Common Linux problem: USB Hard Drive read only

Well, i've a small problem here. My system, automatically detects and mounts my USB hard drive. However, it puts it on read only mode although i can clearly read a rw option in /etc/mtab. Does anybody know why, and how to override this?
Lopa: man fstab
Lopa: and also man mount
Lopa: adjust it's mount parameters in /etc/fstab file
i was always capable of writing to it, it's just that today it doesn't, i'm not sure what i've changed

also depends on fs type .ntfs is allways ro
it still claims it's a read-only filesystem
kyoman: unless you have ntfs write support enabled in yer kernel
awol …isch
i have a couple of FAT: filesystem panic messages
awol do u recomend that :)
yes, i unmounted .. but here is the intereting thing ..
nope
hehe
when i unmount, the icon for the device remains on the desktop ..
i dont recommend having anything to do with ntfs actually
and when i click on it, it mounts again
Lopa: you have to get out of the point & click mentality
Lopa: forget everything wincrap taught you
Lopa: throw it out of the window
ok
what do you think the prob is?
Lopa: now right click on the usb hd and select umount
so i unmount .. no problem ..
so… what's the question again?
still read only ..
Lopa: did you edit fstab file like i told you to?
vfat doesn't have permissions?
Action: awol taps on Lopa's head again….  *tap* *tap*
maybe the driver prtents that everything is owned by root.root?
hello? anyone home?
Lopa: vfat doesn't have any concept of file permissions
Lopa: and if you want normal users to write to it then you have to enable that in fstab file like i been telling you *sigh*
add users option and umask=000
man mount for details
!wtf rtfm?

rtfm is Read The Friggin' Manual doofus!
it's not a permission problem ..
the filesystem is readonly, it is not a matter of permission
?
Lopa: i'm about to put you on /ignore or just /kb you for being too stupid…. are you even paying ANY attention to what i'm typing?
yes, I am
Action: awol taps on Lopa's head again….  *tap* *tap*
hello? anyone home?
Lopa: did you edit fstab file like i told you to?
NOT mtab…. i said fstab!?
mtab: nothing appropriate.
lol
fstab (5)            - static information about the filesystems
Action: awol taps on Lopa's head again….  *tap* *tap*
ok, it's fixing a lot of crap over there
hello? anyone home?
Action: awol taps on Lopa's head again….  *tap* *tap*
talking about free clusters …
huh?
what is?
what have you done now?
i think he have u on ignore awol ….
i'm about to /kb him i think….
hehe
i haven't /kb'd anyone in quite awhile actually…
the drive really is dying on me
come when when bth yer hd and yer brain are in good working order again…..
