aps
also mine

-bash: switchdesk: command not found

"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su –login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.

beryl has merged with compiz

but i hear that after the beryl + compiz merge, the beryl codebase is going to be used
yeah

so it's all one and the same anyway, once the wash is done

ok
i am curious when that will happen

everytimei reboot and wpa_supplicant tries to start it spits out a bunch of "IOCTL????: No Such device" errors, then segfaults. What causes this?

glad to hear it.

at least *something* was in time to get compiz as part of the fedora core install
I'm sure the more recent compiz is in testing for FC, or at least in rawhide

i am running it as root

yum install switchdesk

ok, wifiroamd gave him the essid

err, did you use (su -) or (su -l) or (su –login) ? or just (su) to get to root ?

but im not sure if the rest is correct
its wep shared security

Hello. How does one play MIDIs in Fedora without a hardware mapper? Timidity (which I used on Debian) doesn't seem to exist anywhere, in core, extras, or updates-testing.

it still runs the gnome

how can i set an dedicated ip for my device?

b52`- after becoming root:

netmask netmask

i.e. /sbin/ifconfig eth0 10.1.0.2 netmask 255.0.0.0

ok i installed compiz

so this explains how can you doo it dragon http://linuxondesktop.blogspot.com/2006/07/running-windows-applications-under.html
i found it

is there a way to get a newer kernel, i.e. 2.6.22 on f7?

Ok need some help. I have a webserver thats old ands to be migrated. Lots of custom software. So I need to rsync if possible everything over.. what should I exclude, when I rsync? Anyone have an idea?

there's more than a few ways to do it, Midian_

does a package exist for GCC documentation

like sex)

including running Windows _in_ a window, via Xen/KVM

for F7

wow
i am not so smart

/dev

:P

but that requires a processor capable of VT

/tmp, /var/tmp, /var/cache, etc. unless you want that stuff.

i got a mobile centrino at 2,4 ghz

but since Xen / KVM are now part of fedora, that's not as difficult as it might have been earlier

desktop-effects: "the composite extension is not available"

you'll need to know specific details about your cpu before you know whether it's possible

or … is there a way to grab a snapshot of rawhide and run it?

my dual-core T2060 intel chip, is not one of them

my god
webdragon you look pretty smart:P

I'm faking it

lol

))

haha

i installed compiz
and i tried to do "desktop-effects

try "cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep vt" at the command line. that will tell you.

will thell me what?

I've been around computers since about 1980 or so when I got my first one (TRS-80 Model III)

but it gave me the error "the composite extension is not available"

does a package exist for GCC C++ documentation for Fedora 7

Alternatively you could just grep for "flags"
if you have VT support or not.
As WebDragon is asking.

aham

hrm, you installed it via yum ? it shoulda grabbed any deps it needed

what is the current kernel in f7?

yes yum, it installed a number of dependencies
could it have to do with my xorg configuration?

2.6.22-1.41.fc7

does a package exist for GCC C++ documentation for Fedora 7

i have an extension subsection in which i have composite set to off

where would I go to submt a desktop background?

that could be it, yes

i did that to make fglrx work

what's the kernel you get when you initially install f7? 2.6.21.blah?

i can test it though

check the "fedora weekly news" for the Fedora Art section

submt=submit

Is there a way to find out how many .rpm packages there are total…I mean…it'd have to be an estimation, for sure…

ty WebDragon

Hey, how can I get the Xvid codec working with Totem? I've got totem-xine with xine-lib(-extras-nonfree) and the all* codecs pack from mplayer site, but it only plays divx 3.2, doesn't play xvid or divx5

can anyone tell me how to run kde?

2.6.21-1.3228, odla

and gnome-look.org, kde-look.org art.gnome.org so we can use it w/o their approval

rather than having "off" next to composite in xorg.conf, what should i put?

thanks

sudo yum install kde

"on" ?

lol

alredy did that

let me check what mine says. brb

i can't remember what was there before i changed it
and i didn't back it up

err, did you use (su -) or (su -l) or (su –login) ? or just (su) to get to root ?

Hello. How does one play MIDIs in Fedora without a hardware mapper? Timidity (which I used on Debian) doesn't seem to exist anywhere, in core, extras, or updates-testing.

su -

Thank you so much. As obvious as that should have been, I completely missed it. The only thing I'm missing now is Emerald
and I can live w/o that

it installed propertly but i cannot run it

yum install switchdesk

did that too

that'll come with the later one
or something enough like it
then you should be able to 'switchdesk kde'

later one?

AWOSLappy; compile it from source or build an RPM

Next version you mean?

the one in testing or rawhide that hasn't been released for F7 yet

Ok

i did that but it didn't switch to kde

Hrm. okay.

log out and back in again

I rebooted

Hrm, I saw an article on /. this morning about lguest. Anyone have that running under Fedora, by chance?

stil gnome

it affects what session you're supposed to start with
it changed your root session, not your user session
:P

AWOSLappy; it's not in livna or freshrpms?
or rpmfind.net *cringe*

you don't need to be root to use switchdesk — it's user-specific

didn't check freshrpms or rpmfind, but it's not in livna

ah

since it's in /usr/bin/switchdesk that shoulda been obvious

so i should use switchdesk without su -

it's even in freaking ubuntu/main

you should use switchdesk as the user account not the superuser account

so I don't see why it isn't included in Fedora, unless maybe I'm misspelling it
I thought for sure it was "timidity"

AWOSLappy; this like me with PySol… the only card game suite i could ever want and there is only a .deb currently

back

ahh.

with fedora
wuhu

AWOSLappy; that's why i use yumex.. it doesn't care as long as you're close

but, nirik, not with ur wifiroamd, it doesnt work for me, no idea why :/

AWOSLappy; i mean.. as long as its' in the name or description, it'll show up in the search results

ahh

mostly because it has the Seahaven solitaire, as well as Canfield

I don't see yumex

yum install yumex
you can also use the commandline

AWOSLappy; Fedora Core 6?

yum search timidity
:P

I like Kpat, but the one thing that no fedora linux card suite has that I have found is Pyramid. ;_;
nup, Fedora 7

check aisleriot, if you haven't yet

oooooooh yum search! like apt-cache! woot! thanks!

AWOSLappy; ah. yumex = the shiz
lol

someone knows how to get support for tv pci card?

someone should read the manpage for yum sometime to see all the neat stuff it can do

Ahhhh crap it's timidity++

(hint hint)

hehe

AWOSLappy; get excited once you do 10 searches because of a capitol letter
AWOSLappy; i still suggest yumex

lol, yes

hi guys, is there anyway to check all the packages already installed on the system for dependency problems?

might give the live cd a go

livecd installation is pretty broken

oh my gosh what have i done!?!?

I think you closed Konversation.

i tried installing compiz and i come back with gnome!!!

rofl

i don't know how that happened

sudo yum remove gnome

i just want to have a gander at fedora on the desktop tbh

there were a few gnome things that were dependencies for compiz

WOOT, it's playing

hmmm

are there any decent repos for desktop system? so i can install mp3 xvid etc etc and have a usable desktop

cheers !

k31th, nice is awesome but the livecd leaves a lot of dependencies out so if you want to install use dvd

livna.

yeah you get some gnome some kde stuff with compiz

k31th. livna is a repo with all propietary things

ok

and is very decent at it

again you can 'switchdesk kde' if you prefer it, for your user account

i can't imagine i would get the whole gnome environment though

wicked thanks guys.

although you may need to yum install switchdesk

not a problem, k31th.

lol

rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm && yum install xine xmms-mp3
might want lame, gstreamer ugly and bad … lots of useful packages there

*liblame
I'm pretty sure it's "liblame", not just "lame".

most likely
I am coming from a debian background i find yum pretty slow compared to apt tbh ? any tips

yum pwns apt.

? lol how so

not sure why it would seem slower. it flies on my laptop
well, I've always been partial to rpm, but it seems more responsive on my laptop. in fact the whole of Linux seems faster on Fedora

lame-libs I think

gnome ?

then again the apt I used was in ubuntu, it could be faster in real Debian.
no, I use KDE…well I'm converting to fvwm, but I use KDE right now

just burning the fedora 7 live cd

anyone in here use aMSN ?

how can i upgrade from fc6 to fc7?
what is the best way

dvd

clean install via the dvd after backing up everything with Mondo Rescue so you have a disaster recovery backup you can restore from bare metal with

i think that when you boot from the install dvd you have the option to upgrade, but i don't know, i only had to do it once

that would be the 'best way'

i can't install from the DVD

the dvd with a backed up /home

with the libata changes, now /dev/hda is /dev/sda

i have to upgrade from fc6 to fc7
via the internet

that could cause some issues

what kind of issues?

not advisable

why?

omarssxs, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null

that was funny

you will most likely end up with a non-bootable system that way

i would just try to get the dvd

you need to use the media

i cannot
the box is in a remote location

if you're trying to mount /dev/hda1 in /etc/fstab and it's now known as /dev/sda1 ? what kind of issues do you THINK would happen under those circumstances ?

if this is a server host .. you should not be using fedora

why not?

centos or if you can afford the fee RHEL

i had centos
and i had the admin's remove it
and put fedora

because fedora is not made for production server environments

desktop-effects (compiz) gives me a new error this time

I highly recommend you have someone at the remote location do it, OR go do it yourself

it is unable to function

linux_stu; and that error is what?

ask in #compiz — they're better outfitted to help in odd cases like yours

one sec
http://pastebin.ca/648043

Now what's involved in installing/using newer Compiz-fusion plugins with the Fedora package of compiz?

fedora is a fast paced, short life cycle distro, mainly used for desktops or testing server functionality with new applications .. it's not meant to run your business or critical apps on

when i had beryl working with gentoo, i had to have xgl installed

fedora uses AIGLX

definitely ask in #compiz

does beryl work well in fedora ?

ok

k31th, yes

is fc6 so much different than fc7?

yes it does

linux_stu; kill the gtk window manager.. start beryl

what about nvidia drivers

yes it is.
what about them?

linux_stu; start desktop-effects* sorry

is there a package for nv drivers

yes

or do i have to do it by hand?

in the repo we told you about

how can i learn to package for fedora

http://compiz.org/NVidia

yum install kmod-nvidia
after you enable livna

Fedora 7 now has the nouveau drivers as well as nv

there are many packages i need that are not available, how can i create the packages myself and add to fedora

I'd rather see people help test nouveau than use kmod-nvidia and get that thing robust

what packages?

there is also an X11-nvidia driver, i just installed both, it's using one of them… :-/

I have one volume group00 but I believe there is free space within my volumegroup00? how can I find it?

didn't change anything

opsec, latest eclipse, CDT, boost

linux_stu; eh?

anyone knows at which hour cron daily operates ?

get the source rpms and rebuiild them with rpmbuild
have you checked in development?

linux_stu; ask #comipz

yum –enablerepo=development search foo

killing gtk window manager then starting desktop-effects still gave me the same error

anyone knows at which hour cron daily execute the commands ?

how can we finf free space in a volume group? I want to know If I could Increase mys logical volumes?

opsec, thanks it is in development. But what is the status of this repo? and when do they make it to the core?

check the changelog
it varies by packaage

does anyone use a microsoft webcam ?

yum –enablerepo-development install foo

opsec, sorry let me rephrase, I meant what is the status of 'development' and when does it become 'fedora' are packages from 'development' safe to use?

i understood you fully

They become part of Fedora when they are released… they are not intended for use until then.

development are packages that are being tested for later release into updates-testing and Everything repos
you can use them by using the above command

opsec, ok, so i should treat it like a beta then?

if they do not work for you or have bugs .. you are expected to file the appropriate reports

thanks, i'm ok with yum

More like alpha …

opsec ok
what is beta updates-testing?

there are not betas or alphas here

yeah but just so i can get a rough idea

Testing means beta in Fedora land… basically… Fedora doesn't use that terminology though.

ok

instead there are development and testing repos

i read you

development = alpha … testing = beta

got it thanks
btw how can one contribute to the whole packaging phenomenon
so to knida be part of the whole revolution

by finding a program to package and submitting it or join #fedora-devel and ask someone to help them

ok. do you work for the project yourslef?

i do things to help the fedora community, yes

it must be rewarding, i'll see what's going on in devel

mostly, frustrating .. but somehow worth the frustration

i guess because of the initial learning curve with newbies?

the more you begin to learn .. the more frustrating it is to repeat the same old stuff to people

where do I click to start my ssh session? (J/K) hides

Selinux was giving me the weird erros with Zen. I wonder why the warnings weren't popping up to let me know?

usually around the 3rd time you tell someone the same thing
xen?
yum install setroubleshoot

everytimei reboot and wpa_supplicant tries to start it spits out a bunch of "IOCTL????: No Such device" errors, then segfaults. What causes this?

wrong settings?

the kernel module maybe isn't loading for that device

what device?

his wireless card

ipw2200

hwcrypto=off?

i compiled the kernel module for ipw2200 and ieee80211 from newest source avail.
hwcrypto=on

that's probably why

hrm?

since both of those things are already provided by stock fedora kernels

and what options do you set for wpa_supplicant?

but the stock kernels have old drivers

you were asking… ?
and why do you believe you need the "very latest" ?

-D[what]? you need wext instead of ipw2200

did ipw2200 and ieee80211 in the fedora kernel suddenly stop working?

i need the very latest vus the stock kernel's drivers crash repeatedly when using WPA
the new drivers dont
*cus

once you taint your own kernel with things like this .. we really can't support you

it happens w/ stock kernel & drivers too!
wifi does work, but a segfault during boot worries me

i've never heard of this issue

im on ipw2200 right now

i'd think quite a few more people would be in here complaining about it

Hi

well the stock ipw drivers crash under high load & wpa. The modules crashes and uses 99% of cpu until i rmmod it

Is there a way to run Vetrilo on fedora?

server yes, client no

Anyone had a problem with Xen grabbing the mouse pointer and then when you ctrl-alt to release it, the mouse sticks to the left side of the screen?

So can't run a vetrilo client

does f7 include support for configuring a virtual network interface, one without a physical network card?
in addition to the loopback interface

how do i add the livna repository?

opsec, yeah i asked, but seems to be mostly python stuff, i use that at work so…

odla, which fedora you running?

f7

odla, visit http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/
click on the f7 rpm and install it

thanks

opsec, oh I just read up, I realise what you were saying now lol!

possibly useful script i'm playing with to get info from users,

has anyone tried the kickoff-qt packages for kde on kde-apps.org? i am asking because i am curious as to whether or not it's packaged properly or if it'll cripple kicker?

how do I configure a static ip address on my fc5 machine?

use the system - administration - network

is there a text-mode equivalent?

try system-config-network-tui
I can't guarantee. haven't run fc5 in a loooong time
also, fc5 is out of support. upgrade if you can (don't know if you were aware, so I say anyway)

seems to have worked…
i'm aware.
this is my mythtv box, and upgrading the OS requires a *lot* more than just upgrading the OS, as a result.

OK, point taken

my netgear firewall/router bit the dust, so I'm temporarily using a (POS) linksys router…
….which won't assign IP based on MAC address..

why not just run dhcpd on a single pc?
set it to send settings to all hosts..

so, as a result, my mythtv box keeps getting assigned the next available address, rather than the one it should get
dhcp is (usually) handled by the firewall/router (when it's operational).. replacement is in the mail to me.. so, this is just a temporary fix.

heh….dhcp will never be handled by the router in my house (if I ever get a router)

netgear does a fine job of it.. and port routing, as well.
the stop-gap linksys router that's in place (temporarily), however, is a piece of… well, it's just not as sophisticated.

hehehe…nice save
;-)

there is fedora live cd that i can continue from him and install to the hd ? ( like ubuntu 7.04) ?

yes its on the fedora page I've tried it

available in gnome and kde flavours … recommends kde

i dont ask about desktop , i ask if there is a live cd that is also the installion cd ?

yes you can install from the live-cd

yes it's on the fedora page
NicNac replied to this a few minutes ago

NicNac , waht is fedora page ?

see the fedora url in /topic … go to it
don't forget about google

gnome is the default desktop of fedora ?

Yes, as I recall gnome was the default desktop

Hello..

zcat thanks..
linuxisrael… cool

Ok need some help. I have a webserver thats old ands to be migrated. Lots of custom software. So I need to rsync if possible everything over.. what should I exclude, when I rsync? Anyone have an idea?

i cant enable the output to the crt display any help please, i installed i810switch but doesnt work

hmm, is there no way to install php mysql with yum?
err not mysql
sqlite

mikefoo, only you are in a position to figure out what needs to be backed up.

php doesn't come with sqlite, and there is no php-sqlite package

TD-Linux, yum list \*packagesubstring\*

and pear doesn't work

Hmmm… try scanning with xsane and a Canon N670U scanner with f7. The scanner makes an awful noise.

zcat, it seems that there is no support
I would think that php services sqlite would be a popular feature

TD-Linux, php5 has sqlite builtin.

zcat, not the Fedora version
it's specifically compiled –without-sqlite, I think.
the bugtracker has the package, but it isn't in the repositores.

anyone here get on usenet at all ?

I have a theory that redhat is being paid by mysql database services :P

TD-Linux what makes you think that ?

they compiled php without sqlite support and there is no sqlite package
pecl fails to install it too
err

TD-Linux: wrong. sqlite-3.3.13-1.fc7

TD-Linux, http://us3.php.net/manual/en/ref.pdo.php

there is no php-sqlite package I mean.

TD-Linux, php -i | grep sqlite

aah, I have to go through pdo!
fortunately, I'm starting to write this from scratch, so that won't be too big of a problem.

Nobody's stopping you from building some other bindings.

TD-Linux: what are you trying to do?

write a 'helper script' to keep track of a few things for a game.
it just needs a small database, and I want to try sql rather than flat files.

is there a newsreader other than Klibido worth trying out ?

ok, yeah, you should be able to use sqlite via php no problem…

TD-Linux: but then you need the sql host deamon running aswell as the game, correct?

sqlite doesn't need a daemon

for pecl you can use php-pecl-sqlite or php-pecl-pdo-sqlite packages I would guess

Alright then.

yum search news

there aren't any pecl packages either.

Imagine the fun with yum if you could stop the sqlite daemon.

i'll take a look at it, thanks

"it" being a whole bunch of alternatives

o, thanks

the answer to every package query is a yum command

yup, I like yum for that

i just cant enable the out crt display, my card is an 945gm intel
any help please

f7?

yes nirik, in fedora core 6 i didnt have this problem
any idea ?

does 'xrandr –auto' get it working (with the crt attached)

let me chek
check
yes that works!!!

cool. See 'man xrandr' for all the other fun things you can do with it.
(put the other monitor in different positions, or clone, different resolutions, etc)

is it possible to run that command with fn + F5 as before in f6

For some odd reason, i have to manually activate eth0 when i login to F7, so i can use the internet…
any ideas?

hmm anyone know what the package name for the gdm source is? Though i actually doubt there is any.. 'yum search gdm' only showed 'binaries'.
i had plans to take a peak at the gdmgreeter code

not that I know of off hand.
check to make sure it's set to activate on boot. Either by running the system-config-network gui, or looking at the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
the source is in a src.rpm for gdm…

nirik ok. but shouldn't yum list it?

no, the src repositories are not enabled by default.

Thanks nirik

oh ok

yumdownloader –source gdm

in fedora core 6 fedora detected my video card as intel 810 so i used i810switch with no problem and fn + f5, why now fedora says i have another card

(Requires yum-utils)

yes, it's using the spiffy new intel driver. It's much nicer…

but now fn + f5 doesnt work , im too lazy haha

ricky heh yeah wasn't able to find it :P

thanks guys
see you later

ricky hmm any idea where that is extracted to when i 'install' it?

/usr/src/redhat/?

ah ok

When I enabled Desktop-Effects (compiz) it looks like the window-decorator changed. That the case? Titles now appear centered instead of left-justified. Any way to tweak this?

*yawn.. ok thanks.. will peek at the source tomorrow

yes, when you enable that you switch from metacity window manager to compiz. You will need to look at the window manager config to see if you can adjust it the way you want it.

hey im doing a dual boot install of fedora if anyone has some time to help

Help what?

i need some help setting up the hard drive partition

details .. details .. details

would be nice huh?
Perhaps he thought this was #fedora_mind_readers

i need windows to have some free space and i need to know what options to set

Getting warmer

set option epsilon delta Q63

We can only provide advice as helpful as we have context for. IOW, more details from you = more useful advice from us.

i know i need to make a custom partition for example swap and root but i dont know the sizes

swap == about double your ram

i want to set aside about 20 gigs for fedora

you'll want /home and /boot and / as well
better

and what sizes do they need to be

Use LVM so that you're not locked in

These are some pretty basic questions. Both reading any wikis or using Google?

1gb /boot 300mb /home 15gb / the rest

s/Both/Bother

the last thing new users need to wrap their minds around is anything "virtual"
bthe last thing new users need to wrap their minds around is anything "virtual"/b

What's virtual?

So should I use ext3 for the filesystem when setting partitions

the way lvm handles drives
if you want .. or xfs is you have gigantic files

I think it's more dangerous for a new user to choose bad FS sizes and have pains when they find that they need to resize them .

I wont be resizing
I just need to machine for scripting resons

But LVM is relatively transparent until you need to change something.

*reasons

drives fail

I just want to do a fixed 20 gig system

Ext3 is Ext2 + journaling and is more stable when it comes to crashes, but ext3 has NO undelete ability whereas ext2 has some.

so I cant remove things from the drive at ext3

yes you can
he means drive recovery

ah

for data loss

ok thanks for the clarification

i thaught reiserfs was the best hosting fs?

once you've deleted it .. it's gone

File system corruption as a result of an unclear shutdown

Ok I am at the home parition screen of my live cd
I selected custom partition setting

the /home partition is a useful one to have
that contains all of your settings for any programs your user runs

So my sata drive appears

the /root folder or partition is similar .. but it only for root

with my ntfs windows partition and then there is a free space selection as well
with my ntfs windows partition and then there is a free space selection as well
WHy are you talking in third person

he's emo

I dont care dont hold my hand if you know of a good guide or something I will do myself I just heard linux people are usually willing to help new people
I a just trying to get started
*I am

we are
some of us may be burnt out though
don't take it personally

Alright I selected the free space and hit create new partition

The OSS community is VERY helpful, but I/we still expect people to put out some effort on their own and it appears to me that you haven't (my judgement).

it brings up a new screen saying mount point

personally, i would have just used gparted and created an ext3 partition. then just select remove linux FS's and data

the mount point is the place in the / you'd like to mount this partition

When I google "installing Fedora" the first link I find is a step-by-step Howto that includes pre-install considerations.

there are standard folders like /home /boot /root /var /etc

right I see them

and there can also be nonstandard ones you make up like /storage or /mydrive

true
I did look up soem how to's but get an error
not enought space to create partition
but I have about 130 gigs free

you need to select the free space
then select "new"

got it

then choose how much of that free space you're going to use for this new partition

well there havent got it yet

then hit ok

what mount point should I use

i explained that
scroll up

the mount point is the place in the / you'd like to mount this partition

right

/ is the root of the filesystem

I just tried making a swap at 2048 and get this error
Partitioning failed: Not enough space left to create partition for None."

/home is or can be a single mount point within the root

swap is different
the filesystem type is not ext3

lol slow net today for me

it is swap

That is what I tried
anyways just tried making a home partition on ext3 at 300mb and get the same error
Partitioning failed: Not enough space left to create partition for /home.

linux mounts partitions within a "mount point" in /
you do not want a 300mb /home
that will not be nearly enough
that should take up the bulk of the 20gb you have for fedora

man this internet is sloooooow

noise.

If 300 didnt work then how is 15 gigs
sorry for reading wrong

f_newton, mine is good for once, lol

you are not doing something correctly

should I check force to be primary

since you have not listened several times already .. i suspect you are failing from not paying attention
no

k
I will say something odd

select the entire 20gb you have of free space

is on the screen in allowable drives teh drive is shown but grayed out and I cant select it

then select "new"

some so called IT tech came over n changed a switch with a 10mg instead of a 10/100
I am going to raise a bit of bleep in the morning when they get back

you are putting noise into the channel
if at least one drive is not highlighted .. then you cannot install on any
if they are all greyed out they are not being detected fully somehow

Could it be because windows was installed first setting the ntfs on the drive
Well I have this question
I am lookinhg at the drives and /dev/sda1 has all the room in it free only has 8 megs

How can I make GDM use my .xsession? The "system default" option always launches GNOME…

opsec I have taken a screenshot if that will help

Which script/util can provide detail information about CD-ROM (drive specs), as in the KInfoCenter?

try smolt
smoltSendProfile
yum install smolt

opsec do I need to partition using gparted before I try installing for example making my partitions in windows then trying to install linux

I did "sysreport" But, that's condensed and not pretty enough Is that what smolt uses?

sounds like windows has taken your entire drive
with the 8mb you described at the end of free space .. this is typical of windows
perhaps you should reinstall windows leaving 20gb free for fedora

gparted should you resize that windows partition so you can work around it
gparted should help you resize that windows partition so you can work around it

its too bad he or she cannot remove windows altogether
:/

hmm, i installed the group XFCE, then i purged the gnome desktop enviroment
now everything is fucked up :/
y?

smoltGui - nice py script

b52 you were advised to try things before removing gnome

presumably because you needed stuff that's in the Gnome group
someone might be able to help if you are more specific about what's broken

can i repair it?

of course one way or another

b52, how did you 'purge' it?

i started the package manager, and unchecked gnome desktop enviroment

b52, yum groupinstall gnome-desktop

even F7 cannot decode 1/third of chips and interfaces on this Intel SE7520 mfboard - encrypted headers, capacitors, resistors and diodes
funny, smolt sends info to smoon about Moonshine - sounds like anonymous bootleg operation

Hi. Quick - possibly stupid - question. I'm trying to get an FC7 install, but I don't particularly want to go the "reboot your computer" route. Is there anything similar to Debian's debootstrap method?

no

oO

Live CD install maybe.

requires a reboot

Well, at the end of course to get your system.

that's… interesting. So no way to hack it?
debootstrap lets you create a basic debian system from within any existing linux system. it downloads all the packages and installs them into a prefix

what release would you be installing from?

lenny
full LVM setup, no spare CDs

get diskboot.img, or boot pxe

whats your current os? if it has any virt ability you could install f7 in a virtual…

in theory you could get a chroot made between mock and yum or something, but you'd be in untested experimentation territory

it's lenny, and I have qemu available to me… I really don't fancy having inside a VM though
that's the sort of thing i'm after

Of course assuming you can get mock/yum/rpm on a Deb system.

mock seems like a pretty direct analogue of debootstrap. Fingers crossed it's as portable
(debootstrap has incredibly minimal deps, so runs on just about anything )

is there any particular reason you don't want to reboot?

mock isn't anything like debootstrap

mock is merely a chroot tool, mostly for building rpms actually

mm. maybe more like pbuilder
"Basically, mock creates a chroot and does a minimal install of your target OS using yum"
is what I want
hmm. I can install yum in debian, at any rate

yes.. and u can install apt in fedora

yep. So I can presumably use this, in conjunction with it's –installroot option, to get an FC7 install going

whats the name of the postgre sql server service?

postgresql ? ie, 'service postgresql status'

alrighty
Either I'm about to kill my main system, or get a fedora chroot

good luck with that lupine_85.

had to create a custom yum.conf; I'm trying to install bash into the partition just now
well, that worked. time for yum install yum

does yum install yum work?

well, it installs yum (I'm using –installroot, of course)
trying to use the installed yum is… problematic
Program version 4.3 doesn't match environment version

im trying to format a drive that was ext3 to xfs…. but it keeps coming up ….. /dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!
what does that mean?

TUplink2, means you cant format a running partiton

is it mounted? try unmounting it first and making sure nothing is using it.

hello

'df' to see whats mounted, then 'umount /whatever/' to unmount it.

um… its not in there
i umounted it

how can I for a package to install with yum -Uvh?

man yum install

something else is making it busy. Does it have a swap partition on it? or a raid? or a lvm volume?

mikeones, also man yum localinstall

no… jsut an IDE 120GB
/dev/sdb1 * 1 14593 117218241 83 Linux

TUplink2, how did you boot to do this

-Uvh is for RPM command I think… for upgrading, showing verbose in has mode
hash*

dont…. its a second drive
well really a 3rd
i boot to sda*

hal-gnome is really nice device manager
shows all the devices detected by system
I mean HAL
so pretty much everything

how do i just delete the partition
?

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

can you pastebin the exact error you are getting when you try and do the mkfs?
ucan you pastebin the exact error you are getting when you try and do the mkfs?/u

http://rafb.net/p/Kv6KHK75.html

pastebin df then

http://rafb.net/p/Xf62go18.html
was doing that as you said it

Sure / isn't it?

huh…
its not there or in mount

how about output from a pvdisplay?

what is pvdisplay

I suspect your / is it.. run pvdisplay
Outputs info for the LVM

PV Name /dev/sda2

heh
That'd be wise to format eh
Although / is FULL for some reason, you might not want to format it

im not formating / :P

Umm
Put it together

put what together?

Oh, oops..
ahem

ok, so sda2 is the only lvm pv? no mention of sdb1 in there?

nope… non in the LVM

ok, anything about it in /proc/swaps or /proc/mounts ?

i added b1 after system setup
swaps is logVol01

ah, is it in /etc/mtab?
I bet it is.

nope
i had it in fstab… but removed it after i umounted it

What about lsof -n | grep sdb1
for kicks
Hmm, maybe nothing would come out of that..
Nevermind

nothing
how can i remove the partition then recreate it?

you can use fdisk, but thats likely not going to help. The problem is that mkfs thinks it's still mounted.

Do you want to use LVM?

lvm on sda

It's in use.. somewhere…. You might try mounting and unmounting it again, but I suspect you're gonna need to reboot

errr i dont want to rebot

Server?

verify that it is unmounted, reboot if needed seeing that you removed it from fstab

well TV recording

That's what bittorrent is for

if you want to use LVM, the system-config-lvm tool is quite handy if you are recreating an LVM

Sleep time for me..

puzzling. Well, it sounds like you may need to just reboot…

TUplink2, so where did sdb come from, and what did you change? if you've got other mounted partitions on the drive the kernel might still be using old info
