Seems to be something in simpletest though? The whole test case works fine when I run it from the cli. This is just through the simpletest eclipse plugin.

you don't need to. Change the apt source URLs and do dist-upgrade. I highly recommend that you switch to kernel 2.6.18+ and new glibc before doing that.
