I am trying to add a 2nd soundcard onboard to my gentoo system for testing Skype Now the onboard card is the main
so maybe after all my grub.conf is wrong?
can you upload your grub.conf anywhere from that machine?
so, nobody knows?
although I don't see that being the problem, since it's not even loading grub before yo uget the error
given, this isn't the best time to ask, but still, it's driving me nuts
I can't securely do things without getting Tor to realize privoxy is phoning in from the same machine
well.. i could if u tell me how .. but if it cant be the problem it makes no sense i guess.
installation finished. no error reported.
try: grub-install –root-directory=/boot /dev/hda
ok.. says the same.. ive to reboot then i guess..
ill logon on another machine. cu
exit
good luck
no.. didnt work…
hmm…i'm out of ideas then
hey someone told me that there is something like a java slot where i can choose beteween sun and blackdown
eselect
install whichever you want, then use eselect to decide which one to use
unfortunately can't choose ibm hosting with java support or that other one
hmm
bea
lacqui naja.. thanks anyway..
ty
sorry i can't help any more, it's been a while since i used grub-install
what do you mean, ibm and bea don't install eselect profiles?
ok.. anybody else an idea how to fix my mbr problem with grub?
someone whos had problems installing grub before, perhaps?
does emerge use /var/lib/portage/world as source for generating the update list "emerge -avDNu world" ?
it uses it as a start point, yes
firefox has stoped working for me and I can't kill it. how do I see a list of all the current process running on my computer?
what is the syntax for eselect java-vm?
since i have boot on that extended partition.. where do i have to set bootflags?
RNHavens, top
ty
erging (1 of 801) sys-devel/gettext-0.16.1-r1 t lol
on both .. hda4 and hda5?
ive synced /bin /usr /opt and some other dirs from another gentoo installation and hoped that emerge would accept that world file….but now it tells me about packages that use the same slot…?
as far as i know, grub ignores the boot flags
eselect java-vm help
ok
did you install the bootloader to the MBR or to the partition?
lacqui, i mean gentoo doesn't have ibm and bea java in portage
well, that would make it a bit difficult, wouldn't it
that is so much not helpful
:-/
to the mbr i guess.. could i choose?
but, if you manually install it, you can still manually add it to the eselect list
because it doesn't really tell me how to set
well, you can eselect java-vm list to find out what's installed
… ja.. (hd0) .. is the mbr i guess.
yes did that
and I want to put it to blackdown now
yes
but eselect java-vm set system-vm 1 does not work
ibm java is available
eselect java-vm set system 1
aah ok
ty
ya, (hd0) is MBR, (hd0,5) would be your partition
that configuration I haven't tried yet
http://internetworkpro.org/pastebin/711
an idea ?
not (hd0,4)??
eth0 and eth1 seem to have disappeared
where's your boot partition
udev persistent rules
on hda5
check
hda5 is (hd0,4) - hda1 is (hd0,0)
confusing as hell when i first installed it
bonsaikitten, how to check udev config ?
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
checking
ja.. so it should be right… should… or does it matter if theres an extended partition? .. maybe i have to put (hd0,3)??
what is even more confusing here is that my hdd is (hd0)
it should have some MACs in there, delete them
since for idioticy it is the only harddisk on my system
why is that confusinf?
what's wrong with that?
because I would expect it to be hd3
hdd as in /dev/hdd, not harddisk
hd3 would be the 4th HD on your system
does anyone here use exaile on gentoo?
no, hd0 = first harddisk (grub), equal to /dev/hda usually
what do hda - hdc come up as?
yeah /dev/hdd is the only harddisk in that system (due to my dumbness *ahem*)
haha
so after I figured, I found it logicl, too
but It took a while
that is quite surprising
how did you manage that one?
had windows originally
then had 3 harddisk in the system
and put a 4th one in and installed gentoo there
i don't know if it matters being an extended partition
used rsync to sync my local gentoo (bin boot lib32 lib64 opt root sbin usr /var/lib/portage/world /var/db) with another gentoo (identical hardware) but now emerge tells me that kdelibs is somethow installed in a different slot….which is impossible ?
arg… guys… no ideas?
i've always installed it on a primary
my original install was even starting on /dev/hd5
bonsaikitten, yes it what udev thx ):
it works, too
I remember following the install guide, on my first gentoo install. When it said "mke2fs /dev/hda1", i entered it
you get extra support from me
aouchie
bonsaikitten,
did that one too…
trouble was hda was my then-wife's windows drive
bonsaikitten, how are devgeo ?
and erased my (encrypted) server root drive
# what news ?
quite well, but slowly reaching capacity limits
is this a completely fresh install, nothing major on the drive?
no.. just installed windows before. no data.
then it may be best web hosting (unfortunately) to restart, but put /boot onto a primary partition
bonsaikitten, i am not sure to understand "but slowly…" it's good or not ?
probably
well, it gets fully utilized, that is good
sorry i don't have better news for you
what's the best way to emerge wine with oss support?
raventh1, set the use flag?
raventh1, yeah oss is a valid USE flag for wine
k
but somehow i cant imagine that grub cant handle extended partitions…
raventh1, already tried that?
I'm helping out someone in #winehq
it might not be grub, it might be your bios
and I couldn't remember off the top of my head the best way to do it
sebastia1, you can install gentoo anywhere you want on your drive, even in extended partitions
remember, you're getting the error before grub starts, it's a bios error you're getting
how old is your laptop?
raventh1, the kernel settings are a bit tricky…you need verbose support somewhere belos sound support to get full oss support
about 3 years.
/etc/portage/package.use
ja.. right. but still grub doesnt work somehow.. doesnt install correctly although it says that no errors occured..
and then have him emerge -Nu wine
sebastia1, do you see some grub screen after reboot?
some older systems can't handle boot sectors beyond a certain location, i can't remember when that was fixed
but it shouldn't be a problem on a 3-year-old computer
i dont
hm.. ok
sabakas1, whats the partition (fdisk) and what did you told grub where to install to=
just a message "hard disk boot sector invalid"
sebastia1, you could install grub to /dev/hda - to see if it works at all
guys, my beryl is giving trouble. My title bar of the window doesn't appear …
well.. thats what im doing all the time, right?
during installation grub says everything is fine… no errors.
sebastia1, dont know, do you?
only after boot there comes this error message.
Hello anybody listening
?
….annoying freaking newbs
sebastia1, the gentoo guide is pretty good, maybe just skip the grub section again
way to stic around for less than a minute
help me, help me, help me, screw you, /part
used rsync to sync my local gentoo (bin boot lib32 lib64 opt root sbin usr /var/lib/portage/world /var/db) with another gentoo (identical hardware) but now emerge tells me that kdelibs is somethow installed in a different slot….which is impossible ?
http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Shopping/shoppingcart.asp?submit=ChangeItem
….?
im reading it over and over again at the moment. but im pretty sure i didnt leave anything out.
Could you pastebin the entire emerge output please?
Hello all. Can anyone tell me if there is an ebuild for the Python IDE called eric v4. btw, I do know about eric v3 which is in portage
AllenJB, sure
can I get some help with an odd problem please?
it involves rcs
rcs ?
'rc's not revision control system
AllenJB, http://rafb.net/p/zTN7dG36.html
rcs as in rc-update add
Please just state your problem. We won't know if we can help you until we know what the problem is in detail
not in the tree
I have some python stuff I want to load on startup at the very end of runlevel 3
PeanutHorst, local.start is for that
../etc/conf.d/local.start
Available versions: 3.7.2-r1 (~)3.9.5, being 3.9.5 masked
Given depth (8) is not supported by fglrx driver" if I have "Depth 16" in my xorg.conf?
using the command line 'python /path/to/frabjous.py -i 0.0.0.0 -p 5550 -d start'
and i have no idea how
PeanutHorst, put it in /etc/conf.d/local.start
as metalfan stated
someone read it
where do I put the code though?
:p
if u want to "stop" it u can do it in /etc/conf.d/local.stop
lol
if u want
It looks like you're trying to mix monotlightic and split KDE packages. You can't do this.
is Depth 8 in xorg.conf at all?
gentoo metalfan kde split
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-split-ebuilds.xml
no
AllenJB, i know that
mzbot, lol
he is back ;D
lacqui and Shankerpotimous, I know it isn't in the tree. I was hoping there is an overlay that might have it
i have a dv5040us laptop. just the dvd and audio keys doesnt work. i cant even see they keycode with xev, could anybody help me with this?
AllenJB, the gentoo system that ive used as source was working….there was no mixing….now after the sync is broken
it seems that those keys arent recognized
does your error log show anything about depth 16 or falling back to defaults or anything?
not that i'm aware of
Hi. I have a microphone jack on my notebook. If I plug some speakers to it, it has no output. How can I connect some speakers to my microphone jack?
nope
I suggest you start by unmerging the older KDE packages
eg. start by unmerging libkdenetwork-3.5.4
AllenJB, make sense
AllenJB, but i dont understand why emerge thinks that old kde packages are installed
lacqui, thanks for the info.
try adding 'DefaultDepth 16' to your "Screen" section of xorg.conf
guys, my beryl is giving problems. First of all, window title bar doesn't appear, secondly i changed some rendering option for which the X jboss server hosting totally hangs up, how do i change the configuration without starting beryl-manager ?
AllenJB, ive synced the world file and /var/db - so where does portage get its information if not from these files?
fury_ov_da_town, well start the beryl-manager ?
Because you've messed with your package managers files from 2 installations and made it confused
it *should* not start beryl by default
/var/db in particular isn't designed to be transferred between systems as far as I gather
AllenJB, yes…
AllenJB, thought i could just replace the dirs…
ok, will try and then get back, I have to reboot each time I try this cause the system only responds to ctrl+alt+del
man, starting beryl-manager immediately hangs up my X server
http://img50.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc04623vp8.jpg these are the multimedia keys that i would like to make work. the first and the second (svs and audio) are with blue light but doesnt work
fury_ov_da_town, well i assume u delete .beryl
try ctrl+alt+backspace instead
~/.beryl
doesn't do anything
neither does ctrl+alt+Fn
Obviously you thought wrong -.-
and the one without the blue light is the mute key. it work but it doesnt turn the light on when active
is that deliberate? I think there's a setting in xorg.conf to control that
uis that deliberate? I think there's a setting in xorg.conf to control that/u
AllenJB, i will take a shot af the forums - i would like to know whats going on
what do you mean? all the settings in xorg.conf are commented by default so I just erased them from the conf file
AllenJB, next time
hmm…you sure you didn't zap something important by accident?
AllenJB, theres no mixing up from kde-meta and normal ebuilds
what do you mean by 'zap'?
erase.
I think not
How can an ext3 filesystem be 9 % non-contiguous right after I created it? (On a USB flash drive)
how can i download videos from http://www.cbc.ca/sports/player/?
I can send you my xorg.conf though
pastebin it
if you can
When I connect to a service on the local machine, from the local machine, the daemon I'm connecting to thinks I'm actually connecting from my outside IP and not from localhost/127.0.0.1. Why is this happening?
that'd take some time, do you have a ftp server on? that can be done quicker
no i don't, i'm behind a firewall
do you know ext3 well enough to know it shouldn't do that?
guys, my window title bar doesn't appear when i start beryl-manager with window-manager set to beryl
any of you from south africa?
does anybody here has a hp laptop with quickplay??
thanks
done it
any one?
Hi. How can I print via a printer connected to a WinXP machine which is on my network ?
Does that indicate faultiness of the drive itself?
switch to a vt (ctrl+alt+f1) and run "showkey" (man showkey) and "setkeycode"
does anyone here use exaile on gentoo?
i did until recently, what's up?
guys, my window title bar doesn't appear when i start beryl-manager with window-manager set to beryl
setkeycodes. see if the key gets recognized at all
mplayer here
lacqui:did you have mp3 working?
I would guess it is just normal, but I don't know ext3 well enough to say for sure.
i did
doead package.use support wildcards?
*does
lacqui:how on earth can i get mp3 to work/
lacqui:exaile crashes whenever i try to play an mp3
That's an sign that beryl is not working
does it give you a message on console or anything?
Hi. How can I print via a printer connected to a WinXP machine which is on my network ?
everything else is working but the title bar
Oh…
why cant i start xchat after i emerged it?
Gstreamer equalizer element not found, please install the latest gst-plugins-bad package
share the printer using windows file/print sharing, then connect using samba
i think the cups web frontend can do the linux-side part of it for you
try starting it from a terminal so you can see what errors it gives
maybe i should try an older version of exaile, because i have the latest gst-plugins-bad in portage
it says that the binary cant be found
that helped, "(EE) fglrx(0): Given depth (16) is not supported by fglrx driver"
At one stage, it asks me for the Device URI (I chose Windows printer over Samba). But I don't know it
at least you're getting closer
theres no binary at /usr/bin, and i cant find it anywhere on my system
any ideas why the combinations don't work?
//windows_machine_name/share_name
lacqui:could you just remind me how to emerge a specific version of a package?
guys, my window title bar doesn't appear when i start beryl-manager with window-manager set to beryl, however everything else is working ifne
I'd double check and make sure it was indeed installed
i don't know what fglrx supports
it wasnt, thats the problem
emerge =package-name-version
emerge dev-libs/foobar-1.2.3
emerge =dev-libs/foobar-1.2.3
if i compile and install it from source, it works, but then the USE flags wouldnt change and i wont update it when i use emerge -auDNv world
second version, sorry
ty, its emerging
what I'm saying is to verify that the emerge process did not bomb before it was done
it didnt either
Did you try asking in #beryl ?
equery f xchat
i did, but noone is answering there
lacqui:this version crashes without an error
Wrong time of the day, maybe, there used to be pretty wise people in there…
returned nothing
then the emerge was never completed
if you run it from the console, does it leave an error message on console?
lacqui:thats what i mean, no error
for all mp3s or just specific ones?
hmm ill try again
is there any way to use wildcards in package.use ?
according to the docs, no
could it be because i havent reloaded xfce since installing exaile, maybe some environment variables need refreshing or something like that :p
damn
thanks anyway, lacqui
what are you trying to do?
i want to disable ipv6 for all x11-packages
but only for x11 packages?
yes
sorry, i don't know any way to do that apart from entering them all manually
I have done something similar with my package.keywords to have all KDE packages ~x86
doesn't sound likely, but it can't hurt to try
is there any way to request an 'exclusion' of a package when i run emerge? Just say I don't want it to re-emerge one package when I run emerge -e world, is there any way to specify for portage NOT to re-emerge that package?
you could mask it, but that would block anything that depends on it
well, if its in your world file, it will be re-emerged
if you remove it from your world file, it wont be re-emerged, but when you do emerge -uDv world it wont be updated too
you could create a list of packages yourself (emerge -ep world, some grep'ing and sed'ing), then edit it and pass it to emerge, to "simulate" your emerge -e world
It has been built before, but NOW it hits a build error, of which a bug report has been filed, but no progress has been made…
thanks, i'll give it a try
ishino, im not too familiar with the use of sed though
ishino, your solution sounds good though
you could emerge -e world and let it get to the package that doesn't build
lacqui, and then?
then emerge –resume –skipfirst to continue to the next one
lacqui, ah THANKYOU
lacqui,
hi
I assume that package.use can be a folder, like my package.keywords is… Then you create a file with all x11 packages listed and -IPv6
i use a script that does that for me
lacqui, for all the ones that fail?
so i can set my system to rebuild everything, then go away for the weekend
yup.
lacqui, ah clever, but thanks loads
lacqui, im not familiar with bashscript, but learning shouldn't be too difficult, Ive been meaning to do it anyway
is the G in gstreamer for gnome?
anyone know, 'mail' command is inside of which package? I have using sendmail
lacqui, many thanks
mailx, but don't use that. use nail instead, a superior drop-in replacement.
your assumption is correct.
thank you for help, ill try that
what if there has been a bug report for almost a year (unsolved) and I have just added some new info that could help the devs, will they be alerted that the bug has been updated? (Im new to bugzilla)
np. you may need to install a couple packages for that to work completely, but the main part will work
the assignee will be alerted by email, as will any who are CC'd on the bug.
yes
lacqui:strange, root can play music in exaile
lacqui:how can i check what groups a user is in?
kerframil, thanks
weird permissions problem
lacqui:maybe im not in audio group
/etc/group
but that should have given you a permission error
strange, i am in audio group
can I mask a version greater than X in portage? (I don't want zope-3.X.X, only zope-2.X.X)
what's the permissions on /dev/dsp?
how do i check
sorry, /dev/sound now apparently
ls -l /dev/sound
in package.*
hey all - question about distcc - when specifying distcc's hosts, do you have to use specific host names, or can you use a blanket-style address like 192.168.1.*?
they should all say 'crw-rw—- 1 root audio whatever'
pmed to you
mmh.. i can just list every single package in package.use as well, but thats what i wanted to avoid
or, for that case, =net-zope/zope-3* would also work.
looks right to me
type 'groups' on the console
anyone know of a good AIM client thats in portage?
use a CIDR mask such as 192.168.1.0/24
as root or as me?
pidgin
can i write stuff in /etc/conf.d/net for eth0:alias thing?
as you
That works, thanks
that's what i was wondering - that will work, eh?
there are many, gaim pidgin, kopete
I believe so.
pmed
one thats not multi-protocol
i sent both
assuming that's the right subnet mask for you
well, it definitely recognizes you as being in the audio group
and you still can't run exaile?
I'll give you another tip, use the tab key to complete people's names in your IRC client
i can as me, but it crashes when i try to play music
maybe gstreamer has bad permissions
tried to run it from console to get a detailed output?
naim appears to be ncurses based aim
as is ntame
well, the description says that, thanks ill check it out
it's really weird that it crashes without telling you anything
do you have another player installed?
hey, it works. Cool.
You can probably automate it somehow…
how would i add myself to a group?
=app-dicts/aspell-en-0.5* (is blocking app-text/aspell-0.60.5) - Yet I can't unmerge aspell-en. Any ideas?
maybe if i add to video group, because gstreamer also plays vids
gpasswd -a (user) (group)
hello
aha, that did it
user as root
tell me how
adding myself to video group fixed the problem
weird, i don't understand why you need 'video' permissions to play music
can i unmerge a program while its still running? wont it like, stop working..?
changing your UID to 0 should too.
I don't know, someone told me the trick with package.keywords being a folder instead of a file and gave me the list of all kde packages, I doubt he typed all that in manually…
bye
it'll work for a while, but it'll probably crash at some point
ah ok then
i'm almost afraid to ask, why?
that's a bad idea. the user will be removed from any groups which aren't supplied as arguments to the -G parameter.
instead
you have to mask the lower versions of aspell
oh, thanks. i didn't know that
lacqui:
because i want to unmerge pidgin while its running, but i gotta wait till xchat finishes emerging to run xchat
Anyone know how I might go about building libpangocairo?
it should keep running, unless it tries to load a library or something from disk
then it should run fine until xchat finishes merging
as long as the program binary is open, it won't _actually_ be erased
unmerge is a fast process.. so why don't wait?
skankerpotimous, it *should* keep running, but no guarantees
ill forget about it if i wait, and i gotta leave soon, so ill just do what i have to
emerge -av pango
/j openoffice
I did try that, and cairo is also merged
in fact, I've tried three versions of it
well then it wouldn't technically matter if pidgin crashes/breaks at some time(e.g. when it tries to load a library)
equery b /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so
aah. oops.
yes it wouldnt, i was actually thinking about the unmerge progress, because if its running, it couldve not delete some binaries and certain stuff, anything cuoldve happen, then id need to re-emerge and then unmerge it again for it to be correctly unmerged
nope, nothing for either that or libpangocairo.so
nope. when you unmerge it, it tells the OS to delete the file. The file system marks the file as deleted, and finishes the deletion as soon as the file is closed
oh nice
which, in the case of a program, is when you quit
lacqui:
much nicer than a certain other OS that refuses to delete or modify files that are in use
yea
I wonder which os is he talking about
who knows
mac.. its mac..am i right?
:P
could be
the one my girlfriend uses, where you can't delete virus-infected files ’cause they're stuck in memory
never heard of that one before
and I thought I've seen much
i think it's called Doors or something
maybe Walls
yeah, something in that fashion
Actually, Walls makes sense, that's what I bang my head into when I'm trying to fix it
Anyone know about the GNU kernel that hey have been working on sence abotu 1990.. read a book that mentioned it was going into beta soon.. but forgot the name
hurd
?
I saw a funny pic somewhere… windows CE-ME-NT - as hard as a brick, as dumb as a rock, or something like that
yeah something like that
45
so I've established that nothing is building libpangocairo… how can I remedy this?
i think i've seen a similar pic
pango builds libpangocairo
yes, granted, but it did not. I watched it configure, though, and it found cairo.
HEy guys.. stop knocking windows.. coudl you do any better with a OS made by retarted people?
hm is there any way of starting kmess minimized to the tray? (i know its not gentoo-related)
think not, gentooNub
is there some particular version required or a flag or something?
Pinchiukas,
hey, be nice to the handicapped people
lol
o.o xfce updated.. WOOT ^^
lacqui, I am… just say.. they need to NOT make OS's…
How to fix this ?
i have cairo-1.4.6 with X glitz and svg and i have pango-1.14.10
ignore it, it'll go away
ive had that problem too, lemme see how i fixed it
when ?
That was mentioned in the -dev mailing list the other day, the new version of portage is supposed to fix it
it was not supposed to be committed that way, next portage release will fix it
okay
make a dir in it named profiles and inside a repo_name, and then put some word there (i put local, or w/e)
perhaps pango 1.4.10 is broken, then.
then it wont whine about it anymore
inside a FILE named repo_name
1.14.10 not broken
yeah
haha since ive unmerged pidgin, when it tries to load the smilies they appear as some weird big X
1.4.10 not in portage
well, at least it didn't crash completely
haha yea
BRB log in with Xchat
woo im back
anyone knows a good msn text-based client? (like tmsnc)
I mean, one that would be better than this one
if any
Joker, tmsnc and thats it, theres no other text-based MSN client, ive searched it
why text?
k… ill stick with it then!
Joker_-_, it sucks tho, try use one that has a graphical interface (KMess, aMSN, Pidgin, etc.)
caus I like to have my chat related things on my server so they run 24/7 in a screen I can access from anywhere without connecting/disconnecting… Just like that irssi
I actually use gaim (pidgin)
Joker_-_, yea, i used it, until i unmerged it cause it sucks (IMO)
Yeah well… irssi rules. I tought maybe there would be a good msn client too… who knows…
up earlier, I mean my build of cairo is probably broken. I'm downgrading it instead of pango.
add a mouse to tmsnc and it could be okay (just like links)
Joker_-_, whats irssi? text-based irc client?
Joker, you could use bitlbee
yup, irssi is test irc
Taka0, bitlbee is text-based too?
Skankerpotimous, yep
*text
irssi is groovy
yeah, and it has about ebverything youd want from an irc client if you aint in mass nuking/flooding
uyeah, and it has about ebverything youd want from an irc client if you aint in mass nuking/flooding
/u
buyeah, and it has about ebverything youd want from an irc client if you aint in mass nuking/flooding
/u/b
Joker_-_, nice, i use ircii if i have to enter irc from a command line
bitlbee… lets look for that
it works perfect here. Im actually at work atm, but ssh'd on my server at home
Joker_-_, it rocks
Joker_-_, heh
Joker_-_: I wish I could still do that. They won't let me at my new job
even at home, I again ssh on my server to get back my irssi screen…
wow i gotta configure this xchat, it shows a dumb popup whenever someone says a message that contains Skankerpotimous
quit your job
Joker_-_, seem cool, ill look some info about it
Joker_-_: I dunno, I think they shoot me or something like that
it's stable and all..
oh… Ull get shot somehow anyway… lets be shot for what you think is right! IRSSI FTW
Joker_-_: LOL Thanks for the confidence
lol
Joker_-_ Apparently there's internet on the ships now, I don't know if I'll be able to get on freenode though
Joker_-_ I'll find out in a couple months when I'm done at the fleet school
ask here, or search on google for tunnelling (ssh)
joker_-_: Ya, but I'd rather not get charged for trying to circumvent a military firewall
Joker_-_: that'll get me a couple years in Club Ed, I'm sure
goto last statement
anyone here is a programmer or some code monkey?
Joker_-_: Hey…goto is considered evil. You're not using evil stuff like a terrorist are you
joker_-_: i was before i joined the navy
lol
can anyone tell me how to enable usemultiplicity in my perl installtion? It is not available as use flag
you ever tryed to get files other ways that with a fileUpload thing?
joker_-_ what do you mean?
joker_-_ what language?
Joker_-_: Do you know that code monkey song? Code monkey get up get coffee…
I need to code a file upload object that will support multiple file upload from anywhere, to any kind of storage (ftp, filesystem, database, etc).
nope never eard of it
I'm coding that in .net
Joker_-_: What, for a web page?
anyone reccomend a program that quickly combines two avi or other media files into one?
yup asp.net c#…
Joker_-_: Enter code monkey on youtube, there are a few funny videos for it too
Joker_-_: I never did any .net - I did embedded work in C
ill check it out
Joker_-_, ive learned a bit of C# oce, i made a program that would beep your computer as long as it was up, pretty dumb tho
Joker_-_, once*
"The repository at /usr/local/portage does not have a profiles/repo_name" .. huh? what's the deal with the new portage update?
chances are that if it worked on c, theres something equivalent in c# (automated, easyer to use, wich doesnt do quite what you want and takes 50tiems the ressources)
ignore it, it'll go away with the next portage update
techjimbo, either ignore it and wait for portages new update, or you can do a little fix, tell me if you want to do a little fix
Joker_-_: I didn't do any GUI stuff though, it was all command-line or lower-level stuff
laqui; skankerpotimous: if it's not broken, no worth in fixing it. thanks guys.
techjimbo, ok
thats what i'm doing. I dont care bout the interface nor where you save the things
I have to work with streams
it was something that got put into public portage before all the support files were there
anyway… back to work thx for the hint on textbased msn.
ok time to configure xchat
how can i open URLs on firefox?
?
Somebody remind me how to show line numbers in vi?
firefox http://www.test.com
?
:uset nu
Thanks.
lacqui, if firefox is open, it says the browser could not understand the command
np
lacqui, if its not open it will open the URL normally
ok, just a sec
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/mozilla-xremote-client: Error: Failed to send command: 500 command not parseable
Browser doesn't understand command
weird, works for me
ops
lol
well, thats what i get
hmm
Skankerpotimous, and I don't
obviously your entire system is broken and needs to be rebuild
Which version of Firefox are we talking about?
lacqui, aw
AStorm, Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4
Does work here. You've lost
AStorm, aka Bon Echo 2.0.0.4
AStorm, lacqui, what's your firefox version?
2.0.0.4
lacqui, ok then… nvm, ill try just.. uhh idk
http://www.google.com
oh well i guess ill NVM and copy and poaste the links to the browser, i dont want to recompile firefox
Use a binary, heh
mozilla-firefox-bin
CHEATER!!
(unless you're on amd64 or some other more exotic arch)
AStorm, NO CHEATING
lacqui, no, I built my Firefox
AStorm, nah, i use an AMD Sempron 2800+ with keyword86 (dont tell anyone though)
lacqui, and I don't
because I'm on x86-64
AStorm, im no ricer, i just liek compiling mah stuff
try firefox google.com (without the www)
Hello, how can I find the french IRC for gentoo ?
ok ill try
nope, the same
teach geoffroy french
Les utilisateurs francophones peuvent rejoindre le salon #gentoofr ou #gentoo-be pour de l'aide en francais.
how bout the http://?
lol i want to learn french too
ill try
mzbot, thanks you i've tried #gentoo-fr
#join gentoo-be
HAHA IT WORKS WOO
geoffroy, missed
it's #gentoofr, not #gentoo-fr apparently
www.google.com — test
aw not working , i guess its a xchat problem though
as ive stated earlier, nvm about it
hmmm i wish i could align a widescreen and non widescreen on linux like i can on windows
uhmmm i wish i could align a widescreen and non widescreen on linux based hosting services like i can on windows/u
hey.. is firefox version for linux more up-to-date then the windows one?
Shouldn't be, they're both built from the same source
in windows i have firefox 2.0.0.3, in linux i have 2.0.04, and both are updated
that would be a question for #firefox
yes, i realize that, sorry
CyberphaZ, probably yes
Have an nVidia card?
brb
Can anybody tell me what ^M is when I'm using vi to edit a text file?
^M usualy is from the windows cllf line deliminator
Unfortunately this is on a Gentoo box.
Though I am trying to create a batch file for Windows.
I was too lazy to learn Windows scripting, so I decided to use perl on my home box to create a batch file.
do you have fromdos installed?
cant you use perl on the doze box?
But I'm afraid the commands aren't going to come out right.
I'm sure I could, but I haven't bothered to learn the differences.
That, and I pretty much detest Windows.
I only use it because I'm a Windows admin.
as long as you're using perl, it's 99% identical
perl is platform independent, just install active perl and your good
I don' tknow what I'm doing with Windows, but as long as I keep making it work, my boss doesn't believe me.
the obvious answer is to break it then :{
I wouldn't even know what to put on the shebang line, or how to be sure it was in my PATH, or if PATH even exists in Windows.
And put myself out of a cushy job?
hey, your boss would believe you then
PATH does exist the you sould need to change #!Cperl.exe
I think that, as long as the script is named whatever.pl, the shebang doesn't matter
I keep trying to extract a file that's a tar.gz using tar -xvz but I wait for a while and I get no messages and it never finishes anything. I just have to Ctrl-C it
Call me crazy, but I think I'll stick with cushy job and not being believed.
Well, anyway, I've already written the script and run it, I'm just a little concerned with these added ^Ms.
guys, i have two sound cards, however, i use the second one, but everytime i start my computer i have to do "alsaconf" to set the second sound card as default, how do i make it parmanently the default card ?
I have a smb.conf file with write list = @users but when I mount t he shared on another linux box, the folder gets chmodded to 755 (owned by root) and I cannot do anything. It's read only. how do I correct that?
I dropped it on my web server as a .txt, so as to easily move it to the Windows box, but it looks like CRLFs there.
you can put the 'alsaconf' command into your local.start file
that's because windows and linux hosting use different end-of-line symbols
the shebang is irrelelvant unless you run Apache on Windows so you may just as well put /usr/bin/perl to make it portable.
how do I NOT compile hosting kaboodle and kaudiocreator while compiling kde?
how do I get audacious to play mp3 files? seems like it isn't supported by default
guys, i have two sound cards, however, i use the second one, but everytime i start my computer i have to do "alsaconf" to set the second sound card as default, how do i make it parmanently the default card ?
windows uses CRLF and linux just uses CR
Use the mad USE flag.
if you have problems with that, open the .txt file with wordpad or any text client thats not notepad and it will be converted, then just re-save and youll be good
by changing the permissions on the folder/files in question. Apache is not in charge of permissions, the filesystem is (write list is a complementary security mechanism but does not change this fact).
oh, thx
look into dos2unix and unix2dos
I'm not using Apache
pls which variables are available in $FETCHCOMMAND in /etc/make.conf ? hope not only URI and DISTDIR…
anybody?
I'll give that a shot, thanks.
yeah, brainfart on my part - but the point is still valid
read samba where I wrote that
as i said, you dont need anything but wordpad in windows to convert a linux end-of-line symbol to a windows symbol, just open in wordpad, then save it again, it will then show correctly on notepad and work correctly in windows
anyone know the name of the plugin for firefox that makes it seem like your running IE?
how do I NOT compile kaboodle and kaudiocreator and the whole kdegames bunch when compiling kde?
i had one, but i forgot it, search it on firefox addons site
i forgot about it and never reinstalled*
What are you trying to do?
But I have /mnt/server chmodded to 775 and the //server/shared chmodded to 775. When I mount //server/share /mnt/server it automatically chmod's to 755
it looks like you can use DISTDIR, URI, and FILE; what else do you need?
trying to write a shell script that will use aria2c to download distfiles miltithreaded
What's a good tool to use to check disk usage by folder (terminal based only; for a server)?
what other variables do you need?
probably EBUILD
du -c
sorry, du -s
I don't think you get that why do you want it?
well i got 12 Mb/s and sometimes I hit a slow mirror… and it pisses me off
you already know what you need to download (URI) and where it's going (DISTDIR and FILE), I don't really see why you need anything else
OK, so you want MIRRORS or something then?
Will that give me a list of the largest folders?
yeah, i need to know what mirror:// it needs to use
What are you looking for, the largest subfolder in a list of folders or something?
oh, you're talking about client-side mounting. are you using CIFS?
then I can grep all mirror from thirdpartymirrors
AFAIK portage picks a mirror then passes it on to you, I don't know if there's another way
I'm trying to determine where my 26GB of space is being used
it is, mirrorselect… but I'm trying to change it
what I usually do in that case is du -cks /* | sort -n
yes, client side. I'm simlpy typing: #mount //server/share /mnt/server -o username=fiveflat
then when it gives me a large directory (usually home), I type: du -cks /home/* | sort -n
right, but are you using CIFS?
and so on
I don't know if you can do that without patching portage
What does "mount" use? don't you have to specify CIFS with -t cifs?
aight, thanks… i'll patch portage then
Ah, I see. That makes sense
whoops, I typed above without addressing you
I don't know. check with the "mount" command what the situation is. my answer revolves around CIFS so I need to know.
i just wanted to know… didn't wanted to do useless a thing
I just need to remember it as ducks then
before you patch, see if there's anything in there for what variables you can use. It might be there but undocumented
let me try to specify fs type. brb
okay, i'll explore it
ya, the page I found it on actually suggested aliasing it to 'ducks'
that's how I've remembered it ever since
just tell me how it's mounted now.
Why, does it count /mnt as used space if they're all mounted remotely?
maybe…
rather, what the filesystem type is of the present mount.
du just goes by file path, it doesn't know about mount points
add -x to stay on one filesystem
I'm sorry I don't know how to check that. But I did just mount -t cifs and the permissions followed (775)
just run mount, it's really basic
Because Webmin also says I'm using 21 of my 26GB
ya, so du -cksx /*, and so on
right now, I have no idea what you were using and it's very difficult for me to make any credible suggestions.
I am trying to add a 2nd soundcard (onboard) to my gentoo system for testing Skype
in my experience it's usually a logfile or something in a /home directory
I can say this though: don't use smbfs (unless you're trying to connect to legacy systems such as Win9x)
I'm actually using almost nothing
cya later guys
okay, I just ran #mount //server/… etc
what does "mount" say thereafter?
I am trying to add a 2nd soundcard (onboard) to my gentoo system for testing Skype. Now the onboard card is the main sound card and is used by kde regardless what I am setting for example with kamix. I even changed the nuzmbers in /etc/modules.d/alsa and /etc/modules.conf to 0 = emu10k and 1=intel8×0. No chance. I actually believe that its the case because udev is recognizing the intel first. Any ideas ?
Ah! I see what you mean… mount defaults "smbfs"
I'd recommend that you remove smbfs from your kernel entirely. if you run into the same problem again, read up on "perm" and "noperm" in the CIFS documentation or mount.cifs manpage.
do you want to use the onboard card at all, or just the added board?
thanks. I'll remove smbfs. until then I can simply specify cifs with "-t"
I don't think you have to specify it at all. you can also use "name:share" rather than "//name/share" syntax.
Stonki, used 'options intel8×0 index=0' ?
FiveFlat
no. where ?
how do i install compiz fusion on gentoo?
Stonki, err 'options and-intel8×0 index=0' ?
doh
I'll guess you'll find out once the kernel is done
You caught my attention though.
hi 2 all
nvm… found it on the wiki
index=0 means first ?
yrs
Do you have any idea what would cause tar not to do anything when I'm trying to untar a .tar.gz using tar -xvz?
thanks
can gentoo be installed if windows are already at hda?
what do you mean, it just locks up or it returns to the prompt?
tasser why not
he doesn't see free space
if my /var/db gets deleted, what's the best way to recreate my world file? my system works, but portage doesn't know what packages are installed
Stonki, likwise 'options snd-emu1ok1 index=1'
only 57MB of boot
yeah. that's weird though. I'll have to mount that on mhy windowsXP and see what permissions I have…
I should clarify that statement: I don't think you have to specify it once smbfs has been removed.
Stonki, disregard the typos
I will give it a try. thanks
I can't tell. No messages come up or anything and after like 10 minutes I get just bored waiting because it's not doing anything
/boot should be small, 57MB is pretty normal
i deleted part of NTFS, but result is the same
tar xzvf foo.tar.gz
smbfs is pretty much abandonware and should be considered obsolete. I wouldn't read too much into it.
never mind, you already have the v
Yeah, but I didn't have the f
I feel dumb now.
ya, that's important too
you need free disk space in which to define at least one additional partition of an adequate size.
well, then, start typing a tar file in. it's not that hard
as root how do i see what group/user owns a folder ?
ls -l folder
I had tar -xvz filename.tar.gz
ls -ld folder, sorry
lacqui, thanks just saw it in the man duh
i got it set FETCHCOMMAND to a shell script that runs 'env' (or maybe env directly) and it lists all the variables you can use in the shell script EBUILD is available too!
how can I recreate /var/db if it's been deleted?
that's just cheating
by restoring from a backup. or by running emerge -e world and crossing your fingers.
lacqui:
ya, you want tar xzvf filename.tar.gz
otherwise, it'll look for something on the console
kerframil, my world file didn't make it either
i have a strange problem… portage shows me the use flags even without the -v option
what about /var/log/emerge.log then?
is that a problem?
Like if you were piping something in?
http://rafb.net/p/f3fQxR35.html
if you have that, then try running regenworld
yes, i want them only when i use the -v option
check EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS in /etc/make.conf
exactly
kerframil, might be a good place to start … but I was thinking I might have to write a script to go through all the files in /bin maybe and do a belongs lookup on each one to get a list of packages
not set
you can't use belongs without valid package metadata
so forget that ;p
kerframil, is there a place online that would store that data in a searchable format?
/var/log/emerge.log is your only hope
ya know, I just realized I don't have it set either, I have a typo in my make.conf
apparently there is, but such a facility can never be relied upon because results differ depending on certain variables. it's also a hideously complex approach.
I'd give you the URL but I can't remember it (it's in some dev's webspace on gentoo.org).
Is there a way to pause ls (or any other outputs) maintaining the colors and formatting of the normal output? Because piping it into "more" is annoying
kerframil, so regenworld just greps my emerge.log and makes a list of everything I've ever installed, and then deletes it from the list if I've uninstalled it?
can someone explain what im doing wrong here. i want to make a folder and give a certain group the ability to write to it. so i make the directory and use chown to make that group own the directory. then i chmod g+w so the group can write to it, but i still can't write to it with a member of the group
does anybody know how can i use the ipmitool to setup ip address for the BMC ? or the console ip address do i have to do using bios or can i do it with ipmitool ?
i think the difference between -verbose and not -verbose is that -verbose lists all useflags (including the disabled ones) and non-verbose lists only the set ones
Because more strips out colors and puts everything on its own line
i think you might be able to do it with less, but i'm not sure
Just tried, less does it too
zutme, are you trying to create a new file in the directory, or write to an existing one?
hi, I'm trying to emerge -u wine but it gives me an error
media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14_rc2 does not actually support the midi USE flag!
try less -R
any ideas??
AeroIllini, create a new file. i didnt realize there was a difference
Nope
it's not actually less or more doing it
I took out the midi use flag but it still wont emerge
zutme, there is if the file you're writing too is not also g+w
ls "knows" that it's being sent to a pipe, and changes its output format
ahhhhh, that explains it, i have a whole bunch of flags disabled
something like that. if I were in your position and still had the log, I'd probably just parse the package names out directly, unique them, place them into a file then emerge -1 $(filename). "qlop -lqqq" is good for grabbing the names (in portage-utils).
thank you
actually, qlop -lqqqC is even better
AeroIllini, well im going in as the user and saying touch test and getting permission denied
programs aren't supposed to do that, but ls is grandfathered into the old way, ’cause that's the way it used to be done when it was written
you get a sparse list of package names (no versions and no fluff).
zutme, maybe the group also needs execute permission
So it's not to stick it into a pausable form without losing all of the colors and format?
kerframil, thanks, I'll try that
AeroIllini, good point let me check that
try 'dir –color=always'
Ive noticed that gentoo updates a LOT - even the stable branch - is there a way to keep this under control so my gentoo system doesnt require such frequent maintenance of packages?
It's nasty in more, but looks perfect in less
AeroIllini, no dice on that it already had execute permission
that's ’cause less is just better
you could do it in one stroke, emerge –oneshot –ask $(qlop -lqqqC), but you might want to review the list first
and if you like it, you can always alias 'ls' to 'dir –color=always', but i don't know if that'll break any scripts
i.e. sort and uniq it, remove packages that were later unmerged etc
run 'ls -l directoryname', 'groups username', etc. and make sure everything matches
the point is to go about it in a complete manner. a sane world file can be rationalised later.
Maybe I should make one like lsp, with the p meaning pause
You could just not update all the time
kerframil, yeah, the world file will be messy
that would work, and has the added benefit of not breaking things
well, you won't have one. you'll just have to sit down after it's done, look at every package you have (qlist -I) and think "of these, which one would I have ever explicitly defined as an argument to emerge?"
that's really the best hosting way to do it, imho
kerframil, maybe I can cull deps out of the world file later, and only keep the top-of-dependancy tree packages listed, plus system packages
what umask should i put in fstab
so i can have write access to the ntfs partitions
?
kerframil, I'll bet I can write a script to determine if a package in the worldfile is listed as a dependency of any other package in the world file
That's really handy
the world file will be empty if you use –oneshot. but what you say is also possible. emerge udept for something that is capable of removing spurious reverse deps of top-level packages from world. but, in the end, there is no way to do it properly without you calling the shots. just because a package doesn't have a reverse dep doesn't mean you don't want it, does it?
so understand that there is no tool that can guess what you explicitly want on your system.
kerframil, on the other hand, does it really *matter* if my world file is messy? what's the worst that can happen, apart from a dependency no longer being needed but still installed?
On bootup, how do I make my computer execute the command "ifconfig ath0 up"?
kerframil, yeah, I know that I would need to have final audit of my list .. after all, it's MY system
kerframil, no tool can tell me what I want
udept can certainly help you get halfway there.
noone can tell me a nice umask for the ntfs-3g driver ?
LOL
these are about all the tricks that I can think of
urgh, bad nick day
My dad was the one that suggested using more. Figures since the last time he really used any *NIX based system was UNIX
kerframil, I have not used udep before, but thanks, I'll give it a try
kerframil, thanks for your help … off to emerge a whole bunch of stuff
o2o, id try something like rc-update add net.ath- default
how do I get the install cd to NOT boot gnome and just leave me at a command line, as before?
i haven't used more in 7 years
I can't even control-alt-backspace with this stupid thing
o2o, net.ath0*
During a gentoo instalation I dit emerge distcc, it is now compiling lots of stuf from the internets. Is it compiling stuff set in the USE variable?
He also suggested using pg
zutme I did that before, but how come when I press Ctrl+C to cancel it, it doesn't cancel and I have to wait until it finishes?
I would assume that ntfs-3g accepts similar parameters to the core ntfs kernel driver, in which case something like this is a good starting point: umask=007,uid=nikolavp,gid=users
Does any use a nvidia gefroce 8800 gtx on gentoo?
ah, I think I found it
o2o you mean during boot?
well, you know it's not a real unix solution unless there's a dozen alternatives
zutme I did like "rc-update add net.ath0 default"
the USE variable does not refer to package names, rather options that influence how given packages are built (and, in some cases, what other packages they then depend upon).
But both suggestions he made were ancient and superseded
teach root___ use
When an ebuild offers the user a choice, it usually checks the USE flags of that user to decide what to do. For instance, a package that conditionally supports the ALSA Sound Architecture, might listen to USE="alsa" to decide whether or not to compile in ALSA support. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=2
o2o, is the interface working?
zutme It executes and works fine but sometimes I don't want it to start and I press Ctrl+C to cancel it but it doesn't cancel and I have to wait for it to finish try to connect even though there's nothing to connect to
so the answer is no, not necessarily
Ok, but then what does emerge distcc do?
I know people who would say that about unix in general :*
installs distcc
o2o, well the only way i know of to get around that is to either remove it from the default boot or when you dont want it hit Shift + i when booting to enter interactive boot mode so you can stop it before it starts
He doesn't use unix, he did like 20 years ago
Maybe a bit more
Ah, and distcc is something needed during the gentoo installation?
no, it isn't
I was using my parents' commodore back then, learning to program
Wow, at this point it's probably like 25-30 years ago
o2o, if you want to start it manually just when you need it you could do rc-update remove net.ath0 default and then run it manually when you needed it be saying /etc/init.d/net.ath0 start
the ibm was the "adult computer"
it's a distributed C compiler and is in no way required for installation.
You were learning to program and I was still waiting to be birthed
Well zutme I'm trying to do this so I don't have to type so much
some gentoo users like it to speed up compilation if they have multiple hosts to dedicate to compiling.
Then, is it normal for it to have 147 "things" to get and compile?
ok well you could make an alias so you dont have to type so much in your .bashrc
no, not really
What is normal then?
the base system is taken care of by "emerge system" and a stage3 tarball already has a base system built.
I have nothing in my bashrc zutme
o2o, thats not a problem
what is normal is whatever the handbook says is normal (or the quick install guide if you want a shorter overview)
I understood the installation for so far, although the distcc get clearer to me now two.
Oh okay
I use the handbook for installation/
o2o, so you want to make it so you start it by hand when you need it right?
also, I'm not kernelsensei
ya, that would put a cramp on your programming style
zutme I want it to start regardless whenever I turn on my computer, but if I don't need it, I can just press a button or something to stop it
Sorry, pressed the wrong rab
the thing about the handbook is that it is very … "dense". not everything mentioned in the handbook is required.
is there a graphical java debugger in portage tree?
And even in 1987, I still had to wait another 3 years
o2o, well maybe someone else knows of a good way to do that, but the only way i know to accomplish this is to do the interactive boot thing i mentioned earlier
I think it is better for me to be dens, this is my first time on gentoo, I used SuSE en fedora and some other fancy disytro's before.
just a young'un
if you're looking for a realistic indication of what is strictly _necessary_ to install gentoo then check out the quick install guide.
Okay thanks zutme
i was a venerable 11 years old by then
Ok, thank you.
mind, you even the quick install guide isn't so quick anymore … heh.
o2o, which if you do it rarely isn't really all that big of a pain in the ass
Yeah, but my age group sucks really. Most use the computer "2 use aim nd talk 2 friends nd use myspace"
zutme the 30 second waiting time for it to finish if there's no networks to connect to is kind of annoying to me since I'm picky
o2o, is this wireless?
Yes zutme
I will now take napp to wait for the compilation process to be finished :p.
you hilighted me you f*k*** b*st*rd !!
(just kidding)
o2o, ive never done much with wireless on linux. im sure theres a solution. cause this has to be fairly common
Thank goodness, I though I was starting an irc feud.
I honestly know people that insist a monitor *is* the computer
o2o, you might try #gentoo-laptop
Does any use a nvidia gefroce 8800 gtx on gentoo?
k thanks zutme
nvidia geforce 6200, but then, I an just into gentoo.
what's going on?
wiki sn00p| nvidia drivers

hello _AxS_
hey, how goes the battle?
with my wife's help and a lot fo trial and error, we fixed the problem
of*
what was it?
I'm trying to make net.ath0 start on boot, but I can't cancel it when I want to
2 things
one, I had to install kde-meta instead of kde
also, there was a necessary package that needed to be installed too
….ah. well, umm.. that would be difficult.
is the atheros device a removable card?
Yea, how come Ctrl+C doesn't work
It's PCMCIA
dbus-qt3-old
because the program that's running is waiting for IO, it can't be broken out of
that was the file
Awww even though I have no idea what that means _AxS_
aha. ok good to know.
it means it doesn't work.
after hal and dbus is installed but before kde-meta
I thought it was just running dhcp
why do you want it to auto-start when you don't want it to auto-start?
I use wireless half the time
ok. well since its pcmcia, what i would recommend is 1-setting it up so net.ath0 doesn't auto-start via RC (that way it'll start whenever you plug in the card only), and 2-only plug in the card when you want to use it
I still have issues with Kopete and Kmail
Anyone have an Xpress200m that has figured out what cvs drivers are needed to give it dri?
Okay thanks _AxS_
that's what i do. OH, and also turn on parallel startup, so that your system still loads while its setting itself up
How do I turn on parallel startup and what exactly is it?
I know people are getting it going fro dri and mesa cvs now…
/etc/conf.d/rc — its in there. it tells rc to start the various init services in parallel instead of doing them one at a time
Thanks _AxS_

Hey now that ck will drop the work, what kernel patch do you ppl recommend
I know people like that too
what a remarkable name, are you from holland?
What happens if I have both rc eth0 and ath0 running at the same time
positive
I am two.
hmm ^_^
What patch's do you people use ? Viper ? what ?
…you have two network interfaces running at the same time.
nothing stopping that
if you havent already, i would recommend emerging netplug or ifplugd so that eth0 won't start if there isn't a cable plugged in
So…I'd be connected wirelessly and wired?
sure
Wow
Is that possible
why not, its possible to have more than one wired NIC in your computer..
hey guys, whats up.
Oh yea
o2o it can cause problems, though, if both connections are going to the same router
I configure my X with xorgconfig I try and start up X and it says no screens I chose 349 nvidia it still wont work anybody know why?
especially if they're both the same network (eg 192.168.2.100, 192.168.2.101)
screens is not the same as graphics adaptors
Oohh
Sulis how do I fix this?
i just use gentoo-sources
gentoo-sources pwnz
you have to define the screen that you're using in your xorg.conf
Sulis what do you mean screen?
nah thats fine — wifi devices are automatically assigned a metric of 2000+ — traffic won't really go over them if there's a wired iface on the same network
^^
screen is the thing that you look at….
good in theory. the guy across the hall from me (and with whom I'm sharing network) had an issue with using both
Sulis I know you mean the resolution?
of course, he was using a different operating system…
no, that would be handled by the graphics device
hmm. could be an OS difference..
You mean the other OS doesn't have rock-solid network support?!?!?!?!
you need have a Monitor section in your xorg.conf, which defines the horizontal sync and the vertical refresh rates
^ sn00p|
I set that in xorgconfig tho
or at least they leave certain config operations to the user, that gentoo handles with an appropriate default..
ok, so are you sure you set it correctly? if the HorizSync and VertRefresh values don't work then it won't return it as a working screen
That's smart. The operating system for more computer-savvy people has sane defaults, the system for the Joe User needs to be configured properly
