Hey Im a Drupal newbie but an experienced programmer-sysadmin Has anybody read Pro Drupal Development by John

damn

eyach crud

chx/pwolanin: okay, so my bad. gotta use access callback instead then, thanks

I noticed there is no real "what is Drupal?" session at froscon
I submitted one, but it was not accepted

that's strange
did they say, why?

no
I submitted four presentations
of which "Was ist Drupal?" and "Lokalisierung für Drupal" were rejected

well they probably thought you shouldn't be runnign the whole conference….

I wouldn't have done four sessions anyway

array(true) ?

i am not the one who want to ask at this moment
just TRUE
but finding patience to answer stupid questions is incredible hard atm

sorry to hear about the job mate.

the idea at conferences is that you only propose talks you plan to give. :p
bthe idea at conferences is that you only propose talks you plan to give. :p/b

it's not the job — it's the immigration that further delayed.

killes:

sorry

I would have done three out of four, doesn't matter which three

what causes a 403 error on autocomplete text field when i pass it a whitespace character?

heh, i got that earlier too. filed a bug, no clue about js

killes, who would be the correct person to contact about getting a directory nuked from CVS after it was mistakenly committed?

http://drupal.org/node/159762… add to that if you find out.

sure by that's the admin-by-task vs. admin-by-module

All menu based admin pages break…

yes, so one question is whether admin-by-module should be constructed differently

Thanks. Not sure how soon I can play with it. My computer time is pretty iffy these days

Got it on my dev site, but the newborn is starting to fuss so that's it for now. Thanks

merlinofchaos did you *just* code that?
you did a no-no: you called form_builder :o

do not be so fast.
sometimes it's necessary though MUCH less in 5 than in 4.7 (and none at all in 6)

well you said that there was no calling frm_builder in D5
oh
:O
:P

night

hey UnConeD

lo

yea, that's today's work.

wow!
you are a fast coder!

"title-delete")),

I think you still need to call form_builder to get form information when building another part of your form relies on information from the user.

no link

i didn't bother with degradeability
If you've got no javascript right now this UI won't work

Hey, I'm a Drupal newbie, but an experienced programmer/sysadmin. Has anybody read "Pro Drupal Development" by John VanDyk & Matt Westgate? Is it worth my while to grab a copy, or should I just stick with the on-line documentation?

read it

Everyone should have a copy
heh

by all means

definitely read it

It's the best Drupal services coding resource available.
Well, no. api.drupal.org is
Pro Drupal Development is the next best resource available (and the one you want first)

that's a reference… book is better to learn.

Well, you're likely to get learned quicker than just memorizing the api docs :P
It's a great book, really.

Which is why you want PDD first

i am, of course , seriously biased towards the book…

Cool, I'll go grab a copy. I also have two web designers here to are scared of the on-line Drupal handbook — any help for them?

web designers who are scared of drupal are often more cooperative after a cold shover

is it just me or devel list stopped working

shower, even

They're mostly going to be designing themes from Photoshop files.

Lullabot has great training courses

Dojo lesson on that?

what took so long?

hmm themes from photoshop files
i always wondered how come we don't have a psd breakdown theme

that'd take long for me

so you can just edit it and tie all the slices

I am a slow typer
I mean the the code is easy

Hi! Are you around?

There isn't much in there that I haven't done somewhere else already. Some of the javascript is kind of unique.

but I am not so fast
a typing

BTW, the UI I put in for that is something we should do on poll.module

Ok. Turning on the shower. keeping it cold. Thanks, folks.

I bet we could squeeze a variant of it in as a UI improvement
But it needs the full degradability, and also re-ordering (which this UI doesn't need)
bBut it needs the full degradability, and also re-ordering (which this UI doesn't need)/b

Wasn't there a dojo lesson on turning psd's into themes?

richv, web designers should learn one template engine (phptemplate usually a good choice)

mine!
it was horrible

heh

richv, and then just play around and get the hang of it

quicksketch!!

hi there

The dojo is still a good resource. http://drupaldojo.com

richv, because while theming "'base drupal" from photoshop is near trivial, the real magic is in full xhtml/css compliant themeing for more complex dynamic implementations

ahh, yes, http://drupaldojo.com/node/63

so when can you do a dojo lesson?

seen walkah?

walkah was last seen in #drupal 17 hours 40 min ago saying ''.

noooooooooo

is anyone having trouble with drupal cvs? i can't update/commit any of my repos

Same here

crap :P

what is the lesson about?

do you know when you can do a lesson at the dojo?

what are you looking for? ajaxy kind of stuff still?

Squidster wasn't sure
yup
I mean not for me :P I can do ajax and I can teach too

i'd like to wait until my second ahah patch gets in before a lesson
haah
yeah i know

but I've heard others want to you
and josh_k is teaching a lesson about it to my dismay :P I wanted to do that

pong

we could team up!

Do you know of any issues with cvs.drupal.org right now?

I want to!

Hmm, mailing lists and cvs down? drupal3 falldowngoboom?

what's your lesson on?

Or is it just another "cvs pserver passfile got eaten by gremlins" again?

damn those gremlins

no, I was about to upgrade viewvc, but I haven't touched the actual cvs directory yet

http://d5.logrus.com/admin/settings/user-titles
Ok. A bunch of us seem to be unable to do anything with CVS. I get a weird error, too:
bOk. A bunch of us seem to be unable to do anything with CVS. I get a weird error, too:/b

When I type 'cvs up'

Did someone upgrade cvs?

some more jquery stuff

Yah, I have them both playing with the Zen template, using PHPTemplate; the only reason for that is 'cuz I read about it in the handbook.

dude come on

how to make you code more portable

you need to hide("slow")

avoid insanity

thats the way to go

etc

not just ajax?

I need to hit myself in the head with a hammer too

that, and regular cold showers
to wash all the dreamweaver nightmares away.

Actually for that one, hide(slow) might work.

also

i think if josh_k is doing jQuery our lessons will be quite compatible

I mean how to make your jquery more portable

the img doesn't show up on newly created titles

since you don't actually need to do any javascript to do jQuery AHAH in D6

so stuff like today's ajax/ahah question

only Remove this title

It doesn't? Hmm. Oh I know why

anyway, back to work for me

I'm getting broken image too
Analyzing…

Probably an error when I renamed the module.

ok, figued it out

Oh no, I'm a dumbass and harcoded the path.
That was fast!

img src="/sites/all/modules/custom/user_titles/delete.gif" a

Yea I'll have to send the path in as a setting.

usually I send base_path as well as path_to_module

merlinofchaos - Works good but the theme changes may be daunting to some. The more I think on it, though, the more I think it makes sense for me to try and do something based on userpoints… Having user points on the site and then having titles based on something else is likely to confuse
people. I may have a look at your code, though, to steal the UI.

try again now. there was an upgrade by me, but it didn't change the version of cvs, just a patch revision from the distro. Looks like they changed the installer to have a new useflag, `server'.

That makes total sense.
cvs up now works.
Yay!

three cheers for emsearcy!

hip hip horray!

thanks for getting my back

:P
so do you have a date for the lesson?

um, no sorry i really want to get the next ahah patch in first
and who knows when that will happen

sure

i really want to do the lesson though

where can I see an example of AHAH in core?

right now, not much
upload.module is it

Do a shift refresh, the publish your images online should be fixed.

but there are patches for poll module and the blocks page

cool
have a URL?

Oh there's a patch for poll.module already?

And it turned into an effort vs reward

$('tr').each(function(i, n) { $(this).removeClass('even').removeClass('odd'); if(i % 2) { $(this).addClass('odd') } else { $(this).addClass('even') } });

nah

Ahh. Darn, I was hoping the poll.module patch would work more like my little UI here.
It doesn't use AJAX at all, though.

what interface?

$('tr').removeClass('even').removeClass('odd').filter(':even').addClass('even').end().filter(':odd').addClass('odd'); ?

Or AHA as the case may be
http://d5.logrus.com/admin/settings/user-titles

pong

I'm not flipping all of them, just after where I added.

oo that's fun

Then again, it might be cleaner and a lot more bugproof to just nuke zebra and reapply the whole thing…

That's pretty much what dmitrig01's code does

Mine does it faster :P

Oh well actually I"m using yours anyhow.
I saw dmitrig01 link it later, didn't realize it was the same.
….but it's not quite working.

cause I don't want to get every table, just mine

And for some reason it seems like it's not applying.

iodd
try my version of it
$('tr').each(function(i, n) { $(this).removeClass('even').removeClass('odd'); if(i % 2) { $(this).addClass('odd') } else { $(this).addClass('even') } });

did. Same problem. Lemme try again.

Try stopping after the remove classes and picking up with a fresh $
Try stopping after the remove classes and picking up with a fresh $

http://pastebin.com/d4e1fdf0

Actually, make sure you're hitting the code in the first place

No, the removes aren't even happening. Hm.

Removes are happening to me….

try mine

Are you binding to the right event?

Yea, the event is going off, because the hide() is right before that
It's only the class changes that aren't happening

oh well that'll do it
can you use remove() or something like it?
because it's still there

No, I have to leave the form items there
Oh. Duh.

oh I know
when doing tr
tr:not(:hidden)

aha

Oh
Good one
Of course

Now these are selectors I am totally not up on yet

Heh

what's end do?

Pops the stack

Ok, that works.

in the jquery doc it'd defined as *complex*
cool

filter and find etc push a new resultset onto the stack, end() pops it

what's that mean?

It means you can go back to what you were talking about before you filtered down
bIt means you can go back to what you were talking about before you filtered down/b
$ saves your old selections

ok
that's better

That pretty much rocks.
What a nifty piece of code. Thanks!

this is awesome!

It is a great UI for manipulating lists.

it shouldn't let me add empty fields

If it had sorting it'd be the bomb.

now it needs drag+drop
sortings easy

My experience is that drag & drop is not easy

http://lovepeacenukes.com/tablesorter/2.0/docs/

Tho of course I have a fairly complex drag & drop app

that plugin autta work

not that kind of sorting
user sorting. i.e, d&d or up/down arrows

what kind of sorting?
oh
LOL

oh, THAT stuff's easy :P
heh
I was worrying about collation for a second ther

Nah. THIS Ui doesn't need that sorting (order is fixed, biggest to smallest) but if we were to use this to organize poll choices, then it'd need a way to re-order the list.)
I already do up/down arrows in nodequeue

it doesn't re-order apon adding
ahem… squad, we need to fix this

No, it doesn't really need to. It'll re-order when it saves
There's not a lot of payoff to re-order upon add.

grin /

Look at what jQuery does when you use jQuery objects for the dom manipulation stuff
i.e. after(), before(), append()
I'm talking about looking at the api host docs :P
http://jquery.com/api/

I have no idea what you're getting at.

Look at the third example for after or before
jQuery moves elements instead of copying when you use jquery objects as the param

Yes, I'm aware of this

OK

I don't get the point
It's the drag and drop part that's hard, not moving the item around.
Arrows are easy

That's what I was saying
I think a big part of the difficulty is the lack of built in drag&drop utilities

I think a big part of the difficulty is that browsers are ass
But I'm not bitter *cough*Safari*cough*
Well and IE too

(opera and right clicking *cough*)

I'll be bitter for you

No standards for parts of the stuff required for working drag and drop…

http://jquery.com/api/data/jquery-docs-xml.xml
this s cool

Write code for api.module to read it? :P

http://jquery.com/api/data/jquery-docs-json.js
how would you like to see the data?
what format?

In the api.module database tables, duh. :P
doxygen format :P
Actually, you can just make something like api_parse_php_manual

A client recently requested AJAX validation on forms….. I was thinking of somehow integrating it with CCK and your JSON server.

that'd be cool…
I think I know what you can do
copy the form

It would definately push the CCK + AJAX along.
*movement

that'd be cool
don't know how it would work exactly

Me neither, actually.
One of my co-workers is really pushing Adobe's Spry as well, so a Adobe Spry Server mihgt come out of this as well.
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/formsvalidation/

Komodo 4.2 beta 3 is now out, and they're gonna activate the update system tomorrow morning with a beta4

I guess you could aim at reading and maybe listening

ok, worked, I think

hmmm, listening might be harder but yeah

hard to say how hard their tests are…

never knew komodo 4.1 was out :P

of course listening someone talk fast is tricky…

Cool, people (:

my English scores… (out of 9.0) Listening 8.5 , Reading 8.5 (for my life I do not know what I have erred), Writing 7, Speaking 8

I don't usually try the betas, but I've been wanting a working update feature, so I'm gonna participate in this one…

so Listening and Reading are likely targets.

Anyone know if there is a module for uploading files (of various version) and having the user to accept a license agreement of some sort?

doh!

where do you start with french ? zero ?

yeah homer?

absolute zero.

Um, I did that on purpose. Yeah. I'm, um… Stress testing the debugging proxy. Yeah, that's it.

cool :-)

but if I do not get an approved job offer I might need that 1-2 points…

currently googling some sample TEF questions…

though I believe I have 25 points on education, 17 or 19 on work experience, 10 on age, 16 on English — making 68-70 out of the 100 and 67 is the limit.
it's a bit too tight.

found some sample 'Reading' tests, can mail them if you want

would be great.

probably when i write icons.module

if I understand anything based on my English knowledge that's a start :P

what is icons.module?

it'sbasically going through a short / medium text and answering a few MCQ-based questions

MCQ…?

multi choice?

icons.module is purely theoretical at this point, but it would allow completely customizable icon packs mixing and matching

er, yes sorry multi-choice (I tries a rogue translation…)

ah yes
multichoice question.

provided by any 'icons pack' or default icons provided by modules

I don't understand

well, i haven't written any code yet

so modules provide a hook_icon

but i've speced it a bitt

but I don't know if the questions themselves will actually be asked in french or in your native lanuage (which would be easier of course…

no, actually it's all in info files

and have a URL and a weight

http://www.fda.ccip.fr/documents/pdf/tef/questions_type.pdf

(higher weights override stuff)

in French.

oh
how would you do it then?

can hook_elements be used to add a field type of datetime (with year, month, day, hour, minute, second)? If so, any pointers to docs?

well, each theme would contain an 'icon mapping' in the info file

mmmh. not that easy, then…

mapping css classes to preset icon names
making it so any theme could use any set of icons

you have not seen me learning.

true :-D - but I know you do want that visa…

the icons module would generate the necessary dynamic css file to map the icons to the css classes of the theme

I am old and slow but when I was sixteen i learned lord of the rings word by word

that seems kinda cpp;
cool

ah…

yeah, but all in theory

but wouldn't it be cool to just be able to include a set of icons and a hook_icons and have a icon() function?
that spits out HTML

are there other categories for points?

not really, since i'd want themes to provide/utilize icons

adaptability. No dice.

I remember investigating this myself for a bit (GWB)

and we want to avoid themers needing a template.php

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/EG74.asp this is all.

theme_icons?

the icons hook might exist for modules, i think it'd make sense there
but for themes, definitely not
or for icon packs, also php free
just info files

also found that - but it looks like nothing official or even TEF-related : http://www.french-in-cannes.com/cours/test_eval.shtml

could you pastebin a) how a theme would use it b) what a .info file would look like

I guess I will do some very speedy learning in the next 2.5 months and then spend a month in France (Paris, Marseilles or somesuch) to accelerate the process

i'm in the middle of things atm, i'll comp it up when i'm not quite so busy

so I can understand?
because I don't
ok

er, sorry

ooooh, the old theme_icons idea!

i must not be explaining well
haha, yeah eaton
info files… info files are the secret

http://www.lullabot.com/articles/creating_awesome_new_icons#comment-722 that's spam

it's true i don't want someone to run off and code it before i get to it

ok, time to sleep - night all - bonne nuit chx

aww darn

g'night yched!

nite yched

hello
i have a question

support?

Please throw a quarter in the support jar (http://association.drupal.org/donations) . #drupal is reserved for development discussions (please see channel topic). Volunteers offering live support can be found in #drupal-support. If no one is
available in #drupal-support, try the forums at http://drupal.org/forum. Thank you for giving us a space to work on improving Drupal for you!

that
that's my quiestion lol

i created a few menus in drupal, but when i print out $secondary_links ther are only shown one of the menus i've created… and the others not =/ what's the problem (i am a new @drupal)

try #drupal-support

thx
pwolanin^^

hey all how's it going?
oh wait, wrong channel

=D

hi.. can anyone help me how do i add an upload form in a node? using drupal api?
thanks

use upload module…
anyone else here noticing something funny with menu paths when a module is enable (in HEAD)

nayone here an icon designer?

dmitrig01 maybe try #drupal-themes ?

http://drupal.org/user/162724/track

ping mikesmullin

also… http://drupal.org/user/163778 — he's BAAAACK

whos back - spammer?

The jerk from earlier today

ahhh

support vampire :P
at least, he was a while back
so i've decided to completely trash the cck wizard and start again. this time I'll take cues from the groups UI and this http://drupal.org/node/101707

13 IRC mentions

hey dfletcher

this is going to rock
^^
it's current state is just sad
it needs to die
wanna help remake it?

ya it needs some work, but how else would you make it?

like the way cck's groups do

i would probably wait for FAPI3 in D6

nah. multistep looks easy
for the wizard scenario

http://drupal.org/node/159697

Drupal.org webmasters, User account problem, normal, active, 2 IRC mentions

if cck's groups could be nested, i'd totally hook on to them

"That's because you're BANNED, MORON."

LOL

how is he adding that ticket
:o

Second user account

he created another nick
http://drupal.org/user/163778

lol we need squidster to make a "you've been bitchslapped" graphic :P

http://drupal.org/user/163778

lol

someone have perms to block him?
lol

ooo ooo i have an idea for the graphic
a hand smacking the face and water druplets fly off :-p

lol

nice

you're doing this to us: http://squidgystudios.com/drupal/drupa_katamari2.jpg

yikes I cause devastation!
darn I guess mikesmullin doesn't want to help me rebuild it them ;P

haha
thats a funny picture

that was actually a tough call on wizard. seriously I hope I didn't hurt mikesmullins feelings there .. he wrote a lot of code (though, loads of oo stuff that I never would have done)
but man, I wanna make this thing shine

who is he?

donno. he offered to update cck wizard to 5, so I gave him commit rights
he went a bit wild to say the least
but I can't blame him
the original had .. shortcomnigs

how did it work?

well the 4.7 one was such a horrible hack that I have blacked it out in my brain. thar be dragons :P
but #multistep makes things much more clear

how does the UI work?

#multistep is gone in Drupal 6. But the end result is much better.

well dmitrig01 you insert fields that act as partitions

where cani get a tutorial about it?

it's clumsy

i would love to learn it asap

eaton, hmm will it be pretty easy to upgrade that? is it worth working on now? I could use it in 5 :/
but it's not critical

what about fieldgroups?

the workflow has definitely changed, but for now you're probably best just working with #multistep.

you could steal some logic and stuff from fieldgroups

dmitrig01, hell ja
that's what I want

but just don't allow nested groups

super slick interface
yeah
that's the prob
otherwise, I'd just alter them

well super slick
is ajax
drag+drop
'n stuff

:P
and you say I cause devastation ;P
thanks for the advice eaton I'll start rockin on this

but once Drupal 6 comes out I think youll be pleasantly relieved with the way that kind of form works.

I will help you if you want

#multistep was mostly just a flag that said, "hey, let me do some complex things I couldn't before…"

drupal always gets better with age. it's like wine

in Drupal 6, all forms work that way

nice

so, for example, your _validate handler can say, 'Wait, no, stop and rebuild the form before submitting it, i need to add a captcha'
or things like that.

aha very smooth

alert. you looked too much like a spammer. let's try this again with a captcha

Right.
or, say, your submit handler can say, "What's this? you checked 'yes, add me to the mailing list?' I'll throw up another form after processing this to handle the additional input that's needed.'

oooh my wizard could have conditional paths!

that'd be awesome

exactly.

let's think about possible here now

there's definitely a lot of potential.
especially now that individual buttons can have their own submit handlers and validate handlers.

oh goody, epp is back and hasn't seemed to have learned his lesson in manners

so one button could go down one path and another could just process and end.
oooh, fun! link!

"Alternate themes/styles (argh, more interchangable terms!) would be nice; I don't much like white backgrounds…"

it wasn't a real bug report, so I closed it
also, most were nonsence

dmitrig01, so something like this perhaps. http://rafb.net/p/nIfRmN38.html
but
field is obvious - list of cck fields
maybe value is a checkbox?

let's get the basics working first

err :P
dmitrig01, well I think visually sometimes.

e.g. simple multistep form

sure

that doesn't look simple
so - how do we divide this up
?
adding field groups and making multistep work?

hmm, yeah. and a basic "add page" form

field group = page
should we do it that way?
and if so, which part would you be willing to get?

field groups seemed to mess up my cck fields, and i can't seem to get rid of whatever i did

so let's not make the wizard do that ;P
dmitrig01, thinking

cool

I'll do the multistep
I have some pretty specific ideas how I want it to go

ok, cool

shall I give you commit rights? hmm, how to "reset" this module
or we work offline for a bit

like, i tried setting up a field group for "media" items like videofield and audiofield (which didn't work with postgresql well) and when i got rid of them and the mediafield, it still shows my imagefield but not inline like on other nodes i didn't mess with

let's do that dmitrig01 we'll crank offline and glue it together before we commit anythin

ok
what about HEAD?

hmm how do I get back to head? co -r HEAD is it?

no
maybe…
quickstart?

quickstart is http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs/quickstart

this might help

up -dP -r HEAD?

up?

to help keep d.o up you could try http://association.drupal.org/donate or http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache%3Ahttp%3A//association.drupal.org/donate

update

thx neclimdul

no, he wants to commit to head

ooooh

nt update from head

commit/ci

well I want to get back from DRUPAL-5 in this checkout
seemd to work

but, you need to update to head first so you commit to the right tag

ah

unless ci accepts the revision arg but I don't think it does

what about cvs removing all files in DRUPAL-5 and working on head only?

aparently it does

ack HEAD is currently the 4.7 revision :/
this is fuxord

is it possible to remove a directoryin cvs

dmitrig01, tempted to try to remove all of it yeah

like completely remove the wizard
and start over
"First revision of freetagger."?

commit an empty file?

lol dmitrig01 it's another module I was working on at the time. damn

no remove contributions/modules/wizard completely

and all it's branches

erm. you must appeal to the great and powerful dww who will probably beat you

lol yeah

I recommend preparing a lot of real justifcations

wizard2?
that's cheap ;P

what is wrong with wizard?

how about this
tag it for 1.0 :P and then head will work

oo i just learned multistep forms!

You seem to have failed both. That is the reason you were blocked.

lemme take a guess about what you want

hey!
I was right!

about what?

159199

Drupal, other, normal, closed, 3 IRC mentions

no
I said support to a user
I just guessed that's what they wanted

cool

http://waterfall2006.com/gorman.html :P

I have a question that hopefully someone here can help with

so can I submit that reply?

dmitrig01, I'm not the boss of you
but to me it looked good

ok

I am editing an install profile for a multisite install, and I'd like to set the default for file uploads to NOT list them, on a fresh install.

just wanted someone to check over it

did that make any sense?

ya

its an option that you can turn on or off in admin/settings/uploads
is it just a set_variable()?

variable_set?

http://api.drupal.org/api/5/function/variable_set

yeah that
sorry its been a long day

159199

Drupal, other, normal, closed, 4 IRC mentions

all your dmitrig01
good luck

that's not mine

I also updated the issue text verbage

I've got
159697

Drupal.org webmasters, User account problem, normal, fixed, 5 IRC mentions

oh, I meant you can have eep
my gift to you

gift

LOL :X

hey

It's almost certainly a variable_set — most settings pages work that way

check out the issue submit guidelines
http://drupal.org/node/add/project-issue

Who wrote tableheader.js?

$form['settings_general']['upload_list_default']
so the variable name is upload_list_default, right?

probably. look at the submit hook for the form
if there isn't one then it's definitely
that

dmitrig01, so the old version of this tried to form alter node/add/foo. I think better approach is to drupal_get_form myself in a menu callback. agreed?

does that guy have a 'scapegoat' tag on him?

no
to hackish

you think I should try to alter it?

ya
well

I dont see a submit_hook

is that going to work with #multistep?

I'll write a function

or something :P

that gives the elements
and you give it the page #
simple!

so unset() them?

but that doesn't mean i'm not retarded

you were right: upload_list_default
upload_list_default

If there isn't as ubmit hook it's using Drupal's default settings form which saves everything via variable_set
If there isn't as ubmit hook it's using Drupal's default settings form which saves everything via variable_set

its not often I'm right

wow, your new playmate went nuts.

so can I just run variable_set('upload_list_default',0);
is that how to do it?

perhaps just mention that we're not paid to help him and by ranting or attacking us, he drives down our desire to tollerate him

me? I'm really sorry if I'm asking elementary questions

that was for dmitrig01

No, this guy named eep^2 who got blocked for being a collossal ass.

oh
I did it. it worked. :-D
well it worked when I ran it. so do I just throw that somewhere in the install profile?

how come http://drupal.org/project/tagadelic has comments under project page? i never seen that before

I know its kind of a dumb thing to set, when theres already a setting for it, but Bev wants it

nah, it's a default. Yea, set it in the profile, about the same place we did the last one

crazy - had no idea that one of the top music2.0 sites is drupal

our new friend thinks were all here for his tantrums

Just to be different.

the amount of times you have to repeat yourself before he understands any part of what you're saying is astounding.

project playlist - http://www.projectplaylist.com/

it looks like everything is in a function call, can I just put the code or do I need to say function variable_set('upload_list_default',0);

I like comments 7 and 8 myself

do you remember the last variable_set we added to that file?

to the install profile?

Yea

no
i'm looking for it
but I don't remember specifically what we put in the install profile

For the users online time

oh, right

nice looking site

oh well. now we can look forward to eep3 - eep in the third dimension! yikes! ;P

He will be like the timecube guy
FOUR DIMENSIONAL DAY! YOU WERE EDUCATED STUPID!

ok i found it
and I put my change in

guess they have about 8m users - http://davidporter.wordpress.com/2007/07/13/the-top-10-music-20-sites-june-2007/

now now, we're the holier then thou, we can't decend to his level

ok i can commit this now
right?

would be nifty if some of the features of project playlist made it back to the community
bwould be nifty if some of the features of project playlist made it back to the community/b

well I guess we'll see if it works when I provision the next site

Eep I am pounced!

because, it seems that every time I want to use views, I wind up getting stuck on these non-standard joins

the guy refuses to think he is heing mad
*rude

you too

tomorrow, when you have some time, I'd like to talk to you about putting a couple of other things into the installer profile

I think I just shut him up for a little while

he actually thinks because it's his world view, we have to take it.
Drupal, not your nice cuddly open source project

He's right, I have it backward in the doc.

NULL

Drupal, the driving towards professionalism

would you mind saying that?

Do people on the ip banlist get a nice explanatory page?

nope

i've had enough of him for the next 12 hours

I have a troll theory. they go off to some other project, humbled. act super nice. are "surprised" how well they are received there and compare it to the old comunity at face value. then they marry the princess. and then you have a princess and a troll. later, joomla dies. damn semm to have
wandered a bit :P

already? wimp

it;s not that
I am tired in the first place

any one of us can be pissed. but this guy was directly attacking a lot of the worng people across the entire site

ah

we also get into arguments on occasion between each other. generally most duck until the 2-4 are done

well either way, making a conscious effort not to annoy people is probably still a good practice

Directly ridiculing people with d.o admin privs: Not a good way to start your Drupal career…

next day, it's usually all better again
and I was nice too
he called me a putz

Definately. You get so much better support with that mindset…

and yet, not better the next day
please add that
I will talk more with the guy tommorow

dmitrig01, just remember. everybody in the USA hates their supid neighbor. his name is eep and he's really really lame! can we code now? ;P

Oddly enough, despite the fact that I'm a horrible programmer, I really do enjoy it
I just suck

lol

oh very well

anyone here wanna take claim of http://drupal.org/user/32400?
who iis it?

in what way?

I work there
From my home in South Dakota. XD

it's getting late here. Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it.

Yeah

well congrats then

remote jobs are nice

Yeah

I still have the dialup too, of course

that's pretty cool Bdragon - http://www.chicagotech.org/about
congrats

Definitely a wild ride But I might make it back someday, though my nonprofit gig is more fulfilling in some ways.
Jim is my current room mate, incidentally.

Heh

looks like you have a little spam - http://portal.chicagotech.org/

lol, that's some stale spam

the best kind - mmmm

I like hot spam sammitches
I don't know, I started on to work on gmap stuff, and I'm staying on to work on geospatial stuff
Heh

damn dmitrig01 you vanished! how am I supposed to code the multistep part of this if you're doing the cck stuff and we haven't agreed where to store the data! hmm on the node I suppose. pfft details.

I think the Coop model works, in general…it's based on tying employment to ownership, which isn't a bad model for a business or nonprofit.

I like your answer merlinofchaos
oh, dchakrab, you have doc maintainer role now

about being excluded from the community?

yes.

Really? Awesome!
Gracias

dchakrab raised a very good point; the real world works that way too.
In jobs you get fired; in social groups you get ostracized; in the military you get hazed.

more about 'this isn't the real world, it's an online communtiy. I've worked VERY hard to get that attitute to prevade d.o.

That was what I was trying to get across originally…that the convenient "the real world is harsh" excuse isn't valid.

some folks were difficult to reign in flame on response
mine is, we're not paid to be here, so we don;t have to tollerate those that can;t behave. though I had nicer words

The problem is, that's become a cliche for open source non-support.

we used to have a flame rant a quarter. I've worked hard to make sure those threads die ignored, cold and lonley
doesn't matter.

…which can result in the typical "this is the real world, accept my criticism or die" line.

which we ignore and ostrasize
I've worked hard o install the attitute that support vampires can't hold us hostage to their problems
and trolls
a few angry nasty rude people can destroy a community faster then anything and we're big and robust enoguhthat if we do it right, all they end up complaining about makes them look foolish

Hmmm…perhaps idealistically, I wish we could just teach them a better model for communication, so they'd become contributing members of the (or any) community.

he wanted his original account back, I can't believe he thinks that abuse is normal communication

we do. a lot
this one was an unusal case.
http://drupal.org/forum-posting
I need to incorporate some of dman's comment. not all though

plenty enough people stay on, then a year later they laugh about their first post

this one was name callign from his first few post.
swearing in issues, calling people idiots, etc

http://drupal.org/node/71690

Agreed. I didn't see the originals, though I was lurking when people here said he was becoming tiresome in #drupal-support.

RTFM should just be RTM

yes. I do NOT want to see RTFM in any doc page
I am looking at that now to get rid of the comment

RTVLASERMODQ

OMGRTFMBBQ

read the very large and sometimes even relevant manual of debatable quality

I will just incorporate what he said into the book page and delete it
hEY!

I didn't say we ever LOSE the quality debates

The quality of the documentation is like radioactive material; it decays over time.
You can't stop that, all you can do is run around and fix the decayed bits.

Yeah…

jeez Bdragon you wrote a thesis in your fp :P

yes, well I am doing something about some of that very very soon
dfletcher link

Yeah, I wanted to make a good first impression in my fp :P

http://drupal.org/node/71690

ha. I loved ximo's reply too

Oh! I got a comment from someone I sorta pushed into Drupal today. As a newbie, she found nancyw's Drupal cookbook document *really* handy; but because it was named Cookbook she passed over it first.
A cookbook sounds like a list of recipes, not a tutorial. And her doc is definitely a tutorial

get her feedback on this http://scratch.blkmtn.org/install-and-config
it;s still alpha

you intend to host that? I'd be scared to expose it to the handbook.
you intend to host that? I'd be scared to expose it to the handbook.
it's so tidy

no, it will replace the install and config section of the handbook

ah. good good
looks great

this will be CORE docs for drupal, versioned per release

It looks a little early to give to a relative newbie to comment on.

a new book will be created called something like 'Community something'

The structure looks quite nice though

for all the other stuff
it's essentially install.txt with some concepts wrapped around it
page through cap 4
chap 4

Why don't you like the marketing-sounding text? Referring to your comment on http://scratch.blkmtn.org/node/43

Is this targeted for Drupal 6?

do you want cpanel versions of things like this: http://scratch.blkmtn.org/node/15 ?

D5, covnert to docbook. put in cvs, begin update for d6 when d6 goes alpha
no.

I'm inclined to think that the more ammo we can give a dev to take to his project manager, or a nonprofiteer to their skeptical board member, the more smoothly Drupal will slip in to new orgs.

Cool.

ok. I won't write one :P

something like that would go int he community how to section. this is focused to be maintainable

sure. just getting the feel

this isn't about marketing. this is about installing and configuring Drupal. and writing it in a maintainable fashion. that said, I included her comments to review when I get back to that section as I could be wrong

Behold, the text on update.php has been rewritten: http://head.logrus.com/update.php

but where's the button to backup my datase?

Understood. Are there enough active doc people to start a doc channel, or should the conversations happen here?

bwahahaahahaha!

dba.module can provide that I hear

we float between here, -dojo and -support
I meant the button on the page

Guess they get to read the handbook for that

you know it's the first feature request for D6 after release

infra mailing list too

It's not a bad feature request but fairly out of scope for Drupal.

and doc mail list although currentlydead.

no, there's a docs mail list too

I know

ya

Though actually, at this point we probably could write a decent database backup.

this weekend I will be kick starting it somewhat
I started working on it at Yahoo con

Yes, I knew about the list…I was just thinking it'd be easier to get feedback (especially for someone newer to the doc project, i.e. me) in a dedicated channel.

not enough people yet for yac (yet another channel

what docbook tools do you use?

we make an ad hoc one at times.

Ok…I should head to bed. Nice to talking to you all. sepeck: Thanks for the perms. I will use my powers for good.

right now trying xxe.

Does Drupal support docbook at all?

not dedicated to one. I am doing the whole thing in book module to collaborate
it almost did once
the issues to solve are how to display on d.o. once it's done.

Yea.

also, changes to it will be limited like core is limited

You know, I could use the ability to fix typos when I come across them…. I'm sure I've skipped several dozen because of the bother of commenting on an issue…

and there WILL be a downloadable file for it

Cool

I've been subscribed to infra, webmasters, and devel for quite a while now….
Can I have a doc team bit?

I thought about drafting you but thought you were a jerk so didn;t
JOKING
welcome to the team

Woohoo!
Thanks

man, for about ten minutes, I had perms that you didn't. I'm telling Jim.

so, if I have to, I will hand add each page to the handbook and lock them with the php filter
I did yours yesterday, you don;t check the issue queue :P

hmm while the writers are jumping on the bandwagon… sample: http://newsrat.splendora.com/node/1 (I'd love to help with a cookbook-like development effort)

oh, really? Whoops

http://scratch.blkmtn.org/theme-developers-guide

bandwagon? cattle train

So I had a *whole day* more than my fellow Coopers, hah.

currently the theme docs are looking for a LOT of love

sepeck, yeah I'm ust playing around and writing stuff people in support ask me
but I'd love to contribute it somewhere useful

I would like for someone who wants to to seriously update stuff. If there is a good effort, then just make themeing it;s own book

that sounds very reasonable

ahd welcome to the team

remember merlinofchaos "theming microcosm" ?
yay!

well, the last 2 people who told me that that's what I needed to do bailed when I told them they could lead the effor t dvessel is tracking the cvs changes for D6 and writing that other book I linked you too
theming needs update for d5 but I will be happy if d6 gets it

speaking of bailing, laterz

haha

I'd love a more comprehensive guide to theming, since I'm going to have to tackle a fairly complex theme in the very near future. I'll document my process in case it comes in handy later.

please and update the handbook pages.

Though I'm hardly confident enough of my theming ability to write comprehensive docs for it just yet.

make a new one if you want.

If you put in stubs for the theming section of the module developer's guide I will try to put some text to it

just bits and piece it update is all

It may be terse text that needs a lot of editing help

ask me next week. when I get the install to beta quality and I will see what I can do

ok

I distract easily and if I get distracted I won't get it done

hello, i have a view that should display as a block but i cannot enable the block… it just doesnt save into a region
i want to debug it but i don't know where to start.. i looked at the blocks table and it doesnt save

i seek a yes/no answer from a FAPI guru. one of you please raise hand if i can ask you

hi, does anyone know of a tool to remove all or certain attributes from a html file?
trying to convert some legacy material away from inline-style and deprecated attributes

thanks
don't think there is a tool to do that, as there are probably lots of required changes and tinkerings which an application wouldn't be able to do

I found a small perl script that does it very well
But of course it's perl, so it cannot be anything other than small ;-)

Hello folks

how do i center a div within another div?

does anyone know of a nice registration page they is free to use on any site that has some nice js and looks good?

Hello guys
Where can one paste pics to show for an example?

hey
is it possible to send two values with one radio button? (x,y coordinates)

what do you think of gedit as a html editor? I've been using with w3schools and its pretty good..although the syntax highlighting does not seem to work in realtime
anyone recommend a good editor

How can we get that affect with div? plus the following one as well

PsPa
PsPad

hello, does anyone know of a good reference for stretching an image with css?

http://picpaste.com/howto-give-affect-with-div-second-sample.png

sounds nifty

I found out how to setup a menu with div
but I can't make the text divided in 2×4 and centered on the page

oh sorry Crytor I should have said I use linux

Is html that boring, you don't even want to talk about it? :p

Haris, thanks for the link, however, thats not quite what I need. I have some css creating a background image as a header on a page. I want to make the banner stretch all the way across the top of the page no matter the viewers screen size.

I'm sorry for the confusion, the link is my Q for the room, not an answer to your query

bye

Haris, thats ok, I've found another way around my problem I think, now I just need to get positioning and layering to work.(Yes I know its not really 'layering' but I don't know a better word.)

The div command and its usefullness with css illudes me
Need help guys
Anyone around?

Haris, as far as I know the div commands only purposes for logical seperation between different elements, say if you want to group a series of objects together by one set of rules, and then move something else on the page by a different set.

for example, I have this ( http://update.lansdowneconsulting.com/expertise-cost ) page
I can't seem to add more stuff to it, so the page becomes long, it moves on the left section where the menu is
Maybe because the menu comes after the navigation section
or content section, but I can't make heads or tails of how to do it
Can we tell it how long the section shall be?

Haris, try a width='#'; or a height='';

how do you get the copyright symbol?

where is a site that describes how various HTML things should be rendered?

Hello, are there any secrets to get items to fit somewhere they wont? like i want to have a horizontal nav bar, but i want more items on it then will fit in one row

hello

around the UL part?

i dont know, but i do think that in CSS you can use the property list-style-type

that doesn't seem to have any effect
it seems it's not possible to specify ul.margin inside a div style="…", like in a style/style

: okay i dunno about how it works inline like that, i know that in my CSS i have for a list list-style-type: none; to get rid of the discs, etc.

does somewhere exist an offline html documentation?

hey guys, i just forgot one trivial thing, how to redirect a form to itself from html only?

is it possible to nest styles? to create simulate a grouping effect?

im pretty sure you can
Hello, how can i make it so that hovering over the link on my nav bar doesnt make all the links "flinch" http://www.uniquelynorth.com/Uniquely_North_Web_Template.html

why does it say head is not finished @ w3c validator? http://erxz.com/pb/4114

could anyone please tell me why my shoppingmenu bar isnt centered and why the whole horizontal row there doesnt have the green background color? http://www.uniquelynorth.com/Uniquely_North_Web_Template.html
oh sorry i didnt see your answer, but that code wasnt working in IE so i had to change it.. and from what i could tell they already did have a border that was teh same as the background color, thank you though

How would I do that?

Hey folks, does anyone care to explain to me the best way to structure user comments now a days? Im working on a web app that will rely heavily on thread comments and I wanted some feedback on the best way to structure it if anyone cares to share their thoughts.
Thanks in advance.

Hello
This page is Valid HTML 4.01 Transitional, but it does not look right. http://rhs.dyndns.org/acpbeta/test.php I've been back and forth trying different things, and I can't figure out why it dosen't render properly

on a page with a form with a dropdown menu, how can i get a change in the selection in the menu to do something different on the page? i.e. i want the menu to act as a button, with an "action", i guess, without having to actually press a button. anybody know how this is done?

Anyone "here" ?

Hello folks
How can I make this table with div ( http://picpaste.com/how-to-add-this-table-using-div.PNG ). Is it even possible?

Hi.
is it possible to make divs widths as big as the text in it?
because I have this div, and it's 100% width, I want it to be only as big as the text insid it, and if I set a width value for it, it doesn't expand, any suggestions?

Garg, do you have an example online?

http://gargantua.servehttp.com/tbbs/index.php?id=cp
see "askldj asdjas"?

um no i dont actually

really?

it redirected me when i clicked the link to another page

what's it say?

it wants me to login

oh hold on
ok try it now

you need to float the div to the left
its not the best web hosting way to do it, but well, itll do what you want.

well I want the div "askldj asdjas" is in to be as big as the text.

however might i suggest to just get rid of the lines in general, from a design perspective its very liney. yes i made that word up.
yeah, if you float the div that surrounds that text itll work
youll need to add a clear though

how?

div style='float: left;
erm
div style='float: left;'asdf/div

ah got it, thanks alot.

np, make sure you use a clear though

what's clear?

when you float a div the div will only recognize the width of the content inside of it, not the height. the div itself will collapse to the default height. What this does it anything below the float div will move up because there isnt anything to push it down
so to fix this you have two options
you can either (and this is what i personally suggest) div style='float: left; overflow: auto;'/div

or
div style='float: left;'content/div
div style='clear: both'/div
make sense?
So im going to give this another shot, because I know people are reading this. You all are lazy. :P
Does _anyone_ have a suggestion for structuring user comments.
Right now, I have a comment header with the users avatar, user name and some misc options similar to rating a comment ala digg.com
below that, the actual comment
anyone…?

what is the tag to define where 'content' is? a href="#content"

but that isn't valid

Hello?
Guys?

and table. Need help

Haris
http://w3schools.com

I should set up Lolibot to give an automated response every time someone links to w3schools
I really need the free time to make a decent alternative to w3schools

w3schools has helped me countless times
but if you feel you can make a better alternative, go for it. i might just use it.

sounds like a worthy community project
`div @ Haris
`html div @ Haris

http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/global.html#edef-DIV

`html table @ Haris

http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/tables.html#edef-TABLE

I think the problem with w3 right now is pages such as those just dont make sense at all if someone doesnt understand the difference between a table and a div
If i were new to html and i clicked that, id close it immediately out of fear.

w3schools apparently doesn't know the difference between a table and a div
It uses tables for layout

i think its just old
i would assume at least

It has a lot of other bad information

I tend to end my sentences with two spaces rather than one, yet HTML by design ignores more than one consecutive space.
I know I could write my HTML like this whenever I want to spaces.  But I'm hoping there's a better way to change it site-wide (or page-wide) instead of littering my content with  s

How should forms look like in XHTML 1.1? Please have a look at http://rafb.net/p/mtYlAb74.html, I'm cluless how to "finish" it.

lymeca, im stumped. the only ways i can think of to do what you want would end up being, well, retarded.
input type="submit" src="/sovix/include/img/go.jpg "
you have a space after the .jpg inbetween the quote
im not sure thats the problem, but hell ive never been surprised by things like this before

Same problem after I corrected it.

then i have no clue sir, sorry.

hrm?

Is someone here well experienced with XHTML 1.1?

dbe, its not xhml 1.1
its just bad syntaxing
input types the use images are image types, not submit or reset
input type="image" src="/sovix/include/img/go.jpg"

input type="image" src="/sovix/include/img/go.jpg"/

i would check the doc's for the rest
yeah, sorry, im old school 4.0 by habbit, i forget the /'s alot
byeah, sorry, im old school 4.0 by habbit, i forget the /'s alot/b
layers? gtfo :P
my site im building uses images in the login form, http://69.254.26.158/dru1

I've corrected some things but the problem persist: http://rafb.net/p/Iqhyxp25.html
I'm validating with !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd"

yeah i dont know xhtml's doc structure rules too well
i dont see any obvious error in the code
maybe take out the inputs one by one and revalidate
like remove lines 3-6 and validate
then put them back
take out line 7
and so on
what about the trailing spaces on line 2 + 3? is that an xhtml thing or a lazy thing?
because that *MIGHT* be it

the problem is that your input elements aren't inclosed in another block element

oh so slide a div in and thats it?

form elements may only contain block elements or script
inputs are not block elements
http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/interact/forms.html#h-17.3
so use a div or a paragraph, or a list or whatever inside the form .. tag

Did, but get these errors: http://rafb.net/p/mB42aI33.html
(the url is full documented).

no, you didn't
form elements can only contain block level elements
you have an input and a select as a child element of a form element
this is not permitted

Oh, so where do I put them?

"document type does not allow element "select" here; missing one of "ins", "del", "h1", "h2", "h3", "h4", "h5", "h6", "p", "div", "address", "fieldset" start-tag"
those are block elements
the child elements of your form must only be of those types
the inputs would go inside of one of them

Thanks.

np

I'm validating a website revision system I've created, see sovix.org

xhtml is not "more strict" than html 4.01 strict. It's also not better supported, and in fact will probably require you to break your site for actual XHTML user agents just so 99.99% of users will actually get your page

Hey, is there a simple way to make links not appear as blue and underlined in users browsers? (different tag?)

use css
a { color: red; text-decoration: none; } a:hover { color: green; text-decoration: underline; } etc

Okay, I'll use that instead, thanks

Plantain, define a:link and a:visited also or you get issues in a couple browsers

Okay, will do

for SEO do you think urls like United_States or United+States is better?

unomystEz, united-states works fine

but some countries may have hyphens in it
hehe
so it's not a good choice

why my textarea have blinking pointer in middle of first col
and not in begin of textarea
solved!

unomystEz, google sees hyphens as separator
what countries have is irrelevant
unless there are two countries with the same name
but a hyphen or space is the only difference

could not bind to address

is apache refusing to start?

could not bind to address is Either 1) you're not root, 2) something's already running on that port or 3) there are multiple listen or port directives. Please see http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/CouldNotBindToAddress

What fajita said

yes, it will not start

Either set a hostname in /etc/hosts, or make sure that ServerName is set, or disable mod_unique_id
Or all of the above.

you're using mac os x, right?

However, taht particular error will very seldom cause Apache to refuse to start.

yes I am

yes, unless you're using mod_unique_id, in which case there is another error in the log
probably

probably is the same as 'definitely not' when dealing with important or critical applications - if you're not sure, don't let 'probably' suffice

I used "/Library/Apache2/bin/apachectl start"

she said something in last session, I think. But not now.

sakitram:
could not bind to address

yes?

^^
i suspect you've got mod_unique_id enabled.
is there an error in your error log relating to mod_unique_id?

the probelm is I do not even know what mod_unique_id is, nor how to enable/diable it

mod_unique_id is a module which generates a unique id for every request.
if you don't know what it is, you don't need it.
to disable it, look through your httpd.conf file. near the top you'll see:
LoadModule unique_id_module mod_unique_id.so
or something very similar

not sure what the best course of action would this be so i'm asking the abundant knowledge of the IRC channel; i've got two different webapps and one is replacing the other; the first one is one.domain.tld and the second is two.domain.tld [for this example] now people have made links to one.domain.tld/foo.bar and i want any requests for one.domain.tld/* to forward over to two.domain.tld; what would be the best method of doing this

either delete that line, or put a # at the beginning of it.

could not bind to address

could not bind to address is Either 1) you're not root, 2) something's already running on that port or 3) there are multiple listen or port directives. Please see http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/CouldNotBindToAddress

I keep getting this error and I have Options +Indexes

There you go.

// servername one.domain.tld // redirectpermanent / http://two.domain.tld // /VirtualHost

It means that /var/git is a ScriptAlias directory, and you're trying to do an index of it
ScriptAlias explicitly forbids directory indexes.

rici - sweet! i think that'd be perfect for that one; now i have a second case where i need to redirect domain.tld/one - how can i forward domain.tld/one/* the same way?

that module is not listed

inside the domain.tld vhost, put Redirectpermanent /one /two or Redirectpermanent /one http://two.domain.tld/
depending on which redirect you want
in that case, apache should start even though it's not finding your servername

it's not using that vhost though, it's not one.domain.tld it's domain.tld

aparently it isn't. =(
anything else this could be

yes, that's why i said "inside the domain.tld vhost"

rgrep -i 'ScriptAlias', showed no positive match

for whatever that url was?

yes to defualt-handler

rici - OOOH i see what you're saying - very smart you are

I still get the error

Then please offer us more data.

is there any other error?
yes, that won't work
what are you trying to do, exactly?

thanks, I think that was it - now I'm getting forbidden but I can probably resolve that one

if you want directory listings, or if you don't want them.

oh ok is running now but it still gives me that error
how do I fix it?

I was trying to host a directory /git, outside of my mod-perl handler which catches everything
So I was looking for a way to say, SetHandler (non-perl-default),

put a servername directive into your httpd.conf file
yes, i understand the problem.

solution?

the trouble is that SetHandler also applies to the directory itself, but the default-handler doesn't understand directories
the solution is:

servername directive?

servername directive is kwhat is used for apache to determine wich vhost file in sites-available to use for a certain domain correct

:-(

// /diretory

^^

all your documentroots point to the same thing

ewww ugly syntax but I'll try

in your httpd.conf file, put in a line: ServerName denise.local
that was five lines

rici - one more tricky problem..if someone does domain.tld/foo.bar the redirectpermanent redirects it to two.domain.tld/foo.bar - foo.bar doesn't exist on that so it gets a 404 error, what would you suggest to fix this?

actually you need to merge that with anything else in the …/git directory
it was just to give you an idea…
oh, the url's are not the same between the two applications?
that makes it trickier, indeed.

yes, but I want result, so I am checking so.

not at all, two totally different web apps =(

i thought you said one was replacing the other
i figured that meant it was an upgrade

hmm
that seemed to solve that problem
what did that do?

sorry, one webapp is replacing another webapp getting the same job done, but totally different developers

it told apache what you want to call your server

oh, lol
nice

which saved it from having to figure it out itself

thanks for your suggestion, I tried and killed. but I get message like this what to do "Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [

I am sure I will need the ati drivers for it as my chipset is not listed in the open source I have not loaded

depends on the quality of the overlays

..and overlay it yourself

we've a blacklist system for the really bad one

i assumed it wasnt there because its non free in every sense of the word.

_AxS_, the ebuild from the democracy player site is way outdated

like that anoying teenage who had a beryl overlay or something

but thanks.

nono, i mean go to http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/sunrise/… and grab it that way

gentoo has a lot of non-free stuff. you can install vmware, because you can download it for free. you won't be able to use it without a serial

Anyone willing to help me, I believe I will have to install the display drivers for my video card onto a new install of Gentoo. Problem is I am so new to linux and am not sure where to start.

_AxS_, true i could of done that, but i didnt know about the overlay untill i asked here so i just decided to it the way the guy said he did it

ah ok

yeah, im used to distributions that make less sense and feel like arguing about what "free" means

_AxS_, since building it from source wont work since the tarball is missing files… lol

I am using a Radeon X700 AGP card which aparantly is not supported by XORG but has closed source drivers supplied by ATI
Where do i start with installing the drivers from text interface

swanfl, sounds like something you didnt enable in the kernel is causing that

..worth a read too, just in case

thanks :p

swanfl, idk what option that would be but you should go look around in the menu config and look for anything that has to do with removable media

my machine is identical to my wife's and we're both using identical kernel configs — hers works fine

anyone know of any tutorials for using lame, I want to convert real to mp3

swanfl, only reason left is hardware
maybe a faulty usb controller

jorgp, there is no point to doing that as there would be a loss to quality

with real it's already to late

any differences in use flags? what about version?

xstaticxgpx, don't blame my hardware, I dealt with enough of that crap a couple of years ago when gcc kept crashing

swanfl, well you leave no other reason… same everything and hers works and yours doesnt

version of what? use flags on both boxes use hal and dbus

kde?

it worked before I reinstalled gentoo

hal, dbus, kernel..?

I know, but a customer wants to do it

it's already in the kernel

nono, version differences

kde 3.5.7

you have a reference computer, you just need to find out exactly what's different between them

same version of KDE on both, same version of the kernel

what color depths does the fglrx driver support?

if I do rsync -avH /mnt/gentoo /mnt/backup/root rsync puts the files to /mnt/backup/root/gentoo but I dont want that, the dest dir should be the one specified

i would assume all possible by the cards

can you show me how?

_AxS_, that's an awful large job and I wouldn't know where to start
I don't know how, jorgp aorry
sorry*

hi, anyway to link a ps2 to gentoo?

swanfl, why dont you do emerge -auN world on both computers

tried (for lack of any other ideas) re-emerging hal, dbus, and kde?

and just check to see if theirs a diffrence

when I try 'startx' the screen goes blank and does not respond to anything except ctrl+alt+del - reboots

and a -uDN world / revdep-rebuild too?

at the moment I'm reemerging kdebase

sounds like you're outside of your refresh level. does it respond ton [ctrl][alt][f1] ?

and the log says (EE) fglrx(0): Given depth (8) is not supported by fglrx driver
nope

kde control center reports hal is not supported in the "storage media" section

8? well thats pretty low, so that makes sense. how did you configure xorg?
sounds like they are separate problems though. if it was just that then Xorg would shutdown with the error
which version of ati-drivers did you get?

one source says I have to reemerge kdebase, because it explicitly disables hal support the 1st time it's installed

if I do rsync -avH /mnt/gentoo /mnt/backup/root rsync puts the files to /mnt/backup/root/gentoo but I dont want that, the dest dir should be the one specified

the one emerge gave me - didn't find how to install masked packages yet

(why is that the case?)

nico[0×60]: use '/mnt/gentoo/' instead of /mnt/gentoo

okay

anyone know what package libbfd belongs to? It seems to be missing from my system

that could be your issue. get the newer version and try agian
man portage, look up package.keywords

I am sure I will need the ati drivers for it as my chipset is not listed in the open source. I have not loaded any desktop onto my system yet and I am wanting to use KDE and Beryl, so will i just need to go ahead and get the KDE and XOrg-X11 packages and compile the drivers into XOrg when I
get to that point?

then install beryl?

well you read the howto right? btw im not sure if beryl will work with ati-drivers (closed-source).. all you need to do is put 'fglrx' as your driver in VIDEO_CARDS and then Xorg will use that one instead of the opensource one

does not work

beryl doesnt work with the closed source?

nico[0×60]: sure it does — man rsync, that's exactly what you're supposed to do. trailing / means dont copy that dir name, just the contents of it

beryl does work with the closed source ati driver

i dont think so — but google to be sure, that's just a rumour i thought i heard
there you go, im wrong

my fault, I forgot the trailing / but used the '' thx

nico[0×60]: '' is not important, the slash is

so if i sti
ll want to use alsa but my sound card only supports 1 program at a time is there any way to get multiple streams to work?

i have a question my udev is not making a /dev/disk/by-uuid but blkid shows it. i think it is because the uuid starts with a f instead of a number the udev rule is not picking it up.. any one fimilar with the udev rules?

TheDarkOne[lappy: dmix should let you do that

Ok, well the faq said to recompile xorg with the ati driver package, so should i just go ahead and get he KDE and Xorg packages, then when I am compiling Xorg add in the drivers i need.

auto detecting is a basic function of any modern system. why is it not integrated into Gentoo? Why so many machinations to get it to work?

depends entirely on the udev rules.

axs, does have a gentoo package?

because automagic stuff is annoying

i dunno if that's part of gentoo's default ruleset
TheDarkOne[lappy: yes, and a use flag iirc

the traditional unix way is to give you control …

auto-detect doesn't mean auto-detect and launch apps and do this and popup that.. at least not in gentoo

DrEeevil, just because something is auto mounted, does not mean you lose control of it. also just because it's tradition, doesn't make it right

that being said — this is the first time i've seen anyone that had hal and dbus and kde recently installed and it didn't 'just work'

well, you can add it if you want, but I'd hate that as default
don't make my life hard to make yours easier

any clue what the use flag is?

did you try rebuilding all affeected parties?
TheDarkOne[lappy: 'dmix'

DrEeevil, you'd hate to have your desktop pop up awindow whosing the contents of your digital camera when you plug it in?

doesn't seem to affect any packages

i would

i added it and did emerge –newuse -p world and nothing

but that's just argumentative and off topic

http://pastebin.ca/611435 that is the udev rule it is part of the default for 2007.0

(I mean, what else are you gonna do with those files besides copy them)
no, that is *exactly* the topic here

hello, how do i checkout a git repository?

when I said "auto detect" IO meant the way it's normally done in kde, i.e. pop up a window

of your conversation, not of the channel. the topic here is getting it to work for you.

oh, heh ok

you think it hangs cause of that xinerama thing?

argh yes, I'd hate windows popping up

emerge git, then run the git checkout command

oh, and I'm still waiting for kdebase to finish rebuilding

possibly — you were able to emerge it without xinerama??

(takes forever on my box)

anyways, did you get the new version yet?

especially popups would make me hunt and kill them :-)

Should I just go ahead and do "emerge kde-meta xorg-x11"?

_AxS_, thanks…i thought that it was a lot more complicated than that…

emerging the new versin
*version

i would emerge xorg-x11 first (after you set VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES in make.conf) and then emerge kde-meta

Ok

'k. lmk how it goes after that.

im curently downloading the Gentoo 2007.0 LiveCD and was wandering does it also have an installer on it ?

gentoo Spiegel xorg conf guide

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

it does, don't use it.

sadly yes. I can't recommend using it

ok, but why do you strive for those unstable ati drivers?

ok

err untested

well, the thing with ati-drivers is that they're closed-source, so it doesnt do you any good to wait for them to go 'stable' because they're never going to be any more stable than when they were released.

_AxS_, are you shure that it's git checkout and not git clone?

can i install from the live cd with out the "installer" ?

no idea — the archive you're trying to check out usually gives you the commandline you run
sure can — read the handbook

ok i will read the hand book i gust did not what to waste a download on the wrong cd

the livecd will give you a nice fancy interface to use while you install.. if your bandwidth is low though, you might want to install using the minimal cd
but its up to you

I've just finished using equery + quickpkg to generate binary packages for my system. I want to put these binary packages on another system that's not networked. Can I burn these packages to DVD or something? The real question is how can I emerge these binary packages on a non-networked
system?

by the way, this is all happening on a fresh, clean install (I had to repartion to allow for a dual boot); the only files I carried over were my make.conf and package.keywords

use the -K option, man emerge

_AxS_, thanks, i'll man it.

it was fine before the reinstall

I have HAL+dbus installed along with the gnome-volume-manager, and when I insert a usb stick it does show up in gnome, but I can not umount it as a regular user

anyone have firefox randomly crash/

ok, it updated the driver, now what? startx?

i would reconfigure first
i auto-detect usually, via 'Xorg -configure' and use that as a basis

_AxS_ does -K assume that you have the binary packages all filled in and present in /usr/portage/packages ? Or is there some environment variable I have to set to tell it the location?

i believe there's either an environment variable to set or another command line option

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. server host aborting

cool.

but, you can always mount –bind the dvd's directory to /usr/portage/packages (or whatever the path is supposed to be)

what should I reconfigure?

Xorg.
how did you make your xorg.conf?

Damgit

Hi is there anyway tio recover from a bad stage3? It's not letting me download a good stage3 tar?

grab it from a different server

I'vE used several and came up with thwe same results?

_AxS_:This is Spiegel, In the xorg config faq you send me it has me set the VIDEO_CARD variable in the make.conf, does that mean when i do compile hosting xorg it will add the drivers or will i still need to install the drivers via the
ATI faq?

…hm. that's not good then.
are you testing it with the md5sum?
xorg will emerge in the drivers as it goes

and when I save it asked to overwrite and when I say yes it will download till about 50% and then blow-up?

Oh, well that's your connection. you're saving it to /mnt/gentoo right? not to the livecd?

is there a cure for this ?

Sook meh

Ok, so when Xorg is done and i have finished the install of it I will be able to install KDE and then Beryl. I am done with the video drivers (Hopefully)?
what is with all the quits lol
sheesh

yep — as long as the kernel is configured right so that ati-drivers can emerge successfully and stuffs.

calm down, it's just a netsplit

I am redneck i cannot calm down

should beryl run pretty smoothly on my system? it is 2Ghz athalon XP, 1gb ddr, and Radeon X700 256mb (Dang splits lol)

it'll run fine

sweet

beryl aint that heavy

the handbook is very nicely layed out

I am hopeing to move over from windows to fedora linux on my desktop

there ya go

right now I am just going to dualboot

anyone know gow to set up xconsole ?

I swear, are the sysops just haveing fun with us?

Hi folks, sorry for repeat — window closed. Anybody know why I'd suddenly be getting "Error — File not found" with webmin?

it segfaults, and strace xconsole shows lots of no such file errors, (especially /dev/xconsole)

is there a way to prioritize services that start up with rc-update. I just installed openvpn and created my net.br0 interface but when the pc is booted the openvpn service starts before the net.br0 service causing it to fail.

wow

what would be the best room to get help with wine?

big one

you can edit the openvpn service and tell it that it needs the net.br0 service

how do I do that?

or you can try to set RC_NET_STRICT_CHECKING to yes, meaning all network interfaces must be up to satisfy the "net" dependency

Try #winehq - that's the official wine channel

edit /etc/init.d/openvpn and look around at the top, what it needs

thanks

like before openvpn

right now it says need net

hmmm. upgrade before asking help…. but its the unstable!!!! those crazy people

afte that it also says before netmount
so if I add before openvpn to the net.br0 script I should be ok?

Note that hat Gentoo cosiders unstable and what the package developers consider to be unstable can mean 2 different things

if you set RC_NET_STRICT_CHECKING to yes, it should work as you'd like it
in /etc/conf.d/rc

ok I will try that thanks

rbull, yes something like that

You can mix stable and unstable packages easily (in the vast majority of cases) - see the Gentoo Handbook section on "Mixing Software Branches"

yeah, im emerging it right now
it would be funny if that fixed the problem
duh, upgrade

that worked perfectly thanks guys!

raise your hand if you 3 gentoo
o/

It wouldn't surprise me. wine is aa "high velocity" package - they're costantly making improvements and fixing bugs. It probably has one of the highest release rates of any package.

i dont htink its wine itself. i think i installed it wrong
i installed wine before xorg, and when i ran wine it said i was missing an x driver

I think portage can compete with wine on that

I'm setting up the gimp and I'm not sure if I should use /tmp or /var/tmp for the gimp swap file.

whats the difference?

can somebody help me with this? It's the furthest I ever got with a Gentoo installation… http://www.geocities.com/mtecknology/Screenshot.png

hey guys..
my isp got their port 80 screwed up. does anybody knows a way of getting http content trough other port?

edit your fstab file

TheLorax, i think /tmp is the default

you want to make your web server listen on another port?

my cable company nuked my internet for running a server. 1/12th the normal speed one month

proxy, vpn, port forwarding

MTech, nano /etc/fstab, and edit the lines with /dev/ROOT and BOOT

any app that forward http stuff through other port to a server and way back?

and what's up with all the people leaving an joining?

what kind of isp is that??

I can hardly read

no no no… the problem is that the isp where i connect to, has their port 80 screwed. so i can do everything but surfing the web. so.. i want to know if there is other way of getting http stuff through other port. because the isp fis is gonna take long
saschahl, i live in cuba,.. so you can imagine the kind of isp. a very crappy one

:P

TheLorax, so /dev/ROOT needs to be /dev/hda3 and and such?

you could use an open proxy
or if you have a server, build up a little vpn

saschahl, through other port right?

yes

tried tor (http://tor.eff.org/) ? Do make sure that it's not illegal in your country or someting though

MTecknology, yes. look in the handbook, there should be one or two more stpes with it. You'll provly have ot fix other errors later because of it however

saschahl, well.. right now i can get any info on that… do you have a little time and do me that favor??? just get me an ip and a port …please..

does anyone know how network devices get enumerated? i.e. eth1 or eth0 etc.

guys is there a tool in the portage tree that will allow me to recover deleted files?

sonicGB, one i tried tor.. but right now i think the best host is what saschahl said.. a proxy throuh other port rather than 80

ok

TheLorax, it's giving me an error about a read only file system… do I get to go through mounting it?

whats the name of the filesystem?
theorax just left

MTecknology, have you booted from the livecd or?

I booted into the hd first time

yeah, looks like you typed in an example into your fstab or something instead of what partition you need

how can I edit that right now?
I can use nano to open it… but not save

reboot with the disk and check your grub and fstab

basically depends on your filesystem

im no expert, but thats what it looks like to me

ext3

MTecknology, yeah, but have you booted it with the livecd now, if so then you need to mount the partition with gentoo on it and change the etc/fstab in there

so, use the cd, mount the partition, edit
Vinky, i haven't yet
I'll do it now

own_window_hints sticky

is there a reason my current kernel doesn't seem to have a /proc/config.gz ?

which is the best program to capture the screen in avi?

Hey guys.. can anyone make me a favor please… i need an open proxy wich i connect through any port rather than 80. I need it for web browsing, since my gateway has its port 80 screwed up.

found one: 133.1.16.172 port 3128
no warranty

ok, I'm booting to the cd

saschahl, ok.. many thanks any way.. will try it righ now.

goes through japan. :P might consider not sending sensitive information.

nah, Japan is fine…it's the SEAsian countries that have the wierd internet laws

saschahl, hehehehhe

hi guys

first thing you should do is to unmount the affected partition
magicrescure might help to recover the files

mind if anyone is free to try to help us we have some trouble trying to install gentoo with raid0 x.x

ishino, that's what i'm trying right now

Hi, all

ok
editied the file

i havent tried it with raid yet

definitely going further

bios detect two hdd like one with raid 0 but gentoo detect two hdds

ishino, it won't restore the name of the file will it?

probably not

Kivu, hardware raid or software raid ?

it's called ""fakeraid"" for a reason

0.0 (pci-e nv6600) by kernel, not

unlikely

hardware raid mattmatteh

Hey guys.. can anyone make me a favor please… i need an open proxy wich i connect through any port rather than 80. I need it for web browsing, since my gateway has its port 80 screwed up.

Kivu, if its hardware raid then gentoo should only see one drive. if it sees both then the hard ware raid is not working.

space why cant you use tor again?

mattmatteh its a hardware in a dell sc1425 10 min ago gentoo was detecting the raid correctly but now, no

exile, cause right now i can get any data through http. so i can google about it on how to install, configure.. etd
etc

the bios detect raid optimal status

how long should it take for xorg to emerge?

sorry.. "i can't" is what i meant

15-40 minutes, depending on your computer's processor

hmmmm
thats the only one i know that works in gentoo right now
i dont use regular proxies

exile, thanks ;-)

grey_wolf:Athalon XP 2ghz with 1gb ra

I finally have a working Gentoo install, even if it was just a vm

so… if i helped you install tor, would that work?

Kivu, i dont have any hardware raid, so i can not help much. but if you have hardware raid, then linux should only see one drive. anything else is software raid

that is fakeraid, try to not use it

Kivu, i did a quick google but didnt see what kind of raid that is

bios pretends that there is raid, linux doesn't believe such silly things

too bad my network connection isn't working

it's not really something you can put a number on. you can generally expect a half hour for xorg-x11 and you'll be close enough that it won't matter
bit's not really something you can put a number on. you can generally expect a half hour for xorg-x11 and you'll be close enough that it won't matter/b

omg, x.x

true matt

im gonna try with other controller

i'm using MD and i'm not terribly disappointed by it.

Kivu, another controller ?

linux can do software raid very well …

but tmrw my boss is gonna kick my ass if i dont have server runing x.x XD

software raid is like a winmodem

grey_wolf, MD ?

i *want* to get a 3ware controller, but i simply can't afford it. MD RAID-5 meets my needs.
ui *want* to get a 3ware controller, but i simply can't afford it. MD RAID-5 meets my needs./u

How long should kde-meta take would you say?

Kivu, if the "other controller" cost less than $400, it's probably also a fakeraid.

mattmatteh, yeah, and it is not really cheap :d

linux MD raid. the kernel's module.

* Please re-emerge x11-libs/cairo with the X USE flag set
how do i do that?

FOREVER. kde meta is big

grey_wolf, oh. thats what i have, i just call it software raid

anywhere from 3 to 12 hours.

I'd have said that hardware raid was like a winmodem - hardly likely to work!

Kivu, might want to use software raid in the linux kernel

exile, i even can emerge it. all the mirrors are http. and i think it would be a little tedious right now…

hmmmm

quite wrong. hardware RAID looks just like a SCSI disk to the OS

kk, im gonna try software raid
thank u very much guys

when it works, yes

USE="X" emerge cairo

when it doesn't there's always the support number to call.

I've just had a particularly bad run with various raid hardware

!use

oh?

did it work cheese?

hi everybody

employer too host your website with us - cheap prices to buy good hardware, endless battles with little-known second rate hardware… you know the deal

do you know something about the GWN? i didn't receive any gwn since 7th may

ohh. i'd just say "get 3ware" and expect it to work. anything else doesn't really seem to use true hardware raid.

I have an audio problem with my gentoo system. Something is listen to the microphone input, and echoing it back on the speakers. I cannot find it. Any way to tell what process has what devices open?

a friend of mine told me the gwn was paused till 2nd july but it's been some time since then and there is still no new gwn

They're short staffed at the moment. I think they're doing some reorganisation to try and improve it.

i have a similar problem, and it seems to be something in the capture subsystem listening to the output - a driver issue. i just turn down the capture volume and the echo mostly disappears.

when universities get money for hardware, they spend it all on laptops and ipods for their childr^H^H^H^H^H^Hresearch projects! :-/

AllenJB, thanks for that information. is there any website where the gwn team writes something about the ongoing changes?

212.77.192.61:21

Only planet.gentoo.org

My capture is at 0.

(aggregation of develoepr blogs)

well, hey, those dumb ki^W^Wresearch projects need attention.

what is the capture anyway?

exile, will do that

it's in your mixer control. in alsamixer, tab over to capture and turn the volume down on it.

you still there space goose?

exile, yes

or, turn down the main mixer and turn up the gain on your external speaker.

AllenJB, thanks for the hint. i didn't know planet gentoo yet but i will follow it to see if i will find something interesting

it's already at 0.

and still echoing?

i found a site, but i cant sendc you the page since im not registered

yes, unless I turn my microphone off.

the physical microphone or the microphone capture?

well, the green 'light' at the top of kmixer

exile, many thanks anyway dude. the proxy youi gave me seems to exist but is idle..

well, the green 'light' at the top of kmixer

on the output or input tab?

input.

ah.

127

exile, wow.. thank you.. let me try them all

yeah, i don't know. try opening gnome-volume-control - it has better control over capture on my system

exile, master of the open proxies :-)

ok… I messed up installing gentoo just a little bit. Is there anybody that can help me get my ethernet up?

this is a bit off-topic, but what schemes do you developers use to sync programming projects between workstation and notebook? My group uses svn for collaboration, but I'd like to have an equally useful scheme for my own systems. Is multi-tiered svn possible?

I'm booted into the actual system

is that in it's on package?
alsamixer show capture as 0.

nah, im no master. im a google slave

it's in gnome-media

too.

like i said, i've got no ideas beyond that

sonicGB,

why!? Boy, oh, WHY?! Why the *FUCK* did emerge call 'make clean' when I invoked it with 'emerge –resume'??!??!!?

exile, none of them…damn it. :-( really man.. thank you a lot.
exile, i better go to the guys home with a club.

High_Command, language … as in stop the F word

what makes yout hink it did?
it generally starts over on anything it didn't finish, as in, wipes out the dir it was compiling in and re-extracts the tarball(s)

curse like that again and I'll mute you for a day

well, I had 100MB free on the partition. Then I called 'emerge –resume' and magically I had 600MB free
guess it did that
how sad

yup. that happens. next time, don't stop emerge in the middle of a package.

nah, computer crashed

emerge can't know *where* to resume, so it just restarts to be on the safe side

does anyone have a suggestion to get a transparent terminal on my desktop? i've played around and can't seem to get it. i'm looking for something along the lines of this: http://gentoo-wiki.com/images/c/c8/GabiDain.jpg

theres no way to avoind it? some switch?
*avoid

man portage look under features.

not very intuitive, I mean, emerge –resume, c'mon

nedw, aterm supports transprancy

how would emerge know where to resume from?

i'm emerging aterm now

High_Command you could run the ebuild command manually on the piece it stopped on

and maybe there is a situation that would prevent resuming, how would you know?

i am also wondering how i could get it to be borderless and stay under all the other windows though

well, then I'd remove the work dir myself

is anyone here using portage with tmpfs?

cchildress building in tempfs?

yes

cchildress ya i've done it

did you notice much of a difference?

ccherrett, ya enough that i liked it

plain sad! thanks a lot y'all though!

did you use a script like the one on the gentoo wiki, or did you perm mount it at boot time?

I guess some folks just feel better if they have a good rant, no? :-)

i know i do
tho i normally rant to myself…
did you run into any problems with it?
besides running out of space…

hello

hello, magic_pinguim

ok…. I mounted my gentoo install, chroot to the install, 'emerge dhcpd', says it's installed. But when I restart into the system it says that dhcpd doesn't exist so I can't use the network

cchildress actually i never ran out of space, just make sure it's cleaning up the work during builds.

MTecknology, dhcpcd

what is the difference between gnome and gnome-light?

common problem… emerge… uhm… someone help me out here… what's the package for the basic system structure….?

mmaniaci light has much less packages
sonicGB, coreutils?

any functionality that I won't be able to have if I use light instead?

sonicGB, baselayout? binutils?

Or just less junk along with the package

well, i figured that it would do that by itself…is there something special i need to do to ensure that long sets of ebuilds don't overflow the work dir?

baselayout I think….?

Draconx, ty

, tdr: the dhcp client scripts break because something changed in the base system layout recently… rem-emerging that fixes it

cchildress test one that is small, like eject. if it cleans up, you'll be ok. just remember that if something fails to build, it may leave its work

gnome-light has a few less packages than gnome, but you can always emerge extra ones later

Awsome thanks yngwin
and thanks tdr also

oh it cleans up afterwards…it's just that some ebuilds need more space than i can give

ccherrett, if you have enough swap you should be ok. i've only done it on boxes with 4+ GB of ram

ahh…i'm working on a 2GB machine
can't afford a full 4
i suppose that if I could use a 2GB tmpfs then I'd be set
what about paludis? have you experimented with that? i'm really curious about it, but not sure that it's worth the work of migrating over and dealing with the bugs

huh, it's no use i have to ask some kernel hackers or vesa developer or kill bios vendors..

emerge sys-apps/baselayout will make the dhcp problem go away (on a new install)

definitely the bios vendors

sonicGB, aight, I'm taking a snapshot now to see if installing dhcpcd will fix it, else I'll try it

i'd start with phoenix, and move on to amibios

so I'm trying to add an overlay for google desktop
I stuck an x11-misc folder in my overlay directory

the variant of the problem I've experienced is that dhcpcd is there, all the scripst ~seem~ to be there, but they thrown an error about dhcp not being there when they start
I resolved it by updating baselayout

and placed the ebuild in a google-dekstop folder

i'm too

do I need to unmask it?

sonicGB, installing the right package worked
thanks though

Sorry folks.
Have any of you configured Postfix on Gentoo before? I can't find a spisific channel related to Gentoo and postfix.

I'm using postfix on gentoo, yeah

nm, found it

Okay, sonicGB PM for a moment, please? I'vegot something to ask you, it would be a bit more simple for me to keep up that way.
Talking to you directly here is a bit confusing with all the joins, parts, quits, etc.

hrm, portage tells me that there are no ebuilds that satisfy google-desktop

Hold on..I'll just qyer you.

in which category do i find the ov511 module in the menuconfig??

yet I have the custom ebuild in the overlay foder

tried searching on usb support but can't find it

Hyperion2010 did you construct the overlay correctly, make a group for it, then a package folder, then the ebuild inside that?

yelp
/usr/portage/local/layman/x11-misc/google-desktop/google-desktop-(some junk here).ebuild

hey

and /usr/portage/local/layman

can someone give me some advice please?

is specified in make.conf

Jedipottsy, maybe you need to ask a question before someone can give you advice

ok, i want to switch to fedora linux from windows for using Maya 8.5

why has nobody on the internet who speaks english run into the same error as me while running wine?
bad luck?
conspiracy?

purely because im dealing with large memory intensive scenes, and i want to reduce render times

Jedipottsy maya runs on linux

i tried ubuntu but its not much faster

tdr, do you have any other ideas for my overlay issue?

so someone told me to do a stage 1 gentoo instal

Jedipottsy, do not do a stage 1 install unless you are a gentoo ninja. do a stage 3 then emerge -e system … it'll give you the same thing

bad value (pentium-m) for -march switch

is a minimal cd with command line the only way to install stage 1?

I'm assuming I need to change that?

why use wine? — source of your problem, pure linux users won't have a use for it anymore

emerge -e?

Jedipottsy emerge -e system rebuilds the entire "system" or emerge -e world would rebuild everything

Jedipottsy, if you've never done a stage1, then you are cooked
how fast is your computer?

so the performance gains of stage 1 are negligable
core 2 duo, 2gb ram, 512mb 7900gtx

Jedipottsy, emerge -e after a stage 3 is the same thing: its all rebuilt for you

well it wouldnt take forever

its rebuilt but not optimzed

but it always seems like over kill to me

Jedipottsy, it's as optimized as the flags you set before you emerge -e

i play a game called Eve Online

Jedipottsy, and what is you question?

Jedipottsy, what do you think rebuilding does, it used the setting you specify to rebuild it

thats the only reason i need wine

ino it sound stupid, but im doing lots of renders which are taking 3-4 hours a frame, so saving 10s a frame is alot overall

either wine or windows. and its not going to be windows

Jedipottsy, if maya is only delivered as binary, there will probably no great performance benefit with gentoo

Jedipottsy windows is zero percent faster, i help support an entire reasearch lab that uses maya

ive done a stage1 before, however that was around 2004
do i stil have to use minimal cd or us there a GLI stage 1 cd?

smith_ it does help some. but yes it's binary and can't be tweaked alot
Jedipottsy stage 1 is not supported anymore

oh
ok thnx then, ill look into stage3 with emerge -e

multiseat is fun thing, but not so popular and easy, need some kernel and X patches. however, it works. i should go to sleep, have a nice day,my gentoo brothers 8

Jedipottsy too many circular deps and problems, the stage 3 + emerge -e is the way to go

mzbot, teach Jedipottsy about stage1

Stage1 is an old install method which is no longer supported. Please use a stage3 install for support. You can perform an emerge -e world after your stage3 install to get the same result.

Jedipottsy, Bingo.

hey all…..I'm missing a dep. called "gtkdocize"…..anyone have any idea where I can aquire it?

so can i also choose to not include apps in a stage 3?

I followed the portage overlay guide in the wiki, but portage still thinks that my ebuild doesnt exist

when you update world with emerge, what is the file that emerge looks at?

stage3 is quite minimal, just use it and don't make life difficult for yourself ;-)
/var/lib/portage/world ?

sorry, i mean is stage 3 like ubuntu where everything gets installed?

Anyone have recommendations on how to go about most efficiently changing a gid and uid?

DrEeevil, cheers

Jedipottsy, no it can be only a minimal system, with no gui at all

Jedipottsy, if you're only saving 10s per frame and it takes 3.5 hours per frame, you'll have to be continuously rendering for 52 days to see an hours improvement.

no, stage3 is the basic skeleton from which you can build a system
it's glibc, gcc, portage and a few other tools

yeah using a friends osx macbook pro (running slightly slower with 1gb ram) render times went down by about 15-20 mins a frame
so im hoping linux is better

do I have to cook up my own manifest and things for custom ebuilds?

thanks for all your help!

i wish portage had a progress bar instead of a bunch of code flying across my screen

If I install a program manually (via make install) and later need to build something else against it, portage wants to emerge the first program as a dependency. How do I prevent this?

heh, it's not possible

it is, but it would be unaccurate

exile, Yeah. The problem with compilation is it can be different every time. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4123211.html?sid=b1b6a02910d2c0df19e320a42f53882d has more information.

usually an emerge allows me time to sleep ;

every package designer would need to include progress output in order to get progress indication at all.

yeah, i know its a dream

mmm DrEeevil from my last question reguarding the world file, to share a portage directory with multiple computers would it be harder than using smb / nfs mounting?
exile, no, its an excuse to buy more expensive hardware

grrrrrr, what is up with this silly overlay

what can I do to see if my installation is detecting my video card correctly?

If I want to cahnge a bunch of uid's and gid's #'s is tehre an efficient way to do this or do I have to iterate through my whole filesystem with find to change the old id's to the new id's, for each change?

harlequin516, Why are you?

In this case, I manually installed fuse and ntfs3g, since the versions in portage are really old. Now I want to emerge ntfsprogs with the fuse flag enabled and not have the process overwrite fuse with the version in portage.
Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?

aleron, what do you mean, afaik gentoo uses a generic driver (ie vesa) for the install disc, then VGA for command line before you install xorg

greets
anyone know of a way to use nis or nmblookup from /etc/host.conf for WINS resolution on an old NT domain?
or, at the least, how to get WINS lookups for non-smb apps (such as Nagios for SNMP)

harlequin516, Because, yes, you will have to recurse through the entire filesystem to find the correct files to change.

I'm trying to cleanup my system. Yes I knwo this bears no impact on the running of my system, but I like to have my users with their own gid and uid such that they match.

I'm trying to get xorg working (which it isn't, and I'm not getting errors), so I….
nm, someone pointed out on my forum topic that my drivers are old *Blush*

aleron, what graphics card and what non-errors make you think its not working?

harlequin516, Some weird thing like find ./ -uid x | xargs…

still, out of interest, what drivers might be old?

8800GTX

sorry if that all came out as spam, I'm experiencing lag because I have to route this through houston to avoid a firewall

Yeah its taking forever. I am thinking about craeting a database and then indexing it to make this faster.

looks like the one I'm using (from portage no less) is 1.0.8776

mmmm, mind pointing me to the URL, i had trouble getting xorg on a 6100 yesterday, after installing nvidias drivers from there website (which had a different version number than that of portage) it worked perfectly

its the nvidia-drivers package

yeah I wouldnt mind reading the thread

yeah, sec

harlequin516, Mm… it wouldn't speed things up that much. You've still got to do the full index.

fragged, the latest nvidia-drivers are masked. They're in portage

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-569295.html
sorry for the noob question, but how do I temporarily unmask them so I can grab the latest version (from portage)?

cheers

Try taking a look at usermod -u to change UIDs.

aleron, add x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers ~x86 to /etc/portage/package.keywords and emerge

But even usermod won't fix the problem with the filesystem.

Bah, you're right.

is it safe to emerge something with an ~x86 when you have a ~amd64 system otherwise?

Hey THanks That's what I'm looking for

Glad that does it.

is there a way to emerge an unstable package with a portage command instead of editing that file?
something like USE"~amd64" emerge blahblah
?

/
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=183567

Good thing that version is still masked.

it will never be unmasked / fixed until nvidia realise that there developers suck
and release the source code

That would be the day… v_v

export ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~amd64;emerge blabh_blah

oh cool beans

Any idea on my portage problem?

exile, its not a great idea to do though, as it can break portage for future use i think

It is possible to recreate a private key with the public key ?

hrm, lets see if I can get X to actually start up this time

how might it break things?

The next emerge that depends on it will pull in the stable version.

if I log then I had to reboot because it froze again :P

the reason that all the unmasking has to be done in a file is so a user knows what he's doing

…and overwrite the unstable one.

Oh, I was told it would break stuff

in theory yes, practically no

I can see how it might break the package/dependants that you're installing, but how can it break portage?

anyone out there doing WINS lookups outside of SMB

not so bad, just nice to know

yes, I'm doing that

the whole system of asymmetric cryptography is based on that neat trick

DrEeevil, in theory ?! Why we can,t !?

computational limitation

exile, Don't specify accept_keywords on the commandline.

Hi all.

it would take more processing power than humanity has for some calculations, thus we consider them "impossible"

It's a Bad Thing (tm)

I am having problems emerging fvwm-themes. I get errored out after it can't find theme.cfg. Any ideas?

DrEeevil, ohh crap.. if I know the passphrase

so when I try to start X, it says no screens found. but I clearly have a screen defined in the file..any ideas fragged?

I have this strange feeling that you're in trouble :-)

DrEeevil, yess

There's lots of info on that here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography

do you know why it's a bad thing? the emerge manpage effectively says to do it that way…

whats the worst that could happen?

sonicGB, It does?! …..

yeah, thats where i first saw it, but i didnt understand it

aleron, your Xorg log will probably point to the problem.

sonicGB, When you specify anything on the commandline - use, accept_keywords, whatever, it doesn't get recorded.

oh nm..'screens found, but none have a usable configuration'

The next time you reinstall that package, it won't remember your changes.

yeah, thats exactly why i would want to use it

That's why /etc/portage/package.use and package.keywords exists.

in the MASKED PACKAGES section…. tells you how to fiddle ACCEPT_KEYWORDS for one of masked emerges

and the other files in there.

hrm, i think I forgot to load the nvidia kernel module now that I emerged the new version *whistle*

yup, the manpage also says that…
WINS resolution ?

does anyone know why I could only be able to "eject" an ipod i as root?

I keep on getting "there is no ebuild for 'google-desktop'" errors, despite the fact that it detects that there is one application to be installed

Try adding it to package.use, re-emerging it, and then delete the line if it doesn't help. The command line arg will work, but it's really hard to remember to specify it each time something depends on that package.

the device (/dev/….) belongs to root? put yourself in the appropriate group for mounting/unmounting things….

By default devices belong to root, and so can only be unmounted by root.

Hyperion2010, google-desktop?

aleron, mmm I just got no display from the drivers via emerge, after installing the drivers from nvidias website everything worked perfectly (although, now I find out there is an exploit in the drivers I may have to rethink stuff)

which group? I can do cd/dvds, I can mount the ipod, and I'm in plugdev and usb

hlieberman, yes

I'd have thought plugdev was it….

there is an ebuild for it

aleron, does X start if you replace the nvidia driver with vesa (if you built xorg with vesa support)

actually, hal does the moungting

Hyperion2010, We don't support overlays, sorry.

It's just not in portage.

unable to open `/dev/sda2'"

I know that
I was just wondering if I was doing anything wrong

i'd have to rebuild it with vesa (unless that was default), I don't have vesa in my USE

Hyperion2010, Don't think so. Check to make sure your overlays are setup properly.

ok

right now its telling me it couldn't load the nvidia k module, telling me I should make sure I actually have an nvidia gpu installed…im looking up the README atm

if an ebuild is in a folder, it should be detected by portage though yes?

aleron, I couldnt help you there, have you made sure that nv wasnt compiled in your kernel (and that i2c was, which is where I had major troubles once apon a time)

haha, got it working man

nice

so long as that folder is listed in PORTDIR_OVERLAY=""

after you re-emerge the new drivers..
..do a modprobe -r nvidia, then modprobe nvidia, then update modules, then try again

sorry, called away

aleron, is nvidia present when you do an lsmod?

yep
its working now, I just gotta install gnome now

yer, WINS address resolution using /etc/host.conf or some other lookup outside of samba

Does cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0 give reasonable info?

sec

/usr/portage/local/layman/x11-misc/google-desktop/google-dektop-1.0.1.0060.ebuild is not in a valid portage tree hierarchy or does not exist — error I get when trying to emerge from the folder

yep

/usr/portage/local/layman is listed as a portdir overlay

correctly identifies the model #, correctly identifies it as PCI-E as well
and of course, X is working now as well

mzbot, wiki Hyperion2010 overlay

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Installing_3rd_Party_Ebuilds

Cool. If it's working now you're probably in good shape.

thx

yep
just had to upgrade to the new drivers, then unload the old kernel module which was still in memory
and then load the new one
now to emerge gnome
what a beast

aleron, hehe I usually leave that stuff to process overnight.

I am having problems emerging fvwm-themes. I get errored out after it can't find theme.cfg. Any ideas?

next up is getting my audigy2 working
ugh, 266 entries to merge
time for some nethack I guess

paste the exact error line(s) somewhere (rafb.net/paste)

later all

another noob question..can I safely emerge something (like telnet) in one console while I emerge gnome in another?

yes

hawt

It makes those new dual/quad-core systems that much sexier.

what package is contains the man pages
?

man-pages

lol

Each package usually contains its respective man pages. A good collection is in the man-pages package, though.

aleron just make sure parallel emerges don't try building the same package at the same time, it tends to make it go boom

doesn't portage have locks to keep that from happening?

gimmie a minute

lacqui it'll crash your builds

mzbot, ping

pong

w00t

I know mine's always waiting for a lock if i try to do 2 things at once on the same tree, let alone the same package

Anyone know of a good eix tutorial?

darthmarth37, The man page is extensive. 1.5k lines.

was looking update the linux man pages. draconx probably knew that already as he might have seen that in the C channel

Ah.

oo my gentoo disk is nearly done burning

anyone have an idea about making the blender 2.44 ebuild obey CFLAGS?

greywolf7, Make sure to do an md5sum. It'll take a little time, but trust me. It'll save you a nightmare of tracking down a strange, seemingly random bug.

ok
bbiab

ok friends, someone maybe know where has gone framebuffer support in 2.6.21-ck?

can someone tell me where I might find information on SSMTP. Yes I know there is the gentoo wiki, but i'm looking for something higher up –like how it works and what it does…

'man-pages' has a lot

I manually installed fuse and ntfs3g, since the versions in portage are really old. Now I want to emerge ntfsprogs with the fuse flag enabled and not have the process overwrite fuse with the version in portage. Any ideas on how to make this happen?

eix –help
what makes you think it doesn't?

what version of ntfs-3g did you use?

reisio, doing a ps ax shows it is not using the options in my CFLAGS

there is not 'the gentoo wiki', FYI, only gentoo-wiki.com

1.710

but doing the same with 2.43 does shows the CFLAGS being used
reisio, it is also noticablelu slower the 2.43

good the more the merrier

maybe you should find out why it does that

I have been and not getting anywhere which is why I asked here

you should of made ebuilds and emplyed an overlay
employed*

No way comes to mind of just making portage ignore a dependency, though?

yes there are ways, man portage
look for the mention of package.provided

Gotta love man pages.
thanks

be careful though, I would fix it now by making the ebuilds
you could also check bgo the ebuilds may already be in there
if not, you can request them

bgo?

reisio, the only real thing I have worked out is if I try compiling blender 2.44 manually (outside of portage) then the CFLAGS are used

bugs.gentoo.org

ok

what is the difference between linux-headers and gentoo-sources / kernel sources?

Does man ebuild have enough info for one to make their first from scratch?

if a package is masked by corruption, is there anyway to force it to compile?

/join #gentoo-dev-help, /topic

re-digest it

never even heard of that

It's somewhere in ebuild, although I've never used it myself.

ah, it seems that i actually wants a manifest

One is headers, the others are sources.

Monkeh, aren't the heades included in the sources?

I believe so. The sources are not used for headers however. The headers package is.

re-sync?

okay, thanks!

lacqui, I just figured out what digest was used for :x
thanks

0 timed out."

wouldn't it be better if gentoo had portage servers that clients can query them, rather than downloading the whole portage tree and keep it local. at least give users the right to chose if they want to use local portage tree, or online portage tree

Wouldn't it be better to save expensive and rare bandwidth?

i think that would create a lot of traffic

check the WPA network configurations

you can make your own local portage mirror
GENTOO_MIRRORS="url"

and ofcourse, like very other problem I have with gentoo, its because I have misspelled something

At least misspellings are easy fixes.

well so far so good the cli installer is nuch like slacware in some ways not very hard to use at all

Good. Keep at it.

giving users the choice of querying portage trees, rather than storing the tree locally will save b/w

Is there any way to automatically run something after every emerge?

wow the live cd is quick

Something a la postsync.d, but post-emerge instead?

currrently, many users emerge –sync on daily bases, just to keep it updated when needed
the lag is horrible..

in "portage v2" you can

Ok… how?

first you have to switch to the "portage v2" :p
if you do it fine, theres docs about it
I don't recomend it yet

Any other thoughts?

by portage v2 I mean paludis
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Use_Portage_alternative_-_Paludis

Bah, I'll just write a shell function.

ya, kiss approach is always better

all most doen with cd install

How long does it take to emerge gnome!!!!
damn

Forever.
….mostly depending on your hardware and your USE flags.
How many packages is it pulling in?

I did already, cant fix it.

I went through and packed everything I need to move to my new house
it was something like 218

that's why I did not recomend it :p
it's faster, cleaner and sweet, but tricky

Ouch. That probably means you're merging xorg, as well. What processor(s) are you employing?

how can allow kde to "eject" usb devices (ipod)? Right now I can only do it as root

not much of a kde fan but I supose you need to be in plugdev

I am

darthmarth37, it's on a virtual machine. I'm giving it 512M and the processor i'm running on is an Intel Core Duo 1.96Ghz or something like that

plugdev unix group
check for any other similar group :p

It can unmount but not eject

darthmarth37, 63/310

oh… that's weird

yeah
maybe if I reboot it will fix itself :/

The lack of memory will be a big bottleneck. I'd give it a good twelve hours or so on my P4 3.0, but that's with 2 GiB of memory at its disposal. You're running dual-core, but also in a VM, so I'm not positive what you'll end up with.
If you can employ distccd on any networked machines that would really help speed things up.

pew pew

darthmarth37, basically the first core is for my system and the second winds up being reserved for vmware

You're in for a long haul.

i think ill pull gnome from the cd and save a vit of hastle

how do I do the distccd thing?

just do what i do, start emerge before bed

lacqui,
I was hoping to at least see it today

Try checking here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/distcc.xml and here http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Distcc_server_on_Windows and see if you find anythign useful.

74/310

whats the best way to install nvidia drivers on this jsut emerge nvidia ?

Most packages don't take very long, but some, like gcc, xorg, gnome-desktop, and openoffice, take _forever_.
emerge -av nvidia-drivers

thanks

i'll agree with openoffice, but xorg and gnome-desktop don't take forever hemselves
they just have so may deps

does gnome come with openoffice?

Try taking a look at the guides at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/.
no

MTecknology, emerge openoffice

nope, you get to emerge that separately

MTecknology, and that will take awhile, dont watch it :-D

i will that will help alot , i jsut read the install doc to start
bi will that will help alot , i jsut read the install doc to start/b

emerge app-office/openoffice-bin

a_lot

i'm having problem with io register and noop registered freezing up after I install gentoo on my amd 64bit anybody know what could be causing the freezing?

Yeah, X does pull in a lot of stuff.

lacqui, thats cheating

that's why i prefixed it with cheat

also, make sure your USE flags are correct, you wont want to rebuild openoffice… nor gnome

I guess it works, at least.

lacqui, :-D

but then, wehres the fun?
wheres&
wheres**

Skankerpotimous, I'm using this guide http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml

sn00p, no idea. perhaps gentoo-amd64 might help

I have the exact same USE

oh, no im just saying that you should be 100% sure of your use flags, since if you change one, you gotta rebuild lots of stuff

ya, but it's a pain when the only machine available to me at the moment is tied up with ebuilding
*emerging

i had to rebuild openoffice twice because of changed USE flags

Of course if you're like me and have doc enabled for everything, gnome never installs with all the USE flags the first time.

Skankerpotimous, so… I'll try to never change it?

and yet, it refuses to work on 64 bit

No, just include as many as you feel you will need to minimize the number of re-emerges you will have to do.

nah, use /etc/portage/package.use and change globally USE flags you DO want globally

Skankerpotimous, ???

haha, after i found out using -doc removes dumb help files and decreases on about 20 packages, i was so happy with the USE flags

Look here http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml for USE flag descriptions.
Oops, that was for MTecknology.

oh, i use equery uses (app) :P easier for me

you could also use something like ufed, for setting global USE flags

so when there's a failure during an emerge, do you just run the emerge command again and hope this time it works?

i don't know if there's an equivalent for packages

damn, still rsynking

depends on why it fails.

emerge –resume

Fix the problem it states when it died, and then emerge –resume.

is it possible to set the host name at boot depending on what ethernet card is present ?

darthmarth37, holy shit
lotta stuff

usually a message will tell you what happened

and if oyu dont fix the problem, it wont finish emerging

?

it was a *.ebuild line

Oh, yeah.

..from a sh script I think?

also, if you're emerging a bunch of packages and one fails, try emerge –resume –skipfirst

yeah, it was an emerge on gnome
i'll try that, thanks

84/310

but if you skip a NEEDED dep, you'll fail your emerge later on, and if you skip it again, your program wont work

i have a script that runs whatever emerges i ask it for, resuming when required

probably, it depends a lot

usually used for doing update world

so should I try to do that individual package again by itself, then resume the bigger one?

using only –resume or –skipfirst?

If you do emerge -av, you get a chance to look at the use flags that are enabled/disabled for the packages that will be merged, so you can alter make.conf and packages.use accordingly, and repeat until you are satisfied with the results.

does anyone here know how to get open office writer to check spelling?

i use –resume –skipfirst. –resume by itself will try to keep emerging the same package over and over until it works

if you use –resume –skipfirst on a failed dep, it might break the program, libs and you might need to do lots of reinstalling later, that isnt a good idea

Definitely use the description page only as a reference; don't read from top to bottom. *shudders*

bah, how do you emerge an ebuild?
its complaining saying its not a valid package atom

where is firefox installed? i'm trying to install flash using the installer script but i don't know where to get to firefox's installation path

i'm usually installing several things at once, not necessarily deps

emerge -n portage-utils && qlist mozilla-firefox

what are you trying to emerge?

the best to do on a failed dep, is remove the USE flag that pulls it, fix the problem or emerge it separately

best to use netscape-flash, though, not do it yourself

oh then nvm, just that when its a emerge -auDv world, its not the best option

emerge netscape-flash will do the whole thing for you

so, you're suggesting that i drop what i'm doing and just do emerge netscape-flash?

that's usually what i do after

x11-libs/gtk+-2.10.11 (thats what failed just now while trying to do 'emerge gnome')

ah, thanks darthmarth37

Yes.

basically

ok

ah :P then nvm

mount /dev /mnt/serverdeboot/dev
like that ?

Eek. I just tried sound on this new box (which has an intel hda onboard sound thing) and i only get sound out of the right channel and the left channel has an earkilling high pitched squeal. any ideas?

add '-t bind' and that should work.

when i ssh in.

but I don't know if that will do what you need it to, it may

this one is for VMs and samba ..

Is there anyone else that get's "GPG error [path to repository] etch Release: Unkown error executing gpgv"?
Now I've just reinstalled the whole system. Have debians repository

reinstall gpgv
all i got in the last week was a new metapackage
wait .. are you connecting from linux or win32 boxen ?

Dark-Fx: mount -t bind /dev/ /mnt/theserver2/dev/ does not work

I am trying to mount my hard drive under /home/user/mountpoint, with fstab entry /dev/sdb1 /home/user/mountpoint ext3 defaults 0 2, however the /home/user/mountpoint gets owned by root, while i want to be able to read and write to it as user. what do i need to change ?

http://blog.thedebianuser.org/?p=155

have you tried changing the permissions on the mount point?

it is owned by user before the mount, as soon as i do mount -a, it gets owned by root

hi

short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during `./usr/share/doc/nero/Manual-Fra.pdf')

might this be a error in the package or some fs-error?

what happens when you chown it while mounted?
there are options in mount to change the umask etc, man mount for though

hmm have not tried that, let me try that

oh lol.. I suck. forget what I said

ok that lets me rw on it now, i am wondering would it allow that after reboot or do i have to do everytime i reboot

but I only think those are needed if the fs doesn't support permissions like fat
I think that should stick, the only fses that are troublesum are those that doesn't suppport permissions really
those that don't

fingers x

I read that as "/me fingers x(as in x11)"
too much teesside tin tin for me..

teesside tin tin?
what is that?

tin tin dubbed by a guy from boro, you tube it if you're into bad language

does anybody know lirc version is needed for 2.6.22?

generally i just get the source and compile it against the kernel headers
unless that has changed

I have some questions relating to packaging and policy for getting something into contrib. Is there a separate channel for such things, and if so, where?

!mentors

mentors is probably Please /msg dpkg mg and/or try http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/ and/or try #debian-mentors on irc.debian.org, or http://mentors.debian.net/

That's the one - thank you

afaik, sometime around 2.6.19 there was a change in the kernel….
linux/config.h: No such file or directory

oh…sorry man, haven't used it since then

lol, i mean fingers cross

you have the linux-headers package for your kernel version?

no, there is no package for my kernel, but i have matching headers.
I was told linux/config.h is not present anymore in recent kernels.

try modifying it to use linux/autoconf.h instead

previously

err, linux/autoconf.h

is there something like windows movie maker for Linux?

oh sorry, i ve recentrly installed an apache server into a chroot and i just would like to know if i have to install mods like php into that chroot, too. and how

I'm trying to complie a source-package. And I get an error that says: "configure: error: newly created files is older than distrubuted files!" Anyone know how I can fix this?`

fix your clock…

i'd think you'd need to install php in the chroot jail

rabies - How? Debian should take the bios-clock on install?

!tell noesc|barbar about set time

so how do i do that with apt-get ?

depends on your timezone. ntp is a good program for setting your clock via the internet

or what's the point of having a jail if one can escape it through php being used outside of it?
unless you have apt setup inside the jail you can't, you just do it by hand

rabies / karsten thanks.
Autoconfig is allways good :P

my disk is reading close to 500KB/s on an "idle system" any ideas how to further diagnose what program is the culprit?

thanks

hello, i have a pent1 with a very minimal install of Etch on it; when it sits for a few minutes the monitor goes black, until I move the mouse. How can I prevent this so that it always displays?
this is with Fluxbox

xset, tset, xscreensaver-demo
RTFM on those.

ok thanks!

xset == X display properties, tset == console, xscreensaver-demo is the configuration utility for the usual X screensaver package.

ok cool, thats exactly what i needed. i have feh running for a photo slideshow frame that i am making, and i don't want it turning off. thanks again!

'xset -dpms' should disable all xset dpms ("Energy Star") settings.

yeah? I'll have to try that one.

How long before the screen blank?

is there a good zerocopy/disk image program for debian? My disk in my laptop is loosing it and I want to make full copy of it to new disk which I want to replace the old one with…

not sure, maybe 10m?

Doesn't look as if there's a way to query the xset timeout, xscreensaver will show. Yeah, 10m is pretty common.

i'd like to turn off xscreensaver, so thank you for the tip

xset s off

most people use dd to make complete copies as far as I know

directly?

Any suggestions for faster booting? I've tried hard to keep the install as minimal as possible, but its a pent1 and it takes about 6-8 min to boot into X

for a disk image: 'cp' or 'dd' on the partition, for contents, I'd recommend either tar or cp (on the directory).

replace your /bin/sh - install something like 'dash'

yeah? great thanks!

that's one relatively safe way that saves some time

karsten, does cp include all the hidden files and all the stuff??

will it read .bash_profile at login?

what happens if i mount a new /etc over /etc

Anything that's sitting for a while at boot time? If you're non-networked, you may invoke several network timeouts, though those seem fixed now.
Invoked properly, yes, but I prefer tar.

zOap my advice is google for "dd copy hd" or something like that, I think you'll find lots of hits then

karsten, ok. I'll try it thanks

i don't see anything killing time, no. It is networked not but not likely once its finished, unless i need access to it for adding photos or something

your login shell should be /bin/bash, not /bin/sh

cp -rpgux
oh no wait debian uses a old cp

hardcampa, ok, I'll try that one too. thanks

so cp -rpux

so that question is irrelevant..

so… huh? repplace my user's shell with /bin/dash ?

i never suggested that

lol ok well… "replace your /bin/sh - install something like 'dash' "

from root of partition being transferred: 'tar cvf - . | ( cd newpath; tar xpf - )

karsten, thanks

/bin/sh is not your login shell, it probably has nothing to do with your users default shell

found a good page otherwise for you : http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Dd

so valdyn you're suggesting that i do what with dash?

hardcampa, thanks

np was curious myself

hardcampa, hehe, lol, good one then

or what unsolo just said, I think. The tar trick is an old-school trick for copying a directory tree to a new location. From your root partition, omit /sys, /mnt, /media, and /proc, but create those directories on the target (just leave 'em empty).

karsten, oh, okei.

You _can_ use dash as a login shell, but it'd be pretty annoying. It's a good shell to use for your scripts though.
POSIX compliant Bourne implementation.

so, if i install dash and link /bin/sh to it, then the system will use Dash at boot up and it may go slightly faster, yes? am i following now?

just to replace /bin/sh to speed up booting. Im not suggesting to change your login shell

ok gotcha i think. thanks!

right, except that you do not touch /bin/sh manually

oh. ok so how do i point the system to dash?

'dpkg-reconfigure -plow dash', if simple installing that package does not ask you

hmm.. ok thanks *again!*

Possibly. You're running a lot of shell scripts at boot, I'm really not aware of dash being markedly faster than bash, once the executable's been cached, most of that delta should be noise.

mind, dont expect to much from that hack, its just a bit faster

You've benchmarked this?

sure anything helps tho!

somebody can give me a recomendation for a scanner?, I will scan 600, 000 documents :-S, and I need a good scanner that can have a document output in PDF Format

There's also "upstart" which is an init replacement Ubuntu uses, not available for Debian yet.

no, and i would expect much less on an actually somewhat modern system.. but a p1 with so few ram..

i also saw this morning an article on initng, any thoughts there?

Another option is to try launching X sooner during boot. My experience has been that this doesn't work. It's normally a S99 script, scripts are run in ASCIbetical order numbered 01 - 99

singnificantly faster, won't work nice without you fixing services manually

yeah, actually my current setup starts X in its .bash_profile after rungetty autologs in the user
i should do it differently maybe?

that's funny

oh?
thanks!

yea you should use something like xdm

You also want to see how much of boot time is in BIOS. You can sometimes skip BIOS HW inits/scans, particularly SCSI bus, for faster boot. I've got servers which take 5 minutes to get to GRUB.

its my googling skillz at work i guess. it functions, so i used it.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=faster+debian+boot

its not really bad for a single user system.
but its a hack for something that has nice solutions already

but if i started X at S50 i might be a biut better off?

… unless you want to run just at console and find yourself running X when you don't want to.
You can try that. It might break, just change it back to defaults in that case. Experiment with different values.
I'd try 89 79 69 59 49, etc.

sure

I start gdm at 25 here

too bad initng is so flaky

i would consider a distro that is particularily for small systems like yours.

\amethyst: I've tried low values and found X borked, haven't retried lately, current uptime is 36 days, so it really doesn't matter that much.
Getting swsusp working properly is a real bonus.

I just installed etch on an old thinkpad that needs a pcmcia ethernet card, and the card shows up under lsmod but the ethernet adapter does not. then under ifconfig I DO see the ethernet adapter with the static settings I specified but I have no network connection

lsmod just lists devices. Drivers are a totally independent matter
ops, mindfart. lsmod lists no devices at all

is it pcmcia or cardbus?

heh thanks, so eth0 won't show up if it's pcmcia?
pcmcia

pcmcia - isa, cardbus - pci

well i've looked into DSL and a few others (antiX) but they're all almost huge compaired to a minimal debian setup.

when I install ntp and adjtimex. Does the programs run automatic or do I have to configure it first and then start it?

lsmod lists no devices at all

OK, so if I were to link startx (?) to S79 or whatever, does it run then in the background?

why dont you install xdm?

because i don';t know what it is!

!xdm

i guess xdm is the X windows login screen you might see every time you boot up. If you don't like it and want to just boot into console mode, you can read /usr/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ for a full explanation, or just 'dpkg –purge xdm', or 'apt-get remove xdm' (yes it's safe to remove
task-x-*)

when you plug the card in you should see some output in dmesg about the card insertion and then maybe a driver claiming it

ok well i get that xdm is the x display manager, but what benefit does it have?

what package has the xorgcfg?

good afternoon — I know how to do this without the package manager (slackware user for 10 years) but I'm trying to do things in a way which keeps the debian subsystem happy… I have a pl2303 usb serial port that works in winxp on the box but not on Kubuntu (I know, not debian, bear with me) on
the same box
it reads spurious 0xff 0xfe 0xff.. transmitting's fine

if it's listed in ifconfig but not working you probably have a configuration problem rather than a non-working card/driver

Hey.

hah, I unplugged the cable and plugged it back in, did ifdown, ifup and now it works

I must say, I'm very impressed with Debian so far.

maybe the cable just sucks

so anyway I was going to try and fix this. I can download and build kernels in my sleep, but I'm not sure how to go about it in a debian-friendly way

Maybe you have a BOFH running your network, and he's unplugging and plugging your switch port to annoy you.

if I'm running a linux-image-2.6.20-16-lowlatency pckaged kernel, how do I grab the source that built that kernel and then compile it?

or the PHY on the card is shit

sadly .. we'll have to redirect you to #ubuntu
or #kernel or ##linux

that depends on where you got that kernel from

or you can install debian

its certainly not from debian

ok, ubuntu's significantly different from debian in this respect? It's not the kernel compilation that's the hard part, it's trying to grab the source/patches/configuration that matches what I have now

why dont you ask in a ubuntu channel?

I know the kenrel is not… but I figured the method to generate packages is from debian, and that's what this is about :-)
I will, thanks

for an ubuntu compiled kernel yes ..

it doesn't matter if they're exactly the same, ubuntu isn't supported here

I'm having one problem though… I'm running Warsow, and it hangs when running the demo, and occasionally during the game.

argh .. games!
the game hangs .. or X does ?

fair enough, thanks guys

Um, X, and then I can't switch consoles.

!dbugs 435468

I can turn the computer off with the power button, though.

4

now .. i'm not an expert in games .. but doesn't DRI seem important there ?

IT's not that.

do files in cron.d have to be executable

look /var/log/Xorg.1.log (i think that's the name)

Well, lemme check. Warsow did start.

instead of powering down, ssh in from somewhere

whats the lightest way to monitor bandwidth of ip 's ?

they dont have to be, and they cant be run

Yeah, yeah.

an iptables idn of thing
or something like ipfm that uses pcap

you mean measure throughput between host and clients?

i mean i have 15 ip's on my interface and i want to see how much each ip uses

iptraf?

your hardware could be getting hot, might not be a software problem

!bts

bts is probably the Bug Tracking System for Debian packages, http://bugs.debian.org/ or to go directly to the bug page for a particular package/bug, try http://bugs.debian.org/packagename or http://bugs.debian.org/bugnumber apt-get install reportbug, and check out querybts too. Unstable users are required to check the BTS, useful for sid: apt-get install apt-listbugs, or apt-get install apt-listchanges

Well it was only on for a little while, and it hung both under Gentoo and Debian at the exact same point in the demo.
I think it's a bug in the graphics driver.

what chipset?

Intel 945GM.

probably not a bug, just that chip is slower than roadkill

Um, it did not behave like that. It hung, and I couldn't switch consoles, or kill X, or see anything.

more than likely it's a bug in the driver

Yeah… are there really new ones I can try?

yea i dont know im open to anything just the lightest thing

you're using a fairly recently released version already

all i need is how much bandwidth nothing more so whatever can get it done in the lightest way

hmm

as nice as it is to have an intel card with free drivers, they still have issues

Of course.
But I get great battery life too ;-)

hehe
you could try removing some of the effects in the game ?

The intel chips are fine for 2D..

and you can use them for most games

The 80 GB hard drive on my server is nearly full. I want to repartition it so I can put all of my media on one partition and the OS on another, instead of having everything on one partition. In order to do this, am I going to need a lot of free space for buffer/overhead or can I do it fine w/
gparted even if theres only 11 GB free space?

when i was still a gamer .. i had a game where i had to kill 50% of the effects to get past one point in the game .. the rest of it worked fine

They're all off, I think.

(that was windows)

How can I install a specific version of a package?

I think I can actually render in software quicker than the i9something in this laptop can

you'll probably need at least as much free space as the size of smaller partition

i don't render blender stuff anymore

\amethyst: i'm not quite followign you

since you'd be resizing the existing partition, creating a new empty one, and copying files over

\amethyst: oh i see
\amethyst: so it cant just move the mount point onto the new partition on the fly or soemthing
crap.

actually .. i haven't done rendering since i was using a matrox card

Now i have to transfer some 58 GB of umm… "media" onto another machine
yippi

media ?

I meant using the software GL render-er opposed to the DRI fancy shiny one

erm .. "media"

hehe

do you have a spare you can plug in temporarily

\amethyst: nope

porn and warez

i'd have to see what you're rendering to comment

its mostly warez
no porn…yet :P

glxgears benchmark time..

if you're going to be serving warez, you need a bigger hard drive than 80GB

i can play nexiuz on my laptop with an i855 or 830 .. and it's playable

\amethyst: erhm, i'm not serving it, it's for my LAN only
\amethyst: but yeah… i do need a bigger hard drive thats all i could come up with for now though

get an external USB drive .. problem solved

yeah too bad i dont have the money to cough it up… college makes you poor

at least dual head works..

i guess im just gonna have to plug in a cat5 onto this laptop and move it all here temporarily

borrow a friend's ?

hello every

no .. no radius help today!

:p
it's not for radius :p
other thing ^^
what the method for kill pid ? .. but my problem i have remove ( make clean ) and delete folder .. but the problem the proccess continu to run .. i have test with killall "name_of_process" but don't work
maybe if i reboot it's ok

hi, i have alot of device under lvm2, 8 disks, i have just added an USB external disk (shows up in dmesg properly) how do i mount it, i mean /dev/what?

but i don't want rebbot i haven't save my iptables rules ..

kill -9 ?

mount /dev/sd?1 /mnt

thank a lot abrotman :p :p :p

usb mass-storage devices are presented as scsi disks

moshii, yes but what number, how can i find out i.e. doe sin dmesg this tell me the right number? scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

look in /dev/disk/by-id
or /dev/disk/*-usb-*

you should see messages in dmesg about letting the device settle and then reading the partition table..

DrEeevil well i want to keep the roll my own part low as there are so many small things to consider im wary of

see the links listed in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-523629-highlight-vlc+ffmpeg.html for more

anyone know of a framework for fully automatic gentoo installation and maintenance (updates) of multiple machines? i'm looking for something similar to debians FAI (in conjunction with a local pkg mirror). we're considering to switch our workstations to gentoo but i haven't found proper maintenance tools, yet…

it's not a good idea to run as root

whoops

vosixl, My English ….. :P

I forgot to switch to a user. But my question is quick nonetheless
bI forgot to switch to a user. But my question is quick nonetheless/b

thanks bit' ^^

could anyone reccomend a good graphical frontend for wpa_supplicant in xfce4? Google isn't helping me much here, it only brought up one for kde, and I'd like to avoid brining in kde packages just for that

shouldn't be hard to write some wrapper scripts

just compile wpa_supplicant with the gtk USE flag enabled ?

e.g. cron running emerge –sync && emerge -upNDv world, so you see what needs updates
fully automatic … not sure what exactly you want

are they all the same architecture
?

friendly12345, yes, all x86

er, the gtk use flag has been enabled on my machien for some time. Does that bring in one, and how do I access it?

vosixl, Hardly anyone does that in irc though. So, don't sweat the small stuff.

wpa_supplicant_gui something ?

Ok!

well, if it did indeed bring its own frontend I'll go looking for it. For the time being I'm going to switch to a user account. Thanks for your help

DrEeevil, well, i want to keep the "roll my own" part low as there are so many small things to consider. i'm wary of automatic world-updates on production hosts (and servers). i want to cherry pick the updates. for debian we can simply push new pkgs to the hosts by putting them on our local mirror (which is the only one that our hosts are using). is there a way to do something similar in gentoo?

it's possible to set up a local mirror

hmm, you could use a binpkg host and only use binpkgs compiled on one test-machine

DrEeevil, friendly12345 sounds interesting. how do i get the hosts to automatically pull and install new binpkgs? (rsync?) is there any documentation about such a setup? is anyone actually doing it in production or should i rather stick with debian?

does anyone here use evdev for their mouse driver?

are you having problems with debian now?

no, he's asking if there's such a way to do what he's asking in gentoo, or rather should he just stick with debian for the time

somewhat related: you may be interested in using glsa-check to only get security related updates

"cron"

Hi, I am not able to mount reiser image as loop, could anyone advise on this? Is tehere any reason why reiser images would not mount with loop?

you sound like a debian user ;-)

i've had my fair share of it

agressive

and you still recommend it to people looking for alternatives?

last debian machine i had was running 2.1 …

I'm evil, what do you expect ;-)

o_gz, minor annoyances (old software versions so we have to mix in our own etc.). gentoo just feels better on the desktop but well, i need to see if it can be as maintainable as our debian setup…

you misunderstand.

ssh+screen, cron, mail - what more does one need? ;-0

generally, if i go the binpkg way, is there a safe way to have the clients really pull all dependencies or will i have to plan for revdev-rebuild and stuff?

if you build it all on the test machine, then package it up, all dependencies will already be packaged

DrEeevil, i have rolled such things myself before. but this is for 30 workstations, so i'd prefer something tried & tested. also stuff like different machine profiles etc. can quickly become a headache when not someone has put a lot of work into it.

I don't quite see why you would have any revdep-rebuild concerns, why do you think it breaks?

Tidus, sounds good. i have never worked with binpkg before, thats why i'm asking

If you install Xyz packet compiled with lib 2.5, but doesn't install lib 2.5 you will have a problem

Miravlix, well, under normal use (emerge) i have to do the revdep-rebuild quite often (and have seen it break, too). having to do revdep-rebuild on all workstations would definately be a showstopper

are all the workstations on similar hardware?

yes

Tidus, yes that should not be a problem, its all x86

actually, why do you want to change from debian (just for curiosity)?

Hmm, problem here is that revdep-rebuild doesn't create a new package it just overwrite and existing one

i'm afraid you misunderstand. is all the hardware like nearly identical…

I do not know if that is detected

you could revdep-rebuild then binpkg all the rebuilt packages and distribute them

Tidus, ahh.. well it's reasonably similar.. some kind of machine profile would be required though

how do you automate the package distribution?

How, the client machines wont know the difference between the installed software and the packages

very low risk of breakage

simple solution. compile your packages for the slowest processor you have out there, that way it should all work on all the machines
and use a generic kernel

How do you detect the difference between package-1.0 and package-1.0?

lukas__, well, i like how many things in gentoo "just work" after emerge (unlike debian). the only thing holding me back is the management tools. in debian its dead-simple to setup a local mirror and control it all. if i can solve that in gentoo i think we'd try a switch…

meh, just have a push directory and client-side logic that installs anything from that directory

Tidus, cpu shouldn't be a concern, it's all i686. machine profiles are necessary for s-ata vs ide, gfx drivers, sound drivers…

hence the genkernel

you'd definately have to treat such things differently, but it wouldn't be rocket science

I admit making a install everything system, but that sounds pretty horrible
I can't quite see how to maintain sutch a system

you're being a bit obtuse

What if the computers get out of sync and you can't update them all that week

I'm saying *just* for revdep-rebuilt packages

yeah sure or maybe your not as smart as you think and haven't considered everything

Garibaldi, well, i know, i already *have* built my own linux/gentoo install cd (pop it in, it pulls a disk image host from a server and writes it to the local disks). its the later maintenance (keeping those machines in sync) that's harder to solve.

possible, but unlikely

a standard genkernel will run on anything down to a 586 if i remember right, and has modules for all hardware built as well as the initrd to load the modules that's needed at boot

what I'm suggesting is you have the normal case for upgrades, like you'd do normally

in short, the same way every other distro does it… generic kernel with hardware detection scripts

and you'd have a special, separate place for packages that were revdep-rebuilt
if a binpkg exists in the special place, install it w/o question
otherwise, do a normal upgrade

What if computers doesn't get updated.

ok, I see what you mean

what exactly are you trying to accomplish? If the machines are are identical as far as make.conf /etc/portage/package.* then all you need to do is emerge –sync and they will be in "syns"

Maybe it's out for repair or the worker doesn't turn it on

Tidus, well, i too think the machine variation is solvable (there's also things like fstab to consider, hda vs sda etc.). as said, my major concern is how to put tested package on a central host and have them safely installed on all clients. if binpkg can do that i might give it a try…

then emerge -uDNa world

Then you suddently need 2007-28-22-forcedbinpackage 2007-xx-yy-forcedbinpackage

then you'd have to handle it separately

man make.conf … it says something about a binpkg path, then man emerge for the flag to use binaries only

qpkg packagename

hmm.. well, guys, thanks for all the advice. i think i'll take a close look at binpkg and figure out if it can do the trick for us. i'm still not quite convinced (there's a reason why debian has special tools for this) but hope i can work it out.

but such a case would depend on your environment. If you've got people turning machines off, that's a problem either way you look at it

Garibaldi, well, the debian boxes simply have an apt-get update;apt-get upgrade in cron. should be easy to do that with qpkg as well but i guess i have to rsync the pkgs over manually.

Nono the binpackage system supports a file host

ahhh okay

PORTAGE_BINHOST

In an extreme case, you could have separate folders for each machine, which contain links to the actual files. When a machine does this special upgrade, it removes its file.
that way, if you have a mystery machine off in some other world and it comes back, it will still get any pushed files it missed
(and the other machines won't relive the push experience)

Garibaldi, yes, that's the kind of magic that FAI can do and that i don't feel like building myself (because it's not easy to get right)

You have the binhost on a web server, then your machines out and about can update themself too

doesn't seem so hard to me :-)

Still, there is config file update concerns and there is nonversion changed files

Garibaldi, build it, release it, become famous

heh, there's no so much to build

Miravlix, yup right.. and i haven't even thought about the config file issues ugh

but I will be doing so within the next year or two

Garibaldi, then build it, release it, become famous. call it FAG or so (fully automatic gentoo)
i'm sure i'm not the only one who would like to run a set of gentoo machines in a controlled environment.. right now it feels like gentoo is more for the individualists (home desktop)
i think even in the blurb it says "no gentoo machine is like another". which, imho, is more a bug than a feature

I've not had much trouble running a bunch of servers, 30 still sounds manageable to me

i hope it stays desktop oriented unlike much of the mainstream lunix

&& rm $i; done

it becomes what people make of it

s/HOST/HOSTNAME/

DrEeevil, managable is a relative term.. the little things sum up and stuff like installing a new desktop should not be more work than popping in a cd and walking away (we're at that point with debian now and i will definately not go back)

can be done

easily
there's all sorts of ghosting applications
could you not use one of those?

Garibaldi, well, bad example on my part as i have already solved it even for gentoo…

hi! is it possible to symlink remote host directory?

"even for gentoo" as if Gentoo is some horrible case :-)

Garibaldi, no, i meant it like "even for gentoo where FAI is not available"

is there a way to hop into a running session with freenx? it seems that there may not be

is it possible to symlink remote host directory?

lng, no

here's another one… when I emerge –search I am not getting the latest result that I can see from the mirror (i.e. there is a version3 nxserver-freeedition on the mirror but emerge shows 2.1)

is the later version masked ?

um
i'd h ave to ftp in to check?

thoraxe, you can also ls /usr/portage/…
if you have synced recently

oh
maybe i need to sync

thoraxe, eix can show you all versions that you have in the tree and if they are masked

eix?

Hi! I cant find a man page for ping. Why is that?

thoraxe, yes

i'm guessing that is a program

anyone here using TMDA?

wep, i tried but it sucks because it can eat bounces…

Because no one has filed a bug report, to get it in the main man page archive
or in iputils where the binary is.

Why fill a bug report for that? Does't seem like a bug (Am not so familiar with the bug system).

I've got a wireless card that I simply can't setup. is it possible that there are certain cards that linux doesn't support?

hi folk, i'm experiencing some strangeness with binary packages. specifically it seems some symlinks aren't correctly created (they're just missing).

It's a bug allright, the system shouldn't have ping installed without a man page

Maybe it's time for me to learn the bug system and fill a report.

Seems all of iputils man pages is missing

/etc/mail/spamassassin symlink simply doesn't exist.

Hmm?

i just did emerge sync and then emerge search. one package now shows up as masked, but the version of nxserver-freeedition that is shown to me differs from the latest version available on the mirror that I have in my make.conf

that specific symlink is created in src_install() in the ebuild using dosym, but it seems to not land in the tbz2 …

not so fast …
bug 158660

https://bugs.gentoo.org/158660 nor, P2, All, madman2003@gmail.com-base-system@gentoo.org, RESOLVED, FIXED, net-misc/iputils-20060512 fails to build manpages

"no manual entry for ping"
that's the box i just built

yes, and there is a reason for it

Miravlix, known issue?

to keep hax3rz from DOSing j00r pr0n?
heh

Is a Macmini (Powerpc) a good machine for a quiet little java server hosting running gentoo?

yes

I think kerframil gave you a bug code for it?

This mught be a little off, but I'm trying to put windows on another partition and I wonder what FS is best for the swap partition. I think ntfs is good for root

Thanks!

nxserver-freeedition-3.0.0-r2 is on the mirror but emerge –search is showing 2.1.0
so i'm not sure what's up with that
maybe i have to install 2.1 before i can update to 3.0?

yes. unfortunately, there are a truckload of deps required just to build the manpage. so you have to set USE="doc" if you want that (may have been fixed in ~arch, not sure).

Everytime this box reboots, it loses everything in /etc/resolv.conf and timezone configuration

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164655 — never mind. found my problem.

if you're using a dhcp client, you can set something like dhcp_eth0="nodns"
see /etc/conf.d/net.example

I'm not.
The IP remains set statically.

would there be a reason why i'd manually have to download an ebuild?

And even then, it would not fix the 5 hour clock skew I get.

eats bounces?

if you say something is writing over resolv.conf at boot, then a dhcpc client is the most logical suspicion to have.
I cannot think of any other explanation.

I'm not saying something is writing over it. I'm saying that it does not save the changes I've made from one boot to the next. There is no dhcp client even installed on it.

i get this very subtle high-pitch squeal when my nvidia-driver kicks in on my 8600M GS (Asus F3SV laptop) — is this damaging my screen? the display *looks* fine…

And you're also ignoring the other symptoms.

i am building a custom circuit to do some work. i need to write a client to run the circuit. is there a good/bad language/toolkit to sieze direct control of the parallel port?

and i can't really hear it anymore, it's mainly when it first switches to X

Hi, I can't remember who it was now, but someone mentioned that wpa_supplicant comes with its own graphical frontend. I did a little searching, and it looks like they were talking about wpa_gui which doesn't seem to exist on my system despite having the gtk USE flag enabled. What might I be missing?

wep, you send mail to A, the mail bounces, tmda sends a challenge, you never get the bounce

is nvu dead? o_O

Hazard, maybe your /etc is located on a RAM disk?

why do you say that?

That's a good idea, but it's on /dev/hda3

qt3 or qt4 USE flag?

last update is in 2005, and .. well.. it's not that good

what is on /dev/hda3? your entire root filesystem?

I don't think I set either of those. What do they do, and should I enable one or both?

And my apache config isn't being reset with the others.

gtk qt3 qt4 use flag ?

just by opening one of my project files and saving it, it managed to mess it up

can you compile kde 3.5 with qt4 USE flag?

Yes. Then I have two more HDDs on /home and /var/www

I use xfce4 anyway

they build the QT libraries (version 3 or 4 or both)

ah.. there's no solution to that?

sorry my mistake, there's no gtk use flag

|it's not as bad as some

wep, you can let everything that looks like a bounce through. but "looks like a bounce" is a very blurry metric.

well, I'll go ahead and throw those use flags in, and see if that doesn't get me wpa_gui

if only a bounce format was rigidly defined..

you only need one of them, I thinkl
*think

so, just before the point of a shutdown you can be sure that resolv.conf and, although you don't mention it, I assume you're referring to /etc/localtime or /etc/conf.d/clock contain the contents you expect? yet, when you reboot, the contents are the not the same?

so qt4 just to go with the newer version?
ok

i couldn't find a replacement for dreamweaver for linux till this day.. this is mainly the #1 reason preventing me switching our company machines all to secure linux web hosting =/

newer libraries not newer version

it would actually be interesting if there was a very specific format for spam, abuse, bounce, and all other official emails..
that way i could filter all incoming mail on postmaster@blah to only accept official stuff

glimmer or … what's the other one..

quanta ?

I'm not sure which time file is wrong, I just know when I boot back up the time is off by 5 hours. (thus I assume /etc/localtime) but yes, that is the case.

the thing is no spammer would use the official format because everyone would filter it…

now to wait an eternity for mplayer to finish emerging so I can newuse. Thanks for the help friendly12345

The domain line of resolv.conf will remain the smae, but all nameserver lines get dropped.

doesn't look like glimmer is a designing app

this is actually my first time using gentoo as a desktop OS. Done a few Xless server setups but never a laptop

ok. considering the nameservers problem first, please pastebin /etc/conf.d/net

gentoo's the best hosting on laptops

I *really* like the feel of xfce4. Nice and no-nonsense

DOH.. you're right.. bluefish?? i know it's not quite dreamweaverish, but i like it.

tried it.. none of them have the 'design' part to show you a design view of what you have, such as what nvu kind of shows.

tried emailing the maintainer?

of nvu? no, but will i really reach anywhere with that ?

http://fis.homelinux.net:8080/net

if you can reach the head of the nvu dev team, you could get a "is it dead?" answer

fair enough
will do

Uh oh. I need a new HDD for this box. I just ran out of space in /home.

well, throw away all those warez and you'll be fine with your HDD for another twenty years

rm -rf / — 100% compression
make sure to empty the cache in the home folder, especially if you're a kde user
like the .thumbnails folder

it's probably because you are setting a dns realted option in conf.d/net, that gives it carte blanche to play with resolv.conf. you could actually set your nameservers in conf.d/net. or try removing the dns_domain_lo directive.

try out NVU

related*

I'll try that,. Any ideas on the time one?

that was the center of the topic

I'm not even a GUI user, much less KDE

firstly, what is your actual timezone?

sorry i was behind

GMT-5
errr.
US/East/Eastern if I recall correctly.

America/New_York

US/Eastern, now that I='ve loked.

tried quanta and or kompozer ?

Man, this lag is not helping my already poor typing skills.

it may be that your system clock is subject to drift. it would be interesting to note whether there is any significant margin between the output of date and the output of hwclock over time. if so, then you might want to set CLOCK_SYSTOHC="yes" in conf.d/clock
oops
^

yes, and they don't showy ou the design, like what dreamweaver has

uanta has more coding features than Nvu, yet also has a WYSIWIG and hybrid-WYSIWYG interface

really ?

Sounds doubtful. The clock remains correct until a reboot, and then jumps off by several hours.

i never seemed to find it

quanta does

Hi everyone, im trying to get gensplash working. And it does, except that i can't switch to verboose mode. I have made sure that CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y in my kernel… Can someone point out what could be the problem? thx in advance

hmm, i'll give it another try then

are you sure you are talking about the hardware clock?

hi experts

oh man, again
heh

The closest Linux equivalent to Dreamweaver that Ive found is Quanta Plus

are you sure you are talking about hwclock? have you run hwclock just before shutting down?

thanks dcoats, will give it another try. maybe i missed something last time

that will show the clock as maintained by the CMOS.

'I don't know which clock I'm talking about. I just notice that irssi's time is off, and I run the date command. THen I forget about it until the next time I have a power outage. ;-)

now, if _that_ turns out to be OK but jumps after a reboot then Linux is not to blame.
I think that's the first thing you should check.

I never even knew about that. That one is off by 4 hours.

aha

and 11 minutes, actually.

you will probably benefit from setting the aforementioned directive.
and you can fix it now by running hwclock –systohc
also consider using a NTP client

That is one of my next projects. I failed at it the last time I built this network.

I'm using openntpd. it has a few drawbacks compared to ntpd when used on Linux but, on the other hand, is incredibly easy to setup. my configuration file consists of two lines, "listen on 192.168.254.0/24" and "servers europe.pool.ntp.org".

Ok. I think I'll give rebooting a shot, and see if these adjustments hold.
My probelm was in trying to get my various boxen to synch to the firewall that was synching to an exterior ntp server.

what the package name of the konqueror integration package?

what happened to packages.gentoo.org ?

it went down.

any wine vst asio producer pro's here?

thanks

if I just wanted a network card to just listen..without an ip address host address. would I just set it to " null " ?

that seems kinda specialized — maybe ##networking can help

cool thanks!

yes #config_eth0="null" , its all described in /etc/conf.d/net.example

Problem solved on both counts. Thank you for the help.

jolly good.

hello

hi

jeez, qt4 is taking longer to compile than mplayer and all its deps did

knows someone how high the cpu usage goes with gbit traffic over network when doing nfs?
is it very cpu consuming?

shouldn't be high, disk I/O is cheap, network usually too … 10% on a modern machine I'd say

ok, because i've seen some TOA NAC (http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/Networking/GigE/ANA-7711C/) and i thought that the usage can't be so high on todays computers that such a card would make sense
s/TOA/TOE

single gbit shouldn't be a problem, but put 5 of those in a box and watch it burn ;-)

hmm

heh ok, but i think that then the bus would be the limiting factor?

what diff command should i use to make a patch suitable for putting in an ebuild?

possibly … and interrupts

yeah, that's exactly what this card does, it sucks in loads of traffic and generates much less interrupts than a normal nic, but the problem is that the last kernel supported was 2.4.18 so their driver is very old and i've reviewed their source and it would need lots of changes to make it work on linux 2.6

:-)
…. why proprietary software fails it

it's not proprietary, as i said, the source is available, but would need lots of changes

try out a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5701 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 15)

ok their asic and microcode is proprietary, but which current cpu/pci hardware is not

hmm, send one of those cards to the kernel dudes and wait a month ;-)

ok so apparently my portage was way out of sync and i chose some bad mirrors… now that I'm trying to update gnome i have a bunch of blocked package erorrs
any suggestions?

well, the source from adaptec is huge, it is two thirds hardware control and hardware dependent things and one third the tcp/ip stack from the kernel 2.4 days that is offloaded to the asic's cpu (it has 64mb ram onboard) and there are over 130 files, i don't think that this is so easily done in 1 month

pastebin the output of emerge -uDNpvt world

sec

I'm not completely serious, but I'd guess that integration into mainline kernel can't be that hard

http://pastebin.com/d40d51a29

I've installed ytalk, but it can't find a talk daemon. What else do I need to install?

a talk daemon

well, last year chelsio communications sent a huge patch for a generalized tcp/ip offloading framework to the lkml and it didn't got included into the kernel, so i think it would be hard to convince the kernel guys to include it

how do I disable mouse acceleration & set the sensitivity @ xorg.conf ?

ok, those are easy enough. Just unmerge them

chelsio builds 10gbit cards

Twinkletoes, http://gentoo-portage.com/s?search=talk

Yeah - I figured that… I don't kno what it's called though

unmerge the blocked packages?

no, unmerge the block*ing*

or the packages doing the blocking
right

Wow, more emerges less ignoring updates! just emerge -C control-center

Thanks

?

no worries, just unmerge those three

hmm sounds interesting, but does this thing offload some burden from the cpu or is it "just" a nic with a larger buffer?

since I only have a few GBit cards at work and none at home I never really looked at those

yeah me too

Hi! Somebody knows if exist any command to sync the tree of portage but show me the status?\

milk-it: what status?

how do I disable mouse acceleration & set the sensitivity @ xorg.conf ?

Hi, does someone now a regular expresion for grep, with which a can find all lines with 1, 2 or 3 spaces in it

Dominik[HTN]: this isn't the place for that question :|

milk-it: eix package has eix-sync that will give you a overview after the sync is done

Dominik[HTN]: there is a #regex

hmm interesting is that M$ seem to force network offloading to the network cards, perhaps because in the early days (2001-2003) they got ignored by companies like adaptec, the TOE NAC i was referring to has only linux drivers

fascinating

I have running Gentoo install on x86. Now I want to move to AMD64. Is it possible to keep my current system?

only if you stay 32bit

he wants to know how much longer syncing will take

why can't I merge xzgv btw :/?

DrEeevil, 0%…50%…100%

hi

milk-it: can't really predict that, but rsync does have some progress reporting

how can I part a file in 1.5 chunks -
and rejoin them on windows
just to transport a 2.7 gb file from my gentoo to a windows per sdcard which has 2 gig

any packing program like rar, zip or tar+bzip2 should handle that

lnxnt, as in linuxant?

Zeroth404:

as in linux-not!

helo

new kernel + change CHOST and CFLAGS will not help to migrate from working 32 bit to 64 bit?

my gentoo has been crashing for 2-3 days now

can anyone recommend an image viewer like xzgv? can't find that package

i suspect that its either ktorrent or azureus

|geoaxis|, you have bad hardware or hardware configuration

no, as in linux nt , "ente"

lnxnt, the company that abused the linux kernel? :-p
lol

don't get that :P

anyone, do linux modules ever get loaded automatically, as in when needed or at boot?
I'm real confused as to how all that works
I knmwo yu can modprobe

Zeroth404, the kernel can do some autoloading.. and the script /etc/modules.autoload.d picks up slack that udev misses

if you set yuor kernel to do automatic loading, yes

/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 sorry

grknight, I notice that some modules are put there automatically..but by what?

Zeroth404, deps of what your loading are always pulled in
Zeroth404, like your sound card as a module needs the alsa items or it wouldn't work

grimm26, how does the automatic loading work. when the service is requested and the kernel realizes it doesnt have it loaded and needs it?

Zeroth404, if it's a device, many times udev takes care of modules. it doesn't always though so the script mentioned above takes care of those cases

anyone here ever run amavisd-new?

yes

wep, amavisd-new++

i'm wondering what it would be like to simply run clam/spam separately.. amavisd-new is kind of bulky

how do I disable mouse acceleration and tweak the sensitivity while using fluxbox?

grknight, I'm just trying to figure out whether I should make all kinds of modules for thing I *might* need. I don't want things loaded that I don't use..

wep, if you're running postfix, i can recommened policyd-weight to cut down on a lot of bogus mail exchangers

hey, how come i have to enter the namesevers into resolv.conf each time i connect to a new network? shouldn't dhcp figure that stuff out?

what's that do?

wep, analyzes DNS records compared to where a mail is connecting from and what it says it is and a few other things
wep, if things go over a limit, it slams the door

ah.. i was thinking of doing tmda…

wep, this is much more effective today since 70% of spam uses something like "HELO friend"

looks kind of cool..
i never looked at the envelope info for my anti spam filter webmail host

hi, if an ebuild requires =media-libs/gstreamer-0.8 what will be pulled? gstreamer-0.8 (same slot) or directly gstreamer-0.10 (not the same slot) ? in other words, does dependencies handling take care of slotted packages in this case?

don't work… Example: I want to merge the latest version of python, but not equal to dev-lang/python-2.4.4-r4 because of GLSA.

is there a way to log that stuff so that i could see if policyd-weight would work for me?

hmm -mmmx does no work on amd64?
seems to be a filtered use flag on 64bi

wep, think so.. look at the docs

also.. if it's checking RBL/blacklists… isn't that already done by postfix w/out this module?

tmda you may use as last line of protection

wep, it's done more effectively from what i've seen since it's weighted against many things

for small servers it is very good

you don't recommend tmda unless spam is a really really huge problem?

how can I join files splittet with split?

cat

tmda itself will not process all spam

pinky, =dev-lang/python-2.4.4-r4 to package.mask

tmda seems like a large step..

on windows

it is not a new tool and not of common use

Doh! thx

without source IP check and other filters it will flood your queue

source ip checking is a part of tmda?

I mean dnsbl

is there a facility for emerging two things at once?

wep, policyd-weight is quite fast and leads to less checking by content scanners such as spamd/clamd/amavis/tmda which tie down a good mail system

tmda is like if you want to make deep vacuum you use 2 or pumps consequently

ganymede, you can do it, it's just not recommened because you could do extra work or merge 2 of the same package together

why can't I merge xzgv?

exyan, what's xzgv?

lightweight image viewer, know any alternatives?

What would explain why my gentoo computer uploads very slow over LAN? I have a bunch of media files on a mounted drive that I stream over my network, but gentoo uploads them very slow.

and less than 50% of responders do understand how to reply to tmda's requests

why would it flood the mail queue?

samba?

is there any "screen" master around here ?

DrEeevil, yes I have the share mounted through samba

exyan, it was removed from portage 2 weeks ago… ChangeLog doesn't say why

because tmda will try to send fake return addresses used by spammers

blame the server then ;-)

know any other image viewers?
light*

and some servers may deem that your are bounce-spam-relay

exyan, i'd stop using it too as it has a gaping security hole

it does, but now I need an publish your images online viewer lol
;p

hmm
do you think it's worth the time to install tmda?

can anyone help me with screen

is it hard to manage?

it frozed , again…
i cant quit it . my tty1 frozed with it as well and i cant reattach

sounds like your machine hangs

exyan, found this ebuild that you can stick in an overlay.. http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=97268&action=view

ITS THE

it worth to try it

EYE OF THE TIGER

keeb topic

np

well the machine is okay
and i can ssh into it

that is quite strange

its not the first time it happened !

how many accounts do you handle?

but I don't really want smthn like ACDSee, I want it uber light

only one

once i attached from tty1 from the machine and it frozed there too
and once in another situation too !

i don't see anything referring to the Eye of the Tiger

and my tty1 is dead with it as well … all info remains on it … and stuff like this ! grrrr

tmda also has a squirrelmail plugin…

for 1 account no need to setup mailserver

but the worst part is that i cant use screen -D -R to reattach to it !

where would i host my mail?

so what can i do ? kill screen and restart it ?
duhh

screen -x ?

keeb it just hangs and doesnt gives back info !

no ideas man, sry

with isp, or mailportals

is here … he is in the screen session

they all suck

exyan, try pqiv

besides a Domain hosting was only $5/yr

i'm having trouble connecting to packages.gentoo.org

it's down

hi, how can i tell if a binary is statically linked?

what is an easy way to get the last 5 chars of a string with bash?

what was the command to view what files are in use?

hi

ldd will show whats dynamically linked

klingon, lsof

sion_, thnx

i just run ldd on the binary?

klingon, its a seperate package tho

yes

thanks
really noobish question, but right after a make from source, where are the binaries usually?

Could someone help me? When I run update-modules force I get "* Warning: could not generate /etc/modprobe.conf!"

in a subdir of the source
often build/ or similar

or have a look in the Makefile

mk will do
any way to search a directory structure to list all binaries?

I've got 'nvidia mcp51 hd audio' but alsaconf says 'no supported pnp or pci card found.' Oo

anyone?

running as root?

yeah

use the in-kernel intel hda

you have setup your audio using the gentoo alsa guide?
intel8×0
snd_hda_intel

Intel HD Audio ?

exyan, that's the one

m, will my mic work too? since I've read there were issues with the built in driver

what nic?

mic

oh
no idea
should

gotta try

yeah, I run it as root

I thought the mcp51 was hda already … but if it's ac97 all the better

it's hda

Somebody knows if exist any way of place relief in GroupBox?

so try the "intel" driver, even if the name sounds wrong

ops

just makin sure. i spent three hours troubleshooting something tonight because it wasn't fully as root. i'm not sure what else could be the cause of your problem. good luck though

sorry
this question is to #qt

yay or nay?

hahaha, thanks

kagemaru, http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4002403.html#4002403

Is there some way to make sure GLSA data is current? Perhaps a way to clear it out and load it again?

emerge –sync ?

needs more than that I fear…

Cim happy that i think afteer 1 day of trying to fix my installation im finally getting to it =D

thanks, I'll check it out

pinky, sync then `glsa-check -l affected` to see if things are affecting you.. fix them and then `glsa-check -f new` to keep the list short

kagemaru, its a 'fix'

gj soulride1, now enable encryption on your root partition

pinky, after that… `glsa-check -l new` will just show new things in a very short list

I still get the same error… but it does create a modprobe.conf file

Is it possible to use rsync if the remote server allows scp and sftp access, but not access to ssh?

does anyone know how to change the default application a program gets opened with in Gnome?

kagemaru, there may be other forum hits with better fixes, I did not check all 101 hits ;-)

eh… what did you search for? I only got 1 hit on google

kagemaru, I searched within the forums.. another possible is: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-425693.html

list show something that conflicts with the gentoo website. The first time i ran glsa-check it showed a lot of things… I found my world file was inaccurate. I backed it up and regenerated it, then updated it all… Everything went away for GLSA except for 3 python things. I versions of python it wanted to update to conflicted tho, so I went to the gentoo website to look at the particular GLSA's. The site ( http://www.gentoo.org
/security/en/glsa/glsa-200610-07.xml )says that =2.4.3-r4 are ok, but I'm at 2.4.4-r4 and it wants to GLSA wants to downgrade me.
http://www.gentoo.org/security/en/glsa/glsa-200610-07.xml

kagemaru, good luck with it, long read the last one, I gotta go shop..

I am using xfce4, if I emerge openoffice will gnome also be installed? Seems like it has dependencies to gnome-base; I am looking for a lite openoffice and I definitively do not want to install gnome

have a look at your useflags …

abiword might be something to look into

http://rafb.net/p/hvIGqb82.html I do have "-gnome" there

pinky, what does `glsa-check -l 200610-07` say?

can I make kwallet remember my username when logging into windows hosts?

buffer overflow, the same as the site http://www.gentoo.org/security/en/glsa/glsa-200610-07.xml

will it handle M$ formats? I need to convert them

strange then …

indeed! I can't think that openoffice needs gnome..

yes, abiword handles .doc at the very least, certainly up to office 2k3 format anyway

http://rafb.net/p/o4M38g75.html

beyond that I'm not sure, but it works for me

great. I'll get it then

oops, sorry… it says to downgrade, that i am at 2.4.4-r4 atm and need to be at 2.4.3-r4

deim0s_free, btw.. your first 4 lines of USE are incorrect.. those are LINGUAS

I had originally put them into LINGUAS..then for some weird reason I moved them there - can't remember why. I will fix that, thanks

hang on, deim0s_free, lemme check something

ok - thanks

I'm on a switchbox with that system can't cut and paste :P

well..abiword wants gnome-base too. I think I have misconfigured USE flags for Xorg or xfce4 http://rafb.net/p/xhmeLm74.html

mzbot, teach pinky paste

Use http://rafb.net/paste or emerge wgetpaste. Pasting in #gentoo itself clutters the chat and will get you kicked by Naamah. Use the aforementioned site and hand us the URL so we can check it out.

deim0s_free, it

"it" in LINGUAS?
Italian localization

deim0s_free, it's the eds use flag that's pulling gnome-base (and possibly gstreamer)

it's probably the eds USE flag that's causing the gnome dependencies

umh..interesting

not openoffice itself

I'll have to tune that

no gui on that system. I just transfer by hand, carefully. What I wrote was accurate.

what USE flag(s) are you referring to?

pinky, wgetpaste is a console utility to paste output

[ebuild N ] app-office/openoffice-2.2.1 USE="cairo cups dbus eds —–
eds is part of gnome, and it's eds that's pulling it in

deim0s_free, if you want to be gnome free, -eds and -gstreamer in make.conf

oh..! so it is not an USE flag of mine, it is a default use flag I will add "-eds" What's eds?

eds = evolution-data-server

ah ok
but is it normal that it is by default emerge'd ?

deim0s_free, if you're using desktop profile, yes

yes I am
should I switch to another profile? (I am using xfce4 as DE)
I think no

deim0s_free, you might also want to -esd (which is a sound daemon)

Cool, but i don't irc there and my vnc broke somehow… only switchbox… too much hassle to paste into something on that system. I'll look into that tho for next time.

I cannot put the "-xx" values in LINGUAS because emerge complains that LINGUAS is non-incremental. That's why I had put them in USE

deim0s_free, all linguas are off by default

ok I have modified the USE flags, now it's getting fetched - thanks!

deim0s_free, you specify one or 2 and all the others are off

good. So I must have taken example from a bad make.conf to put those stupid -xx in the USE variable

deim0s_free, because if you equery a build that uses LINGUAS.. you'll see that it's slightly masked as to what you see and it uses

truly true

I recompiled my kernel, but alsaconf still says the same, no supported pci card found Oo

exyan, built in or as a module?

built-in

exit

exyan, does alsamixer show your card?

but another funny thing, I just started alsamixer and it's got stuff like "Card: HDA NVidia ; Chip: Conexant CX20549 ; Item Master [Off]"
etc
imo that means it's actually working lol

exyan, alsaconf works best with modules

what's the package for spreadsheets?

using genkernel-3.4.6 busybox doesn't compile reporting /var/tmp/genkernel/1096.3088.14597.3688/busybox-1.1.3+gentoo/libbb/procps.c:15:22:
asm/page.h: No such file or directory

mrfree, see /topic

how do I get Master to [on] ?

grknight, oops ok sorry

Kagemaru, don't run irc clients as root

Yep.

I know, it's the live cd though

irc as root = impending disaster.

Kagemaru, what does that matter?

grknight, I'm searching for a bug in 3.4.8 and I want to try using 3.4.6

not much to destroy at the moment
xD

Kagemaru, still anything you mount could be potentially accessed… as well as the network you're on.
Kagemaru, just fyi.

mkey, brb then

exyan, i don't know what you're looking at.. i've always done sound as a module to better debug it. you can try to tab around i think

ehm..sorry to break again, but any idea why also gnumeric needs gnome-base? I have already modified my make.conf and updated the environment

there

deim0s_free, i think it pulls in a lot of gnome things.. so one can be required to have gnome-base

AFAIK gnumeric is a part of the gnome office

oh well, that explains a lot of things
probably true. It needs libgnomeprintui for exmple
(pretty OT) are you aka Grey Knight?

deim0s_free, http://gentoo-portage.com/AJAX/Ebuild/27581/View
lots of gnome things in there

Hah! Sorry, I'm dense… thanks for your patience. http://rafb.net/p/5tixE632.html

I was actually giving a look at http://gentoo-portage.com/app-office/

emerge openoffice or emerge openoffice-bin if you don't want to wait a "bit"

I have an alias problem with nvidia. The "old driver support" (which I don't need as far as I know) and the "nvidia driver support" use the same alias in modprobe.conf, which farks up update-modules… any ideas how to fix it?

oh, I won't miss the compile-time! I like the matrix-style scrolling

on my p4 3ghz 1gb ram and sata hdd it took "only" 6h30min

I have 1.6 Ghz and half your ram…I better think that I do not need openoffice
what's comparable to gnumeric for spreadsheets?

Hi, simple question here - how can I give a user access to the wireless device so that I can change wireless networks and such as a user and not root?

deim0s_free, there is a binary openoffice package too.

I checked the wiki and couldn't find my answer

yes but it's anyway a big package…

pinky, not sure then… it shouldn't do that

deim0s_free, true.

anyway I think I'll end up installing it, it's a very complete and good suite

i have a file with a list of things to emerge, how do i make a script to emerge them one at a time?

there is also kspread from KOffice project but for sure it will need some KDE dependencies. just go for openoffice-bin

yeah - probably the best deal
thanks all

I masked out my current version and emerge will build 2.4.4 (no r4). Prolly won't do anything, but I'll try. Thx for your help!

If only you could install openoffice-bin and then tell emerge to make a custom openoffice-bin in the background
But ooo-bin blocks ooo so you can't work while it makes it

where can I put 'xset m 0 0' to get it at startup?

hey guys, I'm trying to use Esetroot but it keeps saying the image file couldn't be loaded

WM/DE?

err?

fluxbox

I can't give you advice unless I know what your running…

flux

hey all. im reading the wiki page about the amd64-
amd32 chrootint
*chrooting

I don't know flux. :p

I have no diskspace left

well there's gotta be something like ~/.xinit or smthn
I don't remember it

can I tell split to split one part of the file to sdcard and the rest to disk?

you guys think that is going to solve my problem of the 32bit odbc driver on the 64bit system

It's not universial
Some DE's use some files, other DE's other files

how do i list all packages available in a category ?

judging by the name it should execute commands when X starts up

soulrider, category as in ?

Why don't you find out for yourself, by tracing how X is loaded, by reading the script files?

like for examle media-libs or games

soulrider, ls /usr/portage/media-libs/ ?

Thats how I learned the startup files I know about, that gdm sessions can use

oh, thanks

soulrider, just browse the tree or try http://packages.gentoo.org

like do i need to install the odbc driver, AND apache2 and php in the 32-bit enviornment?

It's all scripts, so it's all human readable, instead of being hidden in some binary, but even binaries will have documentation

soulrider, for searching eix is nice too

does anyone know how to give a user access to the wireless card so that he can connect to wireless networks and such without logging in as root?

got no idea where the scripts are etc

is there a group I can add the user to?

What command do you use to start X?

startx? though I got xdm setup, starts gdm, then goes fluxbox

im just looking for some games that dont need xorg

Is http://packages.gentoo.org down for anyone else?

less $(which startx)

down for me

There the first piece of the puzzle is decoding what startx does
for gdm check /etc/X11/gdm and /etc/X11/sessions

~/.xinitrc

Something man gdm will tell you

hey guys, what use flags should I be using with Esetroot?

btw is there a way to see what resolution & refresh rate am I running ?
since I'm on a laptop and no monitor options wanna see if I get my max refresh rate

packages.gentoo.org is going through extended maintenance, no ETA on when it's up I think

I ran into major problems while emerging gnome. I changed my CHOST from CHOST="i486-pc-linux-gnu to CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu. All was fine during the base installation, but errors while emerging gnome. Any ideas why?

You might be able to read it out of the log file in /var/log
Did you follow the howto on changing CHOST?

Systemax, you dont just change your CHOST and IF you do, you need to follow the guide

url plz

No, I didn't. I've been doing the gentoo installation from http://gentoo-install.com/install

only found my resolution there (which I kinda knew ^^)

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/list.xml and go search for chost

could osmeone help when i go to load my rt61 wirless module it loads fine but when i do iwconfig ra0 essid namehere it caused my system to lock up,"soft lockup" is what it says

What use flags should I be using on Esetroot?

someone*

I only know the gnome/kde screen setup programs, they tell you the refresh
I do beleive there is others though, so keep looking

or more specifically, why doesn't feh or Esetroot work for me?

tnx

su

can someone help me please?

argh, I've been looking around on the wiki for some time but cannot find out how to do it, or if it is possible. How can I give access to my wireless card to a user so that I don't have to login as root to change wireless networks or do other wireless-related things?

I can't figure out why feh and Esetroot can't load a wallpaper

Spamming the same question every 30 seconds is just getting people annoyed
Go use the mailing list if no one can help you here

very yup

ok, sorry

or check forums

tastum, what do you mean give access to your wireless card?

is the only auth log for gentoo /var/log/auth.log ?

That depends on your syslog configuraiton

well, much like users added to the audio group can use the soundcard to play music, I want the user to be able to use wpa_supplicant to change wireless networks and bring the card up and down

Where can I findout where my auths are logged to?

sorry if I wasn't clear before, I'm at work and very distracted, which is also why I ended up repeating myself too often

What syslogger do you have installed?

you can give access via sudo to specific commands/commandlines.

Syslog-ng

/etc/syslog-ng/* has it's configuration

it only mentions /var/log/messages
does that mean even auth logs go into messages?

I'm not sure

tastum, hrmm. i'm guessing you may be able to just set the permissions to the wpa_* scripts to include the group the user is in

I never used the old syslog-ng, but switched to the new one with custom made configuration

sontek, it defaults to /var/log/messages i believe.. you can split it out any way you want in the config

yeah, i'm only seeing failures though, no successes

You setup the amount loged with the actual program
Syslog just receives the log messages and stores it
/etc/login.defs

what would explain why transfers using cifs are so slow?

what's server, what's client?

I have 2 computers i stream media from, both on same 100mbit switch, and 1 of them i can max out download, but other is slow.

both same OS ?

hi Miravlix

DrEeevil, yes

now that is fascinating :-)

Greetings Mahasamatman

klingon, same network card too?

I'll try and figure that out then, thanks for the assistance

DrEeevil, client is gentoo connected via wireless.. however wireless is not the problem. i also have a fedora computer i stream media from and the wireless laptop can max out its download when streaming from that computer

The official #samba channel is here on freenode, I beleive those guys is quite good at samba

are custom useflags still added to package.use?
well not custom, but individual use flags

yes

Global flags to make.conf and local to package.use

sounds good
and package.use is still in etc/portage/?

Miravlix I forgot to write the steps you used to repair your system that had mixed up USE flags. Could you recall them for me? (I am the one that cant get mesa to emerge and am behind on world as a result)

X is evil because it's also effect a lot of stuff with it's use flag.

anyone have any idea how long the online package database will be down?

Unable to load image file…" trying to set a jpg

swanfl, there are alternatives

swanfl, you can use sources.gentoo.org or the unofficial gentoo-portage.com

I had to wipe world and remove X use flags (maybe others too)

there are?

swanfl, try http://www.gentoo-portage.com/

I guess I just need to format and start over

hmm

emerge –depclean at that point should fail, but it will tell you what it fails on and you can emerge -C to slowly get sanity back

oh? the portage database is down?

while updating gnome i got x11-misc/xkeyboard-config failed

it'll be down until the unexpected maintenance is over :-)

Talcite, not portage itself.. just a website that shows what's in it

very profound, DrEeevil

I see.. so does emerge –sync still work?

Talcite, yes

ahh good

Miravlix so "emerge -e world" "emerge –depclean" then "emerge -C"

You lost the password for the machine and have to brute force attack it?
emerge -e system

Talcite, plus.. it's good to be in the round-robin DNS of SYNC mirrors per area.. example "SYNC=rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

We just need to get the system to not depend on X
Wait it wont do much with a emerge -e system either, as long as X is on the system configure will find and use it

Miravlix ok,

Just go to emerge –depclean –ask after cleaning world
Might want to keep a backup of it. /var/lib/portage/world

how do I "clean world"?

what do you mean by clean ?

exactly

if you mean depclean, that is for world. emerge –depclean

more a "community administration" type of deal ;-)

rm it
lalalala I dont want to know, it takes all the fun out of guessing

Miravlix depclean proceding

ok so i'm trying to update gnome and failing miserably

?image/jpeg?" message in gnome, which package should I recompile with the jpeg USE flag? Or what can I do?

should gnome not be running when you're trying to update it?

Miravlix found nothing to do

it's better to have jpeg as a global use flag. put it in /etc/make.conf

now I know, but I don't want to recompile the complete gnome

then emerge -uavDN world to update your system

Miravlix says it canr resolve dependencies due to xinetd not being installed (needed by rsync)

"LDFLAGS apart from -Wl,O1 are not supported - this includes –as-needed" — is this correct?

hey, I just want to throw a thanks to the person who helped me out with wireless access for a user. Their suggestion helped me find the answer - you can set a group in wpa_supplicant.conf that can use the wireless card's control interface. It helped a lot

how did you do that? would you mind adding it to the wiki?

I wouldn't mind adding it to the wiki at all. Let me go do that

ty

in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf I set ctrl_interface_group=100 (the group for my user)

cool

then wpa_gui started working as soon as I restarted wpa_supplicant

I'm not sure it can be stated so precisely. Some say, no LDFLAGS at all are supported. But many bugs for –as-needed are accepted.

so –as-needed shouldn't flag a warning then? cool

when trying to set the wallpaper on fluxbox via fbsetbg, I just get Unable to load image file, any suggjestions?

I don't think that follows from what I said.

hehe i dunno :/

Hey guys, the Portage guide says you can have multiple versions of a package on a system, but it doesn't say how. I need qt3 on my system, how do I manage that?

do you have support for the image format you try to load?

slots
and set qt3 qt4 use flags

I guess I do ;p

igli, they are set, they're depreciated so it won't install qt3

is it only when you try to set the background when it fails, you can watch the picture with any image viewer like feh, mirage or such?

more like opera don't got an image viewer yet tbh, building my sys

you have any tool installed that can set the background then?

oh dunno, i'd ask in #gentoo-desktop if i were you

as I said I'm using fbsetbg

fbsetbg itself cant set the background. it needs extra tools. emerge feh and try again. dont forget to set jpeg and png in use flags in /etc/make.conf

mkay

guys I'm back today I bring you my broke net.eth0 can we gewt it fixed today hopefully what do you say ?

emerge -pv =x11-libs/qt-3.3.8-r3, what does the bottom line say, Total…. 1 package and.. ?

1 reinstall.
Which doesn't sound good to me at all.

Kuprin, ok, and you sure you do not have it ?
Kuprin, got eix ?

I sure need a guru to get me out of this mess!

Kuprin, eix will show both versions if installed

The net.eth0 seems to broke somewhere in the area of dhcp because it doesn't come up either.

getting eix right now. New system, haven't emerged it yet.

Kuprin, fair enough, again, I am no expert on using slotted packages.. but if that says reinstall… I assume you got 3, but eix will tell

right now qt4 is installed.

other than that gentoo really is a good system just don't know to find the problem with net.et0 even if that isa th reason fore it going down the way it has.

ok, eix says qt3 IS installed

does gentoo upgrade cleanly from 2006 to 2007?

Mahasamatman, gentoo doesn't "upgrade" in the traditional sense

Kuprin, good

ext3 or reiserfs? opinion?
for the most part yes

victori, depends on the purpose

ironfoot491, what interfaces do you see in `ifconfig -a`?

add a _ there

workstation/eclipse java background compiles

mzbot, teach Mahasamatman upgrade

gcc upgrade: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml ( http://xrl.us/rhxw )

fail

victori_, didnt you ask before ?

stability and longevity

victori_, I remember that question

I understand grknight, I am trying to figure out why/when my system broke ,

I still have not decided

Mahasamatman, the only difference for a working 2006 and 2007 is the profile and a `emerge -avuDN world`

victori_, I still would go ext3 (the slower option over reiserfs 3)

sion_, looks like the damn thing won't compile anyway because it's having issues differentiating between qmake for qt3 and qt4

my sys hasnt been able to do a world since

Kuprin, yikes.. qmake.. I got no idea on that one..
Kuprin, what are you compiling ?

Mahasamatman, is your world file corrupt at all?

what's the deal with laptop displays and Xorg? my display makes a high pitched ringing noise (subtle, fades away after a bit *i think), and i want to make sure i'm not damaging it

mosno my guess the deal is you did a bad config

sion_, qtvba, because the package is masked for amd64, I want to see if I can bash it into compiling from source.

sion_, it's basically the Xorg -configure, then changed driver from vesa to nvidia

mosno, so.. check your tech manual on refreshes and all.. you are playing with fire if it makes a noise

sion_, is there some way to determine/probe-for the correct settings to add to xorg.conf if any?
ok thanks,
i'm going to get out of X now, ttys

Mahasamatman, or are things missing from /var/db/pkg/* ?

if i have a package that exists only in rpm what is better to do?
rpm2tgz?

Kuprin, ah ok.. seems a game ? tried to unmask it ?

tr3, or write an ebuild for it

grknight for the moment it doesnt exist ( it keeps failing mesa) I have been helped by people here over the past few months and all attempts lead to the exhaustion of those valiantly trying to solve the issue)

from what?

world file doesnt exist

sion_, masked by missing keyword, it won't unmask.

I cp'd it and rm'd orig

tr3, anything.. just `import rpm` to have it unpack… you can find help in #gentoo-dev-help in writing one

sion_, and yeah, it's a frontend for visualboyadvance, because vbaexpress is no longer good on Gentoo because you can't get the damn FLU lib sources

You still trying to cleanup or did you change plan?

Kuprin, how you unmasked ?

thanks

Miravlix says it canr resolve dependencies due to xinetd not being installed (needed by rsync)

sion_, I didn't, because it's "masked by missing keyword", according to our good friend the manual, you can't unmask that type of mask.

Kuprin, ah ok.. I never tried.. but… but.. there is an alternative

Oh?

Kuprin, make a 32bit chroot and compile the 32bit one ?

Miravlix when I got no followup from my telling you that I figured another nice guy had been beaten

well emerge even
Kuprin, * games-emulation/qtvba - Available versions: 0.2, looks table to me on 32bit

Naah, you just don't pay me enough to take up all my time. :p

Comments

Draconx ok look let me start again i used twinview works fine if i setup xinerama it does not work unless i add
