Hi - Im trying to install gentoo on my laptop and so far Ive tried the livedvd - which hung at 8% and seems to
google is probably your best bet for this type of thing.
I'm sorry for bothering that long
np, and congrats
ok thanks
hm? no problem..
it goes into standby after like 10minutes anyway
but I mounted my /dev/hda2 drive under /home/benny
OHH… i wouldn't have done that. i'd have mounted it to /home
yeah , or as "none" with some binds?
and put a dir 'benny' (and any other user's home dir) on it.
rss-glx looks cool
is there still a way to mount it as "none" and create two directories on it, one my home dir and one for games?
the main problem is "mounting it at two points" I guess
sorta. what you need to do is: cd /home/benny; mkdir benny; mv * benny/; mv .??* benny/; cd /; umount /home/benny; rmdir /home/benny; mount /dev/hda2 /home
do you have anything else in /home right now?
yeah, that's what I wanted to do anyway
or just /home/benny?
no, just benny
cool.
after that then make 'games' or whatnot.
but if I mount it as /home, I can't create "games" on it "invisible"
there was a "/home/games" dir then…. ?
why does it need to be invisible? do you really care if /home/games is the same as /usr/share/games ?
yeah
why?
anyone here ever use a bytecc RAID controller?
make it .games then
hehe, yeah that'll work… at least you wont see it
because I know myself… one day I wonder "what stupid idiot created the games user?" *delete*
never heard of it. is it real raid, or fakeraid?
that sounds like a biosraid ?
benny99, xD
how much did it cost?
English… worse… every minute…
It's not a bios RAID, it's a PCIE raid card, but I don't know if it's some kind of fakeraid snake oil
did it cost less than USD$200 ?
_AxS_, ya, 50 bucks
Kuprin, you want to know if it has a dedicated risc processor?
biosraid/fakeraid then
my swap is mounted as "none" anyway
k
benny99, thats normal
Just use it as a plain SATA controller, and use Linux software RAID. Works very well.
cruxeternus, planning to dual-boot though
Kuprin, no problem
Is it possible to mount my partition as "none", create "benny" and "games" dirs on it and bind those directories to /home/benny and /usr/share/games ?
Kuprin, you got the hardware
yo
hi there. I'm trying to write an initscript for gentoo. the handbook explains the base functions, but doesn't explain how the scripts get interpreted. seems to resemble bash but with some differences here and there. where can I find more detailed info on the exact syntax?
benny99, err… id think you need to mount it somewhere, but then im no wizard by any means
are you planning to raid both windows and linux? if not, mdraid will work fine for linux
i can't find any info on fedora linux dmraid support (or other support) with that card, so…
a wizard! that's an idea o_o!
how do I disable horizontal scroll on my touchpad?
no, better not
'none' is the filesystem type. it is unused in the case of –bind or mounting proc
no, it's the target dir of swap for example
_AxS_, and Linux generally doesn't support biosraid at all?
another case where the value is unused.
benny99, well, swap is never "mounted", so…
a lot of cards are supported. google for 'dmraid' to see the list
Also, Windows is so slow I don't care that much if it gets raid or not.
yeah
if you create another mount point, then you can –bind your home dir _and_ your games dir to other parts of your filesystem.
_AxS_, hmm…might there be a way to get my nvidia raid card to work?
benny99, im not sure what you are trying to do, but run it by me again and i might hoze your system for you. deal?
ie, say, you make a dir /mnt/seconddrive and mount /dev/hda2 there.
yep. nvidia cards are supported iirc
_AxS_, interesting, now how do I make it see that it's in RAID mode?
what type of raid is it?
_AxS_, striping only, between two drives. It's already set up in the BIOS and a Windows install is on there.
ah ok.
_AxS_, but Gentoo only sees the windows partition on sdb by default
boot the livecd with 'dodmraid'
righty-o
hoze ._. ?
and then you'll see the partitions in /dev/mapper/[biglongstrings]
…that part is important. do not access /dev/sd*
benny99, make pearshaped
yeah, why not, chown root dir and chmod norightsfornobody dir
and I got the same
huh?
:-[ ? pear ?
benny99, screw up, real bad
hm, ok, I knew it already then ^^
make pearshaped && make install
make: *** No rule to create pearshaped. End (translated it myself, sorry :-[)
^^
it isn't stable yet, but something you could do us use unionfs or aufs to overlay hdb2 on top of your filesystem.
that would give you the transparency. but like i said, it is not stable.
no, I found my idea great ^^
got it, thanks guys. Now how does a dmraid device like that interact with GRUB?
yeah, but I don't need it
grub ignores it — grub uses bios calls to access via the same interface windows uses.
weel cruxeternus (this is CRX3) no wheel on that sys still. I have tried the mose from a scrolling sys on it and same thing. and put the mm+ on scrolling sys and it scolls there fine. What next?
cool. gl
_AxS_ okay, so (0,0) will be the first partition on the raid drive, etc?
yep
thanks :-[, thanks so far
wiki Kuprin dmraid install
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_Gentoo_with_NVRAID_using_dmraid
SWEET! my problems are solved!
I knew Gentoo would work, it always does!
try to avoid dmraid, it's a bit evil
I have also tried evev settings from the gentoo wiki, no scroll then either cruxeternus
nolimitsoya:
DrEeevil, howso?
meh.
what about your name ^^ ?
does it mean "good" for a "Dr.Eeevil" :p ?
sorry, am gone :-[
benny99 if anyone should know what is evil DrEeevil will
it is much harder to use than software-raid
Kuprin: the proglem with it is that thre are no linux tools to maintain the raid. but with a raid0 there isn't anything you can do anyways.
proBlem
ah yes, raid 0 … prolonged data suicide
:P
Prolonged data suicide? O_o
howso?
Kuprin, one failed drive==massive dataloss
Ugh. I don't know what to tell you then. We've confirmed the hardware works fine, but X doesn't receive any events from the wheel.
True.
but you can say the same on a single-drive setup like most people have.
Kuprin, besides, the performance benefit is almost nill, if you dont read several megabytes of data at a time, and you never do on a desktop
Kuprin, na, you realy cant…
true. however probability states that you're more likely to lose the drive if you stripe across two.
mhm
Kuprin, see, the data loss is double in the raid0 case
nolimitsoya, only because you have double the disk space…
i dayly transfer few terabytes betwen disks
Kuprin, nope
daily*
have you already tried "xev" to make sure that X isn't seeing input from the wheel?
but an error drops the whole image (both drives) not just the bad part
Oh, another idea.
well, in theory
jacekowski, good for you. i suspect you are not the average user, are you
Try the imps2 protocol, instead of the mouseman one.
Can I DO 0+1 in dmraid?
on desktop - yes
yep
no*
if you're 32bit, you can do raid4 and raid5 too
but you need 4 drives for those
*
_AxS_ I'm amd64, and I don't have 4 drives.
you only need 3 drives for raid5
three drives for raid5
true
dmraid is evil. don't do it unless you have to. you're better off using the in-kernel software raid.
Now that I think about it, I'm almost certain that will fix your problem.
why does everyone slag dmraid? its not that bad.. i use it in production
and why would you need 32 bit?
there's no dmraid raid5 in amd64 kernels yet
oh weird, I hadn't noticed
it is rather painful, in general
_AxS_, it is that bad… proprietary, closed in "no you may not move to another controller without dumping and restoring" algorithms are evil by default
besides, the hardware acceleration provided by even dedicated raidprocessors is overrated…
cruxeternus I dont use it on my other gentoo sys that works with both mouses, why would I need it here?
stop that common sense attack
i'm not saying there aren't drawbacks, but if it's the hardware you have.. besides, i rather like being able to, upon failure of my raid1, having the bios restore the second drive's image. it makes it brain-dead easy for the others in my office to do it
or rather here
Not sure. But I seem to recall that I needed imps2 protocol with that mouse. It might have been the first mouse I ever used on a Linux system.
yes, I did. and it doesnt
Specifically to solve the wheel problem.
_AxS_, rebuilding a software raid is far easier, and you dont stand the risk of having bad controllers ruin your day
I've used a raid5 spread over 3 controllers
*
what player can play .rmvb?
xmetal, anything xine with the real uselfag
ok I will try that, but it seems wierd that the same distro would need a different setup for the same hdwr
Hmmm…well, I also plan on multibooting, and having RAID there would help. Can I do the following? Root and Swap software raid 0+1, Fat32 shared partition no raid, Windows either no raid or a Windows-based software raid?
nolimitsoya, i tried mplayer with real use flag but him cant play
xmetal, the try something running xine
yo uneed 4 drives to do raid0+1
ok
i will try
xmetal, kaffeine if youre the qt type, or gxine if you are loveable
because you stripe two raid1's
nolimitsoya, whats the name in portage of xine?
see above…
I never understood why my MouseMan needs the Microsoft Intellimouse protocol either. But it worked for me then.
_AxS_, aha, it works in reverse. Hmmm…
well it can go either way — a mirror of two stripes or a stripe of two mirrors..
anyhow, you need 4 drives
also, as far as i am aware with biosraid you have to work with full drives — cant do just partitions.
Yeah, with biosraid that's the case
_AxS_, with intel you can
Hey, when attempting to emerge kcontrol, i'm getting an error about the QT version not being the same as the one used to install kdelibs. I am currently running 3.3.8 - but can see 4.3.0 is available. Will all be resolve if I just upgrade qt?
One thing I wonder is why RAID 1 doesn't give much/any performance increase. Shouldn't you be able to do parallel access the same way you can with striping?
that's with their ich7 right? iirc that's supported in the sata driver directly isnt it?
it does
Kuprin, yes you can, and raid1 does give plenty of a performanceboost
reading is 2x faster (or actually Nx faster)
Okay, then we'll go raid 1
writing is the speed ofthe slowest drive
AxeZ, no its not…
ok cruxeternus but as I said it does not need it on the other sys (same mouse, same distro, same xorg)
and of course, yo udon't have 2x the space
nolimitsoya, ?
Well yeah, obviously, but I have 500gb right now, like hell I need that
redoing conf now
Kuprin, the major benefit of raid1 is that you can seek two individual files at one time, given they are smaller than the stripeset
tab error
*nodnod*
AxeZ, sorry…
Same motherboard and PS/2 hardware interface?
np
so why is dmraid a problem with raid 1?
it's a problem?
Kuprin, software raid über alles
nolimitsoya, if you know so much about software raid, how would I effectively use it in a multiboot system?
Kuprin, you wouldnt
nolimitsoya, bingo.
both ps/2, but no….. diff mobo (AMD cs no workee, NForce2 workee)
^^
Kuprin, youd either run windows on an emulation layer, _or_, youll use the windows software raid for the windows partitions and the linux raid for the fedora linux bit
There's Windows software raid?
Is it FOSS?
Or at least free?
in the enterprise versions
Kuprin, it comes with the pack
orly. That works.
hmm damn is there a way to remove the kdebase dependency of k3b ?
XP Pro can do mirroring
– has XP Pro
windows and free … you are really funny
_AxS_, stripe aswell
but that takes the whole drive, iirc. and i think you're screwed if u try and make linux partitions on it.
DrEeevil, I just haven't gotten that death ray to point at Redmond yet, man
_AxS_, never played with it much, but i bet it can do higher modes as well…
..but i'm a little fuzzy on that
higher needs Terminal Server
_AxS_, might well be
Also might want to compare your kernel options related to PS/2 drivers. But I think the differences in hardware might be the issue.
Anyway, if it *doesn't* work, you can always change it back.
Kuprin, the downside on windows software raid is that you cant boot of it. besides, are you sure raid would be any benefit to you?
does anyone know how to get rid of printers that showed up in cups via browsing? I turned off browsing on the local system and on the remote system and restarted cups
huh? yes you cna
can*
_AxS_, no you can't boot from Windows software raid
_AxS_, since when?!
i have a server that boots its windows software raid1
well, its no my server, as my servers dont run windows.. but
_AxS_, aha, manfile doesn't mention raid1…
_AxS_, on windowsxp?
yeah
_AxS_, how on earth does that happen? ive never been able to create raidarrays at install…
_AxS_, ive not found any docs for it either
_AxS_, is this professional or server?
HI apache2 is shut down because it says it needs net.eth0~ ? can someopne help me figure this out???!!!!
sec, i'll get the link
and then pm it to u to keep things slightly on topic in here
_AxS_, what? windows software raid is always ontopic in the gentoo channel
only as in raiding the windows to install Linux software on the disks.
I have net.eth0 working but apache2 says it cannot start due to net.eth0~ not working ?
http://www.overclock3d.net/articles.php?type=3&id=51&page=1&desc=dual_boot_raid_windows_and_linux Found this, this looks really neat guys
ok i cant find it right now, but it is a dynamic storage thing.
nolimitsoya, you can't create them at install, you have to create them after you install
_AxS_, yes, but google doesnt know anything about booting of it…
Kuprin, thats what i thought aswell
Why would you want to dual boot windows and linux on RAID systems?
i didn't look anything up on booting it, i just did it and it worked
but, as i mentioned, i dont think you can dual-boot it
That's just silly. Raid belongs to critical systems, which are not the type of system you reboot much.
ok cruxeternus wheel works with IMPS/2 ( :/\ }{ ) . but the thumb button does not. I just cant have it all I guess
hehe
is there a kernel parameter to tell kernel to not use default ide chipset for harddisk ?
And they are certainly not the type of system you dual-boot.
let me guess, 2.6.22 kernel upgrade?
yes
cdrom seems to need it
i havent dealt with this yet, but someone will chime in soon i hope
i know there's a solution
and as I side note cruxeternus wheel does not work through my KVM on either sys. but that does not surprise me. I have not used the mouse through it, as I had this issue with KVM's and mice since the mid 90's
yes you could just disable it in the kernel but then the cdrom wont work
no there's a way they can co-exist
oh please tell me
actually, have you tried tha pata driver in libata?
doing that and adding scsi cdrom support might do you ok
_AxS_, as i guessed (and asked), windows _server_ is able to boot of raid1 and raid1 only, while that option is not available to the professional users
_AxS_ I have been wondering about that PATA driver myself
..except it worked in my xp pro install
s/professional/rich/
DrEeevil,
(i'm 99.9% sure that they didn't fork out for windows server)
_AxS_, then .1% it is
RAID 1 is just a mirrored disk set-up, of course windows can boot from it.
RobbieAB, my thoughts as well
yes that's the one my harddisk needs
yeah — as long as windows recognizes dynamic volumes its fine right?
It doesn't use the RAID though, so disk 2 is liable to not match when you switch back to Linux
and xp pro does, so youre good. [/windows-raid-topic]
stop trying to set-up RAID on dual-boot machines. It doesn't make sense.
i concur
RobbieAB, hes not…
Who is?
so no idea on the thumb button cruxeternus ?
RobbieAB, _AxS_ is not trying to dualboot on raid
join www.filebits.org
Then why all the talk?
windows is not able to boot of software raid1 unless its enterprise
RobbieAB, Kuprin is
I'm trying to set up raid on a dual-boot machine.
Windows should be able to boot from a RAID 1 disk, irregardless of the version, because it just doesn't SEE the fact it is raid.
so Kuprin needs a software raid that can be recognized by win AND lin?
thats what he wants yes
WOW
RAID wouldn't give enough of a speed boost to windows to matter.
it's called hardware raid and costs too much
RobbieAB, any references to that?
wow.. we just keep going in circles dont we…
CRX3, or two that can work side by side, dividing disks
hmmm
how about we say no to windows and stop discussing it?
straight forward logic. For RAID to work for speed, you need to have a VFS layer that can exploit it.
and RAID1 is for saftey not for speed he wants striping if he needs speed instead of sanity
RobbieAB, but you also need to make sure you dont end up with an inconsistent array once booted…
not true - with multiple disks, reads get divided across each. your seek times go down and throughput goes up
CRX3, diffrent kinds of benefit
To use linux software RAID with windows, you will end up with so many wrapper layers round all disk access, it will actually be slower.
thats what I said
CRX3, no, i ment the performance benefit differs
ndiswrapper for raid???? lol
only if you don't end up loosing performance due to wrapper layers.
yes I agree DrEeevil this needs to go to #gentoo-chat
oh god lol
if I software-raid ONLY my Gentoo / partition, will other operating systems (Windows, Ubu) be smart enough not to eat it?
Kuprin, hopefully
true. however fortunately the implementation of these layers in linux are efficient enough to show this benefit
ie, will they see something there on both drives, or will one of them look like unpartitioned space?
mdraid works on a partition. so yes. you'll see a partition on each drive. if you dont touch that partition you will have no issues
s quit ["Bai"]
4 -!- diabel [n=diablo@tofik.ztpnet.pl] has joined
4 -!- ls quit
4 -!- diabel [n=diablo@tofik.ztpnet.pl] has joined
Kuprin, MS OS's will see it as unknown type and should not touch it if it's linux software raid
ubuntu will access it if you have dmraid support in your kernel.
_AxS_, I'm talking Linux software raid, not dmraid.
as am i
linux software raid = mdraid
dmraid = biosraid
oh, you typo'd dmraid and not mdraid. Okay.
oops so i did
Hehe, that solves that confusion.
okay, time to figure out a partition scheme then.
what happened?
Is there any virus's known to linux?
10GB should be good for Windows boot…what's good to put as a 10gb standalone Gentoo partition?
:s
ClNorris, not many, and none in active circulation right now
with mdraid you'll be building a separate mirror for each partition, essentially. or maybe you can use lvm and sub-partition the big mdraid block. dunno
Kuprin, cool
_AxS_, yeah, separate mirrors for each partition is the plan
ClNorris, there are a small handfull and not that active
_AxS_, that lets me dual boot, have a fast RAID, and not care what my Windows setup does because it's Windows anyway. The priority is fast Linux.
if you're not planning to have too much installed, 10gig can work for everything in / but /var and /home
why is nsplugin disabled for various JDKs and JREs in default-linux/x86/package.use.mask?
grknight, if linux becomes a bigger desktop for end users, virus production will increase. Will linux still that safe??
ClNorris, who knows?
but i'd recommend giving 20 minimum
ClNorris, any OS is only as "safe" as the user makes it
oh, don't raid your swap.
grknight, exactly.
Linux will never grow that much … because humanity is too stupid and too lazy to bother with
hello! does anyone know how can I verify in a script that a certain useflag is in effect for a certain (not installed yet) package - in any conf file or on the command line?
Question, my volume is unmuted, and i hear sounds, but my volume icon in gnome says its still muted.
by nature of the beast, 'viruses' per se can't really affect linux. other things can of course (trojans, etc)
swap on RAID does have some benefits.
_AxS_, I know that, but make one swap on each drive and give them the same priority, they will stripe.
they ll all stick to windows
yep
Santanabaer, if lazyness is the issue, ubuntu is far easies than windows to set up and use…
Santanabaer, dell has released a line of computers loaded with linux for end users.
Santanabaer, did you hear XP is being discontinued at the end of this year? I don't think they will. Also, I spent less time setting up Gentoo than I did Windows last time.
Santanabaer, *home users
only if you mirror it so you dont lose the memory on a drive failure… it is slower tho
people dont wanna learn new things
they are cousy
psih0man, `equery u -a =(package)-(version)`
or is there something i'm missing?
Kuprin, did you hear that they are going to replace Vista in 3 years?
ClNorris, that's mostly an attempt to trademark the number 7 in the US so they can attack everyone in court.
Kuprin, and they are doing away with the start menu.
is version mandatory?
if I was even contemplating RAID for speed, I would look at faster disks first.
true
lol Kuprin I didnt hear that new for me
RobbieAB, I already have some pretty fast disks.
psih0man, no.. but if you just do `equery u -a package` you'll get them all for every ebuild that exists
of course they will phase out xp. Arm-twisting is what Vista's all about.
15k rpm SATAII raptors?
Hey all, I am having issues with webapp-config on AMD64, it is saying that it needs apache 1.3.x when I have apache 2 installed. I am using the same flags as my i386 box that runs happily on apache2. any ideas?
then i might | uniq them … ?
Arm-twist arm-twist arm-twist. I only know of one person who bought it because they just wanted it, and he's a cretin.
webapp-config? is it the same version?
anyone know where to start with developing my own Desktop manager?
psih0man, if you want
llol
..as your other system
yes
probably by reading the source of any of the other projects
RobbieAB, not quite that crazy, no. 7400 SATAII barraccudas.
No, RAID on mirror is what I was referring to.
_AxS_, that would be lazy wouldn't it?
could someone tell me what package provides libkrb5?
I rebulit both systems at the same time this weekend
ay caramba!
I only have so much money, and software raid doesn't cost money
http://robobunny.com/projects/weatherspect/html/
oh, i was talking specifically about swap on raid
Kuprin, good luck with software raid!
amd64 stable versiona and x86 stable versions are different.
so if you need speed enough to consider striping your swap, I would upgrade the disks first.
I guess you are bored and have a lot of time at disposition that you wanna mess with the source of other window managers to create your own
are they the same version?
swap on mirror RAID is what I meant
ah
My lag is really bad…
Santanabaer, having alot of time is just a figure of speach, I have too much time.
*speech
lol ClNorris
RobbieAB, I just want to maximize what I have.
not really — u have any idea what the size of the gnome codebase is?
Is anybody else having problems building apache-2.0.58-r2 with USE=ldap?
there's an ebuild for that in berkano overlay
Santanabaer, i am just upset with how gnome and kde make their applications look so bland
I guess he doesnt wanna know
i know ^^
i find it hilarious xD
..wouldnt it make sense then to build themes?
hehe
_AxS_, probably extremely large, but… I will eventually get bored and give up.
if you really want to put your Windows on to a Linux compatable software RAID I would sugggest looking at Xen-Linux with a VT coapable CPU and shove windows into a VM
guys, i have my mobile phone which gets /dev/ttyACM0 but can only be accessed by the root. If i change the permission, reconnecting the mobile resets the permission, how do i make it accessible by all user by default ?
emerge -p webapp-config
shows 1.50.10
RobbieAB, I'm not that worried about the Windows at this point.
_AxS_, that is what everyone says to do, but the theme isn't what bothers me. Its how KDE and GNOME make their applications blocky
_AxS_:err .15
_AxS_, i want beautiful applications….
game_boy, what group gets set.. is it plugdev?
Does Linux software raid care whether partitions are primary or logical?
nope
i dunno, how do i check that ?
stop worrying about disk access speed. Get most stuff to run of RAM without swapping, and disk speed stops mattering much
let him play
no
game_boy, replug the devices then `ls -l /dev/ttyACM0`
Kuprin, http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gentoo_Install_on_Software_RAID
KDE is astoundingly gorgeous, if you customise it nicely.
arright
I just want to get the absolute most out of this system, lol.
i did equery u -a kopete &1 | grep "+ +" and it returns nothing even if without grep i have a long list
besides, having a raid1 isn't exactly a horrible thing
mirror the disks, and get enough RAM that you don't need to swap
runlevelten, in case you missed what I was saying… Its not the desktop manager.. Its how the applications are programmed. I don't want to divide a window into 9 blocks so that I can have something centered at the top or middle.
can you rafb.net/paste the error you're having?
Can you get software money now?
I agree. RAID 1 or higher is good.
psih0man, what's that &1 business for? just pipe it
RobbieAB, I was planning on raid 1, both for speed and the reliability is nice.
did that, too
"could not load /lib/modules/2.6.19-gentoo-r5/modules.dep: No such file or directory".. too much scratches on the cd right?
Anyone know how to program with Xlib?
not much speed boost for RAID 1
it gets set to "root" group
Qt layouts don't require that.
i thought it would print on &2
RobbieAB, significant read speed, no write speed
&1 puts stderr, stdout, etc together
- laen [n=laen@84-245-5-74.dsl.cambrium.nl] has joined #gentoo
Can someone help me my driver installation?
..i think
could we put a disclamer on the download link for the livecd?
10:57
I'm following the handbook but no luck
i know, thats me
that is correct
webapp-config -I -h myadmin -d phpmyadmin phpmyadmin 2.10.1
_AxS_:* Fatal error: Your configuration file sets the server type "Apache"
_AxS_:* Fatal error: but the corresponding package does not seem to be installed!
that is correct
_AxS_:* Fatal error: Please "emerge =net-www/apache-1.3" or correct your settings.
_AxS_:* Fatal error(s) - aborting
?
_AxS_, you're semi-familiar with windows software raid, those dynamic disks can be on logical partitions too, right?
psih0man, try `equery u -a kopete|grep "+"`
tnx
pls think hard now and remember!
sorry, term irc copy/paste issues
are you there ?
no. windows dynamic volumes tale over the entire drive. its not partition-related
ah no problem
you can of course get the best host out of your system … but I believe "best" can be seen from different point of views … I mean you can create hfs, jfs and other experimental partions (as example) but then it might lack of stability
Anyone who can aid me?
take
runlevelten, i am using gnome…
guys, i have my mobile phone which gets /dev/ttyACM0 but can only be accessed by the root. If i change the permission, reconnecting the mobile resets the permission, how do i make it accessible by all user by default ?
_AxS_, what the crap? Not according to what I'm reading…that sounds scary
What actually stops you making a Qt app?
runlevelten, is for KDE correct?
game_boy, it says "brw-rw—- 1 root root"?
this is when you run it? or when you emerge it?
_AxS_, according to what I'm reading you can convert a partition to a dynamic disk.
or crw*
check out udev rules
write a uder rule for it
nope. you can convert a _drive_.
Anyone use kern .23rc with nvidia drivers successully?
I mean, if one library/toolkit doesn't work how you want it, you use another, surely?
at least from my experience.
ClNorris:
1
_AxS_, only one way to find out. Time to try it.
how do i make udev rule, can you please help ?
there's nothing to stop you writing a Qt app that functions nicely in Gnome
yep, use udev
runlevelten, I would imagine. But I was under the impression that QT was soley for KDE
game_boy, then you need a udev rule to change it.. lots of info online about that
good luck.. fair warning, it seems to be a one-way process
No
_AxS_:That is when I run it
runlevelten, is there an application that is made for GNOME that uses QT
you read the instructions, and experiemnt until it works
ClNorris, any QT app can run in the gnome desktop
Someone, anyone..
It is a long time since I last did anything in udev, and I can only vaguely remember it.
grknight, how come the install manual said to -QT in the USE flags when installing gnome?
http://reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html
Define for gnome. You can fully support gnome as the DE, but the Gnome project itself doesn't use Qt as its gui toolkit
_AxS_, hold on, how one-way are we talking here? Formatting it from Linux will still handle it right?
is there a way to see all active useflags for the system (including those set by the profile)?
dunno
ClNorris, because it's not required.. you can turn it on if you want
grknight, do i need to emerge QT?
could well be. Have you tried with a new CD?
ClNorris, any package that uses it will pull qt
Yeah, okay, tha'ts way too hazardous for me
you might consider having Qt and Gtk either way for a desktop machine running GUI apps, tbh.
I'll go with Linux software raid and no raid in windows
s/uses/requires/
Gonna try now heh. Thanks for the confirmation
i believe it replaces the partition table.. so i really dont know
grknight, which would you prefer to to design QT applications?
_AxS_, yeah, I just read it does. That's way too ugly and dangerous.
ClNorris, i don't write software
i agree
grknight, what do you use linux for?
_AxS_, besides, I do 90% of my work in linux anyway
ClNorris, best OS at this time
grknight,
I use Qt Designer. It's probably the best Free GUI builder on GNU/Linux.
I loathe windows, and only use it when I absolutely have to. Problem is I'm in game development research, so it does come up.
You'll forgive me for this contentious statement, but glade et al are like childrens toys by comparison.
runlevelten, may I ask how you design applications then?
is there an ebuild for qt designer ?
what how I design the GUI?
And the flaming starts.
runlevelten, yes
Partition wise I'm separating /boot, /usr, and /home from everything else, how big do you guys think I should make /usr?
I was thinking about 50 gigs or so.
yeah that's cool.
I have no idea, my development platform is very much a work only machine and isn't gentoo
then again, I can't exactly back up /usr to anything, but whatever. Still gives me a narrower point of failure.
(I can't afford to go backing up 50 gigs on a regular basis, lol)
With Qt Designer. It's very much like insert powerful commercial GUI painter here
With Qt Designer. It's very much like insert powerful commercial GUI painter here
runlevelten, lol
i keep all but /home and /var on the same partition, within 20gig
fair enough, I don't need anything in /var since I'm not serving
i stopped doing that.. allways ran into problems having seperate partitions full.. and security wise.. no document has ever shown my _why_ seperate partitions are safer
hmm wonder if i can use qt designer in c#
runlevelten, can i emerge qt designer?
it's build space and working directory space… handy to give it a fair chunk.
laen, mostly backup and failure related, really…you have a point, I can just back up the specific mount points anyway
seperate partitions make it hard for a user to fill your harddrive and stop logs from being written
it's pretty much language agnostic.
ah ok
yeah wasn't telling you, just opening a small point of discussion, maybe i'd even learn something from you
iull give it a go
dont like glade much
although if you want to you can write stuff *in* qtd in c c++, I tend to save to a .ui and do that work elsewhere
you mean separate partitions serve as a crude form of quota set-up?
okay, we're going mdraid. This should work now.
Glade isn't…isn't the most polished program ever.
i use monodevelop for my coding, i just need an app to create the gui
I have no idea how good/existent qt/mono is, heh
The benefit of separate partitions is it allows you to use different file-systems for different parts of the file-system (sigh…)
Separate partitions also allow you to specify that certain parts of the filesystem should not contain devices or executables
and it allows some bits to be mounted ro when others must be rw.
is there some kind of PIM application w/o a GUI?
it also makes it easier to spread the filesystem out over multiple devices.
say using ncurses
it can make back-ups easier…
do I need to continue?
Regarding my problem getting X to work decently, I've now gone through the Gentoo X Guide one more time. I get the following error when trying to startx: http://pastebin.com/m3d380a43 and this is how my xorg.conf looks like: http://pastebin.com/m21a5f426
You're the first to give all that info
It has its uses, yes. I have to decide if they're actually worth it over just making a big monolithic / on my machine.
anyone able to help me out with my wireless problem ? http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-573390.html
Thanks, good points. It's just so hard to figure out what size it needs to be.
what video card do you have?
I can see it being a lot more useful on a public system, mainframe, server, etc
aaroe posting your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file would be helpful too
now all those points aren't really that relevant for a personal machine. I would just split of /boot and /home from the rest
Well, one of my troubles was the /var dir which i made only 2GB, then i had another partition which was too big.. meh.
bWell, one of my troubles was the /var dir which i made only 2GB, then i had another partition which was too big.. meh./b
I need a PIM application to work in console envoronment
Well, putting together a new webserver now heh
LVM. Makes the partition size problem a lot easier.
Well, gonna do software raid1. And Hardened Gentoo on top of that.
throw LVM in as well for good measure.
runlevelten, how do I get QT designer?
LVM seems tempting, how much work is it to set up?
With no experience anywhere.. dunno, rather not. Gresecurity has RBAC
_AxS_ It's a ATi Radeon 9600
the gentoo homepage does not specify a color for links, who should I talk with about this?
fair enough. I would suggest /boot /home and a /data
tdr_ coming right up…
ok. and what is in your VIDEO_CARDS in make.conf?
/data?
For the stuff apache is going to be allowed access to.
or lighttpd or whatever your httpd is.
Well the users are gonna put their websites in /home/public_html..
Ah. Read all the how-tos.
try bugzilla, but i'm afraid nobody really cares about the homepage
did you figgure it out? was that error you pasted a runtime thing or a compile/emerge-time thing?
what are you saying with that
And when you think you know how to secure the system, read all the how-tos again.
_AxS_ VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx"
ah ok.
so you're following http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers ?
I don't use it in Gentoo, but word on the street is it comes with qt…
runlevelten, thank you
s/in/on/
yngwin, i'll do that (and I hope somebody cares, yellow links over white background are nice
)
Yeah, it will be something i'll be constantly working on and learning from. just hope the users won't experience too much trouble
No, actually just the X Guide, but it mentioned the different inputs for nvidia and ati cards
What I'm saying is if you aren't very experienced, it is going to be very easy to leave large holes in the system security with that set-up
that is a runtime error, Still working on it. But my job is getting in the way
_AxS_:thanks for the help
that could be part of your issue. try that howto, it is geared directly to what you want
Ok, I'll do that. Thanks.
ah ok. no idea in that case. i don't have a machine i can install it on to test either
Oh well to start with, to get ssh access you need to be in a special group i create.. then vsftpd locks the ftp part down.. grsec/pax the rest, and it's rbac.
I would be more worriesd about the httpd set-up
why?
would you know why compiz-999 , amarok , krusader , k3b depend from kdebase ? and do you believe I could somehow deinstall kdebase ?
No biggie, figured some one might slap me in theface with the obvious
laen: how about moving this to #gentoo-server? mainly so i can eavesdrop without having the rest of the channel chat
hey all
weird what package has lspci
lol
heh sorry
i've added the 'real' USE flag, and now for whatever lame reason, my system wants to install sys-devel/gcc-3.3.6-r1? eh?
lspci is in pciutils
for some reason it isn't showing up on my computer
yvw
i dont use kde…..sorry. but no, afaik you need some form of kdebase to run kde apps like that.
why? Because the httpd will be exposed to the internet, meaning it is going to be one of the most vulnerable components of the system.
whether it is meta or mono
Every option you switch on in it, opens up the potential of another security hole.
I know, I kno, heh
ahh alright thx _AxS_
because those apps have dependencies for mime handling, preview generation etc etc
teach b1f30_w0rk about libstdc++
To fix a python missing libstdc++.so.x, run "find /usr/lib/ -name "libstdc++.so.*"", add the path to the dir libstdc++.so.x is in to /etc/ld.so.conf, run "/sbin/ldconfig", run "gcc-config -l", run "gcc-config numberOfNiceProfile", run "env-update". (details:
gentoo-detailed/python%20libstdc++)
well but what about konqueror I mean its a kde thing too
Yep, locking that and it's config file down too. But _AxS_ asked us to stop
ok thats not it
emerge libstdc++-v3
for instance, some apps used to rely on arts in an apparently inexplicable way, but it was because people had movie previews enabled, etc
hmm ya
no, i asked u to move, so i can read it elsewhere. i'm interested
and besides, #gentoo-server is dead and really shouldn't be
Oh didn't see Where to? #gentoo-server?
Allright
anyone able to tell me why i can't find lscpi on my system?
did you emerge pciutils?
emerge pciutils
heh
sup _AxS_
not 2 much, u?
_AxS_ and likewhoa nope
deploy servers as usuable
hm ok well either fo you two now hae the answer to the real question of http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-573390.html
that was a good answer, but still didn't work
really? it didn't just need libstdc++-v3 ?
hm. i guess it needs the whole thing then…
o_O
haha !!! I found it kdebase DOES need k3b krusader compiz and amarok … but not the other way round … if I do equery depends krusader and all the other they are clean !!!
erm, dubleyouteeehf?
so I can delete kdebase
huh?
/join #wmii
oups
as simple as that .. If I do equery depends kdebase it lists k3b and the others … bit if I do equery depends k3b, krusader etc … the list is empty
your issue was that 'real' (ie the realmedia stuff) needed to emerge gcc-3.3.x right? that's usually so it gets libstdc++.so.5 , which emerging libstdc++-v3 will also give you
of course. k3b is an application, nothing depends on it
it is the 'leaf'
so it means k3b, krusader and all the others dont need kdebase
and that's fine - doesn't make sense, but no biggie - the problem is, my arch is athlon64, and the old gcc doesn't like that
_AxS_ I followed the ATi guide as you suggested - it boots up nicely in KDE now. Thanks. I just tested if it also worked when trying to log in via VNC, but with that method I'm still jsut being presented a grey screen. Any suggestions?
no. it means kdebase doesn't need k3b
i haven't played with vnc so i'm not sure….
if what you said was true then equery depends kdebase wouldnt show k3b
_AxS_ Ok, but thank you for your help and time so far
no. 'depends' says what packages depend on the one you type.
it doesnt list the dependencies _of_ the package you type
hmm strage … _AxS_ but for now everything seems to be running
I hope
I could make the test and just deinstall kdebase to see what happens #
im using kde-base without k3b and krusader, works fine
then if I was wrong I just reinstall it again ^^
you ARE my DEAR
just great
hi
who needs a gui for cd burning anyways?
Hello
hi
hmmm or wait … hmm
hey =( =p
How to set wifi(nic) mode in /etc/conf.d/net ?
sup
how can I @bind@ devices automatically ?
using the fstab
man udev ?
udev ?
no
bind devices? huh?
wiki benny99 customizing udev
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Customizing_UDEV
with udev you can *bind* a device to /dev/something
sorry, you told me about that
I've gotte KDE up and running on my local screen, but when trying to connect to my Gentoo box with vnc I'm only being presented a grey screen with an X-shaped cursor. I've added "startkde" to my ~/.vnc/xstartup but that doesn't seem to be sufficient.
you mean 'mount –bind' directories?
use fstab mount options
using mount –bind
exactlz
yeah D
but how ??
/tgt/dir /src/dir none bind 0 0 — in fstab
I finally understood your point man happy I didnt deinstall kdebase
thanks
hehe good
sorry, moved all my dirs etc. … could not login
what are those last two numbers again ?
one is the bootflag and the other ?
has to do with error checking. look at fstab
ah
0 0 is fine because u dont want it to do anything
thanks again
np
how to set wifi mode in /etc/conf.d/net ?
I tried mode_ra0="ad-hoc" and others
get wireless-tools and wpa stuff (if you are going to use wpa) and read /etc/conf.d/wireless.example
…and put the stuff you want into /etc/conf.d/net
Ok i try
Could someone tell me how to get iptables match packets headed for the local machine so I can change the –to-destination?
is there anyway to get vnc to behave like apple remote desktop ? where the vnc is actually the remote desktop that the user is seeing as logged into :0 ?
you mean, make it work exactly like a remote X session?
_AxS_, a user is logged into the machine on :0 ..i want to login and do stuff on that desktop
right. no idea. but when u figgure it out tell me how
_AxS_, someone mentioned freeNX
_AxS_, that sounds like the way to go
openvnc might have that functionality too, unsure
any rtl8180 users?
that's gigabit right?
"could not load /lib/modules/2.6.19-gentoo-r5/modules.dep: No such file or directory".. it isn't a faulty cd, just burned a new one. Any idea?
modproble -l doesn't work either.
guys… i got an old p200 that i have gentoo on it (lol, i know) and it was sitting there turned off for a while! i turned it on and i can't login saying that it can't find /bin/login..
….thats not something you should see…
_AxS_ um depends its for wirelesss cards with the rtl8180 chipset and rtl8185 chipset
ahh ok sorry, no i don't know anything about it then
boo
i know, but can't do anything cause of it.
which livecd?
2007.0
:'( oh damn… I thought * would include .*
it can't coldplug nor can it hotplug
nope.
i mean specifically what file name
How do you mean what filename?
livecd-x86-2007.0-r1.iso
that type of thing
that one
Alternatively, is it possible to send packets to another table rather than another chain?
would be weird cause i just installed my own pc with it, and that went perfectly fine.
whatever, everything else works great, thanks
cool.
its not a ram issue or something is it? what about booting with noapic or acpi=off ?
sorry for bothering you that much for a that small thingy
not at all
any tips for using dyndns, anyone?
how should I set my hostname?
more info required…
is any dhcpcd configuration needed?
what info
?
No tested ram with memtest86, think i'm gonna do that again though and do the acpi=off and noapic tests too.
http://pastebin.ca/640738 Any input please?
about what you're trying to do.. end goal, etc..
stlil weird, cause this is my old pc, which installed fine before. I'm getting scared
anyone able to tell me how to enable ARC4 Cipher algorithms in my kernel under cryptography right now have — next to it
because they are required by other parts of the kernel, and you cannot turn them off
oh ok so they are on though good
hm, something else, can I add my own Keyboard Shortcut Commands?
yep. '—' means on
they should change that to '-*-' or something
like those in System-Preferences-Keyboard Shortcuts ?
bleh almost wish that they weren't on and tha twa my problme
ah, sorry, will google myself
have a nice day, bye
no idea — try #gentoo-desktop
command not found". I'm a bit puzzled about this.
end goal: to have a fqdn so I can touch my machine from the outside
tried specifying the path to startkde?
ok cool. with what service?
as in website?
also, to have the machine properlyconfigured to use dhcp and know its dyndns domain name
Ehrm, no. Do you happen to know what the path is?
You need to give the full path, because your environment variables are probably different under vnc.
as in ssh, ntp, ftp
normally /usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde
ok. for that, dhcp isn't going to use the dyndns name. but that's a simple entry in hosts
Thanks alot Puschkin, _AxS_ and cruxeternus
nono, i mean, 'no-ip.com' or … who's handling your dyndns
what entry?
Hi - I'm trying to install gentoo on my laptop, and so far I've tried the livedvd - which hung at 8%, and seems to be a common problem… and now, I can't get the minimal CD to boot properly (probably my drive's fault), so, could I use the livedvd's shell (which I can access, and works fine)
to download the stage3 tarball and install that way?
to make your system know its dyndns domain name
yes, how should it look?
the entry in hosts
you just add it to /etc/hosts on say, '127.0.0.1'
aha
but that's aliased to localhost
ie: 127.0.0.1 [myfqdn] [myhostname] localhost
aha
ok
anything else? dhcpcd secret sauce?
Can it be true that the command startkde is now known as start_kdeinit in 3.5?
dhcpcd is entirely separate from this
you probably want to set a dns_domain_.. thing in /etc/conf.d/net tho (see net.example for syntax)
aha
Great, it is my memory.. was working before hehe.
Do 'which startkde' on the machine locally, to see where the bin you need is.
Ok, I'll give it a try.
Memtest86, has configuration Test BIOS (Std) and Test BIOS (All).. the Std isn't giving any problems, All though.
happens.. old hardware does die
do you have everything set up to auto-assign the ip address to your dyndns?
meaning, have I set up a dyndns client?
if so, the answer is yea
are you saying I should use something else than my isp-provided DNS?
if so, what should I use
?
can mysql 5.0.44 be used as a slave to replicate a 5.0.45 master?
Hi, I'd like to have several versions of the same kernel on my box, so that i can try to keep at least a working one. Are there some genkernel options for such a layout please?
don't use genkernel
yes, if the livedvd boots fine then just follow the handbook from there.. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=3
then you can keep as many as you like
well, yeah, if you want to know the name of it at all times. isp-provided dns will change whenever u get a new ip
yes
i would upgrade the slave to 5.0.45 also
so it is pretty useless if you want to connect from remote
so what DNS should I use?
yeah, not in portage yet
however yes it should work as is
well, i assume you would want to use a dyndns service, ..?
thanks
so, they alo provide dns?
cool
hehe
hi - does anybody know of a portage overlay with vlc-0.9 or above
?
but I'd rather use another…
i'm not talking dns servers — that's different. your isp's is fine. i'm talking about the one that you get your name from
but that's exactly what a dns server does, no?
tells whose name is what
no. well sorta. dns servers provide name resolution.
but they get those names from domain hosts..
mack_sim no problem, but if want to go on my own how should i proceed? having several kernels with different names is ok, but how about the /us/lib/modules? how to tell the kernel to use a given directory to look for them?
so if you want a domain name for your computer to be accessible by others, you need to get it from a domain host.
and since you dont have a static ip, its gotta be from a dyndns service
yes
Thanks, I've just extracted the archive, and all seems well.
and, to have my machine use its dydns name, not the one assigned by the ISP… I do what?
there's an option called 'LOCAL_VERSION"
Woooh all the memory i have on every single pc is broken according to that BIOS (All) test. I have my doubts
hehe, ok then
well, you need to sign up with a dyndns service. which one do you have?
erm… the free one?
_AxS_ LOCAL_VERSION? Is it a bootloader, a kernel compilation option?
btw, your isp's assigned name will always be there — you just want to also assign another one
sure
I did assign another one
its a compile option, in menuconfig. specifies an additional name to the whole kernel image host so you can have multiple compiles of the same kernel version
now I want my dogdamn machine to stop calling itself home-104020
top option on the second screen
/etc/conf.d/hostname has what in it?
and what is your dyndns name?
hi. i'm having problems, making gcc (currently using 4.1.1 und trying to set up 4.1.2): http://rafb.net/p/ydJIxg61.html
_AxS_ ok, I noticed that option. How about the modules? are they going to be shared host amongst the different kernels?
nope.
can anybody tell me, whats wrong ?
I've changed /etc/conf.d/hostname to the dyndns name
they will be installed in their own separate '2.6.[version]-[LOCAL_VERSION_STRING_HERE]' dir
da-guru: well, did you read the error?
is it not going to be updated by dhcpcd, or summat?
well, yes
as long as /etc/conf.d/hostname is not 'localhost' it should not be overwritten.
da-guru: have you ruled out hardware issues?
The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem.
my hardware is working fine
oh cool
_AxS_ thank you so much for the explanations. Is there some documentation on gentoo.org about that?
thanks
secondly, did you add the dns_domain_… setting with your fqdn in it to /etc/conf.d/net ?
nope. but there is if you gogle the kernel docs
can't find the proper setting, no
google*
da-guru: but have you actually tested it. ie memtest, a cpu stress test, hard drive diag
have a look at /etc/conf.d/net.example
i use 'dns_domain_lo="[my.fq.dn]"' but i think just 'dns_domain="…"' would work too
sure!
and its not just gcc, it's the same with glibc, samba and several other packages
The fix in Firefox 2.0.0.6 to prevent starting IE, is that effecting X versions?
I did… can't find the setting
grep 'dns_' /etc/conf.d/net.exdample
err, net.example
da-guru: forgive me for not believing that you've actually run memtest and cpuburn, but "sure!" doesn't inspire confidence. and given that you're having issues with more than one package… that's further evidence of hardware problems
does your isp/modem require a specific hostname for dhcp?
I dunno
guess I'll find out soon nough
but I believe not
It changed with the last IP "update"
AFAIK thats the main reason you would need it set in /etc/conf.d/net
otherwise its not necessary there anyway
nah, its because now /etc/conf.d/domainname isnt used.
^^ np
but you can believe me, i did
Hi! What's a good jabber server to emerge? I tried jabberd, but it didn't work out of the box. The init daemon failed to listen on some ports and the init script failed to stop the daemon.
_|Nix|_, I use Openfire and it works well - there is a Wildfire (now Openfire) doc in the wiki I think
I think openfire is a little more complex than jabberd though
emerging now … is there a lot of configuration? I basically just need it for debugging Pidgin …
"gcc: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5: No such file or directory" … what package provides that? emerge libstdc++ –pretend shows version to be 3.3
hi I'm back
libstdc++-v3 does
or gcc-3.3.x
jorvis, better to use libstdc++-v3
_|Nix|_, a little bit, yes - you have to setup some kind of database for it, then go through a configuration wizard via a web interface - not too bad, but I'd suggest reading the wiki
yep
gentoo wiki
thanks, will adding the libstdc++-v3 mess anything up or will it just be a backward-compatibility thing?
emerging that will give youthe library you need. so yeah you'll be good.
my "at" stopped working (alt-gr + q)
gcc-4 provides libstdc++.so.6 ; .so.5 is from gcc-3.x and so you need the other package
jorvis, that package is for binary compatibility of things gentoo can't build or are older
Oh, no, so I have to emerge mysql?
@ works now
bye, and thanks again ! _AxS_
_|Nix|_, no, there's another alternative
thanks
Any reason a system wouldn't boot properly with 256GB of RAM?
how do I setup sshd so it locks a user out for 10 minutes after 3 failed attempts (or something to this affect)
bexamous nope
bexamous, what problem are you having?
128GB boots fine, 256GB is hanging
how about because the linux kernel can't work on a system with that much ram?
bexamous, wait, 256 GB?
what is limit?
honestly no idea, but what system is this? is it 64bit or 128bit?
bhonestly no idea, but what system is this? is it 64bit or 128bit?/b
That's not true
8 way opteron, socketf
8 4GB dimms per cpu
trying to qualify it
ahh.. ok cool
any ideas?
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Protect_SSHD_with_DenyHosts
bexamous, booting the 64bit version?
yes
just wnat to rule out any obvious issues i might be seening
hi
what motherboard?
unreleased board
What CPU?
socketF opterons
guess i'll try to rule out a bad stick
everything works fine with only 128GB installed
CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G is set?
I have a script that bans people if they fail ssh lockings, it's timed, so you decide how long. (They get iptables locked out of the machine)
ah hah
hmm
are you still there?
I'll try building a new one, though I'd expect all the RAM simply owuldn't be avaialble
kernel si hanging right away
Miravlix, I think this link Puschkin sent me will do the same.. (still reading)
thanks ofr idea
there are many ways to do this: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Index:HOWTO#Services, search for SSHD
how should i get rid of old stuff if I don't prune?
also, are you required to symetrically populate all of the CPUs?
DrChandra, himem64g is x86 only i believe
hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
umm, him Celtic
hi(
*
stupid keyboard…
I need a gento install CD with PHP compiled on it… what would be the easiest method to accomplish this?
vertigoacid
why stupid ?
I used different burned 2007.0-r1 images (which worked before), different memory modules and ide cables and cdrom drivers and memory slots.. even with noapic acpi=off, problem doesn't go away. What could it be?
because I type on it poorly

i ran out of ideas long ago. the only thing i can think of is a hardware problem or an incompatibility issue. does an older livecd work?
or _any_ livecd?
you type on it poorly but me i dont like?
i'm about to test an older one yeah

http://www.pettingers.org/code/sshblack-notes.html - this is the one I use and it seems like the author has good plans for it still
with php on it? just the distfiles?

I cam select 64GB with Opteron
ah ha, thanks vertigoacid, I'll give that a try, thanks, Supprised I didn't find that already
whatever I use I want the option to only block tempararly for certain things (I don't want to get locked out of my own system)
bexamous: would it have anything to do with the memory model? flat vs sparse vs whatever? i dunno if that relates back to the hardware or not
Perhaps you should just disable password authentication?
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fail2ban, i used this one a while ago, works fine for your purpose, you can set a number of minutes to be banned
bexamous, try with various mem= (in mb) options to limit the max and see how far you can take it..
i can send u the rules i use…
Aah, never look at sshd logs, I'm offcourse under a spam attack as always.
you're looking to ssh-ban for brute forcing right?
no
hello does there exist such a thing as a DSL/DSLAM emulator in gentoo?
_AxS_, yes
UncleRemus, .. love yer name
none that i know of..
u like zappa too?
if you can find one for linux then it's easy to install though
You can whitelist
Never use automatic tools without whitelists
can i keep my home partition from ubuntu when i install gentoo?
nod
or should i just save it.. tucked away somewhere
I've found that there aren't many packages left behind that don't actually need to be there. Usually old packages get removed when you update. if you really need to remove some, just do it manually
Hungmanmoojoo, yeah sure you can keep it i would just remove the .whatever folders with all of your preferences
http://rafb.net/p/rgUPIN90.html — plus i have a perl script that auto-adds ip addresses to the SSH_Bans chain, based on number of attempts that are logged.
k dislo , but if i dont mount it as home i could just get the files i want from there?
as long as you don't overwrite it you're fine.
i would like to keep my logs for gaim for example
you can mount it wherever. even as /home again
Where is the world file found?
send over that perl script
yeah,.. but your shure it wont be problems with old configs?
anyone have any experience with laptop docks?
..u sure? it's ugly…
I don't think you can use 256GB with your processor. 64GB may be the limit. I was comparing with some IA64 machines, but they use a different memory model.
