Archive for Unix HELP

I have USB keyboard after some time without working on PC my keyboard doesnt work I have unplug my USB and plugged

my Generic 104-key PC (US English) keyboard serves what I need to do

mesof, that the ISP block the 995 port

speaking like a champion

it happened to me, i never thought it would be true, and it sounds weird, but it happened we first got dsl

champion of what?

did you have it working before with your current isp?

mesof, yes

champion of using the simple for what is necessary rather than the extreme

mesof, it works fine in my laptop i think

okay then i'd forget about the isp problem then
check over configurations

the difference between using compiz vs. a simple window manager

mesof, I have not modify anything

how unconvenient, I need to type in U then the numbers…

i would just check the configuration over

hello

very unconvenient

is the laptop running the same software?

mesof, maybe my internet connection is too slow?
mesof, yes debian lenny

it's not that

gonzaloaf have you done a straight ping test

i mean i doubt it

yigal, ping who?

i doubt that to be the problem

perhaps google ?
debian

yes, google

no compose needer either, my Ctrls are safe

try google

needed*

yigal, mesof , google responds the ping

good the question is how fast

yigal, very slow

ah, sorry to hear that

yigal, 180ms average

are you downloading a lot?

mesof, nop

Can anyone tell me how I can install unison-gtk without unison?

that is slow but not that slow, what type of connection do you have?

maybe try calling gmail?
are you a paying customer?

mesof, nop

than your only option left is to continue searching

yigal, mesof , when I ping gmail it takes 250ms average to answer

bah, documentation bug

hay i got opera instazlled, How can i tell where hte Plugin directory is ???

DavidProck1981, i'm just guessing, but maybe something like ~/.opera/ ?

or rather software bug, man interfaces actually says how pre-up should behave

I think you can configure the directories where it looks for plugins somewhere in opera

where do apps get installed at, thier data dir
ok

ask the opera guys

it may be another application interfering

opera is nt shipped with debian becuase it's closed source - but if you';ve installed the .deb, dpkg -L will help you

did you try closing the other apps?

mesof, yes

does it download some messages?

oh cool thanks

mesof, with netstat I dont see any connection established in port 995

mmm, black hart stout is definately an improvement to mackeson stout

/usr/lib/opera/plugins

mesof, I have another gmail account I it receives messages normally;

i'm not sure really

does anyone know how to use vim to edit wordpress blogs using vim using vimpress or any other method for that matter?

you'll probably want to use something like itsalltext or similar.

d
is that a text editor?

no, it's a firefox plugin

try copying that exact configuration

it looks like the Debian installer makes the default partition table format "msdos"? Is this widely done/

there is really no point in using that type of environment to type my blogs

and also do not use both at the same time

mesof, I did that

i am very comfortable with vim, and people have made "broken" scripts that do 1/2 the job i am simply trying to see if anyone has hacked on them

well if you use w3m it can call vim as the external editor

but thank you
interesting idea

the point is that you just click a button and any text area can be edited in vim or emacs or nano or jed or whatever you prefer.

yes, yes that is why it is interesting
i will look into it, i forgot my pasword and screen can only have so many terminals in it at once

yeah, that number is about 128
hm, might be more, even

hmm what is my phone number..

1-900-h0ts3×0r

if I have a router that doesn't do DDNS, can I setup a Linux server to do it? How would the server know when the external IP on the router has changed?

heh

lol, its good stuff

yes, use ddclient

why use a router? Just set a linux box up on the perimeter hand have it route packets.

you mean… a router

yes, but not a tacky little blackbox with a broken web UI

cause my router rght now has it built-in and I don't know how to do it on Linux.

whatever tickles your fanny

how does the client know when the router's external buy dedicated ip has changed?

the client doesn't care, but you can find out the information

one of those linux boxen inside a tiny little case would be nice

a little dream come true
dwm

low power consumption for one thing
nice little freescale or arm thingy

I wonder why the scroll part of this touchpad doesn't work on synergy clients..

yes, yes you remind me of the asus 200 dream machine laptop
s/200/$200

gumstix or something. Yeah. My p3 burns way too much power for something which just routes packets.

not very synergistic then is it? ;P

if I try to scroll with it, it shows the little scroll cursor in the center of the server, but doesnt scroll on the clients

probably pay for itself over the course of a year

something like

not at all. if I plug in a usb mouse the scrolling works on clients
which is why its puzzling me.. a scroll should be a scroll no matter what

solar power?

something about the way the driver software is for the touchpad in windows must be fucked up

no just power savings
any surprise?

currently takes at least a decade to pay for itself. Peak oil might bring that down.

no, I guess not
I haven't really been looking for bugs, but I'
ve found a ton

the good old turning point of a non-renewable resource

wow, i'm starting to see 'peak oil' being used more often

MSIE7 seems to have all kinds of stupid little focus and select issues

2006 was the year environmentalism went mainstream
though it'll be another 10 before it's more than a collection of good intentions and buzzwords

yeh. a lot too late for my taste

i was celebrating earth in 1978 and i was born in 79

om.

people were bitching about this 30-40 years ago, and no one listened

no one ever listens when people are bitching

its the end of the earth - no worries - both the aztecs and maya agree in 2012

if you're clever you'll bitch without anyone knowing thats what you're doing

eventually they do

Moin!

*bzzt* wrong
heheh for sure

yes ?

2014

eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we … have to go to work

a maya elder told me that

5 beers later i ponder what you say

except for nvz, cause he doesn't work unless he feels like it

my bossen want to give me a management job

… like I'm doing right now

well there you go ;-) its just peoplo connecting to your port 993 and disconnecting without going-through with SSL properly then ;-)

the discrepancy is due to inaccuracies of the gregorian calendar

i'm sorry to hear

my condolences

how so, please explicate

nah, it's great. Less work, more money, and minions to do my bidding.

well then, thats good

working on invoice #1414 dont ask me were #1408, #1409, or #1410 #1412, #1413 went, or what happened to any numbers before #1407 cause I just make this shit up as I go along

but it might interfere with my research, so I'm not sure I'll take it

hehehe

you talking about the Connection reset by peer? It's some problem with my router.. if I setup my mail client to go through my local ip to the mail server I don't see it.. if I go through the internet to get to my mail tomcat server hosting I
see it.. it happens at about 10 minute intervals.

heh. I decided I need to charge an extra $100 on #1414 because they made me go to a computer store with two women last week

does your router have an internal firewall ?

hah.. i see

I had to be a bit more creative on the description though

hrrm accessing internal-service via external-address can be problematic

not sure

because what you are talking about seems to me is that certain ports are being blocked for whatever reason

i haven't studied this, i just know what they said to me. has to do with solar times, lunar times, and how each count them. the maya calendar is more accurate at doing the counting

yeah.. trying to figure out a better setup for my laptop to acess via internal ip when connected locally and external when on the public network.

it rquires an SNAT rule as well as the DNAT rule, if the client and server are on the same subne.

need water

The ports are seen from the outside.. that's not the issue.

all i know about the mayan calendar is that it is 2. one is 365 days and the other is 260 days, approximately 9 lunar months == fertility but thats about it

seriously though.. I had just eaten a HUGE lunch.. I am sitting on my couch stuffed staring blankly at the tv not planning on moving for an hour or two.. and I get a call that the secretary ruined her PC.. had to not only go get her a new one and set it up, but then had to debtakeover the
Win2k server to get shit running again, cause I don't do win2k and wasn't about to try figure out what that thing's purpose was

my router is a Linksys WRT54G.. don't have that much control over it.

if its a WRT54G then you can install replacement like DD-WRT on it, I think -)

have you at least installed DD-WRT or OpenWrt ?

if it was a normal on my time thing I would just include this on the normal weekly charges, but they made me get up off my ass on their schedule to go shopping with two women when I was hung over and stuffed to the point I could barely move
that's gonna cost ya.. heh

enyc wrt54g is actually one of the lower end models these days, for linux support

no.. it's not officially supported. I'm currently looking for a new router that will fulfill my needs.

your story sounds rather unnatural

hah.. what's unnatural about it?

it's actually pretty complex. the respective colonial governments for a long time repressed the keepers, and also for a longer time it wasn't explained to outsiders, for traditional reasons. it's only recently through various dreams and visions that they were told to share it with the
world.

found one router that has all the features I'd like.. but don't really want to spend $200 on a router.

I have USB keyboard, after some time without working on PC, my keyboard doesnt work, I have unplug my USB and plugged again but still its not running. Whats problem there?

Kevin`: are you using the router for personal or other purposes?

anyway, getting way OT now

yigal personal

Kevin`: DD-WRT is supported

I don't like dd-wrt
it's messy

Kevin`: fare
Kevin`: its better firmware than what it comes with, but to each there own

holy smokes man

yigal I rather like openwrt. clean system and it works on a bunch of types of hardware now

Kevin`: there's a few firmwares around, some better than others

this is how I do business.. I make myself available 24-7 and I charge whatever the hell I want generally speaking, if you want me to come out on call I'm charging for the call, and by the hour. if I did that I'd be charging $160 at the least… but I'm not that hard up for money and this is
comming out of the tax payers pocket.. so I don't charge much.. $75/wk but thats for maintaining the webserver.. what i did last week was way above and be

i heard good things about that one

Kevin`: i am just talking about the hardware you have

really the most work I do is inventing invoices.. I put more thought into making up numbers and descriptions for invoices than I do working most of the time

like the maori people of australia and their dream world

yigal here, I have an isp provided modem, an pentium 4 tower as main router, several access points (running openwrt, small atheros SOC devices), and some other things i'm playing with, some dumb devices like hubs

er what?

Anyone run across a database for Routers that lets you search for routers with a specific feature set?

na.. I know you could build your own though

2 different continents there, and and the english for it is dreamtime

simonrvn "it's only recently through various dreams and visions that they were told to share it with the world."

maori are from "new zealand"

JeffH toh.openwrt.org for consumer routers, covers a lot. if you want linux of course.

hardware routers are nice cause they are low-power and easy to implement.. but they always seem to have bugs and the firmware is always seriously out of date

both

australia it's aborigine
ffs i know what i'm talking about

nvz which is why you get a "hardware" router or embedded board and put something else on it

Kevin`: thanks.. I actually like the idea of getting a router with linux hosting inside.

Kevin`: yeah I guess.

anyway, getting way OT now

its true that Ninety-nine percent of Maori are born in new zealand but com on there is that 1 pecent born in Australia
simonrvn:

though that list doesn't really gve me what I was hoping for.. ooh well.

I'm still not sure what kinda hardware I'm going to get yet.. I'm getting a better idea of what I want to do, but still haven't translated that into what to buy yet

please go and electrocure yourself now.

thank you an honorable way out

I want to be able to spread a wireless signal pretty much across down
er town even

that should have been electrocuTe, but electrocure would have the same meaning, given sufficient current
that should have been electrocuTe, but electrocure would have the same meaning, given sufficient current

nvz one thing i've found seriously annoying, is the lack of a middle-end device with a vlan capable switch. it's available on the cheap routers if you hack them, and it's available standalone for like $300, nothing in between

jerky response you give

Kevin`: hmm.

in reply to an ignorant one

hmm?

in reply to an ignorant one

nvz the cheap host routers would normally be ok of course, but they are usually only 5 ports (6 with the router itself), and 100mbit

moronitude begets jerkiness.

moronitude heh

we should eat the dumb, an intersting idea Guerin

mmm, jerky

Kevin`: yeah.. I'm challenged with designing the technical infrastructure of our new borough building.. so I', all kinds of lost.. I haven't really bought this kinda stuff before.. its fairly new to me

in your case, that would be painful

eating you would hurt but not that much

I want to at the least be able to give limited access to our internet from the borough garage across down.. its about 0.66mi away from the new building. it would be nice for the police and other borough workers to get access to the network from virtually anywhere in town.. its only a 1.2sq mile
town.. shouldn't be that hard

nvz ubiquiti (sp) makes rather nice wireless cards

i'm wating for the come back

we need everyone connected cause right now the only way to email the street dept manager is at home. he has no internet at the garage. and it would cost more I think to get internet access at different buildings than to just share the connection wirelessly in a small town like
this

nvz and, of course, use a good antenna with it

?

Guerin:

would you like an ota sandwich?

Kevin`: well the new building is going to be at a higher elevation than much of the rest of the town.. the sooner I can decide the better.. I can have the damn construction guys put a big antenna on the roof now.. they are just now finishing up with the trusses

nvz you might have trouble accessing a central access point like that directly from something like a laptop. might want to consider repeaters for the major areas and buildings

i think i would go hungry on that diet

Kevin`: yeah thats what I had in mind. repeaters across town strategically placed forming a nice mesh network

nvz I use "repeater" in a generic sense
(proper mesh is nice)

Kevin`: its already a digital school district.. the high school and most homes with students already have wifi

i visited new zealand when i was 8 very interesting stuff, what is your relation with the maya?

i have friends who are

Kevin`: but I want to extend the same connectivity to borough employees, Police, Fire, Street Dept, council..etc

good friends, considered family

nvz would you be able to use one of the municipal-reserved bands that don't interfere with consumer wifi?

hello all

no, you'd get sick i think (ota sandwich)

Kevin`: idk. I can get away with just about anything around here.. I'm running the show.. heh

hi ,does anyone have gimp installed ?

its good to whose boss

well, compatible equiptment would obviously be easier if you didn't. plus messing with licensing

Kevin`: I was looking at these things.. forget what they were called em.. but its something the military uses to create mesh networks.. seemed a bit excessive for what I am doing though

why are you taking a poll? It's best to just come out and ask your question

yeah well I'm not the boss, I just act like it and never let em see me sweat

nvz oh? what's that, doesn't sound like something i'm familiar with

hi thedonvaughn ok

mesh wireless network

simonrvn I mean whatever tech the military uses

Hey
How would I install english on a debian system?

Would anyone please whatever tool to help me edit a pic for me please ? i would make it smaller and add a site url into it that is all.Thanks.

I'm stuck with german at this point (someone elses install taht I've taken over)

dpkg-reconfigure locales

Kevin`: ah, its called a breadcrumb

its only 2 pounds of carbon fiber i would still be hungry

scale …

aptitude install gimp-doc

Thanks. /me is glad he figured out where - is on that machine

select text tool click in pic, start typing

Kevin`: linux based I guess its like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs.. heh.. something designed for military application
Kevin`: http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT9034569280.html

i like Guerin's approach more

seems way overkill for this application

sorry,i do not have linux right now,but i have it installed on my server.

nvz I don't have a web browser

my server is put on the data-center.

nvz it Sounds like something designed for quick deployment and temporary use?

Now, the qwerty keymap

ooh the data center

Is it a package I need to install?

you don't have a web browser? hah.. thats funny

(It is currently qwertz it seems)

nvz well, I could start one, but i'd have to go into X or something

Kevin`: w3m
links{2}, lynx, etc.

fine fine i'll use a text browser and look at it

Kevin`: yeah they are self configuring mobile mesh units.. come in various shapes and sizes. some are like cell-phone sized that actual foot soldiers could carry just to tap in, and other are larger suitcase versions that are capable of backhauling and such

Kevin`: w3m is a better browser than firefox for everything other than videos, music and pictures

Kevin`: links2, w3m, lynx, wget :P

pictures too. you don't have w3m-img installed

like I said though this is a 1.2sq mile town located along the ohio river in a small valley, should not be hard to get decent coverage across this town

nvz you don't really need/want self configuring battery powered units though, do you, you want permanent units

i should install it, i was using firefox for everything, but it is really slow

Debian package search found nothing based on "qwerty", but loadkeys qwerty can't find the map

Kevin` right..
Kevin`: I don't need mobility

how much of a security risk is it to allow wireless clients access to my router configuration pages?

JeffH very high, if they can change settings

BTW, 'ota' is shit in Mohawk. has nothing to do with carbon fibre.

althjough it is carbon-based, and hopefully contains plenty of dietary fibre

I would assume it would still be restricted to people on the local network.

Kevin`: as of right now we got a tower on each end of town for the old fire siren.. we may be going to a sirenless setup soon. but those towers are probably already perfectly placed for this application

hehehehe

ah, i thought you were refering to carbon fiber sandwich core struts, haha

sounds good to me. ohio valley?

yep

JeffH at the most evil level, I could upload a new router firmware that looked exactly like yours but created a second hidden virtual access point that allowed me to do anything on the lan or wan network, and to monitor all trafficl.

very nice… i've down by there, some little acreage that's been set up as a nature preserve. just beautiful

Ok, it's loadkeys us

i've been*

shit thats funny

but to do that I would expect that you'd have to be on my network to do that.. I doubt they give access to the configuration website on the external ip.

Now, last question. How do I set those two (locale and keymap) to be automatic (for all logins, and even after reboots)?

JeffH what if I live a few houses down from you, and am an unscrupilous kiddie who knows how to use a computer

dpkg-reconfigure console-data and locales

console-data is the keymaps?

IIRC yeh

it generates the keymaps

also sets it, no?
or did they move it (again)

Kevin`: that's why I have a password setup on my wireless setup.

yeah,

right now the mark to the left (north) is the existing borough building where one tower is, and the other is the railroad crossing which we will be closing soon as the overpass is nearly complete.. and there is another siren tower there. they stand about two stories high

Thanks

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1223290

ubuntu is weird like that

Rebooting, I'll find out soon

i hate how they do locales

uh

JeffH password for configuring the router, or password for accessing the wireless at all

yeah yeah
i'm just saying

ubuntu's locales are annoying. they're pre-built or something

it's weird and totally nondebian
ya

Kevin`: for accessng the wireless at all.

i never got a handle on it

JeffH using what method?

oh man, nice breeze coming in with flowers on it.

wep2 I believe.

no such thing as wep2

JeffH so weak

smelled like black birch

you mean wpa2 ?

i have another xp hd paperweight

er black ash rather

I'd have to go check. something like that.

JeffH if you mean wpa2, it CAN be cracked, but takes about as long as any other password cracking by brute force, unless some method has come up that's new to me

if its worth anything at all its wpa2

JeffH the cracking is offline though

which is why i'm still wired

I use wireless with 40bit wep

Kevin`: waiting to be destroyed by the kid next door

there isn't one
but, all of my devices are configured by ssh only

Kevin`:

did you wire your whole house?

no, building's too old

and there ARE nearby houses with open access

basically this is our 1.2sq mile town I've drawn a box around http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1223298

and i don't have a house anyway

i'm thinking of switching to 802.1x or wpa-enterprise soon, actually
I don't think there are any cracks for either

Kevin`: cracks, no. A determinted intruder can still get in
script kiddies can't

do i have to open a javascript capable browser for this?
"Click here to return to the main window when printing is complete"

any idea why my router seems to be killing my imap connection at 10 minute intervals?

wingot i'm not a business with valuable data to steal or something
wingot nobody would be that determined

Kevin`: Yeah, exactly

probably.

They will go for the easier targets

saturated? some tcp settings are off?

i'm probably going to set that up shortly before I move (which I am soon), since when I do there will be lots of people with wifi near me
right now i'm the only wireless I see
if I left it wide open nobody would use it

I doubt its saturated.. I'm the only one using the port. Didn't see any tcp settngs that would control something like that in my router.. my router is quite old.

(to be fair, if I go on the roof with a directional antenna, I see other networks)

neat. outside of pittsburgh too. must be nice and quiet

good night peoples

is this a linuxed wrt54g?
Kevin`: g'night

sorry to go back to your router, but if its old enough linux can be thrown on the WT54g

yeah its pretty quiet. We've got a new borough building and an overpass nearing completion this fall.. and I'm also running for council and taking charge of all the technology :P

the place i was at was in ohio itself, south part
hehe cool

Kevin`: gnight

no, wish it were.

i would consider it if it's an old enough revision

its a v5.. which is vxWorks based.. and not 'offically supported'

my dad maintains the website.. updates it daily with pictures of progress around town. http://www.leetsdaleboro.net/ he hasn't moved to my server yet.. only the garden club site is on my server so far I'm going to a meeting tomorrow to talk to the fire
dept about their website.. I'll be providing the hosting and the domain name, they just need to work out the protocol of how the design will go and how everyone will get input on the

it's a v5.. so I guess not OLD.. but just doesn't seem to be very feature rich.

I'm planning on forming my own website and organization.. I've been talking about it for a long time now.. want to make a Linux Users Group.. LEETLUG

IIRC you're SOL, but don't take my word for it
cool man. neat name for the LUG

hence why I'm shopping for a new router.. trying to find one with all the options I'd prefer.

yeah well you can thank Daniel Leet for that one.. he founded this town

heh

:P
I'm just trying to make sure it progresses.. cause he's dead now

speaking of which.. if I upgrade to a gigE router am I going to have a difficult time finding a gigE PCI network card that will work on a P3?
with linux that s.
is.

yeh
dunno

if i do an "lsof -i" i see multiple ports from my machine being connected to google.com from firefox-bin(iceweasel). Why is this ?

cause you have multiple sessionss ??

probably some google thing you installed

not much point in upgrading my router to gigE if my server host is gonna stay at 100MB

multiple tabs, single window.

yep. pastebin your lsof -i

i take care that I have no google stuff installed.. except the default(?) toolbar which comes with iceweasel.

you should see this crap we paid some company to come up with.. it looks awesome the ideas they have for adding buffers to soften the appearance riding through town, and the parks..etc.. none of it will ever happen, but the ideas they submitted were incredible. The whole point was to should
in a perfect world what we could do.. so we can get funding.. but most the ideas they have we just can't do don't own the property..etc

pastebin your "lsof -i " result

noise buffers? or asethetic ones?

1524-80.67.87.46:www
multiple lines looking like above.

well if you looked at the satellite photo.. most the town is industrial.. you can see it comming down the highway.. they would put trees and bushes and such along the highway so all you see is scenery not railroads and shit

i want to see the other ports !

yeh i noticed. that would be cool. would also help air quality. i imagine pittsburgh being so close the air quality isn't great in hot weather

see the user column, is it thirst in all lines ?

the idea I liked the best host was turning this old bridge we got over the highway and railroad into a foot bridge with benches and trees and using it to connect the small residential community on that side of the tracks by the
industrial park with the rest of the residential area

oh nice

we are tree city USA.. heh.. we got signs as you ride into town.. we got plenty of trees in this town despite the size of our two industrial parks

more doesn't hurt

well looks like the google search engine box is the culprit.. i removed that .. and closed all google tabs and the connections are gone for now..

we got ordinances to protect the trees.. you're not allowed to cut one down without planting one

but yeh, so it's probably pretty good then

we actually had a ceremony this year and were handing out baby trees to people in the park

now it makes me wonder.. why would there be an established connection from google at all times .. hmm… i think it is time to make some good iceweasel patches..

shit man, i wish it was like that everywhere, even plant 2 trees

that is one thing I missed in Texas.. all the damn trees

probably because by default it makes connections a google server farm to check for phishing sites

http://www.fr.debian.org/security/2007/dsa-1346

I'm accustomed to a lot of shade.. heh

hehe

we have trees

well.. it shudnt do that unless i asked it to.. i dont want google peering over my shoulder when i browse..

where were you, west texas?

I was right on Lake Dallas.
Lakebridge Estates

east texas is wetter innit it?

I could see the lake from my bedroom window

anyone here use a gigabit ethernet card in Linux?

no
i can't afford that shit ;p

lots of springs and pine trees
red clay dirt

oh like georgia

(east texas)
not sure
i could ask my sister
she lives in georgia somewhere

I think I have one on my motherboard, but I'm not sure about that and my router is 100M anyways

my wife is from there, she told me that

sorry, JeffH

thanks muep.. seems like it's pointless to get a gigabit router at this point..

mine is too, the bmac and a 53c89x card (IIRC)

this isn't the best way to see this stuff.. they are images.. fairly big.. but its what I got.. heh
http://67.171.94.112/JT%20Sauer%20&%20Associates/
this is the good hosting company with affordable prices we had draw up ideas

d.0 Ethernet controller: Accton Technology Corporation EN-1216 Ethernet Adapter (rev

the buffer and buffer2 images show what it looks like comming down the highway, and what it could look like with a visual buffer

uh
what is the limit, like what's the top d/l speed i can achieve with a 100 nic … would that translate to 1024 down or so?

the oliver.jpg is one of my favorites.. thats realistic.. we could actually make that happen.. in the near future

am i being limited by my nic?
and not my dsl provider?
err cable

yeh that's cool

as I understand it the provider is the bottleneck right now.

the isp would be yeh
barring a packet storm or whatever

no i mean me

LAN?

100MBit is a functional limit somewhere around 7 megabytes per second

oh ok thanks dude

you might get bursts higher than that, but not for long

i'm not htere yet

when I was on 100MBit in Korea I clocked a download at 7,260k/s

simonrvn connection from firefox-bin to google persists even after I close my google.com tab, which shouldnt. Dont you think that is a security hole that can be exploited.

that's the fastest I've seen over a WAN connection

this persists until i restart firefox

you should ask #firefox on irc.mozilla.org

maybe

ok

i recommand you to upgrade your iceweal packages

damn.

*jawdrop*

that's what I said when I had to move back here.

I was amazed to see like 700kb/s to maybe 1200kb/s at one point at my friend's house the other night..

on the uni pipe i don't see faster than 1 MB/s

I'm lucky to get around 500kb/s from a good fast server like kernel.org or ftp.debian.org or something

100GB per day outbound for almost a year

we are on the same node, same ISP.. but he only has one box on his

that's what you get when you run a bittorrent distro site

I've got like 6

can I do that while debian boots in not GUI mode, I can set some background and give some space to so that all booting process in to some area, means I can specify my name or image while booting

what?

wth?

yes
you can

i ghave the sameproblem

yeah my brother does a lot of torrent crap IB and OB I stress to him often about throttling.. bittorrent can just kill a connection.. its just so damn effecient at moving data

look into grub splash images, usplash, framebuffers, others
!search

to find factoids containing thing. see http://wiki.debian.org/WhereIsIt

even if i close the iceweasel window

another attempt by the evil empire to track the users..

i still have the google conected
;-)

got google toolbar?

i deleted a google foolbar today
and a yahoo

i think hat this is due to the iceweasel process

and other carp
hey i like that
carp

mm, carp

it isn't terminated when the window is closed !!

google to yahoo is like IE4Linux to firefox, use it only when you really cant do without it

an ESTABLISHED connection will presist until either end closes it

sure

persist*

wasn't my box

why ??

i think we shud put in a patch to iceweasel to close it.. as remote end is not going to close it anyway

if the browser is closed, it's not going to do fuck all ;p

;p

why are you telling us?

sorry.. plz ignore..

if you think it's a security problem, file a bug
(and prepare to be flamed if you're wrong

lemme confirm it before I report.

wise.

well I'm gonna walk my ass down and print this invoice.. as usual I setup security so anal I can't do it from here.

heh

actually I probably could do it from here come to think of it
I just don't wanna think that hard
the printer is running on cups, so it should be possible if I scp the file.. but I don't offhand know how to print an XLS from commandline anyhow
its only half a block away :P

FYI, it's just a simple littl RST packet to close it
you !lazy bum ;p

yes

!lazy

Well, we don't service lazy people, sorry.

;-)

I have hdb1, hdb2 and hdb3.. can I repartition to hdb1 and hdb2 without losing data on hdb1?

you're changing the partition size. yes
er, no rather

even though I'm not touching the partition size of hdb1?

use parted or something
oh, probably not then… use parted just in case anyway

gotcha.. thanks.

i've done it, but it makes me nervous

i tried parted once
never again

it's a PIAT admittedly
PITA

esp windows
if it's on the hd
i mean
there's some partition setting in some winnt\$BTsomethine
or not setting but what it is.. the value
but anyway

Is there a way to turn the caps lock key into a backspace (software side)?

a backspace?

caps lock is wholly unneccessary, as opposed to a backspace

xmodmap

ok, thanks

i made mine into control

But also for command line
Not just Xorg

use xmodmap
i turned mine into another shift

cp your current keymap and edit it, and make sure you load that one

oh

that's for console

on console there's another tool, like xmodmap
but I forget

i did it the old fashioned way ;p
afk, making buffalo burgers

What options do you pass to xmodmap?

i have just installed the upgrade of iceweasel

hmm I thought my bike got stolen two days ago I went outside and it wasnt there.. I just found it down in the council chambers when I went to go print that invoice. I don't remember ever taking it down there.. weird

cool, now wheni close the iceweasel window
there is no google connected !!

should consider visiting a shrink

hah, yeah right.. then who'd she see for help?
psychosis is contagious :P
I tell people when they ask me if I got problems.. shit, I got more issues than time magazine
i tried to unsubscribe, they just keep showing up on my doorstep
heh

hehehe
our cat just loves the stuff (buffalo)

has anyone here created a small home raid setup? Was it expensive?

Thats like this girl I met on the internet.. one of her friends tried to tell me I was weird recently..

that's what mdadm is for

what's that?

s/w raid with mdadm

software raid thing

I was like no, I'm strange.. weird would suggest I am supernatural.. I'm just unlike anything you know at this point.. I am strange

heh

it's easy.. the I in RAID stands for Inexpensive

gotcha.. guess I was talking more about hardware raid.

hardware raid isn't worth it

why not?

so I changed my name on myspace to Passing Strange.. cause apparently I'm talking things to a whole new level

heh

!hardware raid
!raid

i heard raid is Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. See RAID{0-5}, [Software Raid], http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels

bah

And of course I had to do something goofy and change my photo to 3 cats humping

I can see where a raided storage server for a home network would be useful.

that is a killer pic.. I'd hate to be that little cat on the bottom though.. got one cat on her back then another on top of that one

group cat fuck

yeah.. I shut that friend of hers up real quick

what's faster, USB2 or 100Mb ethernet?

none of her damn business anyhow… if the girl had a problem with me being strange, she'd have told me

well, theoretically USB2 is 480Mbps

okay.. just trying to decide whether I should move my usb drive before copying some files or just copy them over the network.

I've heard no complaints what-so-ever. Besides.. I artificially exaggerate how strange I am sometimes… part of the discovery protocol.. learning your boundaries with someone new.

does a usb hard drive just show up as hdc?

nope

sdc

sd*

USB would use the scsi disk module

thanks.

scsi sounds sleasy for some reason
hey man, did you probe her scsi bus?

hm.. doesn't mount autodetect the filesystem on the drive?

in the old days scsi was said as 'sexy' on the east coast and 'scuzzy' on the west coast u.s.

it can. Sometimes.

I've never heard it pronounced like sexy

hm..
is there a program I can run that will give me info about attached usb devices?

lsusb

tx.. hm.. my usb drive doesn't seem to show up.

mmm, bacon & egg pie

i haven't either, this was like the 70s or early 80s or something

i think a guinness would compliment that nicely

quite nicely, indeed

bacon and egg *pie*?

ah well shit.. I was only born in 83

this is some sort of foreignness to you?

ya, kinda like a quiche, but with bacon and eggs

first time i've heard of it

english origins i think

flaky pastry, throw in chopped up bacon ends, sliced onion, crack in eggs, cover with more pastry, cook

ugh stfu

figures ;p
quiche with a lid

quite tasty though

now I'm hungry

it's one of the world's most portable foods, because once it's cooked and cooled it's plenty solid, and good eats hot or cold

cept I don't have anything half as good as what you are making me hungry for

chew a fingernail

eww

er. I've got a bit of an issue with installing artwiz-cursor:
Leaving `diversion of /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/cursor.pcf.gz to /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/cursor.pcf.gz-artwiz by artwiz-cursor'

there's no telling what's under there

update-alternatives: Cannot find alternative `/etc/X11/cursors/core.theme'.

I got pop tarts.. but hell thats just gonna piss my stomach off

as a result it's stuck in a state between installed and not installed; I can't remove it and undo its changes and apt-get keeps showing it up as though it needs to be processd still whenever I do something else.

the packaging seems buggered. file a bug if there isn't one for that already

is there an option with cp to show a % complete or something so I'm not just sitting here wondering how far its gotten?

things like pop-tarts just make me more hungry

edit the postinst or {pre,post}rm

-v, or use rsync

i dunno how you guys eat that crap

could use rsync instead if you want progress displays

where would I find these? in the .deb?

nor me.

/var/lib/dpkg/info/package.{pre,post}{inst,rm}

thanks.
it's not there as it's not yet installed; heh.

it should be
they get installed when the deb gets unpacked

if it's unpacked, it is, just install it again

well; appearantly this one's stubburn. perhaps it didn't manage to get that far yet.

if it hist –unpack it's gonna be iffy, if it hits –configure they'll be there

have a better look, its those files that actually run things like alternatives

hits*

( can't "install it again", http://www.lhunath.lyndir.com/stuff/debian )

like early into the installation it gets killed say, it won't be. a bit past –unpack chances are good they'll be there… man a spend too much time watching shit install…..

Is there a good howto on setting up a software raid box?

tldp.org raid howto, the second version

well; I think I would see it if it were there. anything I have installed is there, but nothing art*

the first version is dead
maybe they removed the first version too ;p
i haven't been there in 2 years i think
nothing at /var/lib/dpkg/info/artwiz-cursor* ?

any cursor* files?

more like *cursor*

ya, anything with cursor

/var/lib/dpkg/info/industrial-cursor-theme.*
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libxcursor1.*

damn. wtf
you dpkg -i the deb again?

I apt-get installed it again, see the link I gave above for the result. should dpkg -i make a difference?

no it'd run the install again without having to go through apt (for the most part; you wouldn't have apt in the way, and you're just dealing with dpkg)

i dont see how it doesnt have the preinst in there

i know
that's really bugging me

how many sata disks does a typical motherboard support?

well I threw together two eggs on italian bread anyhow

it's 2 channels i think like regular ide

it has just been confirmed, it will make a turd..

hehhe

depends on the motherboard
at least 2

well; same deal with dpkg -i, nothing apt-related.

w. t. f.

if I made a raid server I'd want at least 4 drives in the raid array.

many come with 4

put your ls results for that dir on a pastebot

and you can get pci cards etc

ok, tell you what, let's do it this way.

sudo strace dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/artwiz-cursor_1%3a1.3-6_all.deb 2&1 | grep preinst
stat64("/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/preinst", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0755, st_size=582, …}) = 0

perfect. then one ide drive for the OS and such.

meh

ok, does that file still exist?

http://www.lhunath.lyndir.com/stuff/debian ls -al on that dir.
nope.

find yourself a tmp dir, extract the deb's control tarball, ar p thefile.deb control.tar.gz | tar xz -
zx rather
you trying to remove this package, right?

you do realize that apt has super cow powers right?

yup
crap afk

the whole "apt in the way" thing sounded a bit condescending

so has anyone here created a raid server? how many disks did you use.. any hot spares?

no, just trying to eliminate a layer that's all

I have 4 500G disks in raid 5

*.debs are tar archives?

I'm thinking about adding another

two tar.gz within an ar

nope they're ar archives

no, they're ar archives, that has 1 text file and 2 tarballs

so you have 1.5T of space? Do you have a spare in there ready to be used in the case of a failure?

oh, ar; thought you had mistyped tar.

the control.tar.gz has the postint and other management stuff in it

har.

inst*

oh well I'm going to sleep people are gonna be annoying me today.. probably sooner than I realize or could possibly appreciate

g'night

I have no clue what time this meeting is.. but I assume its in the evening

it can run degraded for a bit till I go grab another disk

I need to have a kid so I can give em my cell phone when I don't want to be bothered.. people will call to ask me stupid computer questions and the kid will just ask them why like 100,000 times

it's mostly just for mythtv

I don't have any "/etc/X11/cursors/core.theme"

there's only about 2gig of important stuff on it

gotcha.. is it your backend?

try touching it

yep

$ apt-file search core.theme
xcursor-themes: etc/X11/cursors/core.theme
maybe I should just install that

yeh

sounds like you are explaining sex to a retard
"trying to remove layers", now "try touching it"

heay
Hi all

hehehe

and the bit about the backend

I have too many damn boxes I wanna build.. wanna create a mythtv box… and a raid server box.

yeah, works now; I blame the set -e in that preinst for breaking stuff.
and the file should depend on xcursor-themes

bugfiling is mandatory, citizen.

s/file/package/

you run a web or mail server or anything like that on it?

I suppose

Debiankind thanks you for your thoroughness.

nope there are other systems for that
and WHY on earth would yhou need that much space for a webserver.
?

how many boxes do you have?

ummm.. counting workstations/desktops?

servers

2

3

mytbackend.. + internet mail/web server

Sorry thaught thats a count game

your db on the mythbackend or the other server?

for myth on the backend

Hello, I try to replace debian's livecd kernel from 2.6.18 to 2.6.22, but after that, sata harddisk can not recongnized.

there's also a seperate frontend

nod..
is the frontend diskless?

debian livecd isn't supported here.

and a workstation for my wife and a laptop for me and a wireless gateway..
ooh 3 servers

Guerin, so, where shall i ask this question?

the community wireless box is a "server"

dunno. #debian on irc.oftc.net might know.

I REALLY wanna set up a mythtv box.. I got comcast digital cable and a DVR last month and while it's cool, the extra $40/month it costs is just insane.

my frontend is not diskless
it's an old p3 system
hrm
oops p4 3Ghz

I think it would be cool to have a diskless frontend.

I concur
having a disk isn't that big a deal
main thing is that it needs to be quieter than the projector

nevyn, lol old

I've heard that mythtv is requires constant tinkering.. is that true?

meh it does the job
it takes some significant tinkering to get things how you want

you got a nice htpc case?

so does a $2 hooker but doesnt mean she won't give you herpes

and occasionally the developers break something
not yet.. it's on the list

well, I'd think once you got things working you wouldn't take any updates unless they were compelling.

new features are compelling
better ad skipping mame support

depends on what the features are.. haha

dvd playback

!sns syndrome

it has been said that sns syndrome is a serious disorder otherwise known as Shiny New Software Syndrome usually breaks out into an epidemic every time something new is released. Slashdot readers are more likely than others to contract the condition.

yeah I have that pretty bad

dpkg, sns syndrome =~ s/Software/Shit/

OK, Guerin

I have that when it comes to Quicken for some reason. haha

hence unstable/experimiental

you run your mthy box with unstable?

quicken fix tax stuff in new releases
yep

WOW.. no wonder
what about your other server?
I woudln't dream of running a server on anything but stable.

sarge wasn't even close to cutting it for media
web server is freebsd 4.x

How do I see which program is using a module?

the internet facing stuff is quite stable

lsmod

the module would connect to a device node to be accessed by a program

I should do some pricing and see how much it would cost to build a myth frontend and a raid backend.

lsof or fuser can tell you what is using a device node

for a raid settup I'd think the most expensive part would be the disks.

you can get like 500GB Sata drives for like $110 right now

if you want a LOT of spindles
you end up spending more per disk slot on the enclosure than on the disks
once you pass about 8 disks

probably 6 drives.. 4 for the raid, 1 spare and 1 for the OS

oh and something to plug them into
buy small os disk
and mirror them
(you could even use pata for this)
get a motherboard with lots of sata ports

that's an idea.. 2 40GB disks would be MORE than enough.

right

is there a tool to browse all available packages graphically without having them already installed ?

raid server need lots of memory?

synaptic

thats what bill gates said about 64k ram

and be able to know them by cathegory !

who's laughing now?!

if you're worried about performance the more ram the better

aptitude is your friend

Bill Gates never said that.

but what are you trying to achieve here

yes but aptiude is not graphical !!

just a centralized place for file storage.
Including media

yes

myth can get io heavy particularly if you have multiple highdef streams

for now I'd have 0 high def streams.

but my system copes perfectly fine with 3 standard def channesl

how much memory do you have?

2gig

what cpu?

core 2
it was a little more than the amd but it's been a world less suffering

you have the disks setup for easy access? Or do you have to open your case?

I have a chenbro hotswap cage

Nice!

but I didn't have to pay for it or I wouldn't have one.

it uses ncurses
you can run it from the command line or use the ui

thanks

there's synaptic, but its functionality is rather lacking

hello everybody
why sshd is not installed by default on etch ?

hot swap cages seem like a good idea for a raid setup.

because not everyone needs it

don't see any cages on chenbro's website.

so the package is openssh -server isn't it ?

http://www.chenbro.com/corporatesite/products_detail.php?serno=78

thanks.
so you wouldn't bother with hot swap cages if you didn't get them for free?
is your raid server a rack mount?

hey guys, is an englishman here, who can do me a favour at an off-topic please?

no

bimmel, im in the uk

I'd get a case withhotswap bays
but I wouldn't buy the adapter

night all

hm.. what's the adapter?

can you write down the speech of this video for me, my english is too bad to understand him talking http://www.dirty-pages.de/new-world-disorder-8-teaser/

the thingy to plug onto the drive, that inserts into the cage

the thing I just showed you

bimmel, no sound sorry - at work

well yeah but that's not what I ment
sigh

ah

oh okay, but thanks a lot for your offered help

no problem

Can anyone help me out with this compilation problem? http://paste.debian.net/34511

heloo there
is there a way to connect on a debian maschine if this maschine has no opensshserver installed, but I know user, root passwd?

telnet?

I didn't install telnet during installation..

walk?

sneakernet time

bad Dark_Apostrophe

ftp and add ssh to cron!

hi all

What?

suggesting telnet

Well I don't know any alternatives
ssh and telnet

telnet is very bad
!telnet

i heard telnet is an old protocol for remotely logging in to another computer. It is one of the basic utilities for TCP/IP. It is very insecure as it sends all traffic in plaintext! Seriously consider using ssh instead. see telnet-ssl, this one has encryption and certificates support (but
that's useless without a remote telnetd-ssl except to play and telnet to an https web server)

I know, I know

who makes cases with hotswap bays?

But it's better than nothing, if available

you tend to buy a hotswap bay seperately

nor telnet or ssh, I forgot… and now I really need to connect to thsi maschine..

##hardware best place to ask

nope
but anyway
hometime

Can't help ya then, sorry

thanks for the info.

are the debian alsa packages not to your liking?

hey the mill

arh someone knows how to do it.. I mean how the hackers works..

a default install as no open services.

They don't work for my soung card
see bug 3104 in alsa's bugtracker
So can anyone please help me compile it?

try apt-get install libalsaplayer-dev

It doesn't work
I've tried all debian alternatives

Hmmm…

_ONLY_ ALSA cvs works
*mercurial
See bug 3104

are you able to cherrypick that patch and bring it in to the debian alsa package?

ok

No idea
But in order to build a package, I'd still have to be able to compile it

it's easier for us if you give a url for a bug rather than us having to find their bug system first… https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3104

I didn't have the url at hand, sorry
I just remembered the bug number

the debian alsa-source package is already set up to compile under debian, that's all I'm thinking. If you're having to do things the hard way, then even picking up the debian alsa-source package and then dropping the cvs head into it to do the compilation would be possible…
or ask about this config file in #alsa. It sounds like the sort of thing that some sort of autotool should be making.

I've been in #alsa since last night, no reply

apt-get install libasound2-dev

It's already installed, px49

that's odd… normally the guys in #alsa are really helpful

Join and see for yourself

i need cheat codes to debian

Maybe they're asleep/at work/something

i need cracks or warez to debian, anyone have?

that happens occasionally. about 1500-2000 UTC is usually a good time for them, IIRC.

Debian is free software, both in the freedom and the price sense
You do not need any cracks or anything

What are the advantages of using Debian core over Ubuntu?

it works?

'Debian core'?

as opposed to anything "based on"

I mean, Debian is the core of all other debian-based distros
So why use it when I can use more feature-enhanced distors

hmm… the alsa pages don't actually say to run ./configure except with –help, which doesn't seem right. But I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/AlsaCVS

Yes, but it also runs configure

expect more people with nosuid mounted / :-)

ugh
is it even in debian still? must be

anyway, it would be best to find out what exactly messed with your mount options and sudo permissions, so it does not happen again

yes, my fault, i had cut & paste of knoppix fstab (but it was for normal mount with noauto, exec options). Now, i set to defaults, nodev
and now works

so it is..

does your irc client not highlight lines with your nick in it? that helps a lot in channel. But I'm pretty much out of ideas at present… I'm just googling around too. If you still don't get anywhere with any of the ideas we've been throwing around, then either ask again in a few hours when
different ppl are around or try again in #alsa or try an alsa mailing list.

Hi all got a kernel source question If I download the the linux-source-2622 package and compile with the default

yes, so we are sure that you see exactly what I am going to type

well done
go ahead
I have only english keyboard
nazcafan, write again

"Attrapé" it is going to be read "Attrapé" either on mac os X or fedora
and if I put a file whose name is "Attrapé" from mac os X, it is going to be read "Attrap?" the (? meaning the utf-8 invalid character stuff)

ok
Nazcafan

but Fedora will read it correctly "Attrapé"

if I use that words in one of my debian box with en_GB.utf8POSIX I can't see the word
however if I do it in my debian with iso85591 yes

what do you mean by "I use that words" ? where do you use them ?

on the consoler
console

I have backports kernel 2.6.18-4 failing to build an initrd on sarge: http://rafb.net/p/lPNZEk85.html - any ideas?
Google has very little of consequence that is up-to-date, and mostly for people who build their own kernels, which i don't.

Nazcafan, if I try to use a editor i can't get the word right neither

so you open an editor and try to paste "attrapé" in the editor ?

yes
and it is not able to read it

ooh
that is normal

why is this normal?
on my othe debian box with iso instead of utf is ok

what is your disktop environment ?

how to grep multiple words, I have 'address' word in line one and then I have 'network' word in line 2

let's make it easier, what is your editor ?

I want to frep address and network
I want to grep address and network

the one that is able to read is en_GB.iso88591 and theeditor is nano

ok, open a graphic editor

the other, is the same with en_GB.utf8

paste the word from xchat and save the file with utf8 encoding
then try to cat it from the utf8 terminal

then I have the same problem
argggggggg

wfq lunch time

hey
what is going on?
I need to fix it too
well I have done it form the iso one, as from the ut8 is a server without x
but I have saved as utf8
so that is absolutely right

hello

ekiga is gnomemeeting now

I know it is a trivial problem, but can't figure it out

hi, is there an application in debian/linux for router simulation … like netsim on windows?

Hello guys.
My friend had a problem - I've recompiled its kernel (now: 2.6.22.4, recompiled ’cause paravirtualization fucks up ATI drivers…). I've installed fglrx correctly - now when he starts X Server, its screen becomes black. Any solutions? (ATI Radeon X1950 PRO)
his kernel, of course.

Hi all, got a kernel source question. If I download the the linux-source-2.6.22 package and compile with the default settings, will it give me the same configuration as if I just downloaded the kernel image?

i'm not sure, but that sounds plausible

simonrvn, I thought so. Just wanted a stock kernel with paravirtops disabled really (for nvidia drivers).

utf8 is probably how the Perl and PHP people spell UTF-8. See also UTF-8.

besides, my only intent, ever, is to…return favours

well I wish I could figure what is going wrong with the encoding of usb sticks on my deb box

is that a hint that you want some help?

have you ever upgraded to sid and not known why…

well, if you have an idea, I am all ears

well, im no expert, but im sure it would help if you maybe told us what you did, what went wrong etc, to get an idea where your at

it seems that my deb box "over encodes" the filenames on utf-8

over encodes?

have you tried to read a utf-8 sequence when your locale is set to latin9 ?

i'm running somthing based on etch trying to get it working … its giving me a hard time so i'm just randomly installing packages
now im upgrading to sid and im afraid

don't think so. ive always been utf-8 on my machines as of late

well one character that has an accent will appear as two strange characters

but if your refering to "garbled" filenames, i can understand that

garbled ?

non-english perhaps a better description of what i meant

is your irc-client charset set to utf-8 ?

should be

ok
do you see that character "é" ?
as one single character
an e acute ?

well, i see an e with an accent above it, not sure what its called though

ok
well if I copy a file whose filename has an "é" from my debian box to my usb stick
then if I open it either on macos X or a fedora box I have at work
I will get this :
"é" instead of "é"

weird

what char set is macos and fedora using?

which is how you read utf-8 "é" when your charset is set to a latin1
fedora is using utf-8
but that is not enough

well thats the reson why

why ?
fedora is using utf-8 as debian

hmmmm, seems im en_CA.UTF-8 here

well either one need to have a character set changed
they don't match

why do you say they don't match ?

but if debian and fedora are both utf8, shouldnt he get the same filename on both?

you are getting a differnt output

what does gpg-tor mean?

where could i read about benchmarks regardings kernel made for 486 architecture versus kernel made for 686 architecture and their performances running on a native-686 architecture.I need to know if it's worth to take the time to get 686 kernel at home.thank you for any recommendations you
might have.

tor network (anonymous)

but the gpg part?

do your shell and terminal on the fedora box support utf-8? Are you logged in directly, on local console or X, or are you sshing from somewhere else?

authentication is done via gpg

#gentoo should know

i think you gen a key between the server host iirc from the freenode faq page to secure to connection or something

against a gpg key

jelly-home: yes, my shell supports utf-8 since I can read the kanji characters of a filename I put on the usb-stick from my macbook
(on the fedora box)

hmm, so it is a freenode thing? the using gpg

even RH9 supported UTF-8, my bet is everything's fine with fedora

check out the freenode web site. it has a section on using tor that explains it

jelly-home: I think that my debian box sets wrong the usb-stick encoding

hi, i'm searching for the command to update the time on my debian server - i have got ntp installed but can't find the command to update it

/join #tor and read http://tinyurl.com/f8wgc for more info
/join #tor and read a href="http://tinyurl.com/f8wgc"http://tinyurl.com/f8wgc/a for more info

which filesystem is on it? can you provide a hexdump of the affected file?

jelly-home: When I write a "é" from the macbook then I get the "wrong utf-8 character"
jelly-home: I think that the filesystem is vfat,

so, you're not directly connected to the fedora box?

jelly-home: what would a hex dump of the file help with? looking for utf8 chars in it or something?

jelly-home: yes I am physically in front of it
jelly-home: I think that the problem is at my home debian box and it is specific to my box

vfat has funny mount options that convert the _data_ sometimes

so is all tor traffic encrypted between host and server?
jelly-home: how did i know vfat would be involved with this somehow

because the used just said it was vfat?

i seen that btw, thus my comment

debian, so a three voting system would let me guess that my debian box settings are bad

most of the usb-sticks use vfat to be easilly used either on linux/mac/windows, I guess, plus they are shipped with vfat partitions by default

that is reasonable. paste the relevant line from /proc/mounts from debian and fedora
(when the stick is mounted ;-)

!tell faitz about ntpdate

jelly-home: I can paste you the fedora one right now , but you'll have to wait untill 17h00 gmt to get the debian one :-)
(when I get home)

debian is really a newcomer to the utf-8 game, and it's quite possible they get things wrong

I just had a hard time trying to use the usb-stick on the fedo box
why on earth usb plugs are so ill-designed you never know whether the orientation is good ?
jelly-home: oh oh
/dev/sdb1 /media/usb vfat rw,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=ascii,utf8 0 0
what is cp437 ?

ms-dos codepage for US

jelly-home: so how should I read this line ?

which box is that from anyways?

as I said, the fedo box

not utf-8 compliant. Try mounting with explicit codepage=utf8,iocharset=utf8

what is the stick formatted too?

er, sorry. disregard the codepage= option

jelly-home: ok, sounded weird to me

thank you

jelly-home: I can read either japanese and european filenames on the usb-stick, so it must be a variant of unicode, underneath, I don't know which one

however that ascii,utf8 is a bit funny. my vfat partition on Debian has /dev/sda8 /d vfat rw,[cut],codepage=cp437,iocharset=utf8,shortname=winnt
filenames and file contents are handled differently.

jelly-home: I was speaking about filenames
If I ls in the usb folder, I can see the japanese filenames as well as french accents

vfat is an old format , am i wrong?

jelly-home: here is what I *assume* is wrong
I installed my debian box 3 years ago

sorry, was your issue with a filename, or contents of a file?

jelly-home: filenames
filenames from files copied from the debian box

then if I open it either on macos X or a fedora box I have at work

ok, so now did you catch me ?

try correcting the errors then format your usb stick to somthing differnt

there's a simple explanation, then. Debian did not set iocharset=utf8, but used default latin1 (or similar).
no need to.

meh..

please do NOT /msg me

damn trying to help

format incompatibilitys is the oldest issue in the book
just boring me to death is all

jelly-home: I have this issue also with usb hard drives the files with accents ( copied from windows machines) show invalid unicode characters
when read on the debian box

hey guys

next time you use the stick on debian, make sure that vfat filesystems are mounted with iocharset=utf8 and that that matches the locale you're using

does anyone use Flock the web browser?

jelly-home: I think there is sort of a translation between the locale I am using and the usb-stick encoding
jelly-home: I'll paste you something to explain it to you

./flock-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
what do I need to install?

jelly-home: http://rafb.net/p/ru8VIB70.html

jenny_, the current libc is v6 and you need to install a libstc-compat lib version 5

lib64stdc++6 - The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 (64bit)

jelly-home: I made one ls using utf-8 encoding and one with the euro (iso-8859-15) encoding

hi. i am new to debian. i just did my first install on a macbook.

apt-file search libstdc++.so.5

the macbook does not have net-access, so i have to stick with the software on the 3dvds + debs i am dl here.

congrats

thanks.

jenny_, apt-get install libstdc++5

jelly-home: wait, this paste is no good
forget it

that's just changing the way your app (ls) displays the names.
not the issue

now i would like to use an external usb-hd under win & gnu/linux. but fat32 partitions are not good and ext2/3 drivers for win are not good, too.

the lib is called libstdc++5 ( implies version 5 ) but in the description there is to read: This is Version 3. Does it make sense to someone?

jelly-home: the thing is that whatever your locale is, if the character is in your locale encoding, it is going to be displayed correctly,

thank you so much… flock is now working

so you're stuck with fat then, eh?

so i thought of using ntfs. but i do not know if the dvds include drivers to read&write ntfs for gnu/linux.

fat32 works with linux

apt-get install libstdc++5 was it

mbroeker, apt-cache policy libstdc++5

the problem is you have mismatched locale and mount options on the debian box, so the filenames written there get munged, and there's no way of helping it now (apart from renaming)

4gb.

jenny_, can you please make a screenshot of this flock thing? i wanna see a socialized browser right now

ahh, you say the ext2/3 drivers for win are not good? [ntfs would really be my last resort]

so my question is, if debian 4.0 dvds (3) include a driver for gnu/linux to write ntfs?
i tried them and they do not work properly.

no, get an internet connection

you can download the browser at flock.com

jelly-home: I use Hal and gnome mount, how can I be sure that from now on, the mount options will be properly set ?

flock is a browser with some extensions
like firefox

no idea, sorry

jelly-home: :'( :'( :'(

flock is pretty

i went to a new house, and the internet-connection will take another 2 weeks.

useless to me ;p

i second defrysk.

jenny_, well i have seen the demonstration site of flock. but there is no 1024×768 screenshot of it

but i can download debs from here, if i need them.

well borrow your neibours wifi then

must be a girly thing "hides'

i did not manage to get the atheros-card to work :/

if you want to fix a filename right now though, you can pipe it thru iconv -f utf8 -t latin1

you need the internet for that to work

!tell trebor_win about madwifi

ntfs-3g is avail from backports.org

thanks, i will read it (now).

eg. file=/media/usb/Richard*; mv "$file" $(echo "$file"|iconv -f utf8 -t latin1)

it's available from debian proper too

the version in etch is old

probably. but: worked for me when I needed it

is apt-zip painless to use?

jelly-home: that is what I dit when I switched my box to utf-8

no… you did the opposite, probably

but I wish to just have the correct settings each time I plug a usb device so I can read the filenames
jelly-home: err, yes, maybe, I don't remember the options, that was 6 months ago

you'll need to fix the way your fs gets mounted

how can i access the debs (download?) from here in order to install them at home?

on amd64 bit debian is there a package that has libcom_err.so.2 as a 32 bit library

jelly-home: yeah but I don't know whether it is hal, gnome-vfqs, gnome-mount who handles it and how …

did you say that the driver for ntfs did work for you?

[old worked] yes. there's also the small problem of new ntfs-3g requiring newer fuse userspace and kernel module to work

random update will fix everything

jelly-home: I guess these problems just don't happen with recent installs but mine is like 3 years old

yeah re-installing a system is annoying
i'm messing up this fresh install good

do you have default system locale?

jelly-home: yes

oh hello. i would like to compile the missing gd support into the php5 debian etch source package (php 5.2.0)

I think it is set to fr_FR.UTF-8 also
but I am not sure
shouldn't it ?
could it be the problem ?

hmph. oh well, even if you upgraded, it's still a bug if all your locale settings are UTF-8 and still your vfat gets mounted with iocharset=latin1

can i compile it (as module) against an instlled version of apache 2 (alos the etch package)
?

hi all
do i need TCP/IP networking in kernel for a home pc connected to a modem/router via eth ?

"missing gd support"?

yup

stupid question: is php5-gd installed?

yes guess so…

what are you missing?

imagerotate funtion

jelly-home: I will check whether you are right about the iocharset, but with a iocharset latin1, I should not be able to put japanese_filenames from the debian box to the usb stick, should I ?

ive googled on that
ive found a bug filed concerning this issue

ah, the difference between upstream and php-provided GD

the maintainer wrote its to much a security risk to supply all these mosules compiled in or so
yes
mosules = modules

my comments on that "resolution" of the bug cannot be stated in public :-)

was it you ?

I guess you could install the php-dev package (dunno the correct name) and build the module separately
sorry, not the module, just that php webhosting extension

hi everbody
how can i re-generate locales?

no need to rebuild the whole of php5.

oh ok..
this is confusing. beginners question - where do i start? would i recompile php5-gd?

how can i configure locales in debian?

to rebuild a package from debian sources, see /msg dpkg simple sid backport
instead of step 1), just add a deb-src line to /etc/apt/sources.list just like the deb line for your mirror.

ok. but would php5-gd be the module i'ld have to rebuild?

pfft cya guys, in hell

yes. however all of php5-* is built from the same source

Or is that not the way things work

!tell faber4 about locales

e ae turma… wassup…

why/when should I use linux-image-2.6.22-1-686 versus linux-image-2.6.22-1-486?

I have a Realtek RTL8169/8110 nic card
but I am unable to use internet
what i need to do

ok. i assume i need to add deb-src for sid true? currently its only for main

locate and dlocate, along with updatedb do a decent job ;-) (no , not all files), use dumpe2fs -h /dev/hda1 for ex, to see general FS info

jelly-home: so find would be the quickest way of getting an index of the filesystem

if you have a really old, or a weird embedded cpu that doesn't have all the -686 feature, you'd use -486
uif you have a really old, or a weird embedded cpu that doesn't have all the -686 feature, you'd use -486/u

now that i have that done my only other issue is streaming media from the web i.e how to install realmedia, since fedora only support free software what is the replacement for real media in fedora ? (if there is a tutorial then i'd be happy to follow a link)

untill december anyways

VileGent, hmm.. fair point
VileGent, but when december comes, FC6 won't cease to exist

pembo13_com, as far as we are concerned it will

the replacement for realplayer is realplayer

VileGent, fair enough

fc6 will go EOL month after f8 comes out

tux-nut: rpm -ivh http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/RealPlayer9-9.0.7.151-6.fdr.0.i386.rpm

opsec mplayer or xine with the codecs

too bad you ca't get sound with xine or mplayer .. just video

great …………thank you and also thanks to VileGent for your support

opsec, you can't?

something wrong there

at least i, nor zcat could do it since fc5
cook.so.6 is the sound codec

give me a link to a realplayer video

doesn't matter for me anymore .. got rid of all real media content

opsec, I take it you're refering to a specific codec

too bad we don't have a trigger to automatically berate someone anytime they say fc5

VileGent, i think the BBC uses real player, listened to it in FC6

mrtwig.net
download any rm southpark ep

fc4

after that .. no workie

VileGent, very rare nowadays ime. but here's some .rm that plays well enough for me: http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Physics/8-01Physics-IFall1999/CourseHome/index.htm

excuse me, does anyone know how to set up a firewrie network on Fedora?

what's that?

*firewire, soory

firewire network?

yes

opsec, i'm guessing he means connecting to computers together with a firewire cable

i'm not guessing anything

naquan, i've never done such myself in any OS
naquan, google may know, ask him

ok, im off now to read http://fedoraos.org …………………….. thanks again and im still impressed with fedora7

firewire daisychaining drives yes setup network between computer no

VileGent, i think it was semi possible with USB… again, never tried

pembo13_com, bluetooth

opsec, dloaded an apperently audio only file

k. i can't play it anymore either (all i get is audio). had a different setup in fc6 when i last played any .rm vid: http://mfile.akamai.com/7870/rm/mitstorage.download.akamai.com/7870/8/8.01/f99/videolectures/wl99lec1-300k.rm

opsec, well, maybe it has video.. .only getting audio

odd.. i get only video
wtf?
i have 2 identical intellistations here .. one plays damn near everything
the other doesn't

exactly what we were saying before

can't tell why
i was trying to sort it out last night .. can't figure it out .. i have every codec under the sun now on the one in question

opsec, gonna see if i can fix the video

even reinstalled the whole thing .. can't tell what's wrong .. and really realmedia isn't important enough to try anymore

HI I need some help on updating kdemultimedia-extras-nonfree there is a dependency missing

PABLO-VIVA: yum update .. paste the output to: http://rafb.net/paste
all of the output

Here is the output http://rafb.net/p/szGPHd73.html

ok… so the fix is to install mplayer.hu's all codec pack vs the essential pack. "all-20061022/drv3.so.6.0"

done that
still doesn't work for me ..
PABLO-VIVA: try to yum remove the package and yum install again

ospec if I cannot install it again due to dependency missing?

then it will be fixed within a day or so .. or you can contact the package maintainer and let them know

ok thanks I'll try that
Is there a way of telling yum to install a particular version of a package?
since the man pages does not mention it

PABLO-VIVA: if you don't have it already installed, you can just fully specify the version as part of the package name

It does mention it.

Do i do it separate them with colon?

opsec yum remove totem?

for the rm stuff?

yum remove totem -plparser as well

Hola f_newton

hey Sonar_Guy long time !!! how ya bee there bud?

I cannot install a given version of a package using yum

Not too bad, back in Georgia. Just got online again today. lol

It rejects me all the combinations of th epackage name and the version

How have you been??

back in Georgia??
Ive been well…. a bit under the weather right now

i have a problem

Yeah we moved back down here. Had enough of the Virgina fun.

9f7caedd316d28686cb320c1640d07d403ab95ef

enough.

this is my check sum on the cd its 9f7b
ok sorry

are things going ok with you?
Sonar_Guy, ?

is there any way to checksum fedora

if you have a specific problem use complete sentences and explain it logically

good. Real good.

never mind I ended up using pirut for that

download the sha1sum and check it

i want to check sum fedora 7 live
i did down load and check all ove google u get this problem

glad to hear it Sonar_Guy

I hope things are going as good for you as well!!
brb, smoke time!!

ftp://mirror.anl.gov/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Live/i386/SHA1SUM
that is the livecd checksum

working 12hrs a day 6 days a week right now…. working for a temp agency as an electrician… money is good but work is hard hot and long

ok
were do i get the file to match from il dump mine
thats i 386 i ned i 686
i cant get check sums to match

finally got video + audio

download the live cd and the SHA1SUM to the same directory

in mplayer

sha1sum -c SHA1SUM

that sounds like rough work

http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/linux/releases/7/Live/i386/
all you need is there

there nboth on my desk top
all over google is this eror
can i check sum one there burnt?

it is Sonar_Guy . I dont work saturdays but the rest of the crew is working 7 days a week and has for the last two weeks.

you don't check the checksum of a burnt iso, you check it before you burn it to make sure you're not burning a corrupted download
this is the purpose of checksums

wow thats tough.

well Ive been checking in to the reason and apparently this is the habit of the particular electrical contractor in question

ah ok.

Sonar_Guy, I call it poor management skills and very bad labor estimation

That typically is the cause of most overtime. lol

DCC SEND OPERJOPIAEWRJGPOIAWJREIPJWRIGJWIPGJAWPIJG

the workers are angry and tired Sonar_Guy things are not going as well as they could be because of the overworked and tired condition of the employees

I understand that.

well I can use the money so I'll deal with it for a while

i dont know that wont check sum

I know what you mean, I am currently unemployeed, but that is my choice. lol

I thought you liked your work Sonar_Guy
being unemployed sux Sonar_Guy
lots going out …. nothing coming in

It was nice but the travel got to be obscene.

f_newton, being a student is worse

yeah I understand that…. well a man of your credentials should have no problems re-employing yourself

so I cut out the travel and will be working from the house for them part time as I attend college.
Only doing email/phone support.

Remember folks…
It's only ignorance the first time.
After that, it's stupidity.

lol

hey have pity there's no cure for stupid
lol
pembo13, I would love to be a full time student again…. the easy life again
lol

f_newton, wouldn't call it easy… worrying about the money sux

lol it only gets worse!

wage-slavery is fun.

touche
hey if the biggest problem in your life is money then its not all that bad!

Also remember…

this must come from a person who lives where food and shelter is free

You can take the kid out of the stupid, but you can't take the stupid out of the kid.

lol ive been paying rent since I was 18

truisms… how they come and ……stay

anyone know why the userdirs in apache hafta start with a ~?

ixion_uk, rent, taxes, food, transportation, clothes, insurance etc etc etc
shall I go on?

yeah I pay all that stuff

Because that's how you identify a user's home dir.

dental bills, no med bills for u in england,

Im just saying compared to other stuff it aint that bad

well war etc yean

lol you tink I use NHS?

uh yeah

trust me if offered I would stop paying my 10% NS every month and use proper doctors

ok. just curious as to why that was….

my 10% just goes towards the supporting the tossers that leach off the country

opsec, thanks for that link

anyway this wasnt my point lol

i need to automatically mount a samba share. any good docs that I can read on how to do that?

kc8hfi fstab

well good night all especially you Sonar_Guy and yer mrs. Sonar_Gal . I am glad to hear from y'all again

kc8hfi just google mount sama fstab

ok thanks

g'night

time to go to sleep

now that we are online again we will be around more. Talk to you later

k

um how the hell are you supposed to shut down when ure in the gui
and not root
login as root?

there should be an option to shutdown there

XFCE
its greyed ou tlol
I never use gui its all new to me

are you using a display manager?

hmm ok. hang on, let me go fire up my old box with xfce on there and see what I can find…

hangon got it
have to logout then shutdown
I just installed and got up and running http://www.ampache.org/ sooo good
for streaming tunes
and managing tunes too
if anyone likes that stuff
was lookin for a way to listen to my tunes from work

ixion_uk, i use kplaylist myself

is it sql based?

ixion_uk, yes.. scanns my hdd, and stores data in mysql

sweet, and streams over http ?

sounds like amarok

ah yes… cool checking it out now

ixion_uk, yah… google it, they have screenshots

if its as good or better than that ampache thing ill be seriously impressed

ixion_uk, not sure how many features such an app can possibly have.. so would say that it should be as good as
ixion_uk, have it running on my home server

well the beaut of ampache is that you can choose various streaming methods so it integrates with vlc, windos media player etc but aso has its own built in flash based player
and cos its all sql hosting you can build playlists instantly etc

ixion_uk, ah.. .well that has more features for sure

ah ok
well thanx for info anyways

ixion_uk, cool, i've bookmarked the one you use.. .looks interesting if i ever need more features

do u use disk one to check sum ther rest?

pembo13 how does this thing stream?
pls, m3u ?

ixion_uk, over http, yes
ixion_uk, as in i just click the link, and local player opens up , buffers, then plays

looks like m3u
which is good

ixion_uk, it is

so it treats the stream like a shoutcast stream?

might check it out.. it just seems to be lacking the flash player that ampache has

it's just a basic mp3 over http stream, nothing fancy

cant harm having two interfaces to my tunes

ixion_uk, that it does
ixion_uk, haven't set it up fully on my server yet cause i haven't figured how to get it to ppay nice with SELinux

I havent learnt to play nice with selinux

ixion_uk, if you run any net facing machines, you should

yess… Miro is in updates-testing

for now I just point a single port at it… its only a vm running on my workstation.. playing about
when I move house I may set things up properly

ixion_uk, cool

anybody messed around with rhel5 and oracle products?

daMaestro, an updated rocksndiamonds too, but the changelog doesn't say if this is the version with the "infringing" music ripped out.
unless that's what "- use clean tarball" means

hi, i'm using yum to install kannel. i've done it before but i remember i had to do something first to include extra applications in the yum database or something… i can't even remember what this process is called to find a howto

did you add the livna repos?

how do i in fedora install my grub if its been over written?

man grub-install

um grub-install doesnt work .

was that directed at me?

wait do i need to do /usr/sbin/grub-isntall?

not the thing about grub. was wondering if you added the livna repository

First you claim it doesn't work, then you ask how you're supposed to use it. Which is it?

nvm

Alpha_Cluster, I think kc8hfi wants you to type "man grub-install" to read the manual for it..

I think everyone here can assure you that there's no point in claiming grub-install doesn't work.

i am to used to having sbin being in path
oh it works
i just used it .

it will be if you use 'su -' instead of just 'su'

i got a bit over eager coming here .

i don't actually know what that means. i'm a freebsd user with a client who runs fc3. i know i had to do _something_ last time i did this but i didn't write it down… what is adding the livna repo?

ahh

WTF is this "." supposed to mean?

must i explain that ?

FC3 is completely unsupported.

mwilson, the "" and "" are eyes and the "." is a nose.. Showing frustration :|

thank god someone else knows

ahh ok. the livna repo contains tons of software. but I don't think fc3 stuff is there anymore

http://www.fedorafaq.org/#yumconf — that looks like it

Not for quite some time.

i have another fc3 system with the setup i need. can i somehow get the config from yum from that?
s/from/for/1

hello everyone, how can I connect to a fedora 7 box using XDMCP?
I've use tsclient to connect but no luck
another windows machine using XMing to connect just fine

yeah, just check the /etc/yum.conf.d directory for the conf files. that should work

okay thanks

might wanna suggest to the clients that upgrading to F7 would be very beneficial to them

okay i've got /etc/yum.conf and /etc/yum.repos.d so i'll copy those across thanks
i don't want to suggest anything to this client i just want to get them out of my hair
if i were to suggest anything it would be a move to fbsd cos that's where i'm most comfortable

make sure you keep a copy of the original files before you nuke them
on a side note, I just wanna say that apache kicks some major behind!!

Hello. I'm having some trouble. IK have this kernel module i need to compile. I have installed yum kernel-headers. However, when I rubn make on this kernel module, I get an errror "ERROR: using glibc headers!" and many subsequent errors

do you also have kernel-devel installed?

I'm wondering what package I should be installing to get the correct headers?
hmm
i could try that package

hi guys, quick question, does anyone know if the ocfs2 tools exist in an rpm somewhere for f7?

The what?

ocfs2, the oracle cluster fs

il burn it in another os and see if k3b burner lies

apparently not, but I wouldn't be surprised if Oracle provides working RPMs already
try these: http://oss.oracle.com/projects/ocfs2/files/RedHat/RHEL5/

well… yes and no… i've found
yeah… exactly
they dont feel like they working ok on f7… but it may be me screwing something up… np

oh, wait, those are drivers, not tools

yeah, but the tools are just in the ocfs2 tools repo

yeah, found them

i just couldnt make em work prop'ly… but i'll give it another go

i need help install netbeans
i think have to install the jdk first

i do believe you need a jdk first
i don't know how anyone else likes to do it, but I like to download the jdk from sun, extract it myself, and put that in my path
and fix up links to the java executable
and fix up links to the java hosting executable

kc8hfi http://www.fedorasolved.org/Members/strikeforce/sun-jdk/ http://www.fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/netbeans/?searchterm=netbeans

whata is kc8hfi

A HAM callsign.

why?

Dwayne, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null

i'm pretty new to fedora. a friend just told me i should use ispconfig. is this true?

what?
who?

trying to install fedora but cant pas the chec sum

"Use" it? Use it for what?

DVD burn must have an error

not dvd

okay i've got a running yum.conf with (what appear to be) livena repos for fc3 from here: http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc3/samples/yum.conf but it won't recognise kannel as an argument. i downloaded an rpm for kanenl 1.4.0 for fc3 from here: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/dag/fedora/3/i386/kannel-1.4.0-3.1.fc3.rf.i386.html and i should happiliy be able to upgrade to 1.4.1 from source after that's installed, but the rpm doesn't resolve the dependencies. is there a w

live iso dl wont check

did you sha1sum the iso before burning it?

there's a pretty good chance the drive has problems detecting the end of the disk
which will screw up the mediacheck

I'm wondering how many times you have to be told that FC3 is unsupported?

haent burnt yet no sums pased moved over to windows to see if its was k3b

i think k3b just does an md5sum of whatever is you're trying to burn

yeah
but some told me i lies test
if u tested and pass live id live to get the disk
this is my 10 time dl so far

did you sha1sum the download, and did it match??

is there some way i can use the kannel RPM as an argument to yum?

no match

I am using network-manager-cmd -i -c -f /info to set network hardware….but the network hardware won;t change
everything else does
it wount add my Wlan device
wont*

You're using sha1sum, and not md5sum, correct?

no, yum doesn't work that way.

nope iam useing md5
list of numbers

when i first ran fedora installed feora it set it up right, how to i get network-manger to be like you just installed it…

Well THERE'S your problem…

what?

if you have the rpm downloaded locally, you can install it with "yum localinstall" blah.rpm

Fedora switched to SHA1 checksums a while back.

use sha1sum to check the iso
not md5

how u use them?

brilliant! so then that should resolve the dependencies…

in a shell

yep, check out the man page for yum

sha1sum iso image

Anyone have a clue?

that's great thank you very much

hi
I really need help if anyone is around here..

woot mega editions of bladerunner coming out at the end of the year!!

mind you, if it needs packages that aren't in an installed+enabled repo, it won't find them

mr-shutter: what isn't working?

How can i install compiz fusion?I reall cant find no help?

My herdware list for network config is messed up
hardware*
network manager…

i am dont under stand screwed?

herdware? cowware??

Anyone know how to install compiz fusion ?

were do i get that iso from?

Other than by reading the instructions?

Mwilson

i did… system-config-network-cmd -i -c -f /profilefromlivecd

i have been looking around!
I cant find no help..

the list includes wireless device with adress from live cd, and when loaded into network manger on my install… it ignores the wireless, will still load ethiernet

mr-shutter: ok, so, everything was fine until you ran that command?

no
i deleted a hardware device in the GUI
and i cant add it again

Could anyone please help me out?

and my wireless device…looks like a ethiernet device…

can some steer me straigt u cant check sum fedora u need a program to do
it?

the command to run a sha checksum is sha1sum.

Well, under Linux.

anyone know of a tool which can place a graphic on the X root window? Prefferably on top of the bg set by Gnome?

oops, yeah, under fedora linux to be more specific
google for compiz

I have
but I cant find no help for intsalling Compiz Fusion on Fedora

Or better yet, CHECK THE FRICKING RESOURCES IN THE TOPIC.

?

right… that appears to be the casw
case

Basicly, is there a way for my network config do an auto setup like it does with live cd?

DOnt be so hard on me

ccan some help me out

the command to run a sha checksum is sha1sum.

mr-shutter: have you tried running system-config-network and add your device there?

yes…
it doesn't see it like it did when i installed
also
i did
system-config-network-cmd -i -c -f /profilefromlivecd

will fedora core run on a pentium 3 1ghz with 1 gigabyte of memory?

of course it will

i saved the out put from live cd and imported it to install..right, but it won't add the wireless…device….which….i had the switch of to….
:/

were do i find that checker i have tools

it in fedora

i have a pentium 3 1ghz will it run just as fast as a p4 1.4 ghz system

wait…wtf..dude. Just burn fedora and run CD CHECK befor install

i just dont like pentium 4's .

hi all

snowbird, fedora install cd have a dick check buit in…

is there any command I can use to find out my front side bus speed / ram type?
I want to buy some new ram and I've lost my mobo documentation…

motherboard docs are online

yes..

do you know the make and model number of the board?

i dont see checker

your motherboard has the manufacturer stamped on it somewhere, find it and look it up online

it's a d865perl

so if i burn disk live it ahs checker?

i dont have the serial number

that a dell?

live disk…no

I assume that was directed at me? my mobo is a mercury by a company called kobian… total noname. they have no docs on their website (which is in broken english)

865 sounds like an intel chipset

wtf\

mr-shutter: do you get any error messages when you try to add a device from system-config-network?

and the bios won't let me turn off this acpi b.s. in the bios..and it has this option ive never heard of..

i don't have any money.

no

lost im to burn and then disk check?

i have 768mb of memory in the p4

you need to check the iso BEFORE you burn it

when i had a p3 even ubuntu would run pretty fast

snowbird, is it a install or live cd?

live cd

he's been told 2 hours ago
doesn't listen

but for some reason there's some setting in my bios that might be set wrong

ive been looking for long time

snowbird, if it works, i works..

maybe i better give up

maybe you better listen

where can i find a system where ALL options in a bios are available

who listen?

even if it's a p3

Serisously?
ANyone installed it before?

to what i told you 2 hours ago

mr-shutter: I don't know exactly what to do ot fix this, but I like to mess around with stuff, and I would try this:

suckyt

i deleted all of sysconfig…

i gave you a link and told you what to do exactly

lol…

so, I don't know what specific model my mobo is (iirc, it doesn't say on the board — I looked when I installed it)… I'm hoping there's some way for me to get that info from the comp

i did that link

from these links im seeing in google its seems like DDR 400

it had w hat i know belinve is old way to check

mr-shutter: go into the /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices. you should have something in here already, ifcfg-eth0 probably

ie http://www.memoryx.net/ind8debome3.html

there is some ting i need

kc8hfi, there is a file for it int here

you're hopeless .. on second thought, yes, maybe you should give up as you suggested

mr-shutter: make a copy of this file, say, ifcfg-eth1. then edit the file, changing mac address and stuff to match your other network device

i copied it from the live cd
still no help
i deleted all of sysconfig .

yes… that was what tigerdirect sold me, but I bought a second DDR 400 chip and it didn't work. I spent many hours on the phone with tech support and came to the conclusion it actually wants DDR 333 (I think). I just want to make sure before I have another fiasco

too, because i got fed up

dam wont install

i think…the device was of…
off

were can i get a disk that passed that check

mr-shutter: you nuked the entire sysconfig directory, or just the contents?

…..there is a switch on lappy

hmm must be my pc

hole directory
snowbird, you can ask for them on the fedora site..i think
they , mail it to you

DDR333 = PC3200?

whole*

i tried there out for now
il ahve to try beging of month

hmm any decent DDR 400 should have timings for 333 in its SPD
no 333 = 2700

maybe mr-shutter some one here can test and burn

mr-shutter: hmm, you might wanna repair the filesystem rpm package. better yet, I would just rebuild the box

maybe my ram wasn't decent… I thought it should work at 333 from what I know of digital electronics (I have a B.S. in it, after all…)

im gunna try botting fedora and see if it work…now i put the switch on…
bbl

so how much memory you got in there now and how many slots does it take up?

but the tech support guys from both the RAM vendor and tiger direct said 333
I have 1 DIMM of 512mb

k

can anyone give me the solution? I've made as it recomended at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DebuggingEclipseProblems
there is lots of libswt missing

yea maybe its a case of the new ram doesnt like the old one, swap it for another brand?

thign is i have two ide drives and my mobo thinks they're sata/pata drives

I was kinda afraid to try that after the initial problem… tigerdirect wouldn't give me a refund, so I ended up giving the extra stick to my gf :P

heh

any ideas with fedora-eclpse?

do you think if i put them in legacy mode in my bios
things might speed up a bit

hmm thats not very nice of tigerdirect

yeah, well, they're cheap enough so that I don't really have a choice of not going back to them… btw, I'm testing one of my friends 400 chips right now (different brand) to see if that was the prob

thign is i have two ide drives and my mobo thinks they're sata/pata drives

ok cool, good luck (fingers crossed)

do you think if i compiled my own kernel things would work better?
like take out stuff i dont need

no
answer my question.

well ide=pata

i dont know im new to PC world
what kind of settings should i have enabled if im using gnome

settings for what?
"settings" is vague and obscure

well i have a p4 2.4ghz chip in this d865perl motherboard
im trying to think what could be slowing it down
it takes a good ole delay to even load up the terminal in gnome

can u install from live cd

you like to speak in generalities .. which leads me to believe you just want to talk ..
yes

without rm'ing modules is there a way to stop a module loading under any circumstances?

it fails at "grub loading stage 2"… just like the old setup. I'll try switching the slots, but I can't believe that matters

yes
blacklist

however when i test a distro that doesnt use /sd* instead of /dev/hda, etc. things run smoooth

blacklist isnt working

describe "isn't working"

also, with one stick, I've noticed over the year or so I've had the comp that about 1 in 15 or so boots will fail similarly, I've always assumed because of the speed mismatch on the ram

perhaps you need an unemployment office?

there're still being loaded on startup… kvm and kvm_intel

might be worth running memtestx86 on that ram

pcspkr was another one i ended up just rm'ing from the kernel tree

nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
wait kvm ?
yum remove kvm

I did it back when I was having these issues the first time around… with 2 sticks, it lights up like an xmas tree. with one, it works great

lol oops

yeah, but i still want kvm, this is the problem, i just want it to stop loading on startup

system-config-services
i don't use any virtualization .. so i'm not familiar with how kvm starts

you know if that boards try to run ram in dual channel mode? if ram is'nt match then dual channel mode will fail on mismatched memory

I just remembered something… I think the mobo works up to 400mhz, but the processor has a 333 fsb

services start on boot, kernel modules load on boot

I had to set a jumper to 333 to make it work at all

from what i can tell its not actually being loaded by anyting in servcies… but thats ok, i think i have my answer anyway… maybe i can write a script that removes the kvm modules from the kernel tree and only puts them back it when i actuall want to use kvm

and I'm not quite sure what you mean by dual channel… isn't that the definition of DDR?

blacklist should work, if it doesn't maybe you've done it wrong?

naah, its working ok for some modules, just not all

i wouldn't know, nor would anyone else, since you haven't provided your blacklist file

dual channel is where two sticks of DDR or 2 run together as one so instead of 64bit access to the memory its 128bits, basically doubling mem access, but like i say requires matches sticks ro run correctly

http://rafb.net/p/p0DBv191.html

the kvm modules load in /etc/sysconfig/modules/kvm.modules. Blacklist should stop them tho…

looks ok except that kvm is not vmware

it doesnt… but…

indeed… fornicating or not.

yes, note the comment is "f**king vmware" meaning if i load vmware with kvm in the kernel im dead

perhaps modify your vmware init script to unload the kvm modules?

afaik, it just does the double data rate thing, which you seem to indicate is different from dual channel

its a possibility.. but its not actually startup of vmware that causes a kernel lockup per-se its the startup of a vm…

yes its double date rate ram but thats just on one memory module, dual channel ram requires two matched sticks of memory

yeah, the kvm and vmware kernel modules are not compatible… not surprising.

no, not supprising at all

heh

neither are the xen ones for that matter iirc

why don't you load up qemu and install xen as well?
maybe they can all be one happy family

hello… when running lsmod, it shows a list of modules that are loaded. Which configuration file does all these appear in? So, when you boot up, all the modules automatically loaded must be loaded from some config file…

it's a virt party!

heheheh
maybe one day…

misc–: the kernel dynamically detects most of them… they get autoloaded based on the hardware thats detected.

try that other stick in another slot, most dual channel boards require the ram to be inserted in set slots, right slots = dual channel, wrong slots = normal single channel

hi guys, i've added a SAN lun to my fedora. i've formatted it as ext3. what should i do in /etc/fstab to make it automount everytime?

doesn't it only double the data rate when you have two sticks, with one stick using the rising edge of the clock and te other the falling edge?

oh I see.. because I have a network card module that I need to load at boot time but not sure where to load it (don't want to use rc.local)

it only has two slots (and both chips are same size/speed, but different manufacturers)

ahh

idle-jam: whats the device it came up as?

misc–: you might look at /etc/modprobe.conf and man modprobe / man modprobe.conf

what is this IEEE stuff

so, even if the mobo supports up to 400mhz, if my processor only has a 333mhz fsb, should I get 333mhz ram?

try dropping the memory timing in the bios CL3 instead of 2

can you be more specific? in what context?

yeah that's what I thought. I actually did use that, but it failed to load. Maybe I was doing it wrong. Oh well I'll look into it. Thanks

I don't know what that means… in fact, I'm not even sure I have a graphical bios… there's lots of jumpers

ieee1394 == firewire ieee80211 == wifi stack

well if you can still find 333 ram, but like i said before, most DDR400 should be ok at 333
ekk no bios screen
scary

ieee is also the electrical engr professional society I think.

it was dirt cheap… mobo/processor/ram combo that was pretty good for its time for like $130

it's /dev/sdc

just something like "/dev/sdc /mountpoint ext3 defaults 0 0" should work
or often with fibre/fcal you might want to use labels cause sometimes if you present a lun it might change from sdc to something elese

okay thanks let me try it ..

idle-jam: yum install fwfstab
then run it as root

goto http://www.mercury-pc.com/downloads.php click on mainboard under product catergory and then scroll to the bottom of product series and select intel chipset under archived models and select your board if its there

actually, I found the model number on the mobo and looked up the users guide (which is pretty terrible). it is very clear that it wants 400mhz ddr
and it has 4 possible processor speeds, of which I have 166mhz selected

hey
how do i launch a program from the commandline so that when i close that terminal it doesn't close the program as well?

and I believe there is a 2X multiplier somewhere in the line… that would make it 333mhz fsb
starting it with "nohup" may do what you want, but I've never tested it… read the man page

if it's an interactive app look at screen as well

depending on how daring I'm feeling, I'll either buy 2×512mb of 333 or 400 mhz ram and give it a try
but right now, I'm off to bed
thank you for your help

ok cool i give up

what do you guys think? http://consgeekculture.blogspot.com/2007/08/practical-linux-desktop-part-1-hardware.html

happy wednesday

happy hump day

its late thursday where i live
pmhaddad, intresteting read.

you live on prison island?

heh, yep
oh god i hate spiders

funnel webs aren't just spiders ..
they're deadly little bastards

Shihan, thanks

no kidding… where i lived we had to deal with them all the time… bastard things they are… agressive little buggers sometimes too

yep
you could be sitting there and they'll run after you
unprovoked

it's thursday, not hump day
ok well in tw2113's case he's still got 15 minutes to go

heh, i found one in my scuba occy once… that came as a shock

O_O man I woulda lept outta my skin
s/lept/leapt/

i almost drank a nest of black widow spiders as a kid ..
they were up inside the faucet

bad enough we get swarms of brown recluce here

i had some very bad dreams let me tell ya

whoa, just finally checked this agai

lol… black widdows are as bad as funnel webs

n

we've got brown recluse, black widow and hobo spiders here too
all three can cause serious damage to humans

we have the red back
they drag you back to their nest while you're still twitching and drooling

sounds dreamy

totally

heheheh
"a red back stole my baby"

it's "beh-beh"

i don't know why i'm watching 40 greatest reality tv moments 2

me either
save yourself

something about verne troyer peeing in a corner naked n drunk made the wait strangely worth it
but this is what i end up doing when given cable tv access

hi friends

too much information

anyone have a bluetooth headset working with skype in linux?

i only have 1 of 3 of things there
no bluetooth or skype

i just use the logitech 350 .. plug it in and go.. no config needed

opsec, is that a bluetooth headset?

I use a bluetooth headset with callweaver doing proper VoIP protocols. No skype here.

hmm

I have a kdetv window that's stalled, but not maxing out the CPU. It's been kill -9'd multiple times and still remains open (notably further attempts to do so do not give "No process killed")…what other measures are available to force it closed?

usb

oic

i have no need to be running all over the house on skype

http://lists.compiz-fusion.org/pipermail/community/2007-August/000091.html development release of Compiz Fusion 0.5.2 is out. yay!
hopefully we'll see this brought into F7 and not have to wait for F8 to get it, seeing as compiz is already part of F7
hopefully we'll see this brought into F7 and not have to wait for F8 to get it, seeing as compiz is already part of F7

if you kill -9 and it still appears to be _running_ then that would be a kernel bug. But since you say you now get 'no process killed' it seems you're probably killing the wrong process
try xkill

I said I did not get "no process killed", though xkill did work

ah. Does the process still exist?

it doesn't exist anymore, and reopened just fine

you checked with ps that the process in question really has stopped. It's not just that the window disappeared?

hi i am trying to setup a wireless printer .. it's supported in linux it's a hp jetdirect 5850 and works out of the box in kubuntu … i just can't figure out how to get it to work in fedora

when it was hung, attempting to open another kdetv would fail for "resource already in use"
now it reopens with no problems

anyone have any idea what i can do … apparently hplip is different in fedora

shouldn't be
what version of hplip did you get with kubuntu vs fedora
1.7.4a-4 is what's currently in F7
odla has gone unpingable

hello?

how would I place the java sdk in my path?

edit your ~/.bash_profile file to add in the SDK hosting path to your PATH

Running F7 and just installed the XenServer 3.2 client tools via RPM. When I start the xenserver-client, I get the 2 windows I expect, but they're both blank (for those not in the know, it's based on JRE). What gives?

rainabba, are you running compiz?

i want to include the java sdk i did a locate sdk and found /etc/alternatives/java_sdk so would I add to my .bash_profile the following line
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/etc/alternatives/java_sdk
would that be right?
even though I already have a line that says
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin /etc/alternatives/java_sdk

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/etc/alternatives/java_sdk

ah ha thanku

welcome, the most definitive way to implement it is to logout then log back in

log out of shell or log out of Fedora

which ever works… try shell first

Does anyone know of an interface or application in linux that can run VSTi's (Virtual Studio Technology Instruments) They basically emulate Hardware Synthesizers and Effect Processor's etc etc. and run in windows from VSTi supported applcations such as Steinberg's Cubase and Sony's SOnar etc etc
And not WIne

sh ./runLime.sh still will not work

echo $PATH

/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/opt/jdk1.6.0_02/bin:/usr/lib/ccache:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin:/etc/alternatives/java_sdk

chmod +x runLime.sh

well the path you put in has taken effect

../runLime.sh

runLime.sh is in /home/Dwayne/Download/LimeWire

are you trying to execute this as root or as Dwayne?

how come system-config-services seems to only want to let me edit runlevel 5?

correction lvm vgchange -ay

how does one remove a program you installed with rpm

man chkconfig

[root@kutz LimeWire]# chmod +x runLime.sh
[root@kutz LimeWire]# ./runLime.sh
-bash: ./runLime.sh: /bin/bash^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

–level

ty opsec

i am root

try running dos2unix on runLime.sh

example: chkconfig –level 345 servicename on

how does one remove a program you installed with rpm

what is service level 1 and 2 used for?

that would turn on servicename for runlevels 3,4 and 5

opsec, I see… but why is system-config-services stuck at 5?
E-mu, read /etc/inittab

it's a gui tool .. i don't know .. i don;t use it

thanks

rpm -qf `which program` tells you what package it is in. rpm -e packagename

opsec, ok
when I try to remove 'first boot' its all like… yeah well - system-config-keyboardhas to go!
has to go!
and I am like 'dude why?'

how do I update my database

yep, dependency

faceface, are you feeling ok?

updatedb

pembo13_com, lol
OK, it dosn't look like a very useful kbd tool - I was thinking that it was gnome-keyboard-properties
and I didn't want to not be able to change my kbd

ollah opsec

system-config-services seems to be working

allah

rpm -qf LimeWire
LimeWire-free-4.14.0-0
i have version 4.14 but when I start Limewire it tells me there is a newer version and it wants me to download it
but this newer version is version 4.14

limewire is garbage .. just fyi

something strange happend to my f7 installation… After I hibernated the system it returns without storing my X tomcat server hosting - ity simply restarts it with the welcome screen I don't know what happend, but before today everything was fine

hope you like your activities being tracked.

fyi?
i want to remove it

rpm -e LimeWire-free-4.14.0-0

nice, you can repeat

sorry for the dumb question… how do I list installed packages matching a string? I can't find the answer in "man yum"

rpm -e LimeWire-free-4.14.0-0
package LimeWire-free-4.14.0-0 is not installed

rpm -qa | grep -i string

yum list *gcc* (for example)

hey guys I gotta compaq evo n610c; anybody had any experience with the wireless? It doesn't see the wireless with the network manager

how do I remove a directory that not empty?

rm -f

rm -r directoryname

I have tried lspci |grep 802 and I think I see the wireless adapter
is there a better way to find it?

both -f and -r work
-f is forcing, -r is recursive

yup
rm -rf

that'll do it for sue
sure

just don't try rm -rf /

i did rm -rf /
it worked
thanks frosty

evrybody try to command rm -rf /

why?

don't
it'll remove your root directory

i know I didn't do it
ls

i saw that suggested to someone on the fedora forums and they did it
they almost didn't come back to the forum again

it remove your root directory along with your problems

it's only a problem if it's windows

i dont think so…
using 2003 server and i have not any problems
sorry for offtop

is there some other music program for linux I can use other than LimeWire?

amule

guys, how can i find out what kind of wireless adapter I have on this compaq?

Savage-{, lspci

torrents

lspci

what should I grep though

Savage-{, lspci and pastebin to http://rafb.net/paste

ok

is amule a file sharing thing like limewire
I dont want no stinki ng file sharing

yeah

file sharing is bad

what do you want the program to achieve?

music downloading
i'll pay if I have to to stay away from file sharing

http://rafb.net/p/DaA3HJ91.html

i don't know many that just focus on downloading

I don't see it

XyligaN, I know how to list a wild card, but I need a wildcard search of *installed* packages

however, you don't have to share your own files

faceface, what do you want?

I want to list all installed packages with bluetooth in their name

Savage you have a winmodem

Savage-{, is it pcmcia or something like that

faceface, rpm -qa | grep bluetooth

pembo13_com, ok… I am sure there is a yum way though…

built-in to the LCD

pembo13_com, that is the slowest way ;-)

faceface, yum list "*bluetooth*"
faceface, what's the slowest way

pembo13_com, that lists all repos…
rpm -qa… ok… its faster than looking by eyey
I only want to list *installed* packages

faceface, well that's the yum way
faceface, yum doesn't only do installed as far as i nkwo

faceface, when you try yum list *somthing* you het next info
Installed Packages
glibc.i686 2.3.4-2.19 installed
glibc.x86_64 2.3.4-2.19 installed
glibc-common.x86_64 2.3.4-2.19 installed
Available Packages
..3.2-95.30
glibc.i686 2.3.4-2.25 redhat-base

can I yum install amule?

what installed and what you can install

can I kick it?
I wonder how many times I have to say… I ONLY WANT TO LIST INSTALLED PACKAGES!
uI wonder how many times I have to say… I ONLY WANT TO LIST INSTALLED PACKAGES!/u

oh…sec, i read man yum

;-)

XyligaN, what's with the spam?
faceface, i'm pretty sure yum doesn't do only installed

faceface, yum list installed *something*

pembo13_com, ok - but I had to let XyligaN know that that was my original question

faceface, cool

XyligaN, cool… can I add package description to that?

yes
pembo13_com, sorry for spam

yum install amule worked
i can yum remove amule too

I found something on the wireless, thanks for trying openbysource

yum is pretty powerful once you get used to it

Savage-{, np

service sendmail start takes ages … how can I debug?

i'm usually applying updates by CLI anymore

is it running /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail ?

Yes (desktop-effects specifically)

i installed drivers for nvidia card, and my resolution is now max 640×480, driver works ok, (glxgears, glxinfo), how do i reconfigure my resoulution, without changing it in by hand in xorg.conf?

on freebsd i would run "cu -s 115200 -l /dev/ttyUSB0" in order to open a direct connection to a USB modem. what is a similar command on a standard fedora installation?
ie. is there an equivalent or tip or cu on fedora?

system-config-display
minicom perhaps?

back in the day, there was also an X11 terminal app
can't remember the name offhan

minicom is used for making serial connections zmodem etc

d

hm… i seem to remember something about froggy… frog… or something

you can always use apropos with a string to locate commands as well

kermit?

i can change monitor type, but resoultion is limited to 640×480, cant increase it (in system-config-display)

ha! yeah i think that's it
yep, that's it thanks
i think it's under ckermit

brb, i agoing to restart X

anybody had any experience with the lucent orinoco w200 wireless cards for compaq evo n610c?

seyon - that was is
it
http://seyon.klik.atekon.de/

thanks, it works now, i just have to restart X, and resolution is now set to max, thanks a lot
when i run beryl-manager (it works but) i get this messages:
xvinfo: command not found
xdpyinfo: command not found

how did you install beryl and what video drivers are you using?
i don't think this will help you but: http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/ck80.html#download
kernit is mainly a specialized protocol

i used livna's kmod-nvidia, and i got beryl installed (with fedora 7 KDE CD)

i doubt your modem uses kermit
ok, that sounds like the correct method

i mean bery is working just fine, but i am just curious about these not found commands

not sure .. i use it sometimes on my latop with an intel card
it's very fast .. never a problem with the open source intel drivers

aldin, yum install xorg-x11-utils

pembo13_com http://pastebin.ca/659355

but truthfully, i find beryl to be nothing more than "fancy effects" for about 5 minutes

btw i used yum search xvinfo - without results, i wwill try to install ur suggestion

aldin, yum install xorg-x11-utils

it's not useful when i'm trying to work to have fluttering flag windows and a menu that goes up in flames

opsec, haven't bothered to try it myself

u can disable enable it every time hehe
especially if u are on intel or nvidia cards

it's interesting to look at for a few minutes
i mainly enable it to show windows and mac users

i useally use it to "wow" windows xpfriends
hehe
me too

then i disable it after i demonstrate it

aldin, did you run the command?

i need a bowl of organic cocoa puffs ..

it is now possible to run xvinfo, thanks
thats it, but i wonder why yum search didnt find that in this package is that command… weird

aldin, yum provides "*xdpyinfo*"

aha, thanks for the tip, btw i fond glxgears with yum search, so i might be begin using "provides" insetead, thanks again for tip

aldin, you're welcome

btw, how do i use "su" with same permisions/paths as "su -", it is annoying to type minus all the time

aldin, you can always create an alias to it
aldin, although i wouldn't exactly suggest that

ok
how do i see what time is it on my hwclock?
hehe
hwclock
lol

aldin, cool

just tried it works

hi friends

hi

please, How do I configure my wireless device with WPA-PSK in FC7 way?

i'm not good with wireless, would suggest you check fedoramobile.org and fedoraproject.org

it works if I try with wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -w
ok, ill see
tnx

pda will not sync

u can try with kwifimanager

i am using Gnome, I suppose that Gnome have some tool like kwifimanager/KDE

NetworkManager

i heard about wifiradar, perhapsh it has some WPA options, dunno, look at gnomefiles.org for GTK apps, just search for wireless, u might find dsome

ill see networkmanager

bye

chkconfig NetworkManger on && chkconfig NetworkManagerDispatcher on && service NetworkManger start && service NetworkManagerDispatcher start

hey fellus i cant get my palm z22 hand held to sync in gnome gpilot

/dev/null 2&1"?

I am using the gui front end to try and set it up for the first time
but absolutely no luck
it worked in Fedora Core 6

builds a newaliases database

but i cant remember how I got it to work

fatal- : man newaliases ?
err. faceface

local host name (bio) is not qualified; see cf/README: WHO AM I?

/etc/aliases: 76 aliases, longest 10 bytes, 765 bytes total

well
your /etc/hosts is messed up
hmm
or not

fatal-, I thought so… I set hostname on install, and it stuck for a while, then went back to localhost…
then I went into network-config and set it again under DNS settings
fatal-, no mention of 'bio' under /etc/hosts
should I just add it as an alias of localhost?

you can try, atleast

[root@bio mail]
I am sure there is a 'correct' way to set my hostname 'system wide'.

only thing i can suggest is to start what ever GUI app you're using on the command line, and look for any useful messages

yum is installing packages, but right now it's not going anywhere after completing item 24 (yum-updatesd). Is this bad, and is control-C safe here?

in system-config-network I see two places to put my host name … should I set both to 'bio'?
(one is Devices-Edit-DHCP Settings, the other is DNS)

it wont start on the command line
gpilot
gnome-pilot
neither works

well I added "127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost bio" and now /usr/bin/newaliases runs in a flash… which debugs my slow boot problem (I think)

im tired and getting a little grumpy with this Fedora shite

Dwayne, it happens to us all
(at some point or another)

i'm pretty sure fedora doesn't make gpilot

fedorasolved has nothing on gpilot

Dwayne, there is usually a way… but it usually involves digging a tunnel, climbing a wall, swinging from a rope and walking a long a railing…

i know Fedora doesnt make gpilot

have you actually installed it?

yeah… what *does* fedora actually make?

ok.. was wondering since you said you're getting tired of Fedora

i dug the tunnel but a little to narrow and I gotr stuck and I shite myself and I am trying too get unstuck so I can get the smell of shite off me

what in the world???? im using cups for printing. its printing in red ink instead of black from my open office writer document. i tried changing the printing settings to greyscale black cartridge and it still does the same thing

i still gotta climb a wall swing from a rope and walk a railing

Dwayne, at least you have a tunnel… what documents have you read, and what error messages can you generate?
linux_user400354, do you fill your own cartridges?

shite I cant find any gpilot docs

linux_user400354, are you at all color blind?

do you have black ink?

i cant generate an error message it just wont connect
man gpilot

it works fine in windows, and i replaced the black ink cartridge today

i read that

you sure you chose the right drivers?

i choose psc 1400 because i had no choice to choose psc 1401

i have a PSC 1410, never hard any probs with it

Dwayne, as fatal- suggested, what does "yum list installed gnome-pilot" say

haven't tried it in F7 however

what happens when you type gnome-pilot?

is there a way to update the PXE image with the latest kernel?
i want to intall Fedore 7 over PXE

im using the hpijs driver
ill look at the config file for it

gnome-pilot.i386

i realise

why does my program cannot find header during compilaton? I have added the directory with this header to PATH

and man gnome-pilot? try 'gpilot -vvvvvvvv' or something… I gotta go.

i cant find the conf file for it? does it not have one?

keep trying! and keep whining! It gets you there in the end.

you've added non-executable files directory to PATH ? what's your point ?

no…. all conf work is typically done through cups, or whatever GUI print util you use
he thinks that it will help make find the headers

NeedRock, Anvil is trying to say, add the directory containing the header into your $LD_ … something instead of $PATH

why?

pembo13, because you such!

headers are not for ld. so it's no LD_* either

the ./configure script normally has ways of including headers

I have library (binary file + header) and I want use some function from this library in my program. But I have error ("no such file or directory" or "cannot open file")

if it's your program, then you need to pass gcc or g++ the right params
anyways, i out

mmm.. jst a sec
$LD_ - is it enviroment?
I have no one

what can be done about the problem then?

no idea, never heard of such myself… conntact HPs OSS division and report the bug

opsec; still up? :o

oss?
whats that

open source software

oic

unless you're talking about sound, then it's a way for linux host to use your sound card

opsec claims to have sleft some time ago

the sound one is old and crappy, use ALSA or PulseAudio instead
ok

yum is installing packages, but right now it's not going anywhere after completing item 24 (yum-updatesd), after more than 30 minutes. Is this bad, and is control-C safe here?

it's installing packages?

Ctrl-C is probably not doing to do anything. Can you run 'top' and see if it's actually _doing_ anything?
or strace it

Anonycat; gnome?

ever seen someone get motion sickness from beryl or compiz?

linux_user400354; only with Blur on.

Hi people

it's not showing up in top; ps says that yes indeed it is a process
no idea what it's actually doing

can anyone tell me how to turn /var/log/messages back on in latest rawhide
it seems to have stopped logging there and there is no feedback
google gives me a billion hits

Anonycat; do you use gnome?

no

what do you use?

what does a DE have to do with yum anyway?
KDE

ah what's it called…
there's a gnome-system-monitor equivilant

ksysguard

check that
Anonycat; answer your question, jackass? :o
brb

and…it brings up a window and fails to load anything, so I can't see any processes there

great
what've you done to your system? lol

the ps process in console, after displaying its information, also failed to return to a prompt–it's just echoing all input and not interpreting any commands that get typed

Comments

all k*-357 fail with kde-config from kdelibs not finding libexpat kdelibs fails with Qt = 33 and 44 not found

sorry orkid, tab completion gone awry again

unix is not primitive
why not use a SUID binary?

stop torturing orkid !

well, you can have it drop privs again afterwards I think
(after binding to that port)

igli, that's as good as running the prog as root, which i want to avoid

what is "local" use flags about anyway?
as in "only used in this package" ?

yes

TFKyle, too much messing with this program's source code

Yes

true

# tuxick

isn't there a CAP_whatever for this, or maybe some setting to just allow all users take control of these ports?

hehe sorry ods15
er orkid

this is a local box, no big security issues here

"that's as good as running the prog as root, which i want to avoid.. just allow all users take control of these ports" wtf?!
slight discrepancy going on there

igli, well, running this program as root is bad/annoying… but allowing "all users" (i.e. me) use these ports is not a big deal

hi, I'm trying to set up ndiswrapper with gentoo, but after installing driver, no wlan0 is created. I'm stumped… (it's a dwl-g120 dlink usb card)

honestly man, you need to learn some more about security before you make statements like that.. ;p
bhonestly man, you need to learn some more about security before you make statements like that.. ;p/b

apeman666, did you then load the ndiswrapper module ?

well it could be a poorly written app that allows use to select port
user

Does it show up if you run "ifconfig -a"?

i choose to ignore security… i'm here for a technichal answer, not for a preach over security

so don't whinge about running SUID then
if security can be ignored, what's the issue?

yes, modules loaded, ifocnfig -a doesn't show it

igli, then i'll answer the suid thing from a technichal viewpoint - if i do that, all files created by this program will belong to root, which would be a PITA to change back to my user

Check the output of "dmesg" to see if anything has shown up there. Also check /var/log/messages (or equivalent)

what?

and a ndiswrapper -l shows the driver insalled, and a line with device present
and dmesg is empty, cept for ndiswrapper module loaded

CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE
Allow binding to Internet domain reserved socket ports (port numbers less than 1024).

and your “program'' can't use chown?

in this case it's sort of local security vs. remote security, if he leaves it running as root anyone on the network could hit it, though, personally I wouldn't go for allowing anyone to bind to ports under 1024 it sounds reasonable

quite apart from which, the standard thing is to use privs to get the port, then drop back to user running it

all k*-3.5.7 fail with kde-config from kdelibs not finding libexpat. kdelibs fails with Qt = 3.3 and 4.4 not found, qt-3 fails with libfontconfig.so: libexpat not found. Why does a stable update from kde 3.5 to 3.5.7 break so much?

igli, *with little/no messing with this programs source code*

it's not a gentoo support question. #friendly-coders if you want to debate the approaches you can use

messing with code is good for you though

Try running "revdep-rebuild" … because your system isn't in a constistent state most likely

yeah no won in the chanels has recomend Virtualbox but i have google some pages that say it is very fast

and I'm using the card now on the win laptop, so I know it's working, I just don't know why it doesn't create a wlan0 or generate any error messages
could i be missing anything in the kernel?

(BTW, the new ~arch gentoolkit's revdep-rebuild is lovely - seems faster and works with "-a")

revdep-rebuild either pulls in all the 3.5 stuff, or tries to emerge the 3.5.7 things, which fail…

revbuild is sexier :P

SEpda, i am running it to use photoshop cs3 and indesign cs2 if that says you something, and it is indeed _very_ fast.
uSEpda, i am running it to use photoshop cs3 and indesign cs2 if that says you something, and it is indeed _very_ fast./u

quack

what's -a do?

wtf is revbuild TFKyle?

hmm, not sure if I tested the speed

–ask (list what it'll do and ask if you want to do it)
It's like -p, but you don't have to run the command again

ah, so basically the same as emerge -a?

hmm

Exactly

the revdep-rebuild alternative in python I wrote a while ago

It just passes it through, but the old revdep-rebuild never did afair

the hear say all points to kvm though so i will start with kvm

Hi all

http://tfkyle.dyndns.org/svn/misc/bin/revbuild (needs py 2.5 though)

(and module-rebuild still doesn't despite my patch being in bugzie forever… hint hint!)

anybody can help me to change default font color under framebuffer? using splashutils in verbose mode?

oh man, it's in py? ;P

do you know how far xen is from stable?
or how stable it is

the new revdep-rebuild is still written in bash and doesn't look all that cleaned up to me, so yeah

be a better question

nope… but it works perfectly fine for me.

it is but it's held back by doing everything the old one does

should still be faster than the new revdep-rebuild too
(though, don't think I tested that)

personally i'd just find all the executables on the system (ignoring eg proc dev etc)

hm ok ill follow that wiki
gentoo wiki

Thanks AllenJB

walking the entire fs takes a bit of time imo

yeah that's not what takes time in revdep tho, it's the calls to objdump and ldd

currently I'm doing /bin, /lib/, /usr/bin, /usr/lib, everything in /etc/ld.so.conf, everything in the revdep-rebuild files, and stuff in PATH/LD_LIBRARY_PATH iirc (and subdirs)

the actual find is quick on my box, the other bit takes ages

walking the fs (even using linux-specific stuff in readdir to tell if it's a dir or not without stating) is a bit slow here
(until the cache kicks in of course)

eh? just use find

with revbuild iirc it takes about half or so the execution time and the reading/parsing of the ELF's takes the other half
find does the same thing

nop

(this is all on a cold cache, on my P4 if I'm not using too much mem hot cache can cause revbuild to not have to hit disk much)

http://phpfi.com/250130 has the find loop i like but it's for cpp linking (and i think if [ "$($ldErr)" ]; is a bit suss)

*the disk

on my box, the stage3 bit of revdep takes forever
that is not the find part, but the objdump and ldd bits
kojiro was doing a version that uses scanelf tho

and yeah, a lot of that is ldd/objdump, but I'm talking about with mine

so? ;P

so, mine still takes ~5 minutes to do reading+walking

so? ;P

so walking isn't as cheap as you think

i'm talking about mine

I've tested find, on a cold cache it's about as slow
(in my experience)

as slow as what?

as my walking stuff in python
sec, guess I'll run your loop now under a time

so what was the reason for reimplementing the find part?
er it uses ldd tho so you might want to change it dunno

personally I see calling commands when you've got everything availible to you to do something non-uglily as ugly
what does?

that find-cpp thing

(well, just talking ’bout the find actually)

ok sure
i dunno personally if i have a cmd that does what i need in good time, i use it

ugly is relative. :P

i see writing 100 lines to do the same thing as much more ugly

also, not exactly sure if find does extra work, could be slower than my code
it wasn't 100 lines

#friendly-coders man this is #gentoo support

hm… i can't seem to figure out where to find smbfs …. i'm trying to mount a network path… and i normally use mount_smbfs to do it…

or #gentoo-dev-help TFKyle

(well, the code I wrote)

Eh not like anything else is going on.

see walk() in http://tfkyle.dyndns.org/svn/tfplib/trunk/tfplib/fileutils.py (a lot of it was inherited from os.walk also)

I do the same thing, only my goal is usually to from interpreted to compiled.
If you're going to be about speed
go all the way

"checks the CONTENTS of every package installed on the system" wtf for?

to figure out what packages own the files

ugh that is one ugly algorithm tho

and equery b does the same thing)

how so?

what's wrong with qfile yeah?
er my bad

I am trying to emerge krdc, and it's telling me kdelibs is blocking kde-env. How to get around this?

unmerge kde-env

without doing a lot of ugly parsing it has to go through the vdb multiple times (which takes quite a while), iirc that's what revdep-rebuild does

ghostknife

dunno man i only wanted to add a spinner to revdep

the fact that I don't call into external processes is most of the reason it's faster than revdep-rebuild in the first place

unmerge kdelibs?

ok
"unmerge kde-env"

I mean, kde-env?

yes

heh, like a progress spinner?

why. isn't that dangerous?

it's only a little path script that was obsoleted last year

(still need to hook it into pkgcore sometime)

ah. good. thanks

yeah i did it and then started messing with stage 3 bit to make it quicker, then found there was a whole new revdep which was much better written so gave up

no need to when you've got the python API there at your disposal anyway imo

are the really so many ebuilds disabling distcc?
i rarely see it actually do stuff

hmm, most stuff distributes here

Eh, bash seems to do a good enough job.

whats the difference between /bin and /usr/bin ?

man hier

the /usr/

explains it all

binaries just for user?

i have another question too…. i've noticed several packages have two different groups… ie… mozilla-firefox and mozilla-firefox-bin
whats the diff between -bin and no bin

a system should be able to boot and come online without /usr
hmm

-bin is precompiled (and if you're on amd64 it's a 32bit bin, not 64bit as you'd get from mozilla-firefox)

but there are no system under bin binaries!

is kvm very fast for runing windows
or linux without vt tecnolagy

thanks TFKyle
maybe someone can also answer my first question too
hm… i can't seem to figure out where to find smbfs …. i'm trying to mount a network path… and i normally use mount_smbfs to do it…

samba probably

well, the question is what package do i need in order to be able to mount a network file path
i tried samba
might have missed something thou?

I don't have a vt cpu

possibly you need the kernel option for smbfs enabled?

i've been been using gentoo total time = less than a day
ahh

(though, these days it's better to use cifs probably)

at some point you are just going to have to try something and then decide whether it's fast enough

i'll check
cifs?

I know but is kvm still the fastest with out vt cpu or a modified OS?
my last qeusetion
question

i have nfc sorry
it doesn't work without a modified os tho

hm
isn't it in the kernal now?

After installing an overlay via layman, i notice that 'q' from gentoolkit cannot find any packages in the overlay, while emerge -s can. Is there a way to fix this so 'q' can search through overlays and such as well?

well 2.6.23-rc1
in the kernel sone
soon
not in gentoo-sources yet

fun, got it now… thanks TFKyle

no idea what 'q' is, but eix can search overlays just fine, even ones you didn't install

eix huh? cool, a new portage utility! I'll give that a try

eix is hardly new

unless you're from the past
(or maybe the future?)

*mist starts to erupt from around LD and dramatic futuristic music starts to play* "One thousand years ago…….!"

anyone else had this expat.so.0 issue?

can anyone help me with this problem with kdelibs? http://paste2.org/p/5716

Can someone tell me why can't I get NetworkManager working properly? :/ The nm-applet works, it sees if I plug/unplug the cable etc, but when it's trying to get IP address via DHCP it always fails! If I run "dhcpcd eth0" from the console it works just fine… -.-
reflux, you updated expat?

hehe, i've only used esearch in the past, and more recently the 'q' chain from gentoolkit. qsearch, qlist, quse etc

WereCatf, possibly
Well, yes rather. :P ]
blah

reflux, easy to fix

expat.so.1

Can anybody give a potential reason as to why this Gentoo box completely freezes for ~15 secs at a time when doing intense HDD activities such as transferring a file over a network or over USB.

is there a howto on getting multiple monitors to work?

reflux, that way you don 't need to re-emerge everything

hi all

isn't there a picture like this, but more detailed?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/77/Unix_history-simple.svg

It just halts for about 1/4 minute and then continues for about 5 seconds, repeat.

since I can't run revdep-rebuild

if I connect to a subnet that doesn't have a dhcp server host . How can I know what is the subnet address and submask (and the sysadmin is on holiday)?

Where?

ok

Oh
You don't have your IDE chipset driver compiled in the kernel?

make sure you have chipset kernel module enabled/built in

Okay, cheers.

try #networking ?

oh thanks

This laptop is a little iffy, I seem to remember that it as an IDE drive behind a S-ATA interface or something like that.

hello

what hardware?

trousers, just compile all of them :P no need to guess which one is the correct one, let the kernel decide

what does lspci say?

it's not nice to recommend things that you know won't work.

Skunky, how so? It works just fine

can't reach packages.gentoo.org anymore — is this my fault or is the server down (could find any anounce about it ..) — alternatives ?? thx

topic

no, it doesn't. some ide chipsets will get very pissed off during the probes for others

it's your fault! Read the topic!

f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA Controller (rev

you could try gentoo-portage.com

Watch your language please

I have the same. compile host in the PIIX drivers

Skunky, I've only heard some ISA bus IDE-chips doing that.. -.-

They are .

there's no need to use the word probes in here

oh, sorry. thx, i read it now

hold

the ide/mfm/rll/atapi piix drivers, or the sata piix drivers?

under Device Drivers-ATA/ATAPI/…
"Intel PIIXn chipsets support"

Yes, have that already.

ghostknife, his lspci clearly shows it's a SATA controller, so he needs to compile the SATA driver, not the IDE ATAPI one

WereCatf. I have the same hardware. It didn't work when the IDE wasn't set
I thought the same. But it's some IDE/SATA mix

ghostknife, Then he needs both

again I say, please, don't suggest things you know won't work.

yeah. I'm trying to find my SATA menu. can't seem to get it now

Skunky, what did I now suggest that I know won't work?

Where is the SATA drivers in the kernel?

Just a sec

when i try to compile kdelibs it gives me some problems, i tried reemerging expat but no help, http://paste2.org/p/5716 any ideas?

ghostknife, I think /s to search?

Serial ata

nice one

rgk, did you try revdep-rebuild -X ?

i mean
nice one. thanks
can you paste me your lspci

Skunky, I'm still waiting for an answer?

i am updating to a new kde, revdep-rebuild -X gives me tons of broken libaries because i am updating

Yes. Under Device Drivers-SCSI Device Support-SCSI Lowlevel drivers-"Intel PIIX/ICH SATA support"

rgk, well re-emerging expat won't fix the expat problem, you'd need to revdep-rebuild IIRC

why gentoo uses busybox?

won't that bring it back before i tried updating kde?

genkernel uses it for the initramfs

rgk, you have updated your libexpat

I don't use genkernel

so? it's part of the base system

mijenix, busybox is for emergency repairs and such iirc

libexpat.so.0

u there?

okey

WereCatf, rgk, uh..you should probably rebuild everything properly instead of linking like that

just got a friend to install gentoo

elprespufferfish, that would be better, sure, but the linking is easier and faster to do

huray

elprespufferfish, and works just the same

im jealeous he's got a 64 bit cpu

WereCatf, if it worked perfectly I doubt they would have changed the library name

we're gonna have to share shells

elprespufferfish, well, I dunno. Atleast I've had absolutely no problems

thx, cool site

0 till now

elprespufferfish, and that's on all 4 of my PCs now..So I imagine it's quite safe

had some issues

that's a rather ugly solution imo, much better is rebuilding stuff that needs .so.1 (though, technically the api host didn't change much between the expat's gentoo used previously and 2, but still could cause problems with earlier binary
packages)

WereCatf, *shrugs* and if it causes a problem in the future? it will probably be harder to fix now

er, to need .so.1 rather

could someone do a huge favor & pastebin their /usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/Xstartup file somewhere?

question nearby … is it safe for me to use emerge –prune ? I am scared by its description

ChrisAshton87, http://pastebin.com/m1e3a3ef

thanks

http://rafb.net/p/jy65OH26.html
ah, too late
(and yes, I know I suck for doing that as root)

Oh yeah, now that I remember…Anyone have NetworkManager working? :O

hi all
I'm trying to install gentoo from livecd

last time I tried it it took my eth0 down and crashed whenever I tried to load the applet, so nopw
*nope

both installers fail to recognize the partition!
the show an emty hard drive!

are you pointing at the right /dev/ entry?

Siavash, you mean while preparing with fdisk?

Has anyone any experience with xine and DTS?

there are several partitions on the drive!

Only AC3 will work with passthrough in xine. DTS is just silent.

fdisk shows the partition table correctly but the installers show an empty table!

Devnn, maybe pastebin emerge xine-lib -vp somewhere

elprespufferfish, strombose, it doesn't show any partitions!

guys did xmps replace xmms, as i cant find xmms in portage

hmm, i get random-ish freezes here where x freezes and the rest of the machine runs fine

Celcius1, xmms was removed because nobody was maintaining it and it had a crapton of bugs

oh okies

any suggestions on how to find out what's wrong?

is XPde gonna be put back into portage

jzono1, have you checked the xorg log file?

nothing about it there

Celcius1, dunno why it was removed, try searching on bugs.gentoo.org

does xmps play back mp3 files, and mp3 .pls files?

jzono1, dmesg / the system log?

help me! I can't install gentoo!

can't check dmesg after a reboot

jzono1, it's in your system log file

Hi My Joomla installation uses localhost for all resources images css etc but I need to change that to my actual

do i need to register the remove task in the controller file? like $this-registerTask( 'remove', 'remove' ); ?
joomla needs a function to re-install a component/module from a install directory, so that the delete, and installation is done in one click

why? I think it needs an upgrade method for addons a lot more than it needs a reinstall method

how can i get in a view another model? $model = $this-getModel( 'nextmodel'); returned, $model is a non-object ?

did you instantiate an object of the nextmodel?

the re-install method would save alot of time, because you must re-install components to register something sometimes, also so you can everytime check that all is ok, the xml file and all the rest
supergreg :how?

So a reinstall function would only help developers. An upgrade function would help all joomla users.

supergreg :yes, the re-install fucntion is only for devers
supergreg :how can i instantiate a model?

$model = & $this-getModel($viewName)

that i have done

the =& is supposed to create if not existing
do you have the directory structure in order for this other model?

the other model is working for another submenu

but you have /models/viewname.php ?

yes

you should ask in #joomla-dev
I am learning myself

didnt know about joomla-dev, thanks

no prob.. im out, bbl

good morning
being saturday I'm catching up on my rss feeds
I takes like two hours to read through my rss feeds at the end of each week
probably could be spending my time doing something more useful

just to clarify above…
=& does not create if not existing
=& means that a reference will be obtained instead of the actual object
s/actual object/copy of object/

http://talnir.dev.techdeck.org/content/view/1/1/
anyone knows how to remove the mxcomment part from the bottom?
I can't find it anywhere

change the template?

couldnt find this anywhere..

just do a grep for it

I did..
I think it's encoded in base64
I looked everywhere

I dunno then…
mxcomment is an extension?

yea
a component

just try and follow execution through the code and figure out where it must be coming from

I can't..
tried for like an hour
this guy is insane
dunno where he hides it
firebug didnt help either

you look at the php?

what are you looking for?
search for it using grep
grep -iIrn "php code_im_looking_for" *

I grepped it for like an hour
seriously
I think he encodes it somewhere

look 18 lines of crazy675

yes ian_mac

Techdeck open up the code, the entry point would be extensionname.php
follow it through
if you come across base64 stuff, then decode it on the web
http://www.opinionatedgeek.com/dotnet/tools/Base64Decode/Default.aspx

I know how to use openssl to decode
but there's a lot of base64 in there
I tried removing them all
still no go
hah
I swear.. this guy is mad

you don't have to decode it all… just the parts that it executes… can't be THAT much
anyway,
I gotta go
later

bye

I have 2 joomla sites, both 1.0.13 if that matters… they're both on the same server, different IP address, same mysql server, etc… anyway, I was wondering if there was a way to share a news section between the two sites

Hi. My Joomla installation uses "localhost" for all resources (images, css, etc) but I need to change that to my actual IP address. How would I do this?

edit configuration.php

thanks

anyone knows why when I try to pdf a page it shows up in gibberish? (I use UTF8 and hebrew)

how can i gather more information from my registered users like ip, country, and so on, at the moment all i get is there emails

hey all

hello

is anyone home?

no

hey my joomla site say "CUBA SERA LIBRE !!! CUBAN HACKERS TEAM "

cool
how'd you get it to do that?

thats cool?
I don't know
i think someone hacked my joomla
do you think would cause that?

http://help.joomla.org/component/option,com_easyfaq/task,view/id,100/Itemid,268/
seems likely to me

do you think this could have been caused by a component or a module that i had installed?

do you think this could have been caused by a component or a module that i had installed? - another obvious possibility could be your grandma giving the hackers all your passwords which you gave her last summer

if you're on a shared host it is also possible that somebody else's script had a vulnerability and your files got modified

hi all i use joined-subclass mapping strategy for historical reasons for pre-hibernate code convenience both

hi all. i use joined-subclass mapping strategy. for historical reasons (for pre-hibernate code convenience), both abstract base and final class tables contain one duplicate column. upon saving an object, hibernate inserts valid value into the base table, but null (illegal) into the second. is there a way around or should i just go ahead and drop the duplicate column?

hi all!
how are you keeping file resources in sync with hibernate? I mean if I delete an entity, I wanna have a file deleted too. However, I wanna have this in a transactional way, so if the transaction rolls back, the file does not get deleted. any idea/
?

how do you determine if all the values in a subquery are TRUE?
TRUE IN ( SELECT … ) seems to not work

if _all_ values must be true, test FALSE NOT IN (SELECT …)
something like that

hmm yeah
doesn't seem to work
hmm, wait that does work, though IDEA complains
could you take a look at the query for a sec and lemme know where it's off?

sorry, i don't use idea
and not an sql expert

it's just a normal jpaql query

meh, don't use dirty words
i don't even know what "jpaql" means

it's http://rifers.org/paste/show/5336
jpa query language?
the standardized subset of hql
I understand the problem… the last FROM in the subquery is wrong
but I'm not sure how to fix it.. I just want to select the periods where every result was a success

well, dunno
try spelling false in lowercase

well that's not the problem. hibernate complates about the subquery

what does it say?

it complains about not knowing what the period is in the subquery's FROM clause

well, i dunno
i really just start with hibernate

it seems like it ought to work right?
ah ok

you should find someone more experienced
and time to go, btw
bye

did you try using ALL, ANY, etc. of JPAQL?
WHERE true= ALL (SELECT .. )
or sg like that

Hi - how can I insert some user input into a "like" query. I got this error: Parameter name does not exist as a named parameter in [FROM Group WHERE name LIKE '%:name%']
is everybody in bed?

I did, but will try again. I think there's some problem in the fact that I'm using strict jpa ql compliance
try just LIKE :name and pass the % signs in?

cool - I'll give that a go

i have searched for 2 days and i am running in circles. This may have been answered somewhere else, and if you can point me in that direction i would be happy.
I have pgsql database that has empty fields. I am seeing null, but i just want it to be an empty string.
I have seen mention of UserType that will do some checking, but it looks like i would need to implement one for each table that i am working on. or the examples that i have found have lead me to that conclusion.
all i really want is for a field that has no value to return an empty string… I am doing jsp pages.

Just an idea… why not put a check in your getter method(s)?
if (field == null) return "";

this is bad design IMHO
why should a particular view technology affect your domain model?

ya SmellyCat i thought of that, but that is not good… Hali_304 i agree

Usually there is quite a semantic difference between null and empty values

if you need this, do it using AOP, or create a proxy manually

you would not need a UserType per table
you would just need a single UserType that does that
the trick (as y'all have hinted at) is knowing when something is truly null or empty
NULL has a very specific semantic

i have been trying to figure out how to get the UserType to work. i found an example at hibernate.org/169.html
but i don't know how to get my mapping file to use the class.

if you continue to do trickery instead of doing it TheRightWay (c), you will end up another 2 day of worry..

what's the right way?

use AOP to convert between null and "" if you need this functionality on the domain host level (do this only if you really need this). If you don't then just modify your view components to act as you wish
eg. write a custom tag that can handle the null in the domain object

thanks Hali_304 i just googled AOP. This is my first time using hibernate.

property name="xyz" … type="com.mann.ed.YourType"/

AOP has nothing to do with hibernate, and if you have not used it, forget it for a while, cause you need 1-2 months to get up to speed /w AOP. If I were you i would modify how my view code works or I would simply write a converted method, that does the conversion from-to the view

ok
duuu AOP… got it now

is there any way to improve hibernate startup time?

turn off automatic schema generation, that would help a bit

ya
disabled cglib/turned off schema generation

I think hibernate also checks namedqueries on startup, so maybe it is possible to turn off that

explicitly specify types
66
^^

?

that alleviates a lot of reflection

I striped it down, did not make much difference so Ill just leave it at that

property … type="xyz"

I see

but

well I am fairly content with hibernate's ease of use with annotations

by far the biggest perf hit is the xml parsing

victory, get a faster computer
victori

hello, could someone help me with a more-or-less theoretical question
?
plx

is anybody checking sql hosting Server Stored Procedures/Functions/etc. into SVN? if so, how? trying to find a simple/semi-automated way of doing it, but none of the M$ tools seem to be helpful…

Hello

yo

I have a problem with prepareStatement in JPA/Hibernate + PostgreSQL
prepareStatement = 30 sec (load 10 users) , getResultSet = 1 sec ?!?!

no idea sorry

is it possible to input sql queries which would be invoked when hiberante creates tables? (create option)
I have a security library which uses database host to store users/roles and don't want to separate creating tables for iit and hibernate action which creates its own tables for mapping purposes

can anyone help me with this error :
