personally I find the symlink flag a bit annoying, automatically updating the /usr/src/linux symlink when you merge a new kernel so you have to upgrade right away or not have modules built for your current kernel anymore, and I like building my kernels manually

And I'm telling you that we unfortunately can't say anything about that because the moron vendors keep replacing the hardware in their products. All we can say is this driver works well with this chipset. It's no longer possible to say for sure what chipset a certain product will use.
i got an ebuild that is having a problem fetching so i stuck the tar.gz in usr/portage/distfiles

I'm afraid I haven't seen more than one vendor of consumer products that are reliable; that's Sweex. They're on a pretty tight budget so stay with the cheapest hardware from Ralink. The driver situation for that is shaping up currently, although there aren't any drivers in the kernel yet.

I'd say that the difference is that Gentoo is a meta-distribution, it's all about choice. Where other distributions make packages with what they consider to be smart defaults and good choices, Gentoo forces you to make all those choices for yourself.

which makes life difficult as you cant connect to portage to get it

any ideas why udev would assign my dvd/cdrom drive to /dev/dvd1 and /dev/cdrom1 and /dev/cdrw1 instead of the same, except without the 1's?
i have no other drives, and the names sans 1 don't already exist.

or type in ls -af /mnt
