I have USB keyboard after some time without working on PC my keyboard doesnt work I have unplug my USB and plugged
my Generic 104-key PC (US English) keyboard serves what I need to do
mesof, that the ISP block the 995 port
speaking like a champion
it happened to me, i never thought it would be true, and it sounds weird, but it happened we first got dsl
champion of what?
did you have it working before with your current isp?
mesof, yes
champion of using the simple for what is necessary rather than the extreme
mesof, it works fine in my laptop i think
okay then i'd forget about the isp problem then
check over configurations
the difference between using compiz vs. a simple window manager
mesof, I have not modify anything
how unconvenient, I need to type in U then the numbers…
i would just check the configuration over
hello
very unconvenient
is the laptop running the same software?
mesof, maybe my internet connection is too slow?
mesof, yes debian lenny
it's not that
gonzaloaf have you done a straight ping test
i mean i doubt it
yigal, ping who?
i doubt that to be the problem
perhaps google ?
debian
yes, google
no compose needer either, my Ctrls are safe
try google
needed*
yigal, mesof , google responds the ping
good the question is how fast
yigal, very slow
ah, sorry to hear that
yigal, 180ms average
are you downloading a lot?
mesof, nop
Can anyone tell me how I can install unison-gtk without unison?
that is slow but not that slow, what type of connection do you have?
maybe try calling gmail?
are you a paying customer?
mesof, nop
than your only option left is to continue searching
yigal, mesof , when I ping gmail it takes 250ms average to answer
bah, documentation bug
hay i got opera instazlled, How can i tell where hte Plugin directory is ???
DavidProck1981, i'm just guessing, but maybe something like ~/.opera/ ?
or rather software bug, man interfaces actually says how pre-up should behave
I think you can configure the directories where it looks for plugins somewhere in opera
where do apps get installed at, thier data dir
ok
ask the opera guys
it may be another application interfering
opera is nt shipped with debian becuase it's closed source - but if you';ve installed the .deb, dpkg -L will help you
did you try closing the other apps?
mesof, yes
does it download some messages?
oh cool thanks
mesof, with netstat I dont see any connection established in port 995
mmm, black hart stout is definately an improvement to mackeson stout
/usr/lib/opera/plugins
mesof, I have another gmail account I it receives messages normally;
i'm not sure really
does anyone know how to use vim to edit wordpress blogs using vim using vimpress or any other method for that matter?
you'll probably want to use something like itsalltext or similar.
d
is that a text editor?
no, it's a firefox plugin
try copying that exact configuration
it looks like the Debian installer makes the default partition table format "msdos"? Is this widely done/
there is really no point in using that type of environment to type my blogs
and also do not use both at the same time
mesof, I did that
i am very comfortable with vim, and people have made "broken" scripts that do 1/2 the job i am simply trying to see if anyone has hacked on them
well if you use w3m it can call vim as the external editor
but thank you
interesting idea
the point is that you just click a button and any text area can be edited in vim or emacs or nano or jed or whatever you prefer.
yes, yes that is why it is interesting
i will look into it, i forgot my pasword and screen can only have so many terminals in it at once
yeah, that number is about 128
hm, might be more, even
hmm what is my phone number..
1-900-h0ts3×0r
if I have a router that doesn't do DDNS, can I setup a Linux server to do it? How would the server know when the external IP on the router has changed?
heh
lol, its good stuff
yes, use ddclient
why use a router? Just set a linux box up on the perimeter hand have it route packets.
you mean… a router
yes, but not a tacky little blackbox with a broken web UI
cause my router rght now has it built-in and I don't know how to do it on Linux.
whatever tickles your fanny
how does the client know when the router's external buy dedicated ip has changed?
the client doesn't care, but you can find out the information
one of those linux boxen inside a tiny little case would be nice
a little dream come true
dwm
low power consumption for one thing
nice little freescale or arm thingy
I wonder why the scroll part of this touchpad doesn't work on synergy clients..
yes, yes you remind me of the asus 200 dream machine laptop
s/200/$200
gumstix or something. Yeah. My p3 burns way too much power for something which just routes packets.
not very synergistic then is it? ;P
if I try to scroll with it, it shows the little scroll cursor in the center of the server, but doesnt scroll on the clients
probably pay for itself over the course of a year
something like
not at all. if I plug in a usb mouse the scrolling works on clients
which is why its puzzling me.. a scroll should be a scroll no matter what
solar power?
something about the way the driver software is for the touchpad in windows must be fucked up
no just power savings
any surprise?
currently takes at least a decade to pay for itself. Peak oil might bring that down.
no, I guess not
I haven't really been looking for bugs, but I'
ve found a ton
the good old turning point of a non-renewable resource
wow, i'm starting to see 'peak oil' being used more often
MSIE7 seems to have all kinds of stupid little focus and select issues
2006 was the year environmentalism went mainstream
though it'll be another 10 before it's more than a collection of good intentions and buzzwords
yeh. a lot too late for my taste
i was celebrating earth in 1978 and i was born in 79
om.
people were bitching about this 30-40 years ago, and no one listened
no one ever listens when people are bitching
its the end of the earth - no worries - both the aztecs and maya agree in 2012
if you're clever you'll bitch without anyone knowing thats what you're doing
eventually they do
Moin!
*bzzt* wrong
heheh for sure
yes ?
2014
eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we … have to go to work
a maya elder told me that
5 beers later i ponder what you say
except for nvz, cause he doesn't work unless he feels like it
my bossen want to give me a management job
… like I'm doing right now
well there you go
its just peoplo connecting to your port 993 and disconnecting without going-through with SSL properly then
the discrepancy is due to inaccuracies of the gregorian calendar
i'm sorry to hear
my condolences
how so, please explicate
nah, it's great. Less work, more money, and minions to do my bidding.
well then, thats good
working on invoice #1414 dont ask me were #1408, #1409, or #1410 #1412, #1413 went, or what happened to any numbers before #1407 cause I just make this shit up as I go along
but it might interfere with my research, so I'm not sure I'll take it
hehehe
you talking about the Connection reset by peer? It's some problem with my router.. if I setup my mail client to go through my local ip to the mail server I don't see it.. if I go through the internet to get to my mail tomcat server hosting I
see it.. it happens at about 10 minute intervals.
heh. I decided I need to charge an extra $100 on #1414 because they made me go to a computer store with two women last week
does your router have an internal firewall ?
hah.. i see
I had to be a bit more creative on the description though
hrrm accessing internal-service via external-address can be problematic
not sure
because what you are talking about seems to me is that certain ports are being blocked for whatever reason
i haven't studied this, i just know what they said to me. has to do with solar times, lunar times, and how each count them. the maya calendar is more accurate at doing the counting
yeah.. trying to figure out a better setup for my laptop to acess via internal ip when connected locally and external when on the public network.
it rquires an SNAT rule as well as the DNAT rule, if the client and server are on the same subne.
need water
The ports are seen from the outside.. that's not the issue.
all i know about the mayan calendar is that it is 2. one is 365 days and the other is 260 days, approximately 9 lunar months == fertility but thats about it
seriously though.. I had just eaten a HUGE lunch.. I am sitting on my couch stuffed staring blankly at the tv not planning on moving for an hour or two.. and I get a call that the secretary ruined her PC.. had to not only go get her a new one and set it up, but then had to debtakeover the
Win2k server to get shit running again, cause I don't do win2k and wasn't about to try figure out what that thing's purpose was
my router is a Linksys WRT54G.. don't have that much control over it.
if its a WRT54G then you can install replacement like DD-WRT on it, I think -)
have you at least installed DD-WRT or OpenWrt ?
if it was a normal on my time thing I would just include this on the normal weekly charges, but they made me get up off my ass on their schedule to go shopping with two women when I was hung over and stuffed to the point I could barely move
that's gonna cost ya.. heh
enyc wrt54g is actually one of the lower end models these days, for linux support
no.. it's not officially supported. I'm currently looking for a new router that will fulfill my needs.
your story sounds rather unnatural
hah.. what's unnatural about it?
it's actually pretty complex. the respective colonial governments for a long time repressed the keepers, and also for a longer time it wasn't explained to outsiders, for traditional reasons. it's only recently through various dreams and visions that they were told to share it with the
world.
found one router that has all the features I'd like.. but don't really want to spend $200 on a router.
I have USB keyboard, after some time without working on PC, my keyboard doesnt work, I have unplug my USB and plugged again but still its not running. Whats problem there?
Kevin`: are you using the router for personal or other purposes?
anyway, getting way OT now
yigal personal
Kevin`: DD-WRT is supported
I don't like dd-wrt
it's messy
Kevin`: fare
Kevin`: its better firmware than what it comes with, but to each there own
holy smokes man
yigal I rather like openwrt. clean system and it works on a bunch of types of hardware now
Kevin`: there's a few firmwares around, some better than others
this is how I do business.. I make myself available 24-7 and I charge whatever the hell I want generally speaking, if you want me to come out on call I'm charging for the call, and by the hour. if I did that I'd be charging $160 at the least… but I'm not that hard up for money and this is
comming out of the tax payers pocket.. so I don't charge much.. $75/wk but thats for maintaining the webserver.. what i did last week was way above and be
i heard good things about that one
Kevin`: i am just talking about the hardware you have
really the most work I do is inventing invoices.. I put more thought into making up numbers and descriptions for invoices than I do working most of the time
like the maori people of australia and their dream world
yigal here, I have an isp provided modem, an pentium 4 tower as main router, several access points (running openwrt, small atheros SOC devices), and some other things i'm playing with, some dumb devices like hubs
er what?
Anyone run across a database for Routers that lets you search for routers with a specific feature set?
na.. I know you could build your own though
2 different continents there, and and the english for it is dreamtime
simonrvn "it's only recently through various dreams and visions that they were told to share it with the world."
maori are from "new zealand"
JeffH toh.openwrt.org for consumer routers, covers a lot. if you want linux of course.
hardware routers are nice cause they are low-power and easy to implement.. but they always seem to have bugs and the firmware is always seriously out of date
both
australia it's aborigine
ffs i know what i'm talking about
nvz which is why you get a "hardware" router or embedded board and put something else on it
Kevin`: thanks.. I actually like the idea of getting a router with linux hosting inside.
Kevin`: yeah I guess.
anyway, getting way OT now
its true that Ninety-nine percent of Maori are born in new zealand but com on there is that 1 pecent born in Australia
simonrvn:
…
though that list doesn't really gve me what I was hoping for.. ooh well.
I'm still not sure what kinda hardware I'm going to get yet.. I'm getting a better idea of what I want to do, but still haven't translated that into what to buy yet
please go and electrocure yourself now.
thank you an honorable way out
I want to be able to spread a wireless signal pretty much across down
er town even
that should have been electrocuTe, but electrocure would have the same meaning, given sufficient current
that should have been electrocuTe, but electrocure would have the same meaning, given sufficient current
nvz one thing i've found seriously annoying, is the lack of a middle-end device with a vlan capable switch. it's available on the cheap routers if you hack them, and it's available standalone for like $300, nothing in between
jerky response you give
Kevin`: hmm.
in reply to an ignorant one
hmm?
in reply to an ignorant one
nvz the cheap host routers would normally be ok of course, but they are usually only 5 ports (6 with the router itself), and 100mbit
moronitude begets jerkiness.
moronitude heh
we should eat the dumb, an intersting idea Guerin
mmm, jerky
Kevin`: yeah.. I'm challenged with designing the technical infrastructure of our new borough building.. so I', all kinds of lost.. I haven't really bought this kinda stuff before.. its fairly new to me
in your case, that would be painful
eating you would hurt but not that much
I want to at the least be able to give limited access to our internet from the borough garage across down.. its about 0.66mi away from the new building. it would be nice for the police and other borough workers to get access to the network from virtually anywhere in town.. its only a 1.2sq mile
town.. shouldn't be that hard
nvz ubiquiti (sp) makes rather nice wireless cards
i'm wating for the come back
we need everyone connected cause right now the only way to email the street dept manager is at home. he has no internet at the garage. and it would cost more I think to get internet access at different buildings than to just share the connection wirelessly in a small town like
this
nvz and, of course, use a good antenna with it
?
Guerin:
would you like an ota sandwich?
Kevin`: well the new building is going to be at a higher elevation than much of the rest of the town.. the sooner I can decide the better.. I can have the damn construction guys put a big antenna on the roof now.. they are just now finishing up with the trusses
nvz you might have trouble accessing a central access point like that directly from something like a laptop. might want to consider repeaters for the major areas and buildings
i think i would go hungry on that diet
Kevin`: yeah thats what I had in mind. repeaters across town strategically placed forming a nice mesh network
nvz I use "repeater" in a generic sense
(proper mesh is nice)
Kevin`: its already a digital school district.. the high school and most homes with students already have wifi
i visited new zealand when i was 8 very interesting stuff, what is your relation with the maya?
i have friends who are
Kevin`: but I want to extend the same connectivity to borough employees, Police, Fire, Street Dept, council..etc
good friends, considered family
nvz would you be able to use one of the municipal-reserved bands that don't interfere with consumer wifi?
hello all
no, you'd get sick i think (ota sandwich)
Kevin`: idk. I can get away with just about anything around here.. I'm running the show.. heh
hi ,does anyone have gimp installed ?
its good to whose boss
well, compatible equiptment would obviously be easier if you didn't. plus messing with licensing
Kevin`: I was looking at these things.. forget what they were called em.. but its something the military uses to create mesh networks.. seemed a bit excessive for what I am doing though
why are you taking a poll? It's best to just come out and ask your question
yeah well I'm not the boss, I just act like it and never let em see me sweat
nvz oh? what's that, doesn't sound like something i'm familiar with
hi thedonvaughn ok
mesh wireless network
simonrvn I mean whatever tech the military uses
Hey
How would I install english on a debian system?
Would anyone please whatever tool to help me edit a pic for me please ? i would make it smaller and add a site url into it that is all.Thanks.
I'm stuck with german at this point (someone elses install taht I've taken over)
dpkg-reconfigure locales
Kevin`: ah, its called a breadcrumb
its only 2 pounds of carbon fiber i would still be hungry
scale …
aptitude install gimp-doc
Thanks. /me is glad he figured out where - is on that machine
select text tool click in pic, start typing
Kevin`: linux based I guess its like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs.. heh.. something designed for military application
Kevin`: http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT9034569280.html
i like Guerin's approach more
seems way overkill for this application
sorry,i do not have linux right now,but i have it installed on my server.
nvz I don't have a web browser
my server is put on the data-center.
nvz it Sounds like something designed for quick deployment and temporary use?
Now, the qwerty keymap
ooh the data center
Is it a package I need to install?
you don't have a web browser? hah.. thats funny
(It is currently qwertz it seems)
nvz well, I could start one, but i'd have to go into X or something
Kevin`: w3m
links{2}, lynx, etc.
fine fine i'll use a text browser and look at it
Kevin`: yeah they are self configuring mobile mesh units.. come in various shapes and sizes. some are like cell-phone sized that actual foot soldiers could carry just to tap in, and other are larger suitcase versions that are capable of backhauling and such
Kevin`: w3m is a better browser than firefox for everything other than videos, music and pictures
Kevin`: links2, w3m, lynx, wget
pictures too. you don't have w3m-img installed
like I said though this is a 1.2sq mile town located along the ohio river in a small valley, should not be hard to get decent coverage across this town
nvz you don't really need/want self configuring battery powered units though, do you, you want permanent units
i should install it, i was using firefox for everything, but it is really slow
Debian package search found nothing based on "qwerty", but loadkeys qwerty can't find the map
Kevin` right..
Kevin`: I don't need mobility
how much of a security risk is it to allow wireless clients access to my router configuration pages?
JeffH very high, if they can change settings
BTW, 'ota' is shit in Mohawk. has nothing to do with carbon fibre.
althjough it is carbon-based, and hopefully contains plenty of dietary fibre
I would assume it would still be restricted to people on the local network.
Kevin`: as of right now we got a tower on each end of town for the old fire siren.. we may be going to a sirenless setup soon. but those towers are probably already perfectly placed for this application
hehehehe
ah, i thought you were refering to carbon fiber sandwich core struts, haha
sounds good to me. ohio valley?
yep
JeffH at the most evil level, I could upload a new router firmware that looked exactly like yours but created a second hidden virtual access point that allowed me to do anything on the lan or wan network, and to monitor all trafficl.
very nice… i've down by there, some little acreage that's been set up as a nature preserve. just beautiful
Ok, it's loadkeys us
i've been*
shit thats funny
but to do that I would expect that you'd have to be on my network to do that.. I doubt they give access to the configuration website on the external ip.
Now, last question. How do I set those two (locale and keymap) to be automatic (for all logins, and even after reboots)?
JeffH what if I live a few houses down from you, and am an unscrupilous kiddie who knows how to use a computer
dpkg-reconfigure console-data and locales
console-data is the keymaps?
IIRC yeh
it generates the keymaps
also sets it, no?
or did they move it (again)
Kevin`: that's why I have a password setup on my wireless setup.
yeah,
right now the mark to the left (north) is the existing borough building where one tower is, and the other is the railroad crossing which we will be closing soon as the overpass is nearly complete.. and there is another siren tower there. they stand about two stories high
Thanks
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1223290
ubuntu is weird like that
Rebooting, I'll find out soon
i hate how they do locales
uh
JeffH password for configuring the router, or password for accessing the wireless at all
yeah yeah
i'm just saying
ubuntu's locales are annoying. they're pre-built or something
it's weird and totally nondebian
ya
Kevin`: for accessng the wireless at all.
i never got a handle on it
JeffH using what method?
oh man, nice breeze coming in with flowers on it.
wep2 I believe.
no such thing as wep2
JeffH so weak
smelled like black birch
you mean wpa2 ?
i have another xp hd paperweight
er black ash rather
I'd have to go check. something like that.
JeffH if you mean wpa2, it CAN be cracked, but takes about as long as any other password cracking by brute force, unless some method has come up that's new to me
if its worth anything at all its wpa2
JeffH the cracking is offline though
which is why i'm still wired
I use wireless with 40bit wep
Kevin`: waiting to be destroyed by the kid next door
there isn't one
but, all of my devices are configured by ssh only
Kevin`:
did you wire your whole house?
no, building's too old
and there ARE nearby houses with open access
basically this is our 1.2sq mile town I've drawn a box around http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1223298
and i don't have a house anyway
i'm thinking of switching to 802.1x or wpa-enterprise soon, actually
I don't think there are any cracks for either
Kevin`: cracks, no. A determinted intruder can still get in
script kiddies can't
do i have to open a javascript capable browser for this?
"Click here to return to the main window when printing is complete"
any idea why my router seems to be killing my imap connection at 10 minute intervals?
wingot i'm not a business with valuable data to steal or something
wingot nobody would be that determined
Kevin`: Yeah, exactly
probably.
They will go for the easier targets
saturated? some tcp settings are off?
i'm probably going to set that up shortly before I move (which I am soon), since when I do there will be lots of people with wifi near me
right now i'm the only wireless I see
if I left it wide open nobody would use it
I doubt its saturated.. I'm the only one using the port. Didn't see any tcp settngs that would control something like that in my router.. my router is quite old.
(to be fair, if I go on the roof with a directional antenna, I see other networks)
neat. outside of pittsburgh too. must be nice and quiet
good night peoples
is this a linuxed wrt54g?
Kevin`: g'night
sorry to go back to your router, but if its old enough linux can be thrown on the WT54g
yeah its pretty quiet. We've got a new borough building and an overpass nearing completion this fall.. and I'm also running for council and taking charge of all the technology
the place i was at was in ohio itself, south part
hehe cool
Kevin`: gnight
no, wish it were.
i would consider it if it's an old enough revision
its a v5.. which is vxWorks based.. and not 'offically supported'
my dad maintains the website.. updates it daily with pictures of progress around town. http://www.leetsdaleboro.net/ he hasn't moved to my server yet.. only the garden club site is on my server so far I'm going to a meeting tomorrow to talk to the fire
dept about their website.. I'll be providing the hosting and the domain name, they just need to work out the protocol of how the design will go and how everyone will get input on the
it's a v5.. so I guess not OLD.. but just doesn't seem to be very feature rich.
I'm planning on forming my own website and organization.. I've been talking about it for a long time now.. want to make a Linux Users Group.. LEETLUG
IIRC you're SOL, but don't take my word for it
cool man. neat name for the LUG
hence why I'm shopping for a new router.. trying to find one with all the options I'd prefer.
yeah well you can thank Daniel Leet for that one.. he founded this town
heh
:P
I'm just trying to make sure it progresses.. cause he's dead now
speaking of which.. if I upgrade to a gigE router am I going to have a difficult time finding a gigE PCI network card that will work on a P3?
with linux that s.
is.
yeh
dunno
if i do an "lsof -i" i see multiple ports from my machine being connected to google.com from firefox-bin(iceweasel). Why is this ?
cause you have multiple sessionss ??
probably some google thing you installed
not much point in upgrading my router to gigE if my server host is gonna stay at 100MB
multiple tabs, single window.
yep. pastebin your lsof -i
i take care that I have no google stuff installed.. except the default(?) toolbar which comes with iceweasel.
you should see this crap we paid some company to come up with.. it looks awesome the ideas they have for adding buffers to soften the appearance riding through town, and the parks..etc.. none of it will ever happen, but the ideas they submitted were incredible. The whole point was to should
in a perfect world what we could do.. so we can get funding.. but most the ideas they have we just can't do don't own the property..etc
pastebin your "lsof -i " result
noise buffers? or asethetic ones?
1524-80.67.87.46:www
multiple lines looking like above.
well if you looked at the satellite photo.. most the town is industrial.. you can see it comming down the highway.. they would put trees and bushes and such along the highway so all you see is scenery not railroads and shit
i want to see the other ports !
yeh i noticed. that would be cool. would also help air quality. i imagine pittsburgh being so close the air quality isn't great in hot weather
see the user column, is it thirst in all lines ?
the idea I liked the best host was turning this old bridge we got over the highway and railroad into a foot bridge with benches and trees and using it to connect the small residential community on that side of the tracks by the
industrial park with the rest of the residential area
oh nice
we are tree city USA.. heh.. we got signs as you ride into town.. we got plenty of trees in this town despite the size of our two industrial parks
more doesn't hurt
well looks like the google search engine box is the culprit.. i removed that .. and closed all google tabs and the connections are gone for now..
we got ordinances to protect the trees.. you're not allowed to cut one down without planting one
but yeh, so it's probably pretty good then
we actually had a ceremony this year and were handing out baby trees to people in the park
now it makes me wonder.. why would there be an established connection from google at all times .. hmm… i think it is time to make some good iceweasel patches..
shit man, i wish it was like that everywhere, even plant 2 trees
that is one thing I missed in Texas.. all the damn trees
probably because by default it makes connections a google server farm to check for phishing sites
http://www.fr.debian.org/security/2007/dsa-1346
I'm accustomed to a lot of shade.. heh
hehe
we have trees
well.. it shudnt do that unless i asked it to.. i dont want google peering over my shoulder when i browse..
where were you, west texas?
I was right on Lake Dallas.
Lakebridge Estates
east texas is wetter innit it?
I could see the lake from my bedroom window
anyone here use a gigabit ethernet card in Linux?
no
i can't afford that shit ;p
lots of springs and pine trees
red clay dirt
oh like georgia
(east texas)
not sure
i could ask my sister
she lives in georgia somewhere
I think I have one on my motherboard, but I'm not sure about that and my router is 100M anyways
my wife is from there, she told me that
sorry, JeffH
thanks muep.. seems like it's pointless to get a gigabit router at this point..
mine is too, the bmac and a 53c89x card (IIRC)
this isn't the best way to see this stuff.. they are images.. fairly big.. but its what I got.. heh
http://67.171.94.112/JT%20Sauer%20&%20Associates/
this is the good hosting company with affordable prices we had draw up ideas
d.0 Ethernet controller: Accton Technology Corporation EN-1216 Ethernet Adapter (rev
the buffer and buffer2 images show what it looks like comming down the highway, and what it could look like with a visual buffer
uh
what is the limit, like what's the top d/l speed i can achieve with a 100 nic … would that translate to 1024 down or so?
the oliver.jpg is one of my favorites.. thats realistic.. we could actually make that happen.. in the near future
am i being limited by my nic?
and not my dsl provider?
err cable
yeh that's cool
as I understand it the provider is the bottleneck right now.
the isp would be yeh
barring a packet storm or whatever
no i mean me
LAN?
100MBit is a functional limit somewhere around 7 megabytes per second
oh ok thanks dude
you might get bursts higher than that, but not for long
i'm not htere yet
when I was on 100MBit in Korea I clocked a download at 7,260k/s
simonrvn connection from firefox-bin to google persists even after I close my google.com tab, which shouldnt. Dont you think that is a security hole that can be exploited.
that's the fastest I've seen over a WAN connection
this persists until i restart firefox
you should ask #firefox on irc.mozilla.org
maybe
ok
i recommand you to upgrade your iceweal packages

damn.
*jawdrop*
that's what I said when I had to move back here.
I was amazed to see like 700kb/s to maybe 1200kb/s at one point at my friend's house the other night..
on the uni pipe i don't see faster than 1 MB/s
I'm lucky to get around 500kb/s from a good fast server like kernel.org or ftp.debian.org or something
100GB per day outbound for almost a year
we are on the same node, same ISP.. but he only has one box on his
that's what you get when you run a bittorrent distro site
I've got like 6
can I do that while debian boots in not GUI mode, I can set some background and give some space to so that all booting process in to some area, means I can specify my name or image while booting
what?
wth?
yes
you can
i ghave the sameproblem
yeah my brother does a lot of torrent crap IB and OB I stress to him often about throttling.. bittorrent can just kill a connection.. its just so damn effecient at moving data
look into grub splash images, usplash, framebuffers, others

to find factoids containing thing. see http://wiki.debian.org/WhereIsIt
even if i close the iceweasel window
another attempt by the evil empire to track the users..
i still have the google conected
;-)
got google toolbar?
i deleted a google foolbar today
and a yahoo
i think hat this is due to the iceweasel process
and other carp
hey i like that
carp
mm, carp
it isn't terminated when the window is closed !!
google to yahoo is like IE4Linux to firefox, use it only when you really cant do without it
an ESTABLISHED connection will presist until either end closes it
sure
persist*
wasn't my box
why ??
i think we shud put in a patch to iceweasel to close it.. as remote end is not going to close it anyway
if the browser is closed, it's not going to do fuck all ;p
;p
why are you telling us?
sorry.. plz ignore..
if you think it's a security problem, file a bug
(and prepare to be flamed if you're wrong
lemme confirm it before I report.
wise.
well I'm gonna walk my ass down and print this invoice.. as usual I setup security so anal I can't do it from here.
heh
actually I probably could do it from here come to think of it
I just don't wanna think that hard
the printer is running on cups, so it should be possible if I scp the file.. but I don't offhand know how to print an XLS from commandline anyhow
its only half a block away
FYI, it's just a simple littl RST packet to close it

I have hdb1, hdb2 and hdb3.. can I repartition to hdb1 and hdb2 without losing data on hdb1?
you're changing the partition size. yes
er, no rather
even though I'm not touching the partition size of hdb1?
use parted or something
oh, probably not then… use parted just in case anyway
gotcha.. thanks.
i've done it, but it makes me nervous
i tried parted once
never again
it's a PIAT admittedly
PITA
esp windows
if it's on the hd
i mean
there's some partition setting in some winnt\$BTsomethine
or not setting but what it is.. the value
but anyway
Is there a way to turn the caps lock key into a backspace (software side)?
a backspace?
caps lock is wholly unneccessary, as opposed to a backspace
xmodmap
ok, thanks
i made mine into control
But also for command line
Not just Xorg
use xmodmap
i turned mine into another shift
cp your current keymap and edit it, and make sure you load that one
oh
that's for console
on console there's another tool, like xmodmap
but I forget
i did it the old fashioned way ;p
afk, making buffalo burgers
What options do you pass to xmodmap?
i have just installed the upgrade of iceweasel
hmm I thought my bike got stolen two days ago I went outside and it wasnt there.. I just found it down in the council chambers when I went to go print that invoice. I don't remember ever taking it down there.. weird
cool, now wheni close the iceweasel window
there is no google connected !!
should consider visiting a shrink
hah, yeah right.. then who'd she see for help?

I tell people when they ask me if I got problems.. shit, I got more issues than time magazine
i tried to unsubscribe, they just keep showing up on my doorstep
heh
hehehe
our cat just loves the stuff (buffalo)
has anyone here created a small home raid setup? Was it expensive?
Thats like this girl I met on the internet.. one of her friends tried to tell me I was weird recently..
that's what mdadm is for
what's that?
s/w raid with mdadm
software raid thing
I was like no, I'm strange.. weird would suggest I am supernatural.. I'm just unlike anything you know at this point.. I am strange
heh
it's easy.. the I in RAID stands for Inexpensive
gotcha.. guess I was talking more about hardware raid.
hardware raid isn't worth it
why not?
so I changed my name on myspace to Passing Strange.. cause apparently I'm talking things to a whole new level
heh
!hardware raid
!raid
i heard raid is Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. See RAID{0-5}, [Software Raid], http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels
bah
And of course I had to do something goofy and change my photo to 3 cats humping
I can see where a raided storage server for a home network would be useful.
that is a killer pic.. I'd hate to be that little cat on the bottom though.. got one cat on her back then another on top of that one
group cat fuck
…
yeah.. I shut that friend of hers up real quick
what's faster, USB2 or 100Mb ethernet?
none of her damn business anyhow… if the girl had a problem with me being strange, she'd have told me
well, theoretically USB2 is 480Mbps
okay.. just trying to decide whether I should move my usb drive before copying some files or just copy them over the network.
I've heard no complaints what-so-ever. Besides.. I artificially exaggerate how strange I am sometimes… part of the discovery protocol.. learning your boundaries with someone new.
does a usb hard drive just show up as hdc?
nope
sdc
sd*
USB would use the scsi disk module
thanks.
scsi sounds sleasy for some reason
hey man, did you probe her scsi bus?
hm.. doesn't mount autodetect the filesystem on the drive?
in the old days scsi was said as 'sexy' on the east coast and 'scuzzy' on the west coast u.s.
it can. Sometimes.
I've never heard it pronounced like sexy
hm..
is there a program I can run that will give me info about attached usb devices?
lsusb
tx.. hm.. my usb drive doesn't seem to show up.
mmm, bacon & egg pie
i haven't either, this was like the 70s or early 80s or something
i think a guinness would compliment that nicely
quite nicely, indeed
bacon and egg *pie*?
ah well shit.. I was only born in 83
this is some sort of foreignness to you?
ya, kinda like a quiche, but with bacon and eggs
first time i've heard of it
english origins i think
flaky pastry, throw in chopped up bacon ends, sliced onion, crack in eggs, cover with more pastry, cook
ugh stfu
figures ;p
quiche with a lid
quite tasty though
now I'm hungry
it's one of the world's most portable foods, because once it's cooked and cooled it's plenty solid, and good eats hot or cold
cept I don't have anything half as good as what you are making me hungry for
chew a fingernail
eww
er. I've got a bit of an issue with installing artwiz-cursor:
Leaving `diversion of /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/cursor.pcf.gz to /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz by artwiz-cursor'
there's no telling what's under there
update-alternatives: Cannot find alternative `/etc/X11/cursors/core.theme'.
I got pop tarts.. but hell thats just gonna piss my stomach off
as a result it's stuck in a state between installed and not installed; I can't remove it and undo its changes and apt-get keeps showing it up as though it needs to be processd still whenever I do something else.
the packaging seems buggered. file a bug if there isn't one for that already
is there an option with cp to show a % complete or something so I'm not just sitting here wondering how far its gotten?
things like pop-tarts just make me more hungry
edit the postinst or {pre,post}rm
-v, or use rsync
i dunno how you guys eat that crap
could use rsync instead if you want progress displays
where would I find these? in the .deb?
nor me.
/var/lib/dpkg/info/package.{pre,post}{inst,rm}
thanks.
it's not there as it's not yet installed; heh.
it should be
they get installed when the deb gets unpacked
if it's unpacked, it is, just install it again
well; appearantly this one's stubburn. perhaps it didn't manage to get that far yet.
if it hist –unpack it's gonna be iffy, if it hits –configure they'll be there
have a better look, its those files that actually run things like alternatives
hits*
( can't "install it again", http://www.lhunath.lyndir.com/stuff/debian )
like early into the installation it gets killed say, it won't be. a bit past –unpack chances are good they'll be there… man a spend too much time watching shit install…..
Is there a good howto on setting up a software raid box?
tldp.org raid howto, the second version
well; I think I would see it if it were there. anything I have installed is there, but nothing art*
the first version is dead
maybe they removed the first version too ;p
i haven't been there in 2 years i think
nothing at /var/lib/dpkg/info/artwiz-cursor* ?
any cursor* files?
more like *cursor*
ya, anything with cursor
/var/lib/dpkg/info/industrial-cursor-theme.*
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libxcursor1.*
damn. wtf
you dpkg -i the deb again?
I apt-get installed it again, see the link I gave above for the result. should dpkg -i make a difference?
no it'd run the install again without having to go through apt (for the most part; you wouldn't have apt in the way, and you're just dealing with dpkg)
i dont see how it doesnt have the preinst in there
i know
that's really bugging me
how many sata disks does a typical motherboard support?
well I threw together two eggs on italian bread anyhow
it's 2 channels i think like regular ide
it has just been confirmed, it will make a turd..
hehhe
depends on the motherboard
at least 2
well; same deal with dpkg -i, nothing apt-related.
w. t. f.
if I made a raid server I'd want at least 4 drives in the raid array.
many come with 4
put your ls results for that dir on a pastebot
and you can get pci cards etc
ok, tell you what, let's do it this way.
sudo strace dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/artwiz-cursor_1%3a1.3-6_all.deb 2&1 | grep preinst
stat64("/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/preinst", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0755, st_size=582, …}) = 0
perfect. then one ide drive for the OS and such.
meh
ok, does that file still exist?
http://www.lhunath.lyndir.com/stuff/debian ls -al on that dir.
nope.
find yourself a tmp dir, extract the deb's control tarball, ar p thefile.deb control.tar.gz | tar xz -
zx rather
you trying to remove this package, right?
you do realize that apt has super cow powers right?
yup
crap afk
the whole "apt in the way" thing sounded a bit condescending
so has anyone here created a raid server? how many disks did you use.. any hot spares?
no, just trying to eliminate a layer that's all
I have 4 500G disks in raid 5
*.debs are tar archives?
I'm thinking about adding another
two tar.gz within an ar
nope they're ar archives
no, they're ar archives, that has 1 text file and 2 tarballs
so you have 1.5T of space? Do you have a spare in there ready to be used in the case of a failure?
oh, ar; thought you had mistyped tar.
the control.tar.gz has the postint and other management stuff in it
har.

it's mostly just for mythtv
I don't have any "/etc/X11/cursors/core.theme"
there's only about 2gig of important stuff on it
gotcha.. is it your backend?
try touching it
yep
$ apt-file search core.theme
xcursor-themes: etc/X11/cursors/core.theme
maybe I should just install that
yeh
sounds like you are explaining sex to a retard
"trying to remove layers", now "try touching it"
heay
Hi all
hehehe
and the bit about the backend
I have too many damn boxes I wanna build.. wanna create a mythtv box… and a raid server box.
yeah, works now; I blame the set -e in that preinst for breaking stuff.
and the file should depend on xcursor-themes
bugfiling is mandatory, citizen.
s/file/package/
you run a web or mail server or anything like that on it?
I suppose
Debiankind thanks you for your thoroughness.
nope there are other systems for that
and WHY on earth would yhou need that much space for a webserver.
?
how many boxes do you have?
ummm.. counting workstations/desktops?
servers
2
3
mytbackend.. + internet mail/web server
Sorry thaught thats a count game
your db on the mythbackend or the other server?
for myth on the backend
Hello, I try to replace debian's livecd kernel from 2.6.18 to 2.6.22, but after that, sata harddisk can not recongnized.
there's also a seperate frontend
nod..
is the frontend diskless?
debian livecd isn't supported here.
and a workstation for my wife and a laptop for me and a wireless gateway..
ooh 3 servers
Guerin, so, where shall i ask this question?
the community wireless box is a "server"
dunno. #debian on irc.oftc.net might know.
I REALLY wanna set up a mythtv box.. I got comcast digital cable and a DVR last month and while it's cool, the extra $40/month it costs is just insane.
my frontend is not diskless
it's an old p3 system
hrm
oops p4 3Ghz
I think it would be cool to have a diskless frontend.
I concur
having a disk isn't that big a deal
main thing is that it needs to be quieter than the projector
nevyn, lol old
I've heard that mythtv is requires constant tinkering.. is that true?
meh it does the job
it takes some significant tinkering to get things how you want
you got a nice htpc case?
so does a $2 hooker but doesnt mean she won't give you herpes
and occasionally the developers break something
not yet.. it's on the list
well, I'd think once you got things working you wouldn't take any updates unless they were compelling.
new features are compelling
better ad skipping mame support
depends on what the features are.. haha
dvd playback
!sns syndrome
it has been said that sns syndrome is a serious disorder otherwise known as Shiny New Software Syndrome usually breaks out into an epidemic every time something new is released. Slashdot readers are more likely than others to contract the condition.
yeah I have that pretty bad
dpkg, sns syndrome =~ s/Software/Shit/
OK, Guerin
I have that when it comes to Quicken for some reason. haha
hence unstable/experimiental
you run your mthy box with unstable?
quicken fix tax stuff in new releases
yep
WOW.. no wonder
what about your other server?
I woudln't dream of running a server on anything but stable.
sarge wasn't even close to cutting it for media
web server is freebsd 4.x
How do I see which program is using a module?
the internet facing stuff is quite stable
lsmod
the module would connect to a device node to be accessed by a program
I should do some pricing and see how much it would cost to build a myth frontend and a raid backend.
lsof or fuser can tell you what is using a device node
for a raid settup I'd think the most expensive part would be the disks.
you can get like 500GB Sata drives for like $110 right now
if you want a LOT of spindles
you end up spending more per disk slot on the enclosure than on the disks
once you pass about 8 disks
probably 6 drives.. 4 for the raid, 1 spare and 1 for the OS
oh and something to plug them into
buy small os disk
and mirror them
(you could even use pata for this)
get a motherboard with lots of sata ports
that's an idea.. 2 40GB disks would be MORE than enough.
right
is there a tool to browse all available packages graphically without having them already installed ?
raid server need lots of memory?
synaptic
thats what bill gates said about 64k ram
and be able to know them by cathegory !
who's laughing now?!
if you're worried about performance the more ram the better
aptitude is your friend
Bill Gates never said that.
but what are you trying to achieve here
yes but aptiude is not graphical !!
just a centralized place for file storage.
Including media
yes
myth can get io heavy particularly if you have multiple highdef streams
for now I'd have 0 high def streams.
but my system copes perfectly fine with 3 standard def channesl
how much memory do you have?
2gig
what cpu?
core 2
it was a little more than the amd but it's been a world less suffering
you have the disks setup for easy access? Or do you have to open your case?
I have a chenbro hotswap cage
Nice!
but I didn't have to pay for it or I wouldn't have one.
it uses ncurses
you can run it from the command line or use the ui
thanks
there's synaptic, but its functionality is rather lacking
hello everybody
why sshd is not installed by default on etch ?
hot swap cages seem like a good idea for a raid setup.
because not everyone needs it
don't see any cages on chenbro's website.
so the package is openssh -server isn't it ?
http://www.chenbro.com/corporatesite/products_detail.php?serno=78
thanks.
so you wouldn't bother with hot swap cages if you didn't get them for free?
is your raid server a rack mount?
hey guys, is an englishman here, who can do me a favour at an off-topic please?
no
bimmel, im in the uk
I'd get a case withhotswap bays
but I wouldn't buy the adapter
night all
hm.. what's the adapter?
can you write down the speech of this video for me, my english is too bad to understand him talking http://www.dirty-pages.de/new-world-disorder-8-teaser/
the thingy to plug onto the drive, that inserts into the cage
the thing I just showed you
bimmel, no sound sorry - at work
well yeah but that's not what I ment
sigh
ah
oh okay, but thanks a lot for your offered help
no problem
Can anyone help me out with this compilation problem? http://paste.debian.net/34511
heloo there
is there a way to connect on a debian maschine if this maschine has no opensshserver installed, but I know user, root passwd?
telnet?
I didn't install telnet during installation..
walk?
sneakernet time
bad Dark_Apostrophe
ftp and add ssh to cron!
hi all
What?
suggesting telnet
Well I don't know any alternatives
ssh and telnet
telnet is very bad
!telnet
i heard telnet is an old protocol for remotely logging in to another computer. It is one of the basic utilities for TCP/IP. It is very insecure as it sends all traffic in plaintext! Seriously consider using ssh instead. see telnet-ssl, this one has encryption and certificates support (but
that's useless without a remote telnetd-ssl except to play and telnet to an https web server)
I know, I know
who makes cases with hotswap bays?
But it's better than nothing, if available
you tend to buy a hotswap bay seperately
nor telnet or ssh, I forgot… and now I really need to connect to thsi maschine..
##hardware best place to ask
nope
but anyway
hometime
Can't help ya then, sorry
thanks for the info.
are the debian alsa packages not to your liking?
hey the mill
arh someone knows how to do it.. I mean how the hackers works..
a default install as no open services.
They don't work for my soung card
see bug 3104 in alsa's bugtracker
So can anyone please help me compile it?
try apt-get install libalsaplayer-dev
It doesn't work
I've tried all debian alternatives
Hmmm…
_ONLY_ ALSA cvs works
*mercurial
See bug 3104
are you able to cherrypick that patch and bring it in to the debian alsa package?
ok
No idea
But in order to build a package, I'd still have to be able to compile it
it's easier for us if you give a url for a bug rather than us having to find their bug system first… https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3104
I didn't have the url at hand, sorry
I just remembered the bug number
the debian alsa-source package is already set up to compile under debian, that's all I'm thinking. If you're having to do things the hard way, then even picking up the debian alsa-source package and then dropping the cvs head into it to do the compilation would be possible…
or ask about this config file in #alsa. It sounds like the sort of thing that some sort of autotool should be making.
I've been in #alsa since last night, no reply
apt-get install libasound2-dev
It's already installed, px49
that's odd… normally the guys in #alsa are really helpful
Join and see for yourself
i need cheat codes to debian
Maybe they're asleep/at work/something
i need cracks or warez to debian, anyone have?
that happens occasionally. about 1500-2000 UTC is usually a good time for them, IIRC.
Debian is free software, both in the freedom and the price sense
You do not need any cracks or anything
:P

What are the advantages of using Debian core over Ubuntu?
it works?
'Debian core'?
as opposed to anything "based on"
I mean, Debian is the core of all other debian-based distros
So why use it when I can use more feature-enhanced distors
hmm… the alsa pages don't actually say to run ./configure except with –help, which doesn't seem right. But I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/AlsaCVS

expect more people with nosuid mounted /
ugh
is it even in debian still? must be
anyway, it would be best to find out what exactly messed with your mount options and sudo permissions, so it does not happen again
yes, my fault, i had cut & paste of knoppix fstab (but it was for normal mount with noauto, exec options). Now, i set to defaults, nodev
and now works

does your irc client not highlight lines with your nick in it? that helps a lot in channel. But I'm pretty much out of ideas at present… I'm just googling around too. If you still don't get anywhere with any of the ideas we've been throwing around, then either ask again in a few hours when
different ppl are around or try again in #alsa or try an alsa mailing list.
