hi ive tried to google and search the bugs but i cannot find an answer i have an apache 224 on freebsd 62 jail
"It wasn't being used any more." The boss replies
"It wasn't being used any more." The boss replies
I can use ethtool to set them to 1000baseT but then I get interesting results
so now to install xfce i can just type emerge xfce? i noticed the text seems all big and ugly like in dos so i think its missing something w/ my video card
I thought it would be something like that. On debian its /etc/iftab
Miravlix, tell me where that is told in the handbook ?
it's xfce4
=P
I can transfer at about 40MB/s for about 5 seconds, until the speed crashes to about 500kb/s
AngusTheFuzz, strange :/
k ty
will it get x11 or w/e i need too automadicly?
no
Learning to config a kernel is complicated, so to make it simply genkernel all default to kitchen sink mode
yeah.. its a handy feature imo, but if you always want eth0 to be your first nic, its gotta be reset.
it will only get the headers
You might as well ask where is the kernel howto
Miravlix, yes and as a result most genkernel users (99%) never added the –menuconfig
run 'emerge xorg-x11' to install the full X11
Thats what people need to learn
yah its great…you just gotta know about it.
and they can learn that just as well with genkernel
Miravlix, fully agree, but the handbook uses genkernel as a shortcut, but too short
hello I want to format my hardware raid 5 80GB… I run fdisk /dev/sdb What format should i use ext2? This will be mainly for mysql database
hee hee this is so cool. stuff is working
Miravlix, just my opinion, did not intend to start any wat
Miravlix: genkernel is a choice, just like any other. there's disadvantages to each. regardless, no point in arguing more about it here.
*war
I have never rain fdisk on hardware raid before..i dont want to mess it up
there is no disadvantage to genkernel, thats bull
ran*
you want a journal.. ext3 at minimum
could I have a little question in vsftpd.conf topic?
Miravlix, yes and no, there is in not doing that –menuconfig
And I feel it's highly inappropiate to start a FUD war against genkernel
bbrooks i am pretty new myself but what i did was used fdisk to delete all the old partitions and make new 1s. then i ran mke2fs -j to format it to ext3
xfs isn't good for databases.. and i dont trust reiser.. so, probably ext3
do you have any very fast storage? if so, you might want to try to relocate the journal onto that.
cool! thanks
is there an easy way to transfer my chrooted environment to another shell?
yeah its a fast storage..scsi
how to create a NTFS file system under gentoo ?
nono, i mean faster than the raid5
there's a daily portage update
run the shell executable
in the last period
like a solid-state disk or battery-backed-ramdrive or something
ahh no I don't
ah ok
i wish compilling had a progress bar
ext3 will do
!quit thx
Personally I agree with starting your first boot with something close to a LiveCD kernel and keeping that around as a backup kernel, while you try to learn how to make a custom kernel.
Thms, create a new partiton with fdisk using ntfs type (7).
NieXS, I need more info than that. I'm a newb.
wee gentoo 3
i dont know enough about hardware to check this pc to what all hardware it has, what its compadible with, etc to do my own kernel config
Still cant choose a distro…
lspci?
matt271, you can just tick a lot of stuff and it will work.
Then you takes tiny bits out later.
read the handbook, if you think you want to install gentoo after that, go for it.
and you go on and on and on
untill it's small
hey _AxS_
lol that would take ages
fixed the problem
matt271, it does
If you don't have a clue yet, it's better to start with kitchen sink kernels made my experinced people.
your very first kernel will probably take an hour or so to configure, yeah.
matt271, lspci + pen + paper
…or more
wow
and several days to get it right
hahaaha
there's a lot of reading. '?' is your friend
kernel configuration is like anything else in linux. lots of reading.
nah, probably two attempts.. a good 4 hours and you'll have one that works
i havnt read much so far. just the gentoo hand book. when i was playing w/ sabayon i didnt read crap
I need to transfer my chrooted environment to another shell. Is there an easy way to do that?
what do you mean by 'transfer' ?
qemu have problem to run 64bits linux kernels?
_AxS_, getting the working one is easy. It's the tweakin that's the hard part (well….not hard…just takes time"
in one shell you chrooted, now you want to switch to another? no. just chroot again in the other one
_AxS_, well, ok. I just wanted to avoid some typing
hey guys
_AxS_, and I fixed the X problem. ICEautority gave problem. I run startx as root once so that might have been the problem. Running Xfce4 now in compiz-fusion so things are good
i accidentaly set my boot partition to 500MB on instead of 64M
sweet
is there a way to fix that after installing the whole system?
np2, good. Then you can have a gazillion kernels at once
it's sda1 and i already have sda3 with a few gigas
make sda2 bigger
not really.. you can _try_ and repartition using gparted or something, but.. i wouldn't bother tbh.
np2, not easily.. maybe with a gparted livecd
np2, backup the kernels you are using and repartition the partition with fdisk
you mean, boot from the live cd
It's easy enough to shrink the boot partition, but what are you going to do with the spare space?
np2, yes
remove sda1 and sda2
and then rebuild them
np2, either that or if you wanted to extend sda3 you really do need the gparted cd
Do you have room to move the data on sda1 and sda2 elsewhere?
when i was on sabayon i dont think there even was a boot partition the /boot was on the main os partition
yes
lots of ppl run like that in gentoo too (me, for instance)
yes, well, gentoo isn't sabayon.
i have a lot of space yet
Go for it then, it shouldn't be much trouble then
but it's assinged to sda3, my / partition
matt271, it is still optional of course.. but nice to have to keep things sane
man
this thing is fucked up
i have just noticed
language
is it possible to configure gentoo to use a nokia phone for mobile internet access ?
my swap is 8gb
sorry
what the heck did i do????
bluetooth-enabled? yes apparently it is.. check gentoo-wiki.com for a howto
the amd64 manual doesn't have anything about shm/proc in their example fstab.conf? Is that obsolete or something?
man
sounds like you had an interesting time when you partitioned this
np2, must not have noticed. the only way to fix it is from gparted CD
thanks
how about through data cable ?
why not delete both and make a fourth partition in between?
i'm pretty sure the current baselayout mounts shm and proc itself, and doesn't care if it's in fstab or not.
no idea there.. YMMV with usb support for that
i guess i forgot to add the M to the end of the size of the partition and fdisk made them as 64 and 1024 cylinders
that would do it. so you just have 3 partitions?
yes, i have 3 partitions, and the first two are messed up
Skunky, ok ok, I'll have to hope you're right
it aches, it's been three days of compiling and setting up, and when i'm about to finish
this happens
easily handled. copy everything in /boot to sime dir in /, then kill the first two partitions, and make 3 partitions.
s/sime/some/
hmm im getting errors now Disk /dev/sdb1 doesn't contain a valid partition table
so that things look 'normal' you probably want to make partition 2 be an 'extended' partition
bbrooks, /dev/sdb1 is not a disk.. /dev/sdb is
sdb1 is a partition. check /dev/sdb (the drive)
you fed it a partition, partitions don't have partition tables.
unless you really want to be trickky
whoops wrong output Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table
what about the gparted cd? can i erase the two broken partitions, merge part of the space to sda3 and redo the first two?
Would I need gtk, gnome and kde support for IceWM + Compiz/XGL? I want a pretty basic WM, but with a nice look to it (that's why I want XGL or compiz)
Anyone that wants to help out making sure a new Linux game runs on Gentoo Distributions, check out http://betas.linuxgamepublishing.com/ and sign up for there X3 beta.
what is sdb ?
my raid 5
_AxS_ my hardware raid 5 volume
you can try, yep. i don't trust partition-resizers myself so you do have a good chance that it's going to fail
_AxS_ i just formated with ext3
Hi
how did you format it if it has no partition table?
ok
if it fails, you're starting from scratch.
when starting a mail server, are there any guides on how to open up the appropriate ports?
is x11 normally 150 packages?
personally, i'd just use the new space as another partition, and mount it someplace (say, /usr/portage, or /var, or something)
i never set use tags yet im worried its installing kde or something too
yep.. they're all small
bbrooks, raid 5s are never /dev/sd*.. they are /dev/md* usually (or /dev/mapper/* for dmraid)
_AxS_ hmm when I went back into fdisk..no partitions are there
I use lvms and ext2 ext3 partitions, resizing works quite well there
x11 is big
kde needs xorg, xorg doesn't need kde
matt271, most of them are fast.. but… I suspect you get more then just xorg, probably gnome too or kde
bbrooks, whoops
keymaps, should Swedes use sv-latin1 or se-lat6?
bbrooks, unless it really is scsi raid
thanks
you set your VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES in make.conf right?
yeah its scsi raid 5
_AxS_, do all WM's need xorg?
you can do the resize with lvm tools in that case cant u?
_AxS_ no?
if you want to run them locally, yes.
hello, wanted to ask weather it's possible to get windows-like fonts? cause the fonts look so very sharp and the websites look kinda odd
otherwise they'll just grab the libs
bbrooks, does `fdisk -l` show the device ok?
It's a 3 part step, first lvms resize, then fsck then resize2fs
sv-latin1 is what i use
Ehnvis, tack
you want to do that, so you don't grab drivers for all kinds of things you wont use.
what's your video card?
I think lvm can call fsck and resize for you, but it wasn't working in some lvm I tried a year ago
right. so no need for gparted
I created my partition /dev/sdb1 1 17816 143106988+ 83 Linux
exty, is media-fonts/corefonts what you are after?
_AxS_, do graphical apps need WM's?
dunno havnt took this comp apart to check
not usually, but if they're X11 apps then they need Xorg. they could use framebuffer tho
Leth001, course they do
No, but they might need extra jazz that the WM comes with, like gtk or KDE stuff
check gentoo-wiki.com and search for xorg and fonts
oh i know what I did
they need X at least
matt271, it's usually not necessary to take it apart to tell.. `lspci` will show you a video card
matt271, lspci ? assuming its pci
You can run wine fine without a WDM for example
psymin, I don't know tbh, I'm not on my gentoo box, just searching for some kind of recommendations on smooth looking fonts, cause the default ones I see with kde on don't look so good
Miravlix, _AxS_, does that mean that WM's need gtk and kde libraries?
why not take a look at some and see what their dependencies are
Gnomes WM need Gnome libraries and KDE need KDE Libraries, xfce doesn't need Gnome/KDE libraries
and xfce4 is nice (
Miravlix, I just want a basic wm. Like blackbox or IceWM, kde and gnome is too fat
fluxbox ?
try Xfce4 Leth001
xfce4 IS nice
really small , fast , but still a lot of options
_AxS_, will I be able to run XGL/Compiz on fluxbox?
that and Compiz-fusion and you'll be rocking
no idea. i would asume so
why not?
Suppose it will work.
I guess Gnome and KDE's feature richness could be seen as FAT, but it does seem a bit unfair to claim edlin is better than nano because it's smaller
i can't see what xgl/compiz would actually do to/for fluxbox though.
Leth001 you will imo flux creates the windows and emerald manages it
_AxS_, the expose function for example.
FVWM is clearly the best, but it takes some configuring.
ok, so enough with the WM debates…
Miravlix, actually with the new split kde packages I'm starting to like it, no .. shit .. which used to come when u emerged it, now I can get clean simple kde
anyone looking for gentoo help?
timmy_boy, could you give me a link to FVWM (screenshots etc)
ok I am gettin really scared right now
Hmm? Your talking about the KDE Bundle, not just the KDWin?
whyso?
still no gmail-smtp capable sylpheed in portage?
ok all people forget that. Fluxbox it is.
let's step back — first off, what raid controller do you have?
Miravlix I'm talking about the basic kde desktop, just to start it
KDWin is what you compare Xfce4 to
I am under my new /dev/sdb1 and I see my gentoo system
Or gnome-session
All the other jazz is extras
gnome's WM is metacity =P
Miravlix the WHOLE kde is something that has useless:useful ratio 5:1
its a perc 4
huh? xfwm4 is something you would compare with kwin..
what module does that use in the kernel?
I think fluxbox looks nice. The more basic it is the better imo
you want basic, try FVWM
8.0 RAID bus controller: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID controller 4/Di (rev
Yes, xfce, twm, fwm and all those is bare bone window mangers, just like Kwin, gnome-session is the bare bone Gnome/KDE window manager
ok, so how do you know that your system is even using it?
Leth001, twm
xfce is not window manager..
Gnome's wm is metacity
NeddySeagoon, why TWM instead of FVWM or fluxbox?
i mean, you gotta have a driver for it in lsmod or something..
xfce is a full blown desktop environment with calendar, text editor, mixer, etc. xfwm4 is it's window manager.
I'm partitioning my drive for a new gentoo installation and plan to have partitions for /boot, swap, and /. Is there any performance reason swap shouldn't be placed at the end of the disk?
I want to place swap there so I have control to delete the current swap partition, resize the main partition, and recreate the swap partition with a new size.
anyone know of a usb external dvd-rw that works with linux?
OH!! megaraid_box
mine sucks
I'd guess all of them will
swap is better if added to the front of the drive on another drive.
….i believe things are faster or more quickly accessed when they are in the center of the disk.
the one I have doesnt
does it recognize the device at all?
gets a sg0 device
but doesn't write dvd's or cd's
but doesn't work
xcdroast recognizes it
crappy
sg0 is scsi-generic.
aye
you can't use that as a drive. you need 'sr0' or something
_AxS_, do you mean it's physically faster because of the distance the "pin" has to travel?
yea thats what I ment
I am trying to install phpmyadmin but webapp-config keeps giving me an error that apache is not installed and to install apache 1.3. This is a clean install of gentoo from minimal CD on an amd64 platform. I did try emerge –sync then emerge -av webapp-config but it did not fix it.
yeah.. the heads are more likely to have to travel less, as they never have to span the whole drive
Leth001, correct
is apache emerged?
is there any text editor like textmate for linux? something that can open a directory recursivly?
vi?
ok im not soo worried yet… I see my sda1 and sda3 and everything looks in tact… but when I look at /sdb1..it has everything that /sda3 has
_AxS_: Thank you. I wonder if I should really be worrying so much about swap. If I have 2GB of RAM, how much will swap actually affect performance, assuming I'm doing lots of compilation? I have an AMD64×2 CPU.. also
for ech in `find`; do [your-editor-here] $ech; done
whumbl, that depends on what you use the machine for….
whumbl, I asked about just that yesterday. more than 512 should be enough.
if you're gonna do video encoding, playing with 2d/3d images then swap would be good.
it sounds like you're accessing each drive individually or something
Leth001, depends, if you plan to make it a virtual server.. it may not be
check dmesg and see how things are defined… 'dmesg |grep -C 3 -i megaraid' should show something.
Thanks for the help, guys.
yes apache 2 is installed and phpinfo test page works properly
whumbl, consider swapping to file if it matters so much
all depends on your load. i'm still of the oldschool mindset that you want as much swap as you have ram.
Leth001, Well I use twm, I don't know the others
oh I know what I did… i put in fstab /dev/sdb1 / lol whoops
what's the best way to run a command on boot? Other than a cron job
what webapp-config version you using?
I don't think thats ever been true even on windows.
/etc/conf.d/local.start
…that wouldn't do anything unless /dev/sdb _is_ your gentoo
thanks likewhoa
used to be recommended to have 2xRAM as your swap.
you crazy window manager user,.. twm is so tiny
well my /dev/sda3 is /
that's what i recommend.
likewhoa it is the latest stable as of today, i will have to look up the version
it shouldn't be asking for ol apache-1.3 really.
That was when we counted memory in M's
now how do i setup fstab /dev/sdb1 to come up as an empty volume
likewhoa, I use it with VMC on remote boxes that don't have much bandwidth
what's wanting apache-1?
when is the last time you did an emerge –sync ?
likewhao I belive it is the same issue that is posted here http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-573393-highlight-webappconfig.html I have tried waht they suggested but it did not work, I am wondering if it is because I am on amd64
that's what I decided to do in this case, and hope it works out well. I'm planning to run a number of small VMs on this server but don't want to worry about adding a separate disk for swap… So, we'll see
The swap system in a 2.6 kernel doesn't depend on memory in your system
apache1 is either masked or removed from portage, gentoo decided to stop supporting it
it's not, because i use amd64
I ran emerge –sync about 20mins ago
likewhoa, I recall a time when thats all there was too ..
fstab is just mount points. that's the point, it doesnt have anything to do with what is actually on the partition
heh me too then i tried fvwm and stayed there.
What does it depend on?
I just installed gentoo on this pc yesterday
I honestly can't remember the 1.x or 2.4 kernels swap system
it didn't before either, afaik..
that was the _guide_..
Windows swap actually had some memory to swap nonsense
no idea bout windows..
1sec
I think thats where most people get there confusion from
likewhoa the webapp-config version I am using is 1.50.15
Having xRAM swap made sense with windows swap
does anybody know how to rip a cd into one single track with linux? thanks
makes sense here too.
data or audio?
cdparanoia
dd ?
only audio cds have tracks.
depends if he means data or audio
likewhoa, also tried that, wasnt able to figure out how do you know how?
Hi all
yeah I mean audio cd
I have a question
not true.. well, we could be talking semantics
dd for data, cdparanoia for audio. not sure if it has an option for that
I am installing gentoo on Athlon64 based computer but i need 32 bit environment
I have 1 GB on my Workstation and 1 GB on my server, but I could get away with 1 MB swap on both, it's never used, if it's used my machine stalls because something has spun out of control
….and?
what are the access rights to /usr/portage/distfiles by default?
_AlexTAI_ is that a question?
in Gentoo wiki I found save cflags where it is -march=k8
is this ok?
_AlexTAI_ yes
you mean for your i686 install? yeah afaik its fine
will it produce 64 or 32 bit code?
yes - for i686
if you're working with raw data you need alot of swap. doing 3d modeling and or video encoding eats up alot of ram/swap
_AlexTAI_ that is 64bit if I remember correctly
i agree
: Direct-Access MegaRAID LD1 RAID5 39756R 2.27 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 SCSI device sdb: 286220288 512-byte hdwr sectors (146545
thas is confusing me also
1
this is the exact error I get when webapp-config tries to install phpmyadmin to localhost –* Fatal error: Your configuration file sets the server type "Apache"* Fatal error: but the corresponding package does not seem to be installed!* Fatal error: Please "emerge =net-www/apache-1.3" or correct your settings.* Fatal error(s) - aborting
but I relay on gentoo wiki
sion_, okay..
i have 6GB of swap and when working with MAYA, my 2GB of RAM get eating and about 3GB of SWAP are too
I broke something T_T
hi all
one sec.
another question - what type of CPU I should choose in kernel?
ok
can i get you to rafb.net/paste that so that i can see how that's split across different lines?
anyone knowa ubunto?
hey, i've hit swap on my 2gig system just from gimp.
_AlexTAI_ imo it's got nothing to do with 32/64, it just wants ur processor, if u got a 64bit cpu and running a 32bit system, I think you should still go k8, guessing it only wants ur cpu
yea, i have two when i tried to opened 30 3000x images..
DuClare, unbreak then
not sure how
i think there's actually an 'athlon64' option that might be better to use.
_AlexTAI_ but don't trust me, that's only a guess
hi, i just found a directory named /portage/portage containing what seems to be like /usr/portage, i guess it isn't used and i can remove it safely ?
oh i think I just need to mount /dev/sdb1 /media/storage ?
will it create 32 or 64 bit kernel?
_AxS_ ain't k8 and athlon64 the same/
?
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/archive/
DuClare, ask to channel being specific, there is plenty people here that may know
listen..
on an amd64 arch, yes. dunno about on i686
_AlexTAI_, theres an entire install manuall specificall for athlon 64s on gentoo.org
he needs a 32bit enviromnent. he's not installing amd64
setting it to i686 forces 32bit AxS
listening
sion_, I'll first see if I can sort it on my own
set it to an athlonxp
the question is whether using -march=k8 is valid on a i686 install
wow, this is funny. Check out the email I got from a company after opting out of email. http://www.cs.rpi.edu/~hays/jcpenny.html
or i686 for 32
yep - for 64 bit environment
1 sec ill check my make.conf
c0rtx his cpu is 64bit, his install is 32bit
what phpmyadmin version you running?
im runnin an athlon64
in 32bit
why?
trying to install it clean 2.10.1
hays, its funny but it does not belong here
because unless your doing rendering or high end physics calculations
that's the version you got?
c0rtx, try 64bit for a change. you might notice the speed difference.
that 64 bit isnt gonna give me the speed increase to be worth the hastle
ive used 64bit
for using ubuntu 32bit or windows 32bit I understand… But gentoo in 32bit on 64bit cpu Oo odd
yea but 64bit is the future.
i switched back
64bit handles memory better ,u have 1g ram?
yes that is the version that when I do a emerge -av phpmyadmin it shows a status of R for rebuild
yes it is, but the software just doesnt support it yet
see how much is masked under ~amd64
i have over 800 packages installed on amd64, no problems here.
negative ive got 512
c0rtx u know u can install em unmasked
who saids ~arch is none workable?
ah, yes for you, stay 32bit.
anyone here running vmware-server on gentoo?
i do
but i dont like unstable systems
Kaffien, I am
understood
c0rtx, yes I agree with you there. I would probably do 32bit myself. If you have more than 3gb ram then you must have 64bit to use it I think
i cant seem to compile it
what would you suggest I mount that drive at?
im sorry..volume
Kaffien, will need to be more specific then that
i'm still looking…
theres away around the 32 bit in 64 though
i keep getting a strange jobserver not available msg brb
if u wanna make a secondary gentoo install and chroot it
into a 32bit env
I have installed phpmyadmin on about 10 other gentoo boxes this way and never encountered this before. The last box I just set up was about 3 weeks ago and that went fine.
do a qlist webapp-config
so what is your CHOST?
ok, so sda is a raid1, sdb is the raid5 — for sure?
ok want me to pastebin the output?
and CFLAGS?
_AxS_ yup
if I set multiple locales, which ones are default?
let me get on my adm64 system that runs webapp-config, brb i'll try to reproduce
my chost is i686
yea
ok. so what do you want to use the raid5 for?
and what is in CFLAGS?
but realise u can prolly get more arch specific, i keep it at i686 cause ive got a bunch of diskless nodes
which arch you specified?
just for mysql database services database
so it keeps compatibility
athlonxp, or k8
well, _just_ the mysql database means you mount it to /var/lib/mysql
personally i would probably mount it to /var
hey i got a build error for cairo that says to emerge with the x use flag set
but i have a -X in my use
just choose the latest amd 32 bit processor
and which type of CPU in kernel?
should it be X and not -X ?
I will put k8 in cflags
ok the link is http://pastebin.com/d1607a734
thoraxe, re emerge cairo then
it is k7
whatever you are emerging needs 'X' for cairo
for the kernel i used athlonxp
nod
i was emerging gnome
btw it's working fine for me on an amd64 system.. with phpmyadmin 2.10.1
my question was whether use should be X or -X
well then having '-X' is pretty silly
does the - mean not?
ok
that's what i figured
my vmware emerge complete out put is at http://rafb.net/p/CGPQed21.html
thoraxe, it should be X
add 'X' to USE and then emerge -uDN world
any help much appreciated im trying to get a production vmware apache geronimo server hosting going
thanks much
np
i am just gonna re emerge gnome and then -uDN
?
anyone here have any experience with openpbs
im sure phpadmin works fine, I have a box that is identical to the one I am using now that has it installed and it works. I think the problem is deffinitly with webapp-config
Kaffien, no offense, you do not run a production vmware server other then ESX
whatever, it's a vmware, i can always blow it away
no, do -uDN first
oRLY?
i can't reproduce it..
yeah, it'll be less work in the long run
ok
odd i was just in here the other day and said that esx wasnt what i needed
it failed on cairo immediately anyway
its only going to be running 3 vm's
I have never done this…so if I do mount /dev/sdb /var whats this going to do to …im from windows lol im new at this
Whew. Got that .docx file converted. Wondering if there is a way to make that process more fluid for someone who just cares about word processing.
has someone already made it to take an audio cd with different tracks on it and create an continuous, seamless mp3 file from it? (with linux?)
does ESX support gentoo?
Kaffien, I never had that error… well esx may not be needed but it is well supported, the usual commercial deal
look at this link http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-573393-highlight-webappconfig.html
Kaffien, it does not
which means i'll have to use another distro
tracing.
I think they point the problem out in the second post
Kaffien, yes.. still, I run server fine here (non esx) so I am not sure whats wrong
check your apache.. emerge apache -pv
well first off you can't mount /dev/sdb to /var , you need to mount /dev/sdb1 (where partition 1 on /dev/sdb takes up the whole drive)
probably because im running 64bit
make sure it's the new one… www-servers/apache not net-www/apache
Kaffien, could be, 32 bit here
but what it does is make /var and everything in it be stored on /dev/sdb1 instead of /dev/sda3
oops yep thats what I meant
apache-2.0.58-r2 rebuild, I just installed apache about 5 hrs ago
i see can you post your make.conf
Kaffien, best host guess… forum post with specifics… I cannot solve this one
i think it may have something to do with that
says www-servers/apache
WOW that freaking easy!
almost yeah.
Kaffien, after the weekend is over, yes, the server runs at work
ohhh
before you can mount it, you'll need to move everything from the current /var to the new partition
ok i'll ask again then if i cant figure it out
which on a live filesystem is actually not pretty
_AxS_ ok
Kaffien, gentoo + vmware-server and it works like a charm, but.. its a test server, not sure I would run production on it (SLA's and all)
and you're running webapp-config -I -h localhost phpmyadmin 2.10.1?
_AxS_ so mount it to someting temp..until I move everything?
VMWARE
mind you, if mysql isn't installed yet then mounting it to /var/lib/mysql would be very easy and painless
we'll see thats why im setting up a test first
i am not installing phpmyadmin with the vhost flag enabled so webapp-config is running automatically at the end of the emerge phpmyadmin
Kaffien, check VirtualBox too or whats the name
i hate virtual box lol
hmmm yeah well mysql is already installed and has databases
it cant even boot up a gentoo install
Kaffien, same here, and xen
run it manually.
ah ok. what i'd suggest then is booting a livecd to do the copy.
or booting into maintenance mode (same thing pretty much)
that error is not coming from webapp-config.
_AxS_ cool! I understand… thanks for your help
err, what is the correct time zone for GMT+2? GMT-2? (in /usr/share/zoneinfo/Etc)
no problem. BUT — before you start make sure that the raid array isn't letting you access each drive indivudually!
when you said sda and sdb are exactly the same that has be worried
run an strace on it please.
x11 is only on package 51 are the last 100 small or something?
no it was through kde gui….it came up when I added it to fstab
most are very small, yes
you got [———-] this much more longer to wait
ahhhh.. ok
I am looking in /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/WebappConfig/server.py and in the class Apache(Basic) section it shows dep = '=net-www/apache-1.3
that makes more sense now
matt271, get a drink, do dishes, clean your room and you will be fine
that's wrong.. should file a bug.
just fyi, emerging gnome will take 4x longer than emerging xorg
im going to be a pro at this secure linux web hosting stuff one day…. hahaha
hey
or more
nothing should depend on net-www/apache
question folks. I unmasked wine ~x86 but should have probably unmasked wine ~amd64 since I'm on 64bit.
can I change it and recompile webapp-config?
Does it matter?
im not going to use gnome, im going to use xfce4
I am gonna paste bin it for you to see
just delete that dependency or change it to new apache.
no need to recompile..
doesnt matter — as long as you satisfy the keywords so portage will emerge it, you get it.
ah ok
good
keywords don't actually have anything to do with how the package is built
myzrael, still clean up after
they're just filters
anyone got a decent clue on how to 'convert' a svn repository without the trunk, tags, branches structure to one with this?
clean up after sion?
myzrael, I assume you use the files in /etc/portage ?
the place where you might have a problem is if ~amd64 wine is a different version than ~x86 wine (and the ~x86 one won't actually compile on amd64)
uh…..yup
wine compiled fine here………
I would like to install gentoo on a computer that is connect to the router with a usb cable. I did modprobe usbnet and modprobe etc_ether but i don't know what to do after that when i do dhcpcd eth2 i reach the timout
good, no worries then
myzrael, then set the right thing there.. who knows how it changes in time
can anyone tell me why I can't mask a package? I need to get autoconf-2.6.0 installed instead of 2.6.1, making a pig's ear of it…
myzrael, after its done that is
it's done
what should I change that entry too? dep = '=www-servers/apache2 ?
At boot it detect eth0
they made a mistake and put old apache version. just switch it to apache-2.0
can't you just emerge =autoconf-2.6.0 ?
I need to change the net-www to www-servers right?
and if you can, file a bug report on this issue. thanks
lsusb is not reporting anything about usb network
ok
usb network?
BCMM, used ionice ? just curious
i tried putting =sys-devel/autoconf-2.6.1 into package.mask — seems to have no effect whatever, emerge -pv autoconf wants to use 2.6.1
sion_, What did you mean by cleaning up?
The package is already compiled
is it still saying that it will emerge it? or is it giving an error?
changing that to www-servers/apache-2.0 fixed it
it mean that should work but it seems it's not picking up that you have apache-2.0
the computer is connected ot the router using an usb cable i d'ont know how to say that
i'm just trying to install rubygems - and tripped over https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161566
sion_ means that you should fix it so package.keywords says ~amd64 instead of ~x86
myzrael, set the right flags in your package file for future emerges
it will not have any effect on things now but might in the future
_AxS_ — saya it will emerge it
= greater or equal, but it's not working so it's a bug on that package.
_AxS_, thanks
rafb.net/paste your package.mask and emerge output plz
oh
alright
thanks
it's not 2.6.1
it's 2.61
oh, that'd do it
myzrael, fool portage and eventually you will be a fool
Ah hah! Helps to have a brain…
i usually leave off the keyword on my package.keywords entries
tx all
Hi all. I've tried to emerge php with mysql support using 'USE="*- apache2 mysql sharedext" emerge -av php' and it seems to say that it's doing everything it should, but the mysql database services support does not seem to work. (I'm on PPC, if that matters for some reason) I enabled extension=mysql.so and it is in the extension dir. Am I missing something here?
just installed Portato by the way
I think the whole problem is that it is net-www instead of www-servers, so it has no idea where to even find apache2
really good app
it was net-www/apache-1.3 for you?
well, your use flags are probably messed if you specified on the command line like that
works fine
ta
add them to make.conf or to /etc/portage/package.use as appropriate
yes, check that pastebin
i prefer cli
_AxS_ I tried that also, but it still did not work.
what webapp-config version you running?
(in make.conf)
likewhoa, could be. But it is really easy to look trough the packages if you don't know what to choose.
emerge -uDN have anything pending? oh btw, what's with the -* ?
does gentoo work well when "imaged"
_AxS_ I have no ide
a.
rr, the *- ?
like when it's imaged with Ghost
eix -C cat -c
get rid of it then, if you dont know what it does
teach alexwait stage4
No such faq
1.50.15 it is the stable package for amd64
It was suggested by a friend, for some reason
gentoo alexwait stage4
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/vps/stage4-howto.xml
likewhoa, I know but still
i'm off again though
eating
maybe I should go unstable?
1.50.16 doesn't get affected by this.
do you have apache2 installed?
you might get better advice on #gentoo-amd64
file a bug report on the stable version
ty for stage 4. had no idea!
and what is it you're emerging?
I have apache 2 installed and I have the problem fixed
no it's fixed, found a bug in stable webapp-config
It is a bug in webapp-config's server.py file
ah.
it's your webapp-config stable version which has the wrong apache package set as dependency.
it points to net-www/apache instead of www-servers/apache
file a bug report
yeah, file a bug and mod the ebuild yourself, should fix it
I will once I figure out how to first time for everything
danky, recent change, file it
Hi, if i use a use flag in make.conf that is only useable by one port, will it work? Such as plugins for thunar
i can file one if you want.
emerge -uDN does not seem to work?
emerge -uDN world , sorry
likewhoa; sure go for it, I am working and got a ton of other things to get done on this server now that I have webapp-config running
It just prints out the usage info.
huh?
Oh
actually, emerge -uDNpv world
aight
that was holding back from installing all my other vhosting packages
heh
glad it's fixed
thanks for the assistance
help the users in the forum.
A use flag, plugins, is only a use for thunar, can i put it in my make.conf as a global flag to use without problem
yes.
will do
I have usbnet and cdc_ether modules loaded. When i plug the usb cable dmesg say eth2 register cdc_ether at device …
if any other package adds that as a USE, it'll pick up on it later
if i do dhcpcd eth2 it fail
cool, so can you configure eth2 with ifconfig?
Gotcha, thanks.
Apparently a lot is pending. I'll have it run all of that and see what happens afterwards. Thank you for your time.
you can do individual things in /etc/portage/package.use … tho i generally use that to override whatever is in my make.conf or the default USE for the profile for just 1 or 2 things, most stuff I add to make.conf, cuz I'm like that. (:
np.. good luck
ifconfig is listing eth2, but i don't know what to do
ifconfig eth2 [ip address]
at the risk of sounding stupid, is there an aptitude-like (as in from debian) browser of available packages for emerge? One that dosen't require X?
then try and ping your router or whatever you're connecting to
Hazard, links to packages.gentoo.org ?
?
for browsing packages, http://packages.gentoo.org or eix are your two best options
no X, that kinda requires a webbrowser
Oh.
links -g
Tried to use my nick again.
hazard_, links to packages.gentoo.org ?
Heh.
sorry
Hazard, soz
No worries.
Oh….
heh
here
_Axs_ ok i can ping my router
I was already seated, so it's not like I ran over to check.
good. ok so apparently its just dhcp that is failing.
Hazard, tab lazy my mistake
_AxS_, I always used gentoo-portage.com. Nothing wrong with that one?
do you have an eth0 or an eth1 that is working?
same thing
but why i use the same router with this computer
Ah ok
I seem to have broken tab completion…somehow, but thus is the story of my life.
HazardX2, aside that, eix is nice
on the computer i try to set up there is an eth0 listed by ifconfig but this device is not configured
I'll try it
I do it too, I've no place to be getting my panties in a bunch over it.
HazardX2, but its not like aptitude
ok good. well, it could be that the device doesn't work well with the dhcp protocol.. i've seen that before
on the pc i use to chat i use eth0. both comp are connected to the same router
I don't need the installer or package manager part, I just want browsing with more descriptiveness than what emerge–search returns
dhcpcd eth2 fails outright or just takes a very long time to work?
fail, timeout
Hazard, eix I guess, its more like a search thing, not browse, but it works if you know what you remotely look for
hm.
I don't really (typically) I have an idea what it does though
Whenever I quit X.org, or switch to another VT while it is running I get a message on my monitor saying "Out of range"
I configured my router dhcp range from 2 ip 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2
Hi, I edited the kernel parameter at boot time (grub) so that the kernel (compiled with genkernel) had "init=/bin/sh". But it seems that the boot sequence the same as usual. Can someone tell me what's happening please?
..are both assigned someplace? dhcp isn't an exact science, the sever could say both are in use
tty well (or at all)
Yes - any idea why?
192.168.0.1 is used by this computer, i did ifconfig eth2 192.168.0.2 on the other one
but if can't use dhcp and usb connection it is not important cause the computer i am seeting up will be on a network using eth0 late ron
Damnit.. I've finally got everything working on my gentoo box… and now it's just boring.. can't wait for something to break.
how can I redirect some port to localhost interface ?
i just need acces to internet for gentoo installation
lxthekid, want a hand ? gimme ssh
hahaha
nope, sorry it might be worth trying to set your x11 config to use a "safe" resolution (that being anything basically unbearable and less than 1024×768), and see if it handles it then
if it doesn't go stupid (eg not worky), then it may just be some weird problem between the card and the display regarding that resolution/refresh
(but beyond that, I have no idea)
what i need now is dns server ip ?
and default route, probably
'route add default gw [router ip]'
and edit /etc/resolv.conf and add 'nameserver [router ip]'
does the new NTFS write support work properly?
new = …ntfs3g?
Leth001, no
I don't think so
(there you go:P)
Well ok, I'll keep it read only (NTFS windows)
Leth001, that _AxS_ said, seperate emerge but it works
Hey all, I just discovered sudo with the "offensive" use flag… is there any way to get that functionality when logging in or using just "su" (i.e. for any password prompt…)?
Leth001, (test)
oh goody
tab completeion works again (how I ever missed the "enable tab completion" option is beyond me.
HazardX2, nah. I don't want to mess with my NTFS partition through linux.. yet
HazardX2, in gentoo.. you need to enable it using `eselect bashcomp (options)`
HazardX2, at least for bash
Leth001, ntfs3g as _AxS_ said if you are ready to go beyond read
yeah, ntfs3g is smart enough to not let you do what it knows it can't do safely
what filesystem should I use for fast large storage (not really raid, but not a boot drive either)
(?)
HazardX2, file system war ftw
_AxS_, sion_, that's ok. I'm just configuring my kernel and saw that ntfs option. It's not a big deal really, I'll try ntfs3g sometime.
read some benchmark articles on different filesystems, pick the one you like the best
I've read some stuff on reiser 4 (and it makes itself sound impressive)
Leth001, you should, still, enabling read only for now in kernel should be fine
HazardX2, its unsupported in gentoo… for a reason
anyone here have any experience with openpbs
!list
eruhaor2, !list yourself
kinda walked off last time i asked i apologize
meh, ext3 seems to work fine
Would someone be willing to tell me what emerge/portage is doing when it says its "Performing Global Updates: /usr/portage/profiles/updates/3Q-2007"
i had to put the same adress i have on the first comp into resolv.conf
it's updating the portage tree and installed packages.. sometimes packages move or change names, etc…
but it works now?
_AxS_, not profile ?
HI I'm really exhausted from trying to get apache2 running , can someone help me fix this?
Whats not working, ironfoot495 ?
profile is part of the tree
yes
_AxS_, ah I always wonderred
Well when I try to call for the localhost it say connection denied.
paste bin your configs so we can see whats wrong
I had some trouble with eth0 and when I got it fixed apache2 stopped working.
ok
do you use dhcp to get your address? if yes, please paste your /etc/hosts somewhere
do you mind if i PM you to ask a couple more simple/noob questions
lxthekid:URL: http://rafb.net/p/Vvw8F589.html
ok
im having a bit of an issue, im in the middle of an installl and gmp-4.2.1-r1 wont compile.
why not?
you can, but i dont actually pay attention to pm. you can probably ask here
URL: http://rafb.net/p/Q8Ww5J92.html
can anyone recommend a simple and quick TFTP package?
so the apache2 service is starting fine with no errors? Are you running iptables?
tftp-hpa
aftp is alright
Skunky, thanks
is apache listening to localhost?
no I don't think so.
Skunky, what all has to be done to set it up? Just emerge, start service, and log in as user?
apache2 is not running?
well there's your problem. connect to your external ip address
tftp doesn't know anything about users.
anyone know whats up with pbs_server and pbs_sched not being installed when emerging openpbs-commin
look at his /etc/hosts… it's… not right.
openpbs-common is just for init scripts.
do you have the 'server' use flag specified to torque?
well emerging openpbs doesnt seem to work
could you walk me through the procedure please ?
and i doubt it, though it did install torque
just re emerge with server use flag?
http://[ip address of eth0]/
emerge gnome is stuck on an endless loop
Just installed gentoo. BUT when I reboot, sata_nv complains about it can't do something about xfer, retry in 5 secs, then NOTHING happens. Tried unplug all sata discs and now it works. What can I do? Please help!?
where in the httpd.conf file do I put that info _AxS_:
you don't, you connect using that url instead of http://localhost
link: warning: blahblahblah seems to be moved
you're using an unstable gcc to do an initial install. that's not generally a good idea.
oh
how do i find files that that don't match a specific users ID
localhost is 127.0.0.1, if apache isn't listening to 127.0.0.1 then you'll get the error
imma see if its that server use flag, thanks for the point in a new direction
Any attempt that I make to use emerge (be it emerge –help, or emerge –sync, or a more regular use of it) emerge automatically attempts to update portage, why is that?
Please help me, when I try to boot with my sata discs, my computer hangs when sata_nv is trying to do something, but it gets stuck. Works fine when I unplug them, but what to do? PLEASE?
"localhost" on your machine isn't gonna resolve correctly… your /etc/hosts is fubar
Just had G working all but eth1/eth2. Then went 2 "make menuconfig" to add 3Com cards and rebooted. Now even eth0 refuses 2 open so dead all around in the connectivity part. Can't pastebin and need help. No connect so can't even irssi.
link: warning: blahblahblah seems to be moved
emerge gnome
your portage is old.
ifconfig -a, do you see anything?
Yeah I noticed.. that hosts file is a bit of a mess
In what package is lspci?
http://www.192.168.7.104.com/ firefox says it can't find the server at this address
pciutils
no .com
Does anybody know if there is a command line tool for musicbrainz? I'm looking to use it for some scripting.
ifconfig -a, udev probably re-numbered your nic's
no .com
just the numbers
Yes but no IPs
how do i instruct gentoo to compile something in C rather than in C++?
have you done "/etc/init.d/apache2 start"
but when I ifconfig this eth0 does exist ??!!!
im building an ~ machine, and it made it through most of the emerge -e world before it hit that…. hmm i might just leave not rebuild it with the newer toolchain for now
–skip can be my friend
I have a problem with emerge gnome… it does some stuff, and then scrolls a bunch of messages: link: warning: blahblahblah seems to be moved
of course not, it doesn't exist. http://192.168.7.104/ should work
search for update-world in forums
I set "Processor Type" to k8 - meanwhile it works good
I have to have these hard, not assignable, how do I do that?
Skunky, does tftp-hpa run as a service? or….?
C is not C++. you can't just make something written in C++ be compiled "in C".
What can I do if booting with my sata discs borks the computer? It freezes
ok, but dhcpcd eth# (where # is one of the ones in that list) works or no?
any help?
its written in C
* ERROR: cannot start netmount as net.eth0~ could not start
cannot start apache2 as net.eth0~ could not start
i need to compile it
but emerge keeps giveing me the error "-Wstrict-prototypes" is valid for C/ObjC but not for C++
what's the problem exactly?
look at /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent- stuff.
gcc file.c
If I can't fix this, I'm switching to Debian, so please somebody help
gcc [source] -o [output]
wait
nvm
that's where udev does it's thing. quite annoying.
fixed it self o.O
do you hvae '-Wstrict-prototypes' in CFLAGS?
nope
what are you compiling and how?
are you using c++ to compile it by mistale?
network question… while starting /etc/init.d/net.eth0, I get the error message "no loaded modules provide "default" (default_start)" - eth0 is created correct, but the default gateway isn't added, I have to add the route by hand. what's the problem?
vmware-modules
it does exist
emerge vmware-modules
how long does it take an average pc to emerge x11?
how can it be so big? is it not just a few images and some lines of code
good.
so you can access apache now?
hmm
no
his apache server can't even start
depends on hardware and use flags set.
cannot start netmount as net.eth0~ could not start
here is my make.conf http://rafb.net/p/3rIXxr36.html
maybe you need to fix your LAN first?
I'm really frustrated about all this I really need you all ???!!!!
I get a "clock skew" when #make the kernel, what to do? Have edited #date properly now
what do you mean, 'how can it be so big' ?
Hmm why do you have a net.eth0~ backup file?
oh, missed that
not me, it;s ironfoot495 problems.. mines all running good
n/m then
i dunno if i could cancel it, set use flags, then emerge it again
yeah my apache2 is really in bad shape??!!!
well this isn't a gentoo issue, so if you want better help, try #apache
what package is giving you that error?
vmware-modules
but we'll do what we can
hi all. i'm looking for someone with any mplayer h.264 1080p experience… i'm planning to upgrade my media center box soon and want to get some information on what sort of processor power I'll need for h.264 1080p
_AxS_, thanks, just saw it copying the files while finishing the emerge
ok I'll try it
kexec is support for loading different kernels when you have one loaded already?
so, anyone here on a P4 2.6Ghz or greater that can help me out?
cool
anything 1800Mhz and up, but dual-core would be nicer.
I'll go there and if no results I'll come back if you all don't mind.
well switching I suppose
im on a P d 2.8ghz
yea
I think it's a problem with your net.eth0 config
i think P d is just a doulcore P4
actually, not so much. I'm on a P4 1.8 right now and 720p is barely happening with all inloop filters off
yea
you said apache2 was working before you got the eth0 working wasnt it?
dualcore isn't going to help me, as far as i know, because the h.264 decoder that mplayer uses is not mutithreaded
gongloo, I use 1080p, but on a tricky setup, if you want real info, try mythtv-users (video geeks)
well i didn't say it would be faster.. you really want a good dual-core and atleast 2GB of ram for encoding to 1080p
only X or also gnome/kde?
i mean decoding, not encoding. encoding i can be patient about
s/likewhoa/matt271
eh
you mean the ML or the irc chan?
gongloo, irc
When I installed gentoo, something must have been *** with the time, as many files are modified tomorrow, in a year, 3 months ago, but actually just 2 hours ago. It complains alot about this. What to do?
vmware-modules gives me that error
the GPU handles the decoding.
is there a util to that cleans up /tmp on startup?
gongloo, as usual, be patient there too.. some are experts not all
which version?
absolutely not, unless you're on windows with purevideo or avivo
i've tried 15 and 13-r1
16 is masked
there's an option in rc i think
if you have information that proves otherwise i'd love to see it
15 and 13-r1
well then your cpu just can't handle it,.. is it skipping?
simple question I have QT3.3.8 and QT4.3.0 can I remove version 3 and rebuild my kde on QT4 ?
brb i need coffee … bad
of course it is
how much RAM you got?
i don't think so. kde is generally tied to a specific version of qt
evening folks, in twinview is it possible to have two seperate background images rather than a horrible sized one streched over different resolutions?
thank you Skunky was afraid of that but couldn't find any info about the subject
there was noone there !!!
anyone who knows anything about h.264 decoding knows that RAM is typically not the issue. the answer to your question is: enough.
not in twinview no. if you just did separate X on each screen though i think you can
no one were?
there was noone there??!!!
with an attitude like that, you're not likely to get much support here.
then you answered your own question, your cpu can't keep up with decoding.
yeah but then you get stuck with the not being able to drag windows accross problem
lxthekid:@ #apache
odd…
in #apache
yeah I know!!!
lol
back
mmmm coffee
well what's next (smile)
unwise … oh so very unwise
thats an idea
test
failed
you sound like you know what you're talking about but not really.
wow this chan has a lot of ppl in it
they must be like 90% idle
anyone here running linux on a thinkpad?
yea 50% are bots
probably lots of people
yes, also try #gentoo-laptop and thinkwiki.org
thinkwiki lol clever
what i'm trying to find out is not whether or not my cpu is able to keep up. i'm trying to find out what kind of power i'd need to have in order to keep up. perhaps you misunderstood my question.
did you look at my httpd.conf file??!!!
try #gentoo-apache too
ill phrase that more particularly, anyone currently here using gentoo on a thinkpad R60
obviously you need more cpu power don't you
or was that someone else??!!!
teach JonasNZ ask
Just ask, don't ask to ask, don't ask who's familiar. Don't ask if anyone knows about it. Just ask the question, it's the easiest way to get people to answer
ok on it
u dont even need to make it a qestuion. ex: every time i do this, that happens.
mzbotm, sometimes your to intelligent for your own good
yeah, i'm looking to upgrade. the old mobo i have in my current media center is only capable of doing 2.6ghz p4 at 400mhz fsb… i'm wondering if there's anything on the market right now that'll do software ffmpeg-based h264 decoding in 1080p in realtime
what is your system specs now?
your httpd.conf file is fine.. You said apache2 was working before you got your eth0 working right?
can someone help me with openvpn please. i set up a sme server and configured openvpn not to use certs but i cant configure my client not to use certs… any idea?
for the media center, p4 1.8 @ 400mhz fsb
i never knew media centers where so complicated. i have 1 from hp and it just came w/ win xp mce 2005 and it records tv and evertying in real time
it's about 6yrs old maybe?
..unfortunately no.. probalby yound have to configure openvpn to use certs.. :/
in other words, both your questions sucked, ask what you really wanna know, not what you think you need for somebody to be qualified to answer.
poor
time for an upgrade,.. if your video is skipping..
i'm not sure if there's any cpu on the market that can handle what i have to play though
i would go with a dual-core and pc2-800 RAM
…or get a different client?
went there I was the only one there.
great. thanks for your input
there sure is, just not a single core p4 at only 1800Mhz at 400Mhz fsb
you got proof?
you
i show 29 people there, maybe I typed it wrong? #gentoo-apache
likewhoa, its about bus speed more then cpu
oh ok
i mean, do you have proof that there's a cpu on the market that can handle h264 at 1080p via ffmpeg?
your httpd.conf file is fine.. You said apache2 was working before you got your eth0 working right?
yea, and 400Mhz not fast enough.
gongloo, I do dont ask specs, I use hardware encoding
i'm talking decoding
and that wouldn't be ffmpeg would it?
yea, i build systems for studios with dual-core opteron systems that deal with video encoding/decoding.
gongloo, nope, but I had no issues decoding
what hardware card?
myzrael is back for more !
sion_, hehe not really
in linux?
more of what?
likewhoa, not in store yet, samsung card
although my computer just crashed
X problem
what kind of work you do?
I went to a VT and back to X
black screen
and those studios would be using hardware for encoding/decoding obviously. and they clearly aren't using ffmpeg.
likewhoa, mostly being a slave
what log file should I check to figure out when/why my server powered off?
i hear that.
pr0n industry?
last crash?
_AxS_, I wish
try /var/log/messages to start, assuming you're using a syslogger that logs to that file.
last command.
_AxS_, spank that!
:P
likewhoa, product development at samsung
nice..
ohh, darn… nvm guys, my logger wasn't on for some reason :/
no wonder I was having trouble finding logging info… X-D
no hardware.. at all. mostly encoding with ffmpeg and rendering software i.e MAYA
so what is it exactly you're looking for?
lol antiNeo
should I enable QoS packet scheduling in the kernel?
your system is old, just upgrade allready
someone who can decode h264 in realtime using ffmpeg, so they can tell me what exact cpu they're using
no need unless you're gonna use it.
ahh
when you have exact figures, come back to me. otherwise, i don't want to hear it.
likewhoa, it's not going to enhance network stability and speed or smthn?
what's the specs on that card?
best bet will be google for that info
already tried. can't find any difinitive answers. most of the bencharks i see are coreavc on windows
likewhoa, the signal is external
listen to _AxS_
but again you trying to do things which your system can't handle.
lots of specs on 720p but not much on 1080p
how do I give my users view only rights to my new drive…. mount /dev/sdb /tempdrive
as i said i understand that. and i plan to upgrade. but i plan to know what to upgrade to first. for this i want real life experience from someone who has a chip that will do what i want.
well, you could see what speed you get on your system, them use bogomips to uprate it to 30fps ?
by that measure, i'd need a 50Ghz machine. obviously not a good computation to make
'view only' ? as in no write?
yup… is it mount -r /dev/sdb1 /tempdrive
really? bogomips don't scale linearly
why are you concerned with cpu when dealing with hd decoding?
have you looked at dstat output while decoding the video?
if you're mounting read-only then that would do it
not really. a lot has to do with the FSB, and things can get exponentially faster in the worst case with a fsb increase
otherwise it has to do with the filesystem
great..what if they wanted to write to it?
oh, so you want more than processor, you want processor/motherboard combos
ram speed probably too
i don't follow what you're trying to do..
well the two go hand-in-hand, yes. but typically processors are rated for use with a certain fsb frequency, so i'd be happy with just a processor at the moment
isn't this going to be used for mysql?
i'm trying to build a new media center pc
sorry im newbish at permissions
he can't watch pr0n in 1080p
Hey, sorry took awhile, but all the "70-persistent" stuff are blank files. Do I need something there?
lol
its cheaper to buy one pre-made. trust me..
ok hmmm im logged in under my user in kde… after I mounted /dev/sdb1 to /tempdrive… I cant view it with my user..i just want to browse through stuff
get a motherboard and cpu that support 1333MHz
going again
pre-made system?
Movie started
hehe
yeah, a pvr or something that's designed to do HD
oh i see.
pvr's got a unefficiency in the streaming
that wouldn't be waht i'm after
so umm…can anyone recommend a tftp client?
i have 720p and 1080p home-made encodes
has anyone here installed vmware tools in centos 5, and can give some reccomendations on how to go about doing this?
also, is it best practice to install vmware-tools on a server, without gui or X
vm/install vmware tools
that's really all that's required
jds2001, Sorry I neglected to say this is a VMware ESX server, and I have manually copied the rpm to the vm, and run rpm -i , it installs and takes me back to the command line, but even after a reboot of the vm, esx console still says vmware tools not installed
yep
run vmware-config-tools.pl
which was installed by that rpm
jds2001, thanks busy trying now, so with centos 5 I dont need additional kernel headers or dev packages or anything for vm tools?
does ESX support rhel5 yet?
i.e. is it an OS option when you make the VM?
you might need kernel-devel and compilers if not, but that would be it.
jds2001, yes esx 3.02 does support it, but I am on esx 3.01, but that should still work tho.
if not I can upgrade version to 3.02
yes
im running centos5 on vmware server 1.0.2
jds2001, I am not winning , it wants the location of the C header files, which i give as /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-8.1.8.el5-i686/ but then it says " even if it were to compile it would not load into your running kernel"
huh?
ive never seen that before.
you are sure you're running 2.6.18-8.1.8?
jds2001, 2.6.18-8.el5
thats what uname returns
is there a keyboard shortcut for switching desktops?
jds2001, any ideas?
Reboot into the new kernel.
Ctrl-Alt-arrow key
thankyou kind sir
vmware is buggy on all newer kernels
infact anything above 2.6.9.x
It is?
linux_probe, hmm thats interesting, buggy how?
it's documented on vmware site
Please note that there are problems using kernel 2.6.19 (and newer) on hosts and guests, workarounds exists in VMTN.
i was off on the kernel number
linux_probe, so is it a better idea to stick to centos 4 on vmware for now?
there is a #vmware channel on freenode here also
linux_probe, thanks, for that vmware announcement?
(http://vmware.com/community/) might already have the answer to your question.
whats the url of the vmware page lsting the issues
thats the topic on #vmware
cool thanks
linux_probe, is it even necessary to install vmware tools on a server hosting only install that has no X
it should run without it, but if you look the networking is limited to 10Mbps
and will likely run a little slower
linux_probe, what are the necessary steps involved in installing vmware tools on esx once I have the rpm installed?
if it's a home server or such it should be fine, if ethernet speed isn't a big issue
would i allways have to get additional compilers and kernels etc?
linux_probe, no these are all production servers at our datcentre
if it's common distro, on older kernel, many time vmware tools has pre-compiled modules
i honestly dont run esx
i can say that if there's no pre-compiled modules for your distro, then yes you would have to have kernel-devel / source, make and gcc on the system for it to compile
if loading a bunch of the same machines you may be able to compile host on one then copy them to the rest, but there im not 100% sure
linux_probe, thanks…..
you should be able to copy the whole VM if you need identical installs on multiple machines
after manually editing the .config it is required to run make oldconfig or can I run make right after editing it?
linux_probe, just out of interest what are the types of bugs they are saying are related to newer kernels and vmware?
the bugs are vmware tools and vmware server/s will not compile right onot them
just a matter of vmware needing to update and change everything
seems they'd rather stay back on more proven tested kernels though
linux_probe, just got the vmware tools to install correctly….
it kind of will Trentster
if you was using gui the mouse / kb wouldnt auto transfer
linux_probe, had to do a yum -y upgrade kernel kernel-devel
the ethernet module usualy compile right though
linux_probe, thanks for your help, much appreciated.
tries
but as with everything, they change so much, so often it's hard to keep up
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel
5 PST
But when I startx, it locks the machine.
nvidia: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.
the kernels consider nvidia driver unsecure and flip the taint flag on
linux_probe, right, I'm not so concerned about that, but the last line about no version…
anyway, point is it locks up the laptop cold
suggestions, or something I should try?
did you setup xorg.conf ?
yum install enablerepo=atrpms nvidia-graphics9755-kmdl-`uname -r` nvidia-graphics9755
no, that installs the driver
kernel modules
Driver "nvidia"
read the page again you posted yourself
what about load "glx"
The driver line is already there…
Yeah, there is no module section…
In this file find the section labeled 'Module' and add the following line to it (if it doesn't already exist):
Load "glx"
(Where do I add load "glx" if there is no module section?)
add the module section then
ok, just a guess that I need to add somewhere in it:
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
sounds as if xorg may not have been setup right aalso
That look good?
Section "Module"
EndSection
ok
put the Load "glx" between that of course
right
ok, gonna restart X and try it out
_
how can I 'overwrite' an installation? for example I messed up some config files of mysq, so I want mysql to be re-installed, INCLUDING the default config files
no dice
locks up cold
ideas?
what else is in your xorg.conf ?
was xorg.conf setup right to start with Z?
"Z" ? I just ran a few yum installs to get X up.
Just a sec, getting X back up so I can cut and paste easily on that machine
what video chipset is that
http://rafb.net/p/0PGPGK81.html
nVidia m140
hmm, never even heard of that one
is that older or brand new
brand new… brand new Thinkpad T61
xorg.conf: http://rafb.net/p/ABjNVF96.html
you may have to get the newest driver direct from nvidia and compile then
that may be, but I found the link to that page from a site talking about the T61…
(I just assumed that meant they'd got it working)
you also have no mouse configuration in the xorg
works just fine
ohh thats right laptop has touchpad
i've always avoided laptops
yeah, somehow I don't think a field engineer is going to drag around a desktop though ;-p
lol
I wish there was an easier way to start from a bare-bones CentOS5 install and add X, without doing a bloaded groupinstall
s/bloaded/bloated
Do you think the non-3D xorg-x11-drv-nv drivers will work?
try adding under under Subsection "Display", add Modes "1280×1024"
okies
or whatever the native laptop resolution is supposed to be
1680×1050
Install core, base, and dialup. That should be all you need.
Oh lord.
that's way too bloated
I scrolled back and forgot to scroll back down. haha.
base itself is full of crap
put it under the depth 24
i don't normally work with laptops,
but thats the only thing that jumped out at me as missing
yeah, but it should still just guess something, like 1024
but I'll try it
you can add multiple modes that way also just space or tab them "1680×1050" "1280×1024"
ok, I added both.. oh, crud, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, so no lockup this time ;-p
lemme yum them back in (I was going to do the manual way)
any need to reboot after installing them?
you may have to add the BusId also
just make sure X is completely restarted
ok, hard lockup again. How do I add BusId?
(I was totally out of X when I made the edits)
BusId would look something like this under Section " Devices" by the driver "nvidia", BusID "0:5:0"
thats not the right bus id for yours though
0.0 look
(from the lspci -v, I assume?)
that should be the ID
just put it in the form above
http://rafb.net/p/0PGPGK81.html from that?
" should be
Hello, I need some help with the madwifi drivers
still a cold lockup when I startx… I'm going to try the manual way from the nvidia site's drivers
probably best hosting and maybe use their config tool
How can I configure a new profile in "system-config-network" with the atheros chipset? This seems to be impossible, I can choose only "Another Wireless devices" or "Next" and then choose some complete diffrent drivers.
you'll probably need the kernel headers and such also
no problems
vs me blindly guessing as to whats wrong and missing
I don't think it is a configuration issue so much as a driver problem.
normally a misconfiguration of X will through errors, not hard lock up the system.
yeah, the place you got the driver from are probably older
atrpms… dunno
i only been using the drivers direct from nvidia, vs playing around with others
jroysdon….a standart xorg.conf with "nvidia" as driver name doesn't help?
no, locks up
Then it should be a driver problem
when I had the system originally installed, once I'd ran updates, it would lock during boot, when it goes gui and shows the gee-wiz bootup process
(this time I wisely kept things runlevel3)
=P
IT's a AGP Card
thats why i pondered a BusId
?
he's on a laptop
Thinkpad T61 http://rafb.net/p/0PGPGK81.html
nVidia m140
ohh it;s the Go 8400m video
If the card uses the ram as video memory its often necessary to reserve minumum 128 megs of ram for the graphic card
ok… do I have the right driver then?
BIOS doesn't appear to list or allow me to change the RAM used for the card.
do you have an expert mode in your BIOS?
it doesn't list it, but it has a ton of options and sub-options, so I think it's the full-blown version.
nvidia manaul driver install is asking for "precompiled kernel interface" … is that something I can have yum install?
it looks for pre-compiled first
then if not it tries to build from source
ah, so I can just tell it to skip it and build from source?
it should auto say it can't find it
their script pretty much does everything
except hose wfb
well, it does that too
heh
failed to load module "wfb" (module does not exist)
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so is a symlink to a non-existant nvidia-graphics-1.0.9755/libwfb.so
did you remove the other package with yum first
the first package you tried ?
yup
but it left that file.. I nuked it and re-ran the nvidia manual method
looks good now, but it complains about failing to load the NVIDIA kernel module
as it says symlink pointing elsewhere
yup, so I nuked that other file and re-ran it
ah
now it was able to symlink it right
I'm going to reboot, in case the old nvidia module is still somehow is use.
woo, nice nvidia logo
downside is that I have to manually re-do it with each new kernel, right?
yes
recompile for the new kernel
what's the base stuff you need to get Desktop Effects working?
_ oh please, not blinky flashy crap
just to test the 3d (or is that even 3d?)
btw to recompile just the kernel on upgrade just add -K tot he nvidia. .run script
so you dont have to re-install the whole thing
ah ,cool, thanks!
jroysdon…look for AIGLX and Compiz, or Beryl
I have compiz, but that's it… I'll look for the rest (when I go to turn it on, it says it cannot enable it..)
it does just the kernel module then
hm?
AIGLX on entry in xorg.conf?
uhm, kinda a bare-bones xorg.conf right now
the xorg.conf is probably huge now
there is GLX in there ;-p
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "on"
EndSection
and
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
then restart X
trying it now
in the Files section you should add probably :
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
"Desktop effects could not be enabled"
i dont know if this is really necessary
xorg.conf as it is now: http://rafb.net/p/LXP46G53.html
extensions should be at the end of xorg.conf, but this shouldn't be the point
add to files
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
I have no /usr/lib64, just /usr/lib
without 64
i use a 64 Bit linux
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
this is the version for you
:-)
no nvidia in that first path
no?
(stops at extensions)
nope
hm…
does DRI working?
how do I test?
glxinfo |grep rendering
installing glx-utils now…
yes
okay fine
i'm a little bit outdated with compiz and beryl, because i don't use it
not a big deal, just want a test for the 3d/enhancement of the nvidia driver (over vesa)
perhaps you need the AIGLX extension itself or something like that
glxgears
or www.worldofpadman.com
ok, it runs…
easy to install efficient to test you card
4580FPS
good/bad?
ample
does it run smoothly?
smooth, yeah
reminds himself to never run glxgears in VNC
lmao
(this isn't a high-end nvidia, just a cheap one that came with the Thinkpad)
then it is good
if you want to try glxgears with vesa then switch in the xorg.conf to vesa and see what happens
:-)
i only get 21xx.xx to 22xx.xxFPS on my integrated 6150
ah, ok
fast enough i think
_ would say your laptop is doing good
10876 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2175.162 FPS 11114 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2222.654 FPS
my ATI X1600Pro with the fglrx had only around 1500 FPS
now i have a nvidia card
and have…lets see
around 11 000 FPS
enough i think
is the centosplus kernel good/bad over the update one?
good question, next one please ;-P
lol
*i don't know it*
nor I
that is what broke my system last time, I think, or something with it locking up the video right after the gui boot started..
at least now I'm sticking at runlevel 3
perhaps I only used the centosplus kernel for the laptop of my girlfriend because she has a marvell wlan card which needs the plus kernel
I can't notice a real difference to the standart kernel
how does a Intel Duo T7100 @1.8GHz stack up to what you all have? It reports 3590.98 bogomips
how do you measure it?
cat /proc/cpu
I just have no idea what it means, as it is a new chip to me, and 1.8GHz sounds so slow (But it is a Centrino Duo)
/proc/cpu: No such file or directory
O_o
5005.48
5000.41
5323.12
cat /proc/cpuinfo
it's cat /proc/cpuinfo
(I just tab-complete stuff and don't memorize whole paths ;-p )
bogomips : 3733.00
remember bogo = bogus mips
5319.40
just a factoring of the clock speed
bogomips : 5191.08
so a tad slow, but still, it's a laptop
it seems blazing fast though
even with lower bogomips your cpu is probably as fast as mine
lol, of course it must have it idling or something
my stupid old gateway shows bogomips of 5580
but it is a p4 2.8GHz
but it's a dog
jroysdon…if you had my cpu in your laptop it would melt away including your power supply
lol
bogomips : 3733.00 — That's on an 4-core 1.86Ghz Xeon
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ cpu MHz : 2500.021
wee overclock
yeah, I think bogomips isn't a way to accurately test
bogomips = bogus mips
Definitely not
I have a Pentium D805…….
my space heater pentium D 830 shows around 8000 bogo
lol
it's at 3.75ghz
if i overclock mine then it could be possible that i have the same results like linux_probe
3.3 Ghz wouldn't be real problem, and over 4 Ghz is possible with good water cooling…..but i don't need it
im @ 25% oc
watercooled with stock vcore
- Dual e5455 at 2.66Ghz per core.
but the FSB run out of steam
had to volt the fsb
yes
morning
if i want to archieve 3.3 Ght i don't need any overvoltage, but for more i need it
uif i want to archieve 3.3 Ght i don't need any overvoltage, but for more i need it/u
I only know the euro price of mine *lol*
that was USD not long after they came out
Hmm….i think i paid around 110$ for mine
bogomips are a false reading most of the time.
I paid $960 per proc for mine.
i assume yours is an server though
Ya. Dual quad-core xeons.
I still take a dual-core AMD over them anyday.
Can't wait for the quad-core AMD.
mines are just desktops
what in the world do you do with those machines?
Oh. I use one for my desktop too. Sorry.
Servers for things. Mysql, web.
oh, n/m ;-p
I thought about to buy a Playstation 3 and installing Linux on it….*lol*
I thought you meant they were user desktops ;-p
is still on a poor old 6600gt
poor video card
linux_proble….old but stable
I do use one for my desktop.
i dont game anyways
i could have gotten a 6200 and been happy
But I do rpm builds and such on it.
Custom kernel compiles, etc.
Plus helps when you have 2-3 vmware instances running.
I only bought my brand new 8600GT because of these extremely buggy und crappy ATI drivers
is the box noisy?
puzzled, Nope.
And Nvidia definitely rocks under Linux.
Too bad AMD bought ATI and no Nvidia.
I hear ya. Got a laptop with an X1300 and am hope that ati comes up with some relatively decent driver this century
And anyone see the 3-proc AMD motherboard?
O_o
seen 4way with 3 populated
puzzled, I hope it for you……the ATI drivers made me sick, nothing worked correctly, and as I found out that the fglrx drivers tend to deactivate themselves sometimes at certain applications i had enough
yeah saw a pic of it the other day. had some story that 3way could be faster than 4way
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=41610
Pretty interesting concept.
seems an oddball
Then it fits me perfectly.
lol
hmm @ 16gb ram via 6 slots _
they must go 4/4 2/2 2/2
Ya strange.
err doh
or maybe 4/2 4/2 2/2
which doesnt make sense for dual channel to work right
the first guess should be ok
Too bad it's only opterons.
makes me wonder why it couldn't have 24gb
Ya
must be some other chipset / mobo limiting factor
damned, there goes squid log rolling right in the middle of a page load
quite OT here, move this to -social or something
hi
in centos 4.5, how to change the default desktop gui? gnome, kde, …?
zLinux, man switchdesk
keanne, thanks
hi centos is giving error can not allocate memory! and i am not able to do any thing because of that

which repository provides fvwm? i use Scientific linux hosting - a clone of CentOS, and enabled all repositories, but can't find fvwm
can anybody give me some repositories that provide the fvwm and opera packages? thx a lot
Hi. My newly set-up server has CentOS 4.4. Which package installer is recommended for installing multiple dependency programs?
yum?
Well, it mostly works and is the default package manager, so I'd say yes.
but it isn't installed for me by default. should I install it manually?
hi,people, can anybody tell me some repositories that provide fvwm and/or opera? thx a lot
yum is definitely installed by default, unles you seriously messed with the package list on install.
nope, it's not on my system. it's a hosted virtual dedicated server.
is there a simple command that can install for me yum properly?
If your version of Centos (as delivered to you by your hosting company) does not have yum installed you'll probably want to complain to your hosting company about that.
so if i add startup commands to /etc/init.d/rc.local do they start as root or what?
Yum is a basic part of centos, and should not be removed.
It is possible to not have yum installed form the get-go, but it requires effort and incompetence.
*from
hi, I have just tried to download a torrent from a site using Azureus, when it gets part the way through it says that my disk is full yet a "df -h" shows I have over 250GB free, I have tried running "quotaoff -vaug" and that has not helped, is there anything else that I can do?
You're certain you checked the location where Azureus is downloading it?
yes, it is downloading to /home/user/downloads
and the /home partition has about 266GB free
And "df -h ~/downloads" looks fine?
shows "/dev/md0 296G 16G 266G 6% /home"
Hrm. I'm not sure then.
Do all your volumes look fine?
if someone has a website and a thief has hijacked its domain name, what to do?
zLinux, get on to the registrar and explain the situaton
Dephenom, ok, this is one thing to do
ivazquez, yes they are all fine as far as i can tell
Dephenom, what about the hijacker?
Dephenom, since they are known to the registerar who they use and moved the Domain hosting registeration to
Dephenom, are they going to be punished at least by suspending their accounts and other domain names
Dephenom, and also what about the punishment they should get for this criminal act?
Dephenom, what should i do?
how do i run a program with a full path? like by using ./hlds_run but using the full path /root/hlds/
Yeah, exactly like that.
zLinux, for taking their domains away, probably not
so /root/hlds/./hlds_run?
Why the ./
?
to run it
Not needed.
execute it
zLinux, and for punishment if you think there is a case for it you *could* go to the police
Dephenom, the hackers are in another country, they are in a middle east country
Dephenom, particularly kuwait according to the whois record
Dephenom, and some of their emails are known, they are @hotmail.com
zLinux, the only thing you can do is talk to your registrar and see if they are sympathic. other than that there is not alot you can do
Dephenom, i'm asking about the international organizations where i can contact to report the abuse
zLinux report suck
Dephenom, ok, so the registerar and ICANN.org ?
who care about hack ?
the life is hacked anyways
AlphaDOG-, haha
Guys, take that to #centos-social please.
range, ok
is it possible to run both tomcat and apache on same port?
No.
ivazquez, hi
There is an apache connector which can connect to the tomcat web hosting server, but you cannot run them on the same port, no.
Well, they could be on the same port, but not on the same port *and* address.
Hey.
range is it available through any repo?
mod_jk
thanx
Or is there a new one now?
mod_jk should be part of tomcat, IIRC.
does it support tomcat 6?
Anyway, yum provides will tell you.
Hmmm.
Has it been renamed?
It's possible.
ivazquez, could you lend me a helping hand by telling me how to yum install fvwm?
First, find a repo that has it.
The chances of THAT, well…
does dag have it?
Let's just say that there are *much* better choices these days.
Looks like it's been renamed to JK.
how do i get vncserver to run on system boot?
Read the docs.
Is there a reason you want that over nx/freenx though?
use chkconfig and configure /etc/sysconfig/vncserver …
and ivazquez is right … freenx/nx is better
and at least it does consume resources if you don't use it …
s/does/does not/
I'm running "yum search python" but I only get version 2.3.4 listed. Is something wrong with my repository files?
I'm a complete centos noob, sorry
No.
how do I get yum to install for me python 2.4.x ?
and django and other packages available on fedora ?
ivazquez, where can i find a repo contains fvwm and/or opera?
FVWM is dead. Opera you'll have to look for.
is dead? how can?
fvwm 1.24r — the Window Manager To End All Window Managers. ALL HAIL FVWM!
unfortunately, though, you'll probably have to compile hosting it yourself
ok
Try PyVault. Poke symbiont if you want it updated.
Or use CentOS 5. That has at least python 2.4.3
but what's wrong with my repo files? why won't yum find and install python 2.4.x ?
Because we do not ship 2.4.x with CentOS 4.
And it is not a good idea to just update it, because pretty much stuff from the distribution will break.
I understand, but I mean as an upgrade to the shipped version. i.e. to save me from manually installing everything.
oh
CentOS is about stability, not about always having the latest and greatest (and untested).
can I upgrade my CentOS 4.4 to 5 in place? I don't have physical access to the machine - it is a hosted dedicated virtual server on mediatemple.
on how it generally would work, but …
No, the kernel updates would probably break your system.
probably is a "better" solution - you don't have a real CentOS system anyway
But if you have any problems afterwards, you should ask them, not us …
still, what do I do if my packages require python 2.4? can I install it side by side?
Yes, you could install python 2.4 into /opt/
good, now why can't yum handle this for me?
That's a setting you could use at compile time.
Because there is no repository offering that …
what would I be risking if I used a Fedora repository?
Besides complete system failure?
That it won't install because of dependencies.
yes, besides that
I'm upset with the small number of packages (not necessarily pythonic) available through yum by default. are there other tools which have larger/differnt repositories?
http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories
[angenenr@shutdown ~]$yum list all | wc -l
7554
That's 7554 different packages for CentOS 5.
is JMicron® JMB363 PATA and SATA controller supported by C4.5 ?
ok i cannot get vncserver to start at boot
configured the /etc/sysconfig/vncservers and then did chkconfig –level 5 vncserver on
yes, its stock ahci stuff
it's not the same beast as JMicron 20360/20363 ? ’cause - at least in C5 - I could not make it work
the 363 is just an ahci interface, you dont need to do much to make it work
anyway, i gota run now. bbl
thank you
and yet it seems like being the same chip which did not work for me
and yet it seems like being the same chip which did not work for me
"/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libapm.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start
sounds fun
hope you've got a root login
it's a kind of magic magic maaagic
if you do try an emerge -1 pam
yes
hi folks. i have some trouble running nfs server. after few hours of working i always get a "lockd: server xx.xx.xx.xx not responding, timed out". anyone here has a hint what's going wrong there?
any ideas how to fix that TFKyle ?
as I said, try an emerge -1 pam and see if that helps
I had a kde package fail to emerge. however I did not write down
what the last one it did was.
how can I tell what the last emerge error was?
thanks, trying that now
yay X11 works
bobber205, look at /var/log/emerge.log
ah thanks
lopete is what failed where is its log?
*kopete
TFKyle, nope - no luck. How do I force it to rebuild that library??
libapm.so
Zartev, run a revdep-rebuild first
revdep-rebuild -vp
it has 3, libapm.so, libapm.so.1 and libapm.so.1.0.0
more might be broken
remerging pam should rebuild libpam
ok, doing a revdep again
hi! does anyone know when bmpx 0.40.2 will be in portage?
did revdep-rebuild and now trying emerge -1 pam again
what does the -1 do please?
oneshot
its not recording in world file this package
but what does that mean exactly?
tells portage not to record it in your world file if it isn't already
–skipfirst ftw!
Why is there a .ssh folder in /etc/skel? this folder does not have the right attributes for a user to add known hosts in the own home direcroty
hey everyone… has emerge behavior changed? all of a sudden emerge -uDN world pulls in fewer and different packages than emerge -u world!?
I have a question about kernel modules.
flithm, and that is surprising why?
How can I find out where a particular module is enabled in menuconfig?
nope - still no go
Nicias, zcat /proc/config.gz
for the running kernel
Nicias, you can search in menuconfig by typing /
libapm is still broken
renihs that searches for the CONFIG_FOO_BAR name.
not for the foobar.o name.
rephrase your intention then
In full detail.
I have a working kernel.
from kubuntu
you want to get the config?
I have that.
my system is broken pretty bad, i can't even complete a revdep-rebuild, what do you suggest?
the problem is it is an initrd style kernel.
so it has some things as modules that would need to be in the kernel.
if I wanted to use it without an initrd.
paste the error from revdep-rebuild
on www.rafb.net that is
put it into /usr/src/linux and build the stuff in you want?
so how do I find out which m's to change to *
renihs.
I don't know what the stuff I want is.
that is what my question is.
oh
:p
I know what modules I want.
modinfo -l
modinfo path-to-module
shows you description, with that you can search
i have to type it… it's with pango…. hold on
i shouldn't have done a stage 3 i feel that is why my system is broken, lol
stage 3 is the only stage that is recommended
how do I rebuild a libapm libary? revdep-rebuild and emerge -1 pam did not work
bassinboy, paste your revdep-rebuild error output
sit ok, :p you can always redo a stage one now
revdep-rebuild wants to rebuild because of libexpat, right?
yes
it's your lucky day
mzbot, teach bassinboy expat
expat-2.0.1 is not ABI compatible with earlier versions. Run the following in bash to fix: "emerge -n1 '=portage-2.1.2.12' portage-utils && emerge -qep world | grep –color=never -oFf (scanelf -plRBF '%F %n' | awk '/libexpat.so.0/{print $1}' | xargs qfile -qC | sort -u; echo -e "libtool\ncurl") | xargs emerge -1". If a specific package fails, "/msg mzbot remerge-deep" for advice (gtk+/pango are common offenders).
thanks!
renihs, I'm don't think that modinfo gives me what I need.
tss, i just symlinked the old lib to the new one, rebuilt pango, then removed the symlink and it was all fine
Nicias, sure it does
that's a nono for the long term
which modules you want to builtin?
name them
well then i rebuilt pango again, and it worked, so
(without the symlinked lib)
because something in the pango package doesn't care about the change made by revdep-rebuild and tries to use the old lib anyway
I don't know yet, becuase I don't know which ones I need because I don't know what they do.
because I can't find them in the kernel config
hi, I'd like to specify specific mount points for my dvd drives within fstab so that the different drives always mount to the same folder respective to the drive, but doing this means that only root can mount them and it breaks my nice automounting which I had with hal
any suggestions?
say sony_acpi
Nicias, you basicly need to have the stuff for your disk builtin
so it can mount /
then it can access the modules in userspace and load the stuff it requires
Yes, I know.
sony_acpi you dont need for sure :p
but i tried the obvious things and got kernel panics.
Hello, I've got a prob with grub can some1 help me.. it worked fine till today. Now it only shows 'GRUB' and a blinking cursor and nothing else after I pressed F2 (missed the BIOS post :/)… how can I get it working again?
filesystem / ide/sata/whatever chipset is a good start
but why not create a new kernel?
doesn't fstab user option work?
that was my first try
good learning process, then you also know what you need
takes some time to bake the first "working" kernel
thats normal :p
I've done it before on different hardware.
image.gz but it just seems so slow - and its getting slower im not sure this is ever going to finish - any ideas whats wrong?
I don't mean to sound impatient, but I have been working on this for a while
og01, you might wanna increase blocksize (bs)
I've googled and used various wiki articles as starting points for my config.
and I keep getting kernel panics.
what panic message?
i've tried selecting large bs
mom.
og01, also check dmesg|tail might be bad sectors
can I set something in fstab for the group plugdev?
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-576951-highlight-.html?sid=67607525f85d77e8dd9b9e84ffdef9fe
Nicias, but basicly if you builtin everything loaded on the working kernel you should be settled
ugly but working
og01, check your cpu usage
I tried that
but it's a kubuntu kernel
so it includes everything under the sun as a module.
will do
still got the pango error, lol
it still gives me a kernel panic.
og01, gzip can be a bit heavy, try the –fast option, will give you a larger image though
but with so much debugging information I can't see what is going on.
It started ok as a reasonable rate its getting to about 4BG in size and its practically crawlling to a halt
so now I just want to build in everything for the modules it actually loads.
see?
I mean user, nouser option. The user option allow normal user to mount the device
Nicias, put in all sata/ide stuff
and filesystem
jut grab the whole list
I tried putting in all the sata stuff and filesystem. no love.
hmm
where did you syslink it from?
yeah.
sounds strange, if you paste me you loaded modules from working kernel i should be able to pinpoint your target
did you put the mzbot command in exactly
want me to put it up someplace?
?
Nicias, just boot it and paste me output of lsmod
like pastebin?
ya
mzbot, teach Nicias paste
Use http://rafb.net/paste or emerge wgetpaste. Pasting in #gentoo itself clutters the chat and will get you kicked by Naamah. Use the aforementioned site and hand us the URL so we can check it out.
I'm running kubuntu on it now.
i put it in a shell file and ran it from there
so it did all the packages up to pango and then failed?
yes
How can I see how many files are in a folder and it's subfolders total?
-type f | wc
find ….. what Nicias said
thou wc -l
Nicias, you need generic scsi, ata_piix, ata_generic (dunno whats that called) and ext3
pango failing to compile because of expat
been at it half a day now
that should be it, generic scsi you might have ommited
you don't revdep-rebuild ?
revdep-rebuild complaining
ok, renihs, I'll try that, but I don't think it will work
done even
whats it complaining about ??
deleting stuff all over
the usual, "can't find blah blah for app blah-1.2.3"
takes half an hour every time
Nicias, lshw and lspci might help you too
going to get back on at work
lshw?
way more verbose
you mean can't find ebuild for package blah-1.2.3
knows alot stuff :p
ye that's the one, i guess
look at the topic, mzbot knows something about that
yeah I noticed.
emerge -e pango may work
k, run revdep rebuild, wait for it to bail out and it'll give you the emerge line
Nicias, paste your .config somewhere maybe
yes, that's why i've been at it half a day already
then you take that emerge command, edit out the packages that its complaining about and fire it off
revdep-rebuild takes 15 years
I've used several different ones.
edit out where?
from world?
you want the kubuntu one I'm working with now?
of course it's breaking on gnome/gtk stuff
Nicias, the one you use now
Hi, how can I tell webapp-config not to install anything by default?
is there a cli way to convert a file from utf8 to ascii?
yes but i forgot the name from the converter thingie
iconv -fascii -tutf8
ah :p
ok.
I'll put it up.
with the changes you suggested.
ln -s /usr/lib/libexpat.so.1 /usr/lib/libexpat.so.0 — i think that's it
Wait, the -f and -t should be the other way around.
notice however that you shouldn't keep it that way later on, just make sure it rebuilds pango, then you should remove the symlink and continue the rebuild
iconv: illegal input sequence at position 0
Manually symlinking dynamic libraries is bound to cause segfaults.
then rebuild pango using emerge x11-libs/pango, to prevent what intgr just said
Does it work if you add the -s flag
having fun with macs now
that's why i wrote "you shouldn't keep it that way later on", it's an ugly way of doing it but it works
building now.
Yeah.
Note that you will lose *all* accented characters when converting to ASCII.
If that's not what you want then you were probably looking for the iso-8859-1 character set instead.
pango breaking on expat here too
Which will convert cleanly if it's the correct one.
what's using pango in the first place?
ideally everything should error if it finds a character that can't be represented in the other encoding imo
gtk+gtk apps
figures
But sometimes you just don't care about accents when converting manually.
Nicias, you have quite some stuff as m
ide-generic for example
I got it
thanks
pango++
NP
thats the kubuntu config.
Nicias, sata or ide disk? ..i wanted your config :p
I don't have a config.
sata.
s/config/working config.
error 1: unrecognized device string" … how do i fix that?
there shouldn't be a space after the "," afaik
aaah, i will try that. thank you
np
Nicias, hmm rewriting that config would be too much work, hmm is that box accessible? i could login and make a quick kernel if you want
hmm.
lemme see.
don't know if kubuntu gives you sshd.
appears I might be behind a firewall here at work.
lemme try wireless.
brb
but *why* does revdep-rebuild keep whining about missing ebuilds
so i can't update world and i can't revdep-rebuild
it tries to emerge the exact version
i believe there is an option that ignores the exact version
run revdep-rebuild with the -X parameter so it ignores the exact versions
Just note the package names and re-emerge them manually
I never trust revdep-rebuild to emerge packages for me.
it shows them one at a time
so that's half an hour per try
It displays the entire emerge command line.
Before actually invoking emerge
hmm
And if you use –pretend, it'll pass that on to emerge.
k
So anyway, can I avoid webapp-config from installing new webapps after emerge by default?
intgr, tbh i never figured the webapp …out
its *really* strange :p
Yeah, never did I, and I think the distro should get the hell out of my way if I don't need it.
when i try to boot gentoo, it says "cannot open /dev/sda3, please provide a correct root= option" .. im pretty sure that /dev/sda3 is my /boot… any ideas?
err, neither did I
i believe if you set the "vhosts" useflag for your webapp, it won't be installed to your webroot by default
but i'm not perfectly sure
not gentoo specific, but.. Can one read one line from a text fil, find a specific string and remove it and store the remaining line somehow?
Are you sure that you've built your harddisk controller into the kernel?
It'll install under localhost then.
oh.. well, it has been over a year since i last installed webapps via emerge, might have been different then
Use 'lshw' from the liveCD to see which driver it's using for your hard disk controller.
sorry I appear to be behind a firewall.
i dont have the livecd, but i have the minimal install cd
maybe i should get the livecd
Doesn't make a difference, it'll run off the installcd as well.
renihs, no luck I can't ssh in from somewhere else.
hmm, okay. do i have to mount everything and chroot again in order to use it? it doesnt seem to be installed by default
Yeah, mount everything again.
And mount /sys as well.
hmm, okay
hmm, tbh i would suggest to wipe off that config and start from scratch or use genkernel (but i dont wanna advise that)
I tried genkernel, no love.
ya its junky
so .. anyone cares to help me with my lil' bind problem ?
make sure you get scsi_generic compiled in, all sata stuff you are not sure about and ext3
that *should* do the trick
Nicias, you can't force love !
I'll try, but I think I've already tried that
mammals learn from mistakes only :p
how do i mount /sys?
JUst like proc. mount sys -t sys /mnt/gentoo/sys
isnt it sysfs?
I have an AMD Turion64-X2 Processor .. one core is running at 1600MHz, the other at 800MHz. Is that the normal state??
lol
hmm that does not work
no
mount -t sysfs sysfs /sys
/mnt/gentoo/sys that is
goth, that actually cannot be
shouldnt be possible in my understading
are you reading from /proc/cpuinfo?
powernow-k8: 0 : fid 0×8 (1600 MHz), vid 0×13
powernow-k8: 1 : fid 0×0 (800 MHz), vid 0×1e
from dmesg
I'll check cpuinfo..
both at 1600 in /proc/cpuinfo
hm
hmmm goth strange
that info shouldnt mismatch (kernel ring/proc)
dunno, never seen
there is a SATA controller that uses driver=ahci… could that be what i need in my kernel?
that doesn't refer to the cores, that is just an enumeration of power states your cpu supports
ok .. I think I got it .. windows .. ( like in .. the opposite of linux ) has the bad ideea to add an extension after my fake zone .. as "Server" isn't a fully qualified name .. anyone knows how could I do named to rewrite those extensions or disable them ?
my lin box can "ping server" .. the win box can't ! .. both of us can ping ns.server .. so there's something with the win box
yo
anyone knows a reliable smart status reader - smartmontools just told me health test passed a few seconds before the hd died
BlackBishop, afaik icmp echo reply/request are dropped per default on win-firewall?
I don't bother with the summary, I go for the actual numbers themselves
Just moved up to kernel 2.6.23-rc2-mm1 and when I do module-rebuild -X rebuild I get http://rafb.net/p/Yk2Op891.html
the actual frequency can be seen in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu[01]/cpufreq
Yeah, that's it.
renihs, nope .. it's not that .. he can ping ns.server .. he can ping any host .. the only problem is that he can't resolve "Server" because win adds some extensions
chithead, ya but they should be same speed…shouldnt they?
hi , did anyone try kuroo
Just a hint, you can use the search function in menuconfig to indicate where it's located.
:/
any hints for backup from a borked disk ?
Anyone who's not a fan of webapp-config, please vote on this bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189929
as I previously wrote, the dmesg info is only an enumeration of possible power states
can you still access it?
its booting up, but then i start getting io errors
ah ok, didnt see that
i just got myself a 2.5" hd adapter
dd it, with conv=noerror
or try to
and dont adjust the blocksize (leave at 512) or it will append zeros for the bs you specified once it can read
it cant read
thanks a lot, i hope it helps
hmm - i dont have tha much of free disk space
r0nny, you can pipe it through a gzip
thx
and i have tonns of kinda useless data wich is easy to gett on the disk
there are a few gb videos/mp3's i can easyly get again
then copy off the stuff which is needed while you still can (booting from livecd/other disk)
i just fired up my other pc and prepared to get the data via usb
(from a disk adapter)
i assume :p
if i update grub.conf, is there anything in particular i have to do for it to be updated_
and avoid writing anything to the disk until the important data is saved. (that includes fsck)
plain, no it gets red by grub on boot
sure
oh darn - my other system is hopelessyl outttdated
2.6.20? I would like to have a look at the kernel-config. with kernel 2.6.22 firehol 1.256 fails at startup.
na i tend to write my own firewall scripts
all i found so far where confusing, bloathed, hard to read :p
Hello all! I have a problem with sound. I compiled kernel with my sound cart support, and XFCE shows it. But when i try to play something with mplayer, there is no sound How can i solve it?
what do you mean?
firehol is a bash script i assume
you mean firehol configs?
no
sure it is
ah it generates
http://firehol.sourceforge.net/
ya i verwechselt it
anyone got bcm4318 working with ndiswrapper on x86_64?
mplayer plays something but you can't hear it, or it refuses to play? in the former case, check whether channels are muted in alsamixer, in the latter check your use flags
it is a bit more advanced than a dumb shell script
erm
lol
iptables script will be a bash script
it generates
just a ruleset
yes, mplayer plays something, but i can't hear it. Thanks, i'l check the channels in alsamixer.
well, i know .. I mean how to map your network environment
)(*$%(#^% still pango causing revdep to bail out
gtk mess
-X no help
dunno, run the iptables rulesset it generates in debug mode maybe
i think there where some netfilter changes in 2.6.20
got cairo with glitz ? a friend of mine had some unresolved symbols there wich made everything fail
there are …
layer 3 independence
and where can i find alsamixer? i need to install it?
ya
but that shouldnt affect, since most hooks remained where they are …i think
it resulted in pango without cairo support wich made gtk fail
expat causing it
trying to get rid of gtk mess now
media-sound/alsa-utils
but no clue, not using firehol :p
his problems where cause of the expat update
as i already mentioned I have a modules problem
same here
It looks like that firehol isnt prepared to use the new modules introduced with 2.6.20
hmm, I remembered using firehole successfully with 2.6
and, I think you need to compile hosting every modules for iptable
but it's been years.
kio, I already did this
Is there a way to set per user quota on certain directory? (I have more directories writable by users, but there is one which I want to set quota on)
hmm, in grub there is a parameter root=something… should root point to / or /boot?
sure, use XFS. it's a native feature.
http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/training/xfs_slides_08_quotas.pdf
ehrm, m0t3jl.
:-)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.22 root=/dev/sda3 … sda3 is my / … should this point to /boot rather than / ?
is there a difference between ext3 and xfs which could make the switch difficult?
in grub.conf
I am using sw raid now, is it ok to use with xfs?
babalu, the root (hdx,x) is boot in grub.conf
the root= line should point to /
in the kernel line
hmm
m0t3jl, there are HUGE differences between ext3 and xfs…but not from a files viewpoint
linux had to be ported to xfs :p
not xfs to linux based hosting services :p
stupid joke
when i emerge gentoo-sources … how can i checkout gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r6 ?
cuze know it checkout gentoo-2.6.22
whazilla, emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r6
you need to specify exactly
that is ok, but be aware that sw raid on linux does not support write barriers. that means you will get file system meta data corruption with _any_ file system you use on power faulires, unless you disabled write cache on each and every drive with hdparm, or you have a controller with battery backed cache or an UPS.
and lateron if i wanne try latest again ?
narf
m0t3jl:
oh… it does point to / … something else is wrong then… bleh
Hey guys, the 2007 live cd does not boot up on a 128MB machine throwing "no space left on device" while in the tmpfs stage.
sorry.
Any power KDE users here?
its becuz ahci for my hdd is only supported upto r20
babalu, maybe you are missing controller chipset or filesystem
whazilla, that sounds unlikely?
hmm
I have an APC UPS connected to that server
What is a "power user" anyway?
Raeth, power user?
user with power
thats not a group :p
yes, it looks like it. i will add more controllers.. i have ext2 and ext3 in the kernel..
Advanced Users == Power Users
errr.. what is "advanced"?
Aah
it's supported on RAID 1 I believe.
Then no problem, XFS will automatically read some params from the sw raid device and set correct stripe alignment. That means you will be able to write faster with XFS on sw raid than with any other FS.
dekela, ask your question.
at least if whay you have is a parity based raid level, like raid 5 or 6.
dekela, thats windows terminology maybe but not gentoo
The reason I am asking is that I need to know if there is a way to channel all my system audio directly through ALSA rather then using ARTS
I think ARTS is the worse thing ever
barriers are support on raid1?
in alsamixer only Headphones, Tone, and 3D Contr are disabled
that would be great.
yes, I think so.
I'll check that
Yeah, Power Users are usually in reference to Windows users who have used Windows for so long they know how to work through the finnicks and oddments
Sorry for the "contamination" of the forum with "Windowz Terminology"
i can link u to the doc saying so … i just tried a latter kernel 22 and it dont have those kernel options anymore
whazilla, i believe you, but thats bad :p
but maybe they got integrated elsewhere
:p
renihs, i'm done compiling that monstrosoity of a kubuntu kernel, plus those options.
www.suprnova.org is back!!
MM=muted OO=unmuted. so master and pcm are both unmuted?
i'm gonna give it a chance.
The guide does say 128MB, but it is ending up with a kernel panic
http://gentoo-wiki.com/Asus_A8V-XE_Socket_939_Motherboard renihs
I did not get your last command? what did you mean by that?
… I am using raid1 (2 same disks mirrored)
im just busy chrooting into image from livecd to make a new livecd
master and PCM both have 100%
100% doesn't matter if they are muted
On parity based raid levels (5,6) (not raid 0, not raid 1, nor raid 10) using XFS with stripe alignment will give you a boost in write performance, but as you have raid 1 it doesn't give anything.
so renihs what would be my best bet ? reconfigure newer kenerl and have todo it all over again if it dont work ?
or take the older kernel ?
chithead:but a don't see mute options there
you see any MM below the bars?
that pango )(*$% keeps breaking stuff
renihs no love again.
below the volume bar, it should either say "MM" or "OO" depending on whether the channels are muted or not
additional as kerframil says, barriers are supported on raid1, so you should be fine in any case. just check dmesg after a mount, XFS will tell you if it can use barriers or not.
I will try that, looks nice
my / will still be on ext3, but /home and /var/lib/samba will be on xfs and we'll see
yes, I've just found a few posts that seem to confirm it (one on the ext3 list, and another on the postgres list). users of other "personalities" are out of luck though
a, i understood There are OO's below the volume bars.
renihs, is that offer to try and make a config for me still open?
Hi all, I just updated my kernel to 2.6.23-rc2-mm1 in order to get my sound working, yet when I try to module-rebuild -X rebuild to get nvidia drivers working again, i get this http://rafb.net/p/Yk2Op891.html
great, if just LVM could adopt it as well :/
well then you should be able to hear something. do other applications such as aplay produce sound?
^^
1 minute, I install aplay
comes with alsa-utils
PercocetPenguin, AFAIK you need a patch
still trying to figure out what is pulling in that broken pango thing
where is the best web hosting place for some assisted install?
I'm buggered when trying to emerge grub
You can get help here. Please state your problem in as much detail as possible
complains about my ARCH location and tells me the make.profile does not point correctly
is the problem with LVM confied to operations using the user-space tools (i.e. lvcreate, lvremote etc)?
confined, I mean
ok I've just rebooted, I want to install without reformatting, though dont know where the makeoptions.xml would have been saved..
With /usr/portage/packages, if I remove the symlink "directories" and replace them with "proper" directories, will the binary packages get put in the correct directory, or will they still all be shoved in "All"?
AllenJB, as long as you only move the sysmlink or make a nu one the binaries should not move etall
no, LVM foks say it not possible to implement barriers, because of device mapper performance problems.
t3h suck
how about putting your binaries ina a directory named All
I was referring to newly created binary packages
apparently, dm-crypt supports it though.
when i build a kernel+initramfs with genkernel, to be booted on a host that has md root filesystem, do i have to build md and friends into the kernel? genkernel doesn't seem to include them in the initramfs by default
I don't want them all in the "All" directory - that's the point
ahh
hm
hard for me to comment there, if a symlink points to somewhere other than all, when copying to that link the files 'flow' toward the different pointer
I symlinked it /usr/portage/packages/All with no problems
I don't want the package all in "All", that's the point. I want them divided up by categories.
sure
you can re-define PKGDIR (/usr/portage/packages), but the structure is hard-coded as far as I'm aware.
anyone here familiar with configuring and running net-im/openfire (or know of a good howto/wiki guide for doing so in gentoo)?
emerge openfire && /etc/init.d/openfire start fails to start and there seem to be no config files and nothing in the logs at all (although the start script reports successful start).
did you etc-update?
it was a new install, so nothing to update with etc-update.
hi..
equery files openfile - that should tell you what files are installed for this package, see which one is config file
uh openfire
are you using XFS?
Well, there's /etc/conf.d/openfire but the defaults look fine there. None others in the package. I've read that much of the configuration is done in a web-app interface, but if the software won't start, then I obviously can't get to that…
I have 2 IDE device, cdrw and dvdrw and I have SATA harddisk. I'm trying to get IDE device work under 2.18.23-rc3 but it doesn't work,
pretty much everything seems to be needing this nonexisting libexpat.so.0 :/
I guess the question is: Does portage (and related binary package utilities) see the structure of PKGDIR as "/All/package-file" or "/category/package-file"
and there is no error or message in dmesg output
reinstall would have been quicker
run it on "no daemon" mode maybe? there should be option for that for debugging purposes
any idea how to do that for openfire?
the former. I know that the symlinks are not necessary for the package tarballs to be used.
Aww, that sucks
Not to mention, what does portage do if that's 2 packages with the same name and same version in different categories? Only allow you to binary package 1 at a time?
s/that's/there's/
I think the symlinks are just for convenience. By all means, double-check this assertion though.
I've not considered the matter so deeply.
did i miss anything?
hey there
anybody recommend me a good VPS that supports gentoo?
If you want 95% uptime, no.
bah
Cheap VPSes generally have dubious connectivity and stability as far as I've heard.
VPS == Video Programming Signal ?
in that case to avoid confusion, emerge category/package
Hiho… I am trying to do a five OS laptop…. and I would like some advice Is 4 GB too much overkill for a swap partition? (I have 2 GB ddr2 ram..)
is there a memory editor like tsearch equivalent for linux?
definitely
what does that do?
1GB swap should be plenty, for laptop work …
indee
indeed*
you can change values for memory locations
if you want to suspend-to-disk, you'd better have at least as much swap as ram
hacking HD-DVD?
How do I create the Makefile in the kernel source directory. emerge –depclean deleted it yesterday.
dd
I always used artmoney… once there was a couple of rumors about a linux edition.. that didn't happen though, as far as I know
eeyore-: naw, just playing with flashplayer
/dev/kmem
m0r0n, the Makefile?
It s gone
Well I was just following the old "SWAP = 2 * Ram"
Maybe just the .config file?
Oh, depclean
Never mind
eeyore-: looking for a clean interface like tsearch
erm is it possible to use 486 with glibc-2.6?
I am going to be doing some heavy work on this laptop… video editing and 3d development
I want to recompile x11-drm-20070314 * Found kernel source directory: * /usr/src/linux * Could not find a Makefile in the kernel source directory. !!! ERROR: x11-base/x11-drm-20070314 failed.
glibc-2.5?
eeyore-: you can search for memory locations containing a certain value or range, then watch those and do subsequent searches on the results to narrow down on a specific field
Well, there's gdb.
don't know of one, but there's always gdb
hehe
yeah to lazy for that though
Is it possible to fetch linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r8 again?
Of course.
emerge \=linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r8
does anybody know if genkernel is currently broken?
Err
run the app, gdb, dump the memory
is there any good partitioning program for moving partitions? gparted just say the new location is the same as the old and do nothing when I accctualy tries to to move it about 40GiB.
So I only need 2 GB for my swap partition or what? Even with all my 3d development and other heavy tasks?
emerge \=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r8
how much normal memory do you have?
2GB
oh
intgr, thanks
do anything from 2gb-4gb for swap, but yeah, I sugges 2Gb
You won't *need* any swap to operate on 2GB with sane workloads.
The kernel won't find over 512M of stuff to push out of physical RAM anyway.
Diabolic_Cookie, can always add a swapfile later if needed
2GB RAM + 2GB swap, for laptop? you're joking
eeyore-: nope
eeyore-: actually, I think that's what's on this laptop
And what does 'free -m' have to say?
I don't do many heavy tasks anymore
/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches")
My friend told me today that with enough ram you don't really need swap.. But I have always stretched even my current 1 GB +256 MB config
anyone minds taking a look at a cryptic genkernel failure? http://pastebin.ca/667981
eeyore-: That's stupid; page cache is there to speed things up.
don't use genkernel
I think I should go with 3 GB then… I have a 160 GB harddrive, what do you think?
It'll only push really unnecessary stuff out to swap on a 2GB machine.
given that it's a valid handbook option, it should work
the only "error" is the kernel start address. this was recently enforced in header file to be multiples of 2GB while the default starts at first 1GB
so, go into menuconfig and change the start address to be 2GB
uh, no, 2MB - M, not G
It's a waste of perfectly good HD space. If you ever use that much swap, you'll wish you hadn't enabled swap in the first place since your machine will simply slow to a crawl at that point.
where would that be?
it all depends on what you do
How do you go about mounting a DVD? When I go about mounting it the same way I would a CD, I get: 'unknown file system 'udf''
so 2 GB then? That will enable the sleeping mode
You don't have the UDF file system built into the kernel.
what does cpudetection in mplayer do?
for me, i use that on my mythtv box because otherwise the PAGE CACHE itself is stupid … why cache something i already watched? i'm not in the habit to go BACK often, so page cache is stupid in that regards, not me. why pile up megabytes and megabytes of old frames when i can use memory for something else (and yes, it does swap)
Oh, I totally forgot about hibernation.
damn im stuck
livecd livecd # mksquashfs /mnt/stick8gb/image.copy image.squashfs
mksquashfs: command not found
suspend to disk yes…
eeyore-: The pagecache also contains all libraries and binaries, config files, etc.
eeyore-, well you could set the swappiness variable
what package is mksquashfs part of ?
hey, what in kernel 2.6.22 do i have to enable to be able to boot from sata? :/
tried everything soon :/
and sounds like alot of people have problem with it
did i somehow say "you must drop the page cache all the time"? the "echo" does a drop-on-demand …
You have to figure out which particular SATA controller you've got. Use lshw to find out.
Are you interested in my setup?
Win XP Pro, Gentoo/Sabayon, Ubuntu, Mac OS Leopard, BackTrack2. It's going to be sweeeet
sorted. Cheers intgr
Hi, I have a GA-N680SLI-DQ6 and for my network driver I need the sky2 one. So i've selected it in the kernel, made the bzimage and copied it into boot, after rebooting, no network device
eeyore-: And it'll just re-use all the RAM that you cleared up for new pages to cache.
easiest is to compile in the driver, otherwise edit the genkernel config file to include that in the initrd
sure, but meanwhile, i can run firefox or game snappily!
eeyore-: Oh, you mean they don't run snappily without drop_caches?
well, after i just watched a movie or two, the cache is filled up and it starts to hit swap … then launch firefox? grrrrr….swap…grrrr….swap…
eeyore-, I can't find this kernel start address
u here
screen redraw is painfully slow … swap … swap …
eeyore-: That's odd.
in menuconfig, use the "/" key to look for START
Hi, I have a GA-N680SLI-DQ6 and for my network driver I need the sky2 one. So i've selected it in the kernel, made the bzimage and copied it into boot, after rebooting, no network device I've read about some guys having the same problem with this mobo
It should just drop unused page cache pages.
wow, didn't know it existed
2GB for swap that is… okay CHECK. I have another question for your amusement… Ext3, JFS2, ReiserFS or whateve. I need help with this, don't know much about the different file systems.
hmm, this whole section is DISABLED for me
i guess it wants to hold on "just a little bit longer" … our sims here run into that too … yes, everybody says "it should drop unused page cache" but i think there's a little thing in there somewhere that wants to hold on to them just a little longer, just in case
oh sorry
there are too
ext3 if you want to be completely safe; reiserfs shouldn't give you any problems either, but people seem to be more wary of it.
("we") = chip designers doing design verification, sucks up a bunch of memory and stuff doing corner cases
humm … and then ? .. all i find is the harddisk in that, not the controller?
could you tell me about the main differences? I didn't learn much from wikipedia, I was just out of my head
/0/1/0.0.0 /dev/sda disk 74GB Hitachi HTS54168
is all i get
eeyore-: Does swappiness at least improve it?
It should display the controller driver name somewhere above the hard disk entries.
will have to see what RHEL3 does to solve this "once you hit swap you're screwed", unfortunately we can't upgrade our farm from RHEL3 :-p
eeyore-, thanks, solved my problem so this is a genkernel bug I'ld say…
not that i can find
reiserfs is more space efficient and generally considered better performing.
untill you have to fsck it.
When you type 'mount', does it show /sys as mounted?
so why do ppl stick with ext3 then… ? because of backwards compatibility?
sysfs as /sys yes
no, the *default* for a long time has been 1MB but now that it's *enforced* on x86_64 … i wouldn't blame it on genkernel
this is not an issue on x86
Fragmentation is *very* hard to measure, but the consensus seems to be that it also fragments more.
heh heh, isn't THAT always the case? (reiserfsck always fsck up)
ext3 has the best reliability record as well as the best fsck in case something does fuck up.
language, and you better have some statistics to back that up …
2.0 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller (rev
well, ubuntu is debian based, backtrack is based on slackware, and they all support ext3.. I think I'll do better by just going with it until I have more experience thx for the help
from lspci
intgr:
what, intense dislike for reiser because reiserfsck burned you once, just when you really needed it … that's not enough?
reiserfs had several bad corruption issues back in the 2.4 days.
if you're telling me i should forgive something because, just when i really needed the "fix" tool to fix something, it dumps core on me … i don't think so
Although I don't think there are any these days.
eeyore-: well, ext3 self-destructed on a pristine system once, so I have a very strong dislike
so did ext3
Locale.setDefault(new Locale(ClientSettings.USER_LANGUAGE,
eeyore-: well, that's what happened to you, I had the exact opposite happen, so who's more right?
oops
what do you know about JFS2?
whoever has the +o
Forget JFS, very few people use it, so it's very likely to have undetected regressions.
thx
Well, not "very", but more likely anyway.
Could be.
all i want for my christmas besides my two front teeth and a hippopotamus is a filesystem that does snapshotting, reliably
I burned my last hdd.. I am currently working entirely on a livecd
(besides netapp i mean)
Look for a line that looks like "configuration: driver=sata_nv latency=0 maxlatency=1 mingnt=3 module=sata_nv"
in what?
Use smartmontools and smartd to predict failures in the future.
in lshw output
does that work reliably with SATA now? (last i checked the SATA layer didn't pass the command on through)
eeyore-: nah, we can agree to disagree
jfs is pretty stable. I don't know of any regressions lately
Under one of the 'ide' entries.
thx.. I shall write that down
eeyore-: Yeah, the libata SMART patches were merged an eon ago, in 2.6.17 or something.
ok, i could use some tips about this pango/libexpat mess
wasted way too much time
How else do I enable direct rendering? I ve reemerged x11-base/x11-drm, media-libs/mesa and entered eselect opengl set xorg-x11. glxinfo still prints direct rendering: No
ldconfig -v shows libexpat.so.0
ansiversion=5"
it all depends a) on your usage and b) on what recovery tools are acceptable
Sorry GTG
chip?
eeyore-, ati radeon 9000 mobility
any hints for me about making this 5 OS laptop?
"radeon" driver or "fglrx" driver?
radeon
did you load "radeon" kernel module and "drm" kernel module?
/etc/make.conf, VIDEO_CARDS="radeon", emerge x11-drm ?
well…not all of the partitions will be able to be Primary ones
to use a joystick should i enable any feature on kernel ?
I am goint to use GRUB boot loader I think
yes, there is a joystick driver under input devices
some will have to be Logical/Extended
lsmod | grep fglrx - 0utput should be empty, lsmod | egrep (radeon|drm) - should have some output
eeyore-, yes, the variable is set VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"
Anyone here know a trick of how to get a script to run after a screensaver stops saving the screen?
not sure what you mean
Boohbah, hmm i can just compile the module and run it, without modify my actual kernel, right?
yes that should work
eeyore-, it worked until I updated my complete system yesterday
the handbook should tell you
Boohbah, ty
don't need to know that, just need to know the answers to the questions i asked
I gave you the answer
mzbot, gentoo eeyore- ati
no you did not … "did you load the 'radeon' kernel module"?
okay… I was just about to do some reading on GRUB… do you know any other good bootloaders? acronis OS selector costs money
mzbot, gentoo eeyore ati
answer - "it used to work", well, whoopee, it sure as heck isn't working now :-p
nothing found
eeyore-: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml
order of installation will be important if you intend to put Windows
radeon 120928 2 drm 117424 3 radeon
grub or lilo are the two standard linux bootloaders (can load other OSs as well obviously)
I know.. but not sure which to install first… I also read that you should be careful when installing a boot loader… It should be installed a certain place for minimum damage to a harddrive
i try to generate a filesystem with mkfs.vfat but it claims mkfs.vfat would not exist. whats wrong?
emerge mkfs ?
but hopefully the installation order will be explained in the manual.. or could you just tell me
Windows will always install a bootloader and overwrite the existing one when installed
aparently its the Silicon Image SATA driver
how wierd is taht
that
found a gentoo page about it
I believe you need dosfstools
So installing windows first and then grub is an option?
(as in the package, to clarify )
AllenJB, dosfstools is not installed. thx for the idea
gonna try this out .. bbl
yes, but of course you should create the partitions before starting
in and thankls
I was planning to do so..
also make sure the other fedora linux distros don't continually overwrite the MBR
hi
but not sure if I should make a separate partition for the windows programs, besides windows itself. How do I make sure the MBR is not continuously overwritten?
Only install one distro like Gentoo
jebus
make sure they don't all try and install Grub, which they may or may not decide to do without asking
this is going to be hard… I have no idea how to make sure they don't do so.. and this is the first time I am going to use grub
Diabolic_Cookie, If the other distros you intend to install offer the option, you can choose to have grub write to the partition where the current distro is being installed
to be honest, if you're partitioning just to try out different distros, you're much better off using Virtual Machines
yeah, install one and use something like qemu
I really want my setup working, and it's not just to try out the different distros, but more of a venture
do you want to share files between each as well…?
… not necessary.. but now that you mention it, it sounds sweet
this is my setup: Win XP Pro, Gentoo/Sabayon, Ubuntu, Mac OS Leopard, BackTrack2
I mean, only movies and mp3's not anything else really
whats the best place for a guide to install gentoo?
gentoo.org
did you even try?
one wrong move and kill all OS on the disk
google I think otherwise go with victori's vote
virtual machine, with a few caveats….
performance is a big deal I think.. so virtually it is impossible (Yes that joke was dumb)
How could I share files between the different OS', do you mean between every OS or just linux flavors?
1) DirectX acceleration won't work under VMWare Server, VMWare Workstation does, but it does so rather poorly. 2) MacOS support under VMWare is relatively unknown
eeyore-, I restarted my system as it is often necessary in windows. Now, direct rendering is working
every OS, running as a virtual machine, and each virtual machine to the host
what If I have a partition that is ntfs with all my files, and each OS has an individual partition? could that work then?
uwhat If I have a partition that is ntfs with all my files, and each OS has an individual partition? could that work then?/u
awesome
of course ntfs could cause some read/write problems I guess…
How is NTFS under Mac OS X
ntfs writing using the fuse driver is excellent, but still you're better off using fat32, even 16
actually i'm a noob on linux, but i hope that i'm gonne get it working
don't know
thanks for helping
Cheers.
like i said .. was some strange driver that didnt even have ati in its name…
they should realy write it in the help text in the kernel :/
is that ASUS?
what?
sorry wrong brand
Yeah, motherboard manufacturers rarely make their own controllers for everything.
the pegasos ppc is based on open firmware
produced by bPlan/Genesi
hi
what frequency of the cpu?
I would avoid conflicts with read/write errors and mac os x errors just by using a partition that is FAT32? I think I am sold… But take in hand that I only want to share videos, images and documents, not games or apps between the OS'.. doesn't this sound like the best solution?
thought about getting one of those made by Genesi, but freq. seemed slightly too low for my needs
yes, assuming OS X reads/write fat32
it is a G3 with 600MHz
its the first pegasos model
the followup model is equipped with a G4 at 1000MHz
can i install gentoo onto a fat32 partition ?
ah, discontinued i think
I'll just ask one of my friends… thx… you are all pretty help some in here I think. - just to sum it up, If a make a partition that is formatted FAT32, and a partition with Windows that is formatted NTFS, will I run into problems?
yep
unfortunately
but the hardware is fast enough for macos9 and morphos (naturally)
macosx works fine too
couldn't get linux working yet
only if intend to share the NTFS partition with every os, otherwise no
*you intend
but i hope that gentoo installation will work the way it shall
Will_Cego, you ve to kiss the gentoo cow first, then it will work the work it shall
in wich package(wich i don't have) is libswscale.so.0
?
hello
is that a ppc box you're installing on?
lovely! I think I will a partition that has windows on in (probably 3 GB) and a huge partition for all my apps and stuff, I will organize it into two main folders "apps" and "misc" where "misc" will be all my valuable music and docs this is going to be awesome!
sry for typos
what do you mean with ppc box? (sorry i'm not into that type of computing )
he means the main processor, which in the pegasos is a PowerPC, abbreviated as PPC
I hope you understood what I meant
yeah, but what about box?
Does anyone know what USE flags are required to install xfce4?
"required" ? "emerge xfce4" should just work
box, machine, computer - all synonyms
oh ok
yeah it is a ppc box
When it got to around ~93/128 packages it stopped due to the X USE flag not being enabled :/
G3 @ 600MHz, 256MB Ram
Radeon9200 AGP graphics card
did openssl disappear? I can'y find it in distfiles
what was the exact error?
Tommy`: One sec, let me pastebin it
(don't paste multiple lines in here, btw, in case you were about to)
hello - which Gentoo image should I use for a Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 laptop?
aha, good man
LOL I am going to have a total of seven partitions! 1 for swap (2 GB), 1 for win xp pro (3 GB), 1 for backtrack2, 1 for Sabayon/Gentoo, 1 for Ubuntu, 1 for Mac OS X and one for my apps!!!
I mean is it x86 or amd64?
can i install gentoo onto a fat32 partition ?
can I set the owner with mkdir?
How much space do you guys think I should put on my partitions for linux flavors and Mac OS X? (I have a 160 GB drive)
no with chown

Tommy`: http://pastebin.com/m1f2d301e
Hello everyone! I'm trying to install Gentoo on a Sony VGN-AR41S laptop. After the initial boot with the CD all seems well, however DNS resolution does not work. I can ping remote hosts by IP, but when I try their domain name I just time out. I have tried changing my DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf but with no luck. (DNS works for other Linux installs on my network) Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
ok
its time to burn gentoo
dhcpcd eth0?
How much space do fedora linux distributions like ubuntu and gentoo take up when installed?
as if anybody would be interested in knowing that you're listening to music at a crappy low bitrate
uas if anybody would be interested in knowing that you're listening to music at a crappy low bitrate
/u
uuas if anybody would be interested in knowing that you're listening to music at a crappy low bitrate
/u/u
anybody?
ok wait
as much as you want them to. depends on your amount of pr0n you store in /home/, the programs you install through your package manager, and so on
better
x86
Thanks, I'll give it a try and let you know what happens…
yep!
thank you
no problem ;D
do you know by any chance which CFLAGS and MAKEOPTS I should use?
one sec i wrote down what I used somewhere
ah - you have such a beast?
brb
anyone using the latest xterm and irssi? I am getting this for Alt+Num ± ² ³ ´ µ
to be more specific: one of my installations of gentoo takes up around 3.4G, the other one is at around 7G. it's nothing to do with the distribution really, but with the software you install. 'linux' as in 'the kernel' fits on two floppy disks (or even one, if you choose the features carefully while configuring it )
oddly Alt+5 gives a window menu
you need to turn on meta sends escape
thanks in irssi or xterm?
xterm
you can either ctrl+left click on the xterm
then turn it on
or edit your .Xdefaults
oh ok, it was not doing it in the shell
true
for unicode
thanks I will add that
I also have alwaysUseMods but I don't recall what it does for sure
2 /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-gentoo-r2 - this single file is
still does it
you may have to restart X
ah there is a xrdb -load I will use that
http://pastebin.com/m68456a1b
took a bit, sorry
oh ok
thank you that works
sweet
and it's -O2 (the letter O)
thx.. you helped a lot.. I don't plan on using much space on either of my distro's So perhaps 5 GB is fair for both ubuntu, gentoo and perhaps even smaller for backtrack2
now there is another odd thing I set the …*termname : xterm-256color in .Xdeafults but echo $TERM still yields xterm
Hi all, some of my services won't start. local is one of these and it really does nothing anyway. They just set their status to "starting" and hang. Any ideas what could be causing this?
whats the size of gentoo on a standard install?
yep, backtrack2 is 1.8G unpacked, iirc…
there is no standard install
you know a lot
that's the wonderful thing about gentoo: you got to choose everything
so… how much for the full install
s/Xdeafaults/Xdefaults
what's a full install of gentoo?
there is no full install. some packages are mutually exclusive
lol good point too
hmm get the following error when running mplayer and mplayer-bin: mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory . revdep-rebuild finds nothing and other programs are failing, any ideas?#
gentoo is exactly what you want it to be. may it be size-wise, feature-wise or whatever-wise…
so i was quite busy … making mu own custom live cd from a livecd
but i got stuck in the progress
(but that of course comes for the price that you have to spend a lot of time on it )
thers no mksqyashfs on my livecd
and i need it baad
…. I am getting pwned. well what about this.. I don't have a clue about the size needed for my ubuntu and gentoo installs then
*mksquashfs
thanks again - I was already searching forums & wiki host and found some data
2,5 might even be enough for BackTrack2
but it's always better to speak to someone with live experience
4gb per install will do plus a serpate swap if u wanne run em thru uml
the real issue is: what do you want to do?
I'm a linux programmer and an advanced gentoo user. I want to start writing ebuilds now, can you rtfm me to the right direction? I just can't find a nice reference.
I am making a swap partition that is 2 GB
perhaps even Damn Small Linux is sufficient… it comes at around 50 MB (compressed)
care to help me with ur experience ?
im making a livecd
from a lievcd
so i can view my hdd
cuz its unsupported
but mksquashfs is missing :$
so you're running 32bit … may I ask why not 64bit?
I just want linux to mess around with beryl I guess (just kidding, but I want that too) I want it to practice gimp and for programming
are you sure there is no other livecd which supports your controller? that would be less hassle
well ive searched imho
what are your space constraints?
I had trouble with some of that stuff too, so I know how it feels
I have a disk of 160 GB's
so more like an alround desktop system… i'd estimate a 6 GB partition to be enough for some time… put /home on an extra partition… 2 GB swap won't be needed if you don't have ridiculously little ram and open ridiculously large files
padde couldnt find mirros with live image only remarks about it
the ide driver is called vt8251
via sata driver erm
you're fine I'd partition maybe 40 GB for the OS, and the rest for the data partition
I have 2 GB ram as well
I tried dhcpcd eth0, it said dhcpcd: already running. ifconfig confirms that I have an IP address, netmask and broadcast are all correct; and /etc/resolv.conf all have the correct settings - so DHCP seems to be working fine. It's just seems to be DNS which is failing. It there some way I can do the equivilant of an nslookup from the install disk by using telnet or something?
My Gentoo is installed on a 30 GB drive, and I use another drive for all my music/vids/mp3s
you had trouble running 64bit?
how about you use a livecd, boot it up, download the driver, compile it, load it and then view your disk? much less than remastering a livecd first, if it's for one time use
padde anyway to get mksquashfs running ? not ebuild way ,
i mean with the configs and stuff
it usually hovers about 85% disk utilisation
padde ive just compiled it
how do i load it up ?
I am putting windows on its own partition, with a FAT32 partition for apps and so on, so I can reach those from linux
modprobe name
but I do have some games fully installed on it instead of my data drive, like quake4, which accounds for several GB
you can use ntfs as well nowadays
hmmm, usually dhcpcd should be able to configure it correctly
its a kernel module
not a modprobe
modprobe is the program to load kernel modules, genius
actually, you can go ahead and use NTFS, cause there's solid r/w support now
u have to enable it thru make menuconfig
using ntfs-3g
that is far better than fat32 anyway
as you're limited to 4 gig on files with fat32
so then it's in the default kernel already? even better, then every good livecd will support it out of the box, because they activate everything in the kernel to be compatible with as much hardware as possible
FAT is actually a very crappy filesystem, easy to corrupt
I heard about something called the fuse driver? is that the same dusik?
hmmm, did you try a reboot?
ntfs-3g works via fuse
hmmm, wait you're on a CD
padde its uncompatible with via_sata
fuse = file system in userspace
but its another form of via-sata
ahci
for vt8251
This is my setup Win XP Pro, Gentoo/Sabayon, Ubuntu, Mac OS Leopard, BackTrack2 - I want all of them to be able to reach this partiton with my music and so on on it.
it's just a few minutes to set up, you can follow the guide on gentoo-wiki.com
padde any more clues ?
i see… well, then just put the fitting kernel onto some usb stick and boot from there or so… you can re-use the / partition of the livecd or any other linux distribution you have at hands
canyou get me a link?
oh… I guess look up ntfs-3g support on MacOS; I've heard it's there, but I'm not an expert on MacOS
I have a NFS server that dies every 15 minutes now that I've upgraded to 1.0.12. Anyone heard of this?
I am writing all of this down
there are many possibilities, perhaps it's possible through a kernel command line argument?
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_NTFS_write_with_ntfs-3g
but i'm sorry, i have to leave now, got to get some sleep
well
the problem is i cant make sqyashfs for livecd
you tried net-setup?
bye, thx for the help
so i imagine i got same problem with booting from usb
net-setup eth0?
night padde
hint: you don't need a whole distribution just to boot an alternate kernel. you just need the alternate kernel, and then specify the root filesystem of the existing distribution in grub
asd
dsa
wops ?
why did i write that i wonder
ahh to update the screen
hmmm well… I need 3 GB for the windows install (taking note of further updates/mods) and I need 2 GB for my swap file (I have 2 GB ddr2 ram also) BackTrack will only need like 2,5 GB or maybe 3. Ubuntu and Gentoo I am not currently aware of and what about Mac OS X?
I also have the shared partition that is going to need lots of space (I have a 160 GB drive)
sounds like you won't be installing many programmes on windows
3gb windows disk ?
what are you on ?
atleast 10gb or you wont be able to do anything
3 GB is enough for a clean install, and maybe a few apps
the shared HD is also going to contain the apps for windows (perhaps I could emulate some through wine then)
as long as you don't use it much (windows does grow…)
good point about wine
does anyone have an idea why on earth i'm not getting my dns_domain name set even after configuring everything i need to?
me loves for wine
but the gentoo apps will be emerge into your gentoo OS drive, so you'll want something roomy
like I said, for the apps you mentioned, 40 GB would be pretty nice
how much dusik?
You can make Gentoo pretty damn compact, but I think you've got the luxury of a big HD
this "shared" partition should be either FAT 32 or NTFS, I'm not sure if I can make read/write work in backtrack with NTFS, what abour Mac OS X? does that support NTFS?
anyone at all?
Why won't backtrack support ntfs-3g, it's running the linux kernel
alternatively, you can install an ext2/3 driver for windows
had no idea I could do that?
yeah … even if you dont use it it seems to grow
lol, by "not using" I meant not booting into it
it does grow if you just leave it idling
So gentoo, ubuntu and backtrack all support ntfs though the use of ntfs-3g, windows does too, the only thing I need is to get the apple maaaaacs working
well it still seems to do it with computer turned off
every time you try to install something there isnt enough space
Oh she said that yesterday I believe dusik
install Gentoo on them!
damn it .. isn't anyone here good with bind ?
there's plenty of _better_ things to fix in mailman before that
[Kismet], what is rpm -q fedora-release
fedora-release-7-3
dwmw2_PVG, yes you are right, but why doesn't it have this simple feature. i mean, it is full of other unnecessary feaqtures. supporting smtp authentication would not hurt. Besides, what happens if someone wants to use a remote smtp service?
I think to have found my problem
[Kismet], good
who would run mailman and not a local smtp server?
that's just weird
(then the repos are ok, if fedora release is ok, if all third party are disabled)
[Kismet], ^
dwmw2_PVG, ok you are right about this, but I still believe that it is less weird than other features of the mailman suite
oh, I agree
I _will_ get rid of mailman one day and just do most of it in the MTA directly.
guzu, sometimes when they do a yum upgrade the repo files are not correct
I think my laptop's going to be here all day updating fedora core 5…
Southern_Gentlem, even if the third party repos are disabled and fedora-release is ok?
guzu yep
Southern_Gentlem, i can not see how this is happening
Has anybody got any bad experiences with Fedora 7 on a ThinkPad R61 (or with this notebook in general)?
kny, several people have report have problems with t60
guzu no idea how it is happening
i see. i'll search after this
best thing to do is have them paste there repos to the pastebin so you can see and can compare
Southern_Gentlem, thanks for this advice, something to investigate.
hmm when I put in a memory stick with (v)fat or ext* on it, it gets automounted. Not so with ntfs?
hmm when I put in a memory stick with (v)fat or ext* on it, it gets automounted. Not so with ntfs?
karlmag nope
Any idea (pointer) on how to make that happen?
karlmag, ntfs is pownd by M$
I have ntfs-3g in
mounting manually works, but that doesn't scale
karlmag could that be because of the way ntfs handles permissions?
I have no idea
Shouldn't you be able to overrun that somehow anyway?
i installed plesk and now httpd cannot start
What's almost as irritating is that I can't seem to find out which mechanism that does the mounting…
is it automount or some other mechanism?
udev
oh, right
wonder why I didn't think of that
gecew, plesk is not part of fedora and it replaces core files
howdy tux-nut
hi
tux-nut what happens if you spam the channel
hahahahaha yes you may get kicked
i learnt that yesterday
you will be kick, you maybe banned
tux-nut, i know you got the boot, it was my big shoe that did it
thank you very much
ha ha it you
tux-nut, i kicked you, but i did help with your problem
true, so true. that i cannot complain about
hi
Too much work in interrupt –why do i get this error in my linux and then i cant type anything, this is only a tftp and dhcp server? any help pls?
also , btw what is the command to view if eth0 is using full duplex 100mbits?
im here trying to iron out a few more newbee situation im in….. but im still happy with this product
tux-nut: can you help me with my problem i pasted above?
where is the paste
shorball are you taking the piss
shorball, ethtool
im trying to get to grips with this irc thing im still looking for the paste
excuse my slowness
# ethtool -c eth0
Coalesce parameters for eth0:
Operation not supported
i have proboems with yum in fedora 7, "Metadata file does not match checksum", is this a temporary network/repo error or is my fault ?
same result if using ethtool -a eth0
shorball, what about ethtool eth0
# ethtool eth0 –says No data available
hi, i recently installed vmware on my fedora, how can i block other users on the machine to use the vmware ??
that is the result guzu
shorball, there's no eth0 in? is dead?
Southern_Gentlem……now bookmarked
broli out of sync mirror yum clean all && yum install yum-fastestmirror &&yum update
Toskana, man chmod
it is not dead cuz i have here few result RX bytes:14616708 (13.9 Mb) TX bytes:4778360 (4.5 Mb)
hm, what is ifconfig ?
yeah i used ifconfig
chmod of which files…..
show us the output, please shorball
ifconfig didnt display if it is full/half duplex or 10/100mbits
shorball, in rafb.net/paste, of course
hi everyone
anyone have any suggestions on a good x-client for use on a windows machine?
Hmm.. it worked on other machines, just not mine. I guess something wrong isn't right here then.
http://rafb.net/p/EjALI634.html –that is the ifconfig result of eth0
evil_hitman, cygwin
i have had this probolem before, adn yum clean metadata was enough, but since i updated tofedora 7 that doens seems to work anymore
thankyou
btw this is an old 3com nic using fedora core 2
have a good evening/day/night
one tip, when running the installer, select, X-init-scripts
it's not included by default.
what do you think of the result?
wait
waiting..
take your time my friend
while im googling
shorball, good, cause there are a lot of reports on this issue is your fedora fully updated?
nope for sure
havent touched it for years and years
since the appearance of fc2
that box is only used for dhcp and tftp server for my client
shorball, so, maybe a little yum update kernel will fix this …. why don't you migrate to centos? it has long time support
guys, anyone know if there is tao-opengl rpm any where in the world ?
what's tao* ?
http://www.mono-project.com/Tao
thnx
hehehe i have centos too..why do you want fedora people to use centos?i think we are in a fedora channel
u hehehe i have centos too..why do you want fedora people to use centos?i think we are in a fedora channel/u
it's very very difficult to install it with tar, there is autotool for it
shorball, what's the other difference?
i have tried "yum cleann all" but that dosnt fixit, i continue to have "[Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum", i tried installing and erasing "yum-fastestmirror" but is not isntalled, adn yum downt work so i cant install it
shorball, frankly speaking, rhel is based on fedora lately, and centos on rhel, so
if you want a tomcat server hosting to be still updated five years later, it's almost impossible with fedora
damn dynamic IP's
shorball, and i'm sure it's not a fc2 channel, btw
alex[slx], waht about?
yeah that is why from this year i have slowly moved my servers to centos because of the long support
disconnecting me from irssi or losing my nick etc.
alex[slx], sorry
alex[slx], and changing ip's?
anyone know any multimedia player with cover-flip similar to itune , I really miss it any I like it
alex[slx], or just disconnect?
Changing IP
's and the problems it causes
alex[slx], that's bad
Yep, I'm going to get a static one next year.
shorball, so? have you found the solution?
not since yesterday
this box was working for years already since 2004 and the problem occured yesterday only
my last option is to install latest fedora in this box
shorball, without any known change in software?
shorball, how much ram
i have tried "yum cleann all" but that dosnt fixit, i continue to have "[Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum", i tried installing and erasing "yum-fastestmirror" but is not isntalled, adn yum downt work so i cant install it
i mean latest centos 4.* for long support, but as of now i cant cuz i made many bash scripting that i need to backup first (
guzu didnt change anything or upgrade anything in that box
then try to add pciirq=off or similar to kernel
512mb ram
515556k/523456k available (1540k kernel code, 7072k reserved, 599k data, 144k init, 0k highmem)
can i install a Ubuntu distribution using virt-manager on fedora ?
pciirq=off –what does this do?
shorball, enough ram for the job
wait
yeah
have been rebooting this box for almost 10times already since yesterday
but this box has been up for few months or years without rebooting
shorball, maybe some hardware died
I am trying to create a more or less 'hidden' user on my f7 install, but I am having problems.
perhaps this eth0 is malfunctioning
3com nic
ever since i started using rsync to mirror a remote mirror locally, yum provides seems not to work.. is there something wrong with the mirror?
maybe, try another and see
I do the following … "groupadd -g 400 tx; useradd -u 400 -d /home/.tx -g 400 tx"
Donald Becker and others. www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html
yeah, that's the first i've read
hi faceface
Can't open display: :0.0"
hi torbjorn
shorball, http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2002-December/009014.html i meant
with a 'normal' user it works fine
do you have xauth installed?
I create with -g 400 to keep it off the gdm
torbjorn, not sure…
shorball, btw, uname -r
xorg-x11-xauth
Using authority file /home/.tx/.Xauthority
this must be something to do with the gid 500…
I mean uid
for some reason when I log in as this user, I don't get a .xauthXXXXX file
i have tried "yum cleann all" but that dosnt fixit, i continue to have "[Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum", i tried installing and erasing "yum-fastestmirror" but is not isntalled, adn yum downt work so i cant install it. how can i solve this ?
broli, rpm -q yum
guzu yum-3.2.0-1.fc7
broli, rpm -V yum
doenst return anything
I bet there is a simple solution…
anyone have any idea why pidgin will not connect from my home NAT';s network
should I put the user in an X config file somewhere?
good, now download the latest yum from your favourite mirror, then rpm -ivh yum*rpm
but works fine from work on the un NAT's network
guzu this is a known error ? or we are trying to find the solution ?
nb
I mean nm
broli, i am trying to fix it, it's not a known error
broli, the metadata error, appears sometimes but then yum goes to the next mirror etc
yum clean all _not_ fixing this is not an error i've seen
guzu yeah, i had thi issue before, but the clean thingy always worked
brloibtw, your repo's are modified?
guzu i have been doing "yum clean all && yum upgrade" for like an hour or so
guzu havent touched the repo file, exectp to paste the url in firefox to see if its up
as Southern_Gentlem recommends, please use rafb.net/paste to paste your repo there
ok
Is there a way to install Fedora 7 if there's no CD/DVD-drive? (like, installing from USB or from HDD)
did you solve it?
guzu updating yum by hand seems to be a dependency nightmare
rpmdb_status.log
and check it
maybe rpm –rebuilddb
broli, paste your output to rafb/net/pste
i had to download 2 rpms
but its working now
broli, paste your output to rafb/net/paste
ok
well, is downloading the sqlite fiels now
report back please
would anyone have any idea why files w/ AC3 audio are quieter than everything else on my new FC7
guzu nope, same problem
broli, paste?
what part ?
im back
0 EDT 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux –this is the result of uname
broli, the output of yum
shorball, i see
what do you see?
i see 2.6
i see a very old 2.6
guzu http://www.pastebin.ca/659689
oh ok. ohhh i worked here last nov 26 ,2004 and this was installed last may 8,2004 hehehe
someone is running a 3 year old kernel.. asking to be hax0red
try noapic or pci=routeirq (don't ask ) shorball
yeah very old that's how opensource a very reliable os,without virus/trojan problem unlike winblows
uyeah very old that's how opensource a very reliable os,without virus/trojan problem unlike winblows/u
uyeah very old that's how opensource a very reliable os,without virus/trojan problem unlike winblows/u
heh
unfortunately i still have to put up with windows daily because of the industry i work in
cant be hacked cuz it has no internet connection hehehe
btw, anybody able to install m$ {vista,2008beta} in qemu?
torbjorn, no
but but.. what about the telekenetic hackers! :L
lol
hahaha
what about the cleaning lady?
no ladies in here only tech gays oppps im sorry tech guys rather
uno ladies in here only tech gays oppps im sorry tech guys rather/u
rotfl
that's my no. 1 reason of fedora crashes
wow i have here a backup centos 4.4 and im yum updating it and it will download 238MB …gawdd..it might eat up all my 8hours in here
well afk to play with my mythTV boxes' ATSC tuner
sheezzz
shorball, maybe it's getting openoffice?
hahahah of course not
i installed that without openoffice
I've read about the hardware requirements, but given your usage experiences - 512 mb RAM is enough, right?
that was a centos server 1 cd installer when i downloaded the iso
kny, enough for what?
i remember that cd
that is the only centos installer i have since i started to love centos hehehe
oh, installing/using fedora 7 and the usual programmes, i meant
Yeah, should be fine.
(where usual progs = browser, email, office, pdp++, …)
kny, i've used f7 with celeron/533/320mb of ram but was pretty slow
You could probably get away with less aswell.
kny, so, it will work, but the more ram the bettter
is dhcpd version 3.* something supported or used by fedora or centos?
shorball, dhcp-3.0.5-38.fc7
i have no centos around, please accept my apoligies
cool
guzu, virtualbox or vmware (i like the firsst one)
kvm or zen, assuming you have the virt hardware
broli, what;s virtualbox? it's free?
parallels is another good option
using it on my mac
http://www.virtualbox.org/ — read the puel
JohnMahowald, i see, i have no hardware? it's an pc …
kvm is free-er
brloi, JohnMahowald , zo0MGuy thnx, i'll check
JohnMahowald, afaik kvm and xen in fedora can only install linux, right?
kvm can do windows methinks
broli, thnx let's find out btw, kvm needs no xen kernel?
kvm is already in the linux based hosting services kernel
ok, thnx again
Install virt-manager and away you go
I unfortunately don't have a supported processor
JohnMahowald, what proc do u have?
I'm debating whether I should learn C or Lojban first..
What is Lojban?
A spoken language.
lojban.org
JohnMahowald, qemu-kvm up'n'runnin
a couple AMD 64s a Celeron, misc older Pentiums. How you can tell for yours is in the FAQ http://kvm.qumranet.com/kvmwiki/FAQ
wow.
alex[slx], I know, right?
why waste time learning a fake language …
hi somebody can giveme some tutorial how to build fedora core from source?
It's not fake
I suppose it depends on what you want to do.
It would probably be "more intelligent" and "look better on a resume" to learn C right now..
But hell — Lojban looks awesome, if I don't like it I'll drop it, heh.
Learn both.
considered trying Haskell? Just by the way.
or learn french, german, chinese, swahili, or whatever.
I'd say C has a more 'immediate' use.
I really want to get into LISP.
Falstius, Lojban peeks my interest more, and easier to learn online (free).
Dj-avu: you want to build the entire thing? several thousand packages would take a very long time to rebuild.
alex[slx], I was going to learn both, just didn't know what to pick up first
And with already knowing Lojban when I learn C, I can comment my code in Lojban
(That was only half-serious)
hi, i am looking for a readymade live-usb image (so that i don't need an installed version of fedora to create a usb live medium) - does this exist?
Which is a completely pointless way to comment code
olpc has those, but fedora?
alex[slx], who asked you? I shall comment my code as I see fit. And the manuals will be written in Lojban, also. :]
I was joking.
JohnMahowald, unfortunately, "my bios is not fully acpi compliant" 2008bet/kvm
betA
get it out of the live CD iso image. there's a tool, isotodisk or something, to do this
JohnMahowald, i want build iso with minimal package.
hello! I'm from Russia and I does install Fedora 7
^)
Dj-avu: install revisor
Dj-avu: then use that to make your own spin
i have no hard disk! does it work anyway?
i just have an 1gb usb stick
normally you give it a usb stick device to write to
yes, but i need a hard disk that has the ISO on it, right? it can't take the booted live cd for that
qemu is based on kvm, right?
other way around
I don't know. There's a disk image in the iso, whether you can access it on the disc while it's booted I'm unsure of.
broli, for virtualbox install do i have to disable selinux
http://kambing.ui.edu/fedora/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/ i am interested to build cd with minimal pack from here.
yum install /usr/bin/livecd-iso-to-disk
would anyone give me webspace to upload a fedora7-usbstick.iso f i made one? ,-)
probono, how much space you need
i'd guess roughly around 700gb
maybe 1gb
700mb that is of course
waw
i want create to with minimal package in win*** but i can`t how to build thats
Windows does not have the required tools to rebuild the Fedora install media.
owh sorry,
http://revisor.fedoraunity.org/ i am use this link to guide me, is thats true?
Dj-avu: correct. that tool will run on Fedora.
JohnMahowald, thanks, i will try now.
Why do I like KVM so much more than Xen?
'cos you like trolling
the virt-manager treats the two the same so far, but I had hell's own trouble getting an XP image working with Xen, but KVM it "just worked".
hi
don't know didly about virt stuff but don't M$ os's require full virtuallization to work with xen?
ie can't paravirt them
I was using full virt.
does someone work with the enlightenment desktop?
ah
I haven't tried yet not having hd space to use for win
elmarb, work with as in code or use? I've installed e17 from didier's repo to see how it's coming along (works but it's far from finished)
i installed it to, i ehm try to use it, but i also have beryl running
so i don't run it at the moment because i don't know how….
ah… hehe, I don't think raster's a fan of 3d so I don't think there's any support for it in E17
religious warPS2 or Xbox?/religious war
logout and fire up e17 as a temporary session
i've been without net for the last month and a bit and just downloaded 570 megs of fedora 6 updates. now konsole has no window decorations (though everything else does). any idea why?
it says me not to execute the binary i sholud type "enlightenment_start" but this says, meacity is still running, so it can not be launched
*metacity
hi, I have an NTP server on my network and want to auto configure it for my clients
elmarb, yeah… log out to gdm and choose E17 from the available sessions and it'll ask you if you want to make it your default or just use it for this session only
I can do this with Samba (login script) or DHCP, which one should I choose?
lol, meatcity
lol
the server runs Linux/Samba, the clients run windows
I don't like metacity much… to each his own
okay it try thanks
using beryl with gnome mostly here
yes me to
xfce is pretty nice and a bit lighter weight than gnome
xfce works with berly
beryl even
normally but I wanted to test it on fedora because i saw it on elive
DHCP sounds better to me, as it is a host configuration protocol, but whatever works.
brb
well, with active directory/windows you can point your DC to the NTP jboss server hosting and the clients will just pick it up
so that's host configuration too
is it possible to let windows pick up the NTP servers you distribute with your DHCP server?
anyone recommend a Linux+ study guide? If noone does the Linux+ anymore what cert you recommend. We are going to be supporting RHEL and I am looking at atleast the RHCT or the RHCE prolly too.
my volume levels are being reset to some bad defaults every time i log out or reboot — any idea how to make them save? i'm using alsamixer to set them up every time and it's a pain
i had this issue
but with the latest version of kde it is solved
what version of dhcpd does a fedora latest os support?
..6.4-35.fc7
is it using 3.1.0 dhcpd now?
Vinay-29: you're talking to me?
yaa
tremby:
ah, i've just rebooted after updating everything, so i guess i'll wait to see if the problem remains next time i boot up
thanks
RHCE goes well with RHEL as you would expect. I should go for RHCE sometime.
shorball, as far as dhclient, it is v3.0.5 in F7
peters-tx: i have updated selinux recently
i think just 2 days back
Vinay-29, I upgraded yesterday and got "libsepol.expand_terule_helper" and a few other errors during the RPM upgrade
Vinay-29, not upgrade, just a yum update
yaa l always use that
Vinay-29, hmm. Perhaps that's expected? I've not seen it before. Ultimately it said "semodule: Failed!"
uVinay-29, hmm. Perhaps that's expected? I've not seen it before. Ultimately it said "semodule: Failed!"/u
..0.5-38.fc7
shorball, actually yum list dhcp | grep dhcp
Hi All! Anyone can share it's FC7 apt repository?
[Kismet], think so
I do not know if any Fedora 7 apt repositories exist.
peters-tx: thanks.. 3.0.5 dhcpd doesnt support dhcp leasequery yet (
[Kismet], err sorry I confused apt/yum
Yeah, I thought Fedora was off apt
shorball, is that a DHCP server-side thing?
peters-tx: would you mind to share your FC7 yum repository?
Why apt anyway, familiar with it?
[Kismet], http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist/Fedora/7/i386/
peters-tx: yes it's supported 3.1.0 dhcpd version
(
I'm apt lover!! I hate the fact that yum have to connect to internet anytime it perform an operation
[Kismet]: yum -C
[Kismet]: although that is limited in what it can do offline
I'll try it out
Hello
I am trying to setup a kickstart server
and I still have this message at the begining
"You have multiple network devices on this system. Which would you like to install through?"
I've put this in ks.conf
network –device eth0 –bootproto dhcp
but this does not seems to be enough…
Hello,I need help
who is using hp laptop 6515b with F7 running ?
Likely nobody with that exact model. Were you having a problem with it?
not me ))
JohnMahowald, yeah,I have a big problem with it —X server can't start properly with ATI offical driver
ATI's is broken, apply the updates first
and my machine is x86-64 as well as Fedora 7 release 64bit
JohnMahowald,Hi,there is another problem ,it seems that I can't connnect to internet under my Fedora 7,any ideas ?
None. You haven't given any details.
morning
JohnMahowald, er…well ,I am in windows XP now ,and everything is fine ,I mean ,the network connection . But in F7 (x86_64), I can't ping the router and the output of ifconfig shows that ethnet card is not working,so …
*ethernet
what does not working mean, no IP?
anyone know of anything that can remove DRM from .WMA files ???
google is your best friend there
I pay my £10 subscription I should be allowed to play songs on my ipod
i don t know if it is allowed in here to help find drm removal tools
JohnMahowald, yeah
JohnMahowald, no IP ,yes
Old_friend_Pip did you turn dhcp on on your nic?
rossi, I think so
roosi he can ask but it is the answering that can get us in trouble
hmm do you have any way to see if the nic is connected to the switch or router like a led on it?
Southern_Gentlem, Do you get what my problem is ?
Old_friend_Pip, didnt look
Old_friend_Pip, how are you getting your ip
Southern_Gentlem, I use ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.* for eth0
use system-config-network
When I ping the router ,it results "Unreachable"
yeah
I used that but everything seems fine ,DHCP is on
route
when determin buy dedicated ip address for eth0, failed
JohnMahowald, route
i got a problem myself i was playing with xdmcp and i set it to show chooser and now i can t login to my kde no more
make sure you disable dns from dhcp and setyour dns to your isp
Old_friend_Pip, service network reset
Did you try x86_64 of F7 on HP 6515 laptop ?
I have a KVM of XP Pro. All I have is the .iso file and the install is asking for me to insert the installiation disk into the CD-ROM. Anyone know how to do this?
i think fedora has killed winxp…. after trying to boot into win xp i get an error to the likes of "ntldr missing" does this mean i have lost everything that was on the winxp c drive
?
no
tux-nut not necessarily
Southern_Gentlem, OK, back to my main problem ,the X server problem ,I installed ati offical newese driver package ,but still didn't work
tux-nut, try hd0,2
ok thanks
sorry to but in like this
butt
Southern_Gentlem, my videocard is ATI xpress 1270
Old_friend_Pip, look at the ati Hardware compatibility list i think they dropped that card
perlmonke2 use daemon tools to mount image of xp
xpress 1200 series
Also http://rpm.livna.org has much better ATI video packages
they dropped that model ?
check and see i think they did
OK,I thought it is a new card
Old_friend_Pip, also define "didnt work
southern_gentlem i ruined my kde login is there anyway i can fix that from the console?
rossi sorry i know nothing about kde
Old_friend_Pip, it is a better idea to give you the xorg.conf file ,but it is not on windows
rossi create a new account and see if the problem exist there as well
what do you mean by ruining kde login?
hey, guys, i'm trying to use kiba dock, how can i recompile my existing version of cairo with glitz support so that kiba-dock will work?
Old_friend_Pip, define "didnt work"
kc8hfi i played with xdmcp and now i get chooser on the xwindow that won t accept my user and pass
Southern_Gentlem, fatal error singal 11
"didnt work" is not enough to troubleshoot on
ok did you reboot in to runlevel 3 and run system-config-display –reconfig
rno, provide info for the other device too I'd guess
Southern_Gentlem, and there is a backtrace list outof "startx" command showing many items from 0 to 7
try what Southern_gentlem said, create a new account and see if that works. also, are you trying to login as root?
Southern_Gentlem, about /lib64/fglrx_drv.so and something like that
kc8hfi i tried the regular user and root
i would post a screenshot but i don t know how in irc hehe
Old_friend_Pip, answer my question Old_friend_Pip
there is an online pastebin, maybe somebody can link it?
roosi does it mess up as root
X server can't start ,and remains in text-mode environment
kc8hfi, not for screenshots
Old_friend_Pip, ty
Southern_Gentlem, Sorry for my poor language
reboot into runlevel3 as root
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
the console logins are ok, right?
get it on the pastebin and come back
well i can see the xwindow but it looks wierd
Southern_Gentlem, I am in windowx XP now, and you can tell me full instructions and I will go back here later soon because I can't use network on F7 as I said, linux can't reach internet for some wried reasons
Southern_Gentlem, And will you see the log file of Xorg ?
*weird
umm how does the paste bin work??
reboot into runlevel3 as root
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
write it down on a sheet of paper
OK,and I can collect information into USB disk
log back into windows
OK
sorry for disturbing but can we execute system-config-display at runlevel3 ?
the pastebin only works for text, you can paste log files, config files and such there, but no pisctures
OK,see you soon
harder to tell you how to mount the usb device in the long run
oh
anisfarhana, yes
well i changed a setting and now the xserver says choose a host to connect to
is anyone using kiba-dock?
i choose localhost and it showes me a wierd login screen but i can t login
is there a config file where i can change it back to kde login screen
try to login to the gui once, then do a tail /var/log/secure and see what it says
-bash: /var/log/secure: Permission denied
is anyone using kiba-dock?
sorry, forgot to tell you to try that as root
busy ?
i am logged in as root
can you paste the contents of your /etc/X11/xdm/kdmrc file into the pastebin?
anisfarhana, always
later then sire…
heh a simple reboot fixed the login issue thnx a lot for pointing that reboot thing out
hmm black screen after login
How do I change my hypervisor from Qemu to KVM with the virt-manager?
Lock table is out of available locker entries, error: cannot open Pubkeys index using db3 - Cannot allocate memory (12), rpmdb: Unknown locker ID: 1c5 …… etc errors while trying to install skype rpm on fedora…. what's wrong?
i'm glad you got it working
âñåì ïîêà. ÿ ñïàòêè
yeah sort of hehe i m stuck in a black window but i think i can figure it out
are you using the skype yum repo?
no.. yum doesn't know about skype
I downloaded from the skype website rpm for fc5
they've the same rpm for fc6 or f7….
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/repositories.html
can i install of live cd?
yes
sweet
ok i got the local xwindow working but xming still shows me a black window
is there a problem with the latest java in FC6?
the Sun JRE?
johnmahowald yes I have java running on my desktop and my laptop but finaly got the wife to let me put it on her desktop and i cant seem to get java web host to work
you asked the same question 5 times yesterday all with the same answer
page not found on skype.com
works for me
there's nothing wrong with that link
well sorrry
i have live cd in my hands
try reloading ?
not work means what?
doesn't have a job?
means when i go to verify my install i get nothing
poor unemployed Sun JRE
define "verify my install"
How does one verify a Sun JRE?
good thing we don t have to fork out 400$ for a M$ pos
Southern_Gentlem, Hi,I am back!
what are you talking about?
by going to there test page
trying to install using yum now…
you mean the browser plugin isn't working
yes
haveing java installed and having your browser plugin working correctly are 2 different things you know
well since i m poor too i rather use something that works right instead of paying 400$ for a windows os
what im not understanding is i did the same steps on this desktop as i did on the last two installs
where is the system log stored in F7?
wherever it is configured to in /etc/syslog.conf
http://fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/java-i386/
thankls
Southern_Gentlem, Hello, thank you very much for help , and this is the log file of Xorg after I installed ATI offical driver package !
http://rafb.net/p/VnSisQ53.html
is this a x86_64 bit machine by chance?
thanks for the repo… i think its installing
what "system logs" are you looking for exactly?
no 32 bit
browser is what, firefox?
Southern_Gentlem, And this is the Xorg.conf file before installing ATI offical driver package :http://rafb.net/p/je7NfY38.html
JohnMahowald yes
does it appear in the list when you visit about:plugins ?
all i did was a basic install of 6 since theres so many updates on it now plus cant seam to find the live cd for 7
yes
oh what no dont have an about plugins
JohnMahowald, could you help me with above information ?
Southern_Gentlem, there you there ?
I'm not helping install the official ATI release, only packages from http://rpm.livna.org
but than neather does this system and its working fine on this one
JohnMahowald, OK,and can you analysis my Xorg.log file ?
All firefox installs I've ever used on any platform have an about:plugins location, it's where I see it what are loaded
http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/ati-yum-livna/
no
if you've installed ati's binary from their page .. good luck
need to know if you can install fedora from the live cd again?
JohnMahowald, thank you all the same
opsec, I see!
well im not seeing it i got an about mozilla firefox over in the help tab but thats it
opsec nope
how about how to use the sha1sum .. need to know about that again?
afterall .. you only asked 20 something times yesterday
http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:plugins
dah forgot about that
k did it on the wifes system and java is the first thing that comes up
java plug-in 1.6.0_02
yeah sorry to many ? same as same wahen cant find it then two many
did you look at the java link i gave you jtravnick ?
http://fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/java-i386/
what?
opsec yes and thats what i did when i installed it
sha1sum might be esier from inside fedora
i use sha1sum from on top of mt. fuji
i asked to many ? and iam dexlic so my spell my sent are hard sometimes to figure out
but might just reinstall fC and start from scratch
OK,see you later!
you're speech does not look dyslexic .. it looks like you can't speak english
oh
if i could find the live cd for 7 than i would start with that
ftp://mirror.anl.gov/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Live/i386
i guess actually *using* the browser is a whole other thing..
no been all over fedoras wiki for the last hour and only links i was coming up with was for the dvd
it took me less than 30 seconds
sometimes i don't mind doing other peoples work for them… it's when they ask me 20 times to do the same thing i get a little bit pissy
Someone awhile ago mentioned a way to get free fedora discs delivered…was that a hoax? and if not, where do I go?
yeah some dumb folk like me ask that cause they don't understand i aint to smart
well maybe im blind than couse i couldnt find it when i hit download all it would give me was the dvd
fedoraproject.org or getfedora@fedoraos.org
for me?
follow the instructions on fedoraproject.org or send your information to getfedora@fedoraos.org
Why is it not recommended to upgrade the Fedora Core version using yum?
because things may break
Ok…looks like they're closed
if it's a remote system then i would not attempt it
Interesting story:
what are you talking about?
closed? who?
I installed fedora core 1, but the kernel was buggy so I swapped it out and installed the kernel from RHE 3
It's a local laptop system which's running an unmodified FC5 install.
Oh, closed? THe media center has reached its quota of 100 so I have to wait for next month.
i gave you 2 options
bittorrent download fedora, its not that bad that way
I don't have internet at home…and internet here sucks…
getfedora@fedoraos.org does not have a limit of 100
I have a 256 MB flash drive but that's about it as far as sneakernet goes :/
no idea what you're going on about
Oh, forgot about fedoraos.org. Lemme look
So do I just send an email to getfedora@fedoraos.org?
i don't know .. scroll up and actually read our conversation
fedoraproject.org and fedoraos.org look like two different urls…are those sites affiliated?
never heard of fedoraos.org
fedoraproject.org is official, fedoraos.org is a community site
scrolling up didn't really help, and I don't want to be rude by just saying "gimme a disk" to fedoraos
http://fedoraos.org/repositories.html
top upper left corner
you need to send them your mailing address and such and request a cd
for me?
follow the instructions on fedoraproject.org or send your information to getfedora@fedoraos.org
ok.
thanks.
What's the latest STABLE version?
I have an athlon (686 equivalent) with 256 MB ram
just so you know that can leave a system unbootable if you're not careful
Fedora 7 is latest
So you imply that they're all stable?
I've had the fedora 1 kernel oops during an interrupt handler, which made it panic . Had to switch to the Redhat Enterprise 3's kernel package
that depends on your definition of "stable", then" doesn't it?
my horses are in a stable
thanks. Following: http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/99/upgrade-fc5-to-fc6-with-yum/ and http://www.ioncannon.net/linux/68/upgrading-from-fc6-to-fedora7-with-yum/ .
By stable I mean it won't crash. THe aforementioned kernel panic is exactly what I *don't* want.
your horses run linux?
Fedora 1? That was three years and six releases ago.
this is fedora 7 .. fedora core 1 has not been supported in 3 years?
I get whiskey for my men and beer for my horses
I've never had F7 crash *shrug*
yeah, which is exactly why I'm here getting the info I need for upgrade.
Panic trying to segfault the handler
the stock market crashed in 1918 .. does that mean that todays stock market s worthless?
ah…so it probably got fixed then?
nah, why would anyone fix it?
the same rpms are just repackaged over and over .. i still use linus' first kernel myself
this is what live CDs are for, to test things… but of course the live doesn't do mp3
you can install mp3 support on the livecd if you want
but the mp3 format itself has nothing to do with the kernel crashing
My guess is that there was a kernel fault during an interrupt handler.
It oopsed, and tried to segfault the current process, which in turn caused a kernel panic because you can't kill an interrupt handler.
regardless - a) why would you be playing mp3s from the commandline anyway? and b) as I've said, I've never seen F7 crash at all, nor have I seen any reports of playing music making people's systems crash
I'm a command line junkie
that's why
….btw, who'se bright idea was it to put penises in the xscreensaver package?
has anybody experienced any issues with fc7 x86_64 and cedega?
oh wait…fedora 1 nevermind
??
well Ubuntu featured nude people
so
i just installed fedora 7…when i changed screen resolution to 1280*1024 only a small box moves around….now i m not able to use fedora..how to solve this??
ganes1, what do you mean by "only a small box moves around" ? Is it green?
Try running redhat-config-xfree86
I'd suggest conservative values
if that doesn't work, then you can modify /etc/X11/XF86config.
instead of redhat-config-xfree86 .. use system-config-display
(I think? Assuming basic structure hasn't changed much)
redhat-config-xfree86 - ancient
peters,a small yellow colored box moves ….nothing else…
um…yeah, what he said
and the config is not /etc/X11/XF86config.. but /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
Eh? Why did XFree86 go bye-bye?
xorg with a small x btw
as opposed to "The X Consortium"?
i just seen this woman, shes gotlong dark hair and brown eyes, VERY hot. she must be new here
s|"/etc/X11/Xorg.conf"|"/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
xfree86 went bye bye because of licensing
iirc
even log in screan is not coming….
oops, sorry about that, wrong tab
anything specific about the licensing? I thought xfree86 was under the MIT license…
has anybody experienced any issues with fc7 x86_64 and cedega? or any codec issues, im just trying to determine if i want to install that version or the i386 one
Shentino, and the MIT license s not open source
ok! i want to run windows in a window within linux since some programs i need don't work in wine. what do i need to look up?
virtual PC?
vmware
thanks
I'm glad you t ried with wine first
oh, i love wine
Anyway, thanks yall for the info on fedora 7. I got an order placed.
tremby, xen can do it too I hear
peters-tx, have you tried it
virt-manager for running other operating systems
Southern_Gentlem, not personally, but the Novell guy at linuxworldexpo had an impressive demo
Southern_Gentlem, I understand it is stable atm
windows on Xen?? ..
peters-tx, all depends on the hardware and the admin doing it
KageSenshi, yes
iirc .. only certain processors able to do that
hardware shouldn't matter ultimately
but hardware can make stuff run faster
but in this case .. hware matters
the admin makes a big difference in how stuff runs..
coz running windows in Xen requires a particular feature in the proc
unfortunately, Citrix bought Xensource… http://www.xensource.com
oh well we have kvm
KageSenshi, I'll have to take your word for it
KageSenshi, I have no experience
hmm, I thought symantec wa after a virtualization company also..
if u dual boot on pc with u network conection does u have to re doo it to second os
if u dual boot on pc with u network conection does u have to re doo it to second os
JohnMahowald, yes I've heard of KVM but I've got no experience w/ that either
and know little about it. URL ?
snowbird, not likely
peters-tx: http://kvm.qumranet.com/
I think it sucks that citrix got xensource, citrix is a big POS
JohnMahowald, ty
oh hey, there's Bochs too 8D
any ideas on a good firewall manager (iptables or anything out) that will aid in configuring firewall rules, NAT, but also traffic shaping?
firestarter
KVM appears to use hardware functionality too for virtualization
hey guys… friend installed the livna fglrx kmod and everything else, livna-config-display is not running properly
ixion_uk, go to freshmeat and enter "firewall" or "iptables" into search; there are a few
new running shoes perhaps?
ta
lol
Can someone tell me if theres a howto for "enable rtc" in the kernel?
ixion_uk, http://freshmeat.net
do you know of any that are actually easy to use lol its all well and good downloading them one at a time and trying but it sure is the long way around
can't open file 'livnaConfigClient.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
ixion_uk, I'd look at the "popularity" of the tools; there was one that was supposed to be very friendly but I don't remember which 8(
k, cool, thanks neway
er wtf anyway lol
that actually turned out quite well… that typo
yum remove livna-config-display; yum install livna-config-display
well.. as typos go
ixion_uk, Mason perhaps
thats what i was thinking too, so had her try that
and it repeats
so im thinking its a new rpm that has a glitch in it
check livnas bugzilla
peters-tx: Popularity: 0.48% ??
forgot they had one, ty openbysource
bah. opsec
ixion_uk, "Firewall Builder" ?
wtf does 0.48% mean lol
yeah
is primary.sqlite.bz2 gets downloaded again from start if there is a network interruption while running yum
Hi guys
ixion_uk, 17.95% for that one
how can I open the 81 port on the firewall?
An automated firewall builder for ipfwadm or ipchains firewalls. ?
ixion_uk, I use VIM for my firewall builder
im seeing 0.48% lol
system-config-securitylevel
Can someone tell me if theres a howto for "enable rtc" in the kernel?
done
peters-tx I can just about deal with vim for firewall rules and nat.. but not traffic shaping
ixion_uk, no no check out that "Firewall Builder" — http://kvm.qumranet.com/
system-config-securitylevel
ixion_uk, oh hmm not sure about the shaping 8D
done and then
you're not getting a hand holding
has anybody experienced any issues with fc7 x86_64 and cedega? or any codec issues, im just trying to determine if i want to install that version or the i386 one
on the Other ports field, what have I write?
i use gdog for fire wall
stim, last i checked, cedega wasnt x64 compatible
click add, type in the port number and select protocol
I use the windowsfirewall!! hehehe
sorry, off topic
peters-tx,when i reboot it shows all booting information but instead of login screen a small box comes…can u give me d solution??
er peters-tx did you intend to link me to http://kvm.qumranet.com/ ??
found it on freshmeant
was a bit confused there for a bit lol
so, http:8080 right?
ixion_uk, oops
no must be my clipboard doh
it is possible to have 2 subnet mask on 1 server ?
in short yes
anisfarhana, yes
anisfarhana, no but you can route to different subnets easily
interesting..
peters-tx, umm, thats not true. how many nics are available?
u'll need one ip address per subnet
theres alot more to it than a simple no
ganesh, you will have to boot into runlevel 3 at the beginning, where it does the countdown to boot–GRUB
hmm, no. system-config-securitylevel, click add, type in port, and select the protocol
daemoen, that is true
ls-als /lib/modules/2.6.22.1-41.fc7/kernel/drivers/rtc
let say if i have 3 NICs , 1st nic - internet/gateway , 2nd nic = subnet mask 10.2.*.* , 3rd nic = 192.168.*.* , possible ?
daemoen, in other words I agree
anisfarhana yes
anisfarhana, provided each of them is on the proper ip range, yes
myrefef
but, you cannot for instance put 1 single nic (eth0 for instance) on 2 different subnets
hmm..then how to 192.168.*.* get the internet connection from hmm…let say the gateway is 10.2.1.2…how ?
eh?
:-S
anisfarhana, right now, i cant walk you through configuring an entire network, i dont have the time today
that is okey
hang on, thats broken in f7. looking up command on how to do it
#networking
ls -a
ok thx..will go there
you just said that the internet was on nic 1, why would the gateway be on the same ip seubnet as nic 2 ?
Specify additional ports in the form 'service:protocol', such as 'imap:tcp'.
nic1 route to nic2 and im using 10.2 range ip address
and are you using a firewall ?
ls: /lib/modules/2.6.22.1-41.fc7/kernel/drivers/rtc: No such file or directory
if you want to open 8080 .. select https
so if I would like to open the 8080 how have I to write?
because its more likely to be a firewall that would stop you than your networking config
actually im using IPCOP as the firewall
and for the 81?
then i'd say you deleted it .. or someone did
presuming ofcourse you have setup the networking for the 192. subnet ?
not yet
i have an official fedora kernel .. and those modules are there
and this IPCOP… is this another box to the one you want to setup ?
or are you trying to add this 192. network to the IPCOP box?
opsec every thing i read says its not enabled by default.
no , i want to put it together , actually i want 192 for the wifi AP
yes , i want to add 192 , special for AP only
anisfarhana… do you want to add 192 to the IPCOP server?
yes
currently i have green + red
http://rafb.net/p/3pMgiT70.html
might be orange for 192
has the IPCOP ineterface not detected this additoinal NIC ????
anisfarhana.. that would sound right
i don't say that , i even not try it yet , i just want to study it first
if I would like to open a non standard port like the 81 what I have to write there?
I used IPCOP years ago… but as far as I remember.. you stick the NIC in, give it an ip address/subnet via the interface and setup the rules and away you go
please look at system-config-securitylevel .. click on "other ports"
opsec it dont work
?
yeah i know about it , i just wonder how 192 (orange) to get internet connection from red interface
and then??
hi
claude_monet_imp, click "Add"
IPCOP will NAT the traffic, in the same way that it does from the 10. network to the internet at the moment
opsec system-config-secuirylevel firewall configuration has been borked since day one in f7
there is no Add button!
peters-tx,there are many options in boot menu..but what is runlevel 3
mine works fine
not a single problem
ok , if i put AP on 192 , does it still can access to network 10. ?
opsec untill you reboot
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp –dport 81 -j ACCEPT
ganesh, you will have to Edit the Kernel line, and append a "3" to the end of the line. Then boot
only if you allow it in the IPCOP configuration
my second f7 computer looses the ability to use swap (at least in runlevel 5)
rules
service iptables save
at first , i wanna put AP on 10 , but for the security's sake , i can't do that , might be wifi's user can access to "Windows Workgroup" at my office place
ganesh, it won't fix your problem but will get you in a mode where you can fix it
scratch that they are there.. i didnt look for my kernel dir… but how do i enable it ?
doesn't works!
ok…i ll try…
to add tcp port 8080, iptables -A INPUT -m state –state NEW -m tcp -p tcp –dport 8080 -j ACCEPT
guys, system-config-firewall works fine for me in F7
GTK, QT ?
I just added a port "5555" on mine… no problem
not even sure of the context Im afraid
it just says one is the GTK client and the other is the QT client ?
there is no row for the 81 port in the "/etc/sysconfig/iptables"
try this:
conclusion is , 192 can be under one apache geronimo server hosting (IPCOP)….correct ?
watch the chain, I put INPUT, you might not wanna put it ethere
not sure what you mean by "one server" but im sure you can do whatever it is you are trying to accomplish
strange thing
peters-tx, no one said s-c-firewall
i have 1 IPcop here , which is green running on 10. and i want orange running on 192 , but both of it get the internet connection from red interface..possible ?
YES
great! thx for your information )
i'm new to fc5 and have a question. is there any packet browser like aptitude or deselect on debian?
ipcop
oh uh , one more thing..i hope orange cannot access to green interface..hopefully sire
anisfarhana… by default, I dont think so
peters-tx, the problem we are seeing is that its gone when you reboot
unless i dmz green and orange..i think they can access into it
MrParity, one FC5 is EOL and off topic for this channel
VileGent, Hmmmm I'll check that
please upgrade to fc7
VileGent, I don't see how–it made an entry in /etc/sysconfig/iptables
MrParity, do you mean package manager?
are you still there?
i can't upgrade to fc5, because it is a test environment for a fc5 server
i can't upgrade to fc7
MrParity, that seems very dumb to be building a test bed for a release that is not getting any more updates
VileGent, ooops sorry you were talking about "securitylevel" ! doh
VileGent, 8(
I get too distracted… sigh
an FC5 server is nothing more than a target for compromise
I installed wireshark using yum install wireshark
it installed successfully… but now it is :command not found…. whereis wireshark doesn't report any binary too
"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su –login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.
i think yum is the packagemanager (or a frontend for it). i want to have an (curses) interface where packages are in categories, where i can search and sort the list and somethink like that.
we will not help you with FC5
yes, but as long as the server won't be updated i can not change.
the server needs to be upgraded - PERIOD
Nothing of what zcat says works… i cannot find where yum installed wireshark!!
I would like open the 81 port is it correct? http://pastie.caboo.se/88338
rpm -ql package
if it would be my server i would install debian, so telling me to upgrade the server is not very usefull
So persuade them to install Debian, we don't care.
Wireshark
install debian, install kubuntu, gentoo we don't care
no… not found in the menu
we will also not support you with running an insecure version of Fedora
we are to busy dealing with stupidity like claude_monet_imp
rpm -ql shows a lot of files… but none of them looks to be executable… none of them resides in bin or sbin etc…
I don't see why people use gentoo for servers… you have to compile your updates and that affects the performance of the server
unless they prepackage
thank you EvilBob
and MrParity
look at the files in /usr/sbin/
you may want the wireshark-gnome package installed
ok.. installing wireshark-gnome now
I would like open the 81 port is it correct? http://pastie.caboo.se/88338
yeah "yum search foo"
cat /etc/redhat-release
I have a Fedora 7 not a RED HAT!
are you there?
then paste "rpm -q kernel" to http://rafb.net/paste
just do what is asked
cat /etc/fedora-release then, same thing
How do I know the chmod ??? of an file?
oh, "and MrParity" ?
what do you mean?
ls -l
maybe i missed something
Anyone know how to add a cd-rom to a Qemu VM using the virt-manager?
you had an EL kernel the other day and swore you didn't *shrugs*
cat /etc/redhat-release
then paste "rpm -q kernel" to http://rafb.net/paste
kernel-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 - kernel-2.6.22.1-41.fc7
drwxrwxrwx - but I like to get the 777 output
are ok?
useless
those looks like fedora kernels
totally useless
but you didn't do what bob asked you
I am done
I told you that I have a Fedora 7
which is frustrating
I did not ask that
when you don't follow instructions of people trying to help you, it's disrespectful
and the likelihood of them helping you in the future is diminished
I don't understand what's the problem
scroll up and look at what EvilBob asked of you
cat /etc/redhat-release = Fedora release 7 (Moonshine)
ls has many options, but that doesn't seem to be one of them
ok now i know this is realy a dumb question but im having a brain freaze but whats the comand to get the checksum from a file downloaded??
I don't think there are other things to do
right?
sha1sum file
you now know the kernel and the distribution of the linux that I have installed
download the file itself and the SHA!SUM into a directory by themselves.. then run bobs command
Jim did you get any of the storms tuesday?
dah i was putting in sha1checksum thanks bob
so I would like open the 81 port is it correct? http://pastie.caboo.se/88338
bob nope no rain here fact its so dry i let the dog out yesterday and two trees where fighting over him

I have not been in my office in months, way to hoot in there
hot
old cat died i dont know who to thank only that its not stolen
old kitty pased away and dog brought new kitty home
haha wow haven't been on IRC in years… quick Q… what packages provides me with the locale files? e.g. /usr/share/locale/en/LC_NUMERIC etc for different langs?
new kitty had note stuck into collar

daemoen, ?
so here i am burning 7 live cd is there anything i need to know when i go to install it?
my f7 is no longer mounting swap. is this a known issue?
let me know how it goes.
had to re burn mine
hello
i just installed fedora 7 as my very first *nix based system
_Ergo_, cheers
and i wonder if there is any tool to configure NAT ?
(you need a proxy or what?)
*hm*
Hiya.
no funny GUI to configure NAT, afaik, sorry.
or do i have to edit things by hand ?
by hhand
k, thanks
NAT is a 3 command line thing
i have my notes on installing true type fonts, java, flash, realplayer, adobe and a few other things will those notes work with 7?
probably, but first i have to find some howtos
i dont have any experience with linux
it was a mistab completion openbysource
daemoen, oh np
Anyone know if MIRC is still aroud and if it works /w Fedora?
mirc is a windows program
i use mirc
shame on you.
i mean xchat
use xchat, irssi, bitchx, ninja, kvirc .. or something else
can be wine under fedora if am not mistaken
snowbird, /j ##windows
hmm pindgin and irc work fine for me….
pidgin also works
btw. the first thing pidgin did …. was erasing my buddy list from server for my national IM :/ not good
Using xchat too. Okie. Honestly, this is the first time I've ever used unix.
this isn't unix
how do u make a buddy list in ksirc
fedoraproject.org
also, if you're new here, please take the time to read /topic
Fedora, sorry. First time using xwindows type stuff. First time outside of windows.
uFedora, sorry. First time using xwindows type stuff. First time outside of windows./u
I haven't gotten to it yet in the faq, but I was wondering how you would check to see what hardware is installed? The equivilent of device manager?
there is hardware compt checker at home
hal-device-manager
Is that in the gui by default? Or how would I go about accessing it?
do I have to do anything special to make apache serve up .css files at webpages rather than text files ??
..css files are text files
hmm, this thing ive installed, im supposed to access it as a webpage.. but all thats in there is this css files and some php files… but the php files arent doing much…
php installed?
hwbrowser
yeah…
he left…
the css file has all this stuff in it that looks like its supposed to be making a webpage
restarted httpd since doing so?
JohnMahowald yea
I assume css means cascading style sheet
me 2
this thing has f-all documentation
do I have to do anything special to make apache serve up .css files at webpages rather than text files ??
oops
lol
no
body {background colour #2343 etc etc stuff
so its obviously supposed to be a webpage
css isn't the content itself, just styles to apply to other pages…
ixion_uk, .css is like any html file
ixion_uk, wait a sec, there is a mime-type for it…
ixion_uk, in /etc/mime.types … "text/css css"
what is this application?
supposed to manage traffic shaping
ixion_uk, which app
http://blog.4th.ro/project/routeit
_Ergo_, firestarte can help you with nat afaik
firestarter
thanks :]
np
ixion_uk, "grep -i css /etc/mime.types"
css files apply styles to html pages
you don't browse them directly
peters-tx: ive found the bit you mentioned… and yeah it says what you said text/css
you make references to the style sheets in the html file(s)
its hard to copy and paste accross… but I have what you have
what page are you trying to view for what purpose?
http://blog.4th.ro/files/routeit-0.4.tar.bz2 — in there is a directory called web… thats supposed to be the web interface
ah hangon.. theres a sub dir
view the php files
php does nothing but give errors.. php errors
how do I delete an symbolic link?
not the css .. i'm sure the css is referenced in the php files to provide styles
unot the css .. i'm sure the css is referenced in the php files to provide styles/u
well, then you have a php config problem
clars, just like any reg file… rm
clars, same way you delete any file
ok well thanks.. gotta shoot
ill try this some other time
is there a place that lists all the ports that ispconfig runs on?
did you actually read INSTALL from the bzip file?
i'll try it
it's reading the line break as a space and your current styles aren't ignoring it
So your images may have been located at images/… [domon]
works on my machine, I downloaded your html
as opposed to styles/images/….
solid
they are in styles/images for sure
thanks for your help rareedge
it won't affect any other browsers. it's an IE speciifc issue. the only pain in the ass is needing ot have those lis on one line
[domon]: No, not the images.
the absolute URL works
that's sorta what i expected
Your stylesheet. Is your stylesheet in /styles ?
you're welcome
yea
ie is retarded like this
oh right
haha
[domon]: That's what I'm saying
your URls should be images/…
not styles/images/…
ahhhhhh
thanks
if you care to save some bits and bytes, you can switch it from an absolute to that format instead
images/…
yea
which means it takes less time to load
Yeah, it should be negligible but you never know
i mean…i know it's negligible
Doesn't hurt to make your code beautiful
but it does all add up
code should always be beautiful
I agree
Agree too
me three!
brbz
How do I get rid of the natural extra space in a li?
perhaps it's caused by extra whitespace
What's the fix?
remove extra whitespace
alternatively it could involve the margin/padding/border properties
hmm
how would i get rid of the whitespace?
delete it from the HTML
/lili
instead of
/li
li
oh
that kind of whitespace
that's not what's causing it
I get a space character
For no reason
then try border/padding/margin
On every lia
there is always a reason.
It's not border/padding/margin
it goes away
if i use float
but when i use float
block; on the "a"
inline;
center, would it be position absolute center, what is the syntax?
hi. as !important is now a valid syntax for IE7, what could I use instead to fix some css bugs with IE7 ? Thanks
you want the whole div to be centered or the contents of the div?
left;
rareedge, it would prolly appera the same in this case, if you would could you show me both
just apply background-color to the ul
(it's an IE bug)
Google "conditional comments"
to center the div, give it a width (required) and then use margin: 0px auto;
to center the div's contents, just use text-align: center;
I know about conditional comments, but it is only something we can put in the html code, and not in the css, or am I wrong?
Sorry, brb again.
display auto doesn't do anything.
oops, I meant overflow: auto;
sorry about that
rareedge, thank you
you're welcome
Okay, sorry.
ah
It fixed firefox too
Thank you rareedge
tyoma71:no worry I just need to find a new hack which will work in IE7 as well and that I can put just in the css
Well, here's one thing I would suggest.
0 5 4 9px; what is the order for those, like top left right bottom?
While conditional comments are in the markup itself, you could have within the conditional comments the use of a particular class or ID or what have you that is defined in your CSS stylesheet.
top right bottom left
I am not sure if the old tricks, silithlas , of using * and _ and whatnot still work with IE7. I suspect they don't. What problems are you having that you need a hack-around for IE7?
ivx:clockwise
silithlas, thanks
tag for an IE7-specific supplemental stylesheet.
yep, clockwise starting from the top
my problem is that when I put in an article a picture with float:right, the pictures look weird in IE and go on top of the right margin, it goes too far to the right, strange
Btw is there any programs that would launch a browser for me in a specified resolution, eg 1024×768. Problem is I'm using a 22" widescreen monitor @ 1650 x 1050 and I'm pretty sure it's only a minority with this kind of resolution.
using Firefox, you can do this with the Webdevelopers Toolbar
tag to an ie7.css supplemental stylesheet or something to correct this.
there's a similar toolbar for IE
OKay.
can I put two stylesheets in my head section, and the second one will go "after" the first one?
Yes, you can do that.
I'll try then
And if you only want the 2nd one to be picked up by IE7, then just put it inside a conditional comment.
too bad there's nothing we can do just inside the css
Yeah, well, CSS hacks are supposed to be a thing of the past now with IE7.
Conditional comments are probably a better way to do it anyway.
I'll do, thx )
At least they're intended rather than trying to take advantage of some bug in IE's parser.
what is fun is that IE7 fixes the !important bug, but they did not fix the css bugs so now IE7 still has bugs but nothing to be able to fix them inside css
Go figure, right?
mmm? didn't understand
If I set the width attribute of a div, should paragraph text not automatically wrap at that width?
Unless you have overflow: hidden;, in which case a really long line (like a URL) may just get cut off.
tyoma71, in that case, my page is doing weird stuff. I shall investigate, thanks.
Sure.
is it possible to change that blue color when mouse over a drop down list ?
that's a system color, I don't believe so unless you draw your own dropdown box from scratch (using divs and such)
actually, I think I'm wrong
I'm pretty sure that's a selected item color within the OS, not something you can alter unless you do as you said and create your own box.
I believe it's Selected Items on Windows 95-XP (maybe Vista, I have never used it).
hmmm … that's not good
On OS X it's Highlight Color.
You MAY be able to change it in the same way people used to (still do?) change the scrollbar colors.
But I don't know anything about how to do that.
i once did it with a c++ script
yea, now I'm interested… trying it
i think it is possible with css too
It may be. I don't know. I've never done it nor have I seen it done.
But that doesn't mean it's not possible!
you can change the background color of non-selected options
but the selected option is set by the OS
Mm.
unless you draw the entire thing by hand, divs, javascript, etc
then you can do whatever the hell you like
Yuck
i've looked a bit online …. cant seem to find a specific enough answer, any thought? I'm interested in knowing if its better to set your font in the * {} … or in your body {} … if you want every element to be a certain family.
I don't know that it's better or worse to do one or the other, but I would put it in the body tag.
i just read that it is possible to change the scrollbar color .. but it works only on IE … so …. that sucks
that don't inherit font properties
yeah i was thinking that too, didnt know if lieek … IE ignored * maybe in some cases
yea, that's an IE-only thing
oh cool, i suppose i can use it in both just in case
hehe, when in doubt, use both
god knows i'm not a css guy and not up on all the quirks and hacks you guys use to make things work
much thanks for the info "
oh
btw
i remembered i have a problem with IE on a site
IE _is_ the problem
http://www.severpress.ro - in the bottom of the page there are several pictures which are not shown … can anyone tell me why ?
can someone help me sexify a form?
i don't think it's css valid … not even xhtml
[domon]: http://www.formassembly.com/form-garden.php
I tried to look at serverpress.ro but it's taking 200 years to load
We are loked to ie @ school.
hmm
that's unfortunate
here it loads pretty fast
what connection do you have ?
cable
oh
usually get about 500-600k down
it's severpress.ro
not severpress
*server
okay, I see it in FF
are the images missing in IE
yeah
rather, which images?
you shouls see a line instead of an image
*should
okay, it's loading in IE
very, very slowly
in the bottom of the page .. under the rss feeds … there are some images with some politicians
ahhh I see
width="auto" doesn't work in IE
you should really resize those images with a graphics program rather than in the browser
if you must, you can use percents to get your desired effect
width="40%" height="40%"
that'll keep them in proportion
hmmm
I don't endorse that solution though they should really be resized properly
yeah .. i know .. but sometimes there is not enough time to do that
if you can't use percents, you could try height="*" but I'm not sure how IE/FF will be with that.
i've never heard or seen that method
Me either.
it's an old IE thing. it may not even work anymore
Here's hoping it doesn't!
I assume that FF will just ignore it
haha or to be reaaaally IE-specific, you could use expressions in your CSS to figure out the proper size of the image
has to finish today
expressions ?
yuck
he seem su be unaware of fact that css is static
IE will process javascript INSIDE of CSS files
you cant do math or logic
at least not directly
use your js externally
Is this still true with IE7?
i have a radiobox on the right of it a select box with 5 entries. how can i make it so that they are aligned at the top and not at the bottom?
oh that may be, I've never actually used them
i.e the select box should grow down not grow up
aton`: you can't control the direction that the select box draws its menu
thanks
aton`: it's going to grow where ever the OS says it can
haha
well not a menu
I would avoid expressions… it was more of a joke
Indeed
but the select box itself, i have size=5
so its fixed size
there is nothing popping up
Yes, that says how many items will show at once
oh, it doesn't draw at all?
yes it draws
but bottom-aligned with the radiobox
i need it to be top-aligned
otherwise it looks awful
at it looks like this:
check radio
check
ah no, this is what it should look like
but it looks like:
check
check radio
s/check/select/
check
can I get a bass check?
BOOM BOOM BOOM
aton`: I'm not really sure without seeing it
one second
http://aton.packetdropped.org/dd/fachauswahllayout.html
see the select boxes next to the thema and klausur radioboxes
they are on the same line but grow up instead of down
ohhhhh
try setting the vertical-align property of the containing div
vertical-align: top;
good idea
it's not drawing down, per se
it's just drawing and everything aligns to the bottom
rareedge, thanks
aton`: you're welcome
rareedge, doesnt work :/
You could use a table then put those things in cells and vertical-align: top; I know that'll work
Boo
i added vertical-align:top to the div id=abfrageinhalt
there's probably an equally crafty way to do it without tables
I'm just not willing to figure it out with your code
i'd like to avoid tables
the world should avoid tables, unless eating
is my code that bad?
no, I just can't figure it out right now
besides the language that you dont understand
haha
http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=VerticalAlign
I forgot that vertical-align doesn't apply to block-level elements
hm
could i use something else than div
?
not sure why you would
to use vertical align?
one sec
you could try a span
just cruise through these results. there's bound to be a solution there somehwere http://www.google.com/search?q=align%20vertical%20css
i could use a
http://www.css4you.de/example/vertical-align.html
rareedge, thanks but i can use google myself
sorry, just trying to help
I liked that bunch of results
oh actually… I'm signed on to google so my results would be totally different than yours
so that didn't make much sense to send
rareedge, it works now
not the containing div but the selectbox itself has to have vertical-align
oh sweet
is there a possibility to fit the selectboxes width to its contents width?
I don't think so
oh yes, by setting margin on the option tags inside the selectboxes
oh no doesnt work :/
it makes the options go off each other but not the box
yes it works
cool
maybe some one will have any usefull ideas
case is ..
ideas for?
i have a list , were if i add elements it at the begining grows up, but if element-count is larger then 5, it starts to expland below
any thouhgt on realization ?
oh no, still no good ideas
lol
that why i took my time to slowly tell .. there is noone usefull online at the moment
=P
someday, I hope to be useful
easy .. month or two in this channel while solving problems and you will be there
I am in need of a proficient javascript / ajax programmer, Is there a good help-wanted board for javascript developers?
ul.secondary a.active
and ul.secondary a:active
a.active means a class="active"
that is active"
(ie being clicked)
humm being clicked… ok.. so for the selected one (the current page for example, it'a a.active
what do you mean?
- it's no special option
I'm having trouble adding bullets to links I have (one for all, one for 'active' and the other for 'hover'
all and hover are working ok but the active does not work
You know what active means?
:P
well I want to change the color of the bullet for the selected tab
maybe it,s not active that I'm looking for then…
Probably not.
should be a special colour?
yeah something like that.. I'm using some tabs and I have three bullets, one for 'hover" the other is "default"…those two work fine
I need another one when the user is on a active tab
You need to define a special class or id for that, and add it manually on the a.
There's no way to do it automatically (well - without scripting)
http://www.geekomatik.com/home
seems to me that the classes are there, not sure how to call them
Nope, they've got 1 unique class for each link (which is pretty stupid)
what do you mean
I mean there's no way to tell which is the "active" page from those classes.
how can i style an image hosting using another button?
humm I thought I could just select a.active in my tabs css
hi how do i increase the spacing between my link's text and the line underneath it?
margin-bottom?
i'm referring to the actual link's underline
he
*hey
ah… I doubt there is a reliable cross-browser way to do that
a {text-decoration: none; padding-bottom: 10px; border-bottom: 1px solid blue;}
padding-bottom: 1px; looks proper
in fact even leaving out padding-bottom works just fine. it adds just a little gap which is exactly what i wanted
a {text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 1px solid blue;}
thanks anyway. cheerio
Hi guys. I define two sets of styles for paragraph, based on which object they are in. See code here: http://css.commctrl.com/96 - The paragraphs in the HTML use the styles from "#bd div.maincontent p" instead of "form.comment p" (regarding margins) ..
why?
has an ID = higher specificity (?)
I think.
]css specificity
http://w3.org/TR/CSS21/cascade.html#specificity
http://img.pro-g.co.uk/misc/exnor/dl_test.html — the one time Firefox is the problem! I've added no padding to the bottom here, and yet firefox is magically creating some
having a float:left value (the only way I can have the float push the container div down)
is put within the container, very odd…
]zip @ Exnor
Start every stylesheet with this: * { margin: 0; padding: 0; }. You'll save yourself the confusion over quite a few strange element and browser spacing differences later on. * == http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/selector.html#universal-selector
it's not the body padding
* applies to all elements
But yeah, that's not your problem.
this is just a test case
use a clear element instead of floating the container
I'm using a table to display some data. Can i make the border of a cell change color when the mouse hovers over it?
the problem is then that this container has a column on its left in the actual implementation
and I don't want it to clear that
td:hover {}
Doesn't work in IE, however.
So, use clear: right;
any way to make it work? :/
Might be a hover fix for IE…
clear has no effect here
to each td, but it'd be unsemantic and sucky.
seems float is the only way to get it clearing
You need to add a clear element below the float itself
thanks ZombieLoffe, that seems to work
fscan" then ctrl+space it will show me "fscanf"… what does this "
