hi im trying to install fedora 7 via ftp in a vm through remote desktop - got to the starting install process

i think it does

hm..k

cuz after i closed terminals, i just hit up cursor and it gave me the commands i typed earlier

coolness

well monkee__ … the zd1211 does work well but still looking for yours

yalright

how do i reinstall an rpm?
just the same as the first time? or do i need a different parameter?

rpm -Uvh filename

ta

i think that does something with yum
and enables it to update or something like that

ah, k
uninstall an rpm?

now that i do not know

darn :P

~/.bash_history stores your last commands, upto 500 by default i think

i just started using linux today

-e

i got a bug kb but it doesn't seem to matter

monkee__, so far all Ive found is that the datel wifimax is used with the psp 2 for internet connections through a windows style daemon

yep

How do I change the $PATH variable?

smeggin

thats what i used it for, well not for a psp, but for my ds

ah well

monkee__, I suggest you copy the driver files and use either ndiswrapper or madwifi to extract the firmware and use it in fedora
you will need more help then I can give
sorry

thats ok
atleast u got me started on something

monkee__, do you have the zd1211 module loaded?

i dont really know
is the command lsmod?

yes

ah it isnt loaded
o wait it is

do you have yumex?

figure it out yet??

zd1211rw_mac80211 47941 0
mac80211 147657 2 rc80211_simple,zd1211rw_mac80211
cfg80211 13257 1 mac80211
that should be it
and what is yumex

sort of, apparently the .run you download is supposed to rename a bunch of mesa crap

What does 'PATH=/usr/local/bin:~/bin:$PATH' do?

lemme look it up

monkee__, use rafb.net dont paste that much output in here

yeah, you don't really wanna install the .run file that comes straight from nvidia, bad things happen

not a good thing

yeah, i know

yumex is a graphical front end for yum

yea
i just found that
and downloaded it
it should work on fedora 7 right?
even tho its for core 4

i just wish i could find out the manual way to rename the mesa libraries

monkee__, it should say zd1211-firmware so yum install that
just in case… if its already loaded monkee__ it will say nothing to do

"nothing to do?" A: When yum reports "nothing to do" what it's really saying is that the "package may already be installed" (or it doesn't exist), so there's nothing for it to do. (ask directly: rpm -q package).

i remember my zd1211 wireless device

lol zcat ease up on your script

you might be able to get the src rpm for the livna nvidia drivers, and peruse through it and see how it works…

oh man

the livna ones apparently don't clean up the libs

i have to do this make stuf
lol

Yes, that's why I suggested letting the installer fix your libraries.

the .run program DOES Do that, but i don't want to use it for other reasons

if you at any tim ran the installer from nvidia, you won't be able to go back and use the rpm. the installer from nvidia does bad things to the system

yeah, i don't want to use it
i just wish i knew what it does with the mesa libs

primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 1.3 MB 00:00
http://ftp.fi.muni.cz/pub/linux/fedora/linux/extras/5/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match check
all mirrors

fc5 is no longer supported… not surprising that some mirrors (or all of them) are messed up.

alright i ran the make for yumex
it should be installed right?

even microsoft support longer they systems

make?

well i downloaded yumex
and untarred it

make? you should just 'yum install yumex'

o.O
hahahahaha
im so n00b

monkee__, you need to use yum and not tarballs
ok?

fedora is a fast moving distro… if you want longer support, look to centos or rhel, or ubuntu lts.

w000000000t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how good am I!!!

hm
why not use tarballs

jacekowski, apparently you haven't read up on the Fedora lifecycle.

do you know how to open up a terminal in su - monkee__ ?

hello?

yea

how good am i?

It is also possible that your checksum. You may be able to fix this with 'yum clean all'

is it me or does google earth for linux host blow chunks?

because there is no easy way to query whats installed, un-install something, upgrade cleanly, or otherwise manage your system.

Missing Dependency: pcre = 6.3-1.2.1 is needed by package pcre-devel

well then do that and then type yum install zd1211-firmware

it said nothing to do

"nothing to do?" A: When yum reports "nothing to do" what it's really saying is that the "package may already be installed" (or it doesn't exist), so there's nothing for it to do. (ask directly: rpm -q package).

but i got yumex installed
so wait, if i download a tarball
i just run yum install file?

thats great monkee__ but again do what I asked you to do ok?
bthats great monkee__ but again do what I asked you to do ok?/b
and yes

kk

for the last time - HOW GOOD AM I

Existing lock /var/run/yum.pid: another copy is running as pid 8301. Aborting.

yeah yeah Psytonic yer just great

we have no idea…

good

yep it said nothing to do again

i just got freenx working

monkee__, is your updater running or do you have yumex running?

i had yumex running

took me days but its working

i closed it

lol Psytonic well congrats

and then reran yum install zd1211-firmware

ta

whats it doing then?

it still said noth*ng to do

nothing to do means its already there

i fixed it

otherwise what would it say?

we're back to the point where you are going to have to use madwifi or ndiswrapper

thats good!

sorry

might wanna write down how you fixed it for next time now

hm lemme look this stuff up
do i download the windows drivers or something?

i did it an ugly way, i'm sure

you will use the windows drivers yes but extract the firmware etc…

i renamed /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 whcih is mesa and symlinked /usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1 to /usr/lib

hm
this sounds interesting

driver loaded firmware is a bunch of BS

ok now im installing madwifi

well monkee__ good luck

thanks

how can i get ivtv.c and ivtv.h from 2.6.22.5?
just those two files?

from livna? http://fedoramobile.org/fc-wireless/madwifi-yum-livna/

omgzz… i just realized, i was trying to get aircrack for windows, and turns out it was for linux
i just understood this.. like a min ago
omg
hm apparently there are a lot of conflicts
file /lib/modules/2.6.22.4-65.fc7/modules.scsi from install of kernel-2.6.22.4-65.fc7 conflicts with file from package kernel-2.6.22.4-65.fc7
thats just one
theres like quite a few more

what command are you running?

yum install madwifi

so you are following the above link?

which link

from livna? http://fedoramobile.org/fc-wireless/madwifi-yum-livna/

hm that looks complicated

well, suit yourself…

lol
i just started working on linux
like
today
what does the -c switch do after the su command?

man su

please read the /topic here ..
look at all the pages .. help yourself and help us out ..

lol

man is your friend

man?

"not knowing" is ok.. using that as an excuse every 5 min isn't

man pages. just type man and then a command and it'll tell ya good stuff

^manual

ever hear of R

ahhhh that makes so much more sense

i mean, ever hear of RTFM? I think opsec is trying to tell you that in a nice way

nice way
haha
yeah right

the fall of man?
hahah

i wonder if i can get 2.6.22.5 in koji yet

why even type that here.
just go look

it was just something i saw on site

i'm looking, so shut your pie hole

figured if i checked it out here

i'm coming for you.

it might educate me faster

better bring an extra pocket protector
it's a long trip

won't need any..

oh, and some extra retainer cleaning fluid

why? you out?

why no, opsec, i don't use a retainer

then why would you need cleaning fluid for one?

you have to clean those things?

it's for you, you silly rabbit

no wonder mine smells funky

ask opsec

lol I would hope so….

all of my teeth are bionic

oh great, it's in fedora testing
http://www.captain.at/programming/kernel-2.6/
ok, this generally works, but apparently not for ivtv

Are you that guy that posts to fedora-testing every time a commit is maid to linus's tree "Will we see 2.6.23.rc4.git8 in F7?"

I installed dovecot from fedora, and squirrelmail. I can login to the squirrelmail web interface, and send e-mails..but I can't receive anything.

no, it's just recommended that i try 2.6.22.5 for the ivtv fix
for the DMA error.

you're the "yoko ono" of #fedora .. sitting around in the corner singing off key and banging your tambourine ..

i don't understand, please explain

exactly.

When I telnet ip 143, it gives me "* OK Dovecot ready.", so dovecot is running, and the port works

i mean, i think i understand what you are saying, and i think it might be funny, but it's just not coming through clearly
are you familiar with this?
http://www.captain.at/programming/kernel-2.6/
i've done that successfully with some kernel modules, however, it doesn't seem to work for the current ivtv

well glabels still sux…. very poor printing response very iffy guess I'll have to report a bug but not sure what to say

anybody here familiar with svn?

opsec u here?

hi guys !

o noes !!
opsec disappeard again

either of you two familiar with svn?

nope sry

just ask..

im a day old in linux

how do i check something out from an static ip hosting instead of a URL?
as in, it's not available on the web, it's just a repo on a machine at work

svn co http://ip/… ?

nbtstat -A ip
heehehehe

it's not on the web, it's internal
there isn't even apache on this box

internal what?

internal ip

it's an internal devbox

just go with file:// then

man

svn co /path/to/repo

im a go watch scrubs
cuz opsec isnt here
unless he magically appears and is able to help me with my wireless usb card thing

thanks

o
i have a question abou the explorer on fedora 7
when i double click a folder
a new window opens
how can i disable that
and enable it to just open in the same window

monkee__, but harvey birdman atty at law is on!

i looked thru the options
harvey birdman, on which channel?

cartoon network

hm
i gotte check it out

well its almost over now
lol

i was going to watch south park or scrubs
lol
what time zone do u live in
0

http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc2/#nautilus-spatial (should apply to f7 as well)

ah so its called nautilus eh
thanks
hm i did that
why is it still doing it
o.O
oo
i have to logout and back in

"Log out and log in again, and the file manager will be back to the way it used to be."

but i have lots of browsers and stuff open
meh
ill do it later
i can deal with it
man i need to fix my wireless card problem soon
o well
tv time
sam's happy time oh yea

no idea how anyone can like it that way
to get to one particular directory you have to open zillion windows

yea
sucks
but o well
time to go back to sam's happy time

hello!
how do i use rpm command to see where is the installed files of an rpm package?

rpm -ql packagename

ty

primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 1.8 MB 00:01
http://ftp.rhd.ru/pub/fedora/linux/extras/6/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum
fedora 6 is unsupported too?

use yum clean

same

yum clean metadata
did not solve the problem?

yum clean all

mhm work

if you are getting the same error you might need to check what mirrors you are using

yum by default uses mirrorlist.. it takes only one download from desynced mirror to go downhill 8)

guys anyone knows a repository where i could get mplayer with fbdev /fbdev2 and directfb support? for fedora core 6

did you try the packages from Livna?

yes
it doesnt have fb support

then get the src.rpm and rebuild it with said support

i would love to do that but the machine where im deploying it, is kind of slow and it would take several hours to compile
not counting that it uses a flash mass storage device with 512mb of space only so i cant just drop srcs

that's a whole pocketful of excuses
http://livna.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/7/SRPMS/mplayer-1.0-0.80.20070715svn.lvn7.src.rpm

Can someone help me straighten out my $PATH? I think I know what's wrong, but I can't figure out how to fix it.

*sigh*
thanks for ur help opsec

–with directfb:Enable DirectFB support
directly from the spec
and fbdev is a default compile option
so.. i guess yum install mplayer as EvilBob suggested

i installed mplayer from livna using yum install mplayer
it just doesnt have fb on the -vo options

read the spec yourself
it's right there

well i tell u cos im checking it on the screen
also im runing FC6
not 7

try 'mplayer -vo help' and check which vo's are really there

i did that

what's a good PIM program for syncing Dell PDA's?

there's no FB support of any kind

–with directfb:Enable DirectFB support

either it's not compiled at all, or compiled with shared modules, which arent installed, i guess

also fbdev support

opsec !!
can u help me with my wifi usb stick?

if i can..

try "yum list '*mplayer*fb*'"

My $PATH is set to "/usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/lib/ccache:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/home/Jeff/bin" can someone tell me how to put "/bin" after ccache?

apparently it has the zd1215 chip

ccache?

Pogonip, try looking in /etc/profile.d/ for clues..

ID 0ace:1215 ZyDAS

ok
i dont understand the –with directfb part, cos it doesnt appear under -vo help

arang2, opsec looked into how rpm was built

then why i cant get fb support?

Zart; Do you know where the $PATH variable is first set?

Pogonip, there are many places to look for… pam/login/shell all may change it

i found drivers for you
http://zd1211.wiki.sourceforge.net/
apparently uses those

Zart; Isn't there one place to start?

yea but
i dont think i installed them successfully

i don't have the hardware .. i buy things known to work easily in linux

Pogonip, /sbin/init, the very first process in the system already has PATH defined

and i suggest to others to do the same

opsec, doesnt work well for notebooks..

Zart; Thanks that should help.

support hardware vendors that take the time to provide linux support .. open source even better
sure it does
it's called "research"

yeah…

lol thats ok im just a newbie to linux, i had the most stable install of windows xp ( 4.5 yrs ) and it finally started slowing down so i decided to get linux.. little did i know 4.5 yrs ago i was going to do this lol

well.. i suggest a dlink atheros card if you are on a budget
you'll be online wirelessly in about 5 min
or less

well im trying ndiswrapper

hello, and thank-you in advance for your support. I am a former Suse User, so I have some linux knowledge. I have just installed fedora 7 on a pIII w/ 1.5gb ram. I dont have alot of time to research tonight. can someone please tell me where to go to mount my hard drives that were not included in
the install?

mrstiggy, Were they raiserFS disks?
reiserFS even..

http://fedoramobile.org/wireless
there is an ndis howto there

I dont think so. they were ext3 on my suse install. standard eide

hm is .rar supported on linux?

also, look at the cards/chipsets there are howtos for ..
yes
livna has an unrar package

hm
it says couldnt open filename.rar archive is not supported

it integrates into gnome file-roller or .. you can use it from the cli
yes, you'll need to install support
rar is trademarked and copyrighted software

ahh
i getit
so ill have to install support?

can't be included by default in fedora

is there a partioner program like in suse?

dlink… my research on web showed that they like to change hardware in their boxes without warning. so for any given model there are both happy and unsatisfied linux users

does that mean yum install support?

hi

rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm && yum install unrar
that is true of many card manufacturers .. thus "research"

thank you

if you know that model foo_v2 does not have the chipset you want .. but foo_v3 does .. the choice is obvious
this information can always be found out before any purchase
most people never check ..

opsec, i have about a couple of models on sale in local stores. so almost no choice really 8(

they buy some stuff and accept that they're 'stuck with it"

do i have to install something else to mount mdf files?

for wireless i use netgear and sony wireless cards .. and an intel 3945

and i meant exactly that you CANT know which chipset they put into particular release of that model 8\
mdf files are MS Access o.o

yes you can

nah
mds/mdf are alcohol120% files

or iso?

but theyre copyrighted stuff i believe

you take the model and version and put it into google with the keyword "chipset"
very easy to find on most any card

i wonder if linux has a mount thing where it can mount mdf's

what is alcohol120% ?

its a cd emulation software

opsec, and how one can find version without buying damn box?

for windows
creates mds/mdf files

are you seriously asking me that?
there's a little thing called "websites" online .. try it sometime .. maybe you'll find something useful there

hey opsec
is there like a daemon-tools for linux?

i don't know .. i don't know what windows programs do

o.O

i totally avoid windows

monkee__, loopback mount does the same

daemon-tools is cd emulation software

but you can't do that with mds/mdf

hm is loopback mount third party?
o.O

no
it's a mount option
mount -o loop
man mount

k
lemme do some research

opsec, mds/mdf are like iso/cue, but in binary proprietary format

never seen them
took off my pirate patch long long ago

Were you helping me before with VMware? (sorry for asking)

hm apparently i need kommander, p7zip and acetoneISO to use these mdf files

Is there a way to list all of the enviromental variables?

printenv

set

does loopback mount support iso?

Yes; though you may need to specify the filesystem as 'iso9660'.

hm

but only regular isos… not some raw ones
mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop some.iso /mnt

ah k

Ahhhh….stupid hardware went boom during a Rawhide upgrade. I'll spend tomorrow morning reinstalling+upgrading it seems.
On the plus side, widescreen ROCKS…Now it's sleepy time. Yay for 7 AM classes… :P

i got lots of .repo under /etc/yum.repos.d/ how do i know what to remove and what to keep

err….
rpm -qf /etc/yum.repos.d/*
lists rpms for repos there

I have Vino enabled, but it's not opening the ports I need, at least not for external. I have no other computers lanned up to test this on, and I can't access my desktop from my remote location … I've just used Gnome's configuration dialog. Is there some setting I'm missing?

ok
i got atrpms.repo
fedora-*.repo
flash.repo
freshrpms.repo
jpackage.repo

enough

livna-devel.repo and livna.repo
rpmforge.repo
sorry

ENOUGH
you need to reinstall your system if you've performed any yum upgrade with that configuration

hmm

that is a horrible mix of repos
http://fedoraos.org/repositories.html

mixing that with freshrpms/rpmforge is a recipe to shoot myself in the head

ok

anyone familiar with compiling a kernel module more sophisticated than the one mentioned here?
http://www.captain.at/programming/kernel-2.6/

there's a way to just undo anything and fix the repo thing without reinstall?

that's just their microsoft answer

im sorry for upsetting u

he's upset at everyone
they;ve told me to reinstall repeatedly and my system is generally solid as a rock

arang2, use "yum list | grep reponame" to find out which rpm belong to unneeded repos, then "yum remove" those

i'm not upset .. but don't paste in here or type numerous 1 word comments
use rafb.net/paste or dpaste.com
it's not our fault if everyone who is a regular here or works on fedora told you to reinstall and you laugh at our advice.

it's your fault you're clueless and any time i've had a minor problem you've suggested that and i've fixed it far more easily

when 6-7 people are telling you the same thing .. there's a damn good reason

it's also you're fault you're a condescending doofus

perhaps you'll never learn

ARfdee, You are gaurenteed to end up with a broken system at some point when using ATrpms.

apparently not, because you said the only way i could fix my nvidia problem the other day was to reinstall everything
and it ended up being an issue with beryl
really, i've used atrpms with two systems for several years

ARfdee, You don't seem to be a 2 year veteran

thanks

ARfdee, I mean it less complimentary

perhaps experienced people just reinstall their system every time they have a problem
oh wait, that's windows users.
and their tech support suggestions.
i see, so because i don't have the problems you are describing i definitely should have, it's a sign of my inexperience.
yeah, that makes sense.
if you guys don't know the answer to something, just admit it, don't tell everyone to format and reinstall

what issues are you having ARfdee ?

none other than the ivtv driver being broken in this kernel release.

which release? change kernels

but they say it may be fixed in 2.6.22.5

ARfdee, I have been frequenting #fedora for at least 3 years. I have seen the problems ATrpms have caused over and over. A whole lot more that one person ( You ) and your 2 machines .

i don't know what to tell you, i'm just saying i don't have those problems.

ARfdee, Luck.

or, you could be wrong.

pure luck… given their habit of replacing core packages

you know, i was in some other channel and i was told all the same things… about livna
so i disabled livna a while back.

ARfdee, Ok lets make a deal. You hang in here and dedicate yourself to assisting every ATrpms 'victim' from now on.

and then i get told it's atrpms here.

or perhaps you don't understand the details of your system and if something "works" regardless of how or what it overwrites .. then we're just stupid experienced people.

yeah, i really don't understand that my system isn't working
i'm really not doing what i think i'm doing, too

you don't even comprehend what i wrote .. based on your reply

in fact, i'm not even in #fedora right now.
no, i just think, as i've said before, you're a condescending doofus that beats up on newbies to make yourself feel better.

repos like livna and jpackage has additional packages. freshrpms/atrpms clash with core ones… personally i'd like to avoid that
(you may go on with your flamefest ;D)

maybe you didn't get nursed long enough when you were young, had too many swirlies in school, i dunno.
and as you can see, every time i see you beating up on some newbie i'm happy to explain you to them.
"don't worry, he's just a condescending doofus"

no ARfdee, you have no idea. you're a moron who won't take advice of people with more experience than yourself .. and it's pointless to continue with you .. you'll be out soon enough

right, because i'm not really even using linux right now.
in fact, i'm in windows, and i've never even used linux.

ARfdee, You're going off a bit..

if you actually are interested in helping people, you should follow ivazquez's example. he does not give hand outs but helps people.

ARfdee, Lets ends this please.

and he doesn't treat them like trash in order to make himself feel better.
but, that's only if you're interested in helping people.

ARfdee, You're spamming the channel now. Please.

you spammed the channel with the nonsense about being the most experienced linux user ever.

%

can someone help me install unshield?

if it's not a fedora product (i.e. not included in fedora or livna) .. use ##linux

what do u mean

i mean we support fedora packages, livna packages .. and subsequent configuration/installation
is unshield available in a fedora or livna repo?

dont think so

then /j ##linux

ya i did

lots more people there to help with that
btw, i really don't recommend instaling too many source packages in fedora or depending on that as an install method
fedora is a package managed system .. that will eventually break things if it becomes a habit

im trying to make a raid1 with 3 drives on a 3ware 9500s - is this possible?

ah
turns out unshield is in the fedora repo

or i could deal with a 2drive raid1 if i could periodicly copy to a 3rd drive on the fly

yum install unshield

yep
did that

is that some hardware?

yes 3ware 9500s is a hardware raid controller

i'm sure the users manual has information on what raid configurations it supports

kronos003, I beleive you can have RAID1 2 drives plus one spare

im trying for a hot copy of sorts

kronos003, Been a while since I have used them though
kronos003, Yeh it should do that.

id love it to occur in t he hardware but ill settle for software as long as the image clones itself

just remeber raid1 != backup. if you get filesystem corruption raid1 with faithfully duplcate it

im looking for theoretical 0 downtime
im planning on periodicly rotating out the third drive

0 downtime would be an identically mirrored system

kronos003, Heh. You will need more than one 3ware RAID card for that to be a reality..
0 downtime I mean.

ok make that 0 downtime due to storage media failure

you'd still have downtime if it failed
unless you had 2 or more mirrored systems

i got my idea from norton gost's on the fly drive image hosting backup - my thought is what if i could make the raid controller do it for me? then i could do minimal degradation as the system rebuilds the extra drive and could have it
happen when noone is around
and i wouldnt have to put up with buggy software that eats system resources like theyre goin outa style

can someone please tell me how to mount my ext3 partionions in fedora 7?

opsec, He was messaging me too.

mount -t ext3 /dev/device /mnt/wherever

thanks opsec… how do I get a listing of my /dev names?

following me into every channel
fdisk -l

opsec, Gets boring after a while doesn't it??

yep

huh… every time I fdisk, it says it does'nt exist :/

i have to wonder.. who is really the kid with nothing better to do?
su –login

I am logged in as root

login as i suggested

suse user till about 3 hours ago
thanks

mrstiggy, Did you use 'su -' to log in or su on it's own?

command not found

"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su –login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.

read that please

so my idea about putting system backup in the hands of the raid controller - doable you think?
or should i stick to mondo

kronos003, Entirely doable. But it will not be the right 'backup' solution.

not as a backup
but a nice idea
better than nothing for sure

even with periodic rotation of the third drive?

as I said raid != backup

kronos003, Ah as in removed from the machine? That will work.

basicly a periodic rebuild on a new drive

much thanks for the help opsec…. one more hurdle…/dev/sdc1 is not a valid block device

kronos003, Tape is cheaper though

hi all

i personally bought 2 identical computers .. one rsyncs to the other

im gonna try to get this ironed out and time permitting my box will finnally see FC7 in a week or 2

provide the output of fdisk -l .. to: dpaste.com
then give me the link

I'm getting the following error 'rpmdb failed open' when doing anything with yum. Any ideas on how to fix it? the full error is here: http://pastebin.com/d7425f6b

I got it … thanks all for your help

i think i know what ill do if i win the lottery - 2 42U racks full of 1U quad cpu servers configured as a beowulf cluster
that should do iit

ps aux | grep -E "(rpm|yum)"

kronos003, with software raid it's easy to do a 'split mirror' like that where you sync to an extra drive then remove it from the array, but doing a full image like that is stressful compared to incremental backups.

suse no?

is zcat a bot?

c'mon
no

there was a process which had been running for like a week (yum-updated or something like that)

kronos003, yes. it took my AI 2 minutes to formulate a response.

I killed it

just wondered
lol

chkconfig yum-updatesd off && service yum-updatesd stop

you looked like you were responding to a irc bot query a few mins bak when you were explaining root

try not to kill yum processes unless there is really no other option
he was

already tried stopping the service first
anyhow, I did that already
still getting that error

it is a trigger for the most common linux/unix error of all time

I switched to fedora to get away from the bloatware of suse

rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db* && rpm -vv –rebuilddb
try that

anybody here look at vista?

off topic

kronos I have

i think well be seeing a lot of new recruits around here

and I guess its off topic so I will shut up

kronos003, I looked at my father's install. Then showed in Compiz/Beryl and wobbly windows.

you don't have to "shut up".. just keep the talk revolving arouhnd fedora

s/in/him

sorry about OT - was only using that to point out the superiority of Fc

man
now i cant get ndiswrapper to work

thanks opsec that worked perfect

can someone help me with ndiswrapper?

ive been taking junkers and setting up knoppix in RO mode so newbies can play without worrying that theyll nuke the box
whats your issue

ok…updates install.. gotta reboot… thanks for the help

whats the problem monkee

no worries

monkee????

Willbert, monkee__ —-

sry
i was trying something
well

oh well i guess hell let us know what he wants when hes ready

i was getting drivers for my usb wifi stick
got them

i see

but first time i installed wrong drivers with ndiswrapper
now
when i run ndiswrapper -i ZD1211BU.INF
i get command not found

"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su –login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.

heh

lol

monkee__, Remember that one?

yea im in root
thing is
i did it once
now i cant do it anymore
:P

monkee__, Meh. Read the FAQ.

?

monkee__, How did you become root?

su -login

monkee__, It's –login

yea something like that
[root@localhost Desktop]# ndiswrapper -i ZD1211BU.INF
ndiswrapper: command not found

monkee__, echo $PATH do you see /sbin/ /usr/sbin in there?

su -
do it

yep i see it

monkee__, Did you remove ndiswrapper?

nope

monkee__, rpm -qa \*ndis\*

nope
ndiswrapper-1.46-1.lvn7
kmod-ndiswrapper-1.46-1.2.6.22.4_65.fc7

woot, rpm finally can do regexps on -qa

yep i still get command n0t found

monkee__, Ok.. type which ndiswrapper

/usr/bin/which: no ndiswrapper in (/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/home/monkee/bin)

monkee__, You fibbed. There is no sbin in your path.

?

Oh hangon there is..

lol
+me

monkee__, You only have /usr/kerberos/sbin . Your root PATH has been mangled.

test1 sorta works

nono

cant get this 3ware card to make 3 drive raid1s for some reason

i have /usr/sbin too

monkee__, Ok. So why does which not look in /usr/sbin or /sbin ?

i dunno
i just went to /usr/sbin in nautilus right now

And why is it looking in /home/monkey when you are supposed to have root's PATH ?

and i see ndiswrapper

monkee__, type exit

k

monkee__, how many ways must someone say "su -", not "su"?

monkee__, use su - and then echo $PATH

/usr/bin/which: no idontexist in (/usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/opt/jre/bin:/usr/lib/ccache:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/NX/bin:/root/bin)

thanks again for all the support tonight
how do I list what job IDs are running so I can kill xserver to install my video driver?

done tjat
[root@localhost ~]# echo $PATH
/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin

mrstiggy, No need for that .. fedorasolved.org should provide a way to install the drivers.
monkee__, Hooray

so now the ndiswrapper should work?

monkee__, which ndiswrapper

/usr/sbin/ndiswrapper

Great.

so it works? i think

monkee__, So compare what you see _now_ to what you were seeing before..
monkee__, The difference was you ran su - And not su or su -login

ah i see

monkee__, su - is functionally the same as su –login
monkee__, Mystery solved. Carry on.

but i still cant use ndiswrapper
wtf
[root@localhost ~]# ndiswrapper -i ZD1211BU.INF
installing zd1211bu …
couldn't open ZD1211BU.INF: No such file or directory at /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper line 217.

monkee__, Right. Try all lowercase?

no its all uppercase

monkee__, It must be refering to line 217 in the inf file..

hm now it says its already installed

monkee__, 2 files needs IIRC the inf and the actual driver.. ?

yep
the driver is inthere
right with the file

fedora is waaaaaaaayyyy diff then suse

man i give up on this
ill be back tomorrow

Could anybody help me debug what I did wrong in using the BIND configuration GUI to set up a DNS server? I created a new Internet Forward Zone and set it's name to my url (foo.com). Then I added two type A fowards with foo.com to an IP and www.foo.com to an IP. I also opened port 53 and all
that jazz, but I can't figure out why it's not working. Any ideas? ;D

bind config gui?
del bind config gui

Ya. There's a GUI for setting it up

what is it
i use webmin for all my stuf

It's a GUI front end that writes teh named.conf config files for you and gives you a user interface to help set them up

yeah, the system-config-bind.

Yep

del is the site on the same box as the dns server

yes
If by site you mean webserver, then yes

are you more or less seting up a website?
all aspects of which contained on one box

Yep. I bought a domain to toy around with. I'm trying to set up DNS and apache
For now, yep
DNS and apache on the same box

erk.
de1, Best idea is to do it by hand. Yeh I know it's a steep learning curve.. But the GUI tool tends to screw up a bit.

i agree

Hmm. Otay

ive had the best hosting luck with webmin myself

Would you recommend webmin?
Ah ok

del yes
get webmin
then virtualmin gpl edition

Ok I'll go do that now

heres the fun part

?

the ip that your audience needs to goto - is that the ip issigned to the box or is it the ip on your router

i dont see how webmin will help.

IP of the box, not the router

it will make it easy for him to set his stuff up without actually having to read the book on bind

I don't mind reading it
I'd just like a working example to toy with first

del so your machine has a public ip?

Yes

hey all

not that it matters - my box doesnt have a public ip but since its the dns seerver for the localnet and the internet i have to have 2 zones for each site

Alright kronos003, webmin is installed

now get virtualmin

http://www.virtualmin.com/?
http://www.virtualmin.com/ ?

i've got a quick question if anyone may be able to help me…I've just installed FC7 on a notebook and im trying to get the ati drivers to work

its a modual you can get on the webmin site or at least there is a link to it
module

when i try to install the rpm, it says "libexpat.so.something needed by fglrx"

got it, dling now

any idea what that means?

sleep deprivation starting to show

anyone have an idea about the error i've got there?

del if you already know the underlying frameworks - webmin+virtualmin is rediculously easy

is there a way to switch the default display from the vga output to the laptop's LCD?

sorry man - ive got no idea - maybe someone else does

kk it's installed now. I just used the two rpm's

good - recent rpms from trustworthy repos?

sourceforge and direct from the webmin site
for webmin and virtualmin, respectively

what version of webmin you running

1.360

do you know how to login or do you want tourist treatment

I'm already logged in

good
first thing

Trying to figure out how it's running, though
ps -e | grep web pulls up nothing

module updates - make sure you have all the patches
its a webpage on port 10000
http://localhost:10000

Yep I'm logged in at http://myserver:10000/
yep

libexpat.so is provided by expat-devel, but the last time that I checked the fglrx I needed to downgrade the X server to make it work, I'm happy now with the radeon driver

Where can I see the module versions and/or update them, etc?

across the top click the webmin button next to system

I assume everyones up to date, I pulled the most recent stuff off the website

not always

Webmin configuration?

click webmin configuration
webmin modules

Hmm. I have to download and install usermin

im lost. is there a walkthrough or guide somewhere that will show me how to get the ati drivers working?

One second

del usermin not needed

i dont even need the ati drivers…just to change the default monitor from the VGA out on my notebook to its built in screen

I clicked usermin configuration instead of webmin
I'm silly

del upgrade webmin
del "update modules" tab

Gimme a second kronos003, things arent in alphabetical order, I'm looking

check update noncore modules uncheck "only show…"

Thanks so much for helping me with this
It's updating now

del noworries

What is this written in? The server? Perl?

dunno - i think there are perl partsw

Ok a few modules were updated and a few were already up to date

good
at the top click servers
virtualmin

Virtualmin Virtual Servers (GPL)?

yes

kk

maybe http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/ati-yum-livna for fglrx, or check the radeon howto

Virtualmin's configuration has not been checked since it was last updated. Click the button below to verify it now.

do it

Should I do that?
kk

been a long time since ive set up a new install

Hmm ok. Let's see here

hey guys

THANK YOU

can anyone help me with alsa?

Virtualmin is configured to setup DNS zones, but this system is not setup to use itself as a DNS server. Either add 127.0.0.1 to the list of DNS servers, or turn off the BIND feature on the module config page.

what do you need

I'll go add 127.0.0.1 to the list of DNS servers? Though I thought it was already there…

i cant get my 5.1 speakers to work
the main speakers and sub work
but the left and ruight dont do anythin

del the bind dns server host config in webmin is fairly reliable
to my memory its more reliable than system-config-bind

i tried each of the configurations on teh alsa wiki but no joy

odd

i know
they worked in ubuntu
:/

default also config as shipped with the os?

What do you mean by that? Should I add 127.0.0.1 to the DNS server's list?

yea

del yes

kk

tahts why i started tryin different configs

im saying the webmin way of doing it is better than the redhat utility way

Ah ok. This tool looks amazing. Can't believe I've never heard of it before. I should donate to the project

if virtualmin wants to do it itself then cool but other wise go to the bind setup in webmin
i do all my work there these days and rarely have to touch code directly anymore

any ideas?

I tried fixing the problem but it didn't go away. I'm now using the BIND DNS Server setup under Servers

odd what card?
del yea that should work - if not then maybe your not doing it right?

C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6]

doesnt seem special - it should just work

i kno

Ya. If you don't mind lets try the default webmin BIND DNS Server setup. I'm looking at the Global Server Options for BIND now, what's next on the menu?

del? are you asking how to do it or are you saying its done

Asking what to do from here. I'm not done

k
what to do depends on the end result you seek

setup my package manager according to that website, installed the package, restarted X, works. THANKS!

del it sounds like you want your dns server to be authoritative for any domains you host yes?

Ah Ok so I have a url foo.com bought and have the name java server hosting properly set up with them to point to this server

actually it gets a little sticky but ive done it

I would like it to be a master server and forward foo.com and www.foo.com to the same server

hi i have a problem I accidentally did htpasswd -c and now I cannot make the authentication in apache run well

del easily done
are you using something like dyndns rightnow

I registered my domain with dynadot (www.dynadot.com)
I use dyndns's free dynamic DNS service

ok and that in turn points at your server?

can somebody help me with my problem?

But I'm trying to set up my own static/custom DNS server for the foo.com that I just bought

phpcurious, /j #apache

whats the problem phpcurious?
nm
just saw it

de1, /j #bind

i came from #apache, but they referred me to ##linux, and no one was there to help me with my problem…

phpcurious, wait in #apache

kronos003 would it matter that aplay sees my one sound card as 3 seperate devices?

Thanks

i sure am desperate if you could help me .. because I accidentally did htpasswd -c and the passwd is being overwritten…
i can create the passwd file again but the problem is that the authentication is not running anymore not like before i have overwritten it accidentally…

possibly

i cant help but it really is a question for #apache
sorry phpcurious
kronos003 would it help to see the output of aplay -l

actually they said that the solution is to change the file's ownership…so it could be that…but i am not that sure in that… because all other passwd files have the same ownership like the new passwd file i created…

fraid im not too knowledgeable in alsa voodoo - perhaps the folks at #alsa might help?

yea
cheers tho!
(kronos003)
phpcurious pm…

how do i get xgl?

d347hm4n, I tried using Beryl. Now after removing it, Metacity doesn't load when I log in.

ah
well im going to be honest now
i don't know

did you disable desktop effects?

Desktop effects?

system-preferences-look and feel-desktop effects

I have to run Metacity manualy to work.
But my other login works ok.
juanmabc, I don't have Compiz installed. I think that option is from Compiz.

ah, ok

And how do I add new users. I can't find user edit options anymore…..

for those in metal my friends just released there demo http://myspace.com/darknotemetal

viking-ice, yeah WAY off topic
I thought i was bad.
don't post that junk, there's music related chat on other servers you would enjoy

hi i'm trying to install fedora 7 via ftp in a vm through remote desktop - got to the 'starting install process. this may take several minutes…' ~midnight; got up @4am and it was still there. dumped the install and started fresh. it is now at the same 'starting install process. this may
take several minutes…' and it has been about 30 minutes. is this normal?

Melio So the only "Word" that should take place here is answering SP user you cant RTFM and the only Paste that should take place here is to pastebin

hi, how do i configure a headset microphone in kde and fedora 7

Melio has aids, look out!

hi guy

downhillgames, hi

d347hm4n open terminal and run alsamixer you
just need to enable it I guess..

Melio; oddly enough, writing documentation. you?

having my coffee, and trying to update ypops so I can leech yahoo mail to my thunderbird client

ah, mic sele
but now what

to quit

d347hm4n mm == disabled 00 == enabled

spotless, enabled that
now to test, is there a sound recorder?

Hello. I have a quik question…. Do you need a special program to mount cue or iso files in fedora?

no just mount the iso directle

you don't mount cue files, they are text

looks like ypops is too old to get the new beta/yahoo interface

ah thanks

well it doesn't work

there's an update for windows. but the linux build is still not handling the new beta interface

hi all
i think i have a little problem with azureus can anyone help me ?

is this preferrable because i'm in a vm or something?

can i pastebin.ca here?

it gets out to the net just fine; also boots the iso fine too

http://pastebin.ca/675607

psyjoniz; what's wrong?

i'm trying to install fedora 7 via ftp in a vm through remote desktop - got to the 'starting install process. this may take several minutes…' ~midnight; got up @4am and it was still there. dumped the install and started fresh. it is now at the same 'starting install process. this may take
several minutes…' and it has been ~35 minutes.

plz anyone can help me ? i have install jre 1.6

it gets past boot and network proved by pulling stage2.img via ftp
seems to be getting stuck at this starting install process bit. not sure what is trying to happen so i don't know if it is a hardware issue (all hw is virtualized through vmware) or if it is somehow a network issue happening somehow after i've already proven it works (stage2….)

psyjoniz; have you tried using askmethod and installing via a mirror? i know that's not what you wanted to hear but if it works, it's not the installer's fault
sort of a long way to find out, i guess

i guess i'll go down that path if i have to, but i was hoping i didn't have to back out of this method of install to learn another one i am kindof crunched for time

^ might want to ask around some more

come on guys noone knows about this problem ?

does anyone know whats going on behind the scenes during this message?
or how i could get to some logging info?

you can check with ctrl+alt+f1-6 or something

maybe dig up some errors?
ahh, lemmie try that, hold on

but ctrl+alt ungrabs from the VM

only if i move the mouse - swapping consoles is working

well in the alsa mixer i have mic 1 and mic 2, i have tested them both and neither of them work

this is what i needed, thank you

there is also the mic boost setting which i have tested also

bump

you should be sorry

psyjoniz; heh… opsec is good at what he knows. sometimes he knows too much
don't point fingers, man. glad it works
or you found your errors, anyway

*whew*

?
LOL @ the other channel

just finished getting a new xen box up…

yay
good work

the "other" one?
thanks

plz can anyone help me i cannot run azureus

http://pastebin.ca/675607

i can, dimitris82

i very much appreciate your time and consideration - but i'm not going to buy the defense - if opsec were really great, crap "rtfm" type answers wouldn't shoot out when a much more elegant solution is available
if i wanted that, i'd go to #openbsd

psyjoniz; that's your choice, idle here long enough and you'd turn around
haha
*BSD people… don't breathe!

perhaps, but first impression? not so good
you? good

i want to mount a cifs/samba share at bootup, what i plan to do in the rc.local init script. but i need to disable the linux extensions for CIFS (/proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled). the file, however, exists only after attempting a first CIFS mount. any better ideas than mounting in that
script, disabling extensions, unmounting, and mounting again?

it's ok i'm over it hehe
opsec never cared, i'm sure
moving on

this install is freakin killing me

would you like to tell me ?

dimitris82; http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=150340&highlight=java — use the top part of that
i was searching ^_^ silly

Can anyone tell me where I can change the default desktop session VNC server shows? It's showing TWM and I want gnome

man vncserver

Diezel; ~/.vncconfig or something like that
yes, check what Anvil said for that and more

thnx a lot man

berzerka; why are you disabling the extensions?
dimitris82; ^_^ i just installed using that a bit ago, worked great. hosting with java support RunTime Environment 6.0

so i can set the ownership to my user id, because i don't share the uids with the exporting server.

berzerka; why not just add a line to /etc/fstab to mount it?
berzerka; what it comes down to is, if you can mount it using mount, you can put it in fstab to automount

i know, but the with extensions enabled i don't manage to get the permissions right.

/proc/fs/cifs/…" ; umount ; mount"

hum. why don't the permissions work?
ah
what a messy way to mount something
i'm not understanding what's roadblocking you from just mounting it like normal (the extensions… why do you need to disable them)

if i simply mount, all files are owned by 13546 10319 which do not exist on my system.

isn't that what uid=,gid= are for?

from the mount.cifs manual: sets the uid that will own all files on the mounted filesystem. It may be specified as either a username or a numeric uid. This parameter is ignored when the target server supports the CIFS Unix extensions.
see the problem now?

ahh haha sorry, i'm no expert with CIFS

no problem, but this sucks somehow, there should be an option to force using the supplied uids…

is it not possible to disable the extensions on _the server_?
as per the man pag
page*

hah, this is a very large scale installation here, i can not imagine that the admins have them enabled for no reason..

then i am officially out of ideas short of googling but i'm already writing documentation hehe
www.google.com/linux :x i know it's so general but sometimes you get lucky with a nice, easy answer up front

this has got to be the strangest thing i've seen during an install. the first problem i had was the anon ftp i was using suddenly went non-anon. now the ftp server i'm trying to use doesn't have fedora 7 anymore. its like i'm in the twilight zone or something.

yawn

can some one help me with my microphone please

found this article: http://lwn.net/Articles/232430/ i will see wether it helps. thanks for now

i have trned on the mic boost in alsamixer and selected mic 1
i tried to find the capture slider as directed in a forum post but there isn't one

d347hm4n; make sure everything is checked inside "Preferences" then try switching devices
in that order :x

sorry but preferences in alsa mixer?

yes

Preferences

i have runalsomixer from the CLI
from the run command?

d347hm4n; do you use Gnome?

ah run command under alt+f2
no kde

oh :/
you be askin' the wrong person ^_^

maybe try #fedora-kde

will do
not #kde
thanks very much, i will try there, thanks for your time

man it didnt work
i have already installed

already installed what?

jre 1.6

hum

+ 2 /opt/jre1.6/bin/java

does java work in your browser?

http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f7.html

w8 a sec to see

ok i have another question

i don't think tonight is my night hehe
what's up?

i have an amd x2, and i see on the boot that the current kernel doesn't support MP syst

i think i have in browser i saw it on www.java.com

d347hm4n; it said something about a bios bug?

You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 2).

no
just this kernel doesn't support MP systems

d347hm4n; i have an AM2 5600+ X2 and it works fine
it does.

it works fine

dimitris82; k.. well that worked. you get the same error when starting azureus?

azureus needs something else ?
look

with what program is it easiest to setup a ftp jboss server hosting ?

look at what?

http://pastebin.ca/675639

i686 athlon i386

dimitris82; http://slexy.org/paste/4593

well
i think i miss many
like this libswt3-gtk2
thnx downhillgames

dimitris82; yum/yumex is your best friend
well… on fedora linux anyway hehe

how you check this one ?
:P

i clicked the checkbox for "azureus" in yumex and hit process queue then cancel :P
copied and pasted it for you to see

:O
thnx again ^_^

np
hope you get it working ^_~

hmm the change was proposed and considered reasonable on the kernel mailing list, but it is obviously not implemented. there should be a per-mount option "unixextensions=no". well maybe i get to implementing it myself one day until then, i will choose the mount echo remount way. thank you for
that google link, didn't know of that..

m2

hmm, not in /proc/sys either so you can't set it in sysctl.conf

berzerka; sure, i suppose. sorry i couldn't/can't help directly. someone else in the channel may know, though. (it's pretty dead right now)

can someone guide me on installing yum on fedora? i cant ./configure after untar

i didnt install kde from the begining what i need to do to go add-remove programs and add it from there?

says command not found

"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su –login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not
executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.

you realise yum comes with every fedora?

It Worked!!!It Worked!! thnx again bb all

seems like the server i bought doesnt
doesnt recognise yum commands

dimitris82; you can, sure. i use yumex for everything because i find it easier/less problematic/more control/etc…
hehe
dimitris82; yay!

then you got a server with some custom distro.

how can i check the info?

Downloaderz; rpm -q fedora-release
and /var/docs/something…

not sure using regular fedora packages with it is a hot idea.

uname -a helps sometimes…

fedora-release-5-5

rpm -q kernel

AndyCap; may i interject? wouldn't uname -r be more helpful there?

package kernel is not installed

thnx for your advice i will keed it in my mind bb

yes and no. :P

who what is "bb"? heh
AndyCap; i hear that

bye bye?

ah

so i guess i have to install the kernal? how do i do that?
*kernel

downhillgames; you're _running_ a kernel if you can type that
Downloaderz; ^

nah, who needs the kernel ^^

no, but you have a custom distro. which provider is this?

haha Pluxxx 3

keyweb.de

so installing yum is probably not such a hot idea

ah

Downloaderz; if you need something custom installed, lodge a ticket with your host, kick back, drink some Sprite…

alright
thanks for the help

you know… let them bother with it
sure

btw. what does uname -r say?

2.6.9-023stab043.1-smp

heh. don't remember what stab is. seen it before on some hosting machine

a knife?

:P
is this rootds or vrs?
keyweb weren't really big on technical info

vrs

i'm sure this is the dumbest question i've ever asked - can't i just do the entire install from the dvd iso?

of… course?

yeah, you may totally make fun of me now - openly, please

no.. what's up?
you found your errors, right?

well, not really
i looked through the logs
and couldn't find anything especially out of order
just warnings
but its just stuck

Does not compute. Does not compute. Does not compute.

fs stopped writing data like over half an hour ago
so its not moving

ouch

network clicks here and there
no real pattern so not sure if it was a pulse or something but doesn't seem to be doing anything
