when trying to boot my laptop I get loads of errors after freeing kernel memory and when running things like badblocks
How will you need to add IP's to the list?
yeah, but this is turning into firewalling, which isn't really a gentooism.
it's entirely optional
By hand?
Great im not toughing it :p
..and its taking over the channel
Moved.
there's not much else going on.
http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/USBVideo — is that the list I should be looking at?
one of. http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html also has a good-size list of working cameras
hi tere
what do you plan to use your webcam for?
there*
is there anyway to know which package depends on wxgtk? I want to know if I could remove it or not.
Seeing if I can get pidgin or some pidgin related thing to use it?
Does it normally take forever the first time you do emerge –update –deep world?
equery d wxgtk
or wait
use it with Yahoo Messenger for UNIX
you'll have to wait for that. pidgin doesn't support webcams and won't at least until 3.0
ok what about Yahoo Messenger for UNIX ?
for Y!, i think it might be happy with a v4l-compatible camera, but i don't know. never used it.
ok , is the list I mentioned the correct list?
Since I'm spending money here I have to be sure
webcam support is sadly very spotty. it's hard to know if a cam you buy is going to work with v4l in a sane way.
mailman: "|/usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman post mailman" I've sent an email to mailman@mydomain.com but I don't know where to find my message
ok what about that list?
I don't have equery here.
it's hard to know for sure.
which package it belongs to?
emerge gentoolkit
any ideas?
Are you supposed to add MAKEOPTS="-j2" info your make.conf or just type it into the command line
thanks, grey_wolf
make.conf.
in make.conf
*looks at list* oh, that list is terrible.
but its the default so you can just skip it
ok thanks
when trying to boot my laptop, I get loads of errors after "freeing kernel memory…" and when running things like badblocks, fsck etc. the errors are "ata1.00: tag 0 cmd 0xc8 Emask 0×9 stat 0×51 err 0×40 (media error)newlineata1.00: exception Emask 0×0 SAct 0×0 SErr 0×0 action
0×0newlineata1.00: (BDMA stat 0×20)", anyone have any ideas what I can do?
But is it the right list?
Because the MSI one seems to be supported
if it is, I'll go for it!
huh?
Starcam CLiP?
Getting nervous almost to the part where i messed up last time :p, have to choose desktop soon
Mega Star
i know what MSI is. but are you referring to their Starcam CLiP?
_AxS_, the list on linuxtv.org
the only thing I see on that list is MSI Mega Star 850
media error. bad disk, bad cable, bad something.
it's probably supported by gspca. you can *try* it, but i can't guarantee it'll work with Y!.
gspca? what's that?
where do I tell postfix to foward all mail to a specific server?
a v4l component?
the driver.
ahh
There was this guy on the news
I was thinking bad disc since it's been doing a lot of corrupting lately :/
who wrote 340 webcam drivers for Linux
Does he have a list or something?
but it's like 2 months old :/
mailman: "|/usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman post mailman" I've sent an webmail hosting to mailman@mydomain.com but I don't know where to find my message
yes, yes, yes. the guy that wrote the spca5xx driver. yes, he wrote gspca.
i just linked you the list.
export PS1="(chroot) $PS1" is that an L or a one
a *one*
a 1
k
a won. not an ell
which list?
I didn't recieve any pms or anything
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html — that one. the one i linked 5 minutes ago
oops i goofed
ahh yes
how do i fix it
so anything on that list will be v4l compat or no?
ctrl+c and redo it will work
press Ctrl+C and type it again
you missed a quote
ty
Should it be at (chroot) &PS1
again, i don't know. they'll probably work, but i can't tell you if they'll work with Y!. i told you, support is spotty.
export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"
too late now, $PS1 is messed
yeah i know
am i right now
you probably wrote & instead of $, but it doesn't really matter, it's just for the install (assuming you're installing atm)
Yeah i wront & not $
How do i fix
its just a display thing.
well, you could leave the chrooted shell and chroot again, but i recommend just ignoring it
as said, it's just a matter of what it displays, it won't affect anything else
SO just continue from (chroot) &PS1 prompt
yep
k ty
ls -FGg /etc/make.profile — is this where i plug in desktop insteak of profile of is that after this step
so no ideas on my problem?
"|/usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman post mailman"
where do I find mail that was sent to that?
*cricket cricket*
my emerge of eterm-0.9.4 has failed with "collect2: ld returned 1 exit status" I do not see any other clues as to the cause, any ideas?
If its telling me an update to portage is available and I should do it now should i do that before following the guild or ignore that and follow the guide
I saw some imlib undefined reference messages, so I did emere -1uDvaN media-libs/imlib2 just to be sure, but that did not help
I have Gentoo installed on my system with WinXP
I did a reinstall of windows and obvisouly it overwrote my MBR
how would I boot from my live cd and setup grub again?
Cyber-Dogg: You'll have to boot back into the live CD, re-mount your partitions, and re-install GRUB (or LILO) :/
you have to use your livecd to get back into your install and reemerge grub
not emerge. install
lol. you beat me to it
so how do I check where my mail ends up? someone Must know this!
I know that's what I need to do but I just wanted to verify how to do it so I don't screw anything up!
Alex Do you know the answer to my question
just use the handbook cyber-dogg
Cyber-Dogg: You basically just mount them like you did before. Just don't do any mkfs steps.
I always emerge portage when it tells me to
just like you did the first time
ok then go back to the guide
yeah
^_^
ok… so I just need to do it like I did the first time then
how does one get xinetd to reload its config files?
yep. just like the first time cyberdoggie
Cyber-Dogg: Yes, there's no difference, again, apart from the fact that you won't be making any filesystems or copying any files.
right
on centos I'd do a "service xinetd reload"
well… here we go!
bbiab
ahh now it says 2 config files in /etc need updating
It that someting i need to look at?
You either install rattle from within R or via paludis. Let me know if you have questions.
…
If it will telling me i need to update 2 files in my /etc folder, will it hurt not to do it and continue on with the handbook?
I have found the problem with remote driver for af9005 dvb usb stick…
Basically, the module has to be loaded into the kernel, prior to inserting the usb device..
anyone have any ideas on my eterm emerge error?
Otherwise, the dvb card is recognised and initialised, but the remote driver isn't….
This is a pain as I wanted to leave the box connected… but I'll have to disconnect the usb on reboot..
Also, the dvb driver causes an oops if you remove the usb stick and the driver will not modprobe -r
….
Ah well. At least it works..
and unlike windows, reboots are not that often
Thanks for the help everyone..
Hello all, how do I create a dhcp server on gentoo?
quick question about samba/swat/pam
if anyone's around
No one's here, but go ahead and ask anyway.
no one
fantastic
i emerged samba and xinetd and edited the swat file to let me login from another computer
and i can open the page in my browser, but i can't login as root
i've added root with smbpasswd
and enabled it
in my swat.log i have the error
Pastebin errors longer than 2-3 lines.
PAM: smb_pam_auth failed - rejecting user root
hey guys… kinda lost… figured Id stop by here… been using linux, gentoo, suse, etc… frustrated… not doing what I want… computer about to go out the window… anyways, want to try freeNAS since it seems to be the only specific distro for NAS thats free… anyways, suppose to be a
forum up here on BSD, but /list sends me on a never ending list of channels. anyone know a BSD…
…channel or how to use IRC /list command to find one… I know this is WAY off topic, but hell, you guys are the only place I know where I can go for help without beign flamed
Have you tried the #samba folks?
i have not
They'd be able to give you more guidance that's application specific.
alright i'll try that
thanks
is there a #gpl room ?
If I get quad core, will Gentoo utilize all 4 cores while compiling?
Any modern Linux distro with SMP support on the boot CD would.
Thanks
You'll just need to make sure your MAKEOPTS="-j5" in your make.conf, when you get to that step
try /msg chanserv list *bsd*
USE setting
USE="-gtk -gnome qt3 qt4 kde dvd alsa cdr"
maybe you guys know of a linux hosting distro that is NAS specific
wiki ati open source
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_DRI_with_ATi_Open-Source_Drivers
Makes sense
Do they want me to type this in the make.conf?
try /msg chanserv list *bsd*
whoops
xinetd
whoops?
I believe that's an example USE flags config. You'll want to add and remove as needed.
Or is it really just an example
ok thansk a lot
woops = I accedently deleted everything under root
…
You mean, under /root ?
jeu crixetermis
hey
cruxeternus no… I was refering to a comment earlier
ya i selected from try to the end (including ^M) and pasted into the same window
ok the verdict is in! I'm getting an $11 Logitech Quickcam Express!
Oh, heh, I see now. Tought to follow the flow sometimes.
fingers are like stuffed sasauge today
cruxeternus yea… hehe….
GreenJelly, topic is Gentoo support. (points at channel name)
bit yep… but unfortunately Gentoo channel rocks… just to advanced for me to run… everywhere I go I get flamed
anyone knows is what package that i find "kde-config" ?
i did something wrong when i went to do emerge gentoo-sources it saif ARCH not set are you missing the /etc/make.profile
GreenJelly, well probably going to find a muzzle here.
is it because i did the emerge portage after the emerge –sync like it wanter?
bit it is bad… try going to SuSe channel… cant ask a question without some "leet" wanting to make him feel better by making you feel worse
GreenJelly, It's not to advanced, I think. It just takes time and education.
`readlink /etc/make.profile` shows what?
too
bit took me 8 hours to try and install it…
/etc/make.profile' simlink?
Yeah, what does it point to? `readlink /etc/make.profile`
!!! Is the siymlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?
sec
GreenJelly, Took me a week the first time. My lappy took me a month….(trying to figure out the hardware…dialup.)
./usr/portage/profiles/desktop
GreenJelly, 8 hours sounds really impressive.
THat's not a valid profile
really
bit well I messed up on the grub, and got frustrated, and moved on…
Damn just when i thought i was reading the documementation to a t
What processor do you have?
I typed ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/desktop /etc/make.profile
I have a p4 1.4
GreenJelly, problem spot for me as well. Seemed like there was 3 different things called root..and I couldn't figure which was which for some while
I have a p4 1.7*
p4?
nvm
You more than likely want `ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop /etc/make.profile`
bit yea
i686
that what ur lookin for
GreenJelly, to add to the stress, I had a windows partition that wasn't backed-up with all my stuff on it. heh
evening
kerframil told me earlier this is where i have been going wrong
bit got you dvd, then your kernel your working on… dont know what is what… handbook is great, I LOVE the general kernel… got a Celeron D with 1 Gig of Ram, so I am not afraid of the big kernel
I am trying to do this part right
aka_druid is kinda dumb
choosing a desktop profile
He was right.
Yeah
I cant seem to get the desktop right, need some kelp
bit aka+driod os a F9834 a$shat
Did you see my correct desktop symlink that I provided above?
let me type that in sec
bit then there is iSiS or what ever… wow… what a jerk…
GreenJelly, If the offical docs aren't helping, can always search the forums and gentoo-wiki.com. Usually once you get gentoo installed the way you want it, you don't have to mess with it much. I've only had to do a total reinstall like 3 times in a 5 years
GreenJelly, heh. I don't have much of the SOTA(state of the art) hardware. So I haven't had to look into that yet. I'll be looking soon though.
Ah perfect thank you so much, thanks for being patient tooo
np, and good luck
Half way there
When this is over should i let it auto configure my kernel
bit I am triing to use Linux RAID-5 expand features… I expect them to get much better, and more relable… wish there was a linux distro for NAS…
And when i finally reboot and and am command line later on tonight is if better / faster to use xorg from the link i recieved earlier
bit freebsd has freeNAS, which has a growfs(#) feature, which I am triing to find out if it will expand a RAID 5 array
Git is so cool! I love it!
Which shell do you guys reccomend I use? xorg
I like BASH
hehe
hi, dns resolving is really slow on my gentoo xen box, while on my other boxed there's no problem. They all use the same server host though, when I ping on an ipaddress it's normal, when I use the dns name it takes 15 seconds and than I get
the first ping, than 3 seconds until the next one etc,….. anyone an idea ?
bash for root. Some people use zsh.
swome like Kshell or CShell if you like C
For graphical
Install both Gnome and KDE, so that you can run both types of programs
Can I PM you?
I must be on the right track i just emerge gentoo-sources and yesterday i got 2.6.20-r8 now i am getting 2.6.21-64
hi is there currently a way to force 'static' libraries for, forexample gtk+ and glib?
will USE=static do, or will this mess up dynamic compilation?
Is using genkernel the best way to go for me being a beginner, or should i just try the manual way
Minor723 I love genkernel… wish more distros used it… but the manual way is harder and can save you processing power
hum ill try genkernel
im not in the mood for harder
Minor723 hehe your installing Gentoo…
/usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.6 is that right or should it be
GreenJelly, is that bait?
/usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.6.21-r4
bit hope not…
bit Gentoo taught me allot, but its not easy
To make things easy, just start eliminating choices.
def not ununtu is alot easier
both those commands above work
does it matter which one i do
Both work.. but one creates a file `kernel-config-2.6` and the other `kernel-config-2.6.21-r4`
So which should i run?
I would stick with the handbook.
k
Hello all from Russia!
Mihwas, Don't forget to check out #gentoo-ru
gentoo for the rooskies
the fluxbox howto says to emerge gdm, then rc-update xdm, but I have no file /etc/init.d/xdm
bit` Oh, yes of course! But I dont want to asking any questions I just join your's company
..you have xorg dont you?
I just assumed emerging fluxbox would have pulled in xorg
Mihwas, Welcome.
not necessarily, at least, not xorg-server necessarily
emerge -pv xorg-x11 to see
Xorg is much better now that it's modular
s.
argh!
79 new packages
do I need all of this shit?
Language please.
sorry
anyone any experience with gentoo on a dell latitude 120l?
gotta love censorship
You'll need all of Xorg to get any use out of fluxbox.
do I need all of this garbage? 79 packages seems like a lot
ok
it's 79 small packages
However, you can limit the number of video drivers, by specifying a VIDEO_CARDS="…" in your make.conf
I have done that
yes, indeed
jsin, What were you wanting to emerge?
it used to be in one big package, now it's in many small
I am just setting up fluxbox bit`
how would i setup a dhcp server on gentoo ?
right. but if you want to use it on your desktop, then you need all of xorg.
sk2k7_ops, and you are now on the radar.
emerge it?
ok
it is emerging ow
now
just emerge a dhcp daemon, configure it, and start it
that should give you /etc/init.d/xdm
cool, thanks
ok
I was starting fresh because I wanted to get rid of my bloating, so I am trying not to keep adding excess
Why install xorg vg kde and gnome, or should i install all 3?
vs*
install what you want to use
good answer
but xorg is needed for either kde or gnome
I am not sure what I want to use,
jsin, guess you could try emerge fluxbox –nodeps. Probably not recommended though
Well I know I am install Xorg then/
Xorg handles the graphics and input, kde and gnome are desktop environments that run on top of X
Xorg is not a desktop environment, it's just the windowing system; you'll still need something like kde/gnome to have a desktop environment
you must instal Xorg and some desktop system such as kde or gnome or someone else
If you arent' familiar with the differences between KDE and Gnome, you may want to try some distro's that publish LiveCD's specializing in those environments. Painless way to try them out, instead of trying to emerge and unmerge them to test them.
sorry, not system environmen
I have used knoppix and ubutnu
those are both kde i think
well, knoppix has KDE, ubuntu has gnome
Then you've used both, I believe
which did you prefer?
Dont really see much of a difference
vanilla ubuntu is gnome, yes
kubuntu is the kde version
there isn't much
there's really not
they both serve the same purposes
this isnt #ubuntu
That's my line. :/
so, uh.. gentoo help anyone?
what is this would send signal XXXX to XXXX?
I know it isn't, we were just confirming which DEs Minor723 might have used
Yeah I just want a stable system for browsing, email, little of lan snooping / wep cracking (for personal fun)
?
Minor723 you must use that desktop that you prefer
helping a user install a graphical environment doesn't constitute gentoo support?
why yellow text, it hurts
and torrent dling noting major
when I shutdown the computer
i still recognize that nick from about 10 years ago…
You want to send a signal to a running process?
Which do you think would be suitable
whichever
hello fellow gentooers
i can help.. install fluxbox
of XFCE
*or
hello ladies and gentoolemen
both will do all that perfectly fine
no I gentoo will
eromero hello
xfce is nice
is there a way to know what mobo a server has without openning the case? (collocated server far away, no physical access)
What are you asking? I don't understand.
yep xfce rulz
deciding which desktop environment, if any, to use, is really a web services for my personal site decision. It's hard to say which to use, so just try one and see if you like it
nattdyr xfce cool, but I'm prefer flux
lspci, lshw
if you have a box fat enough to compile world why on earth use 'lightweight' window managers?
it can range on if you are a minimalist.. to someone who likes eye candy.
To much fiddling with flux. XFCE is fast and nice without all the fiddling around
Guys, desktop / window manager comparisons are, indeed, off-topic here. Thank you for your cooperation.
because they tend to get in the way
because compiling world to grab updates.. and wanting to run something that is nice and fast vs.. bloated
well, gnone or kde sure makes an update world take a lot longer
Sorry
I get the message "Would send signal 2345 to 1102 when I shutdown my computer
there are ways around that too
how?
If i have a problem installing kde i will let you know
binpkgs mostly
if you are new to linux in general.. i would kick something like gnome or kde .. if you are someone who has used it before.. i would choose something like fluxbox or blackbox
Gentoo is a distribution of many, many choices. You'll have to find ways to decided what you want, in several areas, on your own.
cheers!
Has any one of you ever experienced vertical orange lines when XDM starts?
And you're asking how to stop the message?
i want to copy a directory tree but exclude a certain folder, are my only options find+cpio or rsync?
dont forget that you are not limited to just one
could anyone offer any suggestions to why i loose my digital out once in a while ? last time i had to reboot and remove the asound.state file
what package has lshw?
so not really a gentoo question… but i'm running gentoo…. so here it goes: kde vs gnome: i've been running gnome or fluxbox… but i've noticed that i've been using quite a few kde tools (ie i just got krdc)… should i switch? or just emerge the tools as the time comes?
lshw
Does this message stop your computer from shutting down?
depends .. you are gonna probably end up installing most of libs for kde anyways.
Demonic_ try out both, see what fits your usage pattern better
do you use anything gnome besides its backgrounds
hehe thansk
i like the layout of gnome… but i like the kde apps…
i think they should make a gnoke (gnome + kde)
Then run gnome with kde apps.
have the simple/elegence of gnome… but the tools of kde
I don't see why you couldn't run kde apps in gnome, the only drawback is that the kdelibs aren't loaded when you start your DE, so it'll take a extra moment to load the libs when you start the first kde app
eh.. stick with what you got then.
if you like gnome, stay with it
sometimes when XDM starts, I get vertical orange lines, a cursor, and nothing else; wtf?
i doubt he notices the difference heh
does it just stop there? or takes awhile to load.
so, uh.. gentoo help anyone?
i'm running a c2d t7200 (2G) with 2G ram… i doubt i'll notice the half second extra…
i think i'll stay with what i'm doing
thanks!
Question?
i'm offering, not asking for
eterm fails when emerging unless imlib2 is emerged with the X use flag, however, eterm does not tell you to remerge imlib with the X use flag, it just fails without any good error. Is that a bug?
guys… I'm trying to do rpl 'blah '-)' text.txt. But he thinks that -) is command line options. How can i make it to work right?
uguys… I'm trying to do rpl 'blah '-)' text.txt. But he thinks that -) is command line options. How can i make it to work right?/u
_AxS_,
sry 2nd message was wrongchatted
_AxS_, any suggestions to why i loose my digital out once in a while ? last time i had to reboot and remove the asound.state file
are you sure you just aren't reading up far enough to notice it?
use — to say done-with-options
ie, rpl — blah '-)' text.txt
i had an issue a few minutes ago… where i had to read up quite a bit just to find out what was causing the issue… about 40 lines or so…
that is posible demonic, and now it is too late to see again since I fixed it
It totally freezes as far as I can tell, I never had the patience to wait it out longer than 1 min.
it was not on the screen, it may have scrolled off the screen
ty
more like badly documented, but otoh it's quite obvious that imlib2 should be built with X set anyway, and surely is so in the desktop profile
My computer is pretty fast after all.
Ill prolly need some gentoo help as soon as my gentoo kernel compiles
just wait
I am using the desktop profile
its taking a very long time
It's unlikely that the community will get up and leave in the interim. Please feel free to ask specific questions about problems that aren't answered in the handbook, as you come across them.
Yeah, it takes a while. Luckily, if you change the configuration, it only builds the changed things.
MindlessTux (If the poster is a dev, they may not moderate.)
ARGH! Sorry.
maybe its a driver issue. what card do you use?
Stupid mIRC keeps pasting things without asking.
video sorry..
mIRC? in gentoo?
say it isnt so.
(Alright, everyone sneak out while Minor723 is building…)
Sorry, I'm at work.
here's a gentoo question (emerge more so)… when doing emerge -av _package_… and the results gives you different USE flags… are those all the USE flags possible?
bhere's a gentoo question (emerge more so)… when doing emerge -av _package_… and the results gives you different USE flags… are those all the USE flags possible?/b
I have X-Chat on a Nokia tablet thingy, and I have irssi at home, and I have an ssh client here thank you very much :-b
then ssh home silly
different use flags from what?
Nvidia, drivers 9631.
Mmm yeah I guess I could.
Perhaps I should update.
[ebuild U ] gnome-extra/gnome-power-manager-2.18.3 [2.16.3] USE="-debug -doc (-libnotify%*)" 0 kB
maybe that would help a bit.
for example
i want to copy a directory tree but exclude a certain folder, are my only options find+cpio or rsync?
nvidia drivers can be tempermental
yes, what about it?
is that all of the use flags possible… or are there more that would apply to that program?
no, -v shows all use flags that apply
ok.. thanks…
without saying rtfm… what does the (-libnotify%*) mean?
(mainly the ()'s
)
check with euses
?
it's a handy tool for finding out what use flags stands for
() circumfix = forced, masked, or removed
% suffix = newly added or removed
I haven't memorized them all you know
- prefix = not enabled (either disabled or removed)
is it a USE flag option or another option that allows xscreensaver to logout a user?
oh, right, you meant the ( %*) part
yeah…
is supermount completely deprecated ?
thanks!
I made some popcorn to enjoy the show
watching the gcc screensaver?
Good.
that's what i did last night
I've never seen busybox before
Watching kernels compile is fun.
no problem they're listed in man emerge if you ever want to check up on them
yeah, relaxing in some perverse sence
sorry… missed that somehow…
Do any of you play wow
could you expand on the () a bit more… not quite sure i follow… because what if i would want the libnotify?
ucould you expand on the () a bit more… not quite sure i follow… because what if i would want the libnotify?/u
i've been off the wow for a month
that surely brought about an awkward silence
Wonder if you can get it to run on gentoo
works fine in wine
you can
well, if it's been removed, it's probably because the package no longer supports that function/library/whatever
Runs as good as it does in xp?
the reason might be explained in the Changelog
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_and_update_World_Of_Warcraft_with_wine
where's the "please stay on topic" guy?
fair enough…
HEY! Stay on topic!
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_and_update_World_Of_Warcraft_with_wine
Am i not supposed to talk about other stuff in here
wow on gentoo is on topic
It should be mostly Gentoo-related.
No problem
IT IS!
Quake wars
If it gets busier, the criteria gets stricter.
if it's on the gentoo-wiki… wouldn
…on Gentoo?
t that half make it acceptable?
(enter key hates me today)
You'd think.
Yeah, it's annoying when that happens.
i run WoW on Gentoo, works pretty much the same as it does on XP (perhaps a few fps less)
no, on Linux
I'm over WoW…we broke up months ago
it's not distro centric
k nm dont wanna get in trouble
gentoo isn't distro centric either
huh??
oh come on… doing 2 emerges at once (no overlapping packages) and my harddrive is barely working and my propcessor is only at about 20% usage…. :'(
you can install it from any linux environment, right?
if that environment has the required libs of software
you're doing something wrong
Your bus must be really slow then.
or really short
no… just many small packages…
lol, how fast is your ram?
yeah, and imho, the community doesn't have an animosity against other distros in the same way as others have
pc2-5300
oohh.. configure's taking forever
well you can prefetch the packages in another terminal to keep your machine fully utilized
basically…
oh hey, does the gentoo livedvd have wireless support?
emerge -f
already did
some probably. no firmware tho
it's the whole checking……. part… that slows it down quite a bit… all of the stuff using cc1 flies…
would i gain any speed by running it outside of X?
i blame it on python
You should have /usr/portage on a flash hard-drive to avoid the bottleneck of searching all those files
lol
hmmm….
$20 for 4gb?
is it like usb 1.0 or something?
any idea how i might use the harddrive.. and the flashdrive interchangably?
or is /usr/portage/ only used when doing emerge stuff?
USB 0.9 beta.
Haha.
k i have a prob now
since when has usb been faster than the IDE bus?
Both are faster than many hard drives. USB might have more latency.
nope… brand new SanDisk Curzer Micro… "Enhanced for Windows ReadyBoost"
no /var is used too for a temp
but it on a ramdrive if you have to
usb2 — that's an important thing to note
sweet deal… I got it working
thanks for the help
find /lib/modules/2.6.21-r4/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko' I am getting find: /lib/modules/2.6.21-r4/: No such file or directory
a flash based SATA drive
good sale… plus 10% emp discount…
ah
that would be sexy…
10% of $20 is only $2
as long as it was sata2 (3G)
g'evening
flash, really? isn't that going to die after a few months' worth of writes?
they keep changing it, i can't even keep up
no… 20 was the final cost…
they're very expensive though
i get 10% off register price… then 50 mail-in after that…
aw man the help really did leave
I'm still here…
huh? what you want help with?
Ahhhh, okay, I see. Mail-in rebates. That's the deal. Anyway yeah, solid-state drives are available
this error
find /lib/modules/2.6.21-r4/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko' I am getting find: /lib/modules/2.6.21-r4/: No such file or directory
how'd we end up doing allthe work in a friday nyhow?
can someone help me with the timezone settings
I dunno.
oh yeah, today is friday
sure. what tz?
hey people! how do i set my locale? a persistent one… not the variable
anyone know why kde 3.5.7 isnt in the stable list ?
so you didn't 'make modules_install'
Add code to one of the login scripts to set the variable.
I set them in /etc/conf.d/clock (US/Central) and I set /etc/localtime, and made sure that my time is set UTC before, but it doesn't adjust the time..
Like in ~/.bashrc.
I am making the confused face, so i am guessing not?
'date' doesn't change the time it reports?
thanx
np
do you have ntp installed?
no, it does say CDT now, but the time is the same
It should.
How can i fix this, i just finished compiling
What were you building?
no
do you want your system clock to be local or utc?
And did you make modules_install for your kernel?
I thought I was supposed to set UTC and it would adjust for me
how i do i recompile a package? sorry for the newb question
Just emerge it again.
you can have it either way, its up to you. secure linux web hosting time != system time, except on boot
just did emerge gentoo-sources then i did genkernel all
Unless you pass –noreplace to emerge, it will happily rebuild anything you pass on the command line.
if there's a security vulnerability in java how does that get updated on gentoo?
Than i was on the next step
How can i avoid emerge'ing modules everytime i compile a new kernel ?
A GLSA (Gentoo Linux Security Advisory) goes out on gentoo-announce. It will be updated in portage.
ok, then im really having a prob
There's a tool for that. I forget the name.
anyhow, if your timezones are right, and you have UTC or local (whichever you want) in /etc/conf.d/clock, then set the time and do 'hwclock -w' to write it to system.
As for the make modules_install i dont know
What happened?
and then you'll be good
I don't know genkernel well. I rarely use it.
there was a package that did that for you… module-rebuild or something like that
cool
I am on 7.e. Kernel Modules in the handbook
i recommend emerging 'ntp' so you can set it via ntpdate
?
got an error, ill pastebin it now
or i just keep a list of packages that build modules in a text files and then do emerge $(list.txt)
as all systems seem to have a little bit of skew
*text file
Okay. And tell me what you were trying to do.
so my java will be updated when i do "emerge -u world" ?
what what would cause an su to fail? (if the password's right, and I'm in wheel)
Yes, but you should never do emerge -u world without checking what it's going to update.
What was the error? Check /var/log/messages or wherever your log is.
ok so i'd do "emerge -vpu world"
When would the handbook have told me to do make modules_install so i can go see if i missed it
Or emerge -auv world, which will ask you yes or no after printing the list.
I was trying to emerge cairo ad im looking at getting emerald and beryl and i get two errors. The first one is for a dpendency of beryl telling me I need cairo installed with the glitz use flag, the second one is when i emerge cairo http://pastebin.ca/618246
right after 'make'
It's only if you don't use genkernel.
ok thanks
he is using genkernel
Oh, I have no clue about Beryl and that sort of thing.
then why didn't genkernel install the modules?
Is it possible I just dont have any modules?
no
esp. not with genkernel
beryl is nice
and even then you would still have the dir
I'm not sure the error is specifically beryl, just an error when emerging cairo
su: Authentication failure.
yey… 2 days after i screw around with netscape-flash… it gets updated…. to what it should be… :'(
i don't like however that it crashes my X when i switch between virtual terminals
oh well… gave me a good learning experience…
Are you sure you are using teh right password? Is it your own password or the root password?
Flash is evil.
no kidding… it makes me want to cry
root. But I know it's right.
(and it's just ugly on the resources)
Try your own password, just in case.
if I do a login (not getty- the login command) the pass works I doesen't in the case of su.
Hmm.
Check /etc/pam.d/su for relevant comments.
# find /lib/modules/2.6.19-r5/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko' is what it says to input with Don't forget to substitute 2.6.19-r5 with the version of the kernel you just compiled:
ok….
which was 2.6.21-r4
is your user in the wheel group?
Not sure what im doing wrong
are you on the livecd or in chroot?
so the fact that I had to download files from the sun website when i installed the sun jdk with emerge won't disrupt the update/patching process?
I don't see why it would. emerge asked you to, right?
I am on (chroot) &PS1
who talked with me about the "would send signal 23423 to 234324"?
ok then genkernel did not complete. run it again
yes it did
If you follow its instructions, you should be fine.
'genkernel all' or 'genkernel –menuconfig all'
yes.
actually, 'genkernel –menuconfig –install all' would be best
genkernel actually does something ?
I'm wondering if it could be a lack of some crypto kernel function, or something….
No.
That's all done in userspace.
ok its running
It's ery weird, then….
does anyone know of a way to recompile a package just taking into account a new use flag, not updating the package with any new version?
With what you said last
good
now its got a menu
should I be able to find depscan.sh in a package (baselayout?), or is it "built" by baselayout and then installed?
so tweak any choices in the kernel config if you want, or just exit to build a default genkernel kernel.
i added "dev-java/sun-jre-bin nsplugin" to my /etc/portage/package.use but when it shows the emerge -av for it.. it is listed as -nsplugin
any ideas?
emerge the specific version of the package with the -n (new use flag) flag
that's -N not -n, -n is –noreplace
thanks ill give that a try
emerge =joe-1.2.3 or some such. check the emerge man page if you don't know the syntax for emerging a specific version of the package.
anyone know why I get the message when I shutdown "Would send signal 3453 to 4523"?
ok
that's why you're the judge and I'm the law…. talking… guy.
guys, what could be the reason of me lacking "The Great GNOME 2.18.0 mask" in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask ?
as root, I can do a 'passwd' and change my password to… let's say 'a'. I can from there login (but only with the login command: not getty or qingy or gdm) with that pass, And i still can't su….
my computer seems to have reboot during emerging ~x86 baselayout. depscan.sh is gone, and every time something tries to call it, halt.sh gets called. I try to re-emerge baselayout, and while merging, it gets to rc-update, and halt gets called. no output to the screen, but the caps and numlock
toggles die.
First of all, sure your hardware is ok?
su from what, another user?
are you using pam? is the pam config a little strange?
I was having issues with /lib/rcscrits/init.d, which have gone since re-emerging baselayout, but emerging it again in a chroot jail just yields the same thing
what should I be looking for?
hmm more probs, how can i check what useflags a package was compiled with?
equery, portage-utils, pkgcore, and more
Well, random reboots and mysterious compile problems are good indicators. Might want to boot up memtest86 from the livecd and test some RAM for a while.
is there anyway to have Grub load a USB driver so I can use my USB keyboard?
would i find instruction on the gentoo site, or wiki or somewhere?
do you have portage-utils?
Cyber-Dogg: i dont htink so, but you can set the bios to usb legacy support which will then support having a usb keyboard
Cyber-Dogg: your bios needs to handle that
ok… I don't know if it has that or not… but I'll check it
look for the q command
Cyber-Dogg: it might directly be called 'usb keyboard' support
I know I didn't see that one
I doubt this was a random reboot since logs show the initial emerge of baselayout never finished, that the computer functions normally in kubuntu, emerging baselayout yeilded no compile problems (not that the computer was stretched), and also the computer stops at the same point emerging
baselayout every time, and booting every time
my system is a little old unfortunately
Cyber-Dogg: legacy then
bbiaf
Is this on a new install, or existing Gentoo system?
ok im done.
AFAIK: I'm using pam… but I'm not sure of any good way to configure it, or what a good config should look like… is there a way to re-emerge su and such and pam?
existing. computer was working on emerge -avuDn system
I was looking around in there and not knowing must it didnt seem to have ati video support or usb printer support or sound support by default. That seems odd to me
depscan.sh is missing from the computer completely.
are you in the wheel group?
yes
Ouch. Uhm. Hrm.
I figured I'd start by looking for where I could find a copy of depscan.sh. baselayout finishes compiling and testing and locks up merging
thanks
my next guess is to search the compiled source of baselayout for depscan.sh, since it did lock while merging, but I don't know if the drives ever even sync'd
Well, I can pastebin my depscan.sh, but you may have deeper problems.
i want to copy a directory tree but exclude a certain folder, are my only options find+cpio or rsync?
probably.

sorry, this junky web client doesn't have excellent tab completion
hanks. i'll poke around in it and see whats what.
The new ntp ebuild changes /etc/conf.d/ntpd's directive for NTPD_OPTS= from "-u ntp:ntp" to undefined. What's the difference
Please don't change your nick to reflect your current though.

hey, anyone know a site that gives stats as to the popularity of unixbased servers verse windows servers?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio4_aod.shtml?radio4/nowshow
Netcraft?
how would I get the right url to play that in mplayer?
yea something like that, im looking throught the site now
How can I rm all files that are specified in some text file?
Apache last time I checked has a dominating market presence.
I'm installing a new gentoo system and I'm about to compile the kernel. Why aren't there any DRI/DRM graphics options in make menuconfig?
how would i go about clearing out all of my downloaded package's cache… then download only the newest/currently installed packages… just incase i have to remerge something with a different flag?
How can I rm all files that are specified in some text file? 1 file per line
Character Devices or Graphics.
rm $(file_list.txt)
xargs rm -vi file
ty
though if there is whitespace in the names that won't work
eclean -d distfiles
well im more looking to see how much of the server market unux/linux controls verse windows.
erm. one more thing cruxeternus, could you run equery belongs /sbin/depscan.sh ?
even tho most unixbased systems are free
sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.9 :/
Well, the map isn't the territory… Unix/Linux is probably 99.999 percent of the routers…. and also dominates our telephone infrastructure… where would you be looking for a comparison that shows Windows in the lead… ?
because it doesn't seem to be in the work file of the /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/baselayout directory after it finished compiling and was merging. I don't know where it installs to.
Are you on baselayout-2*?
I need to find out where programs put things when they do the 'make install' before they merge them into the real tree. yup
hmm, is there even anyone who uses Windows for servers (except for mini companies, the government) ?
both dont work
I know the Chinese want you to run windows, because that's where they install their viruses.
sry! oi works in bash
i know windows leads the desktop market, but I think its different for the server market
not in zsh(
clusters running on windows, lol
could the windows server discussion move to #gentoo-chat please?
Thanks, it's in Character Devices.
that's a pretty bold statement to make…
heh
I'll give some details and examples in #gentoo-chat
thats a pretty apt statement to make
ah-ha, a forum post. do these chats get logged and archived anywhere? should I bother posting the solution if I find it?
I'm trying to use the linux-2.6.22-gentoo kernel, but it doesn't seem to have CONFIG_NET_RADIO. Any ideas?
what is command to talk with userr on shell?
post it on the forums
echo?
upd echo "Hello."
then they can respond with echo "Hi"
if will work becouse i connect on ssh
The contents of this channel get lost to eternity. (Thanks God.)
Do you mean to write a message on another user's terminal?
Or to print a message in a shell script?
um, talk, write, wall, mesg
yes
/dev/ttyN
heh
/dev/ttyN.
oh yes
write to another user's terminal
At my school, only hackers get user accounts, so everyone gets wheel. A few people lost it for a few days after making a habit of that
(It was, of course, totally undemocratic — any of us could remove the other's wheel access, or reboot the system, mount the root fs, and modify /etc/group.)
/dev/ttyN
What's 8100?
same, just an alternate port
Same as what?
same as 6667
What is it sending them from freenode?
Oh. But wouldn't you need to log in first to make it useful?
yes, of course
But how do you log in if it's only being catted one way?
but I didn't want to paste all that into here.
Ah.
We need a sys-pranks category in Portage, for things like that.
lol
what about rather having sex or something?
What's a good console ftp client?
ncftp is the one I use
Hi all, I want to emerge a package in jailed environment, which is not set in the ebuild. I just read http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Create_an_Updated_Ebuild, but from my undestanding of it, the replacement ebuild that I would
need to write in a portage overlay, would be ignored on susequent releases of the same package? is that correct? if so any way around this?
well… it doesn't look like my USB Legacy support works right
Thanks, I'll try it out.
Cyber-Dogg: How old is the motherboard? I've got an old one that, no matter what I do, I can't get both USB keyboard in GRUB and also working after boot up.
it's an A7V333
about 5 years old
Yeah, bout the same as these.
the keyboard works after boot
just not with bios or grub
gentoo picks it up fine though
Cyber-Dogg: Well, I basically can have one or the other with mine.
one or the oehter?
oh… you mean either bios OR grub
Cyber-Dogg: Either working in the GRUB menu, or working after boot into Gentoo.
LOL
anyone having problems with installing the newest flash through portage? emerge netscape-flash downloads the file, but percentage meter only shows 50% and emerge quits saying it could not download the file
how do you get it working in grub menu?
So I have a PS/2 keyboard hooked up for whenever I need to boot into another system or kernel
it was fixed today, sync and emerge it again
cool, thanks
yeah… that's what I'm going to have to do I think
Cyber-Dogg: Get one of those PS/2 numpads… so it's small and discrete
oh yeah! didn't think about that… i only need arrows and enter
Why in the world is uinput not enabled as a module in a genkernel setup? Now I'm forced to recompile, and yes, I'm being a whiney little bitch but I'm quite annoyed at the moment.
though for the BIOS, dunno.
nope… just +,- and arrows
but I don't need the bios very often and I can hook up a full KB when needed for that
I just need something to make it easier to get into the gentoo
yes… I said THE Gentoo, cause there's only one!
What files determine the environment on non-interactive logins (e.g. use "ssh hostname program"; how do environment variables like PATH get determined for the ssh session in which "program" runs)?
most of that still gets read from the profile
it just gets shortcut before interactive stuff happens
hi guys, I've had mp3 in my use flags since the beginning, but audacious and totem wont' play mp3s, what should I do?
so what would the "gentoo way" be to change that environment system-wide for all users? also, when you say "profile", do you mean/etc/profile ?
/etc/env.d is what you're looking for, I think
hang on
gentoo fbvortex environment variables
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=5
how would I get the right url for http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio4_aod.shtml?radio4/nowshow to play it in mplayer?
that changes env.profile, which only seems to sourced for interactive logins
Use the 'livehttpheaders' mozilla plugin for firefox… it will show you the raw http headers and you can analyze the code for the correct URL.
hmm
I am still having problems, After my kernel compiles I am still in the (chroor)
I am still having problems, After my kernel compiles I am still in the (chroot)*
well, you can always edit /etc/profile
Chicago, really? I expect it will be a rtsp stream
If you're viewing the website on port 80 using HTTP… you'll see it in livehttpheaders.
ok
not sure I understand you to be honest but thx
If you're viewing another site on a different port, you'll see it there also as long as its HTTP.
you're supposed to be in the chroot until you exit it
I'm just saying the resource you want to download is logged and you can analyze all the raw HTTP headers using livehttpheaders. http://livehttpheaders.mozdev.org/
But the next step isnt working? thats why the other guy told me to compile again
Chicago, ok… downloadhelper helped in the end
which step?
find /lib/modules/2.6.19-r5/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko'
modprobe -l
with 2.6.21-4 in place of find /lib/modules/2.6.19-r5/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko'
k let me do that
ohh hum
actually, it looks like /etc/profile is only read by interactive shells; profile.env is loaded right at the start of /etc/profile and there is no check done for interactivity. do you know what systemwide startup file would be involved for a non-interactive login?
could not load /lib/modules/2.6.19-gentoo-r5/modules.dep: no such fule or directory
But my kernel is 2.6.21-r4 it seems newer
2.6.19-r5 might be the kernel on the livecd
Yeah
ok, what does ls /lib/modules show?
So whats it doing
/etc/profile is only for login shells, but not necessarily interactive shells
2.6.21-gentoo-r4
then use that in the command
that works, thats a ton of modules
Not sure why it wants so show me those?
wel, that's what that command does - shows you all the modules you have
*well
hmm, well the variables in profile.env are not getting set for non-interactive logins…so some preceding step must be causing /etc/profile not to be read if it's a non-interactive login…
nano -w /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 — it wants me to add them to that file. But if i have no clue what they do and they scroll to fast
Do i have to add any?
Minor723, did you select any modules when building the kernel ?
he used genkernel
I picked some things like usb printer support and ati video c ard support and
I did it over
Liquid
with genkernel or manually?
Thought it was broken
Genkernel –menuconfig –installall
Genkernel –menuconfig –install all
well, you might be able to add them later, after you discover some stuff doesnt work with out adding modules to that file
and picked some things
/etc/bash/bashrc has a comment at the top that it is sourced by all interactive bash shells on startup, so that's not the right place either; where in the login/shell initialization process is the environment getting defined for the non-interactive shell?
There is nothing in the file as it is
i think xorg loads modules by itself, so most things should be fine - though i'm not sure, as i have most of my stuff built-in and don't use genkernel
But i want me sound and network to work
ok so im not going to worry about it then you think it will be fine
i'm not sure, i'd suggest someone else's opinion (as i mentioned, my drivers are mostly built-in so i don't know how it works out for modules)
actually, looking at the bash manpage, there's not even a mention of /etc/bash/bashrc — is that a gentooism?
maybe, or a linuxism.
on OS X it goes in /etc/bashrc
aha, perhaps in login.defs ?
probably /etc/pam.d/login, or the equivalent
I think it's a typo in one of portage's color-output scripts
try setting NOCOLOR=true
ahh
it's only cosmetic
that's the module stacking configuration…
how i compline a new kernel with gentoo i want my own dir
if i type ifconfig and im getting an ip from eth1 now will it be the same when its install on my hd?
mzbot, gentoo xsbyme kernel config
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kernel-config.xml
I'm not all that sure what causes bash to pick different dotfiles at invocation — man bash mentions various ones, but it doesn't say explicitly how it can be told to or not to read them
this might be useful: http://wooledge.org/mywiki/DotFiles
Minor723, using dhcp?
configuring the network is part of the installation if you're following the handbook
yeah
config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
dhcp_eth0="nodns nontp nonis"
if you're in livecd or something now, you'll need to possibly configure etc/conf.d/net
that code
i think i need to change it
Minor723, that dhcp_eth0 is an optional line and not fully required
grknight i'm missing files
thanks for the help; i'll read that, and possibly try changing login.defs and see what happens…
Oh ok so ill just leave the file along and install dhcpcd later
alone
xsbyme, please explain in detail
like initr
is mising and system map
to be honest, i'm just trying to add /usr/local/bin to the non-interactive path, but I'm trying to do it system-wide rather than relying on individual users' dotfiles
xsbyme, initramfs's are made by hand or by genkernel.. the manual method will not make one
How do i know if i have an eth0?
k how i make them manuel
do any of the images come with partimage, would it be on the livecd?
is there a place where I can look ?
xsbyme, a very long process
Should i add eth0 anyway even if i t hink eth1 is the network card
you can type ifconfig -a
and that will show you all of your interfaces
mzbot, wiki xsbyme initramfs howto
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Initramfs
ty
if you add eth0 to dhcp it'll just sit there for a while if there isn't any response
xsbyme, follow the mzbot link and have fun
grknight whats the command to add a dir to genkernel
add a dir? i don't understand
could someone please "equery belongs /lib/rcscripts/awk/functions.awk" ? I would greatly appreciate it
you can use config_eth0=("null")
yes like i want /usr/src/linux-2.6.20-hardened-r5
in genkernel its taking the oldes version
sammy:
[ Searching for file(s) /lib/rcscripts/awk/functions.awk in *… ]
sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.9-r2 (/lib/rcscripts/awk/functions.awk
xsbyme, `eselect kernel list` then `eselect kernel set #` where # = number from list
oi, why am I using ~x86 baselayout? I don't even remember
kids, comment your /etc/portage/package/ files!
All stable here.
how does this work 192.168.0.6 benny.homenetwork benny
I might be a bit boring.
I grepped every file in baselayout-2.0.0_alpha4 and none of them have awk mentioned at all.
whwn defining other networked computers
sammy, baselayout-2 is a whole new animal
would 192.168.1.100 beast.MSHOME beast
be an example?
Minor723, if you like
beast is my other computers name
and MS home is the workgroup
I'm noticing this! it hosed my init system, emerged over the top of things like start-stop-daemon and depscan.sh is gone, and my init scipts halt the computer no matter what I do
is that what its looking for?
Minor723, though DNS name != NetBIOS workgroups
Do i even have to do this, will gentoo be able to see remote shares?
I guess I was using ~x86 before it was 2.0.0
Sure, you can see remote shares with smbclient
Minor723, for samba? yes it will.. just put machine names in hosts and not the workgroup name
I'll probably just remove the ~x86 flag and downgrade it and emerge -avuDN system and see what happens.
sammy, i pray for your safe return
I just namp 192.168.1.100/24 to see what is up, and list shares with smbclient. You can then just mount them.
sammy, baselayout is sometimes tough to downgrade
You can make a script that does it for you.
hehe, it's had gentoo on it for longer than I can remember. it'll come back eventually.
I'm seeing this too
someone should have said something, the 1.x branch of baselayout ~x86 wasn't so scary
I noticed a bug that mentioned warning users that all of a sudden ~x86 baselayout was going to fubar your system if you weren't watching it closely
well, the 2.* branch seems hard masked
sammy, it's probably in your package.unmask
it is! and I don't remember why I put it there!
heh
I can't keep enough notes floating in the air to use ~x86 gentoo, though it's what I need. there needs to be more centralized communication between users and developers.
What is wrong with stable?
the same thing that's always wrong with stable "I may be a bit boring"
And you should be documenting what you are doing if you are doing experimenting stuff.
oh, I know, but, please, WHO properly documents everything?
people with much more time on my hand. look, I'm not knocking gentoo
I love it to death, up and down, head to toe, I just don't have the time to keep up with 498 developers notices about what I might break compaed to last week when everything worked just as I liked it
I like stable and booring. Makes my much more productive.
i can understand running ~x86 for something like firefox or kde or whatever, but if you want to stay out of trouble, don't run unstable versions of the system packages
I don't think that's an objective statement
I find much productivity in the features I can only get running ~x86 versions of packages
bI find much productivity in the features I can only get running ~x86 versions of packages/b
like I said, I have no idea why I would have been running ~x86 of baselayout unless something downt he line needed it
I don't make a habit of running alpha versions of ANYTHING
unless I really want to spend half of my time on their bug tracker
I got used to major things being slotted
it's the best we've got until something like revdep-rebuild gets worked more intergrally into emerge
anyway, like I said, I don't have the time to devote to it. for those that do, it's the best distro I've seen going in a long time.
this made me grep my package.keywords for 'sys', and now i have to wonder, why i have sys-apps/man ~x86, twice
see! something tells you you need it and you just add it
you don't think oh man this might hose the system in eight months
which would be just fine and dandy if everyone spent the time to search for existing bugs, update existing bugs and properly report new ones.
it can be a bit high maintenance. I agree with that.
yeah, i see your point… i must've just blindly copied it when something complained without even noticing what it is..
but I'm not going anywhere near bugs.gentoo.org with aproblem with my alpha baselayout. I've seen some junk on downgrading and the pains, but I've become a bit of a baselayout guru recently so I think I can muddle through it. thats how you learn!
I can stick you in front of kubuntu and you wont have to learn much about under the hood. cheers, everyone.
hey guys, is there an easy way to get a missing shutdown button to reappear in gnome?
how do i connect to a network with a hidden ssid?
do i need to know the ssid?
Hey, how would I create a split rar file in gentoo?… nothing seems to have the split archive feature =/
karleeto, well… yes
my kde wifi manager sees a (hidden-cell) network with no WEP turned on i'd love to mooch off of
I don't think that's legal in most places…
kelvie_, if you dont have security turned on its perfectly legal to use a wireless network in your range, at least in the USA
rar seems to be able to
It's quasi legal in my country.
then hypothetically let's say it's a coffee shop, and you just bought a cup of coffee
right?
coffee shop is OK
because they let you
but without their permission
Hypoon, you don't even have to buy coffee
Liquid_Fire, with what switches?
freedom is a precious thing
and they cant do shit but turn WEP on
in which case, they dont have to worry about me
vsize[k,b] Create volumes with size=size*1000 [*1024, *1]
Liquid_Fire, ahh…. thanks.
hey, whats the name of that graphical front'end for portage?
kuroo, portato, .. ?
there are at least 5-10
bonsaikitten, is kuroo a kde frontend?
how would I know
yes, it is
Liquid_Fire, cool, thanks
