does anybody here have suspend/hibernate working in a lenovo laptop ?
My livna driver for my video card (nvidia 6600Gt, running F7) does work very badly. I only get a framerate of ~10 where i used to have max to the 90 fps cap. This was on the driver from Nvidia.com. People recommended me to install the livna one, do you know a solution to make it work
better?
rpm.livna.org doesnt develop any driver. So please, dont refer to *nvidia* graphics driver by "nvidia driver".
the driver you got is the very same you can get from nvidia.com.
I mean the driver you get when you install it by Yum
by yum install kmod-nvidia
*I* know what you mean, and people here probably do. But I've seen some people writing "livna driver" on some non-fedora forums, and it leaded to many confusions. And to be exact, rpm.livna.org only do packaging. Si it's the real nvidia.com driver.
Huh thats kinda weird then because the driver from the Nvidia website gives me lots of fps on most things, but somehow cannot run beryl, that crashes, and the other driver, installed by yum does run beryl correctly but gives me horrible fps and makes other progs not run at all.
if you have installed the driver from both nvidia.com installer and through rpms, there is a conflict on your system.
the nvidia.com installer screws some things most of the time.
ah
so how can I remove that one completely?
that, I dont know.
I'm not using nvidia driver.
Maybe someone else does?
Do you think it will work if i remove that one?
you're going to have to undo everyting you've done and start over
So entirely reïnstall pc?
it does the same for me on my Nvidia cards
it's a bug in the Nvidia stuff.
re-installing the whole is not necessary.
Hey does anyone know if there is application to monitor gpu temp?
maybe you can find some procedure on the fedorasolved website.
lm_sensors
and Gkrellm
Anvil, okay ill try that
evil_steve, lm_sensors will not let me do 'sensors detect'
let me guess. you're not root ? -_-
nope as root it won'
giving it full path?
then try to give details, remember we dont read minds ?
Parse error in chip name 'detect
that's why I've gone back to basics and I just rely on Thumbsrews and Dental Pliers
in what order did you install thing? Livna's Nvidia packages, then the nvidia.com installer?
things*
Anvil, the error that i get is. "Parse error in chip name 'detect'"
are you up-to-date ?
nope running 'yum update' now
hi, anyone using festival?
lots of people around the world.
nevermind, i got the scottish one working
fedora 7, is that the same as fedora core 7 ?
no, it's fedora 7. There's no core nor extras any more. Just Fedora.
so, what i just installed is just 'fedora' ?
Straw, I first had the Nvidia one, on F6, then put the other in then upgraded to F7
btw it rocks, the first distro that gave less than any problems to get working ^^
i never thought that would ever happen
Someone found me btw a fedorasolved link to uninstalling the Nvidia.com driver
hmm, yum is still stuck at 'Reading repository metadata in from local files'
Anvil, well the thing is that i like to use 'smart' for managing my packages, but i dont know what 'channels' to add
so... you installed Livna's Nvidia packages on FC6, then the nvidia.com installer on FC6, then upgraded to F7?
or where to find channels for that matter
No in reverse, 1st the Nvidia.com
then the other and then upgrade
"not a smart user".
where does fedora store its Xconfig file
xorg.conf file. See the `man locate'.
though you shouldnt have to edit it.
correct anvil - where is it
its just, that all i see is stuff for fedora core 3 5 and 6
hmm...
For some reason, yum will not update..
in /etc/x11 isnt it
Any ideas?
and yes i am root
ok. i suggest you get the installer from nvidia.com and run it, letting it install. Then right after, sh nvidia.run --uninstall. then run 'yum remove "*nvidia*". After that, install the driver packages from Livna for F7
have you read the 'man locate' as adviced ? -_-
Straw, I have the Nvidia.com installed now, the other did work very bad, so can I now just use the sh nvidia.run --uninstall?
and the rest
nvidia.run is just an example
yes i know
http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/remove-nvidia-installer/
oh, and do I have to be in init 3 mode or just in init 5 like now?
yes, looks good
runlevel shouldn't matter. and be sure you reboot after repairing things
ok, thanks, Ill try it and hope it'll work
Anvil, yum is not updating for me, it is stuck at 'Reading repository metadata in from local files'
any suggestions
in the future, remember to remove one thing before trying another. otherwise you end up in the mess you've experienced
Yes thanks ill try. Ive got an error here btw
[root@localhost downloads]# rpm -ev --nodeps mesa-libGL
"mesa-libGL" specifies multiple packages
rpm -q mesa-libGL
mesa-libGL-6.5.2-10.fc7
2 of the same
hm
x86_64 install?
yes
try rpm -ev --nodeps --allmatches mesa-libGL
ok that did work
now just go on with the help manual
?
yes
ok it installs 2 packs now also
good
hello. about to embark on fedora core 7. I have a 10gig and a 20gig ext3 partition. Could /opt (about 500meg) /usr /tmp fit on the 10gig?
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-????-pkg0.run --uninstall ran fine?
good morning for all
http://rafb.net/p/1sa9eC72.html
yes
whats is happening with "yum" ?
straw it just gave me a semi-grahic Nvidia installer in terminal wich said "uninstalling nvivia driver succeeded"
ok good
hmm how do I uninstall the old drivers from yum?
exit
yum remove *nvivia* ?
*nvidia*
sure. it should find nothing hopefully
well the yum installer found them and could not install teh new
ok. remove them
should this one also be removed? xorg-x11-drv-nvidia x86_64 100.14.11-1.lvn7 installed 15 M
yes
ok
ok straw thx for the help, now ill cross my thumbs and reboot
no, not yet
once the yum remove completes, follow http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/nvidia-yum-livna
yes i have done that
oh, ok. carry on
I wont need to edit the xorg.conf?
no, that should happen automagically
ok thanks, bye
hm. system-settings.menu and server-settings.menu seem to pull in entries they shouldn't
wine and google-desktop in particular
is there a guide to configure fedora 7 for bitorrent?
meng for serving torrents?
nah, the usual downloading of stuff
yum install bittorrent;bittorrent-curses some.torrent
i've only used it to download vmware appliances, but i expect to work pretty much the same with any content
more like i need to open holes in the firewall for the forwarding thing
used to do it well in windows, but FC is still new to this ubuntutard
Jippi I'm in Need a littlebit of help with my PDA (HTC P4350).........please....
what firewall?
the built in one
1009 -j ACCEPT to
iptables?
Does anyone know how I can get around the "Reading repo from local files" on yum?
yah, coz the the gui firewall thing is not saving my settings
"yum clean all"
ok
but it will then read them in once it has them cached
meng you dont need to punch any holes
change udp to tcp for line 2, and add them just after the lines for --dport 631
got that math feeling somewhere...
how on earth to do that?
you dont need to
did you try it out yet?
works, but crappy speeds
right, because no one can connect to you
0 upload speeds
using ktorrent btw
yeah, i need something for my nonexistent upload capacity
i've upload speed
kthx
lol
alright. if the above is too difficult, do yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update system-config-securitylevel system-config-securitylevel-tui
Straw, the driver does work but i still have very bad framerates
but how can i check if my ports are fowarded in linux, coz i used to use utorrent's port check
thanks, but i gotz speed and uploads now
oh, alright
slow fps in what?
well in Wolfenstein Et i didd test it
strawany idea how to check for port fowarding? coz i want to double check my setup
hm, no not familiar with port forwarding really
but glxgears do give me about 5000-6000 fps
try fooling around with the game settings
what's the fps in Wolfenstein?
about 10-30
the driver isn't an issue now
I used to have max to my 90 cap with other driver
in Wolfenstein?
yes
hm. anyone else got the same issue?
got any other games you could try?
Guild wars in cedega
but thats on my other user so ill have to logout
first that did not work at all with this driver, and very good with Nvidia.com driver
look in Wolfenstein's directory for any libGL files
ok
Anyone here into PDA's and Fedora?
Can I ask, what does PAM and Kerberos do?
authentication
straw, Are they essential?
pretty much
yes, unless you like getting jacked
straw, Both of them
yes
Straw, there doesnt seem to be any libGL file in there
ok. open Wolfenstein's cfg file
ok
look for any mention of libGL
erm, any guru bcm4318 guru? as I can't find the solution for "ndiswrapper device wlan0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization."
hmm the etconfig.cfg is only about keybinds and that sort of settings
found it
seta r_glDriver "libGL.so.1" unsafe
try removing that line
make a backup of that file first
hmm it says not to edit the file, its generated by et
hmm, I could spread that quit message virus around, but I never /quit
... Irssi uptime: 51d 18h 2m 17s ...
don't worry about that
ive got a config file for myself maybe i can put the line there with safe
how can you put in a quit message btw, im using opera with irc
it's finding mesa's libGL i think
so just delete it?
yup. after backing up the file
ok now ill test
PAM is the Authentication backend for most apps and services. If you don't want or need to log in, you can safely remove it.
evil_steve, your okay thanks ill keep it
hmm its still about the same
look at the cfg again
has the libGL line been re-added?
yes, now on a different place
maybe i can put a line that its safe in or so
or in my own config file?
is anyone using encrypted partitions in here?
add the full path the nvidia's libGL, iirc
so seta r_glDriver "/usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1" safe or whatnot
Is the font system in F7 better? Seems so to me..
what is kernel after F7 install, and what is kernel up to now?
2.6.21 and 2.6.21
no updates as of yet..kuel
3194 from install and 3228 after update..
Yes, there is an update.
you update it by cdl or in the gui?
yum update
ok
Straw, how can i find that pat?
path you mean? run updatedb as root, then locate libGL.so.1 as your user
hey folks
does anyone know of guides for installing / configuring gfs?
the path to my nvidia libGL
im sorry, ive to go now straw, thanks for the help with installing teh driver, bye
ah crap ... clickling on ReleaseNotes during installation seems to have frozen the install process
i can still catrl-atl-f2 to an sh# prompt
possible to get it to continue fomr here?
or see some error log of what the heck happened
Is kerberos an essential package?
Unable to load image-loading module libxbufloader-xpm.so (no such file or dir). Caused by release_notes.py:247
I installed the cluster suite, and just launched it, a dialogue box appears with "unknown error"
any ideas?
!fonts
how can I install true type fonts in fc7?
is there a msttcorefonts package/
?
no, there's not such a package in fedora. Though the liberation font package should provide similar set of fonts.
oh ok how can download it.
using yum?
the package name is liberation-fonts
thanks pal !
any how on how I install them ?
howto I mean
yum install liberation-fonts
fonts
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/yum/en/
richee man yum
how can i add a server knetworkmanager to a startuo/
startup*
service
hello, how can i hear with amarok mp3s? (FC7)
there's http://avi.alkalay.net/linux/docs/font-howto/Font.html as well
do you consider fedora the best host desktop linux?
yes!
can we help you?
there is msttcorefonts, but not in official repos
sdodson, how can i add a service knetworkmanager to a startup?
i'm looking for a good secure linux web hosting distribution for desktop
oh cool on livna repos?
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f7.html#ttf
i've used netbsd, freebsd, debian, ubuntu
metbsd, different strokes for different folks
metbsd, i have used ubuntu and opensuse and i like fedora better then both
the Liberation fonts are totally unhinted, so not awesome. DejaVu is the best hinted free sw font collection I have seen.
hello, how can i hear with amarok mp3s? (FC7)
PampersBomba, u need gstreamer packages
what do you make of Liberation?
Then the Type1 autohinter is much better than the TTF one, so using good Type1 fonts helpd too. There are quite a few free ones.
ed1t, ah okay
some ppl define "best desktop distro" by how many media codecs there is out of the box
we like it, give it a try, if you have problems come back and ask, otherwise we're not interested in debate here.
so i'm downloaidng fedora, is there netinstall cd for fedora?
PampersBomba, go to http://livna.sf.net and download livna
PampersBomba, and then get gstreamer-ugly, bad and 1 more i forgot
ed1t, i have livna
ed1t, thx
VileGent, thx 2
so far it is an alpha release... Without hinting TTF fonts are pretty ugly. Also I am not sure where to gind the sources for the Liberation fonts. If it were not for the metric compatibility I would rather recommend DejaVu (whioch is anyhow tghe Fedora default now).
is fedora come with kde?
it has both
yes, and quite recent too and there is KDE-RedHat.org too
i only want kde
http://WWW.sabi.co.UK/Notes/linuxFonts.html with some pointers to nice free fonts.
how do I install depmod? using yum perhaps?
i have good hints about good fonts in linux
copy the windows true type fonts, those are best
roentgen, should already be installed
it should be installed by default as the modutils are absolutely essential.
command not found
"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su --login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.
fedora 7 here
fedora is a long way from a desktop experience hey
if you don't fint it, it may be in '/sbin' or '/usr/sbin'
it's part of the base system. you need to switch to the root user "su -"
you mean fedora is very nice?
no, I really like it
yeah....I'm not that n00b
I did that already
Is 512MB good enough to run fc7?
I am running fedora on 256 MB and the UI is very slow
entertainment wise, all those things you take for granted.. its lacking. not a direct fault of fedora though
a bit short.
depends on your video card too
512 is good?
my laptop has a intel 9xxx card
said "a bit short"
I'm using 512 with a ati 9200, its software rendering due to no driver. its quick enough
brb
k
make sure you have module-init-tools but you should definitely have this already
quik_ is wrong. It's hardware rendering. The X11 free driver fully supports radeon 9200.
hmm no fedora mirror in china..
bleah "su -"
that did it
command not found

^^
i think we are coming up with a fedora mirror in beijing
yeah I got from there thanks
no fedora mirror in china, that's quite crazy
how do i add knetworkmanager to start automatically?
so i need a dvd?

how do i add an application to startup list?
ed1t, put it on your panel

eugene so where are you
VileGent, wat panel?
Ù/ì(¬„forums (translation: this is the forum host we setup in beijing)
Singapore.
i'm in china
let me know if you have difficulty downloading the DVD. I can try to mail you a copy, or get my colleagues in Beijing to mail you one.
but those rpms need to be updated when they are here
the above link refers to the details about setting up a fedora mirror in China. it's still work-in-progress. stay tuned.
there's a minor bug with knetworkmanager - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=242538
as long as the mirror is setup, it shouldn't matter anymore
cp /usr/share/applications/fedora-knetworkmanager.desktop ~/.kde/Autostart/knetworkmanager-autostart.desktop should do it
because latest rpms will be added in the mirror site?
i will talk to my colleagues about it.
not having a chinese mirror sure surprised me, even debian has one
all it takes is an effort.
and everyone needs to start somewhere.
so if i dl the dvd iso, save it on a usb hard drive, i can install from that without burning it?
email me your mailing address.
it's ok eugene, thanks
worry not
ok
With the VLC package in livna, does the mozilla plugin come included does anyone know?
IIRC it is a separate package
vote for bob
Bob-Laptop, Do you know the site to search for rpms? Cause it doesnt come as part of the livna repo
Bob-Laptop, Is it rpmfind.net?
yum search string
tweak the debug level as needed
yum -d 0 search string
Bob-Laptop, Do what?
RTFM while you are at it
o_o
Hello Bob.
mozilla-vlc is the package you seek
Bob-Laptop, Ahh i was looking the other way round, thanks
yum -d 0 search vlc found it for me
Bob-Laptop, Couldnt run it just, got yum running already
Bob-Laptop, Downloading some stuff
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/yum/ will help you a lot
does FC7 support wpa-psk authentication method?
no
oh damn
FC7 does not exist
Bob-Laptop, Thanks
are Intel video drivers included in fedora? (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2159&OSFullName=Linux*&lang=eng&strOSs=39&submit=Go%21)
yes
Bob-Laptop : are you trying so say something?
Bob-Laptop: I mean propietary
what proprietary drivers?
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2159&OSFullName=Linux*&lang=eng&strOSs=39&submit=Go%21
he's just being pedantic; for Fedora 7 the "Core" part of the name was dropped
oh ... he's that kind
roentgen_, Well I only found a way to use WEP, didnt bother with WPA
i'm pretty sure those are GPLed
my video is the Intel 82G965 integrated chipset it is supported by Fedora Core 7 out of the box
seems I found something called wpa_supplicant
Fedora 7, there is no Core,
i have a GMA950 card, also supported out of the box
I have an nVidia 8400m G card it is not supported by anything but the vesa driver
Bob-Laptop : there's no core whatsoever in linux, just a loose set of apps
right, it's not like there's a set of core utils or anything
oh wait, there is
^^
Bob-laptop: doh I forgot they merged the core with extras this release
Fedora dropped core this release. :-
Must have had some coffee
I think you are right about +-GPLed "COPYING GPL license agreement for patches"
bI think you are right about +-GPLed "COPYING GPL license agreement for patches"/b
at any rate, the drivers they include in F7 perform well enough
I'm on the way already ;-)
the release notes for that tarball talk about some quite old versions of X including Xfrr86
Xfree
Is that the pirate version?
yup yup
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
hello
I was hoping the black window stuffems with Beryl might be fixed in F7.. ah well
who's the factoid bot ?
no bots here
speak for your self carbon based lifeform
LOL
lol
but you're still not a factoid bot, right?
I think you are looking for #Fedora-Last-Resort
So did you have something other than a bot you were looking for?
These are not the bots you were looking for

Wow.. 240M logfile for this channel

Oh, hahahaa, I didn't even look.
so its gnome's icons?
use Konqueror if you want a KDE browser
KDE doesnt have a functionality like FF
I love KDE, but I can't use Konq for more than 10 minutes

you might find a Crystal them for it or something

all those are in it
adblock, gestures, and delicious are all supported by konqueror

Oh, heh, no wonder it's unstable.
actually it should work fairly well. it's compiled against wine, not a native windows executable iirc

there's the other evil. f-spot
That's just slacking.. Not even bothering to go the next step.. f-spot
hi
hai
how do i see how much space is left on my HDD
df
df -h is nicer -h stands for human readable
df -h for the human-readable version
Just in case you didn't know, try df -h
i prefer df -k because it also works on other *nix*
if you want something shiny try kdiskfree
Um.. The default is -k really...
Unless you have small drives I guess
Khaytsus the default is probably -b
I would use df -h
Try it.. /bin/df vs /bin/df -k
(just to make sure no aliases are in the way
but i always get lost with them blocks
maybe there is an alias set for df?
its the same if your blocksize is 1K
That's it I guess
F00BaR`: Do you have another question?
it used to be 512b
F00BaR`: Did your earlier question get answered?
maybe i do have small disks
how does one get libstdc++.so.5 installed ... the compat-gcc-c++ doesn't seem to include it
It's okay.. You want me to forward some anti spam filter webmail host that might 'help' there?
Oh, wait
I have a USB drive that I want to always be automounted. The drive is ntfs and I currently do: mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdf /media/OneTouch -o auto, hotplug, defaults. However the drive is not always guaranteed to be sdf. So when I add this command to fstab how can it be sure that it will
automount???
yum provides libstdc++.so.5
It's *never* /dev/sdf
Khaytsus im protected...
sorta
Khaytsus, hold up i see it. thanks
Khaytsus, it is right now
/dev/sdf1 maybe
it could be
you cannot be sure, you *must* match by UUID or by volume name.
Khaytsus, nope, it is /dev/sdf
o_O
You can format a raw disk with no partitions
Hmm, I guess.. I wouldn't think that's typical.
EvilBob, which one
i had a few
how do i see how much space is left on my HDD"
df -h
lol
Khaytsus, if I run fdisk -l I see four partitions with warnings but I mount as /dev/sdf.. The drive is only one partition. It is actually a Maxtor OneTouch 1.5TB set up as RAID1 with ntfs. I don't know why linux sees 4 partitions
F00BaR`: followed by 30 of us answering you
how many people said it hehehe
yeah
but uhm
im still not sure
F00BaR`: and you feeling so entitled did not even say thank you, I assumed you still had a problem other than the obvious.
http://rafb.net/p/zAoD1V55.html
My problem is that I want to automount my NTFS SB HDD
My problem is that I want to automount my NTFS USB HDD
odd... Just never seen that in normal use, but never heard of raid on a thumb drive either, except people screwing around.
Khaytsus, thumb drive!! this is a 1.5TB drive
not all USB drives are thumb drives
Just as not all thumbs are green
some are black and blue
can anyone help me get it to automount with out relying on the device
also can anyone explain why fdisk's output is so strange
http://rafb.net/p/zAoD1V55.html
I mean, why does it report 4 partitions and warnings
Anyone know how to get my Boardcom 1309 to connect faster then 11MB
Oh, doh...
Dunno why I read in thumb drive
connect to a newer AP not that old "B" AP you have
we have a g router
I have a 40G photo dump drive that's USB, it's definately got partitions..
Back to fc6?
Khaytsus, yeah but in windows my disk only has one partition, but why does fdisk think that it has 4
Khaytsus I got it working in FC6
actually is anyone here en expert on fdisk and mount?
fdisk -l and put it on pastebin, curious
Khaytsus, I did didd#t you see it http://rafb.net/p/zAoD1V55.html
Oh
Damn iwl3945 still only gets 9mbit after updating kernel
I think I'm still gonna go back to ipw3945
I got 22-23 out of it
Khaytsus, I use ipw3945, works great for me
Khaytsus, the only thing is that NetworkManager asks for my keyring password everytime...
bloody annoying
nfi
I have iwl4965, hopefully it will be supported someday
Use wpa_supplicant.. the key has nothing to do with the driver
Khaytsus, wpa_supplicant is a piece of crap..Network Manager is much nicer
Is there any way I can install fedora 7 in text mode from a live cd ?
the linux text doesn't work
erm....... I don't touch it at all, it "Just works"
Sounds like NetworkManager is a POS if it can't store a PSK
Khaytsus, it's just that it uses the gnome keyring
Config file just has network= { ssid="ssid" and psk="password" } for each network I use.
And it automatically does it
Khaytsus, I have given it permission to allow access, but still it annoys me with for the keyring password
text mode live cd ????
Khaytsus, tried that wpa_supp just wasn't reliable for me. NM works everytime though
Ah well.. I never have to touch it, it just works. I wish I could figure out how to get onto our corp network at work with it, but it's a very wacky combination of stuff I can't seem to figure out.
Khaytsus, do you use WPA2 with both crypt types?
Cisco with 80211x, mschap2, ttls
wpa2 is pointless, I just use wpa
wpa at home, wpa somewhere else, wep at one other place.. All "Just work"
Online as soon as I get into X
This was on FC6, I assume it hasn't broken... heh... Upgraded to F7 Friday night
or THursday.. Foret
Khaytsus, why pointless
does anyone know if this is something to be concerned about (from fdisk) Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
Second defition of pointless.. Ineffectual
Khaytsus, explain
Why would I need to explain the definition of pointless?
Khaytsus, i mean why do you think that WPA2 is pointless. man ou are hard wotrk
Might ound dumb, but can VESA driver support videos etc?
yeah is sounds dumb
EvilBob, Well can they ^^?
seeing that it is a VIDEO CARD DRIVER
EvilBob Thank you
and thanks to everyone else
does anyone know if this is something to be concerned about (from fdisk) Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
is there a danger my data could be corrupted
send the drive here I will check it out
EvilBob, ok, what's you address
So is that one of the 3-drive enclosures?
Could be 2 now I guess...
or 4
Khaytsus, eh!
1.5TB drive, I assume it's one of the external enclosures.. Was curious
it shouldn't be a problem.
Khaytsus, it is two 750GB drives can be RAID0 or RAID1
My fedora 7 live cd doesn't show up the gui gnome. So, it there any way I coul debug this issue or install in text mode?
sdodson, thanks man. I suppose it could just be fdisk getting confused because its a large drive
it throws some error
sdodson, do you know how to mount by label and not device, i tried LABEL= but i don't think that ntfs-3g supports this
I don't trust labels.. Just me.
is the ntfs partition labeled?
how do i find out where Mozilla is installed
rpm -qil mozilla
F00BaR`: It's likely not installed, however. Firefox is default.
Firefox sorry
yes
im trying to install flash player
for firefox
sdodson, iirc I gave it a name when i formatted it in windows. how can i check this in linux?
how can i find firefox
F00BaR`: macromedia.mplug.org has rpms
F00BaR`: don't bother manually installing it
Or install it in your local ~/.firefox
I forget where that is.. I use my own Firefox. Fedora fscked up the Firefox RPM last I tried it
EvilBob, I know you'll go made...but Im running VESA driver now, and for some reason cant view wmvs/mpgs...I thought it maybe would have something to do with them?
F00BaR`, make sure you are using 32-bit firefox as there is no 64-bit flash player
lots of bobs
works fine here
EvilBob, Ahh okay,
EvilBob, Must just be stupid VLC
In other words, Shafto doesn't have the codecs installed.
i would make sure you hve the proper codecs
EvilBob, VLC Claims to support them all, and downloaded a shed load of codecs too
vlc covers a lot of ground, but my god it's ugly and klunky.
Shafto F00BaR` http://fedorasolved.org/
Is there anything i can do to make this download faster?
I do NOT use vlc btw
"this"
EvilBob, Mplayer?
you could try mplayer
kplayer
kaffeine
xine
wolsni, Does mplayer work with all the codecs in the guide on fedorasolved?
*
I've only found ONE format mplayer won't do.. And you'll never see it, so.
Install mplayer and then isntall the win32 codecs..
i need to find the path to firefox's installation dir
Khaytsus, Okay, Mplayer have a mozilla plugin toodont it?
Is there an rpm for the codecs anywhere? Otherwise, they're easy to download and install.
I dunno
F00BaR`: INSTALL THE RPM AS TOLD
HOW
hello, does anyone use ntfsclone? part of ntfsprogs
RTFM
!caps | Khaytsus
2 AndyCap | F00BaR`: macromedia.mplug.org has
http://fedorasolved.org/browser
Have not used NTFS in about 3 years
wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/flash-plugin-9.0.31.0-release.i386.rpm
rpm flash*
?
so far the answer is "no one uses that"
rpm flash-plugin-9.0.31.0-release.i386.rpm
Ok, i can't take this, someone wanna help me setup my broadcom 1309 with ndiswrapper
Khaytsus, Thanks, and i found a plugin too
EvilBob yeah most people don't, even those in ntfs channel
ntfs has a channel?
Is there a urxvt patch or something that I can use to get colors in there?
now that is sad, do they have a suicide hotline also?
EvilBob linux-ntfs has a channel #ntfs
rpm -ivh flash-plugin-9.0.31.0-release.i386.rpm ?
that right?
F00BaR`: http://fedorasolved.org/browser
RTFM
Ah there, alright so is there a way to get urxvt to use my bashrc to get colors? I got colors working in gnome-terminal for my bash prompt, but not for urxvt
maybe you could ask in a channel where urxvt users hang out?
No urxvt users here?
I think I saw both of them down the hall on the right
how many have even heard of urxvt in here
not me
and tyler-wylie asking about it does not count as "hearing about it"
There is an IRC channel for discussion on irc.freenode.net #rxvt-unicode.
population 2?
22
I was close
So much urxvt hate though, sad times indeed.
what is better for Fedora, KDE, Gnome or Xfce?
depends on what you like
they probably have not said anything in the channel in years
wolsni, what is the package manager?
yum
TWM4Lyfe
not twm :s
twm
and has it a graphical interface?
several
yes, but the ones I've used have been slow compared to the CLI
wolsni, and is it Qt or Gtk?
both
or either, I should say
yumex is pretty sporty these days
yumex is probably the nicest yum frontend, it uses GTK
"please wait up to 24 hours for a response to your question!"
so, Fedora is better with Gnome or Xfce ^^
I know
sad times for urxvt in fedora
well, Gnome is the default
TWM4Lyfe
but it's not like Fedora sabotages the other packages
heh, I'm sure you can find someone who thinks so.
basically, the answer to your question is "try it and see what you like"
Everyone should use TWM
tyler-wylie: so?
terminals are a dime a dozen
it will give you a better sense of reality when you go back to your DE of choice
tyler-wylie: you already said you have a terminal doing what you want, so what's the problem?
use TWM for a couple months, all of a sudden gnome and KDE don't suck so much
is Fedora maintained by RH??
partially. redhat participates a lot in the fedora project.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Overview
soooo ... whos responsible for the missing "If you have an ATI card, DO NOT INSTALL F7" warning in the release notes
omg, the doubt still persist, F7 or OpenSuse?
just don't use fglrx and things should be fine?
you could try out the fedora live cds, maybe that would help your decision
and you can install straight from the livecd
ATI are responsible.
AndyCap, oh i know
go run windows you freaking troll
so why do you ask? F7 works fine with my ATI cards
hmm.. fedora or opensuse.. asked in #fedora.. I wonder how I should respond.
AndyCap, not here. vesa, nor ati
although i jsut updated
so we'll see
depending you your definition of "works:
Windows
tried radeon driver?
EvilBob, well, opensuse won
pehaps better to look at the ATI cards part.
jamonation, will try in a sec
well, some say that redhat is less evil than novell because redhat does not currently have plans to sell their soul to msft.
Linux used to be Linux, we did not need msft
some people say, some people say, if i wanted fox news, I'd turn on the tv
xinerama work with vesa?
some of us still don't
I don't have any msft products on my network
I use wine, but that is not a microsoft product
how can i share a linux path on the network so that windows machines can access it?
samba..
install SFU on the windows machines
then use NFS
SFU?
http://google.com/
o
k
m
a
t
e
don't do that
it annoys ppl
really!
that is a quick way to get banned
EvilBob, ok relax
is there any way to trace old packages installed on my f7 ?
Good Evening Anvil
what do you mean?
hrm no widescreen with vesa either
kbuildsysoca from kde is crashing after i upgraded to f7 , and someone at kde told me that is because of old packages still installed inside f7
Works fine on my nVidia card
EvilBob, hush you!
everything works with nvidia
heh
nvidia didn't work on my beryl in f7
but works perfect in fc6
Some day my card will be supported by some other driver than vesa
"Found not compatible window manager. Waiting..."
Does anyone here know what the "extra timer interrupt" is? On my laptop it causes 980 interupts per minute and I wanted to know how I can prevent this? powertop mentions something about hpet kernel patch, does Fedora have this? (My chipset is much too old to support this)
how can i mount a linux path on machine machine to a linux path on another machine? do i use NFS?
yes, it's the easiest way
I would use NFS, you could use samba
to see whether you have packages installed that aren't provided by any enabled repositories, you can use the package-cleanup tool in the yum-utils package
yum install system-config-nfs
lets try this radeon driver...
yum-utils ?
then read the mount and fstab man pages
it's a package
I plan to set the path up as samba for my windows machines, so in this case should i just use samba on my other linux box as well or is nfs better?
or just use samba since itt's a little easier to setup
so i can install yum-utils by yum itself ?
of course
IMO NFS is better for both Linux and windows
EvilBob, would you mind qualifying that statement?
installing...
after it's installed, "package-cleanup --orphans"
done with it , so what should i do after it ? just 'yum-utils' on console ?
^^
;p
I don't run a windows focused network, I run Linux focused network. as a result i run Linux native utilities
how if yum-utils clean up the packages which i still need it ?
package-cleanup doesn't remove anything, it just lists packages
EvilBob, i read you. so it would seem that the optimal solution is setup dependent
even client sites with more Windows clients than Linux clients I still use NFS
poor clients
yup
http://rafb.net/p/yLAZsD96.html
so how much is your E&O insurance?
heh
EvilBob, for me it's much more simple. I have a ps3 running linux with a big USB drive. I want to share that with my linux/windows laptops
NFS - Need for Speed ? ;p
looks like you have a lot of packages that are orphaned
Ummmm sure
i guess so sir , i'm using f7 since fc1
never do clean install , just upgrading from one version to other
many of those packages are from FC5
I simply got sick of samba long ago so went with a solution that was easier to manage
easier for me any how
anisfarhana, is NFS quicker than samba? samba definitely has the nicer sounding name
i don't need NFS or samba
EvilBob, is NFS quicker than samba? samba definitely has the nicer sounding name
sshfs +1
orphans.txt
I have never bench marked it, NFS is faster to set up
i have done with yum update several times
again faster for me to set up
well thanks
then open up orphans.txt in the editor of your choice and remove any packages that you need to keep
then "yum remove $(cat orphans.txt)"
would you agree in any "high end" dual core desktop machine that the hard drive is the limiting factor?
me and a friend are trying to figure this out
that's been the case for most applications for quite a while
wolsni, word.
I want to subscribe to the mailing list of fedora
but of course it always depends what you're doing
your ability to point and click is the limiting factor :p
how can I get the list of mailing lists
Disk I/O has been the ottleneck for several years now
bottleneck for what?
haha it's safe to say i wasn't blowing steam out my keister
moving data
LOL
that is too risky for me :-S
well, duh.
LOL
go with a clean install then
thanks guys ^_^
but say for instance decoding h.264 and whoops. your harddisk is doing just fine.
that is a problem too , i have a lots of important data under /home
im going to buy new hdd (sata) soon , install clean f7 on it
if you don't have a backup that *IS* a problem
Even in large databases Disk I/O is a killer
how much ram you have in the box?
AndyCap were you ever on another network?
sorry sir , at first , im using fedora to see how linux works , but after that im falling in love with fc
I love you long time hehe.
umm, yes, but that's still moving data around
you might be able to fix it with just "yum remove kde\*; yum install kdebase kdenetwork kdepim" (adjust for what you want)
good, good. :
Yeah he hangs on "off.brandchips.com"
no no lol
i will think about it soon , i don't want to screw up my kde+fc again
are you familiar with beryl ?
beryl is fun
most of us have been around the internet long enough that your question can only be answered with "maybe, maybe not"
beryl is fun , but i can't use it after upgrading to f7
ATI card?
"do you have a gun?"
Nvidia GeForce FX5200
yes
if the answer is yes then my answer is "Nope I am new to IRC"
i have done with uninstall and install the nvidia drivers via yum , but it's still failed
EvilBob are you AndyCap ?
My point is you need to be more clear
hi
yes just about EVERY ONE of us has been on another network
having problems with the live-cds
#fedora-livecd
:o
What kind of problem?
sdodson / wolsni : http://rafb.net/p/sQnha815.html
stops in ISOLINUX
don't even get the grub-menu:|
tried reburning several times
luser32, a bad ISO then i'd 'spose
once it worked, but then the image was corrup
and you are using the KDE image and burning it to a CD?
I have tried both
just for kicks, why don't you try "dcopquit kdesktop" before starting beryl?
nope, not bad iso
works to boot up in vmware
eh...
well the KDE image does not fit on a CD
had the same problem when I tried beta4
hmm ok , will do it now
I am not using the cde-cds now
you verified the sha1sum
http://rafb.net/p/WaW6Ii39.html
but after some time it fineally worked with test4, but now the final, GNOME-cds doesnt work eiher
any ideas?
Sounds like you have special hardware
noop, same for all 4 pcs
hi, in vsftpd, how do i add / remove users
and I mean short bus special
and in vmware, booting the iso works, booting the cds doesnt
looks odd to me, maybe try again after you do a fresh install
come here and do fresh install for me ;p
what are you paying?
anisfarhana, you have fingers (obviously), use them
hmmm...1 dvd with f7 on it
no thanks then
anisfarhana, pay him with hard drives
hi, in vsftpd, how do i add / remove users
okay , 40 GB Seagate 7200 RPM IDE ?
hope he will like it
anisfarhana, i'd do it for a 40 gigger
where do you live? :P
anisfarhana, what you after?
F00BaR`: he's been yum upgrading since FC1 and his system could really use a fresh install
i just can't use it anymore , all the ide is full , looking for sata hdd
ill do it for a 40 if you live close
ping
i think
F00BaR`: trust me she does not live cose
close
ok guys , i just kidding about it , i can do fresh install clean on f7 , but before , i need to backup my /home first
where she live
F00BaR`: other side of the pacific
mars?
oh
wow
have fun :P
F00BaR`: deal to come here ? 40 GB waiting for ya
quack quack
anisfarhana no, i could buy 3 with the money id have to pay for flights
should be pretty easy to do yourself, especially from the livecd
btw, does anyone know how to add/remove users from vsftpd
hmm..ok put this way , if i buy new sata hdd , can i still use data from old linux hdd to work on ?
F00BaR`: IT'S A TRAP!
once upon a time when 80GB were just coming out in EIDE drives, this guy told me $20 for my 40GB drive... or $0.50/GB....
you can mount multiple drives simultaneously
i told 'em he was crazy
lool
how about run linux apps using my old hdd ? possible ?
now people do jobs and take hdds as payment. wha happened?
LOL
5-6 years ago I was looking for the cheapest drive locally I could find because one was DYING fast on my server.. Local store wanted something like $80 for a used 20G drive.
F00BaR`: none of that now O_o
sorry, later?
Khaytsus, nice! exactly! they weren't $0.50/GB!
well, no.... ahem
get a room
Mmm.... http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.8027a91c954924ae4bda9f30eac4f0a0/
well if i can solve this kbuildsysoca and beryl , i don't need to do fresh install
EvilBob, this is our room
anisfarhana, you could always keep /home on the 40GB
F00BaR`: This is not #newbs
LOL
you should be able to run executables as long as you have read and execute permissions, although you would probably need to tweak environment variables if apps are in nonstandard locations
Dreamers may leave, but we're here... everafter..
does anyone know how to add/remove users from vsftpd
then i should looking for new hdd sata to install fresh f7 on it
pkz
Khaytsus, dude... i'm a dreamer too... i jsut got here
really, your system has a mixture of FC5, FC6, F7, and third-party rpms, a fresh install is a really good idea
Oops, baby fussing. bbb
agree sir
anisfarhana, yeah... that's not good
pkz
does anyone know how to add/remove users from vsftpd
grr
i thought "upgrading" will eliminate all old packages from old version
Doesn't it use the system users by default?
no
i tried that
it wont let me log in
F00BaR`, vsftpd uses system users by default
F00BaR`, did you change that?
no
F00BaR`, well then it's using system sers
but i tried logging in after adduser
F00BaR`, did you set a password with passwd?
yep
wolsni / downhillgames / EvilBob : well , thanks a lot because of your consultation
Does anyone have any suggestions about applications I should install for a laptop?
anisfarhana, sure. hope all goes smooth ^_^
all of them
hopefully
really i just "walked in" on the discussion and nodded my head but eh!
F00BaR`, increase the log level in vsftpd and check the logs while you log in
EvilBob, what apps?
all of them
F00BaR`, check the logs after you try to log in
God Fedora 7 is 99% away from perfect for me, if only urxvt functioned correctly
what's the next best terminal to URxvt
tyler-wylie, you sure you meant to say away from perferct?
You know what I mean!
Well, mrxvt is undergoing review ATM.
how can i mount a samba share? I don't have smbmount and I have tried mount -t smbfs xxxxx but it complains about smbfs not recognised
-t cifs
smbfs has been deprecated long long time ago
ah ok thanks
EvilBob, is there a GUI app to scan for APs
several
zzzoid, works like a charm(cifs_ ddi it yesteday
http://rafb.net/p/iK82wm34.html
NetworkManager, NetGo, kwifimanager the list goes on and on
look at that
ok
yum search wifi
yum search wireless
pembo13_com, i have now used cifs, but it is asking me for a password! but the in the smf.conf the share is marked public
zzzoid, do you have a username/password?
pembo13_com, for the source ?
zzzoid, pass it the guest guesstion
-o guest
Does anyone know if there is a guide to speed up the boot process?
pembo13_com, permisson denied
zzzoid, have you connected to this share at all before
?
i can access it via firefox using smb://xxxxxx/share no problems
but mounting is asking for a password, i have tried -o guest no joy
http://rafb.net/p/iK82wm34.html
zzzoid, if you don't mind, pass the command you're using
look at that
F00BaR`: why?
that proves it doesnt use system users
F00BaR`, check the logs on the machine, it should give more information
mount -t cifs //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/media /media/OneTouch -o guest
or
mount -t cifs //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/media /media/OneTouch
pembo13_com, i dont know where the logs are
F00BaR`, /var/log/messages /var/log/vsftpd and /var/log/secure
ty Arthur
F00BaR`, no prob
/var/log/vsftpd: No such file or directory
zzzoid, zzzoid try tputting in the user= option to
zzzoid, use what ever user you had firefox running as
/var/log/vsftpd: No such file or directory
zzzoid, the server has to be set to "share" mode in order to use no password
by default it's on "server" meaning a valid username/password needs to be used...
downhillgames, but then how come firefox can access the share
zzzoid, hax.
try setting it to "share"
downhillgames, ok, which section
zzzoid, smb.conf i believe
or use the GUI tools
downhillgames, in global?
pembo13_com, theres nothing in any of the other 2 and there is no /var/log/vsftpd
i can't remember what section. it should already have "server" entered
zzzoid, global would make sense
downhillgames, do you know the exact setting?
F00BaR`, /var/log/vsftpd.log
i eliminated my home network a while ago, zzzoid
ok, well actually how can i specify a user in mount
/var/log/vsftpd.log: No such file or directory
zzzoid, http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/examples/smb.conf
zzzoid, o password=,user=
but that's passing it in the command line....
F00BaR`, aight, take a look at the vsftp options, not sur ewhy this is being such a prob, http://vsftpd.beasts.org/vsftpd_conf.html
or username= it's been a while
chere is vsftpd.conf
where
F00BaR`, /etc/vsftpd/
downhillgames, it works! thanks. I set security=share in global
in that directory
zzzoid, np
# Uncomment this to allow local users to log in.
local_enable=YES
that how it should be?
zzzoid, Windohs uses "share" by default
zzzoid, it's much fun to get on wireless at my friend's appartment and start printing stuff to their printers like "secure your wireless connection"
local_enable=YES
thats already enabled
Khaytsus, ^ :P sounds like something you'd do
pembo13_com
downhillgames, indeed. My home net is protected with WPA2 though. However, would the share be accessable from over the network or would my router prevent it?
downhillgames, I meant over the internet
zzzoid, it would be accessable if somebody was able to attach to your network.
through WPA2, bruteforce, whatever
F00BaR`, sorry, i'm going to be busy for awhile
hence Windohs uses "share" which is easier but terribly insecure and Linux defaults it to "server" which takes a username and password. the problem is, tho, you need to send those through the command line to mount :/
unless someone knows some way to prompt much like mysql...
Windows hasn't used share by default since Windows 3.1.
sorry, you're wrong? haha
XP uses it
By default? That seems highly suspect...
by default.
HI everyone
how can i install dvd/vcd plugins?
how to restar vsftpd?
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart
service vsftpd restart
or that
service is the preferred mechanism.
?
rpm.livna.org probably
Julioms, http://rpm.livna.org --grab the repo
You can't install plugins onto physical media.
well XulChris has me covered and beaten :P
Into, w/e.
hã??
[root@dsl-kk-static-252 vsftpd]# /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart
[FAILED]
[ OK ]
[root@dsl-kk-static-252 vsftpd]#
Julioms, i think he means you might need to decrypt whatever it is to watch it.. who knows
ahh, =/
Julioms, give it a shot, you may be suprised
[FAILED]
lol too true
but
it still wont lemme log in
xp home uses share. :/ xp pro does not
Ah, I see.
crippleware.
So the degenerate version uses the degenerate mechanism. How unsurprising.
well. I guess it's a little more nuanced than windows 95 share stuff. but dunno the detail
AndyCap, are you sure about the Pro vs Home statement?
AndyCap, it seems to me the only thing asking for a username/password was Server edition's of Windohs
then you're doing it wrong.
heh, installing and clicking the pc over the network to copy my installers/stuff over? :P
moving on...
it still wont lemme log in to ftp
grr
ffs
thank you and good night.
Hi.
i amazes me how people join irc and ask uninformed questions for hours rather than read the damn docs
you'd probably recognize the persona from school. :P
anyone have an idea of some h.264 decoding hardware for linux?
Hmm, seems there's some work on a VA API..
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7967099221.html
http://www.embeddedstar.com/press/content/2004/4/embedded14073.html
Ok, when I said hardware I mean something that's usable with fedora.
not some vendors closed box wich may or may not be a blatant gpl violation.
its not nice being banned for the reason .
Don't act like an asshat and it won't happen.
Spam isn't nice either
and a core isn't really hardware. unless you make your own fpga.
mycpu.eu
no one was helping
F00BaR`, the reason was spam.
you're right, it's mean to ban without a good reason
yep
check it out. Guy made a 8hmz processor with discrete logic. no FPGA's at all/
Ew.
no one was helping you immediately so you decide to spam everyone, piss people off and ruin your credibility all in one .. good idea
no
I downloaded Live CD image and made an bootable cd , but it says checksum error , question is "With what program I can check those SHA1 hashes?"
yes.
i had been waiting for at least 10 mins
What OS?
OH NO!
*gasp*
:O
I'm on Windows XP atm.
Google for FCIV.
excuse the FREE help you receive here .. i'll try to be on time next time
xp sux
utomega, i'm sorry. i dont think anyone else is, but i'm sorry :P
get ubuntu
or fedora
Yes , thats why I'm trying to get Fedora7
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=B3C93558-31B7-47E2-A663-7365C1686C08&displaylang=en
Thank you ivazguez
ah! the vole
Ark Linux
dont create things you cannot support
you need to chill out and stfu for a bit
heh, you actually remembered the name of the thing. I only know they have one
F00BaR`: come back when you have checked your entitlement at the door.
Arklinux.org good linux distro, easy to use, and uses RPM's.
bye
yeah, bye
Ark... Ark has a packaging style similar to that of SuSE
AndyCap, I think some of Intel's latest chipsets can do h.264 hardware acceleration
hi again
F00BaR
ah. working on a k-line now, eh?
straw, i sure hope so
heheh. looks like he got the hint
Hello?
hello
EvilBob, what apps did you say will monitor wifi ap's
something i can download from yum
I looked at my favorite game's server stats, well one server's stats. And the map "ATCS" has been played 1337 times according to that stats thing.
I actually need a wifi scanner
Anvil, http://www.terrysoucy.ca/uploads/dearlord200.jpg
ahahaha
I need some help with PDA functionality in Fedora..............
"Yelling ONE THREE THREE SEVEN to the motherfuckin feds"
language, please
Bob_Dole... you are a geek. shh.
It's a quote from a song
there's this thing called a "proper situation" in which something is funny, tho
NetworkManager shows you available wifi networks
it is? must be a geek band
and I state it, because my favorite map on my favorite game got 1337 plays.
Tremulous.

+1 why i hate KDE
i skinned it like XP and a friend said "i didn't know you still used windows"
I hate KDE because I like Gnome, not because KDE sucks.
tyler-wylie, aside from t3h million menus to do 100 things, KDE itself isn't so bad
but yeah
i'd rather use GNOME
It's great at what it does, I just don't like what it does.
I forgot what I did.. I changed it to a lightweight setting....intentionally made everything ugly to free up resources. I forget how I did that and want to make it pretty again
ssh = my hero

"It?" No idea what desktop you're talking about. Try changing the theme.
KDE no doubt

If that's the case there should be a Theme preference.
About GNOME..hm yeah, I think it's gnome.
And gnome-session would be running, etc.
straw, do you play WoW?
well if you can't deal with gnome, kde will give you an aneurism
no

that didn't really make it any clearer. but sure, you can use fedora to share your internet connection. There is no built in gui
dunno if stuff like firestarter etc makes it easy to set up..
