i always updated my kernel and it always worked
with hg mercurial, not without

could my PSU be corrupting the archive or the hard drive is going bad?

'k. Anyway two months is a fairly long time for kernels so I think it could be worth a shot trying to use the current in-kernel ALSA drivers again.

did you check smart?

so i should compile my kernel with builtin or module alsa support ?

gotta go for a sec, you can google for that one 8-|

ok

ah, I just missed that it tries making modules in the kernel dir

and how am i gonna apply the realtek patches i need

Builtin, that way you're sure that no modules are mixed up.
What's the realtek patch?

something i need to get sound, replaces something in the alsa-kernel

#mplayer

Do you have the PCI ids for your Intel audio btw? lspci -n|grep 0401:

ha
sry

"something" isn't good enough I'm afraid. :p Do you have a link to the patch?

keyboard, it does nothing. a is a, s is b, d is f, 5 is back space.

b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation HD Audio Controller (rev

Hey

i have a friend trying to multiboot with ubuntu and gentoo. /boot is on /ubuntu_partition/boot/. anyone know how to install gentoo using that grub location?

Ah, and lspci -n the save device?

mount -o bind or symlink

I'm trying to get Naim working.. it's not seeming to want to comply.

I'll check with smartctl…
result:
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3104

When I try to connect it prompts me for a password, I type it and it never actually connects.

Ok, hold on.

84b (rev

does that need to work/will it work before the root filesystem is mounted?

Thanks! So this link is for the intel audio, you mentioned a realtek patch too?

so all of these things which aren't compiling without expat, what do I do about them?

that realtek patch can be found on that link

did you check the voltage of your 12V rails in the bios? that may give you a clue about the cpu…

attached files, realtek10.tar.gz

Ok - great! I'm reading through it.

no

s/cpu/psu (sorry)

if you tell grub what's going on, sure, and if ubuntu boots, it already knows

should I go check and report back?

These things which aren't compliing without expat depend on something else that depends on expat and has now been broken.

upgrading to unstable driver fixed the X issue, thanks

you could do that… but I'm not too sure if it'll be that…

I'm just about to force a run of the SMART self-tests

I'm not sure if there is just a limited number of offenders, so the most reliable way is for you to pastebin some build logs.

I just noticed that a SMART self-test had either never been run, or it completed OK

I've had my fair share of hardware issues, they went from PSU to broken harddisks and even to a lack of cooling (southbridge in the last particular case)… if it is hardware, then it is hard-to-tell ;-)

ubuntu was installed first, with its own grub in /boot on its root partition. ubuntu still works fine, it's that the kernel panics because of a sync error (which is why I'm wondering if it's because the gentoo kernel doesn't know where /boot is). does the gentoo kernel need to know where /boot is?

nope, just grub

ok
weird
so now i'm still stuck as to what's making the kernel panic with a sync error
_

Until you give us more information we can't help you. Please look into netconsole or a serial console.

CareBear\: doesn't netconsole require another computer?

does the ubuntu kernel do the same thing with your gentoo rootfs?

Yes, as does serial.

just tell us the exact errror

ubuntu still works fine

stupid question, but is gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r2 merged currently?
or have you unmerged it and not updated the kernel yet possibly?

nothing has changed for it. gentoo's kernel has just been copied to ubuntu's /boot, and added to its menu.lst

then the problem is the kernel you've made

keyboard, it does nothing. a is a, s is b, d is f, 5 is back space.

ah, probably is, still that's sort of odd

usually caused by not having a driver for your drive controller or root filesystem built in

k, now I know that, i just have to figure out that problem. lol. thank you very much, time for me to do some menuconfig digging

Drive command "Execute SMART Extended self-test routine immediately in captive mode" successful.

guess it could be an -r2 thing to not have the modules target, but I don't think it'd happen within a . release

that's what i've figured
thx

not sure, but ive been told gentoo doesnt delete sources

now the drive is entirely dedicated to the SMARt

if you unmerge gentoo-sources it deletes whatever hasn't been modified since you merged it I think

/j #expat
oops
ignore that

i think it isnt merged

might want to merge it then, heh

tests, the manpage of smartctl says that I should umount all partitions on that drive, so I did so

should i use build flag ? or symlink

personally I use neither

how long has gentoo-portage.com been down?

kahr, about an hour or two
a few people have been attempting to contact thrasher7

lol
what's send 1?
err
send q?

personally I find the symlink flag a bit annoying, automatically updating the /usr/src/linux symlink when you merge a new kernel so you have to upgrade right away or not have modules built for your current kernel anymore, and I like building my kernels manually

Gentoo doesn't have a crazy patch machine like Ubuntu seems to, right?

patch machine?

means that Ubuntu seems to apply a bunch of patches to the software before compiling it

for an amd turion 64 x2, should the subarchitecture type be "PC-Compatible" or "Generic architecture (Summit, bigsmp, ES7000, default)" ?

when i click to drag by tapping my touchpad, it dosent drag it just clicks. what do i have to do to make it drag? gentoo-wiki is down

depends on the package, gentoo packages normally go for minimal patches to make it work well everywhere, but there's exceptions obviously
gentoo's xorg used to atleast apply a lot of patches

that's good

(fex.)

Ok, I am back xD

maccam94, assuming you've used amd64 stage3 and your compiling your kernel now… you would want to use Processor family (AMD-Opteron/Athlon64)

is there any way to specify what directories i want portage to use from my overlay that i'm using /

libtool is still reporting libfreetype is installed into /usr/local, but there are no .pc files or anything pointing there..any hint?
ulibtool is still reporting libfreetype is installed into /usr/local, but there are no .pc files or anything pointing there..any hint?/u

oh god, not extractions again @_@

Sparrowmelody, tried rebuilding libtool?

are there any mods around?

I just decided to blow away my box and start with a fresh install.. it was just too mesed up. Thanksfor the help

gentoo-portage and the gentoo-wiki are both down, someone might want to add that to the topic

OK, I'll do it.

indeed, but there's another submenu on the same page as that Processor Family submenu, called Subarchitecture Type, which is what i'm asking about

ping

pong

and it's the x86 stage

thank you, now it worked, was on to this earlier but was just told i should allready have sources, im not so familiar so i couldnt see wheter i had or not myself

maccam94, i could be very helpful and provide an amd64 kernel config you could use for a template

I can get to portage.gentoo.org with out issues

are you able to modify the topic

yes

that would be much appreciated, it wouldn't be very different from the x86 would it? i'll just look for the subarch part

How can emerge the emerge…session that came before the last one? I.e. not emerge –restore, but emerge –restore-previous, if you will ?

please re-confirm that

maccam94, i see… amd64 kernel under x86 stage wouldnt work. you should likely use athlon-xp cpu type or just redo it with the amd64 stage3 to have both 64bit and 32bit

emerge –resume

just dled from there

i just want to see what the processor has set for a single option that I know is not bit-specific

maccam94, no, I want to resume the one before that one

;-)

it seems both gentoo-portage.com and the gentoo-wiki are both having sql load errors, you may or may not wish to add this to the topic

maccam94, 1 sec for the kernel config

maccam94, wow, I am too tired to remember real syntax, go me

not, they aren't official gentoo sites

true

I don't know much about libtool. What is it exactly and why does it report the wrong path when emerging?

um, well, idk if you can do that. if you resume it and finish, you might be able to then resume the one before that

friendly12345, gentoo-wiki and friends are owned by thrasher7 - gentoo comrade from parts elsewhere

maccam94, alas… there lies my dilemma

oh you mean gentoo-portage. I can get to portage.gentoo.org and wiki.gentoo.org that is what I though you were talking about
sorry mis read ya there

Anyone else know how to skip the entire –resume sequence and go straight to the one after that?

yeah I know

That's not clear

–skipfirst?

Sparrowmelody, just thought of something else that may help… fix_libtool_files.sh

it's not great that 3 major Gentoo sites are down though

kojiro, no, I am tired.. wow, I mean, in the way when you do –resume and it works, you can do –resume again, can you do that w/o finishing the first –resume?

can anyone help me alter xorg.conf to use basic vesa drivers?

I just finished emerging. I'll try compiling again and if it fails I am doing that, thanks.

packages.gentoo.org was down last time I checked

maccam94, http://www.eliteitminds.com/gentooconfig/midas-config

Subarchitecture Type?

thx

sure

masa, vesa is generally a fallback driver

PC compatible usually

yeah i know.. this is for the live DVD

kojiro, … how? it keeps showing me an unfinishable emerge for awn

oh, you need to –skipfirst it, and get through that list, first

i know, the live DVD's default is'nt working

masa hmmm… which videocard do you have?

do you know if that applies to dual core cpu's?

ali3nx lemme double-check, it's a new nvidia Directx 10

i recall reading somewhere that xorg's ati drivers were hosed in the cd's

how do i tell portage i only want ebuilds from media-gfx in my arcon overlay?

kojiro, I don't understand exactly why, but it worked this time, thanks, now, to sleep

the 8000 series

yes, ty maccam94

masa, you may be able to use xorg's nv driver

the latest nv works

is it possible for aan xmodmap file to make a certain keycode be a 'combo' of keys? if i wanted keycode 162 to be SuperL+X, for example.

Just returns * Scanning libtool files for hardcoded gcc library paths…

but idk about the one in the live disc, i know support was only relatively recently added

i hate extracting the kernel…

ali3nx i have the 8600M GT

you can use either PC compatible or the default config-x86-genericarch

masa, try editing xorg.conf and set the driver in device to "nv"

ali3nx how do i change it to use those drivers?
ali3nx ok thanks, of course it's that simple

Nope, neither fixed this little problem now.

so for an amd turion 64 x2, should the subarchitecture type be "PC-Compatible" or "Generic architecture (Summit, bigsmp, ES7000, default)" ? smp looks tempting

maccam94, pc compatible

what is wrong with Generic?

Hi. I have just installed gentoo on a rain array and I am getting a kernel panic on fisrt boot.

Ok.

I use PC compatible on a dual core system myself

k
thx

can someone help me figure out if gentoo has support for this card from linksys, i cant seem to find the chipset for ithttp://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1144763512962&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=1296213404B04

unlikely to make a big difference. Other kernel options like scheduling are more important

I have setup sda1 and sdb1 as /boot with a raid1 mirror. The other partitions on the drive, I have setup as raid 0 stripes.

a rain array, you say? no way!

err this is the link http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1144763512962&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=1296213404B04

Do you already have the card?

\n

xaque, you can't have /boot on a software raid array

linksys cards use broadcom i believe, so you must either us ndiswrapper or bcm43xx

What is best option for automounting NFS filesystem to a box? autofs or just fstab edit? anything else work?

at least, no boot loader I know supports linux raid :P

no but i will, my linux hosting box is being shipped here and should be here friday, and thats when i will buy the card

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_on_Software_RAID#Installing_Grub_onto_both_MBRs says different.

That's not the full truth though.

if that is the case, how can I correct this?

michaeldisieno, check here and see if your card is listed http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility

edit fstab and use nfs?

if it is you may be lucky

thanks

there's also the issue of whether you'll be using 2.6.22 or greater kernels, which use a different wireless stack which a lot of cards do not yet have drivers for

do NFS mounts show up on 'df -hal' ?

some of the best web hosting wireless drivers available

xaque, by creating a normal partition for /boot

i believe so

meeseontheleese / maccam94 : The problem is that some wifi products are changed completely inside but not marketed as a new product. Ie. two products with the same model number from the vendor will have completely incompatible hardware inside.

do I need to pass any arguments to tell the kernel that the root= option is a raid?

CareBear\: yeah, my big worry is if the chipset is good or not, thats what im not sure about

meeseontheleese / maccam94 : The only way to know for sure what a give hardware is today, is by looking up the FCC ID at fcc.gov and looking at the photos of the chipsets.

CareBear\: indeed, but linksys is a big broadcom user. they may be different broadcom chips, but they're most likely still broadcom (from what i know)

xaque, root= would be your mdX root partiton containing /sbin/init

which it is.

see im new to the wifi area, i would always use wired before, is broadcom good?

grub can use each of the mirrored boot partitions independantly

the kernel panics stating that it could not find the md2 device

Argh, nothing. I still get: libtool: link: `/usr/local/lib/libfreetype.la' is not a valid libtool archive

no

er there are chips with better linux compatibility eg. madwifi Intel

it's usable, but it isn't very good

Any bootloader can, as the bootloader sets up the kernel command line.

what have you tried?

*atheros not madwifi

which I apear to have done. Grub begins to boot the kernel and start loading devices

Linksys have used lots of different chips. They've switched between five different chipsets for one product, without even changing the USB id! (Prism, Broadcom, Atheros, one Ralink, another Ralink)

xaque, did you rebuild your kernel with linuxraid in the kernel image?

really?
hmph
maybe i'm thinking of their routers

searching for .pc files and such, fix_libtool_files, and re-emerging libtool.

I don't believe "linuxraid" was in there. I did compile hosting the raid0 and raid1 options into the kernel.

well according to madwifi, it shows most linksys cards with lspci output of atheros friendly12345

xaque, hmmm

gahhh, they dont have the model i want on here

madwifi is the atheros drivers

im looking to use a n pci card and router

yes that is what I meant to say

i want the highest possible for my linux box and my macbook

http://rafb.net/p/JzuH2513.html

You could look for Intel 4965

that is kind of what I am thinking. Any ideas on what I can do to repair this half built system?

The driver for it apparently works.

xaque, i'd need to see your grub config, fdisk -l and mdadm –misc –detail info for partitons to get a decent idea of what could be wring with the boot process

(Even though it's brand new hardware.)

CareBear\: intel 4965? that sounds like onboard wifi, i want to keep my current board until the next upgrade

Anything else I can try?

ali3nx it's already using the "nv" driver

pretty basic. Only line that matters is kernel /kernel root=/dev/md2

try re-emerging gtk

or root (hd0,0)

I think 4965 is still a miniPCI card, so good fit for laptop. But I'd assume the Macbook comes preinstalled with some card.
I seem to recall it was a Broadcom chip that was impossible.

im trying to set my locale info in my .zshrc by saying LC_ALL="en_US" and LANG="en_US" and if i echo those two variables it seems to work but if i do a locale command all the values are set to POSIX? how can i set my locale properly so that my weeks start with sunday etc

you may want to try revdep-rebuild -p as well

Broadcom are not generally helpful with documentation.

sendmail, help please guys. Is there an option in sendmail which allows you to define the location of your log file?

CareBear\: built in n

masa based on comments from others here i would say that livedvd's nv driver is a few revisions outdated for your card. try setting the driver to vesa

airport extreme is broadcom

k ty

hmmm, maybe i should stick with a g pci card for my linux box…

i've seen N broadcom work
one of my friends has it

Oh boy, I'd suggest replacing sendmail. :p

nah guys, im looking to keep my macbook mac, and my linux box (desktop) linux

friendly12345, -p? -p doesn't seem to exist, according to the manpage.

Doesn't it just log via syslog?

in fact im doing something i havent done before besides the wireless

I've got postfix running on alternate machines as well, the choice of sendmail aint' mine.

im fully switching it to linux, no more windows partition, and my 250 is going to be switched to ext3

can some one help with an apache2 issue? gentoo-apache seems to be dead

mzbot, teach toymakerii ask

Just ask, don't ask to ask, don't ask who's familiar. Don't ask if anyone knows about it. Just ask the question, it's the easiest way to get people to answer

ah, all other options are passed to the emerge command -p for emerge -p —pretend

I see

Just mention that -apache is silent before asking the question.

I think a channel that supports sendmail would be more appropriate to ask. This channel is about Gentoo Linux support.

fair enough CareBear

there is a sendmail channel?

whats the command to print the title msg to the screen?

You could look for one.

ali3nx now it's just a black screen. any other suggestions?

oh my god
there is a sendmail channel
#sendmail , duh.!

i cant rem what its called… title or subject or something

/j #sendmail

masa, were you by chance planning to use that dvd to install?

/topic

i was hoping to

anyone here using the wrt54g?

masa if thats the case you really dont need the desktop whatsoever
just follow the gentoo handbook

ali3nx ok, just use it command line style? or get the minimal cd?

tried and tested installer is a console

was the desktop statement for me?

masa, well you can keep that dvd for install media

with a little creativity and a console, just about any livecd will work for the gentoo install.

If I do "ld -lfreetype", and I get no errors, then everything is OK? Maybe it's just the package I am emerging?

ok

most everything you need will be downloaded anyhow

thanks a lot

I Just set up my NIC to have two IP address, and I bound Apache2 to one of them. all is well, however I was forced to create a SymLink from /usr/htdocs to /var/www/localhost/htdocs. Where can I tell apache to look in /var/www/localhosts/htdocs rather than /usr/htdocs?

does anyone have /usr/kde/3.5/lib/libkleopatra* ?
I would love it if someone could qfile that and tell me the results

masa, if you have an amd64 or 64bit intel it may be worth it to use amd64 specific install… many benefits

ok, so gtk+ compile fails too.

hmm. Someone else had problems with /usr/htdocs

i do, and i certainly will

Just a second.

Is /usr/htdocs really not mentioned anywhere in any config file in /etc ?

nope, hence m,y struggle

kde-base/kdepim

hmmm, i wonder if i really need wireless n for my linux box, i mean what do you guys thing

ali3nx thanks

think*

masa, good luck

http://rafb.net/p/2TeP7I85.html gtk+ compile failing because of expat

I think you would be a very early adopter and they always have to deal with a lot of issues.

hmmm, what about the wmp54g?

If you *NEED* draft .11n for your system or not - well only you know.

hmm, this is annoying — I want to build libkpimidentities (a dependency of kdepim-meta), and it won't build because it can't find libkleopatra

meeseontheleese, the standard for wireless -n is still in flux so it's entirely possible the currently sold hardware may be useless in coming years

Eek, it doesn't compile either!

avoid wireless - n

well basically i want something that will give me decent connection to my router, that way i dont have to deal with long long long! compile times with portage

11Mbps is already decent connection IMO.

but I can't figure out what *within* kdepim-meta would bring back that file

is 11 in g? and if so what draft?

meeseontheleese, anything faster than your internet connection should do

meeseontheleese, best thing you could do for yourself for a wireless solution on linux os find a device from madwifi compatibility list that fits your requirements and budget

I am using monolythic KDE on all systems, so I can't help there.

well see im looking to buy a wireless n router, and considering the support isnt that good for the n card atm, probably a 54g card for my linux box
great thing, all of it fits my budget

Except one system, but that doesn't have kdepim-meta or any of its deps.

I assumed ccache and distcc, otherwise internal connectivity would be completely irrelevant.

hmm, maybe i should just buy a wmp54g at the moment
hmmmm….

meeseontheleese, the dlink cards seem to work very well

a wireless N router MAY increase range but you are limited to the speed of your internet connection 11 is over kill on my 2Mbps connection

I would suggest everyone to stop using product names and start using chipsets instead. So we actually know what you mean.

d link eh?
yeah, we are running dsl atm, i believe qwest is what its called

wireless n routers usually only support 80211.n connections to other cards of the same brand

http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility/D-Link

what dlink card are we talking about ?

Will you be using distcc?

yeah, dlink is not helpful, nor is linksys. both brands tend to change chipsets randomly.

ah thanks

yw

Why is the connection speed between your linux system and the router especially important?
…for compile host times?

CareBear\: well i dont know much about the what the speeds are between router and card, mostly i just want decent speeds comparible to cabled speeds

anybody know why gtk+ is failing with expat?
better yet, anybody know how to fix it?

which version of expat are you using?

the latest

the latest ~? expat-2 or something?
that would probably do it

expat-2.0.1
yes, that would.

CareBear\: any possible issues with a dlink card and a linksys router?

it's been breaking a lot of things
typically at runtime

mzbot, teach meatmanek expat

expat-2.0.1 has been marked stable. However, it is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. To successfully upgrade and fix any reverse dependencies (along with several other issues), run: emerge =portage-2.1.2.9 && emerge -n portage-utils && emerge -qep –nospinner world | grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF '%F %n' | awk '/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}' | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e "libtool\ncurl") | xargs emerge -1

yes, thank you
I've looked at that plenty of times

Geez. Something is reporting libfreetype.la is at /usr/local. What can I do? Please, I am so close to fix this stuff…

I understand what it does

What will you be using the network for on your wireless system?

I have run it, and it doesn't fix my _compile time_ problem.

I personally had to emerge -e gtk, although there may be faster ways

meatmanek, revdep-rebuild -X seemed to hit that issue with gtk+ for someone else earlier… i ~think~ he just skipped it and got back to fixing that last out of the needed rebuild items list

on my linux box? mostly for basic networking and internet, to keep my gentoo box up to date

There shouldn't be any issues between any d-link card and any linksys router, but we can't say much about how a d-link card on the shelf in a store, except that it's probably grey.
Any wireless technology you can buy in the world today will be sufficient for that.

CareBear\: yeah i know, im just wondering what would most likely be the best to buy off the shelf to start with, what you guys know has the better support atm
or more along the lines of what works the best atm

idk if you can buy the intel 3945 cards

CareBear, 9600 baud packet radio?

but that's what dell uses on their ubuntu laptops

madwifi has some of the nicest drivers available for linux… may likely the first to be certified for commerial sale with retail items

probably Intel 3945/4945

this is for a desktop thought, not my macbook, which doesnt have expandability

maccam94, im selling a mini pci-e one on ebay right now 4965

And I'm telling you that we unfortunately can't say anything about that because the moron vendors keep replacing the hardware in their products. All we can say is this driver works well with this chipset. It's no longer possible to say for sure what chipset a certain product will use.

i got an ebuild that is having a problem fetching so i stuck the tar.gz in usr/portage/distfiles
it still wants to fetch though
perhaps because the ebuild comes from an overlay

it appears that the gtk+ compile runs some sort of helper program which is dynamically linked to expat.

CareBear\: ah, yeah, i got you before, sadly i was hoping a certain vendor kept a certain chipset

espike, tried using a different mirror?

I've always got the feeling Intel 3945 card were rather flakey, although I have absolutely concrete evidence.

CareBear\: any chance atheros is a good chipset? already heard bad things about broadcom, though i wonder, is it really that bad?

*no concrete evidence

espike, should not matter about overlay

anyone wanna help me with one of them expat issues?? things keep dying on a gtk+ emerge…

kury-: have you tried the latest mzbot command?

lol, friendlybot12345, you're a funny one.

espike, is the file it is trying to fetch and the file you downloaded the same file name exactly?

er, friendly12345

i recommend going on newegg, and look for the most popular G products. then look through the comments for linux remarks

tell kury- about expat

Ug, I have booted my system back into the livecd and tried to do an mdadm –build /dev/md2 –level=0 –raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 and it will not build the array without the metadata. Is there anything I can do to bring this system back to life witouth reinstalling?

yeah

kury-, skip it, fix everything else required and try gtk+ again afterwards…. i have a hunch a build time dep for gtk+ is borked

in fact it keeps overwriting that file

privmsgd kury- about "expat"

I'm afraid I haven't seen more than one vendor of consumer products that are reliable; that's Sweex. They're on a pretty tight budget so stay with the cheapest hardware from Ralink. The driver situation for that is shaping up currently, although there aren't any drivers in the kernel yet.

if ya cant go over the wall… go under

meeseontheleese, if you don't mind spending money, get yourself a ubiquiti superrange 2 card, with a pci-minipci adapter.

espike, what ebuild is it and from what overlay?

also side note, how easy is setting it up, like do i need to write a bit in a config file, or do i have some config tool to use?

The Atheros chipsets work very well!

asterisk from voip overlay

I'm not sure how to use mzbot…

Uibquiti are nice, but a bit pricey.
Ubiquiti even

i personally haven't done wireless on gentoo, but i assume it uses ndiswrapper, plus wpa_supplicant if required

CareBear\: thats good, then i might go with linksys, if not i can always return it, after all im getting it form my work

there should be opensource hardware

kury, I'm currently trying to figure out how to make gtk+ compile…

There is.

they're already working on it

http://opencores.org/

does anyone use wifi in here, and if so, how hard is it to set up?

open graphics project

Where can i download it from?

I have kde4 svn installed manually. I just installed initng from the layman repo, latest release, and it seems to be bringing up kdm4, but I would like it to use kdm3. what should I do?

idk about wifi

^

did you try –skipfirst?

Linksys router should be fine. They all work pretty much.

friendly12345, skipping gtk+ would not help me compile gtk+

I see no download-chip link on that page

and yes, I have skipped everything that fails on emerge -DNuav world

AFAIK there are no utilities to help you with wireless configuration in Gentoo. You'll have to enter crypto keys and network name and such in a config file.

never mind, found it

it appears it expects the size of the download to be 1k rather than the 10 megs it should actually be

perhaps emerge -e gtk+ then

Chip you get to do for yourself, but the source is there. (VHDL usually)

recompiling my system doesn't appeal to me at this point.

friendly12345, rej ali3nx, how/what do I do with mzbot?

CareBear\: no i mean like when it comes to configuring the wifi card in my gentoo system, im going to be doing a fresh install and im wondering how difficult it might be to set it up on my network which has its own ssid and wpa encryption

kury-, you listen to what it tells you
mzbot, tell kury- about expat

Sorry, you are not allowed to do that.

bah!

mzbot hello

teach kury- about expat

kury-: expat-2.0.1 has been marked stable.

I just said - AFAIK there's no tool to help, you have to put that stuff in a config file or maybe two. There are some nice docs on the web to guide you through it though.

Guys…? Why can this be looking for libfreetype.la in /usr/local/lib? Any idea?

CareBear\: ah, do you think they will be on the gentoo wiki or the gentoo site? trying to find them atm

What is looking for it?

I think it's even in the handbook.

most use wpa_supplicant

espike, sounds like the Manifest is screwed up, you can rebuild the manifest and it would be nice of you to notify the maintainer

there's also a front-end for it

configure it seems. Anything trying to link at the end of a compile crashes because it's not found in usr/local

Which package?
Please pastebin the build log?

What ebuild are you trying to emerge (for example)?

a front end eh? like graphical front end, if so what is it called?

Tried katapult and krusader.

humm

you just emerge wpa_supplicant with the qt USE flag

Want the error?

while compiling the kernel, i get come error messages, is this normal?

Please do as CareBear\ suggested.

* warning

cd /usr/portage/local/layman/voip/net-misc/asterisk then: ebuild asterisk-1.4.10.ebuild digest

friendly, nice, mk, curious, another alternative, is there a way to use another wireless router as a bridge? like have two wireless routers to send info back and forth?

DJ-DrIP[AR]: Warnings are still present, sadly.

rej, Sparrowmelody had some stale remnants leftover in /usr/local/{bin,lib,sbin,ect} from parts unknown

ok

Oh dear. Without the "sparrowmelody" thing I didn't see his message.

ty

Sorry CareBear\.

Then those should GO.

rej, agreed

I am using irssi at the moment and text is a bit cramped xD

Come again? Explain that in a bit more detail?

well, searching for "freetype" inside /usr/local doesn't find anything else now.

then try again?

yes

CareBear\: like is there a way to possibly use a wireless router in a sort of bridge mode to connect to the other wireless router, working the first router as a bridge?

Why don't you connect directly to router #2 ?

I see that ebuild was updated today, they probably just ran into a problem making the digest

Too far away? Or just academic question?

CareBear\: lol, no worries, it was just curiousity

CareBear\: Anyway, the packages I am trying to compile are random KDE ones.

CareBear\: purely curiousity and academic

CareBear\: The output is just "can't find /usr/local/lib/libtruetype.la"

anyone remember the name of the laptop maker have a product with amd and two lcd panel and stuff folds xenox or something

Ok. There are at least two ways to do wireless bridging. One is called WDS, the other is called mesh networking. Check them out at wikipedia.

In somewhat various forms but essentially that.

it costed like 7k
anyone?

same issue

CareBear\: lol, ill do that tomorrow, need rest atm, thanks for all your help guys, your information was very enlightening

I'm afraid we need to see the complete build log.

what is the error espike?

hi there anyone can help me on gentoo

CareBear\: Sure, give me a second (using gprs modem, sloooow)

mzbot, teach gentoonewbie ask

Just ask, don't ask to ask, don't ask who's familiar. Don't ask if anyone knows about it. Just ask the question, it's the easiest way to get people to answer

Sure thing.

teach gentoonewbie about ask

Just ask, don't ask to ask, don't ask who's familiar. Don't ask if anyone knows about it. Just ask the question, it's the easiest way to get people to answer

got prob installing my wireless

tells me the package is not a tar.gz tis getting and expecting a 1k file
…. with same name as real tar.gz

hellooo

gentoonewbie, which wireless chipset?

rt2561

While the people on #gentoo, noone is a mind reader to the best host of my knowledge
While the people on #gentoo are good, noone is a mind reader

followed instruction online but got prob.. iwconfig command is not found

hmm ok.. thats one i less than any experience with… however i think i recall spotting an ebuild for such a chipset's drivers in portage

emerge wireless-tools

gentoonewbie, did you install wireless-tools

What friendly112345 said.

yup did that

What's with 12345? Difficult to type.

are you root?

yup

env-update && source /etc/profile

hit tab after friendly

CareBear\, tab is your friend :P

CareBear\: someone else has the friendly username I think

I have not written a tab completion script for my ircII.

actually after frien

So friendly2 then? :p But 12345?

espike, you on amd64?

CareBear\: http://rafb.net/p/WF6GS396.html

ya

the strange thing is iwconfig is command not found

i can modify the ebuild to point it the the correct file

nn all

can I allow another user to bind to port 80 aside from root?

but then the ebuild is the wrong size so it wont compile

Hi, I just installed gentoo on my laptop and now am having trouble getting the nvidia drivers running. Anyone have experience with nvidia mcp51 and geforce 6100?

CareBear\: There it is. I skipped most of the boring compile process but I think all the relevant stuff is there.

are you running it as superuser (root)?

I would really appreciate if you can help.

a bit with nvidia mcp

is superuser = root? yup i ran it under root

qfile iwconfig

that's the chipset

no, but you can write a daemon that opens the port as root then changes to another user like all good daemons do

nvidia-drivers don't work?

ToyMakerII, any process with the CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE capability can do so.

command not found

anyone expert on gentoo?

Oh, emerge portage-utils first then.

no, i just get a black screen. I think the problem I am having is this http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3008&start=0. Im not quite sure how to go about fixing it

I'd say there are a number of them in here.

saying not resolving ftp.. bla bla

/usr/portage/distfiles/asterisk-1.4.10.tar.gz ?

gues need to connect to the net.. but i am trying to configure my wireless card

rej, how do I run that mzbot command with a –skipfirst in there where it fails on gtk+ ??

You have no way to an internet connection besides the wireless?

thanks, I really hate Apple atm

yeah, but the one it fetches is gone because now 1.4.10.1 is out

i could but i am lazy.. trying to work it out on wireless

Is it possible to install linux on a / partition that is in a raid 0 stripe?

kury-, emerge –resume –skipfuirst

is there no way connecting to wireless without connect on wired first?

*skipfirst
xaque, entirely possible

sure, if you can provide a normal partition to load a kernel from

how can I install a specific version of a package?
can seem to get google to help me

ali3nx, thx dude… how do I do that when its this long command? emerge =portage-2.1.2.9 && emerge -n portage-utils && emerge -qep –nospinner world | grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF '%F %n' | awk '/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}' | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e "libtool\ncurl") | xargs emerge -1

can't)

man I am really stumped on this one.

ah! package=1.2.3

byteshack, emerge =category/pachagename-0.0.1-r1

You need files for drivers. Gentoo is really designed to be installed online.

thanks

Did you figure out the /usr/htdocs problem?

CareBear\: Seems to be related to libtool. In the Krusader /var/tmp/portage…/work directory there is nothing if I grep all files for "/usr/local/lib/libfreetype.la". So it's not configure detecting it wrongly.

kury-, the emerge list is cached

CareBear\: I already tried env-update, ldconfig and the likes.

Well either libtool or qt3.

how can I use CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE with currently running process like DarwinStreamingServer?

ok.. could i download it and installing it manually through usb stick?

ali3nx, ok.. thx

CareBear\: In the krusader build only this error appears:
link: cannot find the library `/usr/local/lib/libfreetype.la'"

CareBear\: No, I am going to let the gremlins win this one for now

Certainly - emerge -fp to get the URLs, then download and copy them into /usr/portage/distfiles, then run emerge again and it will pick them up.

Streaming servers are a pain in the a**

maccam94, I've built the system as a 64-bit system

You could always try emerge libtool

Someone can look up this http://rafb.net/p/BU66um28.html

I have a volume control on the side of my laptop, anyone know what i need to get it working ?

CareBear\: I tried.

probably acpi button events or something

ToyMakerII, without patching your kernel, you can't.

Ello all

I'll try with QT3 then just in case

libtool –config|grep usr.local

How am I supposed to boot a /dev/md2 device before mdadm is even loaded? That does not make sense to me.

CareBear\: Ah, OK.

Hey again. I read through that bug.

it dont matter. this is basically why ive always used the svn build of this package

sys_lib_search_path_spec="/lib /usr/lib /usr/local/lib"

Does anybody know of a CLI program that can filter mail for maildir AFTER delivery?

CareBear\: Only that.

lol, well shoot then! I think thats a bit above me

Linux starts up MD partitions automatically if they have the right type.
Eh - grep?

Hm. I'll have a shower while QT recompiles then. I'll come back later to inform what happened

Certainly - emerge -fp to get the URLs - which urls? it only shows the help for emerge

Later~

can someone explain to me what the difference between an argment and flags?

CareBear\: so if the kernel is loaded and starts booting, how is the raid devices recognized if the configuration is location on the raid, first, and second, where the devices are if the / partition houses the /dev which then also have the device to boot?

If you want utils to save to maildirs, check out qtools.

http://rafb.net/p/BU66um28.html Would anyone help me? ssh?

espike, I am testing it now….

flags are arguments

Well I am about down with DarwinStreamingServer, does anyone recommend a Good Streaming server that will allow me to host a live stream from a file (so that all users see the same thing at the same time) and then host it with apache on the same server with out running into firewall issues?

espike, got it working, I'll PM you

But arguments is everything but the command itself, so often include things that aren't flags too.
Maybe mp4live can work for you?

anyone hacked up their BIOS to accept a minipci wifi card?

ok thats a start, just reading the handbook to mount my dvd

ToyMakerII, ffmpeg may be worth looking at
it also offers a streaming server

ffmpeg was a mess, so was vlc

open framework of course

I need to embed it into a webpage as well

Again; partitions are recognized as part of an MD volume if they have a certain type. The rest of the neccessary info is stored on the partition itself.

anyone know what's up with gentoo-wiki?

realserver helix has worked good before for me

CareBear\: ah

gentoo-wiki gentoo-portage and package.gentoo.org are all down
*packages.gentoo.org

friendly12345, they're all on the same server? huh didn't know that

no they're not

friendly12345, just coincidence they're all down at the same time?

The type is 0xfd

yes they are down , ima trying to learn how to update 9 files in etc and they are down

Add the package names that you need after that command.

Certainly - emerge -fp to get the URLs - which urls? it only shows the help for emerge

ic thx

andre_, dispatch-conf

So portage-utils and maybe wireless-tools again just to make sure.

?

packages.gentoo.org was taken down some time ago due to security reasons. Gentoo-portage and the wiki only went down recently.

What wireless hardware do you have?

http://rafb.net/p/BU66um28.html is there any wrong in my kernel?

ooh ok

andre_, the favored (more reliable) command for updating those files

friendly12345, huh =/

config files in etc?

Not enough info. Complete boot messages are needed.

since it stores previous revisions of your updated config files

CareBear\: right. Do you have any ideas why my kernel would not boot. States not syncing vfs because md2 could not be found, or something like that.

But I would say something is wrong since your system doesn't boot.

andre_, correct

ok

Please provide the full boot messages so we can have a look.
netconsole

Dlink dwl-g630

gentoo-portage and gentoo-wiki probably couldn't handle the increased traffic volume (they're unofficial Gentoo sites)

CareBear\: netconsole?

friendly12345, increased traffic volume? from what? or do you mean just everyday use

the admins over at -wiki and friends have some pretty decent hardware hehe

well most packages.gentoo.org users would have switched to gentoo-portage. Dunno why the gentoo-wiki isn't working though.

how do i update them following the command?

Can you check if there's an FCC ID on the device or in the manual?

anywhere else i can find docs on doing a stage1 install, besides -wiki?
searching the forums isn't turning anything up =/

andre_, Q= drop to menu, U = use new file, M = merge differences

do gentoo have something that equals to /etc/modprobe.d/sound ? so i can save my modprobe setting for audio module?

on your disk should have docs

I don't trust the product code since the vendors tend to change around the contents of the devices without giving them a new product number.

isn't there an alsa-something in that folder?

thankyou

andre_, if you need to choose the M ( merge ) option the view you see will be left and right sides… differences between existing and new files

majorjrk, do you just want it to automatically load the sound module? if so, /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel{2.4,2.6}

CareBear its RT2561/RT61

Right - you said that! Sorry!

its k

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#stage12 ?

andre_, the left side is the existing file… choose R or L to keep or omit

seems you r the admin here?

it's not recommend to do a Stage 1 or 2 install however

No, I'm no admin.
Not here anyway.

he's just the loudest
lol jk

only you answering questions

There are very little benefits in doing so

Hi people

snagnever, welcome

ali3nx thanks

friendly12345, yes, but i enjoy tinkering =P i've got a working system from a stage3, that i'm running, so now i'm going to mess around with things a bit =D

i would be too, as would a lot of other people, but not everyone's "here" here

is there any inherent Danger to running a streaming server as root to allow it to bind to port 80?
bis there any inherent Danger to running a streaming server as root to allow it to bind to port 80?/b

Gentoo = Shit?!

sigh.. it does not want to recognize my usb stick when i insert it.. how?

i'd like to know how much time would i spend for installing gentoo here, using the minimal image and with a 2mbps connectiong

hello, troll

I can live with that.

Chavao, only from an uninformed viewpoint

try #mount in a terminal

About 300MB to download for stage3 and portage.

CareBear\: http://rafb.net/p/B7SjbZ57.html here's my message

this is the support channel, take your sorry self over to #gentoo-chat

Then another 50MB for a kernel.

it depends. How much optimization do you want? What packages will you install?

Chavao, perhaps stick around and learn something

That would be the bare bare minimum download.

Chavao, language and no trolling

Sorry
i'm just kiding
xD

CareBear\: http://pastebin.ca/659215 IN typing this, I would need to have my sata driver loaded into the kernel, not as a module. Right?

Chavao, Language.

This is just the last 13 lines. I would need to see every line (I guess a few hundred) in order to give advice about your hard disk drivers.

i don't know language
i don't knowa speak english :P

Chavao, Mind your language, I mean.

how to save the log?

CareBear\ humn, i'd like X with KDE and Flux

Chavao, kidding is what I call a goat giving birth.

ok i'll spend a considerable time :P

bit`, lol

CareBear\: i did get the soundcard working, with snd-hda-intel model=toshiba (my computer isnt a toshiba) but the sound is kinda distorted and makes this knitr sound

The kernel doesn't find your drives. It would show them between line 12 and 13. That could indeed be because you don't have disk controller drivers built-in, but built as modules.

emerging KDE will take a long time. Flux very little

CareBear\: I don't know how to save the full log file to send to you

is it at all possible to chroot into an x86 environment from an amd64 environment?

Check out netconsole. You can also use a serial crossover cable (aka null modem).

Doomhammer, It's possible to do, if I recall. Why?

Doomhammer, yes

CareBear\: cool. thanks for the extra set of eyes =]

Welcome.

hey

Doomhammer, linux32 chroot /mnt/point /bin/bash

hlieberman, considering building a livecd, but i'd want an x86 version and an amd64 version

Can you cook me a pizza? :p

hehe

ali3nx, thanks =D

Doomhammer, Ahh. Yeah, sure, you can do that. See: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/x86/chroot.xml

Tchau gentoo users, eu tava brincando, não entendi o que vocês falaram e espero um dia usar o Gentoo porque parece que ele é bem legal, e eu adoro compilar, abraço fiquem com deus

would it be easier if i took the live cd THAN emerge whatever i want?
uwould it be easier if i took the live cd THAN emerge whatever i want?/u
Chavao hehe

When i mount a windows partion with 'mount -t cifs 192.168.1.102:zz /mnt/1' and try to read the directory, i get a permission denied message. why am i unable to look in the directory?

Chavao / RudyValencia : Sorry! I know neither spanish nor portuguese - so honest mistake.

oh

Chavao, good luck

I'm not Portugese or spanish
I speak English as my regular language (I live in the USA)

hehehe

fui

At least you can tell them apart.

yeah
it's because I know a little Spanish from my job

I had a feeling it didn't look like Spanish

(I work in a Walgreens drugstore as a clerk)

Too many 'u''s.

hello

it's the "c" with the funny tail that tips me off

Telemar - brasil..

humm

ç and ã are never seen in Spanish, often in Portugese

what's the latest kernel?

or is it Portuguese

3.1.17 r2?

DJ-DrIP[AR]: Vanilla-sources?

complaining about a missing linux/config.h

yes

p-man : You need some kernel sources.
p-man : Or at the very least linux-headers.

i have kernel sources installed

DJ-DrIP[AR]: 2.6.23_rc3 ?

….
meh
nvm

i have linux headers installed as well

p-man: is the /usr/src/linux symlink present / correct? that's probably the problem

yes

p-man : ls -ld /usr/include/linux

i mounted a windows partion with 'mount -t cifs 192.168.1.102:zz /mnt/1' and try to look in the directory with 'ls /mnt/1', but i get a permission denied message. the permissions for /mnt/1 are drwxrwxrwx. Any idea what is wrong?

The username.

p-man: then i dunno =/

how do i find the version of current kernel in use

uname -r

ahahaha it works,

so what's the difference btwn. Gentoo and other distros (other than that it builds packages)?

kk

CareBear\: it points to linux-2.6.21-gentoo-r4 which is what 'uname -a' reports

how to mount usb stick ?

are the new kernels missing config.h in include/linux?

did mount.. but not showing anything on browser

I'd say that the difference is that Gentoo is a meta-distribution, it's all about choice. Where other distributions make packages with what they consider to be smart defaults and good choices, Gentoo forces you to make all those choices for yourself.

and is that going to break a lot of packages??

oh

It's fantastic for eager learners, but can be a curse for impatient users who don't really want to understand the system but only have a tool in a black box.
This choice thing also means that Gentoo is incredibly flexible and things that cannot easily be accomplished with some other distributions are usually straight-forward or in the worst case at least always possible in Gentoo.
p-man : /usr/include/linux shouldn't be a symlink, it should be a directory of it's own.

oh, Gentoo is a more flexible distro because it's compiled

Well, I'd say more because it's source based than because it's compiled.

gentoo doesn't even try to make decisions for me, so it can't possibly get the answers wrong as often as the others.. that's why I'm here

yeah

But that may have been what you meant. (I think there's a difference between the two.)

so
people using audacious
anyone having troubles with audacious's scrobbler plugin
not reporting… at all

p-man : I just emerged 2.8.0.1 without problems.

RudyValencia, also performance, gentoo allows for custom cflags and ldflags so you can compile with machine specific optimizations

it's flexible in that it uses source to produce the packages on your system instead of assuming that your system is a standard ($architecture)

CareBear\: sorry i was talking about /usr/src/linux. /usr/include/linux is a directory and it has header files in it but no config.h

p-man : Ok.

did the drive show up in mount?

CareBear\: does yours have config.h? is it a blank file perhaps? or a symlink?

no

hmm

p-man : Nope.

no.. it's not.. using gentoo livecd install 2007.0 for x86
problem is.. my router is only acting as wireless.. the wired router is not working..

does anybody know how to find out how a package has been built, of which I have the RPM file? i miss portage, USE flags and ebuilds sooo much on this CentOS box

p-man : 2.0.8.1 even. Sorry about that.

CareBear\: is that masked?

What?
Try #CentOS ?

are you trying to install gentoo?

p-man : Could be ~x86

CareBear\: yeah, it's dead… so i tried here

ToyMakerII:i did.. i am up to the point configuring my wireless to connect to the net
with no wired connection

are you using any sort of security on the router? I seem to remember having issues in that respect so I opted for a wired solution

what about a visual installation for gentoo? ^^

ToyMakerII:its security for my wireless..

snagnever, milage may vary

but then my wired router.. (netcomm 4 router with wireless) not working

there is. it doesn't work very well - too many variables for that style of management to handle effectively

=/

is the wired working with another machine perhaps?
i.e. this is a problem specific to your gentoo install?

no.. i meant my dsl modem itself is got issue..
only wireless is working now..

how can I remount a filesystem without unmounting it?

anyone else having problems with 2.6.20-r8 and alsa-driver in portage?

hmm, if I remember right in order for wireless to work with security I needed an app like wpasupplicant

mount -o remount /

*kernel 2.6.20-r8

mount -o remount,options

which makes life difficult as you cant connect to portage to get it

thats why trying to get my usb stick recognized

Gentle`: CareBear\ thanks

ahh ha

When I plug a network cable into my Notebook, the light on my network switch doesn't come on. Does that mean I have no network support in my kernel, or does that mean my notebook's ethernet controller is fried?

already downloaded the files but the thing is usb stick is not showing

CareBear\: I recompiled the kernel on another machine and copied the kernel over, I think it will boot this time. I am stoked.
thanks for your help earlier

hummm

It could mean: bad cable, bad card, bad port on switch

it's a little connfusing in the begining, but afterwar, it get's a little clearer

The lights should come on without kernel support

anyone else having problems with gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r8 and alsa-driver in portage?

the port is definitely good. Also, the cabel is definitely good

you've used it before?

is the flash drive ntfs? if not try looking for /dev/sda1

Novie, I have three computers here, I just swapped cables and ports and they are definitely working fine

Being a notebook, it may have some power saving mode?

Also, I used that ethernet port previously when I installed Gentoo and emerged files
Hmm I booted into Gentoo to the command line

heh, what's up with gentoo-portage.com .. seems down

It is plugged into AC as well

it may also be under /dev/usb

I actually popped the battery out so that heat wouldn't decrease it's life expectancy

Well, ya got me then…

no its fat16

Man this is a brand new notebook. I am going to be really unhappy really soon

erm.. how to access to /dev/usb? does it show on the browser?

use the terminal

I don't have much experience with notebooks, but on a desktop, if the hardware is good, the lights will come on even before the OS boots

cd /dev

that is my experience as well
Does anyone know offhand what kernel option provides ethernet device drivers for Marvell?

it says bash"cd/dev: no such file or directory
it says bash:cd/dev: no such file or directory

there should be a space between cd and the /

I have selected three things, "Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)", "Generic Media Independent Interface device support" and "EISA, VLB, PCI and on board controllers"

ic
then?

the marvell yukon is a gigabit port afaik

I don't think my notebook came with gigabit =p

i have no other drives, and the names sans 1 don't already exist.

it says /mnt/usb does not exist

Thank you very much!

try mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1

Sometimes the PCI ids are in /usr/src/linux/include/pci_ids.h instead.

or type in ls -af /mnt

same thing

Then first look up the macro name there, and grep for that in drivers/net

space after ls and after af

anyone good at framebuffers?

What's the problem?

how do i emerge java run time

well never used them made uvesafb work with my intel chip but i would like to have a 1280×800 resolution fb

That sounds like a good way?
uvesafb that is

also not sure what to use ? intelfb or uvesafb (uvesafb needs kernel patch). also i dont know about initrd

you need 855resolution for that I think

emerge sun-jre-bin

855 ?

what was the resuld of ls -af /mnt

then?

thanks
