well i got three new 250G sata2's. was gonna dd the partition tables from one to the other two, to make them identical for raid5
well, i'm gonna work on my xorg.conf file for a bit while this emerge goes through it's 200 packages…
sinner ok great didnt know that in the 5 yrs runnin gentoo
oh man, that's not even hard to do
assumed that the old 250G sata drive was sda, cuz it was in the first sata port
i listen to races online and yer a great help in my efforts
i know, right?
heh, brutal
media-tv/ivtv-0.10.3 failed.
so yeah, copied sdb to sdc, then i was gonna do sdd. i checked fdisk -l…oh **** i said! stop it now! sdc was the old one
incorrect kernel configuration
it can happen to anyone …
ivtv is a driver for video capture cards…hmmm, is there an ivtv USE flag somewhere in a dependency or something?
i will look but there shouldnt be cause i dont have a card to wanna enable support for
Can I switch to 2007.0, I heard that it doesn't support my i586-pc-linux-gnu CHOST
i'm stumped… i HAVE a hauppage tv card, so that message probably flew right by my install without error.
AntiLiberal, you heard wrong.
ok good thanks
but I really dont see why mplayerplug-in would be looking for the ivtv driver. MAYBE you have a typo in /etc/portage/package.use ?
yeah i had a tv card at one time huappuage and never had that prob either til this laptop now i get it cause i dont had a tvcard
i dont either
im stumped
i checked my use flags and ivtv isnt in there
maybe the use flag is dvb or somethnig
is there an xvid plugin for gstreamer?
edwindoebler, yes.
what is the emerge for kde sound icon?
what is it part of?
gst-plugins-xvideo?
you could just emerge the kde media metapackage or whetever it is, it probably comes with that
edwindoebler, for playback of xvid-encoded videos, gst-plugins-ffmpeg.
you would get the media players along with the sound icon
sweet… thanks
bbs
i keep getting warning about clock skew…how can i resolve that? i'm using ntp-client to sync my clocks
adeel_n, hwclock –systohc to set it right over a reboot
you could have built the package in the future, then it's compalining because the clock is at the correct time now
AntiLiberal, alright cool…i've set that option in /etc/conf.d/clock as well
adeel_n, if you built a package in the future, then you can make clean
i am NOT used to how long it takes to emerge stuff
you will get used to it
gettinthere, you'll get used to it.
you will even like it
God made the light and the darkness, and separated the two. The night is for emerge and the day is for using your system
the choir's singing
well, i did get used to all the bloody passwords linux requires…after about a year
all the what passwords?
hey, its better than the blank administrator account in windows xp home!
and yeah.. i only have two
yeah, but it takes getting used to…my son is such a linux-resister…one reason is the passwords
well, you don't *have* to have a password…
lol…so far i've done about 27 of the 214 kde requires
after more than 30 minutes
well you're installing kde of all things, of course you'll be waiting.
and one total system freeze
—control freak
what is /usr/share/apr-0/ for and in what possible ways can it get messed up?
gettinthere, if you're a control freak, perhaps you'd prefer FVWM.
FVWM?
/usr/share/apr-0/build/libtool is looking for i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc that doesn't exist
it only takes at most a few minutes to emerge, and is configurable out the wazoo.
Is soon as you get a computer that is fast enough to run ked, BOOM, they come out with a new version and you're back where you were
what in the world is FVWM?
FV Window Manager
gettinthere, it is a window manager and then some.
oic…well, there's so much learning involved in gentoo, that's enough for me now…i'm used to kde and prefer it to gnome
is there any way to make mplayer keep the aspect ratio when resizing? its really annoying having it get squished
icebreeze, that should be default behaviour.
try -aspect 0
really? i was watching a video in firefox and resized the window and everything changed
is there a libcurl package in portage? I can't find it
icebreeze, "in firefox"?
only bindings for various languages
using the mplayerplug-in
; is
icebreeze, ah, mplayerplug-in is a horrible hack.
is there any other better plugin for firefox that will play videos?
desp, net-misc/curl
icebreeze, download the video, then play it with a real player.
desp use equry to see what package the file belongs to
that's the client
equery f /path/to/file
aw… but i 3 click and play stuff.
draconx ~/.mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf lets you configure it as with any mplayer
I don't have the files yet; I want to install libcurl
desp, it is both libcurl and the curl program.
ohh. thanks.
desp, then emerge -s libcurl # search for it
so is there any way to force correct ratio resizing it it?
ofc
thanks
man mplayer
TuxProbe, that doesn't change the fact that mplayerplug-in is a horrible hack.
well from what i've seen i didn't see that yet. i know what man pages are
is net supposed to be a module?
sorry…dumb question methinks
hi. i'm configuring vmware, but if i enable networking the vmware services doesn't go up…
i'm using /opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware-config.pl to do the configuration
i wouldn't ask a question before looking myself so telling me to really do man like i'm some fresh person to linux/gentoo is kind of an insult
well it depends on which -vo you're using i guess
i guess you're looking for either -aspect or -movieaspect
what's USE="mudflap" on gcc ?
*monitoraspect
now gcc has a USE flag "d"
d?
i'm using xv
icebreeze well it was not meant as an insult - there's like 7777 lines in that manpage, just /aspect
yah i know but its not like i haven't looked. i could have either missed it. I've already been looking a it
how do I find the GID for a group?
grep groupname /etc/group
equery uses gcc to see what each use flag for it does, and the d flag has been around for sometime iirc, at least for me, it enables support for the language d, never heard of it and my gcc wont compile with it enabled
Draconx, thanks
thanks for the help. i'm tired so i may have been a bit jumpy
let us know what worked for ya
pref-aspect=1 is what i needed
but when it resizes it keeps like a ghost of what was there in the black spot when i go from larger to smaller
thaats prolly what dragonx meant by being a hack hehe..
and that only works for the x11 video. not xv
is xv much better?
icebreeze gl is best, i actyually dont know the difference of xv and x11
icebreeze, it uses about 1/1000th of the cpu power on any video card made in the last 10 years.
but x11 gives a poor fps in a maximized window..
iirc, x11 doesn't support dynamic sizing
well gl doesn't work for me unfortunately for some reason
AaronPPC, it does.
mplayer has a very powerful software scaler.
i guess idrc
when i run it under that its all distored and lags the computer. i
icebreeze with which driver?
-vo gl vs -vo xv will depend on your video card, mostly.
[ebuild N ] dev-lang/hugs98-2005.3-r2 USE="-X -openal (-opengl)" 4,106 kB [0
why is the opengl flag in parens?
nvidia
desp, means you can't set it on your arch
ah
this makes me sad
how do I use eapify in order to add ebuilds unavailable in the prefix?
icebreeze dont know much of nvidia, but if you're having some sort of accel group like pbuffer or fbv running your X, its most likely that it wont work in -vo gl
for example, I want media-gfx/pngcrush
I think I'm going to have to use genkernel to get hardware raid going with dmraid, but I'd like to be able to tweak my kernel after genkernel makes it.
sometimes the feature is made standard and the use flag is dropped–like with glibc and the nptl flags
then you'll see the flag in ()
icebreeze you remembered to eselect opengl set nvidia, and is your renderer nvidia when running glxinfo |grep render
though i've done that but i'll double check
add –menuconfig to genkernel
ebrake, what about kernel upgrades?
what about them?
brb
ebrake, I'd like to be able to do things like make oldconfig
This may be slightly offtopic, but is there a method to instruct tar to "pretend" to tar up some files into an archive so that I can know the size that the archive will be?
ebrake, basically I'm asking if once genkernel makes a kernel, can I use it and tweak it like any other kernel?
how do i add a user with emerge permissions? or can only root use portage?
genkernel lets you pick a specific config file
ah well you know what i did manage not to do eselect.
ebrake, so long as I can use menuconfig and not have genkernel mess it up I'm happy.
ebrake, I just want the initrd because dmraid needs it for some reason
icebreeze hehe nice then it'll probably do the trick
howeve the aspect is back to now staying the same! lol
add the user to the portage group
to actually install you still need to be root or run it with sudo.
anyone here using ck-sources?
icebreeze well as said, it depends on the -vo.. maybe noautoaspect will work, or some of the more general options
icebreeze they're all like.. aliases, doing the same thing in various ways if you know what i mean
i wish there was a setting like "always keep file aspect ratio"
icebreeze, well, when invoked normally, that is what mplayer does.
bbl
icebreeze, all these problems stem from the fact that mplayerplug-in works by simply invoking mplayer with the -wid option.
all - i'm trying to create an iso, and keep getting this error. genisoimage: No such file or directory. Invalid node - ''
anyone have an idea on what's going on?
How do I mount my USB storage device w/ the correct filesystem?
In my fstab I have /dev/sda1 listed as vfat.
hey, can anyone recommend a C++ editor/compiler GUI for linux much like visual basic studio for windows?
but when I mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb, it doesn't display the filenames properly.
I had it working once but it off the livecd and I don't know what I did different.
Bit_Kid, you probably need to play with the encoding options.
I had it mounted once and it showed the windows long filenames properly.
Are the encoding options something in fstab?
well i'm trying to play the stream in normal mplayer and its just freezing :-/
icebreeze, link?
i sent it to you via pm
icebreeze, you'll need to be registered with nickserv to send PMs.
1 sec
have anyone successfully installed vmware-server?
identified
anyone have a moment to help me out with a mkisofs error?
did you get it?
hello guys
I tried mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb and it shows the filenames properly.
Do I always have to specify vfat from the command line?
Or is there something I can change so it just does it.
Bit_Kid, try just mount /mnt/usb
Anjuta or Eclipse are similar I believe…
i have problem with grub , any one here can help me ?
Thx, that works.
*anyonehere
*anyone here
How do I make it automount @ boot.
thanks!
What is the file that shows what loads on boot?
anjuta is an IDE for GNOME and eclipse is for Java-sdk, but thanks anyway
Bit_Kid, /etc/fstab
Is there anything i should be aware of before changing to zsh, i had a quick stint of ubuntu reenly and was impressed with the shell and nostly, its tab completion, and the more i read on zsh the better it seems, will it cause any problems?
what file loads the modules and stuff?
Bit_Kid /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
thx
forgot about that
you can switch back at will.
Can anyone help me with a mkisofs error I'm getting. It's: genisoimage: No such file or directory. Invalid node - ''.
If I need to use the nvidia-legacy-drivers, and I am about to emerge xorg-x11, should i set my make.conf VIDEO_DRIVERS="" to something other than "nvidia"?
I am following the X Server HOWTO
Is there a good reason not to use reiserfs in /var/ ?
no better reason than not using it anywhere else
I know for a fact that Anjuta does C++ editing and compiling
timmy_boy, you can get the same performance with ext3 + journaling
nothing like updating world to completely hose your computer
timmy_boy, theres a good reason to not use reiserfs anywhere…
i seem to be having a random problem with portage….whenever i try to compile hosting an ebuild, it fails with this error message: /usr/lib/portage/bin/ebuild.sh: line 751: cd: /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/automake-wrapper-3-r1/work: No such file or directory
yes but it is for GNOME i dont use/like GNOME thus, i wont use that, haha, i found that kdevelop works fine for me, i just didnt have it installed
ah i see, well you never said anything about KDE
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdesu-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-3.5.7-r1)
cesco, don't mix the split and monolithic kde packages.
mzbot, gentoo cesco kde split ebuilds
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-split-ebuilds.xml
guys, rtl8187 ebuild is tottaly buggy, sunrise ebuild cant find the tarball (offline server). How could I procceed to make my wireless card rtl8187 work in Gentoo?
yeah its all good, i figured that it would be Desktop Enviroment independant, but if it works it works
how can I easily check out ebuild packages by hand? I need to eapify them for my gentoo-prefix
nevermind on my mkisofs question, i'll just do it in windows. thanks.
ok thanks everyone
greetings, I used a distro that has gone outdated (VLOS) I want to remove the overlay so I can stick to portage rules for vanilla gentoo, what folder should I look for, it didn't use layman to sync, but gensync
kamihacker, check /etc/make.conf for PORTDIR_OVERLAY. Just comment that line out
uhm
I am having trouble getting cacti up. Can someone help please? I have installed it and follwed the configs to configure the databse information and now when I visit the site that should display login, I get Warning: mysql_pconnect() [function.mysql-pconnect]: Access denied for user 'cactiuser'@'localhost' (using password: YES) in /usr/share/php/adodb/drivers/adodb-mysql.inc.php on line 376. Where do I need to look for this problem?
twistx, thx a lot, I've been postponing my update for weeks
n3kl, it'd be useful if you pastebin the content of that line, the line above and the line below
I have even gone as far as a fine /usr/share -type f -exec grep -Hin cactiuser {} \; to see if I can find where this file is pulling the information it is using to connect to the database, but the only place that looks like it is set, is correct
it is a repetition of every connect instance, about thirty times
n30, have you tried connecting using that mysql user to mysql from command line?
yes
and it works
the thing is, the database name is set to another box on the network, not localhost.
yes it works
so I set up a local mysql hosting database and set the same information and see if that worked and it has yet to work
n3kl, if you are using mysql5, are you sure php is compiled against mysql5 libraries?
I just don'w know where it is gettin ght values
n3kl, uhm wait
does that remote host has port 3306 open ?
yes
n3kl, and is there a mysql user matched with this webserver IP/hostname ?
n3kl, and after creating it you issued flush privileges; or restarted mysql ?
I have set the permissions correct, and from the remote machine, I can connect to the database. That is not the issue.
yes
anyone else think /usr/share is just bloated?
I'd give it a try to re emerge php web hosting and make sure you have the right USE flags for mysql
and on the box that has cacti installed, the one that I have created the 'test' database to see if this was the problem, if I stop the web hosting with database services and I get Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' instead of access denied
n3kl, version of mysql ?
its using the wrong information, but I dont know where its stored. What use flags should be included. mysql? that should be it really, yes
mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.42, for pc-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 5.2
I also have apache2 use flag. DOn't know if that matters
try this
old_passwords = 1
on /etc/my.cnf
maybe you are using php with mysql4 libs
(I doubt it on gentoo the portage should avoid that)
but if you do maybe that's the reason
otherwise
perhaps, but just installed it last night
re-emerge php
n3kl, there are few odds of that, but you've tried plenty of thingsa
My arrow keys don't work in genkernel –menuconfig or vim. Is there some common problem?
thanks. the use flag apache2 would not cause any problems ?
n3kl, I don't think so, if you remove it, apache2 won't get built
n3kl, so I doubt it's a bad thing
and php won't build the php module with apxs to plug it into apache
alright, well thanks. I thought I was doing everything correctly.
so leave it
I think you are
unless someone else has something to ad
add*
argh
PLEASE
help me
I need to download some ebuilds by hand, but I can't find from where
I'm asking about a site similar to http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/alt/browser/trunk/prefix-overlay/ but hosting the plain portage tree
http://gentoo-portage.com/
sun-jdk is binary? no way to get the source?
not that i've seen
openjdk
for sun's stuff anyways
I didn't make myself clear; not just the .ebuild file itself, but the whole package
like /usr/portage/dev-lang/ruby/
that one is actually in the prefix
yes, but =virtual/jdk depends on sun-jdk
but others arent
ideally, I'd like to be able to get it from the portage svn
but I can't find it
the details about openjdk are still being worked out. you can find the history about it on bugs.gentoo.org
guys I have gnome with gdesklets but it make my proc to stay at 30% or 40% of use, If I close gdesklets the proc go to 4 or 1% of use, is there alternative for gdesklets?
ok thanks
I have another question, the packages masked on 2006.1 are the same that the ones masked on 2007.0 ? if so I have no reasons to change profile
the profile adds custom use flags.
hi im trying to fix my gcc , i seem to have 2 versions,.
i have 3.3.6 and 4.1.2
how can i get rid of the 3.3.6. im going by the fixing chost doc
packages have changed from 2006.1 to 2007.0 so it is possible that use flag had changed too.
i seem to have 2 versions
nitro4ce, but use flags do not worry me that much
nitro4ce, as much as masked packages
jon___, what matters is the one that you have selected with gcc-config
fine
?
[2] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.2 *
nitro4ce, for instance I don't like unmasking packages and gtkpod requires libgpod-0.5.2, if libgpod-0.5.2 is still masked for AMD64 on profile 2007.0 then I don't have reasons to upgrade my profile
so im ok right?
jon___, yeah you should be fine
gcc-config -l
jon___, having the old gcc is good for things like compiling a kernel module for your current kernel if the kernel was compiled with the old gcc version and you don't want to change the kernel
gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.2
(if you want to use the new one)
nitro4ce, he is using it, there's the asterisk beside the option
didn't see it
:p
nitro4ce, for instance I don't like unmasking packages and gtkpod requires libgpod-0.5.2, if libgpod-0.5.2 is still masked for AMD64 on profile 2007.0 then I don't have reasons to upgrade my profile
ok
i get it :p
it was a statement, to be confirmed
am I right then?
if you don't like unmasking packages, what are you doing trying to run an AMD64 profile? it's inevitable
can someone do a emerge –info and tell me what your SYNC option is set to?
there are many packages masked not because of known issues, but just due to lack of testing
SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
thanks
yw
vertigoacid, I am running an AMD64 profile for the same reason I am not using Debian anymore
vertigoacid, because gentoo support for the platform is far better
howdy
Sayers, greetings
but if you're not willing to the work testing potentially bad packages, then you can't expect to be at the cutting edge
I'm having a pal install gentoo through SSH, it's quite nice.
I coulda got it if I new my HDD was HDC and not HDA
vertigoacid, well I end up unmasking them like I am doing now, I just try to avoid it sometimes
Sayers, sata drives?
no
I have a 'unique' style when I built this comp
:p
now I do things the right way
does the hardened profile use gcc3 by default?
yes
ah
dood, webapp-config copies the files to /var/www/. Thats where the config was that I needed. Not used to that. Kind of a strange way to setup vhosts, but, meh. Thanks
I have rc-update del eth0 default but evertime I restart the boot process still attempts to connect through eth0 and runs dhcpcd etc how do i turn this off
n3kl, cool I didn't know that, I don't run servers with gentoo, just my desktop
it probably should be net.eth0
yeah thats what i meant
rc-update show, and see if it's still showing in any runlevel
I never have. I am a debian freak myself, but I am test driving gentoo
n3kl, I use it on the desktop for the good 64 bit support only
there is a setting in /etc/rc.conf (or is it conf.d/rc ?) that will stop device initiated services.
gcc3 is the standard now
no joke, better than most
no its not showing in anylevel. ebrake: i will check that
how do I rebuild the package digest after editing the ebuild?
gcc4 is available but is cutting edge
n3kl, yeah, what are your reasons for test driving it?
eh, ebuild foo digest. thanks ;p
i'm really getting frustrated here…can't get eth0 working on my new gentoo installation (am in another distro now…not liveCD)
RC_PLUG_SERVICES in /etc/conf.d/rc
# ebuild /path/to/ebuild digest
that was me, but thanks
opps, that was for desp
thanks a lot, im trying that out right now.
i've been following the handbook to the letter, but am at a total loss…what am i missing that the livecd gets? both that and the minimal install cd could get my network going…
twistx, FYI
twistx, /usr/local/overlays need to be checked too
twistx, for portage rules stored inside a directory with the name of the overlay (vlos for this case)
my ftp apache geronimo server hosting is logging this
8 2007 [pid 24512] [Administrator] FAIL LOGIN: Client
over and over
is someone trying to access it?
mustmr, block the IP
yeah
lol
how do i block that ip?
man iptables
and put it on the deny chain
deny … it's not deny
DROP
but
why the hell is the guy trying to access it?
and how the hell did he got my ip address
mustmr, most probably it's a bot doing it
people scan ranges of ips
lol
mustmr, and it could have been just random too
why people do that?
find weak systems and exploit them
mustmr, because they have very boring lifes
lives
ok
blocked it
is there a way to block
mustmr, there you go
like, the guy tries 10 failed access
then he is blocked for the day
mustmr, there's a script called BFD
mustmr, google for bfd rfxnetworks
I think it's written for RH based distros
but you can use it with a bit of tweaking
or look for the alternative in gentoo's portage
hah, i use gentoo.
mustmr, me too but I've used it in other places for needs like that
hi
wussup
openoffice compiled with USE=odk, compiling has worked correctly (in /va/tmp/openoffice… there was a subfolder sdk_oo created etc.), but sdk has not been installed to /usr/lib/openoffice or any subdirectory
Could anybody already install the sdk? Did I look for it in the wrong location?
lol…i can't stand these bell lines…keeps going out of sync
but at least they don't do traffic shaping like rogers…ok, now i'd really like some help getting my internet connection going on new gentoo installation…can access config files to edit them from this distro, but am otherwise limited…anyone?
like i said, been following handbook to the letter, but am really stumped
Can one install linux on a usb stick, and then set up grub to boot from it?
Bit_Kid, yes
where would I find documentation on that
or find out how
Bit_Kid, mind you, the lifespan of such a drive would be measured in weeks, if its not mounted ro and using a nonjournaling fs…
ah
Bit_Kid, as far as installation goes, a flashdrive is a drive like any other
I found a page about it, I am going to read it.
thx
how can I tell if my copy of cryptsetup is "statically linked" ?
Bit_Kid, if you want a portable distro, id suggest steering away from gentoo and have a look at dsl/ndsl
i have kdm/xdm installed and have rc-update add xdm default. the .xinitrc in both /root and my /home/user file have exec startkde in them. but it still boots to a console login and the only way for me to get to the graphic login is to issue /etc/init.d/xdm restart
guys im having some troulbe getting my nvidia drivers to work properly. I followed the guide in the handbook step by step, however if i try to start X11 with the 'nvidia' driver vs the 'nv' driver the display will go dead. and when i ctrl alt backspace to the command line it will say failed to intialize GLX driver.
unable to open display (null)"
FireDemonSiC did you run eselect opengl set nvidia ?
is there a logical not operator in bash?
Yes, several times =/
FireDemonSiC what card do you have?
it said 'Switching to nvidia OpenGL interface…done!' so youd think it was working properly =/
AGP 6800 Ultra
FireDemonSiC, that just sets symlinks is all
FireDemonSiC, did you get X by using emerge xorg-x11?
in fact in the X11.conf file it lists the device location as 'PCI3:0:0'
or something like that
yes
FireDemonSiC, if you let some desktop "pull it in" it probably doesn't have all of X
thats how i got X
nah i got X through the command line
before i had a GUI
using emerge
im really lost here im not sure wtf is up
FireDemonSiC, it woks if you use the nv driver tho?
im sure that the kernel level nvidia drivers are disable and agp gart is disabled
yesa
if i use the nv driver
but then i dont have full rendering capabilities
and glxgears even fails to open
h/o let me start KDE and ill post the error
this is really wierd
FireDemonSiC, you have agpgart in your kernel but not the kernel's Direct Rendering, right?
let me triple check
but im pretty positive thats how i have it setup
FireDemonSiC, if it's not that, you may want to try a keyworded version of the nvidia-driver
anyone here have any experience using a creative zen vision under linus?
*linux
Is there any "trick", not to remove /var/tmp/openoffice after emerging?
is the copy of cryptsetup on the livecd statically linked?
alright, VES support is enabled, both nvidia rive and framebuffer support are disabled
what category is direct rendering in again?
any on here using KBFX ? i just emerged it and re-logged into KDE but nothing has happend
web.war, how can i do it? do i use a bash scripting?
!Hello | Sayers
FireDemonSiC agpgart and DRI are both under character devices
yo
ok ty ill go check
Any one here using KBFX ? i just emerge it and restarted KDE but nothing has happend
was having troulbe finding dri even with search
yes
agpgart is enabled and DRI is disabled
right click on panel
unlock
raight click again
and then "add applet to panel"
find kbfx and add
oh
btw
the error that glxgears returns is
Exstension GLX missing on display ":0.0"
Couldn't get an RGB: Double-Buffered visual
Double-Buffered visual
still looking for help with getting eth0 working…
whats wrong with your eth0?
won't load…can't do nuttin' with it…new install and i've tried just about everything
O.o
thats strange
i can't finish the full install until that's working…am in another distro now
did you set the config file for dhcp?
and install a dhcp client?
or is it not even detected?
Is glx commented out in xorg.conf FireDemonSic?
nope…but i could look for it…those files are editable from this distro…yes i installed the dhcpcd
nope
it's not detected
I followed the nvidia handbook section, left glx commented in and dri commented out
i cant figure out wtf is up
funny that the minimal install cd and the livecd could both get it working
wtf
thats wierd
hi all, just installed x86_amd64_2007.0 on a box with a SATA drive, in the grub.conf … should the root settings be root=/dev/sda3 etc?
h/o let me check what i hjad mione set to
well
what partition did you make /?
And you are sure the glx module is really loaded?
sda3
yes…i've been following the handbook too…funny how you're told in a few places to use modprobe, even before you finish the first pre-reboot…but you can't use modprobe until you're in your new install on the hdd
i followed the amd64 handbook, and replaced all instances of hd with sd … except for the GRUB install
Lunate
no
i dont beliueve it is
thats the oproblem
and i cant figure out why
check the logs
what was the command again to start a command line cursor
ill show you the error X gives
brogen
er alt-fx?
gpm
if you make '/' on your third partition and your using a sata device then yes
/dev/sda3
that is granted it is the first SATA drive you have /'/ on
ok
h/o
ill post the error
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
yes
if you only have one hdd
ah k, i think i might have worked out the issue, yes only 1 SATA drive
when i did mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo/ etc … i don't think i changed the hda3 to a sda3 etc … whoops
bwhen i did mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo/ etc … i don't think i changed the hda3 to a sda3 etc … whoops/b
it keeps reporting
"Unable to open display :0
when i try using the nvidia driver in xorg.conf
Brogen
reboot, bbs, thanks for tips
yes
Grub refers to hardware differently than linux kernel
for example
is the nvidia module loaded at all?
) would equal the 4th harddisk and the second partitioon on that
you mean
it's (hd3,1) isn't it?
eselect opengl set nvidia?
err
yes your correct
lol
sry
is there a command line program to convert pictures from one format to another, i.e. .bmp to .jpg or .gif to .jpg ?
lol
that dumba$$ flood control is even worse than winmx
'convert' from imagemagick
imagemagick
just hit enter less often.
How do I apply a patch for an ebuild? I am trying to fix snes9x from this bug: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=170568
well
anyone got any ideas =/
thx rickest mustmr
how can i patch somthing in portage if everytime I go to emerge it unpacks it again?
im even prepared to do a complete emerge -C of both xorg and the nvidia drivers
was the nvidia module loaded?
how do i tell?
lsmod
oh that
yes it is loaded
modprobe nvidia
can someone tell me what i need to do to get gtk relm
i did that awhile back
i can not find it on the web at all
both glxinfo and glxgears are still reporting errors opening display
and X11 reports GLX driver not found when i try to load it with 'nvidia'
xorg might be looking in the wrong directories then
how do i determine that?
I am trying to edit an ebuild but after changing it.. it is now masked by corruption and the filesize does not match the recorded size.. how can I get portage to use the edited ebuild?
i tried to digest blah.ebuild but I get: digest: NSS_Init failed in directory /tmp
ah, ebuild blah.ebild digest ..
this is really getting irritating
you can try setting the modulepath to the nvidia directory
if xorg can't find the driver it might not be looking in the right places
Where does sshd keep its log files?
how do you get the temperature sensors working in gkrellm ??
i cant see anything in /var/log
wherever you told it to keep them, check your sshd_config
thanks blackace
hi
where would i set the modulepath?
uh
is it possible to redigest an ebuild without downloading all the distfiles?
In the Files section
I just want to use that ebuild myself, after editing it
You could also try finding the file called nvidia_drv.so
and link it to the directory it should be (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/
what is the easiest way to look at messages printed out by emerge?
im trying to export a a diagram created in .dia , and it crashes.. version is .95
like when installing multiple packages, and everything goes by too quick to catch it
im trying to export it to .png
anybody here ever trycode blocks even if it's masked?
can someone tell me how are the checksums in Manifest generated?
where is the xorg.conf usually stored for normal users (non root?)
ebuild path/to/ebuild/aaa.ebuild digest
systm, /etc/X11/xorg.conf
if you want generate this by hand
not quite; that attempts to regenerate *all* the digests
and I just want to redigest the ebuild file, without downloading hundreds of megs of binaries..
no
no?
we can talk in polish, if you want
oh

hope the reinstall goes better
for some reason, root can login via gdm, but my user can. is there probably some config that i hastily missed?
good luck settin
sorry i cant help you
what package does xgettext come in?
sys-devel/gettext (/usr/bin/xgettext)
ok thanks
ahhhhhh
the Manifest is PGP-signed
blah
what is the nls flag for?
TheLorax, native language support
but what does that mean?
TheLorax, /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc says what most flags do
hi everyone,
have a doubt, i did download a ebuild .tbz2 , i'm new in geento, how do I install it
tdr, if my system is english, can I remove it in /etc/make.conf?
TheLorax, i'm guessing yes
tdr, I've done it and nothing bad happend except that azureus has funky undreadable text.
err … that sounds quite, how to say this, confused
guys..
using minicom
i ctrl+c while an archive transfer
and the terminal characters got with symbols an weird…
how can i reset it??
then, tbz2 file is same as tar.bz2? just untar it?
i am using minicom 2.1
desp / jacekowski: Nein, kein polnisch bitte!
warum?
usually in gentoo you just tell emerge that you want it and it does that automatically
I carry the big cluebat?
which package are you trying to install?
gentoo-sources-2.6.1-r9
I'm ussing 2007 and that package is availabe in 2006.1
hello!
who using ati-drivers ? help me please
i did find that ebuild here http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/default-linux/sparc/sparc64/2006.1/
does anybody know how good a "Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme Audio" is working with gentoo linux / alsa / jack?
try this: "emerge -p gentoo-sources" - portage should tell you what it wants to install
ah, trying binary packages … you optimist
how can i switch between the ALT+F# terminals in a shell script?
my emerge tells: sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.21-r4, the fact is that I need 2.6.17-r9 not that version, 2.6.17-r9 is not availabe at 2007
ajaj need that sources, its because i need to recompile some kernel modules, just that no more
h
lh
oh, i found this" emerge file.tbz2, is that possible?
ok, why do you want that specific kernel sources?
how can I unmask a package that has a missing keyword?
because my sparc already has that kernel installed, I need to add some modules
apart from adding it to the ebuild
put the category/package name in /etc/portage/package.keywords maybe?
hi all.. for some reason the past 2 weeks i cannot sync portage anymore.. It just downloads 1 file and stops.. here's the pastebin. http://pastebin.ca/632843
ah, you don't want to upgrade the kernel?
no, no upgrade, the fact is that linux/sparc is the uglies linux i have use, not all works as x86
try another rsync server
which do you recommend that you know works? I;d like to test if the problem is from my side or theirs
you could try to mask newer versions … there's /etc/portage/package.mask for that
just add sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-(version_you_have) and try emerge gentoo-sources -p again
I put the categor/package in package.unmask, and this helped for the package.mask masking, but not for missing keyword masking
is there any info about install gentoo on hardware raid without using genkernel?
I also put the category/package in package.keyword, but that didn't make any difference
unmask, keyword, those filenames all look alike
ah, there's a chance you need to use a little trick … does it have any keywords?
anyone here good with / uses dia' ?
it has keywords, but not ppc-macos nor ~ppc-macos
TheLorax why would you need genkernel? what controller do you have?
tdr, nvraid
tdr, Silicon image
I think "**" as keyword might work in package.keywords
I tried adding ppc and ~ppc to my ACCEPT_KEYWORDS, but that didn't work for some reason
TheLorax and it's not finding it or something?
not hardware raid, that's fakeraid
yes, because the package doesn't have those
tdr, it find it just fine
what do I need to do to get ssh2 functions built in with php? is there a use flag I'm not aware of?
tdr, and yes it's fake hardware raid
no, the package *has* those, I'm just getting "!!! INVALID ACCEPT_KEYWORDS: ppc"
and same for ~ppc
hehehe
tdr, because I need initrd or something
tar, I don't know how to get that w/o genkernel
rsync error: received SIGINT, SIGTERM, or SIGHUP (code 20) at rsync.c(276) [receiver=2.6.9]
also ppc-macos … you should ask in #gentoo-alt what's the recommended method these days
yeah, but they're all dead
weird
ah, it's too early in the morning
give them some time to wake up
is it GENTOO_MIRRORS or SYNC that i chagne in make.conf for the portage mirrors ?
I guess you want to tweak SYNC
ahhhhh
package.keywordsssssss
got it now
nope, whatever mirror i try, it only downloads 1 file and then crash
what do I need to do to get ssh2 functions built in with php? is there a use flag I'm not aware of?
haha
emerge -pv php — look at useflags … and what is ssh2 in php?
your ISP doesn't like you
as long as it's my isp and not my gentoo effin up
DrEeevil, gives php the ability to connect to servers with ssh and execute commands
that doesn't even make sense - rsync works, just transferring more than one file not?
i'll pastebin
uhm…. aaargh …. eeeeeeew … that sounds like instant security issues
dooooooork
DrEeevil, howso?
have a botsnack

how do i use yahoo emoticons with pidgin? i've downloaded a theme fromkde-look.org

20070724" .. not sure if it's working or not
well
its still giving me the same prolbem
anyone care to take a whack at it ive given up
=/
yeah, that's a timestamp
hello
i have a lot of problem
hai hai
abouth ezmlm so
yes i know it's a timestamp i'm just wondering if it's reall fetching anything or just stuck there
can you help me
ok wtf that was total BS
portage pushes one timestamp, then only continues if that is older than 30 minutes or so
blood my a$$
*flood
language
and you did hit a 4 item in a short time limit
so back on subject, anyone know whats up?
is there any use ezmlm on gentoo ?
what's your issue again?
oh, so i should wait 5 minutes before i try again ?
yeah well if you ask me the flood control is a bit tight in here, but thats not up to me to deicde so oh well
no, it looks like your timestamp is "old enough"
ive installed the nvidia drivers according to the gentoo handbook, but when i try to start X using the nvidia driver the screen goes dead
too many issues with floods, so it is tight
also
howdy. trying to figure out why wine-9999 is blocked
nv driver works?
h/o let me see if i can reproduce the error
yes
nv driver works
er not blocked, but masked
=/
my question mainly is: does it show me any indication whatsoever that it's alive, or does it just stay idle on that line "attempting to fetch file dated: XXX" ?
heh, nvidia doesn't like you … on my system X starts, but randomly hangs with nvidia
FireDemonSiC, are you starting into twm or other?
netstat -pn maybe?
ta
DrEeevil, what nvidia card do you have?
How long should gcc take to compile?
7300LE
im starting into KDE
~1h at 2Ghz as a rough estimate
with nv driver
Hmm
DrEeevil, sounds old, have you tried older versions?
2.2 amd with 2 gigs of ram..
uhm … that's a rather new card, about half a year old and still sold
30 -40 mins in
DrEeevil, oh nvm it's new
and I haven't had any luck in the last 2 years with various cards
DrEeevil, why LE?
binary drivers are just concentrated pain
7300LE, wouldnt you use the nvidia-drivers ?
passively cooled … slowest I could find for PCI-Express
and set nvidia in xorg
I would if they stopped hardlocking my machine
oh crap…
Hmm
now now, no need to curse
3 8800gts
uhhh
lol
that wasnt a curse
lol
DrEeevil, I love nVidia I would never use anything else, I really need to know what card to watch out for.
whats that file where the XSESSION variable is stored?
how much heat does it generate?
Whats that one app to test fps?
DrEeevil, idle its around 50-60 C
eh, it's the drivers that are shhhhh ….ameful
glxgears ?
ah yes..
yeah
DrEeevil, so are radeaon drivers.
that doesnt work on here
uuuuurgh aaah
the fglrx driver is a segfault generator, and the radeon driver is also a bit … hmmmmm …
Cool, 14K default settings of glxgears
haha
yeah, I ment the one with 3d acccel
have a notebook with ati card, makes me wish to rain burning sulfur on IBM headquarters
Whats that one thing that looks really cool?
hah
theres the message
h/o
DrEeevil, I've had really good sucess with 7800GT and 7400Go and linux
hello. today i found that glsa-check won`t work and gives me this: http://rafb.net/p/eqhmzf10.html
ah yeah, that thing … ?!
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX estension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
wtf does that mean?
I've had crashes and other problems since the 28.xx drivers
:P Um, that thing thats on youtube everywere that everyone goes wow about
try "modprobe nvidia"
Lindasy Lohan?
oh, I guess you mean beryl!
hahaha
Ye, hows that work
last time i used beryl my driver freaked out
looks nice, crashes on my radeon
not the most stable of things
i have nvidia
yeah, the nvidia module is already running =/
hmmm, try disabling the GLX module in xorg.conf for now
right now i'm trying to get wine git installed
FireDeomonSiC, did you double check you don't need the legacy drivers?
im running a 6 series card…
k
Meh of gcc finshes and lets me install firefox-bin , il look into that stuff..
however the gentoo gods have somehow prevented me from just running emerge.
FireDemonSiC, commented out the dir line?
dri*
`VL: oh, that is nice … is your portage up-to-date?
just synced
LMFAO
theres the problem
this should be a simple fix
hah
`VL: emerge -p portage — does that want to update?
my card has dual DVI ports, but DVI port 1 is damaged, so I have to use the second one. When I try to run X with the nvidia driver, it send the signal to the first DVI port. I plugged my monitor into that port and got a screen, but everything was blue hence the damaged port
how do I change which monitor port the nvidia driver loads to?
ah, the driver does not care for such things … you want port 1
no, sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.9
your kidding…
`VL: looks like a broken encoding in a file to me
theres got to be a way to change that setting…
maybe clone-mode works
dual display mode?
how would i set that?
I've had lots of fun with assumptions in drivers
not sure, but you want "clone" mode where both displays are the same
well,
no effect…
i can get in and look around
but everything is blue
LOL
entire screen is shaded blue
=/
`VL: #gentoo-portage says might be a known issue, I'll see if I can narrow it down further
hehe
If mozilla-firefox-bin fails to compile, .. i dunno what il do
alright
ok
how about this. Device=PCI:3:0:0
doesnt one of those set the display port?
Why is it trying to compile gcc 3.3? stupid firefox..
Is there anyway to show the folder size, including the files inside threw the term?
du -hs folder
that will show you the total size of the folder, if you want to list the files, use "ls"
Great great great,
Yeah, thanks
http://pastebin.ca/632868
np, gl
Trying to do mozilla-firefox-bin
Also, anyones ff just ever deside it didnt like the system? and start spitting out BadAlloc?
nope _
-.-
Seriosuly woke up this morning.. ff was like.. Hi, **** you..
found bugzilla record: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162493, followed message #4, all ok now
i woke up this morning only to step on the socket extension so my workstation died :/
:/
I need to get a new comp thought Dont like having to keep windows on here
when did you last run emerge -uDN world?
I just did
Frigolit
Trying something i found searching
emerge -1atv libstdc++-v3
cause it was trying to compile sys-devel/gcc-3.3.6-r1… that's old
Yea
have you synced lately?
i sync before i -u world
i got gcc4
weird
Somethin with firefox i guess..
i don't see why ff-bin should depend on gcc-3.3.6-r1 :p
it's libstdc++ … it all makes sense, trust me
hm, could it be that an old libstdc++ depends on an old gcc?
o.o i thought emerging ff-bin just dl'ed and placed the binary.
Thats what i thought too..
hmm this is funny, on my dell m90 on kernel 2.6.22-r1 my sata disks becomes hda…its also using ide-disk though the ich7 intel sata stuff is included in kernel
anyone happens to have seen this yet?
brb
Can someone tell me why adding -N to emerge world would make it want to compile pidgin without msn/ssl?
Its newuse
so, maybe you edited your make.conf or changed your profile
yeah, but I dont get why it would do that.. nah already checked the make.conf
and honestly.. I dunno how to change profiles
Speaking of that damn bird.. i gota get that after i figure firefox.. *writes it down*
:P
brb.. someone stole my pen..and when you are by yourself.. kidna get creeped
well
Personaly, after using opera, I find it better then ff.. only thing is opera doesnt have the plugins I like
that did it
everything with the nvidia drivers works perfect now
all thats left it to find out how to change which DVI port the driver sends the screen to
hi. i have a sound blaster live. works nicely with alsa but my microphone does not work. i have umuted everything, selected the mic for input and turned the "volumes" up. i can even hear my voice on the speakers but still the mic is not recorded. any idea?
Is there problem with the r8101 chipset? I am running our company server on MSI K9AGM2 motherborad which has this chipset integrated. Today the card freezed. I had to manually restart the server. Since I am running samba on this server I need this server to be the most reliable computer in our company. Which card do you guys use on your servers (it should be 1Gbit/s)?
Hi guys, is there some tool to find out which packages installed aren't being used? (Like, lets say I once installed firefox and it installed gtk along with it, now I dont have firefox anymore and thus gtk is useless to me)
emerge –depclean
Thanks
be careful with it, as it might remove important packages (hence use –pretend or –ask)
Will do :]
-well sleep tiem, peace
anyone knows how to 'pause' the emerge process?
ctrl-z ?
for example I want to emerge kde or gnome
but I cannot let the computer running more than 10hours
so I need to interrupt the emerge
and then resume
ctrl-z will do it?
will it resume?
not for what you want to do
I guess it will actually send the process to the background
still running
hmm
any other ideas?
If you close the compileing window, you can always run –resume
cosminb, kill it. emerge –resume should pick it up afterwards. That doesn't pause the compiling, but remembers what you were emerging and tries to emerge it again
ctrl-c
kill it = xtrl-c?
*ctrl
118: because Cannot assign requested address". What would be the meaning of
ok
didn't know about –resume
thanks
Also, apache will no longer work and mysql fails to start. When I try to go to http://localhost it does not send an error message just endlessly attempts to load the page
hi guys, hope you are all well. I've got a bit of a scenario wrt the portage tree. I'd like to maintain a variation of the portage tree locally that looks mostly like the mainline tree, but containing some of my own modifications (mostly minor things where I don't agree with mainline).
is there an existing method of doing this or do I need to do some clever inventing?
koning, PORTAGE_OVERLAY
zsz, and if I want to make changes to existing ebuilds that are in mainline?
are there any independent dia to png converters out there/
?
koning, modify what you want in the overlay. It would be wise to make the ebuild names distinct from the main tree
dia seems to be crashing everytime I export it to png
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Create_an_Updated_Ebuild http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Installing_3rd_Party_Ebuilds
hello everybody, how can i split a file please ?
zsz, not if the modified ebuild is a dependency of something else, then renaming doesn't work.
perhaps also check out http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Write_Ebuilds
what order should the toolchain be rebuilt? bintutils, gcc, glibc, ??
Ah yay, i feel so happy using gentoo, seeing all the old names
james___, man split
thanks, i should have emerge -s split …
james is an old name ? jk
…
Triffid_Hunter, i'm fine with writing the ebuilds, it's the scenario of debian/ubuntu, ubuntu uses the main debian repository to variate from, i'd like to do something similar (but not to the debian/ubuntu extent) with gentoo.
Triffid_Hunter, thanks for the links.
james___, split is in coreutils
anyway, just about everything i change are things that can be committed back into mainline, except I can't always wait 6 months for someone to decide whether or not it's a good idea.
? i'm getting "i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc DNE" so i'm thinking emerge binutils gcc glibc ?
u? i'm getting "i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc DNE" so i'm thinking emerge binutils gcc glibc ?/u
Does GLX work w/ nvidia-legacy-drivers?
zsz, Triffid_Hunter - are there any mechanisms other than rsync for general users to obtain an up to date (ie, not web snapshot) copy of the tree? I would have liked git, but afaik gentoo uses either cvs or svn (can't remember which) …
And if so, what do I need to do to make it work w/ X
hello fellow gentoovians
if you write ebuilds, you should already have an overlay
X starts up fine w/ startx and uses the nvidia-legacy-drivers…but when I quit X, it says (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX.
three actually
legacy is how old? the NVidia docs should have a list
that wasn't the question though.
I have a GeForce2 mobile card.
what are you asking me?
I am not sure.
Legacy drivers are what gentoo.org said to use w/ GeForce2
X starts fine w/out them, just not GL
and I wish I had even a legacy NVidia card anyways, that error just means DRI failed
right
perhaps you need to eselect opengl set nvidia ?
that usually helps
What does that mean?
mmmmnnn torret sites ftw
some mirrors have the tree exposed via http/ftp
porn adds and other goodies
it means tell x to use nvidia opengl libraries
Triffid_Hunter, thanks.
Ok, I issued that command, and it said switching to nvidia GL drivers…ok! but i still get the GLX error.
do I need to change my xorg.conf?
Is GLX the same as XGL?
no
the old libstdc++ is parts of an old gcc
What do I need to change to make the error go away.
glx is the GL eXtension
ye, thought so
XGL is X-Server using OpenGL
there is a DRI section in my conf
needed by binary packages and other cruft
Group 0
You can keep the same name, if you want. In this case, the overlayed ebuild will take precedence over main one.
yep. it tells you which overlay it's using when you emerge -avt whatever too
however, now I've got a strange question, the example used above is xchat, say there is a 2.0.8 in my overlay, and now 2.0.8-r1 becomes available in mainline - which one now takes precedence?
Assume both are "stable"
mainline is a more recent version. overlay only takes precedence for same version
umainline is a more recent version. overlay only takes precedence for same version/u
Triffid_Hunter, i can see that i'm going to need to invent a rather cumbersome process here in order to exactly what I want to be doing. thanks for your assistance, at least you put me on a path.
when I run nvidia-settings, in the OpenGL/GLX Information part, it says The OpenGL extension 'GLX is not supported by the X server or there was a problem retrieving GLX information from the X server.
adios folks, time to go see some clients.
that's because it failed to load glx
Well, ya…but how to I make it load GLX?
My card can definitely do GL :p
simply telling it to as per the nvidia howto works fine for me
no pdfedit ebuild? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDFedit
Bit_Kid, If you're on nvidia, you do _not_ want DRI
Load "glx"
What is that?
Load "glx"?
Its what i got in my xorg.conf
to load glx
Can I just put it anywhere in xorg.conf?
how can I insert text ontop of a pdf?
Um.. not sure
Bit_Kid, Has to go under Section "Module"
ye
i will try it
hmm on 2.6.22-r1 my kernel doesnt match my sata disk to driver sd (as before) but uses ide-disk ….anyone happens to know a option i could pass to kernel or anything to adjust this behaviour?
Workz!
Thx all
And make sure you did the eselect opengl set nvidia
on a dell m90
and don't you still have to restart X after all that?
yes
I restarted X
and nvidia-settings showed the glx info.
And no more error about GLX when I quit X.
thx very much
Anyone know how I get my toolbar/menubar back in xfce4-terminal?
Does Gnome take a long time to emerge?
Bit_Kid, Yeah
yeh
gnome = bloatware
lethalrocks, ctrl+m
Can I still use some gnome things in fluxbox if I don'
dont emerge gnome
that is why I am asking
ya sure
nolimitsoya, Doesn't work, even after quitting screen, I found it though, shift-f10
ok
but you wont be satisfied with flux as desktop :p
Well Linux doesn't like gnome
Thats what i use
Linus*
lethalrocks, ah, i was sure i was right
it might install some libraries/gnome things, like the freaking gnome-vfs thingy or whatever it is, and gtk of course
what WM do people recommend
gnome
anyone know how to put text ontop of a pdf? I was reading about it in a linux magazine a few months ago…
fvwm
ion3
I'm using xfce atm, it's a nice very light competitor to gnome
ice
that is also a DM
kde

hmmm does mplayer encoder have support for flash per default or do i need a certain useflag ?
fac is it?
if I emerge a couple diff ones to try it out, what do I tell X to use?
How do I tell X to use a certain one?
can I use gimp to edit a pdf?
no
using a login manager like kdm or gdm you can select them
USE="aac" mplayer i believe it was
Bit_Kid, Or better yet, look at the screenshots on the sites
[[thufir]]: editing PDFs is quite tricky, even in windows
oops
wrong
But I wont kno if i like the feel of it unless i install it
But I wont kno if i like the feel of it unless i install it
it was an encoder with the letter "a" in it
lol
True
ahh oki thx
that was the wrong one
I have looked @ a few diff ones…but I have only ever used fluxbox
and a tiny bit of gnome
on ubuntu livecd
I feel I should avoid KDE
I'm used to gnome… I just couldn't be bothered buiding it
You'd be right to, Bit_Kid
why ?
bloated :/
I was reading about editing pdf's in a linux mag. wish I'd torn out the pages.
another way of saying it got everything ye require
It depends on what you use
JackD, no thats different
it looks bloaty
how about the ebuild at http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~sanda/pdfedit/ ?
isn't that what is on the knoppix disc?
kde
ya
yeah
and Mepis
but knoppix is especially ugly
If you use kdebase-startkde, you'll get a minimal environment
designed to be ugly
Oh, Bit_Kid, try wmaker
thx
jmbsvicetto, I guess that's a bit like gnome-light, which I don't like either
yeah!
you can make kde look how you want tbh
and fvwm
I emerged gedit after and got… totem?!
If you're comparing kde and gnome to *box or xfce, then that's true
anyhow, anynone happens to know a option i could pass to kernel so it does *not* use ide-disk? (i dont wanna ommit it from kernel entirely)
looks prettier
jmbsvicetto, Well, I'm using xfce
xfce & alt + tab = madness
But then you don't get k3b, amarok, kopete …
konsole
jmbsvicetto, why not?
amarok is nice.
do u guys ever use compiz or beryl
urxvt!
I prefer sonata +mpd
jmbsvicetto, you dont need to run kde to run kde-apps..
You can use them with other environments, but you'll need kdelibs for that
Bit_Kid, enlightenment and xfce have their own composite managers
is project sunrise, http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/sunrise, somewhat reliable?
so what?
that's the problem. why should apps be tied to a WM?! it's just suppose to be a manager, … OH, it's a "Desktop Environemnt" I hear Gates laughing somewhere with Gnome and KDE alongside
apps arent tied to a wm
Is that all compiz and beryl are, composite managers?
Well, the problem isn't the wm but the DE libs
[[thufir]]: yeah, ebuilds are reviewed by devs so..
yes
they shouldn't be, but they said, "no KDE, no Amarok " — that's a neg
Bit_Kid, Well, they're better than the one in xfce, and probably the one in e107, too
vap0rtranz, they *ARE NOT*
dont tell nonsense
But they do the same function
Hi! Anybody here able to help me with openoffice + sdk?
i didn't say it; i'm saying it shouldn't get that way;
hmm. thanks. how about http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/PDFedit?content=51831 ? it looks like pdfedit is builtin to kde?
vap0rtranz, dm!=toolkit. apps are bound to their toolkit, and perhaps some libs
not sure, what's your problem?
What I meant is that those apps fit together with kde, I never meant you couldn't run them without kde - which won't free you from having to use kdelibs
vap0rtranz, it never was that way, nobody ever intented it that way, why are you acting like its becoming that way?
