im trying to use an old ibook hard drive for a linux installation qtparted is telling me the partition changes

yeah well there are no devices created which I can mount

LOL I had training on Linux LVM a week ago

_2intense - http://pastebin.ca/667307

pending analysis, 1 sec
which devs are you trying to mount?
I mean the dev names

they are called /dev/var/www and /dev/var/toplevel

you have to DECOMPRESS the kernel headers…..
OK, let me check

might be vgchange

_2intense - can you give me a hint how to do that?

hi
i have problem
i am installing Etch on my PC

nils don't change the vgs if you only want to mount

and he never wanted me to tell him what IDE driver my disk wnats

follow this example

it's vgchange -ay

bu today ? i do not know what to select

mount /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 /var/www or what have you (use the right values from lvdisplay)
drew 1 sec mate I'm multitasking

yeah well I know that, I just didn't know how to make that device appear. But now I know.

does anybody know ?

drew you downloaded the headers with aptget didn't you?

SKOM, are you done with the install?

intense yes - apt-get install linux-headers-(version)

thanks

thanks anyways

cd /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-5-686
what's in there

arch block crypto drivers fs include init ipc kernel lib Makefile mm Module.symvers net scripts security sound usr

hm, it seems that there is no way, that a client can list all exported directories of a nf-server, is this correct?

Yegods, I just looked at aptitude for the first time in I don't know. We're not seriously suggesting newbies use that? It's extemely scary.

no i'm not

Anybody here recommend Totem as a music player?

it appeared during instalation
i have WD Caviar 84AA

Spiritus55, no, not rally.

I would either 1.) not worry about it (it didn't ask me, or if it did, I don't know how it will affect you) or 2.) ask someone else.
Recommend one to me then?

or is there a way to do it?

it sounds all right, are you compiling as root?
huh you are

Spiritus55, QuodLibet

can it decode m4a's?

_2intense - yes

Spiritus55, if you have the right codec installed, everything should be able to play m4as

I apparently don't have the right codec, then.

Spiritus55, the codec does the decoding

_2intense - i am logged in via openssh, dunno if that makes any difference

and now time to build a new kernel on a system which I can only access via ssh, aka russian roulette

no it's all right, are you sure that module is not available in a debianized format? It seems like you're missing some libs somewhere

What codec would I need to decode MP3's?

Spiritus55, possibly libavcodec0d

worst case scenario: install gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad

can i install the 32bit java plugin on my amd64 system with dpkg and set it up to run with nspluginwrapper?

I tried that, and it said It wasn't there.

to make the zaptel module you have to use make linux26 instead of just make

Couldn't find package gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad

Spiritus55, or libmpeg4ip-0: if not there install them

it's on debian-multimedia
mmm let's find the factoid ….
!debian-multimedia

from memory, debian-multimedia is a repository of unofficial Debian packages, not in Debian for various legal reasons, maintained by Christian Marillat. For instructions to add APT sources, ask me about debian-multimedia.etch.

Couldn't find package libmpeg4ip-0

!tell Spiritus55 about debian-multimedia.etch

_2intense - yeah i tried that - "make: *** No rule to make target `linux26'. Stop."

hello

i'm just unsure how to actually get the plugin binary on my box

let's recap. configure and make clean work right?

i am getting an error aclocal not found

zomg. enough

_2intense - configure works - neither make, make clean nor make linux26 work - see pastebin link i posted above for output of make clean

alright i got talked into it. i'm going to d/l testing with jigdo and try it out

what version of GCC do you have? you need 3.3 along 4.0 for the module to work

dunno, whatever apt-get gave me…

query mate, will ya
aptitude and look at the version

coldsteal, what are you doing with automake and autoconf packages?

yoi need to install (since you have aptit open.. gcc 3.3)

"gcc -v": gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)

I think we've solved the prob

so i need an older gcc…

from zaptel doc: 'make CC=gcc-3.3 linux26' if you have gcc-4.0 as default, since some modules use depreciated c extentions.
and of course install gcc 3.3

Spiritus55, http://wiki.debian.org/MultimediaCodecs?highlight=%28codec%29

i have a problem i have two interface ( subnet ) 192.168.1.0 (eth0) and 192.168.2.0 (eth1) .. i have ACCEPT FORWARD between eth0 and eth1 but when i want to ping from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.2.2 it failed …
nobody have idea ?
it's a gateway

how do I get a repos' gpg key if there's no data on the website?

is ip forwarding enabled on /proc?

yes, I have Internet on both sides
yes and*

hueeee
i had tried installation again

from which machine are you trying to ping?

yo

and that problem with ide driver is here again

how do i find a file from command line

fas3r, echo "1" /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

find / -name thename

it's enable

thx

does exist some universal driver?

is there any way to reset the permissions on system files and directories quickly to their defaults?

from 192.168.2.2
to 192.168.1.2

you aren't filtering ICMP are you? :P

nop

fas3r, routing table is properly set?

it's the problem i have no firewall, i have just masquerade

check the def gw settings on 2.2

for connect to internet
and echo "1" in ip_forward

check the settings with sysctl -a | grep ipv4 or icmp

the def gw in host 2.2 should be 2.1 or whatever eth1 is

i think i solved it

Dexter_F, have you looked in the repo for a 'keyring' package?

my music keeps droping out and in how i fix it?

hmm, no. will do.

it's good i have look

have you checked the default gw on host 2.2?
traceroute?

yep it's good
and tracert stop at the gateway ..

which is 2.1 right?
check the other chains on iptables on the gw, reset the counters and see where the connections stop

yes
the gateway for 192.168.1.0 is 192.168.1.1
and for 192.168.2.0 it's 192.168.2.1

it's probably the output chain defaulting to drop

the two interface on my gateway
no i have look …

ok, followed instructions on website, said install multimedia-keyring

i'm trying to find the .jigdo file for amd64/testing but the url on the debian site just hangs

did that, now on aptitude update the multimedia repos are ignored

Dexter_F, that's odd, i found once i installed that keyring, i don't get the message about GPG key unknown, but i still get a warning about every package i install

aptitude update

i can't find the url for amd64/testing to enter into jigdo
the link on the debian jigdo page won't open so i can get the url

karsten, i did that, i still get the warnings, the one about 'unverified source' or something like that

free up the other chains on the gw as a test

Do you have keys for _all_ your package sources?

allow everything then close down one chain at a time

i have just one chain …

karsten, i don't know, i just added the debian-multimedia repo to sources.list, and installed the keyring from their repo

input output forward

and it's for masquerade other computer

can i just hover over the link and copy it?

karsten, that's not a big issue for me, but Dexter_F says when he did aptitude update he doesn't get any of the repo anymore

yep but policy are at ACCEPT ..

wanted to add a debian-multimedia mirror

fas ok now it's a bit clearer

wait, keyring from *their* repo?

so you get to the internet from the .1.x subnet and .2.x but NOT from 1.x to 2.x

Dexter_F, yes, i think it's called debian-multimedia-keyring or something like that

yeah
problem solved

how.. I mean, I can't even update with the repo
i got that, thought it came from etch itself

yes it's that

Dexter_F, no, it is in the repo, so you where able to see the packages at that point

_2intense - can i change the defalut compiler? it just doesnt seam to work

you are MASQing between subnets and you get to 1.x from 2.x with a nat address
Drew have you installed a 3.x compiler?

Dexter_F, look in aptitude search for something like libdvdcss, that is not in etch repos, so if you can see that, then you have the repo working ok

_2intense - yes i did apt-get on gcc-3.3 and it's dependancies

make CC=gcc-3.3 linux26

well, on aptitude upgrade nothing happens, 0 Byte. thought a few libs were at least substituted. il check something…

Well, boys, I'm off to church. Bbl.

when i ping from 1.x or 2.x to 1.x or 2.x you think i use public adress ?

_2intense - yeah, it scrolls a couple of screens and then: "make: *** No rule to make target `linux26'. Stop."

sorry english and me …

try "make CC=gcc-3.3"

ah. works.
Bob knows why.

yes, I think so, I has the same problems with a network of a customer

make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-5-686'
make[2]: Makefile: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `Makefile'. Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-5-686'
make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2

check with tcpdump

hmm does grub start counting kernels with 0 or 1…

sorry, i guess that was too much

how do i turn iceweasel into firefox

anyway, that doesnt work either

IW is firefox only w/o the graphics

ok just i need to make NAT redirection from eth1 to eth2 and vice versa, it's that ?

TurboBee, in what way do you want to change it?

or SNAT / DNAT ?

yes, that is basically it

basically i want it to say firefox
and use firefox icon
etc

between local network you need to forward

oki thank _2intense ^^ i go to test

between LAN and inet you need to nat

Drew__, apt-get install linux-tree && cd /usr/src/ && tar -xvzf linux-2.6tab

TurboBee, you would need to get the firefox from the official site, and install manually i guess, it's not in the debian repos

ah

you're very wemlcome fas3r
mbroeker thanks for the help

TurboBee, but you should probably remove iceweasel first, i would expect them to clash

hehe

I'm trying to help everyone but I only have 1 brain… but it's fun

just use both halves of your brain symaltaneously

mbroeker - E: Couldn't find package linux-tree

er simoltaneously
er

Drew__, ok take the linux-source then: linux-tree is specific to lenny

forget it
i can't spell

I can't, the other half is currently in use by another process that I can't kill -9 without going to jail

hey heycan i use an etch package in lenny ?

hehe

but i haven't forward tables in -t nat ?

don't masq your individual subnets, masq the default gw

hum ..

Drew__, which version? 2.6.x.y? what is x what is y

otherwise you would have to do some prerouting checks and the likes

Hey, can I use etch packages in lenny?
Like, just one set of packages. (OpenVZ Set)

mbroeker - i just downloaded linux-source-2.6.18

Drew__, ok. and uname -r says something like 2.6.18

linuxtk11 and UptimeFactor-Jus you probably can, i have, but sometimes i've had dependency nightmares with mixing packages like that

if your uname -a reports 2.6.18-something you're ok

uname -r: 2.6.18-5-686

oops sorry mbroeker he's all yours

Drew__, ok thats looks fine

sorry i don't understand .. i go to google .. I don't want to abuse

Like, its OpenvZ (just needs its kernel) thats the only dependency, do yout hink I'd have much of a prob?

Drew__, now cd /usr/src/ and untar the fedora linux source tar.bz2

use normal forwards, not masq, between your two subnets and only masquerade your default gw towards the internet

ln -s linux-source-2.6.18 linux

UptimeFactor-Jus, i don't know what OpenVZ is, but i guess the only way to find out is to try

Drew__, say when you are done and ready for the next step…

stdin: not in gzip format ??

Drew__, tar -xvjf

if it's a bz2 is -xvbf mate

i'll have to write myself a cheatsheet for that sometime

-b has nothing to do with bzip2

Drew__, all done?

I beg your pardon?

@link

if it's a bz2 is -xvbf mate

the -b option to tar has nothing at all to do with bzip2

ok all done

hi everybody

Drew__, and you have made the symlink ?

yes

you're right, I meant j LOL

Drew__, if so, cd linux and make menuconfig

heh

if that works, you are fine

somebody have a socks install on his debian ?

it's midnight in my timezone SerajewelKS, bear w/me LOL

i get a menu

!tell greenlynx about poll

in blue, Drew__ `?

jep

yes, it works

ok sorry
i don't know it

does tor count as socks? :P

Drew__, try a fresh "zcat /proc/config.gz

that's ok, just ask your question

Drew__, does it work ?

well my tor won't work

you might also try #debian-fr if you speak french

i can't open the port

_2intense does it provide a socks interface? I think it does

mbroeker - no

excuse for my english i'm french ^^

Yes kevin, tor does

ok Drew__ look in /boot/config*

this ? http://pastebin.com/m612cc1f1

Drew__, is there a config-2.6.18-something?

SerajewelKS there nobody on debian-fr ^^

yes

you're right, as you can see yourself you're MASQing everything FROM .1.x OR 2.x, no matter the destination

i confirm what greenlynx say :p

cp /boot/config-2.6.18-xyz /usr/src/linux/.config

hello, I sometimes have lags when I start applications (e.g. terminal) with gnome , how can I diagnose what the problem is ?

ok thank i come back i go to test

lol thx fas3r ^^

done

de rien :p

Drew__, cd /usr/src/linux/ && make modules_prepare

tiens que utilizer dedicated ip forwarding entre .2.x and 1.x et nat pour l'internet

Drew__, after that step, you will be able to build your kernel module outside the tree

^^

does someone know a webbased user management except webmin ? something php based ?

hello folks.. if i got a x86_64 processor arch, should i be downloading the AMD64 version of debian?

good _2intense ..

depends.

*** No rule to make target `modules_prepare'. Stop.

depends on what?

i think it's same for me ..

I've been to canada LOL

lol oki ^^

what will you use the system for and how many ram you have.

if somebody know a good proxy software it's ok for me

err how much
what do you want to proxy?

squid?

squid
:p

not just a http one

Drew__, make prepare then?

it is not a problem to run 32 bit applications on 64 bit systems as i understand it, in chmod'ed env

i want to tunnel all my network

squid does have plugins for other protocols

2GB ram btw

Drew__, anyway, try to build your kernel module right now outside this tree

*** No rule to make target `include/config/auto.conf', needed by `include/config/kernel.release'. Stop.

for a tunnel you should use openssh

tunnel whats that

yeah well it's possible but why would you want 64 bit if you don't have applications benefiting from it.
it is still a large bit of hassle to deal with the chmoded stuff

sorry

Drew__, ok cd /usr/src/linux && make oldconfig

aren't most(tm) applications ported to 64 bit yet?

i don't know the english word

mbroeker - that worked

ok try to compile your kernel module

tunneling ??

yes, most… if you don't use proprietary software you might as well use 64 bit

64 bit in user space is useless, we sparc folks avoid it since linux was ported LOL

Drew__, if it works, you are fine

but it doesn't help either so stick with 32 bit if you have less than 3GB RAM… I even use PAE on this system to avoid 64 bit hassle

well, only prop. software i use will be the nvidia drivers (sorry, but the open drivers just aren't good enough.. )

Drew__, if not, then you need to build and install this kernel from source and reboot with this new kernel

not flash, acrobat reader or stuff like that?

if you want nvidia drivers stick to a 32bit userspace

well I think there are 64 bit drivers now but I don't know

not really.. well i guess the occasional flash vid will appear on my browser..

google earth is not in any deb repos, right?

there's no real advantage to 64bit nowadays (in user space, in kernel space there actually is)

mbroeker, ok ill try that, thanks for the help

i will just follow your advice and stick to 32bit

no 64 bit flash plugin available I think…

Dexter_F, i think an installer is in the non-free, same as flash, but last time i tried, it was broken, so i installed manually

just seems a shame to get a 64 bit cpu and not being able to fully utilize it

non-free…. hmm.. forgot that… need to touch up sources.list some more

oh well, it's just 32 bits… you can still use all the cores and stuff

do you have more than 3GB?

should my etch work with ipv6 by default, or do i need to change something? i'm wondering here why test sites don't work, if it's just settings, or my ISP

okay then.. next question: will i have to reinstall my current system (i386) to cope with the hardware upgrade?
no, i will have 2GB of ram

686 no?

well depends… 2.4.20 was the first kernel which was fully stable for my system.

what do you want with 64bit dists then?

intel quad core if you must know.. yeah i686 ..

there's a -k7
erm k8

i wasn't aware that 3GB was a minimum req.

We in the Sparc camp had mixed 32/64 releases (both of linux and solaris, and apps such as oracle) for years, it didn't matter all that much
32 bits can't address 3 gb of ram, that's why it's quoted.

it isn't. but the only advantage of 64bit over 32 is that you can adress 4GB and more. you don' gain the slightest bit of speed.

i see

not true… depends on the app

example?

you don't want to go down the PAE road…

most apps aren't optimized for 64b, on every opsys

databases
i wasn't going to

i guess i will just keep my current system then.. :P saves a lot of reinstalling anyways. .

we're talking enterprise grade dbs, not your amateur site with mysql here anyway

I sense a flamewar

nah we're all friends

still the same premise

well, I see how a db profits from directly adressing 4GB+, but that's because of the address space, which still comes down to: if you want 4gig+ go 64.

I had a 333-Mhz 64 bit cpu

that wasn't what i meant

well to take php mysql web hosting as example, there is PAE support in it but it isn't stable or enabled…

ok, how else?

Agreed completely, but do you really need 4gb dbs these days other than in data centres?

and I don't know of other means to access more than ~3GB in a single process

just my point

IIRC PAE also allows up to 64GB

yeah but it sucks.

PAE is *ugly*

the amount of data moved per op

physical address extension sucks
oops sorry I was preceded LOL

and most apps don't support pae

oh well fella, thanks for the chat, I am off to bed..

make them almost all apps

the… you can't cram 2×32 into 64 bit ops. that's not how it works.

you're still missing it ..

from a coding standpoint PAE is really really ugly
and mind you I'm a shitty coder LOL
I do storage stuff for a living though

so am I. still I'd seriuosly liek to know what other point there is in 64b…

well if storage doesn't work out for you, you can still join the typo3 developer team

but first I need to tinker with the sources…

well I prefer the hybrid approach, 64b kernel (with mmap and all) and 32bit userspace (proven by decades of coding by now)

also don't know of any other point other than allocating large amounts of RAM in a single process

Unless they need ASM guys I can't help much LOL

hehe

I work for a fibre channel storage company, it's all quite machine oriented

i'm sure a google of "32 bit vs 64 bit" would show mixed results .. as i said .. depends on the app

Is the current 2.6.22 in Debian tickless? (Wondering about tickless stability/worthiness…)

ill sure look into that. but not today, local time says "way too late"

oh well abrotman, every debate in the linux hosting world is awesome, starting from torvalds vs. tanenbaum

I recently installed postfix and when it asked if I wanted to use Local Only or Internet Site I chose Local Only and I was supposed to choose Internet Site. How can I figure out what I need to change to get it back to Internet Site?

it always does .. damn silly 24hour days!

it's half past midnight in my lovely TZ

dpkg-reconfigure postfix (IIRC)

happen to know ananke from #slackware? man had I darn nerdy geek arguments with that guy

jae, cheers

ah, back then…

no, I never logged into #slackware myself, too busy chasing girls on the internet when I was young

LOL

catched any?

yes sir, as a matter of fact

MB or GB?

but of course not on IRC

hehe

girls were in p2p nets
downloading backstreet boys and shit
one day I said "sure I'll fix your computer"
and I ended up fixing all the rest LOL

after sharing some trojans with them?
(hmm well even that could be a sexual metaphor)

LOL that brand is not published overseas, it's not mirrored on non-US LOL

if I want to rework a .tif image…would gimp work best, or would scribus, or inkscape ? ideas?

bonez39, for tiff files I always used gimp and it works

scribus and inkscape are vector based IIRC

isn't tif a bitmap format?

Is there a way to launch gnome on only one screen? (I am not using the xinerama extension)

Let's not forget xara either.

corel xara. yeah baby.

It's by Corel?

it was in 1995

uhm .. one monitor? or one viewport ?

it's work but how to add internet for 1.x and 2.x ? what i need to masquerade ? what go out from eth0 (internet interface) ?

and Gnome or X itself?

hey guys, i just completely removed mplayer and mozilla-mplayer and reinstalled the totem-mplayer plugin but it still plays with mplayer, any ideas?

Xara Xtreme. It was in Debian, but I can't find it right now.

I told you that was the problem

what is "it"?

now, use destination routing instead of masquerade

mpeg, avi, wmv, etc.

masq it's only good for a single host

hello my favorite peoples in the worlds

germans also included?

sure

got it, nevermind

I hate everyone equally

in other words, use your gateway as a router rather than masqing

hehe

and bear with me, it was three years ago last time I used iptables in a prod network
I was so happy

ok..gimp then

i need to use FORWARD new time ?

LOL

FORWARD with destination option

one screen. I have one display with two screens.

… :p

uhm .. your monitor has two screens ?

smoke break

Oh, right. xaralx
!info xaralx

you'll find examples on the net, but the matter is, use forwarding between the local nets (like a local router) and upstream from the default gw towards the internet. a forward rule will do, check the howtos

(Heavyweight vector graphics, illustration and DTP Program), section non-free/graphics, is optional. Version: 0.7r1692-2 (sid), Packaged size: 4783 kB, Installed size: 11820 kB

Each screen is attached to one monitor"

It's in non-free right now, but I think they're working out some chinks so they can move it down to main.

don't even mention smoking, I quit 10 days ago for the kids LOL

by "screen" I am referring to what X calls a "screen", which is different (usually part of) a "display"

hrm .. i'd guess you'd have to monkey with your X config ..
maybe ask #xorg
i dont' think it's a gnome issue

ok thank for your help i have better understand " I will come back " after my congratulation :p
see you soon everybody

s/is different/is different from/g

I'm really honoured to help
really
that makes me happy

not certain .. :p
thank

that's probably why I've been in support for the last 10 yrs lol

see you soon :p
+++

see ya
ATH+++
LOL
if someone still remembers that

It's not an "issue", it works great for the normal use-case (shows up automagically on both screens), I am just trying to find a way to make it only start on one of them (DISPLAY :0.1) and leave the other one unmanaged.

it's an "issue" for you

is anyone here aware of a method to achieve that?
werd.

that's why i mentioned #xorg

let me understand, do you want not to initialize a separate monitor on the same vga as part of the same display config?

!savage

http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html

gotta run

no, I just want to have gnome not draw anything on one of my screens.

The etch installer seems to have the annoying feature that you cannot easily select all locales to be installed.

why would you want all locales?

I'm on my eighth computer now where I spend about two minutes quickly hitting the down and space key to get them all selected. :-/

so you want X, just not gnome?

Why not?
In case we ever get some Zimbabwian prof here, man, I'm gonna give him Debian in his language.

dpkg, savage is also if it locks up when 3d is enabled, try Option "DmaMode" "Vertex" in the Device section of xorg.conf

okay

I don't use any locale LOL

good point.

and I'm not a native Eng speaker

personally I hate localized linux

i've seen a 'select all locales' option
i don't remember where, but probably dpkg-reconfigure locales

I hate locales, another dispersion of work. learn english. i did. LOL

see also dpkg-reconfigure console-data

no, X works fine, gnome-session is spawning 2 nautilus windows (one for each screen, on the root window). I would like to find a way to tell gnome not to do this.

also most translations are crappy or just overdone…

if you've ever seen any Spanish or Italian translation you'll see why I've stuck with Eng for the last 15 years

I hate it too. But it's not up to me to decide for others what language to use.

and emigrated too LOL

yes

Linux is a great chance to learn, you might as well learn techie english as well. no prob with localized docs. but localized os's? no thanks

anyone have a link for the latest ne installer

!d-i

Etch 4.0r0 is now the "Stable" debian release (April 8, 2007) see http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/ for images. Sarge is still available at http://www.debian.org/releases/sarge/debian-installer/ Developers page is http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ .. If you want to make custom install cds, start with d-i. IRC: oftc.net: #debian-boot. Lenny is now the new Testing!

the one on the debian.org site is down

is anybody familiar with OVGuide.com?
i'm trying to get the videos to play, they're imbedded into the page

I was there when one of the servers was compromised. not nice LOL

yep, all the i386 ones are down

using totem-xine

Tried using torrents?

try mozilla-mplayer

down ?

tried it, attempts to play and then stops

there is a xine mozilla plugin also

yes, as in page not found on 3 different networks

also a vlc one

i'll try that

you want the 4.0 or the testing netinst ?

I want the stable release

ftp://ftp.ch.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r0/i386

stable is very stable, even too stable :P

thanks, that opens, which one is the ne version?

the ISO

one that says netinst

look at the site I was given, none say that

ftp://ftp.ch.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r0/i386/bt-cd/debian-40r0-i386-netinst.iso.torrent
sure?

I can't use a netinst with my connection, people in the US will laugh at me but that's the truhth :P

thanks

http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/debian-installer/ — has them listed as the first line

yeah, i looked in there, only 6 items were listed

goodbye-windows.com
works fine

missing

lol

seriously

i can speak from experience that netinst is the way to go

There's also goodbye-microsoft.com

won't delete windows
same site btw

saves downloading 7 or so iso's

maybe in prep for r1 ?

yo

but the ISO directory is empty

oh, it looks like cdimage is down

hey

my main man dude homie bro

it links to r1, actually.

hey abrotman I look before I speak, and the torrent isnt working

oh

I second that one; netinst.

ack!

if you have windows on that box, use the link luke

so it's just a case of cdimage not being working right now

im trying to use an old ibook hard drive for a linux installation. qtparted is telling me the partition changes cannot be committed, that i should unmount the drive. it is not mounted. if i edit the partition table in fdisk and reboot then fdisk sees the changes but qtparted still sees the old weird mac partition layout. help?

bt-cd, bt-dvd, iso-dvd, iso-cd, jidgo-cd, jidgo-dvd are my choises there at the ftp abrotman

i know nothing … does dd'ing it help?

Where can I set the resolution from the gdm/Gnome greeter screen, where I enter my username/password after boot-up is done?

jetscreamer cant, imaging that server, and want the DL done before its done imaging

worth a try, just fill it with 0s?

Sorry, I meant _for_ that screen, not _from_ it.

yeah dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/whatever

http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/ has the full list of mirrors of cdimage.debian.org

but i know 'nothing' about macs

my friends, it was a pleasure talking to you, I'm gonna sleep now

i saw a mac, once

night!

for that, you'd have to modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf or run !drxx (/msg dpkg drxx)

but it looks like cdimage went down while a mirror pulse was going on

stoned, no, xorg.conf only affects the resolution once I'm logged in.

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/debian-cd/4.0_r0/i386/iso-cd/debian-40r0-i386-netinst.iso
^^
too bad it's r0

gdm uses X which calls xorg.conf

http://ftp.funet.fi/pub/linux/mirrors/debian-cdimage/4.0_r1/i386/iso-cd/

the first resolution listed is the one used

ah .. r1 is better!

thas better, that one works, thanks

stoned, I know that's what it supposed to happen, but it just isn't happening.

hey Arrick after you get that installed and updated, will you plz tell me the value of uname -r (the default kernel)

you may be able to find a faster mirror that has R1, but it looks like things got jacked when cdimage went down; don't know what it's status is.

sure, if you remind me

it will stop when of is full?

k thanks Arrick
yeah it will stop when it can't go any further
takes a while

can you double check.. or maybe /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and look for the server command line, ServerCmd i think
I am a kde user :/

jetscreamer got 50 minutes for the image to complete

any reason to write zeros instead of random?

stoned, I don't know what you mean by "double check." The first resolution in xorg.conf is used _after_ I successfully log in, but without a doubt not before.

well for one random might take you 1 day

0 is faster

spar, if you want it secure, 0 is fine, with 4 or more passed

plus you're not trying to hide stuff from the dea

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?

stoned, and my gdm.conf has no uncommented content besides [section] headings.

im running etch

ask #vmware

i did

the new thing for gdm.conf is it's empty

no answer
i googled also
no answer

the default's are in /usr/share/gdm/default.conf or so i think

maybe libc6-dev ?

on OVGuide the error totem gives me is There is no input plugin to handle the location of this movie

?

what are you trying to do, Smerdyakov ?

tried mplayer tried vlc
tried xine

not secure, just blank

jetscreamer, I am trying to set the resolution for the gdm log-in screen.

ah

what you are experiencing is that you have another resolution, the one you want specified in gnome (also the same in kde) which gnome/kde apply AFTER X loads with a display manager. At least this the behaviour I have noticed. to have gdm load with the same resolution, you have to specify it as the first one in xorg.conf

/usr/include/linux

I don't think I'm wrong, but I might be

i never got that one… i can get it to be set 'after' login, but gdm…
you can just take the modes out you don't want .. xorg.conf

thats what I do
I have only one mode

stoned, resolutions only appear in one place in my xorg.conf, and the one I want is first.

1600×1200 times 2 monitors

hey i'm curious, i downlioaded the latest Flash from Adobe for Linux and i can't seem to get past where it asks for the location of mozilla

i use 1280 or 1024 depending on how blind i feel

so remove the ones you don't want

stoned, doing that now.

what is the location of mozilla on Debian?

comment out the original line

etch

make a new modes line and put your desired res there

you want to enable marillat's stuff i think

ok

~/.mozilla maybe…

/usr/lib/browser/plugins/ .. drop the .so in there

wow, dondelelcaro thats still sitting at 0%

thanks

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/debian-cd/4.0_r0/i386/iso-cd/debian-40r0-i386-netinst.iso
^^ ?
is that any better ?
even though it's r0

well, I didn't actually try to download it

lol

nope

if you use r0 i don't care about the uname -r btw
i know that's 2.6.18-4

unknwn, maybe your config is broken. but the headers are there thrust me. check your config, install linux-headers or linux source

Didn't help. :-(

hey, the last one is working, thanks

/usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)

hey man

trust and thrust. i cannot get it. what is what i mean?

you never got any pm?

yeah stoned

http://debian.cites.uiuc.edu/pub/debian-cd/4.0_r1/i386/iso-cd/debian-40r1-i386-netinst.iso .. better ?

what are you doing in debian ?
I thought you were a hardcore windows junkie

I am building a new kernel, I have a K8 64bit processor, running 32 bit Debian. Under "Processor Type and Features" in make menuconfig, should I select K8 or K7 as a processor type? ( I don't need 64 bit support, I don't want to break a fully 32 bit system)

definately, almost 400kbps

i would 'guess' k8 since it's actually a k8, but i do not know

any luck

My temptation as well, but I do not want a 64 bit kernel if it breaks 32 bit in any way. Since all k8 are 64 bit and all k7 are 32.

stoned, no, it didn't change anything.

hey stoned

hi

answer the man…

who?

Kaiten4:

stoned samba gone i alowed net bios

he didn't ask me anything

see if error gone

were you ever talking to me?

he didn't ask me anything either
i don't have a k8
you do

well is he asking about ati?

No, I don't believe I was

no I don't

no, kernel

I have a core 2

oh
nm

no I don't
ok

vore 2?

vore?
I said core dude

stoned should help my error i hope
core 2?

Vore 2 Quo

um

quid pro coreduo

what error.. try not to single me out, I'm not the fountain of all debian knowledge

uthlon

that one i posted yesterday

now thats funny lol
dropping incoming packets?

yeah

I told you I don't know
its some samba related shit

right u gave me things t try

i hear tell a 64 bit kernel works just fine with a 32bit os Kaiten4 , but once again, i do not know

samb shit gone bye bye

they wouldn't have worked anyway, because I suggested things based on a misunderstanding

nomore samba

there's funny stuff to get nvidia going though, but it does go

this is the error i get Please enter the installation path of the Mozilla, SeaMonkey,
or Firefox browser (i.e., /usr/lib/mozilla): /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
dir= /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
Please enter a valid installation path.

yeh

right. My main worry was the ati driver not compiling.

!paster Drevay

put your output on http://channels.debian.net/paste so we can see it. DO NOT paste into the channel.

how do I re-generate availlible?

ok sorry

hi folks

yeah fglrx would probably be funny also like that

hi

no idea

I'm getting a parse error in /var/lib/dpkg/available is it safe to just rm the file and go from there?

fglrx isn't bad, unless you need composite
I do gaming in linux with it, its not bad

It's bad for me

it could be a whole hell of a lot better, but whatever
thats what I get for buying ati

it's the actually installing fglrx i would worry about

Ati mobility accleration =! decent

if you got it installed i imagine it would work fine

ati is amd now no drivers

password" one per line and you run that tool with this file as an argument and it generated the accounts… any hints?

I just want to take my laptop to a windows computer class and show off some xgl

I fact, on debian alone (other distros xgl works like a slug) Xgl+fglrx+3D is not bad
its almost as fast as anything else

this is the error i get when i try to install the flash plugin http://rafb.net/p/4baC6k66.html

xgl isn't in debian .. aiglx is

it's called newusers

I have never been able to install xgl on testing yet, how did you manage it?

i want to use the latest and not the one from marrilot because i'm having problems with that

dondelelcaro, ahh… muchas gracias!

try ~/.mozilla/plugins

though doing that is generally not such a hot idea.

k

wern't they supposed to be open sourcing ati drivers?

dondelelcaro, why?

nope, no dive :s

pffft

*dice

what are you doing? how are you installing the flash plugin?

adobe provided script as far as I can tell

ahh mr gravity … savage sucks for 3d!

W42
bah

!blame gravity

download the tar.gz flash plugin from adobe, and extract it, copy libflash something.so to ~/.mozilla/plugins and you're golden

Sucks how?

hey guys, anybody know why i do a 'ipcrm -m shmid' and it wont remove the shmid ?

OR run the flashplayer installer script in the archive

the shmid has been detached for a long time now, and it still wont remove it

../flashplayerinstaller then it asks for the directory then i enter it and it complains
ok

because you've generally got the plaintext passwords sitting around… 'course, in most computing environments where you'd use newusers, it's not like the passwords are going to be particularly secure anyway.

8192gpu mem isn't enough for 24bit 3d

don't enter a directory just hit enter afaik

and the 16bit seems to have a bug where it locks xorg
at least for me

Oh fun

does anyone know about an nfs(4) kernel bug even in the 2.6.22?

but
the fix is
!savage

http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html, or if it locks up when 3d is enabled, try Option "DmaMode" "Vertex" in the Device section of xorg.conf

check bts?

ah

duh… yeah, will do

tried that already hmm

Sublime
just copy the files to ~/.mozilla/plugins

apparenty my laptop has agp2x also, but xorg was putting it into 1x , until i used the agpspeed directive in xorg.conf

the .so file and the .xpm file

yay

hi, whats the meaning of RC1 ?

release candidate 1

Is a preemptive kernel good for a regular gnome workstation?

desktop yes

stoned, ooh thanks

desktop/workstation yes

what is a preemptive kernel?

ie:movies, firefox, quake

google/wikipedia it

ok

dondelelcaro, I am aware that the passwords are in a plaintext and that is a good thing as this file must be human readable. For sure, after using this file it is moved away the box, I keep a secured copy and the costumer keeps a copy on a CD with other sensible data like company e-mail passwords, accounts etc. and this CD is kept in a vault / safe / set in concrete

uh…… something about being able to kill oopies or something i forget
it's in the kernel docs though
err oopsieses

ok

well, the point really was that for customer stuff, you'd actually want the users to imediately change their passwords
such things shouldn't be kept at all

dondelelcaro, no sorry… in this case it is a policy thing, in general you are right

ok thanks guys later, must go home

"the boss wants it that way"

hmm, nothing in the debian bts… on 2.6.20.4 I get oops when I shut down a lot, sometimes while I work. On 2.6.22 it oops a lot
google finds some stuff from feb. 2007, but I'd assume that's fixed already, so I'm not sure

dunno man

crap, it's pretty annoying. Thanks anyways

yep
I like yngwie malmsteen

yeah, in those situatations, I generally require whoever is employing me to direct me to do that sort of thing in writing

I've noticed that debian testing boots very swiftly now, why is this?

that generally clues them in that it's not a particularly good idea.

I'm on sid, I think its even smoother

dondelelcaro, root / Administrator is "god" anyway, so there is no real point in letting the users change their own passwords to prevent anything. Sad to say but in this case the costumer wants it exactly that way (boss wants to be able to log in wherever and with whom account he wants to whatever service.

debian is just soo amazing, you know

And is there anything I need to set in my new kernel to keep it this way?

yeah, but he can always do that using the root account

he could su user anytime

dondelelcaro, _very good_ point, I almost forgot that… I wwill add that to the policy (the thing about how this is all managed and that boss wants it that way).
dondelelcaro, no, he can't he's the dumbed user you can imagine
dumbest even

yeah, figured as much… that's why I usually want them to specifically direct me

dondelelcaro, he want's to have all the power, but he is to dumb to know how to use that power
dondelelcaro, yeah… we discussed that issue hours… I just forgot to write all down and let it sign by the boss… I will do that, thanks for that hint

is there a way to find files not in packages?
not in installed packages, i mean

locate, find

!search

to find factoids containing thing. see http://wiki.debian.org/WhereIsIt

pdo
!pdo

http://packages.debian.org/ - here you can search for debian packages and their contents. Pretty Damned Obvious, isn't it?, or http://people.debian.org/, in some contexts. Maybe even http://planet.debian.org/

i mean, scan the system for files not in installed packages

Hm. This is odd. approx seems to prefer to keep its own cache instead of using /var/cache/apt/archives

oh, you want something like cruft

why doesn't linux-image refer to the full kernel version anymore? It only say 2.6.22, does that mean that it's not any of 2.6.22.x?

+1

apt-cache search linux-image-2.6.22
there is linux-source-2.6.22 , but the images have more..-whatever
2.6.21-2-686

;-) I'm just surprised, because both testing and unstable only have 2.6.22/.21, but there's already .x of both out for a while

et al
2.6.22-1-k7 on the desktop/sid
know which is a metapackage btw
don't be confused by imitations

yeah, but 2.6.22.5 is out

you won't see the updates reflected in uname -r

why not? So how do I know what updates the debian kernel is based on then?

i really don't understand why not, but i've watched the progression of the methods the kernel image hosting maintainer has done

hmm, but how do I know now if I should try 2.6.22.5? I like the debian kernels, but I need to get rid of my nfs4 oops…

you get a base model, and the optional upgrades are applied, but it stays the same name (see i can't explain it but i know what i'm talking about :/)
just try it
don't uninstall your old one

hehe, obviously
I understand what you are saying about the version numbers, but I seriously don't understand why they do it that way - what would be the advantage?? Anyways, thanks for the info

no one here?

hmm

look inside linux-patch-debian-2.6.22
(as far as I can see currently it is based on 2.6.22.1

are you talking about a linux-image-2.6.22-5 or the source from kernel.org

I have linux-image-2.6.22-1 from debian installed, and I was trying to find out if 2.6.22.5 from kernel.org is newer or not

ahh
yes it is
i thought you meant it's in debian atm
yes the -5 is newer

what do you need from 2.6.22.5 (anything in particular)

..5

him say nfsv4 borked
iirc

I get a kernel oops when i shutdown, sometimes when the system is up

tainted kernel ?

nvidia, but that's it afaik

that would be a taint iirc

yeah, I know, but I need 3d

reproduce it without nvidia

what he said
i personally don't think that's why though

hmm, I haven't tried that. I'll see, it's not 100% reproducible, about 50% of times when I shut down it works fine, the others it oops
I don't see how nvidia has anything to do with nfs though

2.6.22.5 though

I can post the syslog message of the oops, just mentions nfs stuff

how do I tar a whole directory system

I don't know of a userspace nfsv4 server

aren't there 2 diff kinds of nfs? i forget been a year
ah
is that v3 then?

there is one that is v3 and one that is v2

no, v4… I thought only server is in user or kernel mode, right? Or is it the client also?

guys, need some help. any pcmcia cards / brands that KNOWN to work with the kernel? (that have OSS drivers basically)

nice specificness

jetscreamer, im in the market for one. i dont really know how to be specific.

what type ? (scsi / network ?/ wireless ? / soundcard ?)

the mount is in fstab, so I'm assuming it gets umount'ed…

oh crap
sorry, i meant pcmcia wireless. :/ i apologize
id like one that worked ootb with deb, that would be awesome

madwifi supported card would probably work the best but its in non-free

h3sp4wn, so ill need to install fw? are linksys cards madwifi supported?

Depends on which
!madwifi

madwifi is, like, a driver for wireless devices with an Atheros chipset. More information can be found at http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/Distro/Debian. #madwifi. To install madwifi drivers built against Debian stock kernels, ask me about madwifi-install.

I use one of these - http://www.ubnt.com/products_src.php4
(they are quite expensive but better than anything else I ever used)

i know nothing. i seem to dimly remember someting ungood about something like that, umount them first… no idea.

!madwifi-install

i heard madwifi-install is ask me about non-free, then as root: "apt-get update ; apt-get install module-assistant ; m-a prepare ; m-a a-i madwifi". You should now have madwifi installed. Note: Atheros = ath0, NOT eth0.

but that was v3 apparently

!non-free

non-free is always "evil". It has its place in the world, but most Debianistas would rather not use it. Any software not meeting this definition: http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines is in there . See #debian-nonfree and http://nonfree.alioth.debian.org/, or if you MUST, add 'contrib non-free' to the end of a sources.list line, or http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/categories.html Also ask me about vrms

msg the bot

h3sp4wn, is that available on any canadian order sites? or only from the manufacturer's site?

i just setup madwifi on debian for the first time the other day, amazingly easy once i did it the debian way

no clue

ndiswrapper was amazingly easy/simple also :o
it was that or wep only

thanks for the help… I guess I'll try out a newer kernel and see if that helps. I don't know how to read kernel oops call traces well enough to really decide if other reports on the net are the same as mine

there are madwifi footnotes, like a certain .c file has to be included, etc, for some cards. im assuming these are all doable via patches?

try an older kernel also maybe
2.6.18-4 maybe

I'v been running 2.6.20.4 for a long time, and didn't have problems before. But I guess that's a point, I'll see. I had been out of town and updated both server (testing) and client (unstable) and then the problems started

hell, all , how to install debian etch with colinux, i followed "http://colinux.wikia.com/wiki/InstallDebianEtchFromIso", i got wrong.

so what's the best pptp server to be installing on my latest brand new debian server?

isn't there only one ?

(brand new = formatted drive, not new hardware =( )
I don't know, that's why I'm asking

apt-cache search pptp

poptop is the one and only?

i want to know how to install debian with colinux vm step by step ?

ask them
i don't even have that one

AFAIC that should be documented by colinux. Or /msg dpkg d-i

is there any document?

are there any wifi pcmcia card models that dont require any 3rd party firmware? (that will basically work ootb with debian, the installer will pick it up during install etc)

poptop ?
yes

You quite done yet?

abrotman, like?

orinoco based cards

Strong second on orinoco.

karsten, abrotman, googling. are there any cards off the top of your head that use this chipste?

yeah .. old ones

look on linuxwireless.org or whatever
!wireless

for Linksys WPC11 or Netgear WG111v2.

For newer hardware, the Intel onboard chipsets work well. I've got the Intel Wireless 2200GB, uses ipw2200
!tell lastnode about ipw2200

karsten, i cant seem to find a pcmcia of ipw. i used to have it on my old thinkpad too, i loved the ipw2200

still needs firmware iirc

karsten, the ipw series requires firmware, right?

Yeah, I think it's onboard only, and yeah you need firmware, that's what dpkg just told you about.

there aren't intel pcmcia cards

onboard wifi

he asked for pcmcia

oh ok
:/

For orinoco, your best bet is to find an old PCMCIA card, usually ebay, craigslist

using the debian 2.6.18-5-k7 kernel, & somewhere I read that /usr/src/linux should soft-link to linux-headers-2.6.18-5-k7. if I compile the 2.6.22 kernel, will it suffice to link /usr/src/linux to the kernel source?

you can make a linux-headers .deb also if that makes you more comfortable

Small issue. I have linux-image-2.6.18-5-486 installed on my AMD Sempron machine with 1gig of RAM. I am not seeing the full gig, should I be using the 686 image or the k7 image? TIA

clearly they were professor accounts

abrotman, lol

use the -k7

That is what I thought, but did not see anything above athlons listed in description. Thank you

!k7

methinks k7 is the generic model name for the series of AMD i386-compatible processors which begins with the "Athlon" and also includes the "Duron", "Thunderbird", "Sempron" and "Athlon XP" processors. It does not include the AMD64, X2, FX, Opteron (k8) family or the older K5 or K6 chips.

I appreciate the help. thank you all

that's kind of misleading .. the k7 kernel will work on those last few listed

this machine i'm currently on is testing

that is what I thought, thank you all again. have a good night

abrotman, with X?

guys half my internet stopped working

yes
half?

yeah
umm
I believe it to be packet filter, stopped a lot of packets from coming in
like I can ping google

Kaiten4, half? or half of your entire network

but not aim or slashdot
let me give you an example
I'd love to give you an example but pastebin isn't loading…
ok here's some one liners

!paste

Please do not paste anything at all to this channel. Instead, use: http://channels.debian.net/paste/ or http://rafb.net/paste/ or http://picpaste.com for pics.

Luckily one of those worked
http://rafb.net/p/ZCF5LZ24.html
basicly I need to know how to disable packet filter, it just started doing this out of the blue.
I would "just fucking google it" but google and irc seem to be the only things working

that's not on by default

Is anyone here? did I lose all the internets?

Kaiten4, do you have iptables installed?

did you mess with iptables at all ?
maybe it's your ISP?

no sirs

could it be your ISPs dns

after a while using amule my fat partition goes read only. Why?

if you didn't mess with iptables .. ti's not your debian install doing that

I installed dhclient3
the only network related program

doesn't matter

Kaiten4, can you do a traceroute on that particular sites thats droppign

I've reseted my router and modem

dropping*

ok

try to check where does it drop those packets

hello honorables

superplex

It took a half second to leave my router.. I think I'm starting to see the problem

Kaiten4, ok start from there

here is the trace http://rafb.net/p/Nv5hqd18.html

after the router. it should jump somewhere on your ISPs backbone

mtr aol.com

looks filtered to me

clearer output
abrotman, after the routers hop is should jump over to the ISP

Hi

http://rafb.net/p/Nv5hqd18.html

aol.com is loading now
still no aim

Alright, my totem movie viewer can decode .m4a's but not rythmbox.
I have recently gotten a LOT of new decoders.
I was getting the error about something like "the GStream plug-in could not decode M4A"
But, after a lot of decoders, I now have the error "GStreamer could not find the decoder for MP3"

Kaiten4, the one you pasted is still from traceroute

gstreamer sucks

would u guys help with something?… I have the old nvidiafb module on my kernel… Im trying to install the new one, but I cant to unintall the old (even with modconf)

slashdot http://rafb.net/p/pxK0AC42.html

gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 - Fluendo mp3 decoder GStreamer plugin

hey

Thanks.
I'll check.

you don't want to use nvidiafb unless it's a really old nvidia

does look my isp took a shit

edit /etc/modules and comment it out
then reboot
if modprobe -r nvidiafb doesn't work

jetx, tnx, it didnt work

looks like an ISP problem your packet loss are on the 7th hops

Shit maybe they're on to me

jetx, is loading anyway.

you guys don't know me

Everything went smoothly on my image shift to k7, thank you all again. Have a good night

did you edit /etc/modules ?

Kaiten4, what do you mean we dont know you

what vidcard/gpu

exactly

Are you talking to me?

not really

nvidia 5200

alright.

Uhh anyways, I hate to ask, I was looking this up when my internet crapped out, what's the command to have kernel-package compile a kernel with an initrd(or whatever?)?

you don't want nvidiafb. edit /etc/modules and comment it out.

So I can compile my new kernel now and hope my internet works tomorrow

then reboot

jetx, I did that… and is loading

and another thing

jetx, even in the blacklist.

nvidiafb, or nvidia

nvidiafb

good evening mister abrotman

and nvida in modules, but doesnt work cuz there is another (first)

hi

But, they wierd thing is, is they play in totem.
Any one know if it could just be rythmbox?

apt-cache search gstreamer mp3

thanks, I'll look

(echo $password; echo $password ) | smbpasswd -s -a $user - this does work (add a $user with $password to the samba database, I have a file with those two variables seperated by colons, nearly passwd-style and I don't get it how to let this thing parse that file to add all the users in that file… any hints?

jetx, do u know how to remove from kernel? or I need to compile again (Im newbie sorry)

ohhhh
you compiled it in
recompile
use a stock kernel

exactly.. that's the problem

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=41845

I understand most of kernel package, what is the flag to make an initrd? Please?

not .20 or .21
make-kpkg –initrd kernel_image

Damn, I clicked that link thinking I would read it
thank you

jetx, I miss it installing :p
jetx, my problem is removing from kernel (I think)… I guess I should re-compile the kernel right?

right
looks like you compiled it in
hang on

what does modules_image do?

In My Ubuntu 7.04 machine i am not abel to open the website http://meetings-archive.debian.net/ using firefox what could be the problem

Yeah, that didn't work.

jetx, cool man!, tnx a lot!

maybe it's just rythmbox?

ask #ubuntu
try quod libet

Anyone know of a program that is like rythmbox (links all your music to a menu)?
