generally; try running apt-get update; again.
mosno, last time this happened i grabbed the .deb and installed it manually with dpkg and it worked, but why is this happening in the first place? dondelelcaro i tried that (followed by an aptitude update, and running aptitude in ncurses-mode to install the kde-core metapackage)
(it could also mean that you happened to try downloading that file when whatever mirror you're connecting to was still downloading it)
it's happening because the .deb on whatever mirror you're using doesn't match the Packages file. Generally that means that something is wrong.
dondelelcaro, interesting. so it could be a transient thing
you probably should switch to a different mirror if that happens occasionally.
gasp.
this *is* the different mirror (i was using http:://ftp.au.debian.org before)
always followed by apt-get update && aptitude update && aptitude
do you have a proxy in between you and the mirror?
dondelelcaro, aaaaah. yes. damn it.
apt-get update = aptitude update?
I made edits to /etc/pam.d/common-* and /etc/vsswitch.conf (I think one or two others) to setup samba authentication with Windows AD and suddenly can't login as anything (local user, root, AD accounts). They all say invalid account after the username (never gets to password). I thought I've
undone all the edits, but I'm still locked out (using single-user for repair). What have I likely missed?
MangosDebian, in the past ive noticed if i change my sources.list and DONT run apt-get update and just depend on aptitude update, then aptitude fails to grab the files
so i got into the habit of the && set that i pasted
ah, just wondering. i avoid aptitude like the plague. just thought they used the same sources
dondelelcaro, i might try switching to ftp which shouldn't be intercepted by our proxy
yeah, it's probably the proxy that's screwing things up. md5sum the .deb as you wget it; it probably doesn't match 3e5b39b1b2dc7ae7cfa24cb46f1cb419
MangosDebian, they do, theoretically. dont ask me the details of my workaround, i just know that it "works"
dondek, http://paste.debian.net/31815 and http://paste.debian.net/31816
dondelelcaro, , http://paste.debian.net/31815 and http://paste.debian.net/31816
possible your proxy doesnt realise the file changed since the date stayed the same or something?
3e5b39b1b2dc7ae7cfa24cb46f1cb419 jackd_0.101.1-2_i386.deb
that's on a manual wget
and which packages have you perged?
dondelelcaro, apache and apache2

metapackages
those are just meta packages. You want to purge *all* of the apache and apache2 related packages.
like apache2-common and apache-common.
lemme give that a try

i agree, sometimes its easier to just purge the file in question from the cache than to just figure out why its broken. doesnt sound like a good problem to leave alone though

Guerin I just got new nic, can debian autodetect it or will I have ti install it manualy?
dondelelcaro, so it's safe to remove those directories?
are there any video cards with TV-out that have proper open source drivers?
i'm sick to death of nvidia propriatry crap
uh, no. You need to purge the packages which actually own those files, not a random metapackage.
If I download a debian dvd, do I need all three?
there's something really weird with my sound. I can only hear sound when I trigger the system bell continuously
does any one know how can I autodetect hardware in debian?

yes, network card, I am trying to replace the current one that is onbord jzxu
oh my god?
i've never seen text displayed upsidedown on my irc client like that\
how'd you do that?
well, that's probably going to involve figuring out which kernel module supports that card and loading that module instead of your old one
jzxu, can you give a lil more help pls
what's your network card?
I have 2 , I just placed the d-link on right now... ( the other one is 3Com we can do whatever is easyer
depends on what you need, the first one would do
hi what's a good wireless card i can use for debian/linux?
gnome?
are they different, or just add on packages?
yes
I have 2 , I just placed the d-link on right now... ( the other one is 3Com we can do whatever is easyer ) jzxu
well I think 3com is pretty well supported
it's esd probably which is messing things up.. run gstreamer-properties and try alsa
well does anyone else understand how this text was produced?uÝžoyq s,y݇ndooT Žo
ok jzxu let me replace the d-link now
the fsf has a list: http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/net/wireless/cards.html
anyone been having problems with xorg and i915 lately?
I'm getting the same thing with alsa

that doesn't help
i mean say i wanted to make my own upside-down text string? how would i
hah
care to explain?
fun with unicode
lsof /dev/snd/* and see what's using the card
which program did you use?
that would be telling
please?
/dev/snd/controlC0
I want to have fun with unicode too.
it's not really anything special, the gnome charactermap will probably do
I haven't seen any problems on my laptop
done upgrade lately?
no, on the left like (mixer_app)
mixer_app 3586 jzxu 39u CHR 116,0 6217 /dev/snd/controlC0
I upgrade daily
and it was rebooted yesterday, so I know I'm actually running the driver that was current as of that time
What problem were you having?
XV is broken
hmm, I haven't watched any videos... I'll try one
aplay a wav and see
how do I see memory info on debian?
say, aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
ie, how much
what kind of memory? DDR? ECC etc
cat /proc/meminfo
oops, sorry
can't tell what kind from that
Someone on #xorg is talking about a i915 patch, anyone heard anything of the sort?
thanks
I can successfully watch videos in both Totem and mplayer, using xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.0.0-1
jzxu the debian recognized the 3com by it self, i only had to put in the ip address host config stuff....
thanks a lot
what am I looking for?
and you have XV enabled?
does it play ?
no problem, I'm glad it worked out automatically for you
it's the same deal, if I activate the system beep while it's playing, I can hear the sound
yes, mplayer is using "-vo xv" and totem is using GStreamer's XV output plugin
thanks, I guess something is broken on my end?

hi
apt-get or aptitude
has anyone gotten wpa_supplicant working with a cardbus adapter?
synaptic
aptitude is safer
there is no good reason for a newbie to use anything other than aptitude
synaptic and apt-get are the past, aptitude is the future
I thought the rule was that GUI methods are preferred over text methods by newbies?
what's preferred is irrelevant. It's more about what's actually better.
the fact is aptitude can do more, and do it better than any other apt tool, and it has a gui to boot
(if you consider curses a gui, which I do)
apt-get
that's fine until synaptic breaks some dependencies, or fails to install or uninstall some additional packages when required. Or when you have to dist-upgrade.

I would except, I need a command line based program

hi
sup?
I run sid but I want lenny's 2.6.18 Xen kernel. Is there something important I should keep in mind if I want to use testing kernel on sid?
it should work reasonably well
just keep an eye on deps and you should be fine
Should I install the Xen hypervisor and admin tools from lenny?
And not the packages in sid?
The only thing missing from sid is the Xen kernel
But the hypervisor is apparently still there
how do you update a package with apt-get update?
I would think getting the lenny Xen packages would be best
to update an expecific package
apt-get install package
whats the most suitable os for a server
to update a package
yes
cant decide between debian, freebsd or fedora!
I want to install tremulous but the needed package tremulous-data isn't in repository
I vote: debian
you would!
that's to installed a package u dumb ass
But if it's already installed and outdated, then it will upgrade it, u dumb ass
Windows 2000 Advanced server of course
tremulous-data is in non-free, so be sure to have that section enabled in your sources.list for you repostory
why is it in non-free ? afaik it's CC
apt-get update not work for you?
For some reason... the tremulous-data package is listed as 'non-free' ... so make sure your apt system is set up to allow non-free repo grabs.
ok thanks
In the new version of Tremulous, the content will be CC 3.0 licensed which meets the DFSG so both packages should go into main
CC 2.x is non-free by the DFSG
now I have "etch main contrib", non-free is literally "non-free" ?
I'm fairly certain CC 3.0 is DFSG-free though so it should be fine on the next Tremulous version
yes
etch main contrib non-free
i can't answer that, sorry. Check the deps, they might be version-agnostic.
Best way to install Kiba-dock on Etch?
aptitude install kiba-dock
is anyone aware of a debian gnu-darwin port ?
I found a reference somewhere but am not able to find it anymore
no?
i don't believe such exists; unsurprisingly, since there's alread a debian gnu/kfreebsd
Do you happen to know the difference between linux-image-2.6.18-4-xen-amd64 and linux-image-2.6.18-4-xen-vserver-amd64 ?
Why is CC 2.x considered non-free by the DFSG, and what difference in CC 3.0 would make it acceptable?
there also was debian gnu/netbsd (but it's not updated anymore), but debian gnu/kfreebsd is very active
nope.
What makes the vserver package different?
did you try the gnu/hurd or plan9? nexenta gnu/solaris?
minix3?
Unfortunately I'm not 100% sure myself, although I've been intending on looking into that. I'd check past debian-legal discussions.
http://gnu-darwin.org/
omg, almost 300 bans here?! you guys sure dont believe in house cleaning do ya. And why is mwilson and fieldysnuts banned?!
gnu-darwin and minix probably lack seriously drivers
for the reason.
not quite a full sentence there
They are banned for the reason. There.
No solution is found that will install kiba-dock, kiba-plugins, kiba-setttings, and libakamaru0. They all say "..keep the following packages.... [Not Installed]"
it's called "ellipse". in a dialog there's no need for sentences as in verb (and whatever is needed for sentences)
or did you mean, "foo ---_THE_ --- reason"
then it's not in etch.
s/foo/for
yes, the reason why each was banned.

no, hence my later correction.
Hmm, that is why I specified Etch. I want to know the best way to get it installed. Apparently that's not a viable answer. Thanks though.
nah to what?
mwilson has/had different reason(s)
well that's why i said maybe. because i don't know
dont mean to stir up old crap or anything, just their names caught my eyes and were right beside each other in the list. mainly i was curious when freenode allowed such large ban lists though

i think ethstatus looks better though
!info iptraf
I want to be able to monitor the total amount of bandwith of a specific machine as well as outgoing through the network with lots of graphs, reports, etc
(Interactive Colorful IP LAN Monitor), section net, is optional. Version: 3.0.0-4 (sid), Packaged size: 159 kB, Installed size: 732 kB
thanks guys
iptop
or iftop? I forget
apt-get install ethstatus, tell me what you think
can those programs keep a total amount of bandwith used over a period of time like months, and then do reports ?
its nowhere near as indepth, but its simple and clean
i think firewall is better choice to keep stats
doesnt require a running daemon either
dondelelcaro/guerin: it's the hypervisor-package that updates the menu.lst...
writing the rules canbe tricky, though
hm, it looks like pppstatus :-)
shorewall
shitewall, you mean. No thanks.
ya, simple and nice though when you just need a quick glance
anyway, for my purposes I'd need it to run on openbsd.
shorewall's good for basic firewall configuration
ipmasq is good for a basic firewall configuration
$EDITOR ?
shorewall, firehol, etc have moving parts and abstraction layers, and are therefore complicated
basic firewall? thats askin for trouble heh
does Debian etch comes with hibernate function?
not at all. Anything more than basic is troublesome, because it usually means running commands you don't understand.
shorewall is very nice though
yes and no. It does, but support depends on your hardware.
ATI cards are particularly troublesome.
it was easier for me to learn iptables than shorewall's stupid config rules.
problem with manual iptables commands is that your security depends on how well you understand tcp in the first place
I do have a ATI card
not really. If you have a default DROP there's very little you can do to harm yourself, within reason.
I suggest you try the very latest ATI driver, then, or stick to the opensource driver, and pray.
when you install powersaved, make sure you force it to unload the module and switch_vt whenever you hibernate
could someone tell me, which is the documentroot path for the mailman in debian
One of the recent (but not the latest) ATI drivers wouldn't even allow standby.
thanks for the suggestion guys
in the sample file of mailman, its given /var/www/lists, whereas, under /var/www/ there is no such folder
I would, except that I don't have a dedicated firewall since my linksys router doesn't count as one
you would what?
I'm just saying that I don't have a dedicated firewall
have you read the README.debian?
all poor floppy has is a linksys router
ah. well, thats better than a wide open box with ssh and stuff open to the world
why do I visualise floppyears as a rabbit?
heh
I just installed acpi-support and hibernate packages
liable, yes, in that its written to create a link for /etc/mailman/apache.conf in the /etc/apache2/conf.d directory
how do I actually do hibernate?
liable, but all the apache configurations are commented and after uncommenting them
eat a shitload for three months, find a warm place, sleep for 6 months
liable, I am see that there is no /var/www/lists direcotry
I like your attitude!
i am not even drunk yet either!

ha
that was a quick apache 1 to 2 migration
hey, I got it hibernated
200
it is really quick
not sure if it will boot up right
and what happens when you create that dir?
heh nice. but nasty cursor :/
lol, is that a butterfly?
haha
surely there is more info than what you have read. though after installing a couple of web apps from debian repos i have found the documentation to be a little lacking
liable
realy funny
I just went hibernate for 1 min and come back
it works!!!!
Debian rocks
sing it brother
I am about to hibernate now
so see you all
Cya in 6 months.
Where do I get Debian On A Stick?
quick question guys
well, I still have my windows running, so
can either iftop, iptraf or ethstatus be run as a daemon ?
not so long
I want somthing that is running in the background and I can check once in a while to see the amount of bandwidth used
munin
just edit yout inittab and toss it on a vt
theres the web one iftop? iptop? that runs as a daemon
ntop?
I'd run something, such as ntop, on the router.
thats the one
ntop
munin is pretty sweet though.
Is the package checkinstall known by another name now?
nm
heh, been a while, and theres some funny new bash.org quotes
It's nearly trivial to install programs the debian way.
yea, animated if on windows w/ ie
cause nobody suspects the butterfly?
impossible!
i am easily amused
or bored i guess
you're from queensland, that goes without saying
i mean, you guys like cane toad golf
actually, i didnt grow up in queensland, and i dont live there anymore either, unfortunately
its a fun game!
oh, i thought you did
yes, it is a fun game
how can a single person maintain 220 debian packages?
the popping noise is very satisfactory
*boggle*
i suppose it depends on the packages.
thanks for the help guys
What if each package has an up-to-date website with a .deb link and the 220-package maintainer just has a script to grab them all and verify authenticity and add them to the proper spot in the repository? ;x
wtf with the butterfly ?
just looking through the list of packages
and where is my pony cursor!
ok, some of them appear to be easy maintenance
you mean sheep? :P
wanna see something sexy? http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z63/mangosdebian/?action=view¤t=mangosdebian.jpg (password "thanks")
Some people even maintain their entire OS from scratch, no package manager at all or anything else but their own programs.
what's sexy about that?
the debian logo
i wish you guys would get your stereotypical joke correct! :P
is it actually on the console?
yup
bootsplash patch
heh
hm, i suppose that is nifty
but logos are a WOFT
i can even clear screen and it doesnt earase unlike most patches
that's different, as this does not require installation package creation and provision to a user community
Many write scripts to automate things that are more complex, besides, making debian packages is not honestly that hard.
although im rather miffed that the debian rc scripts support "SPLASH" for usplash, but not bootsplash
i wouldnt mind prettying up my console like that
so i dont get the moving progress indicators yet til i hack up my rc's
i'd say it depends on the bitchiness of the program one tries to pack.
Haskell and Java are probably the worst.
but in that list are a lot which are probably easy to do. data files, for example
I18n stuff
if you trust me, i can send you the debian package with it already patched. you just need to install the usespace tools and add a splash=silent to grub
kde
Getting the package deps right for KDE would be difficult indeed, especially since they change so much.
yeah, and because kde users always want the version which is about to be released tomorrow
I ran module-assistant auto-install nvidia in an attempt to get Nvidia grpahics drivers installed on my 2.6.18 Xen kernel from lenny. X.Org won't work though unless the driver is ;nv' and not 'nvidia'
How can I check how it installed incorrectly?
Do we want such users in #debian anyway?
Are there any docks like Engage or kiba-dock that ARE in the stable repos?
sure, as long as they STFU
remind me in two weeks. i think it would be quite popular if you could get that in the repo btw
/msg dpkg search
$ lsmod | grep nvidia
Turns up NOTHING
Do I have to manually load the module?
nope. but gdesklets has something like that.
i surmise you don't have nvidia loaded
that'll be $150 for an hour's consultant fees
You get a lot of lazy users here don't you?
a *lot*
ty
YOu're cynicism gives that away
Your
!you're
ah, fair catch
Beat ya to it
np. i still need to work on the progress indicators though. usplash seems to have similar syntax, if not identical. and the rc file already has it built in
happen's to the best of us sometime's
Ha
Hello. Could anyone recommend a resource monitor/grapher suitable for a large cluster? Centralized collection and low load on the nodes, if possible.
i'm not cynical, i just resent people who are lazier than me, because I'm DAMNED lazy
IO, CPU breakdown, Mem breakdown and Net.
#beowulf?
Empty
I say you're cynical considering "/msg dpkg search" I'm searched repos and google, but the only thing I found was kxdock (or something like that) and it looked like ass.
ganglia?
Not saying I blame ya though
^^^ Just pointing out the obvious
well, the bit where MY laziness comes in is that I have no idea what kiba-dock or the other one you wanted are like, so in lieu of telling you to explain stuff, I figured I'd give you a tool you might not hasve considered yet.
i made the butterfly
!worship tarzeau
nice
i'm using terminal.app, i really like the fonts it can use and the size as well as the meta-n key it supports
? the screeny?
Hmm, sounds like you're right. You're not cynical, you're lazy so you expect others to be. Am I understanding now?
yes i've seen it
I want my $150 back
modprobe nvidia loaded the module, but I tried to use it and X.Org still fails and complains of no such driver as "nvidia"
What exactly did "module-assistant auto-install nvidia" do?
Thanks. You wouldn't know if it does IO too?
Btw, for a lazy person, you sure do provide a lot of useful feedback in here.
I'm a bit worried because if Xen + Nvidia doesn't work out for me I'm going to want to switch back to a non-Xen Debian kernel and I want graphics drivers to work THERE.
ahh yea, its nice. gonna try usplash real quick on a vm box. that was apt-get install bootsplash though. usplash i dont know if as good. sec
but nvidia WASN'T loaded at the time, so I was right. I should charge you another hour for this analysis, but you've got another five minutes
don't remember about that. check the site
more or less. Though it's not just projection; it's mostly derived from experience.
mhm, reading. If anyone can think of any others I could still use options.
Aye, well, it's loaded now, and I'll be dammed if it doesn't want to work
does that mean you will or won't be damned?
I haven't figured that out yet...
...maybe I should be thinking about that instead of graphics drivers and virtualisation.
Nasty combination
Hadn't thought of this till now. if I install a xen kernel, will I lose the ability to run nvidia module (or compile new one using their script) ? Is that what you two are getting at?
maybe you won't not be not damned ... or you will not not be damned
damned if you do, damned if ... oh nevermind
holy fuck, Shogun just brought in half a huge rat
not too bad for a kitten
I'm struggling with that right now. I just installed the Xen kernel in lenny and headers, and I tried running Nvidia's installer and it said it doesn't support Xen kernels and quit.
i would be more worried about the ones he missed
hi all.. i wanna take to your attention this bug with update-manager in lenny: http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.bugs.dist/browse_thread/thread/9158e26a7fb9db6/6b3dfad434448366?lnk=st&q=AttributeError%3A+%27module%27+object+has+no+attribute+%27GetPkgActionGroup%27&rnum=1&hl=en#6b3dfad434448366
i don't know if someone is allready taking care of this.. but someone should...
is it on bugs.debian.org?
if not, it's not getting any attention.
thats in debian?
in lenny, apparently
lilalinux:
bollocks
haha
you know who I'm talking to
?!?
stop having a nick that begins with l
i can't find it
you're confusing me
have you experienced that bug firsthand?
whos aptitude wont search?
yes i am
then run `bugreport' and put all the relevant information in there
it will give you all the instructions you need
wich package i need?
you should need no package ... err ... reportbug
not bugreport
verbnoun, like the good Bog intended
oh.. ok
reportbug
i was having a brainfart when i saw that and couldn't work out why it didn't sound right
heh
Okay so I ran "module-assistant auto-install nvidia" and I want to undo that now
dpkg -l |awk '/nvidia/ {print $2}' |xargs aptitude purge
Wow
there are easier ways, but I'm too lazy to figure them out
Now *that's* more the kind of stuff I like to see before parting with $150
hah
Easier than one line?
good point
k
Argh it even made a nvidia-kernel-2.6.18-4-xen-amd64 package!
of course
It looks like when I ran "module-assistant auto-install nvidia" it actually installed Nvidia drivers for Xen!
Or... are those not the Nvidia drivers themselves?
they are
i think
nvidia-kernel?
i don't do retarded proprietary shite
Aye
I want an Intel card =[
but that's what I understand from observing people in here
So if m-a built a driver for Xen, why's it not working?
i fucking wish they would archive bugs that they arent going to fix. aptitude has about 100 that are older than 1 year.
and several of those are older than 3 years
heh
nvidia in xen is just taking the piss
aptitude has 328 bugs on the default bug page, thats just stupid
no wonder people dont bother reading bts
i do read them
samba users are disconnected from server every few minutes... they have to authentify each time I asked on #samba too, still waiting for a response... I prefere ask here because I have to solve this problem very quickly as this is on a customer network.
ooooh, someone already made a rc patch
i gotta test this hehe
you just need a faster way to scan and drop unimportant stuff
no, debian needs to fix the default, and make so i can scan for more if i wish
i'm glad i don't maintaint THOSE webpages, i'm not sure how hard/easy it'd be to do that
the amount of bugs you see that are 3 years old and not archived is totally annoying
aren't they sorted by time?
i'm glad i can use one large page and grep through it
instead of of clicking many links to also scan the rest
thats not the point though
true, the problem is with bug reporters that report bugs that aren't really bugs
and bug reports who report bugs without the needed amount of detail, then are not reachable again
yes, and those bugs should have a tag and only be shown when they are specifically searched for
i agree
what would you call that tag?
implement a javascript hider thingy on it
NO!
heh
you know what? you can mirror the bts and do exactly what you want
thats not an answer
if you have 26GB of bandwidth to spare
i can provide that
done it.. hope i have exim4 configured to send email outside
i am not sure
we make people search bts all the time, when you see a page like aptitudes, no wonder they give in
reportbug will complain if it fails
ok.. Sending message via /usr/sbin/sendmail... Bug report submitted to: "Debian Bug Tracking System" submit@bugs.debian.org
so if you had a 1 kg needle in a very lage haystack, you wouldn't search it because the very large amount of hay?
i think it's ok then
the 1kg needle is made of real gold
easy - metal detector
(like the bts sometimes has the solution to a problem)
or fire is even easier
heh
quality
unf
Just a quick question. Which versions of KDE comes with Debian stable and testing these days?
gold isn't magnetic, is it.
no it's not
nope
well, bollocks to Guerin's metal detector then.
whats that got to do with metal detectors?
haha
/msg dpkg search
it's conductive, but doesn't even have para-magnetic properties
%do sussudio
%bear liable
metal detectors don't only work on metallicness
3.5.5 i've got on Etch
B_Raven, if you ask http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_packages then you can find out :-)
you actually have to get a special metal detector that can only find ferrous metal
i swear yesterday pdo said Etch had 3.4.x, which was wak
some work on magnetism; others work on ultrasound, and respond to anything especially hard
i meant electrical conductivity, not heat
or dense, to be more correct
must have been my imagination.
Guerin, delliott, did search in the package list, versions did not make sense (said 5:something). Thanks, mosno.
'whack'
%dict wak
could not find definition for wak
anything before a : is an epoch version - for debia's pacjkage system only, ignore it
you were looking at a Debian metapackage (or whatever its called), dig deeper (ie. look at its deps)
i don't think dict has urban dictionary in it
aah but yea kdelibs has epoch 4
Well, if it's 3.5.x as you say all is cool.
but not their print dialog
my only beef with KDE is konqueror doesn't support stuff like Gmail (but it's probably Gmails's fault, not KDE's)
i've had a user not able to print because of kde print dialog
you can fake it...
Never did use konqueror for web browsing, prefere firefox.
what's wrong with the print dialog?
it reads the user agent..
yea i fall back to iceweasel for poo websites
Ehhh? Something's wrong with their print dialog?
but i find konqueror nicer faster and well integrated to the desktop, in general
that's only true if you run kde
*shrugs* Haven't used a printer in... oh, about 7 years or so. So really wouldn't know, was a windoze person back then.
yeh, it says "go fuck yourself, foo' !" instead of print on the button
in which case you've given up on lightness as an objective
not relative to Gnome i haven't.
i cant remember what i did, but iceweasel shows up in my apache logs as MS for ages, even after they changed that switcher thing
about:config ?
but gnome is about as light as a pregnant hippo
and about as useful
well ti hippos she's very useful
to*
well, i personally find i can't really do without a full desktop environment on my work/home PCs. :-\
what are you saying about gnome users?
Ehhh, rate gnome up there with fedora and mandriva. May be all nice and shiny, but it makes me want to pull my hair out. And if there is one thing I'd like to avoid it's going bald in my mind 20s.
what are you saying about hippos? :P
you have my condolences. I bet you also drive a 5000cc v8 to the shops.
bald is bueatifull
with automatic transmission
yea Gnome is a pita where it shouldn't be. imho they haven't done a great job integrating different parts of the desktop that imho should be integrated.
that's probably the biggest complaint
actually i drive a 1.3L EFI hatchback
i drive a pair of feet, or a bicycle
bet your a hairdresser too!
who me?
lol
heh
i wish, maybe if i was i'd score more sex :P
what kinda miles per gallon of jolt cola you get on that?
my sister is getting a mitsubishi l200 with huge wheels and spotlights, in matte black
Well, the part that drove me nutters was it assuming that either I am a moron that should be protected, or I am advanced enough to not mind digging through non-documented config files. KDE lets me do stuff just the way I want to without having to read manuals for a week before touching
it.
yes. sorry, was having a flashback and thinking of toyota celicas
it's not her fault, her mate is a redneck mechanic who needs to lighten his inventory
Hi. Anyone who could help me with pam_mysql on Debian ? It works unitil I change passwd vi courierpassd - then there is something like {CRYPT}CRYPTED_PASSWD in crypt filed in mysql and it stops working :/ Without {CRYPT} prefix works ok. What to do ?
solved
I'd like to use crypt
yes, kde is more intuitive i find for most people. a lot of the time in gnome you right click something and stuff that should be in the context menu isn't. you have to open up a seperate app and do your thing there where in kde you'd have it in your context menu
there's better hash schemes
i havent come to grips with PAM yet, she is the crazy lady that throws cats at you when you knock on her door..
VELCRO CAT! LOOK OUT!
by `intuitive' you actually mean `windows-like'
i mean 'modern-gui-like'
if it was windows like, i probably wouldn't use it
nothing modern about being windows-ish
hehe
nothing to do with computers is intuitive imho
except perhaps a well designed UI
it's an oer-used, mis-used word, when it comes to this sort of thing
What's wrong with "windows-like"? Not liking their philosophy does not preclude liking their interface. Some stuff in windows does come under the heading of "works quite well".
no, the fundamental design metaphors behind KDE are windows (and CDE), whereas with gnome they're OSX (and *step)
gimme unix
join #mediawiki
gimme beer
which means that, without realising it, if you gre up using windows, KDE seems more intuitive
interesting theory.
i used kde when I first switched, for the same reason ... and still find it saner than gnome
i actually like kde, mostly just the look.
it's not really a theory, it's the entire reason there are two competing desktop systems.
funnily enough i think gnome looks better, but kde "just works" better
it's not "the entire reason".
gtk i find ugly as fuck, but, thats what preferences are about
if you recall, Gnome Project started because Qt was non-free
hi guys. anyone wanna point me to a good article somewhere, or give me an idea where to start, if i wanna run 2 connections? one ethernet, one wifi? maybe put bit torrent on one, other stuff on the other, or just load balance?
gtk has theme support though
now, if they can learn to trim down on resource use, they'd be better off. at least it isn't hastalavista in terms of resource use...
besides, i dont buy your over-generalising theory.
no offence, i just happen to disagree
yes, several ugly themes
Wasn't QT released under the GPL a while back?
long time ago
yea. it's dual licensed.
ive seen gtk themes that were Mac OS clones, very good looking compared to default widget sets
Shiny.
Gnome Platform does a lot of things right, Gnome Desktop doesn't.
imho.
figures someone with a nick like yours would say that
its hilarious that there is several of these sort of conversations every day
interesting also to note that parts of Gnome Platform (or at least parts that were originally seen implemented into a working system) are beginning to be used in KDE (cite dbus/hal)
your one to talk simon raven :p
For me gnome seems to be a better desktop for people who are new to computers in general, seems to hide all the hideously complex configuration options from plain view. Personaly I love hidiously complex configutations options.
that's because they're trying to merge the backend stuff, or at least sync
:-) be glad that both exist, i say
simonrvn, Aye, I say "nevermore" a lot too.
heheh
lol
a good thing
they are just nice tools, nothing to do with the actual look of the desktop
it is. grab the best of both
jah, iceweasel :P
I like Gnome but to be honest Nautilus is really severely lacking many needed features which makes it annoying.
even though that's not gnome in Debian
and implements some really stupid useless ones (notes and emblems for files)
ahh, i'm seeing here that all i have to do is turn on the 2 nics and it should just work?
yay an emblem! that i can't search on! or use outside limited parts of the Gnome desktop! woo!
mosno, That I can agree with. Having two major (and several handfuls of minor) desktop systems helps a lot in not only maintaining diversity, but also leads to better solutions being found (by more possible solutions being tried).
umosno, That I can agree with. Having two major (and several handfuls of minor) desktop systems helps a lot in not only maintaining diversity, but also leads to better solutions being found (by more possible solutions being tried)./u
that's what freedesktop.org is for, to make some common features, standards, with the 3 major ones (xfce, kde, gnome)
wow did 4 runs will on my old p160
^^debain
liable, that'd be me, sorry.
Things I want to see are being able to set icons all to the same size and being able to align to a grid (both of which KDE can do but something in KDE bugs me)
jah, cite using beagle libs in a kde search tool
fdo ftw
anyway i should get my arse off this PC and over to a friend's.
you are officialy off my christmas card list
later
can i be off it too?
anyway, later people
sure, you were gonna get money in the card this year too!
hehe
bye bye
you could possibly change your Gnome session to run nautilus with the --no-desktop (or whatever) switch, then use some desktop-icon-displayer app.... just a thought
go to your friends house!
too much gui for you?
yes
forgive me, i'm stuck in RHEL and OpenServer ssh xterms all day
well, too much pointless quaraling
no wonder you seem a little on edge
not quareling, just having a hearty discussion on the interface that lets me use my computer each day
and yea i am on edge. freezing my arse off and hungry
stupid winter, its cold here too
lol, i'll refrain. see ya
oh god no. some 7-11's are turning into simpson kwik-e-marts lol

does a firewall require a lot of memory?
no
unless you have a bazillion rules
alright, thakns
ya ya, i thought so lol
my original reply was "thank you..."
/bin/cat: /sys/block/sdb/dev: No such file or directory ||| Waiting 1 seconds for /sys/block/sdb/dev to show up - What's this ? /sys/block/sdb/dev exists
hmmm is it unadvisable or exceedingly complicated to run 2 simultaneous connections? i'm not finding a lot of direct references
2 isps?
well i have cable modem here, and there's wifi available free in the building too
on a side note, a brewery made cartons of duff for a short period when the simpsond first came out, i heard years later that they were selling for about ten grand a piece years after they were sued for making them
sdb as in scsi disk b. not sure what it means, but any use in fstab for it?
i'd like to run both, share the load, or perhaps stick some things on one connection so my other isn't clogged
well, there is diff routes that are static to keep it simple. or you can do a kind of round robin route setup so each new connection goes out alternating connections.
sdb is the decive my usb 320gb hdd belongs to and it's the one system boot from
well it's dynamic on one, has to be, and the other i think i can get static. i can get static on both if i get a 2nd router if it's really necessary
hi all
the strange thing is kernel 2.6.18 works - 2.6.21 pops this message
is /sys mounted currently?
u mean in fstab ?
no§
but the strange thing is kernel 2.6.18 works - 2.6.21 pops this message
no, right now in .21. perhaps your missing sysfs support from kernel?
people I need to redirect all ssh connections by other gateway. how to do that by iptables?
compiled 2.6.21-5 with default optioons
changed nothing
i mean static/load balanced routes. "route -n"
anybody installed openfire?
goes out route 1, anything else default route etc
ahh, iptables then?
hi
i'm compiling a kernel
everything built fine,
thats avoiding the underlying question i asked though. is /sys mounted and workin in .21? i dont care if you compiled the same options or not, cause theres always room for error
but it wont boot ?
but yes
it wot boot
haha
says invalid root file sys or somethign
i gues it has to do with initrd
i scan around and find update-init*
well, iptables can mark the packets according to your TOS or whatever and then you can route based on that using routing tables. your really getting into a complex art though
but i can't use it to create an initrd img
any tips?
hrrrm. i have a buddy that might be able to help me with this, he likes it when i have to ask him things
try again. you need your fs driver and your hd controller driver built in
ext3
you have grub installed
yes, it lists in there
there's no entry for /sys in fstab but mount returns sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
i don't know my controller driver
how do i find that out?
there are plenty of howtos for this out there if you feel like doing your own research
then you have to make new initrd image for new kernel
what command should i run?
i couldn't find any directly, though i just hit the first dozen google links on 2 or 3 searches
sys doesnt need an fstab entry on debian
sysfs doesnt need an fstab entry on debian
or, perhaps i just didn't know enough to know if they were describing what i want to do
mkinitrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18 2.6.18
btw, if i have a file named .config then the config options are read from it right?
this 2.6.18 is kernel version
so ls -l /sys while booted in .21 shows files? does the file in question exist?
you can replace this 2.6.18 with your version
have people noticed autofs die often?
valdyn ok but at boot-time it says : /bin/cat: /sys/block/sdb/dev: No such file or directory ||| Waiting 1 seconds for /sys/block/sdb/dev to show up
hmm mkinitrd not found
MangosDebian, once booted /sys/block/sdb/dev is a text fil
i'm using it for /home directories and it happens on etch amd64 as well as i386
try google: linux multiple routes
s/fil/file which says 8:16
people any idea?
apt-gettig it now
that probably is supposed to mean that your sdb isnt found, not that sysfs is broken
ok, i was doing 'multiple network connections' and such
s
google for 'Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO'
can't find mkinitrd
valdyn, the strange thing is kernel 2.618 does not pops this error
well, least it exists. no idea what would want that info though, sorry
thanks
ahh

!custom kernel
read http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#Why and read "Debian" when it has "OpenBSD", or see debian kernel image
i'm starting to get an idea. similar to when i had 4 nics in my old box long ago, to feed the other 3 computers in the house.
got it
thanks folks, naptime
can someone explain to me, why kdepim 3.5.7 is not yet in testing, but the rest of kde 3.5.7 is? i see that it has not been build on some platform, but why does this block the mainstream platforms?
i drove 12 hours each way to des moines for the iowa tax forum and rp's event after, i'm too beat to deal with this tonight
you have initrd-tools installed on your system
its ok, the dark arts require full attention, lest you want to hurt yourself
that contains mkinitrd
lul. it has indeed been a while since i tried anything complicated
valdyn, i guess something's wrong with initrd
is there anybody uses flash player + firefox? i need a favor
most people here are the same prolly. thats the kinda thing you setup once and just backup and forget it
yep. like the old days, slack 7.1 and p3 smp, 2 dsl lines and 4 nics. didn't want to set that up twice.
its mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.21.5
btw, the name spells with an 'n' not a 'b'
if we all remembered every command option for every daemon on a typical linux box, we would go insane, or get alzheimers
hope its not charset issues
whats wrong with update-initramfs?
mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18 2.6.18
this is corrected one
mkinitrd is depreciated in favour of mkinitramfs i believe
well, for 2.6.8+ or .11+ or something like that
i meant that was the correct command
i've run it
seemd to work
now i gotta reboot to find out....
no its working
I am running that on 2.6.8+
i used mkinitramfs
i'm using 2.6.21.1
was 2.6.12+ anyways
btw,
my network admin tool doesn't list my network devices anymore

first i must apologise,
i'm running debian sid
i guess this is an etch channel
network admin tool doesn't list my network devices any more
: i'm guessing its dbus related, but there've been no new updates to sid for a while now
at least none relevant to me
and my predicament
this is a Debian channel, regardless of the model... but Sid should be used only if you really damn know what the hell you are doing
yeah, what if you 'wanna know damn well what you're doing?
i suppose that's how you get better
two years ago, i didn't know how to 'mkdir'
now i'm building my kernel
not with SID
ubuntu stable is not challenging
Learn with Stable. Sid is for development, NOTHING else
is also 'too 'just works' for me
ubuntu? ...pfff
sid is perfectly fine for people with a little dpkg foo
and no care if shit breaks horribly
i dont mind helping people with a little bit of a clue with sid breakage, as long as they can take a proactive role when you suggest something
is there a minimal rss reader for debian?
if you need a challenging OS, i suggest vista on a P3/500
and asking "how do i downgrade foopkg" isnt those people
i just wish i could get the same response
i would rather tongue kiss my grandpa
hrm, thats a good way to stop conversation i guess..
talking about challenging... I want to make double DNS check and if some IP does not match to report and/or avoid connection
a couple of DNS IP's available in resolv.conf could be checked
lol cafuego
do i need any iptables at all if i want to use a machine as router for public ips
?
hell, i wouldnt even try sid, nor have I in a decade
!
nope
sure!
even if not as router...
what do you want do to?
with this question, understand more about routing.. in reality, protect my racked machines using a dedicated firewall box which only has one IP.. their all connected to the same switch, but i want one of the machiens to act firewall for them all
!confuse js_
No, where was my hamster yesterday, js_? wellies of the dictatorship of tibet with extra cheese
if you are wanting a machine to act as a firewall, one would imagine iptables might be intrinsic to that plan
so your machines beind the firewall have no public IP?
they do
all of them do
weel, it is not necesary for routing itself, of course but having a computer without firewall is a madness to me, and specially if used as router
but i dont want to maintain separate firewalls for each machine
how many machines?
!irritate me
HELP ME!!! who uses dvd ???/
yes, the whole point is to have a single firewall for all machines in the end
