hi i m trying to watch a video with xine i had to rebuild xine-lib with theora for that the video plays now but
your best bet is to examine the partition table using e.g. fdisk. if that can't read a valid partition table, you're out of luck
I tried reconfiguring my router to be passwordless, but… it seems the liveDVD isn't detecting my wireless adapter (PCI card) as a device..?
[Shiba]: cfdisk shows the partition there
or at least not as a network interface
i was thinking perhaps commercial recovery software. depending on the filesystem there might be tools available. there are more for FAT/NTFS than say EXT3 and the like
xfs_check segfaults??
hays, a segfault from the program probably has nothing to do with fs corruption
what happens when you try to mount it?
hi ?
My only segfault problems on otherwise known working apps were using crazy CFLAGS… and I've stopped doing that now
how do you scroll up in a terminal with no scroll bar?
[Shiba]: it just tells me to specify a file system
jsin2e, usually shift pgup
howto update webapp-config in gentoo, anybody ?
xfs_check seg faults, according to the manpage, when the file system is very corrupt
currently running x86_64, plausable route to convert to regular x86 without wiping and starting over?
yup, thank you Possum
hays, Ah, okay… if it's "very corrupt" I don't have enough experience with xfs to help you
I am having a problem with installing Gentoo on my PS3.
could moving from x86 to x_64 have anything to do with it
gentoo vertigoacid 32-bit chroot
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/howtos/index.xml?part=1&chap=2
jsin2e, another option is to run everything in screen and use ctrl-a [ to enter "copy mode" … this works even from the various vt's while shift-pgup usually won't work
vertigoacid, it's possible, yes
no, I don't want a 32-bit chroot on this system. x86_64 was a dumb idea for me to set up in the first place on this machine, I get nothing but headaches and incompatability, so I want to just go back to normal
messy?
vertigoacid, a bit
you have to grab gcc, glibc and binutils binary packages
for x86
uhm, nah
won't work
hiall, im trying to use a usb-ps/2 adapter.. but no matter i use PS/2 as my mouse device in xorg.conf my system doesnt recognize it
When I go to do an "emerge –sync", it compalins that arch.list is not available, and that profiles/updates is not available. and then, rsync complains that name or services aren't known with rsync.gentoo.org, also, I cant access gentoo.org or any of the mirrors to get a portage snapshot but
I can access every other website
you just need gcc for x86
then, you set the CHOST and profile, and rebuild everything
hmm, still won't work
wget -S http://gentoo.org
sorry, you're on your own
yeah, I figure it's best to just backup /home and start over
the problem is that x86 wants /lib to be 32-bit
on x86_64 it's 64-bit
resolving gentoo.org… failed: name or service not known.
some programs (esp. gcc and python) rely on /lib and /usr/lib being correct
cat /etc/resolve.conf
a ping works on google.ca but not on gentoo.org
midnight, dead route?
hmm, no, a dead server
hah, a live server, but with ping filtering
I guess why
# cat /etc/resolv.conf gives me "search chartermi.net / nameserver 24.159.193.40"
I have hear that libtool link seems to be missing is something you see in gentoo emerges but is there a way to fix it?
it's an experimental stage4 i got from a howto a guy did on installing fedora linux on ps3
benkong2, fix_libtool_files.sh?
which is what im doing
ping -C1 134.68.220.74
AStorm, ok thanks
darn
lowercase c
I'm getting an error with /opt/bin/aticonfig : "error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: cannont open shared object file: No such file or directory" Is it possible to fix this?
bI'm getting an error with /opt/bin/aticonfig : "error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: cannont open shared hosting object file: No such file or directory" Is it possible to fix this?/b
do i need to install something special to use an old ps/2 mouse on a computer that has no ps/2 ports? im trying to use one of those little adaptors..
the ping was successful
weird… nc gentoo.org 80 isn't working either, but shows up fine from the browser o_O
ok, use that for SYNC, then
white_rabbit_obj, yes, use revdep-rebuild from gentoolkit
does anyone know if it is possible to use ACL with some form of symbolic link? since the FS im trying to implement ACLs on is NTFS?
Possum, yes, weird
some DNS snafu
it's because gentoo.org is a rotation
AStorm, I see
how do i set it up so it syncs from that, put it in make.conf?
midnight, use rsync.gentoo.org instead
hi, can anyone say - 'x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.11 USE="gtk%* (-multilib)' , why -multilib ? it's present in make.conf
SYNC="rsync://134.68.220.74/gentoo-portage"
yes, put it in make.conf for now
gotta go, peace out
VFoX, it's an obsolete flag
VFoX, erm… do you really need 32-bit and 64-bit drivers for your vid card?
obsolete ?? but it's Not install 32bit OGL driver!
hm..
Possum, USE=multilib doesn't work now
wine,32 bit games ,Quake 4
VFoX, it should
it installs both
but it's not
AStorm, I didn't change or upgrade my gcc. What would be the arguments for fix_libtool_sh?
benkong2, uhm, then it's not for this
yes. .run script dose but emerge not
ok
VFoX, hmm, go report a bug, but check your profile first
i updated portage and there were 3 config files to update, but when i run etc-update only 2 were shown saying "— Invalid atom in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask: x11-wm/fluxbox-1.0_rc3_p4983"; what does this mean?
you should have the default amd64 one, not no-multilib one
nonx800, it means that atom is invalid
I am doing a fresh install and KDE is installing its 108 packages and I started noticing that the libtool seems to be moved was comming on the screen
s/atom/depstring/
I tried revdep-rebuild…it looked like it was going to do the trick, but when I go back to run /var/bin/aticonfig I get the same error
nothing has failed to install yet though
benkong2, ignore it
ok
it's a problem with many makefiles
libtool normally warns about reloacted libraried
so is that a problem?
nonx800, as you can see
so can you tell me where to look to understand this? becouse i dont get you
benkong2, it's because many makefiles detect that the libs are in the build dir
nonx800, in the file mentioned
benkong2, and think it's because they moved
as sandbox is cheating a bit, and emerge uses DESTDIR variable often
if the problem shows with –prefix, the makefiles are a tiny bit broken
well okay, thank you very much.
has anyone in here had any problems with bcm43xx native driver with WRT54g routers?
achew222 I have a hell of a time with my bcm
I have a wrt54gx
I got an atheros today, no problems since the switch
atheros router or atheros wifi card?
wifi card
i've wrt54g with no problems
d-link g650 rev c
i don't know I want to do that since its an internal wifi card
mine is too
I just pulled it out
pcimini i think
how much was it?
you can get an atheros for $15 on ebay
does that mean I loose my bluetooth?
I have a D-link DWA-552..?
It has nothing to do with your bluetooth. what is the problem with your bcm? I might just have a bad card, lots of people have success with bcm
What is bcm?
it works in windows and on the wifi at work, just not at home
broadcom
oh
can someone advice me good file manager?
and how can I edit my xorg config? where is it located?
I use the native drives and a wrt54g w/ tomato firmware, no problems
_nightw0lf, I am using rox
thnx i will try it
where did you get the "tomato" firmware?
do you know where is the xorg config located?
/etc/X11 I think
it's a fork of dd-wrt http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
much more slimmed down, I used to have to reboot every few days with dd-wrt, but now haven't in months
an emerge –sync completed but now when i try to emerge portage all the servers don't work…
cool, thanks. say, I just run the 'startx' (fresh gentoo install) does the X system knows what settings to use or i need to edit it?
dd-wrt is a hog :/
"name or service not known"
achew222, is it not working at all, or disconnects or what exactly is the problem?
my problem was frequent disconnects and poor speed
it connects doesn't do dhcp
you have a dhcp client installed?
lots of other networks around on similar channels?
I do, i'm on plugged in right now via ethernet on dhcp
that's the only problem I see with the native drivers that's worse than the ndiswrapper ones
yes, I changed the channel to a unique one
are you using wpa_supplicant or not?
I'm not, i removed wpa and wep its unsecure right now
since I switched over, I've had to be a lot more explicit with my priorities in the config, otherwise it just hops back and forth between access points
I do not recall having to edit my xorg.conf manually, I think everything was detected correctly on its own
could I see your /etc/conf.d/net as an example for configuring
sure
how?
modules=("dhcpcd")
dns_domain_lo="notyournetwork"
config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
dhcpcd_eth0="-t 10 -N"
modules=( "wpa_supplicant" )
you did something for that? or just emerged the gdm and it worked for you?
jeez 6 lines is a flood, eh?
vertigoacid, yep
apparently
3+ lines is a flood
3 to paste bin
http://rafb.net/p/jMeYjE65.html
how can I change now the run level? I mean after I will boot, it will automaticly will run the gdm
rc-update add gdm default
yup
or kdm, xdm, whathave you
fluxbox
su
I am using fluxbox
and I use xdm
what's xdm?
what is line 6
grpphical login manager
you mean, what does it do?
no, it didn't get sent
we only saw 5 lines before you got kicked
* rc-update: '/etc/init.d/gdm' not found; aborting
wpa_supplicant_wlan0="-Dwext"
well are you using gnome?
is xorg installed _nightw0lf?
no, fluxbox
I assume your wifi is eth0, mine is eth2 so change wlan0 to wlan2?
http://pastebin.ca/619716 guys, how is this for a web server? I have absolutelly no more services on it
probably /etc/init.d/xdm then
when i run emerge ati-drivers i see a package called virtual/ghostscript-0 0kB
well I guess, I'm running now fluxbox
what is that?
oh, yeah, then you must
no, wifi is wlan0, ethernet is eth0
afi
my wifi showed up as eth2
the name doesn't really matter
I know
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-545150-highlight-.html?sid=4b023d4b7cdc6b2ebd2c7799ccf158f0
but if i'm referencing it by the wrong name i'll get problems
iwconfig shows it as eth2 as well?
how do you launch fluxbox now _nightw0lf?
so wifi is not ethernet?
can anyone help me configure an ATI video card with X? I've read the ATI FAQ several times and I just can't seem to get it right
yes
that is to say, ethernet requires cabling?
well then you're good to go
hmm.. I've started 'startx' and probbobly it lunched the gdm or whatever, and I chose fluxbox from the sessions menu.
its not seeing my wifi now, but thats standard based on where I am in the house, lets see if I can get on a neighbor's wifi
well, ethernet does refer to the specific physical layer and data link layer implimentation
just do 'rc-update add xdm default' and that should bring it up each time
ok
alright, thanks
np
I'm new to wireless in linux and I don't have a hard cable connection available so .
I'm not sure what to do to get network connectivity
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Wireless_Configuration_and_Startup has pretty good info on basic wifi config
How do I go about building from a local ebuild? (getting 'not a valid portage tree')
hi i have a question about mounting windows shares on gentoo
with samba
make a local overlay
this is not rpm …
so .. after 24 hours .. I didn't manage to make gentoo run under vmware
bonsaikitten, how would I got about that?
go on
tried all the howto's .. it just can't boot the /
let's hope it'll be different in a real environment
here's my xorg.conf (using the xorg "radeon" driver)
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_Samba#Using_SMB but it says mount error: could not find target server. TCP name hermitian/globalshare not found
its not case sensitive is it?
dns names are not case sensitive, but share names probably are. can you ping hermitian and resolve the IP?
thank you guys for all your help.
so "ping hermitian" into terminal?
yep
unknown host, it says
well, then the DNS server you're pointing at doesn't know that hostname
use the IP instead
hi folks; I just got a gentoo system installed, and I'm having trouble using abcde. Whenever I try to rip to mp3 with lame, the computer reboots at some point (usually closer to the end of the ripping)
Unable to load image file" when trying to use fbsetbg, however, I believe my image files are valid
that worked
thanks!
jsin, ignore those dumb tools and use feh instead
it works with faux-transparent backgrounds too
yet another thing to emerge :/
well, off to start from scratch. sigh. back in a few hours
I just emerged feh, how do I inform fbsetbg that I want to use feh instead of Esetroot?
anyone have an idea why abcde would make my computer restart like that?
it's an publish your images online viewer too
jsin2e, you don't
thanks…I think my problem was that I was trying to use the fglrx driver…I switched over the radeon and it seems to have solved the problem I was having
use it directly
anybody know if theres a channel devoted to data recovery/forensics?
anyone here use kget?
I have
i can't get it to auto resume. it pops up an error window "connection lost". but then it never attempts to resume unless I manually resume
connection attempts are set to 99, and set to rety in 15 minute intervals
thechris, I used it too .. stopped though because the proc usage would get to 100% ..
what's your Connection Type set to?
always connected
you mean "Permanent" ?
yes
sorry, no idea ;(
try in #kde or #gentoo-kde
#kde is dead
a waiting room
yeah, only 296 nicks there
I'm trying to install gentoo on my laptop, I haven't a wired connection, so I'm forced to use a wireless connection. I can't seem to get the 2007.0 livecd to work with my driver (ipw2200) and the minimal iso doesn't work either, is there a solution to this? Perhaps, using the 2006.1 iso
(which would be a pain)
you can use any linux boot system, any liveCD, liveUSB, or linux distro to install Gentoo
have you tried to see if knoppix works?
I haven't, my net is pretty slow, so the option of installing via knoppix would have to be kept for another day
I have the 2006.1 iso here, however.
does that work?
I haven't tried it, thus far. I'm awaiting response from you, as to whether it is wise to run it
It is pretty old after all
you don't have to use the stage tarball on the particular liveCD
If you can get a network connection from the 2006.1 you can download the 2007.0 tarball
I wonder if my connection would work.
phew. well I guess i'm startin' over
never seen a hard drive go bad like that for no reason
hi, i've just recompiled my kernel with alsa as a module, and now i can't see any text in kde applications
like konsole, the task bar, etc
contradiction-pi: that makes no sense
contradiction-pi: did you reinstall your graphics driver after running "make modules_install"
well 2007.0
modprobe the driver though
contradiction-pi: what else did you change?
hold.
Quick question guys
i only changed the alsa stuff, and then did make && make modules_install. however, when i started kde, i saw the nvidia screen
i only changed the alsa things
now time for kde to emerge
contradiction-pi: hm~ weird
contradiction-pi: well, the kde font problem is unrelated — ohhhh wait, did you reemerge your video driver package?
no
When running etc-update what option is best if it has files that i have updated before like hostname and keynaps
contradiction-pi: do that
emerge nvidia-drivers?
contradiction-pi: yes
can I set a gcc version for just one emerge run using an env var?
i hope i'm typing this stuff right, because i can't see a thing
contradiction-pi: use a terminal
contradiction-pi: ctrl-alt-f1
s/terminal/virtual terminal/
its weird, during emerges im barely any cpu
*banghead* PEBKAC
I think I saw it hit 20%
'course, there's no way he can get back into x until his driver gets remerged
is it easy to see what temperatures are
without going into bios
look at lmsensors
wiki has a good article
yay, worked
my computer is buzzing at me during emerges
which probably means I'm getting a little hot
I am trying to get gensplash to work using the 2007.0 theme, but it is booting normally. This is my kernel line: kernel /boot/kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.22.1 root=/dev/ram0 init=linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/gentoo/root dolvm2 udev vga=791 splash=silent,theme:livecd-2007.0
CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 quiet
i compiled alsa as a module, but it doesn't show up in lsmod, nor does alsaconf detect my card
Anybody from the KDE herd here?
try #gentoo-kde
Fieldy, good idea m8
anyone see a problem with my kernel line or is the problem elsewhere?
it's up now
i'll get a stage tarball and download.
it should take a while however :/
Gentoo installer is barfing because my harddrive is GPT/MBR hybrid (macbook)
how can I do a networkless install without worrying about that?
i can't find instructions to do GRP without using the installers, and the cli and gtk installers both barf at partitioning
even though i can mkfs /dev/sda* et al
It's called Gentoo Handbook, bro
I was reading the handbook
the networkless install instructions are in the 2007.0 set
and they both refer to the installer
I'm getting an error from emerge telling me "!!! cairo needs the X flag set" … what does that mean?
what do you need installers for?
and have no instructions for pointing portage at the cd instead of the internet
I'm trying to do a networkless install
add 'X' in your USE="" in /etc/make.conf
howdy. i'm trying to start up alsa (i've compiled alsa into the kernel as a module) by doing /etc/init.d/alsasound start, but i always get http://pastebin.com/m51a8bf7b , even though i've looked online and snd-intel8×0 is definitely the correct
driver
in /etc/makeconf, there is DISTDIR=
The automated installation (aka the "networkless install") isn't nearly as good as the "manual" installation, and has been known to have many problems. Additionally, it's not recommended for use unless you're familiar with the standard install procedure to begin with in the event that it doesn't
work
I'm used to gentoo install very much
how to enter a process?
but i can't find GRP instructions that -don't- use the installer
I added 'X' to USE="" in /etc/make.conf, but I still get the same error
I've never done a GRP/networkless install
For Macs don't you just need to use a Mac-compatable boot loader?
ps aux | vim, i see multiple vim instances opening different files. How to enter these vim processes and start editing these files?
I can boot find and everything
did ya recompile cairo after that?
it's the installing with GRP packages that is the issue
ps aux | grep vim
is that the same as running emerge again?
yes, emerge cairo
please, how can I successfully use ooqstart-gnome? When I add it to panel, it doesn't work and ask me to configure OO path..
just define DISTDIR= in make.conf
contradiction-pi: have you tried installing alsa using the ebuild rather than using the one in the kernel?
question 2, where are the GRP packages on the livecd?
I have some ntfs partision how can i make it ext3?
ah, there we go.. /var/db/pkg .. ?
no, from the gentoo alsa guide, i understood the module route to be better. i'll try the ebuild way now
should be in ${DISTDIR}/packages
the packages are all in /mnt/livecd/var/db/pkg
that did the trick! thanks!
that should be the info about installed packages, not packages thelves
it'z .bz2 files
* themselves
hi, when doing tab completion on an nfs share bash locks up, … how can I prevent this ?
ok i used the gentoo wiki safe cflags for pentium4, so i have
oops
it's not possible to convert, rather you can go ahead and create an ext3 filesystem. if the data contained in the ntfs filesystem is important then you'll have to back it up (or lose it).
"-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe -formit-frame-pointer"
5@C:C HK BI 2D5D 5@C:C
no data there
and its causing compiles to fail
the -formit-frame-pointer part
throw it away
what is too hot for a CPU? 60 C?
It's "-fomit-frame-pointer"
Is $PS1 the correct var to set my command prompt?
well, mkfs -j it then (and set the partition type to 83).
60 c is pretty high, 75 is usually shutdown temp
octavarium, it's '-fomit-frame-pointer'
ok
no r
lol
what do I put in make.conf to tell it that I have a certain sound/video card?
maybe that's the problem
depends on your cpu
mine runs at 32 with a zalman fan
check the specs of the vendor (e.g. a pentium core duo has 95 degrees celsius as its limit, 60 is rather normal)
VIDEO_CARDS="
mine seems to pop to 60 every once in a while
my bad i have amd's
is there one for sound cards too?
no hays
wow, so I wonder why mine alarms at 60
which CPU is it?
core2quad
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia vesa vga"
maybe bios settings
The fonts in my vlc subtitles are all pixelated. any ideas why?
is it possible the sensor saturates at 60C?
hi, my packade.mask seems to be completly blank(?!), where can i find information on why netscape-flash has been masked?
if i'm using alsa-driver should i make Sound Card Support a module in the kernel?
where's the alarm coming from? sensor application or hardware?
my case is buzzing at me
contradiction-pi, yes
check the bios settings
sensors shows 60C
how about ALSA?
nah, the bios usually has a alarm setting, it might be too low
the gentoo ALSA guide says the two methods are mutually exclusive
contradiction-pi, if you want an in kernel alsa, compile it in. if you want to install the separate package, leave it out
a quad core has about 130 W tdp, which makes 60 degree look very normal
contradiction-pi, yes, but you still need soundsystem support either way
if i clean my cpufan it gets me +_14 dgrees
http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=2774&sSpec=&OrdCode=
How do I referse a chmod 666 ?
that and I am overclocking
lookup your specs there
rakeyry, chmod whateverwastherebefore?
don't have a mouse at the moment but i'll look when I do
without knowing the original mask?
im emerging kde as we speak
up to libxv
60 isnt that normal fir amd
There's so much copper in this thing there's no way its getting hot
Where do i define the distdir target to on the livecd?
nolimitsoya It was /usr/share/themes
seems your thermal specs are 62.2 degrees celsius
hays, it could be mounted improperly, clogged with dust or ju plain broken
I've got this board with copper runs and fins all over it, and a huge copper fan
you're about to fry your cpu…
have you actually touched the hsf to see if it's getting that hot?
rakeyry, unmerge, remerge
my zalman 7000 can get very dusty
yikes
mobo thermal sensors can often be off by tens of degrees
brb
What..?
vertigoacid, thats why no single proper program polls them
rakeyry, whatever was in themes, unmerge it and remerge. anyways, this is why you should always have a proper backup. wakeupcall
Why not just change it back to whatever it was?
umm, what else would they poll?
rakeyry, becouseyou dont know what that was, apparently…
mobo reading in BIOS = lm sensors that you're going to be looking at anywhere else
vertigoacid, the integrated thermal probe
I wasn't aware that you could actually poll the CPU itself. cool
What's yours?
rakeyry, i wont tell you
rakeyry, seriously, using settings from someone elses system is _not_ a good idea. anyway, was it a recursive change, or just for the inode?
Just for the one..
rakeyry, well then. 744 should be a safe bet
5I 3KC ?4G H BBC2 5I CLC:?C ?4G I: H5MK CBI35@ BH2HD-2:HC:K?
sorry
ZogG, no. you will never be forgiven
:F
Thanks
to use glx i need to emerge glx or it's enought to use nvidia drivers
i have problem =(
no direct render =(
ZogG, emerge the nvidia drivers, add the proper strings to xorg.conf and run eselect opengl set nvidia
How do I unzip a folder without creating a main folder for it. Like for example for 123.tar.gz that would have a file /foo/bar/1/ /foo/bar/2/ /foo/bar/3/ instead of a /foo/bar/123/1 /foo/bar/123/2 etc. etc.
ZogG, i think nvidia provides a tool to do the xorg.conf configuration automagicaly. try things like nvidia-glx-enable and alike - tabcomp is nice
nvidia-settings would be the one to use
gentoo ZogG nvidia guide
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
likewhoa, no, it wouldnt
likewhoa used it
phew well brought the clock back down
it generates modelines for you that's about all.
what was weird was that it would just spike
eselect opengl list
it would hang around at like 42-43 and then boom hit 60
make sure your 'nvidia' module is loaded too
=CK
yes
[1] nvidia *
I am trying to setup gensplash with livecd-2007.0 theme, but it is not loading. Does anyone see a problem with my setup or have other advise for me? http://pastebin.ca/619803
likewhoa, im talking about the nvidia script for enabling the driver provided in the driver package itself. nvidia-settings is the control panel usable after installing and setting up the driver, and thats at a later stage
post your xorg.conf then
i must be ahead then.
that sounds weird
while being idle?
Nobody know?
no, while doing stuff
simple explanation: multi-threaded (more than one core doing things) vs. single-threaded
its possible maybe the fourth core was kicking in or something
glxinfo|grep direct doesn't show direct rendering?
rakeyry, man tar
besides, wth do you need overclocking with a quad core???
shows "No"
I don't, but its been said they easily overclock to 3.0 so I figured I'd try it
rakeyry xarchiver ?
Can you at least tell me what I am looking for is called so I know what to look for?
lsmod|grep nvidia
glad I didn't drop money on fast overclocking RAM
they do
but probably not by just adding to FSB freq and with a simple copper fan
this fan is ginormous
i run a core2 dou at 4.2Ghz but that's dual-core,.. i know a few friends that run quad-core at 3.8Ghz+
which doesn't say anything about its effectiveness
it has a ton of surface area
and what's the temperature inside the case?
Zalman CNPS9700
nvidia 4706740 22
likewhoa
damn…
mine seems to be getting hot
is that one of the sensors? let me see
restart X and then post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
that's all what matters, adding 15 degrees (it's summer dude!) to the outside temperature will bring you above the limit very easily
keep your temps below 60C load
rakeyry, somethingdirectorysomething i bet ya
that is load temps.. you should want idle temps of 30-45C
I .. see.
yeah I was pegging 60C under load
all those tests they run are lab tests, not real world (i.e. damn hot room after playing whatever fancy game for 2 hours)
they can handle high temps 85C is the mark were the cpu starts to throttle
yet somehow I'm getting heat problems at 3.0 GHz
http://pastebin.com/d363a833f
likewhoa
i would use GIMPS,MEMTEST86 and plain old glibc compiles to test stability.
someone looked up my spec and said it was 62
not the spec i've seen though, thermal design was 60+
emerge kde on a new system is what I used..
TMAX is about 85C
it's *you*, who should actually look it up *before* attempting to fry your CPU
that's not true stability testing… you want to test both ram and cpu well
my p4 is unfryable
well that's why I turned the alarm on
i tried to do it 3 times, still works
and what is the problem? as X seems the driver and has enabled direct rendering
right now I brought it back down to regular speed
likewhoa glxinfo thinks another way
prescott?
but compiling made the alarm go off when I had it at 3.0 Ghz
northwood
2400
raise the limit on it.
normal clock is 2.4 GHz, right?
the clips of my cpufan broke one time, so i could test it
im gonna have to check that heat spec before I do that
yep
then it seems the spec is the right one…
what does it say for the regular core duos?
you idle temps should be like 5-10C above ambient temp depending on HSF and mount.
hey, I'm about to start compiling a desktop environment, and I have a few questions about USE flags. does anyone know what xcb is? it's a flag for the X11 package.
euse -i xcb should tell you
likewhoa thanks!
im curious if the core2quad is unique
i got an opteron 165 overclocked from 1800MHz to 3150Mhz under water but now i run it at 2859Mhz at stock voltage
go to the website
likewhoa which package is euse in? portage-utils or something?
gentoolkit
im links-limited until I get kde
use links with jpg USE flag.
enjoy your CPU until then
is there any channel about desklets and all that/
I don't have framebuffer support compiled in … never could get it to work on the first try
i made the mistake of leaving out the '-bin' part when i emerged openoffice about 2 hrs ago. does anyone know approximately how long its gonna take to compile on a p4 with 1gb ram???
i can't find a comparable spec, but i know that the t2500 (or whatever this thing is called) working in my notebook has 95 degrees tmax
4-5 h
thanx
np
just hit 45
What do I have to emerge to get pecl?
Arek, whats been keeping you?
)
Just not really needing it.
probably one of the 2381 pecl-* packages (depends on what you need)
please, how can I successfully use ooqstart-gnome? When I add it to panel, it doesn't work and ask me to configure OO path..
Probably won't take long, tho.
I only really need the hash module.
Arek, why install it if you dont need it?
perhaps you should have a look at gnumeric and abiword instead?
no ebuild for pecl-hash (if that makes any sense)
I know, that's what confuses me.
so it's either part of some other ebuild or not available
Actually, I am probably going to be needing it, since I'm about to go to school online and my school requires me to be able to handle MSWord documents.
Among others.
45C is fine,.. just don't go above 60-65C on load
by ms vista and office2007
btw here is the data sheet http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/31559202.pdf
look under thermal specifications
Vista? Go away.
ew vista?
Uh, Windows 3.1?
XP is bad enough.
Arek, ;o)
Vista's like a half-a$$'d beryl wannabe
Winblows 3.11 was da best
Possum, please dont mention areo and beryl in the same sentence please
I agree with HappySquirrel
arrggh…so guys, help me out here. How come the font-rendering is crappy on almost all media-players on gentoo?
HappySquirrel 1.0
Possum, it sort of taints beryl in some way
i've tried vlc, mplayer, kaffeine and totem- only gmplayer seems to do any better
we're talkign abotu .srt format.
yagami, xorg-osd b0rked?
nolimitsoya, Well, it's just vista's attempts were so horrible … I'm trying to point out that it's really _not_ a just comparison
can't read that until I get X installed
check the flags they may use
i am using xinerama.
Possum, dont you feel the need to wash your mouth out with clorine after talking about *gulp* aero? i do.
can that cause the problem?
47C..
yagami, what i just suggested? O.o
My Gentoo is saying that it cannot mount a partition during boot, anyway for me to figure out which one? (I think it's my ATAPI drive, actually)
i fail to see 85 degrees
nolimitsoya, The one time I used it, I puked shortly after, so yes
yeah, nolimitsoya - i am saying that xinerama flag is used in x11-libs/xosd. isnt that what you're talking about?
yagami, na
Mine is a core 2 quad (not extreme) 2.4 GHz
I guess they made an extreme for a while
ooooooook, so how do i find out if its 'b0rked' :p
yagami, look into the configuration and perhaps reemerge it
yagami, anyways, whats wrong with the rendering?
.srt format subtitles show up pixelated on vlc/kaffeine/totem
and like i said, so far only mplayer seem to do a fair job
yagami, well, thats a "problem" of missing antialiasing
i'd say play it safe
check /etc/fstab
ATAPI would be a cdrom or something
yeah, no reason to risk it unless I find hard evidence its ok
likewhoa H BI5HAC2 5@D5 04D? I7CB?4 2HKKD7C:C2 0:IL LD;CNAIB0 - LD=8C 8CAD3KC I0 5@HK?
I'd be pissed if I melted this really nice chip
likewhoa sorry again
Yeah I only have 4 fstab entries, /boot, /, none, and /mnt/cdrom
ZogG, whats with the cerylic?
getting some weird results trying to rebuild evas and ecore after a revdep-rebuild…saying ecore isn't found. Have these been deprecated or something?
They are reiserfs, reiserfs, swap, and auto for filesystem… any problem with my boot partition being in reisferfs?
sorry just sitting on several chanels - thats why sometimes don't pay attention to lang
ZogG, isnt there some sort of autolang for diffrent channel in you client?
likewhoa noticed that flag opengl dissapered from make.conf - maybe this is a reason ? =(
nolimitsoya no
i hte such progs also
ZogG, tried konversation?
until they will be AI i don't believe at lang auto change
nolimitsoya xchat
and from console BitchX
ZogG, then we are not talking about the same thing. i can set the char encoding to diffrent (persistent) settings for every individual channel wouldnt that solve your problem?
whats the commands to open this file /etc/make.conf
RamSeize, nano
ok
you can use any editer, such as vi or nano
RamSeize, or nano -w, or vim or what ever you prefer
nolimitsoya i can't and don't need - utf-8 is my solution
almost everywhere on freenode is utf8
you have auto for the cdrom drive?
is there any channel regarding adesklets/
Oh, but there's no CD in the drive, is that why it isn't mounting? I'm such an idiot sometimes
then a) put a cdrom in your drive when booting or b) edit fstab to have a noauto for it
Does my swap partition benefit from being either primary or logical?
My instinct is to make it primary
Ditto for my boot partition
doesn't matter at all

if only one of our hundred or so ops were around
nah, that would make sense…
is there any channel regarding adesklets/
does anyone know
i keep asking.
ugh
did you try #adesklets ?
yea i did
gentoo tommy handbook amd64
Tommy`: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/
hrm
nah, that wasn't it
I finally get something that looks like an answer to my question and I get called away for dinner . haha… okay, so how do I know if my WLAN card is detected or not?
well, does it show up when you run iwconfig?
im looking to do something like this with my yab toolbar, http://adesklets.sourceforge.net/images/screenshots/gnoomy_0.jpg but I can't get the stupid opactiy to 0 there is this black box around the whole thing.
and i've looked everywhere in the config.txt and yea
oh no, ati-drivers compile failed : http://rafb.net/p/063qY994.html
can't find anything that does it.
what do i do?
For adesklets I think you should find a channel specific to whatever you're looking for. They might have some info that is helpful in adesklet BSD channels
Umm, I can check
heh… I can't be on IRC and be booted into linux at the same time until this works
yea i have no idea where any of these channels are..
Just try typing adesklet and irc into google, or "yab toolbar" and irc
/list
on freenode? /list is a bad idea…
but it works
yeah if you've got an hour to spare
That is like posting your email address and asking for spam! There is no end to it
well i was showing howto look for channels unless they do /list #blah
lol

How do I "unmask" ies4linux?
whats it masked by
?
Missking keyword
what arch you running?
people don't read anymore..
correct my man
amd64
thats why
yeah. probably is broken on amd64
awesome, I will download it manually
it's exactly that kind of shit why i'm reinstalling x86 right now
hey guys, what about pidgin?
run a chroot
how to unmask it?
what about it
whats it masked by
?
lol
what gives emerge -pv xineramaproto
too much work. what good does x86_64 do the average desktop right now?
ppl dont read do they ?
its masked for every archs
wow .. this is a massive list… haha
yep
by what
slows down games under cedega
emegre -pv pidgin
whats is SAY ?
"Masked by ~amd64 flag"
so keywords
but i go on the ebuild and all the archs are marked
dont need to edit ebuild
ping?
just need to add a line in /etc/portage/package.keywords
i just saw it
wine should work with amd64
oh
it does
package.keyword. I am new to gentoo, just testing it out on my desktop
ok, no, it does not show up in iwconfig
the handbook (how to say that in english) suggested me another file to put a line on
it is keywords
have you compiled the proper modules for your wifi card?
I need to fix that .
err, blair
dont forget the s
I don't know; I'm using the liveDVD
so I presume not
seeing as how it's a wireless-N card
well, the livedvd should have modules for most supported cards…
so, almost done, what line should I use?
Hello, I am trying to setup a jabber server on my home, but, what is the way to add users using jabber.xml o something like this?
#jabber?
It said 'no network interfaces auto-detected' during the boot sequence
googled around to see if your wifi card is even supported under linux based hosting services at all?
if your using the gentoo liveCD yeah it isnt god with wifi
No, I haven't . There's no such thing as a generic driver, eh?
use knoppix or another livecd to install
if so, find out what kernel module, run lsmod, and see if the module is available. if not, yeah, like richiefrich said
mm'k
I am building a new kernel, when I boot into it, will I need to remerge madwifi-ng before my wifi works again?
knoppix or ubuntu are ones of the best for a livecd for wifi
yeah if it is a different ver
if it is the same ver no
if the kernel is a different version?
yeah
like 1.6.22
err
like 2.6.22
like 2.6.21
I am going from vanilla 2.6.22.1 to gentoo 2.6.22-r1
ok, upon googling, it seems to work with madwifi according to a few other users so I guess I'll be good to go with that
