actually vmware-player is a full blown virtual machine. The catch is that you have to know the syntax of the .vmx files that describe the machine. This is not a problem though, because the vmx is a simple text file and the syntax is all over the net.

You can also download them from http://easyvmx.com/ or something too.
Which is a site that automatically generates the .vmx and hard disk files.

Trinity-work, I am sorry, I have no more useful ideas besides trying different kernel versions. You may try the 2.6.22 which is in gentoo, or try booting knoppix with its kernel (whatever version it is, probably below 2.6.21). Actually using knoppix for troubleshooting almost always gives

Aren, if you have set the buildpkg feature option in /etc/make.conf, then you can do a 'emerge -ke' and most of your packages will just be re-installed from their binary images
