Alrighty Im trying to configure grub for use with SATA to this point Ive only used IDE Ive set the kernel line

Parser not found in Gnome package

yep.

Really? I haven't seen that.

Milo-, I see the site gentoo-portage.com and see that the kde-3.5.7 is released..

milk-it yep

oh the UN's website has been hacked

thanks kerframil and LoZ1987

anyone managed to build seamonkey with gtk 1.2 ?

milk-it btw, kde related issues should be discussed @ #gentoo-kde

!ru

np alvin_lee

but lots of people has issues with this stable release of kde-3.5.7

CareBear\: I've been going over the problem with someone. he ran into it with app-portage/gentoolkit-0.2.4_pre6.

In fact, I'm one of themm

bloated

Milo-, but my emerge given't this option to update my kde

CareBear\: -X is apparently not valid anymore and "leaks" to emerge, even if it is on the left side of the "–" expression.

My system is hosed! everything needs libexpat.so.0, but revdep-rebuild fails.

milk-it yess

CareBear\: annoying

Ok, I have .3-r1

^^ see what I mean

aff
Milo-, thanks man!

But russian channel there is?

teach n3kl about expat

dev-libs/expat-2.0.1 has recently been marked stable (this is necessary for upcoming versions of other packages in portage). Unfortunately, it is not ABI compatible with earlier versions so some breakage is to be expected. We recommend to run: emerge portage-utils gentoolkit && emerge
-1 $(qlist -qICe expat gettext python XML-Parser dbus apr apr-util) && revdep-rebuild -X –library libexpat.so.0 –

suggesting r-r just isn'g good enough.
isn't*

Gentoo

not by itself.

cruxeternus heh, not many people read the topic

CareBear\: noted

yup, i see

I'm not overly impressed with the way it's been handled. see the command above? I'll bet that there are more corner cases that crop up (apr/apr-util is one I've recently added).

i'm sorry, but haven't heared of russian channel

Maybe #gentoo-ru ?

CareBear\: nope, empty

gahhhhhhh

-ChanServ- CareBear\ [#gentoo-ru] Welcome to Official Russian Gentoo Linux

Ah, thanks

what the heck.. I just revdep-rebuilt my expat library

(CareBear\) Thanks

and now re-checking
and it wants to do it again?
….

i know, stable packages shouldn't make damages on stable system

why wouldn't two of my HD's show up in /dev?

but it seems that's all maintainers can do in this case

Maybe your kernel does not have the right drivers.

sata?

portage is not good enough to ensure that that doesn't happen. that's no secret. but! with some knowledge and a little forwarning, one can handle upgrade paths without undue pain in most cases.

are they on an SATA/SCSI card?

no
plain ol IDE

and you have other IDE drives?
(that work)

Please pastebin dmesg.

no, the other is SATA

Can anyone recomend a good CMS?

very advanced users will be ok. but the onus is on developers to make sure that users have what they need to do exactly that. I don't think that's happened here.

hmm funny

i don't get this.. when i'm playing mp3's and doing something IO intensive my music keeps skipping.. i've tried playing with nice levels but even at -20 my music still skips.. why is this?? (my computer is plenty fast)

Maybe you don't have DMA enabled for your hard drives.
Please pastebin dmesg.

then it sounds like the IDE driver was compiled out. try to load "ide-core" and/or "ide-disk" modules with modprobe maybe?

well you could make a realtime setup for your music system

Milo-, Do you see the new error?

yes
I notice your kdelibs package is masked
which I don't understand why, since it should be stable now

CareBear\, http://pastebin.com/m1757f180

expat–

gentooer topic

I don't understant, too

um nvm

/etc/portage/package.keywords

if you have to keep unmasking your kdecomponents
then don't bother upgrading

Hello.

it's not worth the trouble
nothing wrong with KDE 3.5.5

dma_intr: status=0×51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
dma_intr: error=0×84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
^ that doesn't look good..

wee, hard drive errors.

I've always used IDE drives but am now trying to configure grub for SATA. my kernel line reads as "kernel /boot/gentooImage root=/dev/sda3", which is what the root partition is supposed to be. Yet, I get a not-syncing panic and am told to append a new root=option

There's a CRC error on your 160GB drive which causes DMA to be disabled for the entire IDE chain.

gentooer what are you trying to do?

Yeah, you found it.
I strongly suggest you back up all data on that 160 GB drive and then promptly throw it away.

but hdparm still says DMA is on..

CareBear\: http://pastebin.com/d5a5da1c7

hmm..

boo, you have your sata drivers built into the kernel?

hdparm is lying. Trust dmesg.

that's only if hdb is a hard drive
is that your CDROM?

well this sucks..

It's a hard drive.

no it's my main hard drive

I do believe so, where specifically is that?

Read pastebin.

didn't check that

what is the make?

i'd say the drive is going bad

BadCRC is a really serious error. You will start losing data on that drive.

Milo-, Are you kde 3.5.7-r2 blocking?

backup and do a lowlevel format on the drive before you toss it

Eventually the drive will be completely dead - you won't be able to mount it at all.

boo, i don't know which you need, they're your sata drivers

that probably explains why sometimes when i boot up, grub can't find it

Make sure you preempt that ASAP. Buy a new drive tomorrow. 160GB will be pretty cheap.

get a SATA Raptor if you can
screw IDE
anyone know how to get rid of the "auto" floppy icon on my XFCE4 desktop?

SATA yes, Raptor not so sure, I've heard they have a lot of warranty returns on them.

ok.. well this has been going on for nearly a year.. guess it's time to fix it

milk-it nope, not masked or blocked

i've had my raptor for 3 years
never a problem
74GB version

Yeah, I've got 'em. =\

OUCH!! I sure hope you have time to replace the drive before it gives up.
If you have a lot of data on the drive that you haven't accessed in a while it may all be corrupted.

Whats busy box do?

no one ? (anyone know how to get rid of the "auto" floppy icon on my XFCE4 desktop?)

cla any news on the package.portage.org? saw a mail list saying it's not coming up :/

orlly, 'busybox' is a small sets of core shell applications used for recovery systems and initramfs and such.

it bsaically is all the basic tools sharing the same code

Milo-: Learn to use 'eix' instead

It's a single program that holds simplified versions of many utilities that are normally in separate packages or files. It's used mainly for embedded systems and/or initramfs.

cruxeternus packges.portage.com is a lot betteer option

Milo-: eix does the same thing (albeit only for your current arch)

First, your kernel is a bit old.

eix *

I'm waiting for 2.6.23 to gentoo-source for the CFS

cruxeternus eix doesn't list the versions

Milo-: You haven't seen it lately then

oh

Milo-: Time to re-emerge it

and you have to keep resyncing it

CFS is going to rock

Milo-: it does.

overrated. use a ck kernel right now.

Milo-: Just learn to do 'eix-sync' in place of your 'emerge –sync'… and you'll always have it up-to-date

Milo-: not really, i didn't see any mail about that

Further, you indeed do not seem to have DMA enabled for your IDE drivers.

cla i really hope it's only a rumour
cruxeternus i don't do emerge –sync that often either :p

Milo-: should be, as i read mailing list every day

CareBear\: ok, strange. they were there before I popped in the new MB. OK, off to build a kernel, thanks CareBear\

Milo-: The reality is that packages.gentoo.org needs work before it can return. And resources to perform that work are not yet available. So, I would learn to use other tools in the meantime. :/

That's because you're missing the specific IDE driver for your chipset, right now you're using the ultra-compatible, but sub-optimal, generic IDE driver.

i only do emerge –sync if there is something interesting in the packages.portage.org :P

Milo-: Ouch. A Catch 22

cruxeternus what kind of work there is to be done?

Milo-: they are migrating to IIS 6.0

A different mainboard will usually change which drivers you need.

Milo-: Nothing we can help with, I'm afraid.

Best of luck!

ah okay :C

Milo-: j/k

likewhoa didn't even notice yet you replied :P
until now 8D

i 3 lighty!

There's that russian thing too.

is there something i need to do after revdep-rebuild? :P
because after revdep-rebuild when I do revdep-rebuild again, it just shows the same stuff that it just did
and does it again

nginx

CareBear\: pardon me?

Check it out.

aight
cool, supports ssl,fastcgi,pcre,imap, & webdav

And sends all your bank account information to an ISP in Siberia.

Haha.
Do you have experience from it?

wait that money i send was not to help pay the king's cable bill?

Milo-: did revdep-rebuild finish correctly? if not, delete the .revdep-rebuild.* files from /root/

CareBear\: No, sorry, was taking cheap shots at the Russians. My apologies.

Well, the russian mob did rob a bank here in .se.
hack

rubikcube yes, it did, and suggested to re-run it to make sure everything is alright
but meh, i'll re-run the command mzbot keeps teaching people :P

Didn't get more than .8 M EUR though.

i've seen that command today so many times that soon i'll remember it complitely

Milo-: did it need some time to recalculate everything or did it just reuse the old config files? if so, remove them first and see what happens then
bMilo-: did it need some time to recalculate everything or did it just reuse the old config files? if so, remove them first and see what happens then/b

Later ppl.

rubikcube it did need some time to recalculate everythiing

Milo-, the commands that mzbot shows will emerge the same packages over-n-over

and it keeps recompiling my app-emul packages

Milo-: no further tips from my side then

I think my head is going to explode. $ grrr="I hate webapp-config!" ; for ((i=0;i=99999;i+=1) ; echo $grr ; done

rubikcube yep :P
Build finished correctly. Removing temporary files…
:C

bash: !": event not found

and now testing if everything is alright, i'll do revdep-rebuild
broken /usr/bin/playdv (requires libgg.so.0 libgii.so.0)

Hah. ;-)

lol baxter_kylie forgot do and )

and see the same packages are still broken

Indeed.
Still doesn't change the absolute hell of webapp-config

instead do, while true;do echo $grrr;done lol

Haha

what's wrong with webapp-config?

Eh. Complex. I have an apache server that I want to install an app to. Unfortunately my apache installation is on a debian server and the app is a web extension of an app handled by gentoo and versioning/patching needs to stay consistent so I had thought it would be possible to have gentoo
handle the package and just point it to a samba share on my apache server but it's proving much more difficult.

oh i see

For the life of me I can't seem to get it off the /var/www/* chain

edit /etc/vhost/webapp…
change the vars on there..

i dont understand why i have so many broken library links :C

Milo-: wear a helmet next time.

revdep-rebuild is not fiing them
so i guess i will have to do it all manually :C

good luck with that.
you can always add "init 6" to /etc/conf.d/local.start and reboot to punish the pc.

"modprobe -l" is trying to look in "/lib/modules/2.6.19-r5/modules.dep" but it needs to be looking at "/lib/modules/2.6.21-gentoo-r4/modules.dep" how can i change where it's trying to look?

I'm following the handbook for a stage 3 install. And currently I'm trying to run modprobe -l, but when I do so it complains about me not having the 2.6.19 kernel information. Yet I'm using the 2.6.22 kernel
wow, same question as him

heh

linux-2.6.21-gentoo-r4/

oh that.. i know the answer

PercocetPenguin: Have you rebooted into your 2.6.21/22 kernels?

i'm still installing, i haven't setup grub or anything yet

no, according to the handbook it says to configure modules while chrooted, before booting into it

see if webapp-config has an update..

What kinda system are you installing it on econobeing?

Can you point me to the handbook page you're looking at?

sure one sec

laptop, dell b130, its only a couple years old

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?style=printable&full=1#kernel_modules
trying to view available modules

Whats a good program that I can use to monitor my system stats

I have a directory full of MP3 files I'd like to be decoded to WAVs. 'lame –decode *.mp3 *.wav' doesn't work. How else can I do it?

for i in *.mp3; do lame –decode $i $i.wav ; done

htop,dstat

Wow, that's interesting. I don't think that would work at all. Hrmmmmm.

your files end up with names like blah.mp3.wav but it'll work

Can I get either of those with emerge

use quotes and parameter subtitution.

I'm not quite sure I understand, what do you mean 'for i in *.mp3'?

${i%mp3}wav

sounds like a homework assignment

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7#k

it means the variable $i will loop through every match for *.mp3

Are any of the modules you've built required for booting? (Like driver controllers or filesystems?)

can use ${i%%mp3}wav to get around that

interesting. I always used basename

i'm getting frustrated

What would the command be then? 'lame –decode $i ${i%%mp3}wav'?

for i in *.mp3;do lame –decode $i ${i/wav/mp3};done

just cant fix these library problems

I don't think so

or you can use only one % and save one character of typing :P

i'll check real quick

oh that way.

you'll want some quotes. $i may expand to several parameters if filenames hae spaces in them

yep

Hey Guys. I am trying to find the x86_64 bit stage3 tarball of gentoo but I'm having a tough time locating on the mirrors. Can someone direct me am I missing something??

oh yeah, throw in some quotes

Then bookmark that step, and perform it *after* you reboot into your new kernel.

Carm, it's called 'amd64'.

use quoting for spaces, or use mv with parameter subtitution to replace spacing with _ or -

That said, udev generally autoloads everything you'll need anyway. That step is almost never necessary.

hey guys, quick question if anyone can direct me to a reference for (or in fact the command) that one uses to verify the grub setup.

now why would I want to rename my files just for convenience for a script?

Hmm okay so a lot of MP3 files have spaces in them…actually all of them do

This applies to you as well.

So where do I put the quotes?

udev sucks. use static /dev

or just find /lib/modules/ -iname '*.ko'

i got a script that renames mp3 files according to info from idv3.

lame –decode "$i" ${i%%mp3}wav
?

Ahh thank you all

"$i" (the quotes) means "treat $i as a single variable"

around the 2nd one too

"${i}"

I'm going to continue the install and see if I can keep going. I made all necessary modules built in

lame –decode "${i}" "${i%%mp3}wav"
Like that?

yep

yea

could i just create a link to 2.6.21-gentoo-r4 from 2.6.19-gentoo-r5

it's a learning experience

I have an intel xeon processor I assume that the amd64 version works for both?

yes

$ lame –decode "${i}" "${i%%mp3}wav"
Could not find "wav".

no, modules are identified by kernel version. can't load incorrect versions

The principle though, is that modprobe -l will always look in the /lib/modules for your currently booted kernel (2.6.19, in the case of the install cds). So, it's strange the handbook would tell you to do that. :/

bloddy confusing :/ thanks guys

oh, you're looking at /usr/src, don't mind me then

Quick question. Do I really need a /boot partition?

don't think so
as far as i know you only NEED / and a swap partition

you don't NEED swap. highly recommended, but…

i just realised something

if i had 2gb of ram would I need a swap?

try "${i/mp3/wav/}"

you always want swap

why the hell, am i doing revdep-rebuild in the middle of emerge –update –deep –newuse world? 8D

I don't care if you have 128 GB of RAM, add swap

you forgot the for loop..

i made mine 512MB, i never fill up my 1GB

$ lame –decode "${i}" "${i/mp3/wav/}"
Could not find "".

most of my problems are because of outdated packages -_-

lol ok

PercocetPenguin, i have 2gb ram, i disabled swap.

Wow this is pretty lame (haha)… the flac command decoded so nicely: "flac -d *.flac"

lol

nice

one fun thing you can do with flac files is "oggenc *.flac" to make ogg vorbis from them

it's not a matter of having "enough RAM". a lot of apps will allocate memory but ultimately never use it again. that RAM is best stored in disk so it's available for the disk cache. don't let RAM stagnate when you can let your swap partition stagnate.

This is frustrating…I only have about 30 files so I think I'll just decode them to WAVs individually

Ok my / partition is reiser fs, I don't have a /boot partition. do I need to add notail to my / partition opt in fstab?

yes

ok ty

unless grub handles reiser correctly

PercocetPenguin, i'll admit, i haven't used 'notail' on my root and it hasn't bitten me, but who knows…

i'll be using lilo

(LILO user here, my /boot is ext2)

anyone have the gentoo logo in svg format?
or atleast 48×48?

you'll probably want that anyway because notail is really bad news for performance.

PercocetPenguin, that only matters with grub. lilo doesn't care.

sorry, tailing is. notail counters the fact

ahhh ty

only notail just jams data in any handy block, which is rubbish for storage efficiency

I've got a box with a BIOS that swears it boots to CD, but won't.
Is there any "easy" way to netboot the Gentoo ISO?
Is anyone here?

yes, but nobody probably knows

Okay.

just wait a few minutes

(It's strange, usually there's a little chatter going on here most of the time.)

yeah, you should see my logs

anyone have the gentoo logo in svg format? or atleast 48×48 ?

http://images.google.de/images?q=gentoo%20svg&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/it/4/45/Gentoo_logo.svg

rubikcube, thanks man

anyone know the lengthy command for grub to verify the partitions ?

ls | sed -ep -e s/blah\./"foo'bar - "/| xargs -l -t mv '{}'

What is the graphical program that you can use to pick USE flags?

there is a curses program called ufed

how do I load the ati and gl module in xfree86 in the live cd?

kuroo maybe?

maybe modprobe fglrx

Can you pastebin (rafb.net/paste) your errors?

for the ati proprietary drivers capable of 3d acceleration

checking for Apache module support via DSO through APXS… apxs:Error: /usr/bin/apu-config not found!.
any ideas?

cruxeternus, what i'm basically trying to do is rename a bunch of files and the new name has a '….xargs is complaining with:xargs: unmatched single quote; by default quotes are special to xargs unless you use the -0 option

mzbot teach milo world
teach milo world

The world file is stored at /var/lib/portage/world and contains a list of packages that have been previously emerged as a result of being _explicitly_ given to emerge as parameters (i.e. unnamed dependencies that get emerged don't make it in). As an emerge target, "world" effectively refers
to all of the package names defined in this file (and also implies "system").

whoopsie

You shouldn't need xargs to rename files.

calculating world depencies is taking awfully long :

so it looks like apu-config is now apu-1-config…checking for Apache module support via DSO through APXS… apxs:Error: /usr/bin/apu-config not found!.
any ideas what i need to do so other packages can find it?

what is it that you're trying to do?

cruxeternus, well the files are named stupidly….i'm basically just trying to clean up my mp3 collection

can you elaborate on your requirements?

if i was to have windows and gentoo both on my pc and use grub for the boot loader, how would i make windows not load the nt boot loader into the mbr so grub will not replace it?
i want to be able to boot gentoo directly and chain load the nt boot loader

kerframil got any suggestions, my emerge -uDNav world is taking awfully long to calculate its depencies :P
in fact, it's been calculating depencies for over 10 minutes :o

kerframil, sure…i have a bunch of files that are separated by periods instead of spaces, and are prefixed incorrectly….the correct prefix has a single quote in it

and usually it takes 30-60 at max

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_Windows_after_Gentoo

running it on a 486? lol

portage has been slowing down with each upgrade

LoZ1987 amd64 with x2 cpu

Milo-: oh dear, that is a long time

whee, i was starting to lose hope
but then kerframil replied and it finished calculating

kerframil, so i'm piping the outpt of ls to sed and then to xargs….the output looks fine up until it gets to xargs, where xargs complains about the single unmatched quote, which is where i'm stuck

Milo-: bet your hdd was more or less glowing when calculating deps :q

i think it had it's cigar break

heh

Did you try escaping the '? (\')

is there a way to add ipw3945 etc modules to install disk?….i only can use wireless at the moment and would like to install

_MP, i have the same problem
with rt2×00

can I see an example filename and the desired result?

kerframil, sure, one sec

Hello

cruxeternus, i've escaped the single quote in sed, but the output from sed needs to be escaped

psykon, i did a bit of a google on the topic but couldn't find anything…you have any luck?

I installed dhcpcd on my gentoo 2007.0 machine. However I didn't do it by emerge.. because the machine doesnt have internet. Now when i try and configure my network cards with dhcp, it says i have no dhcp client even though i do.. how do i fix this??

_MP, i just use the ubuntu cd to install
it includes the drivers

figure out what it checks for, put that in place

ah good idea…tried knoppix but that didnt work, will give ubuntu a try

kerframil, lil.jon.and.the.Eastside.Boys.Get.Low.mp3 to Lil' jon and the Eastside Boys - Get Low.mp3

yes I have tried that.. but how would i find out where emerge installs dhcpcd?

sylar, slocate -u
sylar, slocate dhcpcd

read the scripts that look for it

yeh however I installed it.. I built it and did make, make install
ok what script does conf.d/net invoke?

Guys, is this scenario possible, I created a set of public and private keys on server A, and use this combination to log onto server C. Can I now simply copy this set of keys over to server B instead of generating a new one? I would like to jump in to server C from server hosting B as well.
