I am trying to make a virtual host on apache so that it should send all the jsp pages to tomcat server but if
like gtk, qt, all very good. but if i have to install gnome-* to install nautilus, then there is an issue
no issue
gnome does have issues, kde apps work quite well outside of kde
nasty issues
would I have http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/PDFedit?content=51831 if I installed kde?
urxvt ?
Well, konqueror is part of the kde environment, so you should be surprised if it uses features from other kde apps / libs
vap0rtranz, no there isnt. libs are a perfect solution. when you need the gnome _suite_ to run something, then we can agree theres a problem
I've compiled OOo with USE=odk. Compiles fine, but doesn't install completely
/var/tmp/openoffice contains a subfolder sdk_oo, installed version doesn't
just try and make a script for gnome using xctr to place the damn windows
That's a terminal. I prefer urxvt over konsole
interesting, sounds like a bug
i will check it out
Do you have the sdk installed?
no, I don't have a need for it
shouldn't be*
Hi I built skype and it won't run, giving me an error related to glibC, even though I updated it as part of the dependency…can anyone tell me the problem: http://rafb.net/p/DmwhKL56.html
Seems as if I'm the only one who wants to try it out !?
skype is sehr cocker
possibly … feel free to file a bug
KISS is my point; try emerging something from a WM/DE that you aren't using. Gnome and KDE have to install the most stuff (when those aren't one's WM/DE). the point of wm (and X) was transparency
no german and/or yiddish please
well, konqueror uses almost all parts of kdelibs, that is what makes it so interesting
it's not only a dumb filemanager
and not using libs would mean duplication of effort and functionality
W
i don't mind KDE as much honestly; i installed it to use Rosegarden i think
/opt/skype/skype: /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.5/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.1' not found (required by /opt/skype/skype)
Why do people run openbox on top of gnome or kde
Well, environments like gnome and kde try to achieve integration
/opt/skype/skype: /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.5/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.4' not found (required by /opt/skype/skype)
they are the two erros i get
What DrEeevil said
german add diversity is that not what opensource is about
Bit_Kid, Because metacity doesn't satisfy them, but openbox on it's own doesn't do enough
looks like you did a gcc update and broke some libs
vap0rtranz, duplicating functionality for every app instead of using libs is _not_ keeping things simple
emerge -e world is the cleanest way out
DrEeevil, so should i revdep rebuild?
oh
okay..cheers
I think revdep-rebuild doesn't pick up that special kind of breakage
DrEeevil, okay, thanks heaps for the help
old it's an old debate anyways. it's like trying to say building everything into the kernel is bloated to some people (it is IMHO)
I've not yet a bugzilla account. Is the "real name" the same as my login name? Or will I have to enter my login name later?
vap0rtranz, i agree…i mean when does it stop….if you want every driver that ever has or ever will be…the kernel will be ridiculously huge
"real name" is what will be shown in bugzilla to others
Is there some kind of font pack I can get for X somewhere?
epdv real name is.. how you want the world to know you
So that stuff does'nt look like crap
Solv, you can choose wether you want monolithic kernel structure or not…
especially in firefox
Bit_Kid, emerge corefonts freefonts tt-bitstream-vera
ttf-bitstream-vera*
Thanks, so I probably don't want to put there my "real" real name
with the asterisk at the end?
ttf-bitstream-vera*
?
Bit_Kid, no, it was a typo
k
any reason dmraid would work on the live CD but not on a normal install?
dmraid says no block devices found after normal install
not work? as in not load?
this the bootable/root device?
root
Are those fonts going to make a difference?
and the kernel doesn't panic?
much of one?
well, basically it says no block devices found, then says /dev/mapper/sil_my_raid3 not valid root
so that I can actually read stuff in firefox
no panic
mmm
without it being ittybitty and non-antialiased
Bit_Kid, corefonts will make Firefox better, nothing will make a difference until you change stuff
it asks me to enter a valid one, or shell. so I picked shal
What will I need to change?
maybe go back through the RAID howto again, I had some issues with how /dev was populated when switching from LiveCD to host
it asks me to enter a valid one, or shell. so I picked shell and sure enough, /dev/mapper only had control in it
Bit_Kid, font settings in xfce, gnome, kde, maybe others, there's settings for aa
Bit_Kid, for other wms, I don't know
cap0rtranz, what did you do to fix it?
where do the fonts get put?
now that they are emerged
vap0rtranz, I know it should work, my hardware is known to work and windows is running it just fine.
$ tail -f /var/log/{messages,syslog} or whatever logs when playing around with the raid utils
Bit_Kid, usually /usr/share/fonts/anotherfolder
and what's $ ls -l /dev/mapper look like? some of those are symlinks
Bit_Kid, anotherfolder = TTF, OTF, misc, corefonts etc
I think i am gona one day go though my kernel and clean it out
vap0rtranz, dunno I'd need to reboot. I just added/compiled modules into the kernel
theres alot of stuff i dont need in it
vap0rtranz, I'll be back in a few
* yay toolchain rebuild almost done! *
oh, one last question, I'm new to genkernel, to update the kernel all I do is genkernel –menuconfig all with boot mounted right?
make sure dm* and scsi specific modules are also loading; it actually sounds like the kernel/udev didn't populate /dev/mapper because it didn't load any modules. besides, bootable/root RAID devices must be builtin (not modules) and might need an initrd (almost surely)
i don't use genkernel, sorry; most options are passed at boottime — like "doscsi" in your case; there's a doc somewhere
anyone knows where the gtkmm (c++ gtk) hangs out?
vap0rtrans, should I try udev in the grub.conf file?
definently it's a new install? it's udev
vap0rtrans, at the end of the kernel line right?
yea, genkernel… udev doscsi
unless its IDE RAID?? *gag*
vap0rtrans, I only added udev, I'll try doscsi after, brb. and thanks for your help
it's sata raid
dosata
ok
adding it now, since you insist
does one need coldplug with the latest udev?…udev won't upgrade because coldplug is blocking it…can i remove it without reinstalling afterwards…or will I need it?
oh, the Gentoo Docs don't insist??
vap0rtranz, I dunno I may have missed that.
vap0rtranz, I never used to need it.
pretty certain you can
vap0rtranz, (same hardware, with no raid)
rebooting now
transient, cool, thanx
that's not a 100% positive though
check the genkernel docs then. like i said, i don't use them so this is just my (bad) memory of reading everything
tis alright…I'm doing emerge -e world…and it keeps coming up with blocked packages…is annoying the crap outame
how do i force through package.mask to use a certain version of an ebuild, i tried with = and = and giving the certain version in that file but it just skipped…
godz that thing has lots of options, hehe: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/genkernel.xml#doc_chap2
anyone who knows a good small imageviewer, modifier?
try cat/package-exactversion
err
make that a
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! emerge -e world 967 packages……………….
LOL
I've got a strange problem on gnome 2.18.3, that's sometimes the keyboard turned funtionless in nautilus and gnome-terminal
what do you mean with make that a
that'l take 2 days
then I cann't input anything on them
any suggestion ?
i hope you have something else to play on
vap0rtranz, yes thankfully
i can nx over to my other box
I use gnome-light
cat/pack-version will mask all larger than version, thus locking you to the version you want
gentoo keeps eating my diskspace too. /usr = 8+G ?!
look at /usr/portage/distfiles
du -sh /usr/portage/distfiles
that's empty
0
vap0rtranz, try the /tmp/portage/cache
is there a greek gentoo channel
or can someone speak greek?
vap0rtranz, woops…was your /usr partition….hmm
there's a cron script that purges my /tmp weekly
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/irc.xml
i can't read the foreign words, so i dunno if one says "greek gentoo" or not
-el looks greek to me
basically this 8G is 4 years of Gentoo, … i keep fighting for disk space and resisting the ubiquitous "reinstall'
thx, 1 person in the channel
crappy -_-
why the hole word pick at gentoo?
they are jealous
wha?
Wah?
thanks man, that worked
excellent
Hmm, to mount a ntfs partion the mount satnyix is..
damn.. such a shame to ear about Con Kolivas… i wonder how/to-what change my kernel now =/
WizardJames, mount -t ntfs -o ro /mnt/windows /dev/hda1 os some such, I think
or*
does gentoo have ntfs-3g in?
unknown filesystem type 'ntfs'
wttfff
It does
emerge ntfs3g
I am using it.
"modprobe ntfs" maybe?
thanks. currently I haven't got my gentoo on yet (laptop hd space) but it's good to know for when I need it sometime
WizardJames, Or use ntfs3g, it's very good (and safe)
Ah
yea.. k, um, modprobe ntfs.. how do i make that auto?
/etc/modules.d/autoload I think
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel2.6, add the modules there
close
lsmod should list them all, might be more than ntfs only
Hmm
massive list
hmm, try to see if if ntfs is a dependency
dependency ?
it's the rightmost row in lsmod output iirc
used by or something like that
used by -
0..
look if any other is used by ntfs
Hi all, Can anyone tell me how to install dosfsck command..
Well i am gona reboot see if i got anything working right
I'd expect it in a package named something like "dosutils" or sucj
"sys-fs/dosfstools" — that one maybe?
any insights about why his sd is not considered for inclusion? didn't find any comprehensive texts to that and i'm not technical enough to fully understand the kernel-discussion
DrEeevil, ok thank you
anyone who know a nice image viewer for xfce?
vap0rtranz, I just realised, after my last kernel rebuild I forgot the –dmraid option, rebuilding again….
why not use gqview?
I use xnview for image viewing
hi
tjo
ok thx folks
xnview is hardmasked for being broken security wise..
(for removal)
try mirage or gqview
did you read the interview in apcmag? it explains a lot, mainly the reasons being from the ego of the kernel developers
hmm
go to osnews.com, first post, there's alink in the middle of the text
Dunno which one I used then
thought it was named xnview
what's all this?
or it was similar to that app
dunno, but it's binary only software so we can't fix it.. and upstream is slacking :/
how difficutl would it be to switch back from a 64bit to a 32 bit system ?
I'd suggest you just wipe and install
save userdata
and configs
Hi, people. I just found out that openoffice-2.2.1, qt-4.3.0 and gcc-3.3.6-r1 fail to compile with gcc-4.2.0 on ~amd64. How can I report this as a bug?
no way to save time ?
well, it would at least need a complete recompile of all installed files
should be simple enough, start witht he 32-bit chroot and compile hosting a kernel in it. Reboot into x86 kernel and make the chroot your new /. Of course I didn't try this
*packages
apart from that hkBst summed it up ^^
bugs.gentoo.org
search if that is already a known issue, file a new bug for each app if needed
DrEeevil, I searched , but I cannot figure out how I can see all the bugs filed against a specific package. Just entering openoffice in the searchbox produced only 33 hits. This seems way too little…
no, that sounds about right
Is there some way to bypass the partitioning part of the Gentoo install?
Running Linux is always a great option if you want to share you account with everyone.
default shows all open bugs, not all ever filed
And just write to a location that's already mounted?
and 33 for openoffice is quite a lot
Don't use Linux.
Use Windows!
Running secure linux web hosting is always a great option if you want to share you account with everyone.
don't use the installer?
What the hell?
ignore the confusers
DrEeevil, you mean like cp -ax /* /mnt/hdc1/ ?
what the f?
Fuck open-source.
Noshar, why?
hehe
blackace++
I need to save that quote.
err … whut?
I wonder why people use Linux for servers, not Windows.
"And Chuck Norris"
read my mind..
don't use the installer?
i wonder myself, why ppl use windwos for servers, not linux
xored, So they can use them even after they forget the password?
I have an answer for that
I think the only reason is ASP.NET
haha
but it would ruin the fun
Which is useless imo.
You can do plenty without it.
DrEeevil, aha, ok. So, I need to register and file a bug. Besides the emerge –info output, what else should I provide? The build log? For openoffice it is 9MB…
"Yay look it has .net on the end!"
net is handy, comeone be fair
:P
worked with it the last half year, its ok
whats is not handy is 64bit !
I'm on 64 bit. Got a problem?
for developers…my Eclipse sucks bad times…
lol
yeah eclipse api hosting in the main frame, have always probs getting the newset version run
oh gosh, more 64 v 32 bit wars
damn Intel v AMD
noo no war
I have them both
so do I
Nothing to do with Intel vs AMD
cool name btw
only the part from where it fails to the end
that is usually 100 lines or less
Unless you say that IA64 is better than x86_64 (which it is)
I might upgrade my mobo, CPU, and RAM. :d
DrEeevil, ok, thanks.
what i mean is it's been around for awhile. sparc anyone? pa-risc? now with AMD and Intel in the game, it's all the hub bub
I had no problems running 64bit
haha
with the applications I need and use
SPARC and pointer under C++…pray
for that just run a 32bit browser lethalrocks
lethalrocks, i had flash working on 64bit..use a 32bit browser
I have problems with one wireless card (32bit only binary blob), flash and a few other bits
just use a 32 bit firefox and there you can have flash
also windows refuses to boot
I'm not too bothered about flash
DrEeevil you got Grub?
also, nspluginwrapper works nicely
yes
Just revert a version
worked for me
then windows could boot again
nah, it's 4G of ram killing windows
lethalrocks, vesafb-tng vs vesafb isn't much different….just a little trickeier…well at lkeast I haven't noticed the difference
and nspluginwrapper is even halfway stable by now xD
wierd
even the installcd refuses
I see it as a bonus
oh
I thought we were talking 64bit Gentoo
Solv, I'm on a crt, and 60Hz has some image stability issues, not to mention eye strain
it's the price of progress … windows is stuck in the dark ages
nvm
you mean i pain
yes, gentoo works superbly, just … windows doesn't
hehe
Lol at Vista.
lethalrocks, but it's only for your bootsplash?
both Windows XP 32bit and Vista 64bit runs fine
Not much of an improvement to XP.
do you had installed gentoo before windows ?
32bit windows can only use 3,5ram thou
Apart from the Aero thing.
Wirth's Law
Which is like a cheap version of Beryl.
windows worked, it's the 4G of ram that kill it
Solv, I don't have a bootsplash, I just sometimes use the console
no.
lethalrocks, ah, i prefer console with no vesa
looks like -2GB to windows because it uses a signed int
Why is everyone comparing Aero to Beryl?
definitely yes, it worked until I upgraded
64bit won't make this bloatware much faster. We got to get EVERYthing in memory, i'm talking 80G RAM
LOL
Like its the only thing with effects
because apples are better than pears
it wont kill it, it just cant adress the whole ram until its 32 bit
DrEeevil:
Because Aero is like a cheap hosting version of Beryl.
yeah, fail
Question, if i got my mic working on my sound card, id have sound working too right?..
It cant be that shitty that XP, or can it ?
language.
sorry.
also, enough windows stuff
wasnt a offnece
wow WizardJames , people usally get the sound working and asks how to get the mic to work
O jez this is sooo cool, i got my mic boosted max with the mic amp boost. and i can hear myself.. though my headpphones
Hello people
WizardJames, Mute the mic playbck
I'm having a problem with building UML
WizardJames, the novelty will wear off
:|
"building UML" ?
Yea well.. its kinda cool
now that sound like a hell of a thing
what's UML?
+ i can hear people walk into my room if i got my headphones on..
solussd, User mode Linux
Solv, *
usermode linux or universal modelling language
WizardJames, well at least you won't get stabbed again
never heard of uml
okay
Linux on linux on fedora linux on linux…
I never ..haha i can hear my self type.. jez this is a loud keybored.. i never got stabed.. i did have a stroke last year though..
Any idea? http://pastebin.ca/632943
i thought it must have been something markup language
WizardJames, i was just imagining a situation
looks quite nice … "no such file or directory" ?
I never ..haha i can hear my self type..
I've never used a keyboard I couldn't hear.
Well damnit, i gota be missing something casue i still dont get sound from things say..system sounds
maybe you want to use an older kernel version for that
WizardJames, have you got alsa-tools
DrEeevil, why wouldn't 2.6.23-rc1 work?
Yea
use aplay
Hmm
UML is one of the major devel modes of Linux kernel…
and see if you can hear a wav file
what WM are you using?
also use alsamixer
you optimist
kde
WizardJames, turn off artsd
was using alsamixer to mess with the mic
DrEeevil, unless you tell me how to set up the kernel for qemu…
go into the control panel, and get rid of arts…then you might start hearing system sounds…also make sure your wave volume is unmuted
use virtualbox /lazy
so UML is like a virtual thingy?
in short
DrEeevil, that is in portage?
How do i "get rid of arts"
should be
I'm a bit confused by these documents
~
Why qemu?
I like vm.
yes, uml virtualizes a full linux kernel
vmware
Maxdamantus, VMWare is too large
Whatdya mean?
not free, so I can;t recommend it
Orly?
It is free.
vmware-server is
http://vmware.com/ check the site.
The player and server is.
-workstation isn't, that's the interesting one
Maxdamantus, s/free/free as in beer/
also it's not open source, makes tracking errors harder
and Qemu works
Wait, I think the workstation is free now too.
gcc 4 cannot build qemu"
diaspar, not anymore
emerge vmware-player : ok.
unmask newer version
AStorm, Just tried it.
known problem
diaspar, you can just download the installer off the site.
Not everything you do must be automated with one program.
vmware-player is quite useless for most things as it can't save changes
export CC_PARALLEL=4 — *muahahahahah!*
So i should remove arts from my use flags?
DrEeevil, can't save what changes?
use portage where you can
all changes, including filesystems
What do you mean?
MAKEOPTS="-j4" is usually better
You can use a hard disk image.
DrEeevil, no, you can hack the vmx file by hand. You can create any virtual machine you like. It is not at all hard.
And it acts as a normal hard drive.
ah, still silly because you can't update it
Which you are able to partition like a normal hard drive.
vap0rtranz, or even JOBS="4"
What do you mean "update" it?
Enlarge the size?
any change will be lost upon restart
DrEeevil, what change?
Partitions?
so every time you start it it is the same
No it's not.
oh?
I thought it had that limitation
DrEeevil, so I'll try virtualbox this time
It can write to the hard disk file..
As if it was a normal hard disk.
Also, when you close it, by default, it saves the RAM to a file too.
So you can load the state.
i think i'v lost my windows manager on my account using gnome… how know how i can get it back?
actually vmware-player is a full blown virtual machine. The catch is that you have to know the syntax of the .vmx files that describe the machine. This is not a problem though, because the vmx is a simple text file and the syntax is all over the net.
You can also download them from http://easyvmx.com/ or something too.
Which is a site that automatically generates the .vmx and hard disk files.
AStorm, Actually qemu fails to build wtih gcc4 now, but I am on ~amd64. Probably on ~x86 this is not an issue anymore, as you say.
ah, I thought it had more restrictions
DrEeevil, the player doesn't really have many "restrictions".
It's just a simplified version of the workstation.
DrEeevil, I even came across a site once, that asks you a few simple questions about the virtual machine you need and then generates a perfect vmx file that you only need to feed to vmware-player.
diaspar, nope, they didn't port the gcc 4 patch
I use Windows under vmplayer, so that I can use Flash 8 (The developer) natively.
ah, nice
Works fine.
can anyone recommend on a SIP VoIP client other than ekiga?
i want to, as a user, create a root filesystem (in, say, a tar file or iso). what's the nicest way to do this?
quinton, what sort of root file system?
Zap-W, how bout linphone?
quinton, it's just a bunch of file
WOOT, sounds working
*files
but you won't be able to chroot into it w/o root
Maxdamantus, any?
hah never used a cli for sound..kidna cool
DrEeevil, why does virtualbox require huge Xalan?
AStorm, i would like to pretend chroot, but really i just want to be able to make/modify it
it's not possible AFAIK to pretend chroot
AStorm, because i want dev nodes and difficult attributes i can't just make the files and tar them
quinton, you can't pretend to be root in a chroot.
quinton, of course you can
xml madness I guess
Because a chroot involves using the proc of the current system.
people should stop abusing it
DrEeevil, s/xalan/xerces/
Maxdamantus, i'm sure it's possible
I always mess these two up :p
Nope, you need to emulate the kernel.
I'm fairly sure.
I think they are messed up enough on their own
actually, it requires both of them
Maxdamantus, okay, you're right
i have lost my windows manager on my account using gnome… how know how i can get it back?
Serees, try running "metacity" in a terminal.
If you mean the Window borders.
Not sure if metacity forks it's self.
DrEeevil, I'm a bit unhappy, because for what I want to do, UML was the easiest
(testing initramfs)
AStorm, how can i do that?
stop I meant to say
Maxdamantus, that did the trick… but indeed does not fork itself
now how do i fix it that it wil also work on login? :p
You could screen it.
without having to enter the command manully each time? :p
Uhh.. I think GNOME is meant to autoload metacity on startup.
wel… it looks like doing it when i'm loggin in as root
but not when i'm logging in on my own user
See if you can auto run programs on GNOME startup.
I don't use GNOME.
I use a mixture of XFCE and KDE.
are you using an X login manager (eg: xdm, gdm or kdm)?
xdm
basically, XFCE with the KDE kicker.
TaD, i'm using xdm
Hmm.. I want to switch back to Gentoo.
heehee
then you need to look in /etc/X11/Xsessions I think - it's been a while since I played with xdm (and gentoo), so I'm not too sure how X sessions get started these days
I'll see if this crappy computer's sound card will work with Gentoo some time.
xmd! yay
then do so?
xdm*
ques, on windows (yea yea ) if I have unrecognized devices i look up the vendor/device id (for pci atleast) in either the registery or device management depending on the windows version. anyways, now I always use the linux pci database on pciids.sf.net to look them up. since i run linux on my
laptop i should have a copy of this thing lying around somewhere (the kernel and/or lspci use it) is there a way that anyone knows of I can just look it up on
Frigolit, if the sound card from this old computer works with Gentoo, I will.
what card is it?
ok TaD, i'll check it out
If not, I'll try getting Portage working on here.
Frigolit, it's onboard.
the WM is conf'd by by /etc/rc.conf
well, onboard what
what mobo
It works on the LiveCD.
I never managed to get it working in the proper installation though.
hm, sounds like a kernel config issue to me
Which I have tried 3 or 4 times.
Maybe I should try the 2007 version.
/etc/X11/Xsessions does not exists
Frigolit, that's what I thought.
it doesn't matter what gentoo version you're running, the kernel is probably the issue here :p
But I had tried reconfiguring and compiling the kernel many times.
pci-ids database is stored in /usr/share/misc, grep might help you
you could try running lspci or something to see what soundcard it is
The modules didn't seem to work though.
vap0rtranz, i think my issue is user related… beause root does have windowborders when i login, but my user does noet
not*
Can't remember what they outputted.
f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev
user differences? I would compare /root to ~/[user]
Oh that's easy
You need intel8×0
Don't help me now.
sorry, it's /etc/X11/Sessions — but you might want to see if there is any info in /var/log for xdm, it might be able to tell you what xdm is doing when you log on as a normal user
don't? okay…
I'm SCPing my Gentoo chroot (Ubuntu sucks at compiling) to my box.
well, the Intel AC'97 Audio Controller in ALSA-PCI should do it _
Because the hard drive is fucked, and took me ages to get an ext2 partition on it.
And the installer crashes when trying to scan the hard drive.
:b buy a new harddrive?
But that would be the smart thing to do.
Plus, I only want like a 10gb max one.
^^
And people I know don't really have them that small.
And can't be stuffed shipping.
Because that would cost what the hard drive would be worth.
why have a hdd with 10gb disk space
not really worth it, runs out pretty quick
some of us are poor
Hmm
I only want it to run a few things.
hence, open ~ free
true :/
mpg321 gets alot of feedback from something.. wonder if thats jsut becasue of the app
brb… gonna check the changes i'v made
A BNC, HTTP server, SSH server, with PHP.
(make -j 4 is making it FLY! fly!!)
Also, I wonder if once I get it set up.
oke, i thought it was your workstation _
I could make a USB cord attatched to my main computer's power button.
I just installed Gentoo on a 4G disk
So I could remotely send a signal through it, and turn on my comouter.
ok, i got my borders back now…. so i guess it worked
yay!
vap0rtranz, this one's 6gb.
i use wake-on-lan to boot my workstation when i'm not home
thanks, everybody who helped
yea but it's failing
I was going to use my 80gb hard drive, and share it as NFS.
Like it doesnt get distoretd till around 30-40 secs playing
But the BIOS doesn't like it.
Nor did it like my 250gb.
that actually work?? that's a BIOS enabled thing on old hardware, right?
250Gig?! LOL
40gb worked though, but I have my Linux installations, and home partition on it.
"Wake on PCI" something
vap0rtranz, what?
I wantz 250Gig of RAM, anykind, EDO even
I never said 250gb of RAM.
250gb hard drive.
i have some BIOSes that have that but never tried it. anything you do kernel wise?
nope, just the BIOS
Which is one of the things holding me back from upgrading my mobo.
i realize that. i'm saying hard disk sizes are ridiculous
I'd need to use a PCI IDE controller.
well, lunch now, bbl guys
Don't want to put my 370GB of hard drives and their data to waste.
people will actually buy a P4 megadesktop with a wopping 512M of ram. just silly
If I didn't set the truetype and type1 use flags when I emerged xorg…am I screwed for font support now?
Anyway, I'm gonna go to bed.
Gotta wake up earlier, because my Mum's away.
So I need to make my own breakfast.
Bit_Kid, Just enable them and emerge -N xorg-server
vap0rtranz, "wopping"?
512mb isn't much.
enable them?
Even my mobo's max, which I have is twice that.
Bit_Kid, in /etc/make.conf
I'm being sarcastic
K i think i fixed my sound.. it was having petty much that give sound..maxed in the mixer
boy that kills that fun
Oh.
Is that going to mess up my configs for X at all?
I think the NTFS partition it had on this hard drive must have been fucked.
It was bloody loud, but now it's fine.
Bit_Kid, You might want to make a new one with xorgconfig or some such
language.
Sorry.
xorgconfig doesn't really make the config i want
Is "screwed" ok?
for my laptop
i guess i could back the one i have up
Bit_Kid, edit it then.
I already edited one…I have it all set just right.
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
thx, but I kno how.
:p
Meh, 'night
Tomorrow I'll see if my SCPed Gentoo will boot on my box.
Also, does the installer just copy all files from "/" (apart from /dev/* and /proc/*) to a mounted partition?
Then install the selected packages?
I think it unpacks a stage3 archive
Although I've never used the installer, and don't plan to
How did you .. erm.. Get Gentoo?
Or did you not?
I used an Ubuntu Live CD, then followed the handbook
(I have cd-burning problems)
Lol. Ok.
It'll be Ubuntu.
I can't burn CDs with it either.
it teaches you a lot, then handbook
oh, lol
Always screws up at like 80%
Maxdamantus, No, I was using a worse OS than Ubuntu
Almost said the naughty word there, then remembered.
Oh. Right.
thanks for keeping it clean
Np.
'Night
(For the third time)
3 %_ThePhantom_!*@*
* #gentoo :End of Channel Ban List
I can see the ban list..
not all of it
Maxdamantus, gentoo has a long list
back to sleep
iptables anyone? I enables all non-Experimental stuff in kernel under netfilter in the kernel menuconfig, but I can't use "-m state –state …", I don't know why
Hello. I have problems with my fresh gentoo install, some webpages dont load as they shuld while others do, i tried both firefox and konqueror wget also gives me problems
Oh.
might want to try #iptables too
thx will check it out
any advice on my problem with http / wget / mail?
anyone here can tell me if 'proc /proc prodc defaults' in /etc/fstab still important in gentoo now?
ye
yes
it's always important
But In fact, I've commented it out. And the system still boots fine.
I was thinking If init script for gentoo automatically mount this for us.
maybe
But that's why I want the confirmation here.
i can't confirm
i'm using baselayout2 which is quite "unstable"
Anyone know a light (preferably gtk) pdf viewer?
kpdf
xpdf
or adobe acrobat reader
!light
:P
adobe acrobat reader is light
jacekowski, evince
jacekowski, its light, its gtk2, and reads a whole bunch of formats
nolimitsoya, brings in too many gnome defendancies
I'm using xfce
evince is nice
xpdf, or just Ghostview was it?
lethalrocks, im using xfce as well, and its fast as ****
acrobat use about 40 megs of ram
nolimitsoya, I just don't want the gnome stuff
yea ghostview, standard ps viewing
I personally use adobe acrobat … even if it is a bit slower … it was the only one to correctly print and show my university pdf documents
the others did not
lethalrocks, each to his own, but its realy not bad in the least. wont cost you much in overhead, since most of it wont be loaded anyway
I'm compiling epdfview
O.o
pdftotext
hehe
only 2 deps
oh they removed ghostview from portage
damn them
5 depends more or less is not a problem … tbH when you install the another thing, you will have the same number of dependencies … dont make your decision be dependent from the number of dependencies
you mean gsview?
Santanabaer, evince had a screen full of them
I think I have a little problem. MY SDCard reader can't seem to read the card. I'm hoping it isn't a hardware problem.
it's still around..
I relay need help with my problem with wget/firefox/thunderbird/konqueror "Stopping" in the end of trancefer
oh there she is!
ty
hello everybody, i forgot the name of the open source vnc client to connect to a windows machine, any help please?
hmm lethalrocks
vncviewer?
no he means something else, forgot its name
was in portage though
how many packages are overall installed on your system @ lethalrocks ?
It registers the card is there, but I cannot access it.
Santanabaer, no idea
ah ok ^^
there's several
rdesktop
nxserver?
lightest to compile please ?
rdesktop
yes i remember, thank you all !
james___ sometimes crashes, but very fast
How does wget "stop" at the end of a transfer?
not at the end
you mean we are able to do a desktop remote connection to a windows machine ?
wow
it just dies and dont trancefer any more.
any ideas people?
program lives and wait
yea you havve to enable "Shared Desktops" or whatever MicroHard calls it
or havve a Terminal Server edition (NT 4.0 speak)
Trinity, when you try resuming the download with wget -c what happens?
it resumes then stop a little later
great vap0rtranz
just as the first time i try
emerge and emerge –sync works nice
that is what bothers me
Trinity, as far as I know emerge uses wget to fetch files…
diaspar, you are right, then its site specific?
is it bad when its taking amarok over 15 mins to build a collation?
depends on the number of files ?
Trinity, this doesn't sound like a software problem, more like a network problem. Yes, you can try wgetting files from different sites to see which are stable and which are not.
but 15 minutes is far too long
dont you see any progress ?
Trinity, or you can simply complain to your ISP
diaspar, i had the problem with firefox addons, and then i tried to wget them instead. and had the same problem
diaspar, I work at an isp so that is not an option .-)
Santanabaer, o i do.. i just got 40K sougs
songs..
just is good
I think my collection is @ 500 maybe or 600
heh
I barely am not able to listen to all of them, I can't imagine how you do
diaspar, this comp im sitting at is on the same network (nat) as the other comp i have problems with. no one on the office have the problem and with vista (ugh) it works
Trinity, you can try flood-pinging the other comp (unless it will be considered an offence) with ping -f and see the percentage of lost packets.
I wanted to ping flood myself once never was able
heh i did it once..
0% packet loss on 80k packets
its my server… i got a gigabitswtich, but my routers still at 100
can someone help me to upgade gcc from 4.11 to 4.12 ?
gcc-select -l
ohh crap
Trinity, damn, this more or less rules out the network problem idea.
just noticed one big issue
diaspar, changed the sise of packet to 65000 so its not mtu ether
that looks really bad
brb
take a reboot
-.-
getting this error after 30min merging
Trinity, but I also seriously doubt that wget is at fault, this is a proven and tested workhorse program.
scince wget works with emerge i doubt that also
diaspar, im quite at a loss to what this error can be.
Trinity, when wget works with emerge it mostly downloads smaller files, 10MB. What filesize you download when you run it manually?
re
diaspar, i downloaded firefox plugins less then 1mb
phew … luckily it disappeared … had a login init failure with su lol
Trinity, and they stop before they finish?
diaspar, yes then i ctrl+c start again with -c it stops, i start it stops i start and its done
[1] i386-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.1 *
I am off
5 :12 am
um. you shouldn't have that.
Trinity, I got some crazy idea that you may try. Do you have a tmpfs mounted on /dev/shm ?
emerge world need it
diaspar, shm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
no……. unless you're on a sub-i686 box, you should not have an i386 compiler.
Trinity, If you have, you can cd /dev/shm and run wget there. So it will download the file direcly to RAM, No hard disk access.
Trinity, see if it behaves the same way or not.
can you repeoduce that error?
i wonder why his gcc fails … hmm
not really
always same error
tried 2 times
ok, if it is the same then it's not a hardware problem
mind pastebinning emerge –info?
diaspar, it behaves the same, i also tried to download the file from server box here at the office to rule out all internet connection/internet problems to that file
emerge –info: http://rafb.net/p/RmpPUw11.html
what processor do you have?
VIA Nehemiah
Trinity, well the next thing I would probably do is to boot knoppix and see how its wget behaves. If it is fine, then you probably have a software problem: either the network device driver, or wget.
C3 ?
diaspar, the strange thing is that i can emerge stuff nicely (including downloading and saving file)
yes
not an i686
Trinity, did you try re-emerging wget?
you must use it as i586, it lacks the CMOV instruction to be an i686
diaspar, im currently running a emerge -uavtDN world to update everything to see if its a temporary bug
diaspar, wget have nothing to do with firefox, thunderbird or konqueror?
so the only way is to reinstall complete ?
yes, use an x86 stage and use i486 or i586 only
or only to set flags in make.conf ?
swat wont seem to let me in. i have given it all usernames and passwords that i got but simply prompts again
talking about samba's swat here btw
Trinity, yes, I think it has nothing to do with them. What kernel driver are you using for you network card?
make.conf: http://rafb.net/p/zvIaKW62.html
2.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev
b:0f:9a:6f, IRQ
i'm getting an 'unknown symbol in module' error when trying to insmod it…how can i debug the module?
Trinity, what kernel version?
doh never mind found it in tuturrial
try compiling kernel and module again and both with the same compiler
diaspar, 2.6.21-gentoo-r4
DrEeevil, i have…i can try again….oddly enough, if i build the module on the machine i'm on now, it works without a hiccup
can a clock skew break compilation of gnome-base/orbit ?
does the compile complain about clock skew?
potentially yes
Trinity-work, see if you have some strange entries related to the network driver when you run dmesg
yeh just before it dies
some build systems check timestamps
if thats so, i'll have to wait it out
diaspar, its quite normal, the only thing i can see is Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = 4685718731 ns)
my timezone wasn't set right this morning
make checks it extensively with file times - don't go back in time or you'll have troubles
indeed
I was 10 hours ahead this morning
forgot work?
lol
Aren you are in the future now
Santanabaer, that depends =P
well, then, you need to compile things again.
oh well
why wasn't your timezone set?
it was set
it's just /etc/conf.d/clock was set to UTC
Trinity-work, I am sorry, I have no more useful ideas besides trying different kernel versions. You may try the 2.6.22 which is in gentoo, or try booting knoppix with its kernel (whatever version it is, probably below 2.6.21). Actually using knoppix for troubleshooting almost always gives
good results…
diaspar, ok, thanks for giving it a shot ill mess around and see what damage i can create .-)
Trinity-work, good luck
Anyone know if grub is still incapable of booting from/to LDM?
Trinity-work: what's your problem?
SkunkyFone, wget, Thunderbird, Firefox, Konqueror "stops" in the middle of trancefer on what it seems specific sites
DrEeevil, any other suggestions on how to debug the kernel module? or at least find out what the missing symbol is?
is there a quick way to re-emerge a package's dependencies?
I suggest compiling kernel and module with the same toolchain and configuration
not really, emerge -e tends to be overkill
DrEeevil, in the process of that now
depmod
jacekowski, i'll try that
SkunkyFone, any ideas on how to solve that?
Aren, if you have set the buildpkg feature option in /etc/make.conf, then you can do a 'emerge -ke' and most of your packages will just be re-installed from their binary images
adeel_n, thanks for the tip
Aren, although that option must have been there before you compile the packages
I am trying to make a virtual host on apache so that it should send all the .jsp pages to tomcat server but if I write "JkMount /*.jsp" and try to restart apache it states that "JkMount needs a path when not defined in a location"…any solution for this error?
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Apache2_and_Tomcat5#.2Fetc.2Ftomcat5.2Fjk2.properties , i am using this method
Aren, although you can do qpkg i believe and make binary packages of your system, so you can re-install the packages without having to recompile
qasim, you might be able to use the apache proxy feature to just proxy the request to your tomcat server….i don't use apache much so i couldn't tell you the exact way how
anyone here good with samba?
i need to know some stuff about users
teach spat about ask
Just ask, don't ask to ask, don't ask who's familiar. Don't ask if anyone knows about it. Just ask the question, it's the easiest way to get people to answer
spat, ask and thou shalt receive an answer, maybe.
how do i install jdk/jre in amd64?
for firefox that is
oh, pain
DrEeevil, haha it looks that way
gentoo adeel_n installing java
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/java.xml
just adding a user in samba doesnt seem to work unless i have one on linux, i want to make a user that has no rights at all (like a guest user) and is only used for accessing a samba share from a windows client
how do i set that up?
vague`: any ideas?
i guess i am looking for the right params for useradd
