So Ive been trying to install gentoo on my test system for about four days now I wanted to do it from the command

i'm setting up a gentoo workstation on pc and a gentoo workstation on xbox just to test how compatible they are with each other i know i can get help here with gentoo but there isn't a irc for gentoox or it's at least empty.. do you guys mind if i ask questions about gentoox since it's suppose to work just the same as gentoo?

gentoos, just ask

ok

erm, I'm going to shave and shower, and take off to take that app to that guy.. and then install gentoo later.

it's just that i have tried before and didn't state that at the beginning and people got upset but thanks

localhost ~ # rmdir 'trash:/0-polyester-1.0.1'

trash:/0-polyester-1.0.1: No such file or directory

bercik, ?!?
wrong path

which is ok?

rmdir doesn't use KDE filesystem drivers (kioslaves)

basically i have some usb devices and such that i want to swap between them

it should be ~/.Trash/0-polyester-wtf

well, erm why did I waste my nice maxell cd for the gentoo live cd, when I just should of got the minimal install cd then

one is a tera station and the other is a usb dvd-rw

gentoos, should work - Xbox is just x86

let me pull up opera, for IRC, and I will get thet minimal cd

rmdir '~/.Trash/0-polyester-1.0.1'
~/.Trash/0-polyester-1.0.1: No such file or directory

or was that ~/Trash
I'd have to check

ok

the freedesktop spec (assuming KDE uses that)

hey i have vlc installed, but when i run vlc the OSD doesn't show up. i get taken to "Remote control interface" instead. what gives?

wat
wait*
hey astinus
AStorm, *
the gentoo linux installer, in text mode, is actually better than the gtk mode, on the live cd

gentoos, the only different things are the bootloader and the kernel
Zoo, it is

can't I use ext3 for boot?

but still cheap
Zoo, you can

yeah i know that but people still get upset when i ask in here

AStorm, , I mean the option on the live cd though, it has a text mode installer as well

gentoos, weird

its better than its gtk option.. on the live cd* they have 2 options on the live cd is what i"m sayin

Zoo, I know
You don't have to tell me :-)

yeah thanks for being cool about it a storm

nice.. just created partition 100 for boot
now to create.. 2048 for swap

Why would you need that much?

hiberation

vmware workstation for linux
smile

hibernation*

Zoo, hmm
that can use files too

and just got 6
;-)

Zoo, smae here
same*

Zoo, and how much ram?

btw. this is going alot better, with the text mode. see I'm used to that, especially because of debian net installs

If you don't need to hibernate, just create a swap file later on
simpler and more efficient

I have 1 GB ddr2 of cosair 533 mhz, and 1 512 ddr2 some bullcrap hardware from acer, used hyndai or something
acer uses cheap ram, so I put some better in it, but I"m getting a nice mobile workstatin this year

Zoo, I didn't ask for the makes, thanks

Mmmm cosair memory

maybe 1 of those hp's with the quadro fx's or lenevo's
1500 + something AStorm

i hate my lenevo… it feels so cheap

I've noticed that since June, my apache logs are now being gz'd on a weekly basis instead ofa monthly one. What could have started this?

Zoo, Hmm, that should be more than enough for 6 VMs as it goes

I haven't made any changes that would do this

You don't really need that much swap

I'm tellin ya.. this partitioning is going way so much better with the text mode option :-)

if there's something i can't abide by it is apostrophes being used in PLURALS

its not freezing up and bullcrap ;-)
AStorm, ,
vmware workstation 6 build

Zoo, it's still a lot

I dont' run 6 virtual machines in it..
thats what I want..
and I know its alot

Zoo, you don't need any swap for these actually

but I know what I need it for
well meh
so.. / next?

Mhm
or /home

so what's going on with the trash?

bercik, here it's ~/.Trash

so far, I got.. 2 primary ext3, 100mb for boot, 3 primary, linux-swap 2046mb
and now to do.. / and /home

that's what freedesktop spec says
Zoo, do you need to hibernate?

erm

hey astorm

so no ideas on my log comment?

suspend at least

when you get a chance can you tell me what this is all about? http://gentoox.shallax.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=49

I looked in the ChangeLog for Metalog and it's just minor things

Zoo, hmm, STR or to disc (AKA hibernation)

crap, I got to go shave and shower real quick and take off lol
ucrap, I got to go shave and shower real quick and take off lol/u
its no big deal really.. I just want to create… / and /home

lol

can you do frequency scaling on a athlon x2 ?

and then I will have.. 100 mb for boot a swap , / and /home

i dont know how to compute that info…

gentoos, it's quite rudimentary

people can you figure up 7GB in MB for me plz

it says you have to have certain modules installed

Is anyone here using the gEDA suite and ngspice here for circuit simulation? I could use some pointers…

is that the only way to mount my usb dvd drive?

gentoos, it means you must load usb storage module
and that's all

okay nm I did it
7168

instead of cdrtools, use cdrkit

i'm sure i can emerge a program that will auto mount my drive right?

newer and better

hi, how can i remove gnome totally?

i want to use k3b

gentoos, the driver should be built by default genkernel setup, yep

alexwait, using logrotate?

k3b will pull cdrtools in by default, yes

I think so

the burner should be autodetected

hi

just mask cdrtools and use cdrkit

svn, version 1.4.4 (r25188) fixed the segfault issue (after an Apache restart).

how can i remove gnome totally?

so what is my 1st step?

[tla],

gentoos, hmm, emerge k3b
and it should work :P

i dont have arch setup

do you think it's because of rotatelog?

thats what it says

check out the USE flags for k3b before you emerge it, there's lots of little optional stuff

&& ifconfig eth0 up…..is there a way to do it permanently or at startup?

- in gnome

you need to read the handbook.

how did that get there?

i would love to

alexwait, i thinks its probably because of the settings in /etc/logrotate.conf

Onay, not too easy, you can try emerge -C gnome

shall i google it?

then emerge -p –depclean
check the list

/etc/conf.d/net is where you need to set the mac

hey astinus
AStorm, ** argh

and if there are gnome packages only, then emerge –depclean
Zoo, hmm?

yep. that's it!

with all dependencies

Skunky, along with the ip, broadcast and netmask addresses?

Onay, that should remove the deps too

sorry I messed up on nicks, geesh

This channel is large enough, so that one has to use 4 letters for tabcomplete

read net.example, i'm pretty sure it covers setting a mac

ok

I really have to implement MRU tabcomplete in some IRC client :P

I have to shave, wicked fast, and shower, and take off on the bus, but later when I get back I will finish this, and then later on, when I get good at learning gentoo's system and how its setup, and handles packages and so forth, I will use the minimal install cd,

not always, but if you've got a tab-complete that isn't broken in the first place…

would be nice and probably very effective

have a pleasant day everyone ^_^

what's the option for rmdir to remove all 'lower' directiories?

-r

doesn't work

er, no, rm -r, rmdir only does empty directories

You could use
find /some/where -type d | xargs rmdir
might work

that'd still only rm empty dirs tho

what program works with full directiories?

bercik, rm -r
or even rm -R

thanks you
works

Skunky, so adding another line for that interface should be enough? mac_eth0="my spoofed mac address"

in theory, yes. in practice. well. conf.d/net has SO many different options, who knows if they all work. (:

alright, ill give it a try, thank you very much for the help

guys any idea about why trying executing this program ( http://rafb.net/p/0xVBgg20.html ) simple compiled with gcc -c -o nameexec nameprogram i got "Cannot Execute Binary File" ?

n0on3, whos key are you trying to crack, and why would you think that someone here would want to help you crack it?

eth01, hey good for you
you banned me from a channel! Ha your the biggest moron I've ever met.

broken, please don't bring that here

dcoats, i'm checking the security of my home-test server by trying cracking the ssh access, btw that's not a problem of cracking, but just a compiler issue i'm too newbie to solve

as a regular user if i use gphoto2 i get a segmentation fault, as root it works fine.

hey can I reload the config of X without restarting it?

anyone know why this might be? i am a member of the usb group already

because I have a burning session going on which I don't want to cancel

dcoats, i just start it up and now i'm jrying having some experience in how secure can it be, all there

LOL, i have a .trashinfo removed, how to remake it ?

what is .trashinfo?

what are you testing? the strength of your ssh keys?

trash file, that controls a trash

ah

bercik, touch .trashinfo

hm hence the name.. I just never saw one on my system

can i remake it ?

where do they usually reside?

bercik, i bet if you logout and back in it will recreate it for you

maybe..

does someone know a way how to apply new settings to a RUNNING X without restarting it?

we will see, one moment

davidL, i'm on first experience with ssh service, so i'm just testing how easy can it be to exploit.. i'd like to have some tests with very simple to very hard keys, so i found this program that seems ale to bruteforce the keys but it didn't run ^^"

it's limited.. but i think you use xmod
err xmodmap

Anyone using Banshee?

7 GB is good enough for / right?

You had a right!

hmm well I changed some stuff in the driver section of my graphic card

thanks you man

lares, , I do

since i'm not a C programmer i'm not friendly with the compiler, i just need a little tip about how to solve that problem

gotta restart x windows then

i thought you had to leave

hm…
k then I'll wait for my burning to finish

after I'm done with installing gentoo, I'm going to work on compiling it into gentoo, because I as well want to get tao-opengl configured.. so I can configure the fleow plugin

Any problems with ripping?

?

well, brushin my teath now

if anything, openssh won't be exploited via it's keys but rather the daemon itself

Zoo, probably.. I'm hanging on at 500mb Of course I have several other partitions

guess what, partitioning done
bit, lol

more specificly recognizing inserted CDs.
I have dbus running

there are several things you can do to harden openssh, such as not allowing root and listening on a certain address

how do I enable mplayer to play from /dev/dvd as a normal user? right now it says libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading

But I run Skeleton Gnome background stuff, with Fluxbox WM

davidL, it means that if someone can recover the key he has just the chance to log in but no access, right ?

bttv0: IRQ lockup, cleared int mask [bits: HSYNC OFLOW PPERR]

n0on3, and install denyhosts

no, it just means that if you use a decent key size it could take a cracker years to break the key

( thx for the tip dcoats, app-admin/denyhosts in merging )

denyhosts is big junk
I allways locked myself out and then had no further access to my jboss server hosting

owned

yes this happened several times…

davidL, what's the rate to crack a key ? i mean, something like time/size ?

the newer versions also allow for central hostlists to be shared under each other

DJGummik1h, hahah, thats not that its junk, its that you didnt set it up properly

( sry for bad english btw .. )

can even do port knocking

and then somone managed to block most of my LAN block due to appearantly even more stupidity than I showed..
yeah dvd is burned
cya soon

cya DJGummik1h

unfortunately I forgot to put irssi into screen…

can anyone provide a time/size mesure about cracking of ssh keys ?

keys or passwords?

keys

like a MITm attack?

if you use a 1024 bit RSA key no one will ever break it

davidL, well it's not sure, new factorization algorithm are always faster

well, it can be broken, but a bruteforce on a large keysize would be somethign in the "hundreds of years" range

yes
the cracker will die of age before he breaks the key
or she

it
heh

there are MUCH better ways to attack ssh then trying to break the key

if you use 1024 bit RSA keys they'll come over to your house to shoot you through the head

You can always use 4096-bit key, just for fun.

davidL, such as ?

overhead? whats overhead?

i already have a working gui what will xserver do for me if i install it?

Hi, my sound stopped working all of a sudden. i can see the mixers- no muting. alsa is ok, just can't hear any sounds

well if you have it set to allow protocol 1 that is very exploitable, also weak passwords, insecure connections, etc

gentoos, xserver ?

Man in the middle attack, attack the passwords
etc

could this have happened cause i emerged -uDav –newuse world?

*************
why isn't XV working on my Laptop?
it used to before!

yes i came to a screen that askes if i want to install xserver

davidL, i'm really new to it, so plz if u want me to understand, speak simple , what's protocol 1, ( just rtfm ? )

why try to break in through the door with armed guards in it when theres an unlocked screen door ’round back?

lol lymeca has a nice quit message

/dev/dsp?

the ssh you want to use is SSH 2, 1 is older, insecure, and used for legacy support

that should work

davidL, got it

/dev/mem sounds more interesting though

can someone perhaps help me with my XV issue?

/dev/dsp

heh

ishino, i can run the command- although no sound.

lol it's then reading your bzImage to you aloud

anyone know what xserver is?

so what about secureless of the second one ? is there any known volnerabilities that should be fixed ?

damn skippy

why use bzcat when cat works, too?

as the old quote says "It's like hearing god!"

the server that manages the graphical part of linux

gentoos, there is no package called xserver
gentoos, what exactly is it that you want?

so nobody willing to help me with my XV problem?

because then you only hear god compressed

You're probably looks for the xorg-x11 package

oh i was just wondering if i need it installed

me too
only if you want fancy eyecandy

oh no

d

i'm on xfce

well then you already Have a running Xserver

ok cool
thats what i thought

you are kinda new to fedora linux is that possible?

yeah i'm kind-of new to this distro

welcome to the best Distribution for the best OS of the world

i was just weirded out when it asked if i wanted to use xserver because i thought i was

who did ask you?

some funky terminal stuff i was trying out no big deal now

i pray hope thats not a bug- the sound borking. although, could have been the power blackout some time ago that caused a hardware issue.
i pray hope thats not a bug- the sound borking. although, could have been the power blackout some time ago that caused a hardware issue.

thanks man

imagine having to fumble with sound drivers every time something you reboot

yagami, is your audio module loaded?

dcoats, fixed it- i don't know how exactly- just executed alsaconf and its good now

DJGummikuh, whats the problem?

XV doesn't work properly
not at all

then either your memory is empty (unlikely ) or the sound is broken

I'm already tepmering around with my xorg.conf to enable some options of my ati card
I even got xvinfo to recognize a adaptor but now I have even worse image which updates fairly slwo
and also when I play a video (or run glxgears) and quit it, parts of the image host won't disappear even though the process is gone

latest drivers?
i hate ati cards

yes/yes

what card?

mobility radeon 9600/9700

strange as my girlfriends laptop has that gfx and video was the only thing that i could get working well

mine used to work quite well as well
I don't know since when I started having problems

what did you do?

I sent it in
because it was broken

and they dropped it for you

and got it back with a replaced (but nevertheless identical) motherboard

are you using mplayer?

No I don't believe there is a hardware issue
yes
I somehow just borked my entire system

what laptop?

Samsung P35

does fgl_fglxgears work?

one more thing

Emerging (1 of 2) games-fps/nexuiz-2.2.3 to /

waiting for lock on /var/tmp/portage/games-fps/.nexuiz-2.2.3.portage_lockfile

yes my accelleration works

and can't lockate

another emerge is still running then

aw…i restarted a X server, emerge must be running ;P
thank you

how can I mount something for a normal user? (i.e. I dont want to have to run armock in root so I can add files to my ipod

bercik, if it not running and your sure because you have checked a 'ps aux' then you can 'rm /var/tmp/portage/games-fps/.nexuiz-2.2.3.portage_lockfile

put the partition you want to mount into /etc/fstab and add "users" to it
you understand how the image looks here?

DJGummikuh, cant get ipod to auto moust so doing it by hand

if the camera moves, I see a diagonal line and I see that not the entire picture is updated at once but in several segments
unfortunately I can't screenshot that since this is a driver issue it seems

DJGummikuh, do u have the right options enabled in your kernel
mtrr etc…

hmm
I believe so

do u have jumpy audio?

yes among other things
the cpu useage goes through the roof

try running mplayer with -nosound see if that helps

mtrr = y

dcoats,
oops

not at all

dcoats, it doesn't work
dcoats, it doesn't wor

lol

oops

continue and you'll get kicked

dcoats, i'll send you the xorg logs

GNUtoo, what doesnt work?

GNUtoo, paste them to a paste bin

the funny thing is that after the video finished, I still have a small line of it on the screen

dcoats, the glx of my nvidia proprietary driver

which disappears when I pull a window over it

dcoats, the legacy ones

that is so stupid

what arch are you on DJGummikuh ?

GNUtoo, please http://rafb.net/paste /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log

x86
and ~x86
widely mixed
I use the ~ ati drivers

how do you skin opera's menu bar?

I wasn't even thinkin.. I should of just used my Acronis Disk director Suite to create the partitions.. lol.. so much easier

it looks like windows classic skin.

thats what I'm going to do.. be back in a few

dcoats, http://rafb.net/p/knkHXb81.html and http://rafb.net/p/YybNpT25.html

DJGummikuh, whats your mplayer?
is it stable?
do u get any messages in dmesg?

is it very difficult to setup a vpn on linux?

yagami, depends on how you choose to set it up…the basic one is easy

GNUtoo, remove Load "GLcore"

1.0.20070622-r1

DJGummikuh, try running mplayer with '-msglevel 9'

dcoats, it doesn't change anything

you restarted x that quick?

dcoats, by the way my desktop is ugly(green) and my resolution is 800×600
dcoats, yes i restarted xdm

unknown option

dcoats, i command the machine over ssh
dcoats, so i can chat while restarting Xorg

DJGummikuh, '-msglevel all=9'

Buona sera gente!

w0Pr, ciao…lo sai che ce un channel gentoo italiano?

ciao GNUtoo

w0Pr, perche cui non so si ce molta gente che parla l'italiano
w0Pr, #gentoo-it

GNUtoo, you want DefaultDepth 24 —- in your screen section right under Monitor "Monitor0"

does anyone know a good auto mounting program for usb hdd's and dvd' burners that takes little resources?
i'm running xfce
and only have 64 mb ram

GNUtoo, I would also remove all the Subsections accept the Depth 24 one .

is astorm still in here?

dcoats, with DefaultDepth "24" it fails to start X

AStorm,

GNUtoo, that doesnt seem right
GNUtoo, that card will do that without problem

anyone?

GNUtoo, pastebin that log

dcoats, ok

Are there similarly popular and powerfull editors besides emacs and vi for console?

dcoats, http://rafb.net/p/XuQzMX81.html

GNUtoo, im thinking you did something wrong
GNUtoo, http://biggy.easyshellz.com/gentoo/etc/X11/xorg.conf
GNUtoo, see that screen section
GNUtoo, just change 1280×1024 to 1024×768

dcoats, i made an error between screen and monitor…lol

Does ccache cache header files?

DJGummikuh, try mplayer -v -v -v
DJGummikuh, the more '-v's the more info you get

so basically i dont want to have to edit fstab and stuff to mount my usb dvd burner and i'm looking for a small program that will do it for me… any ideas?

dcoats, ok thanks by the way it does the same error with screen than with monitor

vim, joe, nano, pico, jed… tho all subject to the opinion of whoever happens to using it.

and mc

GNUtoo, look at the log, it will tell you where your error is
GNUtoo, compare the xorg.conf to the one i pasted you

dcoats, your xorg.conf doesn't work…i'll send you the log

does anyone happen to know if nfast SSL cards are supported in gentoo?
or where i could find out?
they appear to list 64 bit gentoo on their supported os's
but maybe there's a non-official 32 bit version

I am trying to do a clean install from the minimal CD but DNS does not seem to be functioning after booting from the CD. I get an address from dhcp and all of the dhcp options. I can also ping all nodes on the lan and can ping ip addresses on the internet, just not names.

/etc/resolv.conf needs a valid dns server

dcoats, http://rafb.net/p/MVVhen88.html

it has 4 of them in it

well, at least joe nano/pico and jed seem to be less powerful compared to vi(m) or emacs considering plugins and so on - dont they?

alternately, can anyone recommend an ssl certificates hosting hardware card for use on gentoo?

/etc/resolv.conf was filled in by DHCP

pico is limited, by design. nano… not so much. joe and jed are both extensible with plugins, so it's more a matter of somebody writing the plugins, rather than lacking the functionality.

hello

GNUtoo, that means you left out core pointer

well, if you're on the cd, and resolv.conf was filled in by dhcp, and you can't get things to lookup by name but can get to them by ip address, your dns servers are broken.

dcoats, yes but i added the mouse and keyboard section from my last xorg.conf and it doesn't seems to work

GNUtoo, you need to specify where your mouse is

i see, yet, considering whats in portage - yes i am lazy - vim and emacs seem to have more plugins available out of the box. i've just been told to read about "editor wars" and this lead to the statement that "The two largest camps are those favoring vi and those favoring Emacs." which means i'll decide between the two i guess.

dcoats, /dev/input/mice isn't ok?

the dns servers work fine for the 30 other PC's on the network

GNUtoo, you copied mine
Option "Device" "/dev/psm0"
use yours
GNUtoo, all you needed from mine was screen section

dcoats, thanks a lot now it works

things are as you expect them now?

dcoats, yes i have 3d acceleration…now i will enable compositing…

GNUtoo, have fun

dcoats, thanks a lot

what editor you use is a matter of choice. if you support *nix systems in general, you have to have at least a basic knowledge of vi, because many commercial *nix variants only have vi installed. what you use, when you're programming, writing e-mail, and whatever else you need a text editor for, that's up to you, and whatever you're most comfortable with. many people don't NEED all the things vi and emacs can do, they're perfectly happy with
pico.

sure - i'll learn the basics of both and decide then. emacs and vi seem to be kind of a must-know anyway, vi for sure, as you said.

I've been using and supporting *nix systems for um.. 12+ years. I still, to this day, can't get out of emacs without going to another terminal window and killing it. (:

hehe
but i bet you know vi basics at least

of course. i can even talk somebody through hand-editing a hp-ux kernel config in vi over the phone. painful, but doable. you would hear me saying this like "ok, hit the escape key untill it beeps at you. no, keep hitting it till it beeps. yeah, see, told you, it beeps"

I'm back
sorry I was afk, my GF called me
ok what shall I do with these 7 tons of output both -msglevel all=9 and -v -v -v give me?

GF? you're not allowed to have any of those.

says who?
GF not being geforce but girlfriend

geeks can't have GF's.

ahem

I'm no geek
lol

thats BS.. but whatever

BS?

crap.

ah lol

I'

dcoats, it says that GLX is missing and that it can't find RGB GLX visual///

thing?

Whoops! I fat fingerd my keyboard..

DJGummikuh, try and find the problem

i've been known to do that, from time to time. usually on my laptop keyboard. did you have a question?
why are you kicking postfix, anyway?

sounds familiar, although i'm running linux since half the time you support unices and - well - i cant do it for vi and the hpux kernel config :-)

Skunky, geeks have 'internet' girlfriends

it wont work right.. and i dont have time to fix it

those kind don't call on the telephone. (: they IM.

stop spreading lies
and thats coming from a girl who only dates geeks

Nope, I was just going to say: I think I foudn the root of my problem with my PCMCIA card… I won't find out until I get home and can look but perhaps it's not showing up because I have PnP=yes in my bios. Too bad I can't check that via ssh
I think I foudn the root of my problem with my PCMCIA card… I won't find out until I get home and can look but perhaps it's not showing up because I have PnP=yes in my bios. Too bad I can't check that via ssh/b

geek girls are rare and go against all the rules.

dcoats, all what i have is /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt

poop

GNUtoo, thats correct

pcmcia cards should show up in lspci

It does, but it doesn't show up when I #ifconfig -a

don't have pcmcia-utils installed?

but you have to admit its hard to find decent geek girls

dcoats, so why doesn't he find the RGB?

oops, pcmciautils

I think I do… How can I tell?

try to emerge it, and see if it says it'll reinstall or install. (:
and NOT pcmcia-cs, that's the "old" stuff, pcmciautils is for any kernel 2.6.18-ish or newer.

true .. but it happens.. so to say it doesnt is a lie.
btrue .. but it happens.. so to say it doesnt is a lie. /b

or .13, or something like that.

hi. does anyone know a good replacement for firestarter? since it will no longer work with K2.6.21, I want to get used to somthing else before I upgrade. I don't want anything too complicated

GNUtoo, eselect opengl set nvidia

yes, .13 I'm emerging it right now. (3 new) it sayss

mx-zoom: shorewall

ok.

So, now how do I use it? heh

hard doesnt imply impossible ;P

hey guys

I'm about to set my laptop up the bomb
stupid thing

up the bomb?

without the utils installed, udev won't assign resources to a pcmcia card, so they'll not work. you don't do anything, really. udevstart to make it re-read the rules, pccardctl eject/insert to fake an eject/insert of the card, and on insert it should load the driver(s) or complain in dmesg that it can't find the driver it wants

now I enabled overlay which enabled xv but now the performance with videos is even worse than before!
aybabtu

dcoats, it doesn't change anything…

anybody knows a easy way to access my partitions in "My Computer" ?

?!?

try going to the "my home"

um. this isn't windows….

oh wait.

iaheiuaeh

are they mounted?

i know that's not win

hehe

you are aybabtu?

?
you don't know aybabtu?

yeah in another channel

mount -t ntfs or something

i asked where you that person

lo

@all: I know its not the right place, but I don't know whom else to ask. A friend of mine lost a FAT partition by formatting it with NTFS. Does anybody know a good (and maybe free) recovery tool?

GNUtoo, try glxinfo as root and see if its any different

?!?
no I'm not the person
but aybabtu is a shortcut
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_your_base_are_belong_to_us

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

oh i know a person with that name sorry

guys, how to uninstall every dependances of the packages NetBeans ?

hehe
happens

are you trying to access your windows partition?

for i can access my partitions, i go in mount point (as /mnt)
i want access inside Computer
LadyNikon, i dont have win partition

well get yourself a screwdriver and open your computer up

how do you emerge ebuilds you've downloaded if the emerge /path/to/ebuild syntax doesn't work?

dcoats, no it's not…at the end of the text there is even a segmentation fault

ok so .. you are trying to access what then?

put it into an overlay

hi

LadyNikon, my backup partition

is that parition mounted?

yes

how can i install gentoo from livecd minimal iso. i read the handbook but i cant
can anyone help me please

live cd and minimal cds are different snake

with the handbook ?

what's so funny about that? ;-(

me what the hell si wrong with my card

i have minimal cd
how can i do

read the handbook again ?

then you should be able to start the install

GNUtoo, pastbin the output of emerge -pv nvidia-legacy-drivers xorg-server

i just want how i put a beauty link in nautilus (computer:///)

when you put the disk in does it boot?

So I've been trying to install gentoo on my test system for about four days now. I wanted to do it from the command line with no installer program because it seems you get a much more custom install that way, but I haven't been able to make it work. I broke down today and am using the gui installer from the live cd. Will I be able to go back and do things like recompile the kernel or will that hose my install?

a link to /mnt/backup

yes it boots and i type gentoo. but i do not know how to install

you should be able to just put the bath in

dcoats, do you prefer equery files ?

ok

put the bath in? ^^

GNUtoo, na, not necessary

the manual tells you step by step how to start the intall

dcoats, http://rafb.net/p/506eqA84.html

can you give me the link please

this stupid ati card of mine makes me go loco!!!

LadyNikon, how i make it?

i think i just tried it but do not started

__FGLTexMgrAllocMem failed!!
waaarg!

what did you try and what processor do you have?
how did you mount your partion
and can you see it?
when you type mount

i have a core 2 duo and tried start-installer or something like this

How can I check if I use the right charset locale?

i do not remember exactly

k3b complains about this when I start…

DJGummikuh are you frglx or free software drivers because mesa 7 is out…

fglrx

guys, how to uninstall every dependances of a package ?

mesa didn't work for me as well
had baad performance

ok so snake you are using the x86 handbook correct?

DJGummikuh, ah so i don't know well frglx…sorry

yes

LadyNikon, i think that you aren't undestand me

i read about it in a GWN you might want to look that up
hmm too bad

from this month ?

I am trying my best..
ok.

there hasn't been a GWN in 3 month afaik

what was the first command you tried?

ahh
forget it

yeah the last one ….

no not that one
one some back

i think installer-start or something like this
but i am not sure

it sounds like to me.. you are trying to access a partition

just look them through there was a script which was for exactly that purpose

No one knows of charset locales ?

then you aren't using the handbook. please, use the handbook.

a partition that is already mounted. is this correct?

allthough it only worked when you altered something BEFORE you installed the package you now want to get rid off

GNUtoo, can you pastebin the error for me again?

give an exact error message, and somebody might be able to help you.

LadyNikon, i obtain to access
obtain to read and write

ppost me a link to what you are looking at.

dcoats, ok the error in beryl-manager or in glxinfo?

i want…

glxinfo
GNUtoo, glxinfo

LadyNikon, do u know the comuter:/// in nautilus?

you want to do this as root or the user.
i dont use nautilus
i use konqueror

=\

GNUtoo, how about xorg.0.log again now that you have a working xorg

forget ir so
but some so thanks

http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20070409-newsletter.xml
thx

yw

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2 you should be at the middle of the page here.
granted i usually start on chapter 3
in order to read and write to a partition as a user you need to have the permissions
i am guessing that the parition you are trying to access is root only.

hello

and sadly I am not good at changing permissions on mounted partitions
hi johan

is possible to connect remotely to a X server and start an opengl program using local DRI?

dcoats, i have found the problem…the option Option "Composite" "enable" in Section "Extensions" trigger the problem…
dcoats, so how should i enable compositing…

hi

dcoats, without this option beryl-manager doesn't return an error but i don't have the special effects…

Anyone know how I can set amarok up to connect to di.fm ?

i need help, with pmount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 i get Error: invalid file system name 'ntfs-3g'
i have sys-fs/fuse and ntfs3g installed
and i can mount it as root

GNUtoo, im not sure that you can use xcomposite with legacy-drivers hold on

i tried to post in my country's channel, but i got no luck

is ntfs-3g a kernel module?

no

how do I extract a .img file?

Gridmark, no but fuse is

gotcha

yes, and it's loaded successfully

could it possibly be a permissions issue as root can mount it, but not a user

first try to mount it

KWhat, did
KWhat, I'd rather not copy from it though

a gentoo developer told me it can be a fuse problem

you need to mount it to copy it

or can you mount it once as root with permissions so a user can rw to it? (I'm assuming is a replacement so you can write to ntfs properly)

KWhat, alright, I'll see what I can do, thanks

what fs type you try mounting it as

KWhat, I did it as auto

the second one

try iso9660

anyone using pidgin and noticing that if you *offline* feature is buggy

Is there any way to change the premission of a entire set of files? (almsot 2k files)

KWhat, auto worked, its an ext3

chmod whatever /path/to/files/*

what does the use flag objc do ?

ohhh

does it just add support for compiling objective C ?

then you should be able to pull the files you need out

KWhat, yeah, I just want them all

that will do everything in that directory, if you want to recurse directories, you can give it the -R switch

Does my thought make snese that PnP=yes could be whats wrong with my card? If it shows up in lspci does that mean that PnP isn't scrweing up?
Or did I just talk in circles?

Gridmark, recurse directorys is like /here/recurse right?

i have problems only as common user, all correct as root

either way
/path/to/files/* or /path/to/files
both will work

kk

GNUtoo, have you tried nvidia-drivers already and they didnt work?
GNUtoo, what made you go straight to nvidia-legacy-drivers

make install in /usr/src/linux keeps making 2.6.20-r8 instead of 21-r3

dcoats, my card is a geforce 4

GNUtoo, your card is still on the nvidia-drivers supported list for 9755

hey guys, i want to output the output from emerge –sync into a text file (portagesync.txt) to check for errors, what command would i use to do this?

?

GNUtoo, im not sying 100% that it will work

portagesync.txt

GNUtoo, i have some gf4's that do and some that don't

thanks, Gridmark

yup

umm

dcoats, i'll tried and once it worked and once it didn't find the card

my make install in /usr/src/linux keeps making 2.6.21

FYI, you can do that for any command to pipe it's output to a file, but doing that will overwrite the file. if you want to append to it use

2.6.20*
not 21
I need to upgrade to 2.6.21

ahh, thanks

hi everybody. does anyone know how to find installed masked packages in portage?

GNUtoo, i really don't think you can use beryl with the old legacy drivers
GNUtoo, i could be wrong but
GNUtoo, id try the 9755-r1 driver see if it recognizes your gpu

dcoats, ok

who can use ntsf as user successfully?

ErhardtMundt, you need ntfs-3g
its much easier and powerful

i got it
but i can't use it as user

anyone know of an overlay for BackupPC v3+? portage only has 2.1.2

check the /etc/fstab options
I don't know them precisely, but man fstab will surely help you
(or googling)

the point is i don't want to use fstab

ssmtp: Cannot open mail:25 ..why is it doing that? ssmtp doesn't need a local mail server
it won't let me emerge sendmail with ssmtp installed anyways

ErhardtMundt then you need sudo, I can't help you any further

Anyone know why I would get the following error when I infact DO have automatic module loading enabled in my kernel? Unable to load needed module: ath_rate_sample; no support for automatic module loading3Error loading module "ath_rate_sample"

thank you debaser

hi, is it possible to copy the livecd to harddrive and boot it as-is (so I can run many pcs with one live cd)

Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.21-gentoo-r3_ec/video/nvidia.ko): No such device

GNUtoo, nvidia-drivers-1.0.9631-r1
GNUtoo, sorry

dmesg

GNUtoo, http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-a.html
GNUtoo, it says GeForce4 440 Go 0×0174 and GeForce4 420 Go 0×0175 are supported by 96x

Pol____, http://rafb.net/p/hzubJv92.html

ErhardtMundt you're welcome
does anyone know how to find installed masked packages in portage?

masked by what?

package.unmask

KlrSpz by anything

and i believe portage tells you where to look if it's masked
debaser, either in /etc/portage/package.mask or /etc/portage/package.keywords
depends on what it's masked by though
s/package.mask/package.unmask

KlrSpz I want to know what packages are installed and masked

is there any vncviewer that will work in console, ie no X

KlrSpz because before /etc/portage/package.keywords I installed masked packages with the deprecated "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=" before emerge command

right
hmm.. i'm not in gentoo right now, but i think you sould be able to do "emerge -pe world | grep "~"
might need to escape the tilde, not sure

ok how do i make a initrd.gz file

Does anyone know of any good Maya referrences?

KlrSpz I'll try it out

jasperhax0r, what are you using it for, just splash image?

ok there's a problem here

*I'm going to
XD

gentoo-sources is 2.6.21
but when I do make install in /usr/src/linux
it compiles 2.6.20

jumbix, ls -al /usr/src/linux

remove the symlink

jumbix, symlink point at 2.6.20

Keith-BlindUser, ping

oh

what are the correct chmod settings for a home directory?

activate the symlinc USE flag if you like
for the gentoo-sources package

dcoats, it works with 96x but beryl-manager doesn't give error and doesn't start the effects

symlink

i've hosed my default gentoo PS1 variable.. can someone paste theirs, if you're still using the default 'gentoo' one?

jumbix, if you want it to automatically switch the symlinks for you , just add the symlink USE flag

yes, symlink

they are what you want them to be

hi

sup?

Hello

so

im trying to make a bootable linux on an old hard drive, and the instructions for tinygentoo say to make initramfs but the file is going to be way too big for it to fit on this hard disk, but im thinking initrd will be smaller

usually rwxr-x-r-x or something more restrictive

USE="symlink" make install?

ishino, gnome is buggered and i know its to do with file permissions

SwiftJim, language

ishino, what the code for that

dunno

not sure

NeddySeagoon, sorry

I'll soon find out

interest

755

jumbix activate the use flag when installing gentoo-sources package

ishino, thx

while installing gentoo i had to emerge portage, and it says two config files in /etc need updating–is this absolutely necessary for the installation?

jumbix you don't need to reinstall, but make sure you activate it so the next time it's automatically handled by portage

Haz, It depends what they are

heh
doesn't say

it's generally a good idea to follow the advice, one of them is probably make.conf.examples

Haz it will when you run etc-update

Haz find /etc -iname '._cfg????*'

ive drawn a blank and cant remember what that popular gtk based photo manager is. It may be included in gnome but i cant remember. Can anyone job my memory
err jog

ahh, there we have 'em, thanks guys

can someone that's still using the default gentoo prompt PS1 variable paste what their $PS1 is set to?

GNUtoo, add Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true" and Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true" to your Device section

zutme, eog is good for gnomelibs, but i prefer GQView

\[33[01;32m\]\h \[33[01;34m\]\W $ \[33[00m\]

thanks

im trying to make a bootable linux on an old hard drive, and the instructions for tinygentoo say to make initramfs but the file is going to be way too big for it to fit on this hard disk, but im thinking initrd will be smaller

KlrSpz it worked (anyway I don't have any masked installed package) thanks a lot

np

dcoats, they are inside the Xorg.conf

ur not gunna kill me are you?

so how do i make a initrd.gz?

GNUtoo, start beryl-manager from a terminal window and see what the problem is

lol, wrong window
gzip /path/to/files

dcoats, that's what i was doing…
dcoats, by the way in wich package is nvidia-xconfig?

nvidia-drivers
but you don't need xconfig
your x is already working
GNUtoo, so what does beryl-manager do ?

/boot/initramfs.igz

dcoats, it load a diamond on the top right of the screen, doesn't emit a message on the console and doesn't enable the effects

hmm.. dunno.. i was kinda pulling that out of my ass.. i'm looking online, and it looks like most ppl use genkernel to build an initrd

lol
genkernel

right?

GNUtoo, eneble beryl as window manager and select your window decorator, any more than that you should join #gentoo-xeffects or #beryl

Hello, I just wanted to know how can I burn an iso to a USB pen
I'm using Gentoo LiveCD

dcoats, i followed the howto of the wiki…

I wanted to burn OpenBSD while I'm installing stuff

does objcopy come with binutils or coreutils?

Anyone?
cdrecord doesn't work for pens

looks like binutils

burn an iso to a pen drive?

Yes, ishino

just extract it to it

Is it possible?
And it boots?

what does "burn to a pen drive" mean?

you also need a bootloader on it

hey gentoo, are you from opera europe?

Uhm…
Man, i'm just a noob
I know I can boot stuff from a USB pen
I thought I could burn
So what?

your motherboard must also support it

KlrSpz, most masters support booting from usb now, dont they?

I just got back, from putting my app in at O'reilly Auto Parts, and I really want to get to know gentoo, and be good at it, and help others as well and work together, but not just that, you see I can create whatever partitions I want on my disk using Acronis Disk Director Suite, because you see, I work with alot of software on my windows vlk as well, and mix etc. and its essential to me to keep that, however I do use vmware worksta
I am going to be wanting to know how to master source compiling

most yes

gentooNub? Extracting the iso to a pen makes it boot?

hey KlrSpz, I totally forgot all about my Acronis Disk Director Suite
but I am reading the gentoo handbook
for what to use for the install and stuff

gentoo, never done it, but I think it might work.. you should google: booting from a usb

Zoo-: are you an advertising agent for Acronis Disk Director Suite?

no, you'll need a bootloader (like LILO or GRUB) on pen-drive, and put the same boot-up stuff (kernel, initrd, etc) in the bootloader's configfile

Thanks
Allright, thanks

no mark
earlier I was just trying to configure some things, in the gentoo live cd. and I forgot all about my disk management software I use,
and heck no, I"m not trying to advertise at all
I erased debian, because I am tired of all the dang dependency issues, and I spent 8+ and more hours compiling- compiz-fusion into etch, but still issues with other dep, and I been told by many users.. to switch to gentoo

you know what this talk about booting from a usb is making me want to do.. put gentoo on my ipod so I can just plug it into any comp and boom got my system :P

should work

but you'd have to have some pretty liberal configurations

Frigolit, only thing is getting a new ipod to do it with mine is full.. (about 2 gigs left
bFrigolit, only thing is getting a new ipod to do it with mine is full.. (about 2 gigs left/b
:P

i'm gonna put the gentoo minimal cd (both x86 and amd64) on a flash-memory some day
easier to carry with you than a cd

humm all i need is vim, irssi, and links
:P

dang how long does it take to get through the book lol

oh and gcc/g++ :P

and screen

Zoo- to install it?

this is for install/rescue though

yes
I was really hoping to just go wtih the livecd latest I had burned, and I am going to use the text mode installer option in that.. the gtk has way too many bugs I Think

I have two separate X11 screens and I want to run a command FROM screen 0 or a tty and have it run on Screen 1

and is slower.. I was even seeing when I was in that option… creating partitions was alot easier, however I am just going to use.. my tools I use to manage my disk and operating systems,

Zoo- humm it will be a while to isntall gentoo the guide will go faster then you think thought.. :P

What do I preface it with? SCREEN=:1 %command% doesn't seem to work

DISPLAY=:1.0 command
like DISPLAY=:1.0 xterm

/etc/portage/package.keywords, it says thats an invalid atom, why?

well, I have done hundred installs of debian netinstall, so its not so bad

Zoo- yeah you basicly have to use the text based.. had the GUI crash on me like 8 times my first go

and many other systems.. its just that I"m tired of a system that gives me headaches, and won't let me compile what I want really

Why 1.0? What does the 0 mean?

after compiling can i remove /usr/src/*

I just hate how they include all those packages that slow yyour system down or fill it up.. I know everything that is on this system :P

i think it's ERVER.DISPLAY
or something like that

In that case I would want 0.1

ah, you're using dual-screen?

I only have 1 X11 server but 2 separate displays

I'm going to create.. /boot 100 MB, swap 2048, / for root and stuff, and /home

They are separate X11 screens

ah then that should be it

Yeah DISPLAY=:0.1 worked! Thanks!

on my Acer Aspire 3610, heck with debian, I just would do.. / swap, and /home

np

because I am going to install my vmware workstation 6 for linux , to /home/zoo/

humm what are the benefits of have a separate /home?
just secuirty?

that should be okay layout eh ?

jasperhax0r, you should keep you current kernel src,

gentooNub, you can have multip distros and all of them share the same /homes

well, good for backups.. security, and for what you want it for

im not going to install any more apps

security, you don't have to do a separate backup of /home if you're re-installing the system, etc etc

and btw its too late

yes, progo is right

oh ok cool, I just have /boot [swap] and / :P

holy jesus /usr/src was big on this 1.gb hd it took up 20%
uholy jesus /usr/src was big on this 1.gb hd it took up 20%/u

when I was runing, debian, fedora core, PC-BSD, ubuntu, & mandriva for testing purposes.. I just was using 1 /home, and Acronis Disk Director Suite to manage all the systems
yeah, thats the default layout

on my workstation i just have / and swap :P gonna move /home to another disk later on

lol

also now that im done emergeing and im never going to emerge again can i delete /usr/portage/

well this should work fine… /boot 100 MB swap 2048 / & /home

oh yea… only the system and /home are on /, the rest (media, games, docs) are on different hdds :P

and for / 7 GB

but /home is gonna move
i have 75GB for / of a 160GB drive, rest is for win xp

sleep, *detached*

now what else can i delete

I just finish installing gentoo, booted it- everything works well but I can't login
i probably forgot to set the user/pass for root/other users, is there a way to set it through here?(livecd)

Link–: yes, mount your root filesystem, chroot again then run passwd.

how do I mount them ?

Link–: the same way you did the first time

Link–, just like you did when you installed

its okay if boot is ext3 right?

I just followed the manual, which part should I look ?

Zoo-: yes

I have heard alot of people have it that way, heck I did with debian and others
cool

Zoo-: grub can grok all of the major filesystems

swap has to be created as a primary partition right?

no

Zoo-: no

so I can leave it at logical eh?

it works as logical partition

I"ll show you my settings I"m doing with acronis disk director suite on my acer notebook

How can I make an alias global and consistant across logoff and reboots?

Link–, all the way down at the bottom http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=4

should I re-create /mnt/gentoo/boot or leave it blank ?

give me a sec

^

Link–: it's not needed for this case
Link–: because you're not changing the kernel/bootloader conf

then only mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo ?

Link–: yeah

thanks kerframil / dcoats

Link–: in general, it's always a good idea to mount proc too (mount -t proc non /mnt/gentoo/proc)
Link–: many things don't work correctly unless you do.

ok

Link–: s/non/none/

I'll do so.
now chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash ?

Link–: yeah

Link–, then go to 6a for chroot

ok, done
rebooting
Thanks all :
)

Can someone help me (squid problem) log is good , config is good…but I haven't got connection…
I've try to open google.pl with proxy at my ip … Mozilla can't connect

i'm reading the gentoo handbook and i see that stage 1 and 2 installation aren't supported anymore? why is that?

Mainly because its more work then they think it is worth. You can still get the stages for it, though, if you want

You can achieve the same effect in a much less bug-prone way by doing a stage 3, configuring your compile settings, then running "emerge -e world"

upstream decision by release engineering. it's still possible but they decided that the issues that users can get themselves into during the process are problematic enough that it's not feasible to officially provide end-user support.

i was hoping to go through a long and tedious installation.
but i was going to need guidance from the handbook.
but i see that you can still bootstrap from stage3, so i may go that route.

if you know how to do it then there's nothing stopping you. you shouldn't need to be asking us anything, should you? ;p

everything work well guys, but I'm having trouble with the networking - dhcpcd times out (but when I ifconfig I see eth0 up) and I don't seem to have either net-setup or pppoe-*

:P

well, it's a fair point

anyone? what should I do ?

hello all. while emerging truecrypt, I got the message: /lib/modules/2.6.21-sabayon-r2/build/System.map not found. You must manually update the kernel module dependencies using depmod. what options do I use with depmod?

Link–: is it feasible to set a static IP for now?

I got a dynamic IP

Link–: from where - a local router?

I was using net-setup and pppoe-setuy && pppoe-start
yes

oh, pppoe

*setup
is it a package I could emerge ?

Link–: I haven't used pppoe but I suspect that maybe your kernel is missing ppoe support or that you haven't built the relevant userland tools (or both).

how can I check ?

Link–: well, I can tell you how to check support in the kernel but that's about it.

aight, but should I do afterwards ? isn't there a package for pppoe-setup/start/status and net-setup/status ?

wow… im lagging bad

Link–: hold on, checking

ok.

Link–: ok, it looks like you need to emerge rp-pppoe (which depends on ppp btw).
Link–: also, check that CONFIG_PPOE is set in your kernel (grep PPOE /usr/src/linux/.config after chrooting again).
PPPOE, sorry

hey i've got this livedvd iso but no functional gui. how do i burn it from the shell?
help? please? i really need gentoo back up for my business

CONFIG_PPPOE=y

merge cdrkit then something like: wodim /dev/cdrw foo.iso

I've used rp-pppoe long time ago, right now I've used pppoe-setup is there any difference ?
since I don't recall any

thanks kerf

i need help
my initramfs is 770mb in size

Link–: I don't think so - I suspect that the package incorporates those scripts. that's just a guess on my part thought because, as I say, I'm not (nor have I ever been) a pppoe user.

okay , tell me what you think, I havn't created a home partition yet, but I am going to., also.. so swap doesn't even have to be primary, I thought it had to though, I could set it as logical if I wanted to
http://s115.photobucket.com/albums/n312/clintsnet/?action=view&current=Zoo-partition-layout-for-gentoo-lin.jpg

i dont think this is right

that way you can get a general idea of what I was referring to

ok, thanks.
what about fixing the timeout in dhcpcd ? anyidea why it times out ?

see what I"m saying now?

YOu know it is possible to limit a screenshot to just the one active window.

yep :-)
I was busy with things though,
so, what do you think of that layout though eh?

Link–: you're fast exceeding the extent of my knowledge on how to properly handle a pppoe connection. check the documentation and/or the wiki.

?

ok, thanks

Link–: what I've told you is all that I know.

and I appreciate it, very

Link–: I don't do pppoe either, but anything having to do with networking, I debug with Wireshark.

I don't have X configured yet :p

hey DrChandra, that partition layout should be fine right? and swap doesn't matter if its primary or logical eh?

hi ppls. Just a quick question for you. Where should I go to get a quick answare regarding rt2500 networksdriver giving me unstable link quality? Thanks.

Link–: YOu can capture and look at packets without X.

I'm completely tired of the time I wasted with debian, since sarge, when I guess I should of been using and messing with gentoo :- )

/etc/portage/package.use

Zoo, 2 gigs swap?!

Link–: the package should build quicker (because the X gui will not be compiled in).

almost finished emerging and compiling :

Link–: which is a godsend in particular if you haven't yet installed xorg (and don't feel like building it right now

ah, what about 1.5 :P
I use vmware workstation for linux timmy_boy
heya btw

How much ram, zoo?

Looks like yur swap is Pri, and it's probably better if it is. The 7G for Gentoo looks kind of small, but you have other space you can use for more file systems.

I'm not the insane, leaving that for the night (:
hrm
ok, it's done

1500+ approx

if you're really not that sure what your future space requirements will be then you might consider reading up on LVM.

1 stick of Corsair ddr2, 1GB and 512 DDR2 of this cheap ram acer put in.. but just can't wait to get next notebook
oh, I am pretty sure :- )

well, you seem to be asking a lot of questions for someone who is sure

I just want to get into gentoo and see what its all about, and how it will configure source apps and stuff , like banshee, and I spent 8 + fustrating hours compiling compiz-fusion into etch, and other related bs issues.. fustrated the heck out of me
well, I am willing to send donations, to a team of people willing to work with me on a project
$
or perhaps I can just put an add out in the our city paper, and on the net, looking for enthusiastic people wanting to partner up on a project.. and also.. the support for MS for users.. vmware etc.. and codeweavers, and cedega
because I support people who want to have more than just open source, but also run there favorite software and games
its sad you do my friend
but thats okay, because I don't answer to u

ok, but let's stick to the topic of gentoo support here ok? that's the sort of thing that belongs in #gentoo-chat.

well, I" guess I will do what I can, and mess with it, see if ewan and Jupiter are on later. and see if my associate Gentoo is on Europe, Opera.net etc
well, it looks like I"m going to have to find some people in my local area then
on go on my own journey with gentoo like I did with debian
thanks..

You can get support on this channel.

Zoo, try gentoo chat, and please don't drag our fine beers into your crappy social engineering story
#gentoo-chat *

whatever gnilor,

ok, you're right that it should go to #gentoo-chat but let's not be confrontational ok?

come to Peoria, IL if you don't believe me then
God Bless you though,

I was quite serious about off-topic stuff going to gentoo-chat btw.

7 gigs can work for gentoo, Zoo.

thanks timmy_boy

7 gigs is limiting though

you call that a social engineering story?

anyone know why my fstab is giving me a wrong FS with my ipod, its set to vfat

there is no story gnilor

Do you have a question about Gentoo support?

stop it - this is not a channel for personal bickering - please. I mean it.

does it matter if swap being pri or logical timmy_boy
I wasn't bickering kerframil

Zoo, doesnt matter

Swap can be logical.
I think

good. let's just get back to the topic of your storage needs then

that person said this to me
gnilor Zoo, try gentoo chat, and please don't drag our fine beers into your crappy social engineering story

im running a logical swap

I wasn't trying to start anything though
np kerframil

And yet you're going on about it.

well understood
oh your running a log swap gentooNub?

yeah

does the performance matter with logical or pri?

Sorry Zoo what's up?

no need to be sorry to me neozonz__

Zoo, the only diff is that primary was made when hd's had less then a gig memory so they only made it to allow 4.. logical lets you extend the # of partitions..
iirc

There is an extra layer of indirection w/ logical partitions IIRC.

so anything on a primary can be done on a logical.. and vice-versa

gotcha

The master boot record is only 512 bytes, right? So it can't hold a lot of information.

Might be wrong but yeah.. im running a locigal swap.. also have vista on logical

thats what i was reading timmy_boy earlier

about the iPod, it may be a question of locale… check dmesg to see if it complains about ISO-8859

Vista wouldn't notice if it was stored on a scrap of birch bark.

gentooNub, Close, there is only space on the MBR after the boot code for 4 partition table entries

well logical it is then

DrChandra, lol

arrggh…pidgin doesnt support msn protocol

yagami USE="msn" emerge pidgin
JakieRipper what I think is going on is its trying to mount sdb1 insted of sdb2..
you know how I can fix that?

Hey, I just came to thank you all
I'm now inside my gentoo installation (:

dang it.. acronis… won't let me change /home to pri

er, 'echo "net-im/pidgin msn" /etc/portage/package.use ; emerge pidgin'
