is there a way to disable alle modules?!

morning

morning!

/etc/modprob.d/blacklist ?

run invoke-rc.d alsa --force-reload && invoke-rc.d alsa-utils reset 0

think thats the filename, its in there though if you look around

is amd64 a 64 bit version of debian?

yep
for 64-bit x86-processors

oki

there is noc blacklist

there's some non-x86 64-bit processors out there

hey guys, question for the guru's, out of the dosen or so package mirror programs for debian, what one is best for only mirroring the security archives? Looking to package a cd of them over time for offline use.
check the files, one of the has blacklist modules

invoke-rc.d: syntax error: unknown option "--force-reload"

specifically, i dont want to mirror the whole site, i just want the i386 updates for etch

invoke-rc.d: syntax error: unknown option "--force-reload"
invoke-rc.d: syntax error: unknown option --force-reload
test

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist is on my system, no idea why you cant find it

sry!!!!!!!!

my bad invoke-rc.d alsa force-reload

;D
ok i have a blacklist

that wont help if the module is already loaded and cant be removed cause its in use though. only stops future loading

hey it works without alsaconf so far!!!!!!
may i try to reboot now?

so i have a question that is probably more specific to courier but ill ask in here for hope.. will courier-maildrop honour the uid:gid values that it gets from auth-daemon?

Where 'icedove' save the mail box?

it does not work after restart
cahoot:

you checked for a dotfile in your home dir?
i mean, its that or in ~/Mail or something. perhaps ~/.icedove?

MangosDebian, I have got it at .mozilla-thunderbird/o7mp52d4.default/Mail/Local\ Folders/Inbox
thanks

like sparc

heh, they changed the name but still use the same dot folder? nice

MangosDebian, yeah. They have only changed what is forced by the law
well, I am not sure

!icedove

extra, extra, read all about it, icedove is a fork to replace thunderbird. Debian is unable to distribute thunderbird with the thunderbird name due to trademark restrictions. See also DFSG, iceweasel, or gnuzilla http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/.

trademark restrictions? lol

lol!!
oh yeah, wasn't there a thunderbirds tv show??

hah

i dont understand how thats even an issue. if debian is forced to change names, than mozilla should have to rename as well

MangosDebian, do you even know what a trademark is?

i think the trademark restrictions bit means more that you can't distribute a modified version of mozilla stuff with the same name

IANAL, so no

hello, how can I know which packages depens on a given package? thx

MangosDebian, well the owner of the trademark (ie mozilla foundation) gets to keep using the name

rilofa, apt-cache depends i think

I'll try it, thx

mozilla is a joke

tarzeau, i agree

mosty:

rilofa, i also like apt-rdepends

so debian had to change names because they forked? or they would have had to rename it even if they only distributed it with debian anyways?

yetifoot, if I'm not wrong apt-rdepends gives more info, doesn't it?

MangosDebian, yes (because what debian releases is modified)

yetifoot, apt-cache depends does the job i wanted

ah, well that makes more sense

rilofa, yes, or at least i found it more helpful, as the recursive nature works well
i think the problem comes also because firefox official uses some non open source bits IIRC, and debian don't want

yetifoot, recursive, yes indeed

thanks for the nfo though

it was originally just the artwork, then mozilla got anal and said debian would have to get all patches approved by mozzilla

what is this error?

anyone who can help me with my sound? my sound doesnt work until i run alsaconf - after every restart

modpost: GPL-incompatible module fglrx.ko uses GPL-only symbol '__rcu_read_unlock'
what is this error
?
when i compile hosting kernel

regarding apt-cache depends what's the sense of "|"?

where should I stick a few amixer commands needed for the mic?

kinda understandable. I mean if you take a copy of my code, add some patches and things break, people would associated the bad experience with my product because of you. Very easy to abuse if someone had ill intent in mind from the start

rilofa, i'm not sure, i only used it once or twice

i dont do sound but, doesnt alsaconf have a startup script?

dont think so

have you checked?

yetifoot, thanks anyway... I was guessing about installed/not installed packages: but it is not

Hi
some people have experience about munin?

oxylin, yes

mosty, I synchronize my server hosting with ntp... in munin, peers appear but nothing is graph...

oxylin, what are you trying to graph?

I don't really know... it's the default config
mosty, but it seems to be the offset, the delay and jitter

oxylin, i can't help you unless you know what you're trying to do

lol, "What are you trying to do?", "I DONT KNOW! *cries*"

mosty, I would like to disable ntp in munin if possible, or if not, to clean it by removing what is useless

oxylin, remove the relevant script from /etc/munin/plugins/

mosty, http://sd-10654.dedibox.fr/munin/private-net/server.private-net.html|Other
mosty, http://sd-10654.dedibox.fr/munin/private-net/server.private-net.html#Other

you can edit the plugin script(s) to see why they're not working (try running them from the command line), or just remove the ones you don't want

ok thank you

any suggestions on how one might go about mirroring i386 etch security updates?

can't you get some apt mirror tool that lets you mirror for certain lines in sources.list

MangosDebian, apt-mirror or apt-proxy or approx

well, i see a few tools that all seem to do the same. but after i get an archive mirror'd, i would like to package it in a debian cd format as well. just wondering if anything did both or if i just have to get like debmirror and package it
i dont really want a proxy though since that would require me to actually pick updates. I just want everyone one of them for just i386 to burn to cd

MangosDebian, debmirror would work

well, got a mirror program lined up, any suggestion for tool to make a apt-get compatible cdrom iso out of the mirror files?

apt-cdrom?
search for apt, theres a pile of tools for doing stuff

does that actually make them? always thought it was just to add new cd's to apt
ok sorry, been search cdrom and packages and mirror and stuff but no luck yet

just search apt, then show the packages that look promising

sounds good, thanks

how do i remove oss modules?!

only 540 packages lol (apt-cache search apt) :/

lsmod

hello people

Hi lads
you know debian comes in 3 parts 4 gig each
do i need all 3 parts
or will part 1 be enough to install ?

.... er?

i tried downloading debian

just get the netinstaller if you have dsl

bah fuck
wheres da netinstaller?

!d-i oush

oush, you want to go to http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/ Or http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ (if you've got hardware that the 4.0r0 installer doesn't support) for your own good, and everyone else's.

Since when has Debian been 12G?

its actually more
if you download all the dvd's

5
8
1
iv got dvd 1
whats dvd 2 and 3 for?

Wow...

just install it with the dvd then

everything that isnt on dvd 1

lol so i need to download all 3 before i can begin installing?

no

dont paste

I am wondering if I should use testing for a desktop use setting?

just install with the dvd

dvd1 all you need. but the less popular stuff goes on the other 2 dvd's

on debian 4.0 do i need to type linux26 any more?

no

So i can install with DVD1?

yes

okey dokey thanks
also does Debian support steam?
:P

i believe they sort the cd/dvd's according to popularity contest results

!penixstrike popularity-contest

A towering Penix descends from the heavens, knocking popularity-contest to the ground and leaving a large wet spot.

lol, whats a Penix anyways?

!make penix cry

hah. let me see if I now top that
awww. not quite

damn!

heh

i inadvertantly deleted /var/lib/*. now gdm won't start, apt* won't work.. any way to recover?

p-a-venk: wow

sure
recover from the backups that you should have

how does one inadvertantly do that?

I still don't do backups even though I just got through recovering from my main desktop drive dying
I'm so tough

speaking of backups. whats the gig with keeping a live backup?

gutton for punishment

it's called raid
livin' on the edge!

I mean a seperate machine, with a software carbon copy of the origional

you could probably use lvm snapshots and transfer them over, but you'd be consuming a fair amount of resources
or rsync individual files/directories

or just use one of the many backup programs.

RAID is no replacement for backups

very true, but it can be used in such a way

RAID is the "seatbelt" of backups

What happens if you get Nuked!!?
Will RAID be good?

I have ETCH installed and want to watch television. I have this Pinnacle Systems TV card. Which package should I install ?

what's wrong with my apt-get if I cant get some of the vary available packages ... like moodin gtk-qt-engine etc... http://paste.debian.net/31752

tv time

metalkitty, what's the error message?

Couldn't find package moodin

maybe it doesn't exist in the official repo?

ktwilight_, possible which one should I add then ...
blah

what is the package that kills that lil popup when starting gnome from gdm that tells about all the things being initiated?

That's weird. Everyone says how bad the ATi drivers are and not many people use them as they use nVidia or Intel stuff, but the ATi drivers are updates in Sid more often than nVidia's...

What is the difference between "linux-image-2.6-xen-686" and "linux-image-2.6-xen-vserver-686"? Which one do I need in order to run Dom0?

yes, they are releasing them almost monthly, but they dont actually fix anything or add new features...

that doesn't mean they're high quality though

hi, i try to configure ldap over ssl, and i wonder, my suffix is "o=company", what sould I use then as "common name" when I generate my certificate to have it working ? ( sorry btw, i know its a question for #ldap but anyone answer in there ... )

Penix, No, I mean nVidia has drivers out for ages before someone makes Debian packages. The ATi ones get packaged far faster.

ah. just up to the maintainer I guess
team vs. individual etc.

How to use /dev/dsp from inside a c program? what should I do to configure it to 8ksample/16bits/1channel before sending sound data to it? any hint?

not sure if there are any ati/nvidia packaging teams...

hello
i would like to know how to configure a ethernet card in debian etch
i can see 3 ethernet cards in my system using the command lspci | grep -i eth
but then i dont know to to confiure the eth1 and eth2

Enverex, constant updates != good support :P

syed_nawaz, run "ip link list" and see if they are listed as eth1 eth2...

pimp31415, The maintainers really don't have to do much other than package the driver, they dont give support

'/msg dpkg interfaces' might help

syed_nawaz, then go to /etc/network/interfaces and copy the section from "eth0" to the other cards.

more specifcally, the example file
bleh

Enverex, by support i mean worx well
i mean has all features
etc

syed_nawaz, or "man interfaces". to bring up/down the card, use "ifup eth1", "ifdown eth1". that is all.

i ran the commmand ip address host link list and it denotes the eth1 and eth2 as well

pimp31415, Again, irrelivant.

its what happens when closed source hardware/software hits an open source os
not irrelivant at all

pimp31415, There's generally no reason not to upgrade drivers unless they are known to break something

nvidia works pretty well adn they are decent at coding their stuff for nix
not so Enverex perhaps they added in a few new things or fixed a bug or two
dunno.. what is in the changelog?

Thats my point, you were arguing AGAINST updating

can you tell me some international mirror, as my local (bulgarian ones) doesn't seem to have libgtk2.0-dev and the gcc-4.2 base

why would you think that another mirror would have it when yours doesnt?

[i'm using lenny/sid, i386]
because they might have not syncronised, otherwise this means the package is broke
broken*
All i did was apt-get install gtk-qt-engine and it failed on most of the files

!mirrors

| to make a mirror, see http://www.debian.org/mirrors/

thanks

Enverex, no i wasnt
i swear!

pzn, even after adding the entries in /etc/network/interfaces the network connection is not up

i was just saying that just because the driver has been updated does not mean that the support is great for the hardware -

hey

has anyone managed to get vsync on with fglrx?

and you ran ifup after?

the driver seems to ignore the options in xorg.conf as well as drirc for me

meaning that some rather large bugs may not have been solved and the updates are rather fixing smaller bugs or so

im having an issue getting ad-hoc networking to work (wireless) between my computer and my laptop (debian, both)

mybad for not being clearer

have you checked if the neighbours were using it

the issue for ad-hoc is that they see each other, but they don't give each other ips (dhcp fails)

pimp31415, I never said support for their stuff was good

liable, i have given ifup

uh, not sure.. dont think they are

ALL I said was that it's odd that the maintainers package up the ATi drivers considerably faster than the nVidia drivers

you need to set them manually

its ad-hoc with a key, so.. i just set it up and connect immediatly, but they dont give each other ips..

when i am restarting the network using the command /etc/init.d/netwrok restart

oh, how do I do that with iwconfig

and a route as well

the eth0 which was connected is also going down

with ifconfig, and route

do you have a tutorial

did you exec "ifup eth1"? does "ifconfig" shows eth1?

nope

syed_nawaz, did you exec "ifup eth1"? does "ifconfig" shows eth1?

about tvtime: indeed works not, but the audio..... haven't got any: silent movie :-)

ok thanks

not = now

yes, now ifconfig shows eth1
pzn, but then my eth0 is down now

syed_nawaz, was your eth0 up before?
syed_nawaz, it does not make sense... did you add more lines in /etc/network/interfaces for eth1, or did you replace the lines of eth0 to eth1?

i have added lines for eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces
my eth0 was up earlier

you probably have default gateways set for both; one overrides the other.

Enverex, thats all i was pointing out

That's weird. Everyone says how bad the ATi drivers are and not many people use them as they use nVidia or Intel stuff, but the ATi drivers are updates in Sid more often than nVidia's... --- my reaction to that was the hardware support still sux

it just took us collectively 5billion lines to say it
kinda like windows

syed_nawaz, asg is right. only one interface can have a gateway.

or ati

the default gateway is set up for eth0 and not for eth1

pimp31415, I know, I said it was odd that considering fewer people use the stuff it's surprising the drivers get packaged faste

mm ah
agreed

the problem is solved
I have done ifup eth0
pzn and now both the interfaces are up
pzn:let me restart the system and check if the devices comes up again

pzn, interesting tho

hi who can help me with installing nvidia 5700 driver on debian

on the gateways/// the cards can have different networks obviously - but that default gateway is for the system? it sends traffic through that card by default or something?
!nvidia

for a reminder.

i got strage display after iinstalling this driver

o?

now when i restart the network only eth1 is up and eth0 is not up

I installed TVTIME for watching tv from my Pinnacle Systems tvcard, but I have no sound. TV is ok, channels is ok... suggestions ? I can play music from RhythmBox...

syed_nawaz, are they both set to auto ?

ooh

hi, I am compiling svn version of libgphoto. I get this error: libgphoto2 requires libltdl (the libtool dl* library),
which package should I install?

try speedstep-centrino

syed_nawaz, try "auto" for both

/msg dpkg search

okay, that installed fine, how do I tell if it's working?

try 'apt-get apt-get build-dep libgphoto'

what exactly are you trying to achieve?

wols, let me see if I have guessed well
Badran, I have already made that.

syed_nawaz, you are welcome

I installed TVTIME for watching tv from my Pinnacle Systems tvcard, but I have no sound. TV is ok, channels is ok... suggestions ? I can play music from RhythmBox...

asg, what is the difference?
xpm is a support picture?

one has xpm support, one doesn't. apt-cache show libgd2-noxpm ; apt-cache show libgd2-xpm

You probably need to fool around with you mixer settings.

Hi

whats the chipset in it?

I need some help, but I don't know if I'm in the right channel to ask this question.
I need to open port 80 in Firestarter (my firewall).

how to know if grub is install on hda or not?

But I don't know how, it's a GUI program.
Can somebody please help me with this?

Can anyone recommend a browser that doesn't crash more than once every 3 months and still is somewhat "modern"(whatever than means)? Firefox and Konqueror both don't have this property.

hi everrybody

if you want a "modern" browser geck and khtml is all there is

Ok, is there any way I can get a Konqueror with debugging symbols?

My php host files are offered for download. Anybody an idea wht to check?

epiphany might also be worth a look

I don't see why epiphany would be more stable than Firefox.

check that your webserver has support for php and that .php files are registered correctly to PHP

or Iceweasel*

0.9.25 to 0.9.40 ?

asg i did apt-get install php5

and did you install libapache*-mod-php5 also?

there is missing the mod_php5.c

that is not what you want. libapach2-mod-php5 is

libapache2-mod-php5 is already the newest version.

then check apache2 config files as asg said

while it might use the same rendering engine, there are other reasons iceweasel can crash. YMMV
also, restart apache and make sure to clear your browser cache (the latter often trips people up and causes frustration)

I was thinking of switching to Opera, but it doesn't support adblocking like the Adblock extension does, but stability wise I would pick that one.

yeah but i cannot fiond the mod_php5.c file, even if I did updatedb before

if you instist on using Opera, for whatever reason, point it to a squid proxy or other proxy that will do the add blocking for you.

yes, and opera doesnt segfault at all

locate mod_php5.c doesn't find anything

why would it be a c file

guys, what is format of LC_TIME ? ps manual says it obeys this variable for date format, but whatever i put in it , ps returns same time format ... and i want it to return ISO timestamp..

iirc, there won't be a .c file
.so but not .c

hi everybody

locate mod_php5 doesn't find anything

I was perfectly happy with Firefox 1.5, but after 2.0 it crashed way too often.

no
libphp5.so

it's called just php5.so iirc

what is a squid proxy?

there is /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so

apt-cache show squid

a http proxy. but for you, I'd rather use privoxy

I have just installed etch, and gdm is not working well, it displays a lot of empty squares

bad fonts
I told you to check your apach2 config

look for libphp5.so

and what font have I to install?

yeah thats the one

depends on your locale but xfonts-base should work fine

seems to work
database connection failed. but okay. know i can work with it
thanks

I don't think Privoxy can filter GMail ads.

wols, xfonts-bae is installed, and my locale is it_IT
foe example, I'm in xchat, and I can see text rows differing in height

and why not?

is it a bad idea to change from etch to lenny?

no
you can

when will lenny become stable?

not now :-)

if you see some empty rectangles instead of letters this usually happens if the program's font doesn't have those letters
WIR

what does WIR mean?

because the ads come from some domain that cannot be filtered by simple regular expressions.

then how does adblock do it?

wols, I see only empty rectangles

the DOM tree needs to be adjusted, AFAIK, but I only have limited knowledge of course.
This is CustomizeGoogle which does this, btw.

all that adblock does is blogging regex specified URLS
adblock does too

Ok, so, I can replace adblock with provoxy, but then GMail still has ads.

whhat is the URL of that ad?

how do i remove a pkg and everything else that came with it? apt-get remove only removes the specified pkg i want to remove all the extra stuff it installed as well...

learn to use aptitude

it has ads because that's how they are able to give you 2G of mail storage for free. Why are you filtering them out? If ads bother you, why not run your own webmail server.

is that suggestion supposed to help me??

Because my machine is not always on.

yes it is

asg, Unless he ever clicks any of them then it doesn't matter anyway

my question was precisely to learn how to use apt-get!

I don't know why, but apt-get install did enter this mod_php5.c

all i see in man apt-get is remove

why would it?

what other option can i use to uninstall?

I did not talk about apt-get. I talked about aptitude

ohh
sorry

"remove" is the only uninstall option apt-get has (well there is --purge, but it doesn't do much different only further specifies the remove)

seeing them is enough to plant the seed whether he clicks them or not

however aptitude won't hlpe you with your current problem. it's only for the future
google isn't paid by plating the need. they are paid by clicks

asg, Sorry but I'm not going to subscribe to your capitalist view. Ads are littered everywhere all over the world now, apparently that's their "right". It's my right to filter them out however I like.

and every need planter is wasted traffic for google

do you have an always on cable/dsl connection? If so, but a NSLU2 ($80) to run Debian and your own webmail service.

so theres no way to remove subpkgs of a pkg?

I have an always on connection, yes.
NSLU2?

they aren't my views, they are just facts of their business model.

there are debfoster and deborphan. incomplete solutions tho
they are not facts of google's business model

http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/install.html

cause google doesn't get paid for platning the need

how do i find out which font emacs is using?

#emacs

sorry, was downstairs having coffee. Have no Idea....

where can i find my mysql databases (for backup)

use mysqldump to back them up

hello

ok, that sounds like a solution too, still suitable software would work regardless on what network I am.

I have something that is accessing the disk every five seconds and making it tick - what application will tell me what is accessing the drive at a particular time?

never mind

I tried atop - it shows the activity but not what is causing it

a journallling file system such as ext3 will do this

fasta, If Google's adds are on a different domain or subdomain (ads.google.com) then you could put that in your hosts file

I'm using ext3
that simple, huh
the ticking is driving me nuts!

you can change that time. man mount

cool - I'll read up

you can change the 5sec default - possibly with tune2fs... this is not recommended

hmm

yes

because I can end up with corruption if system is reset etc. ?

my mac mini's don't make much noise...

I'd probably get it to use ext2 instead, and make sure you back it up daily.

yes

Especially since if the ticking is loud, it's probably on its way out.

maybe it's because it's sat on a box ...

now it's on a chipboard shelf on its rubber base I can't hear it
hooray

For finding a simple solution, you are guarnateed not to be a real engineer.

hey man

fasta, maher, Arafangion, thanks for the tips!

probably - try smartmontools or whatever its called to ask the disk how it feels...

ok

lol - I'd tried spinning it down using scsi-idle: that was an attempt!
ulol - I'd tried spinning it down using scsi-idle: that was an attempt!/u

Using ext2 would've done a very good job.

sure; but that server is pretty much how I like it and I didn't fancy dump/tarring it all up

just redid system completely from messing with Mandriva Corporate Desktop 4, and gentoo, and I was like, theres no place like home
is there any debian user, who is familar with source compiling? and not bad at it

My router has had the power out for ten minutes and now my Debian server won't go by "Io" anymore (its hostname), apparently only because Samba went down, because when I restarted samba it worked again. How can I prevent this from happening again?

Wouldn't have needed to. ext3 is compatible with ext2

in Debianland, there is rarely a need to compile your own code. If you need to, make sure you get the relevant -dev packages for whatever libraries are needed and generally follow the README/INSTALL that comes in the tarball.

Using ext2 would've just ignored the journal.

well, reading alot more now :-)
ya want to know a big issue I had, just recently compiled.. compiz-fusion, all of it, but when I went to start the ccsm, it requird pygtk2.10 or higher, so I got the sources right, from pygtk, and then it needed pygobject.. so I got that, configured , make and make install, then something else was up with pygtk2.10 when I tried to configure that

well smartd won't run
smartmontools has no binaries that I can use to check anything with
what do I do?

I need to study, on putting all kinds of support for compiling source packages, I mean the works on development
python, mono, gcc, etc
got all these books, I sure need to read em ;-)

anyone know the fastest mirror for new york city?
btw, I have the worst case of heartburn ever
can anyone help with that?

Tagamet

I tried to drink some pepto about an hour ago
drank a mouthful
about two tablespoons, tagamet?

well, I"m going to read a bunch of books on debian thats for sure, I was reading some, but I' can be bad at reading..
just have to stay focus ,

focused

yes, focused

heartburn
my entire insides are burning up

now I"m going to see about tweaking out that package, to work for compiz-fusion

feels like I could breath fire if i wanted to

go to your local drug store and get some Tagamet, it'll do the job unless you have diverticulitis or other esophagial issues and then you need a prescription for Asiphex.

oh and, the other day, I learned how to write a shell script, that was so cool

I ate too much right before I went to bed

sorry about your heartburn

I had the munchies

why does xserver-xorg depens on _all_ xserver-xorg-video-* drivers? has anyone used all drivers on a single machine so far?

Hi.. I need some help with my internet.. Around 5 am this morning, my internet just went down, I did "dhclient" "ifup/down" and nothing worked. So I rebooted 2 times and nothing worked. So I shut down my computer and went to bed, and yet again when i booted the internet didn't work. So i rebooted again after doing the "dhclient" and "ifup" thingy and all of a sudden it just worked.. Can anyone tell me what i should do?

your ISP broke?

the hardware, is going to utilize the driver it needs to work

I have vmware workstation 6 to install

have you fsck'd it lately?

anyone know some devices can be shown as both sda and hda?

you might try downing the box and re-seating the cables and cards (if the controller isn't onboard)

I did

you are running dhcpcd on a machine that is also a client of itself?

I don't have any AP around, so I am testing with a windows machine running AdHoc mode
iwconfig eth2 up
iwconfig eth2 mode Ad-Hoc

oh man
I can feel a burp coming
soon as I can burp I should feel alright

asg, I hve no idea.. I havn't changed any network thingys since i installed the machine a week ago..

Nyle, do you have a question related to Debian?

yes

well, ask it then

I have many questions
not right now, maybe later

well shut the fuck up then

I need help here

well you're rude

still, are you running your own dhcp server or is your ISP providing it?

my ISP

Nyle, if you want to chat, try #debian-chat

it seems like a hw problem... all the scans I ran were fine. Host bus error means what exactly/
blow me.

host bus is generally the IDE/SCSI controller.

hmm
I did take this 500gb disk from an older pc and put it in this new pc

stoned, can I buy some of that "make me stoned substans" from you?
xP

the cables are plugged in all the way and fine
you gonna get me yelled at, shush

it's hard to say bit if you have another machine on your network besides the ISP dhcp server, they could be in contention. Also, it appears that NetworkManager is contending with another dhclient process.

what about lost interrupt?

asg, and that means in the noobielanguage?
:P

hello

you know my heartburn feels loads better now
yippy, I get to install fglrx

I'd shut down the NetworkManager thingy for the time being and see if the same issues are observed.

!seen thingfish

'oh nm'.

I don't know who thingfish is.

who the fuck is JuStIcIa_

asg, ok.. i see.. Can I do something about it

who owns you

if you connect a 4 pin molex to the sata hdd power instead of sata power cable does it make a difference?

anyone on PowerPC ?

I wouldn't think so
yes
I have a powerbook 3400c with sarge on it

hi all. 'netstat | grep 8020' tells me: 'tcp 12 0 netpd.org:8020 firewall.snm-hgkz:53823 CLOSE_WAIT' . therefore i cannot use that port right now. how can i definitively close that port, so that it gets freed again?

3400 is oldworld I think

yup
1997-1998

it should be free in a minute

I'm on ibook, I'm reading the guide provided in #debianppc topic but I think it's a bit different from my situation, actually I have only OS X and I have no Apple_Bootstrap

I never owned or used a mac with os9

liable, but i think it doesn't. it is in that state since yesterday.

I dunno

liable, anyway, i'll try waiting a bit.

tpc has a bit of a wait after a session is closed, should,nt be more than 2 minutes though

liable, that is what i experience in most of the cases, but not here....

hi ,once downloaded a kernel bz2 package just uncompress then type ./configure && make menuconfig ?

oh man I tried to load a dvd from this HDD thats giving errors, and its really REALLY slow read speed

rdz, set the time to lower then

are you seeing seek errors in the log?

hdd was working fine an hour ago in the old system

cyzie, where can i do that?

no seek errors
none

not asg

stoned using 2.6.20~ ?

no idea on that. http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~tjuerges/ALMA/Kernel/libata/ch07.html might have some info

no
I'm on etch, default kernel

i just mention because on ubuntu feisty there is a bug similar to that error
but nm

stoned, what's the voltage that drive needs ?

np
rdz,

well, In my old pc it was connected with 4 pin molex and not sata power
it worked fine without errors
I'm not sure but I have a 530W psu

okay, so we rule that out

dual 12+

bye

its a perty high end psu

well.. some satas has 15 pins instead of 4

ewhy would it? 12V and 5V are 12V and 5V
no matter the connector

stoned, i have 4 HDD in my pc (not to mentioend other parts) and a 400w PSU

what PSU brand btw?

it's not your psu

HIPER or HIPEC or something

HIPER

norwegia?

For non initrd kernels on a machine using sata drives with lvm, what crucial modules need to be hard coded in the kernel?

ata4.00: tag 0 cmd 0x25 Emask 0x20 stat 0x51 err 0x84 (host bus error)
I keep getting these errors

is it even possible to put / on a lvm and not use initrd?
tpyically you need root fs, and drivers for the disk that is on inside the kernel
cable or controller is my guess. or disk electronics

stoned, what eerors?

I just pasted the errors
look up

I never thought of the lvm issue - maybe I will recompile with initrd.

I have over 140+ movies in dvd on there and like 100gb music and some porn too

try it again with your old machine

its important data man
I can't I sold it

get a proper cable then if it's that precious

I did lvm on an install but have not rolled my own kernel in some time

I tried with 3 different brand new sata cables

can you unplug anything? use less power?

if it still doesn't work, plug it off.. might be libata
I still suspect low power
last time I had I/O error, it was caused by a half-powered IDE usb adapter

well I've got a core 2 duo @ 1.275V @ 3500MHz, 0.1+ to FSB/MCH, 0.2+ to vDimm, DVDRW/CDRW, X1900 XTX, 2 SATA2 HDD, 6 FANS, thats all I think
530W HIPER PSU

hmm, is it possible to put /boot/ on a LVM and will grub find the kernel then?

bbl.. need to reboot in windows to ix my sis comp

i think you need grub2 for that

seems like it: googling says "GRUB has support for LVM and RAID since version 1.95"

hey petemc
what happened to your tail?

hi, the amount of warning during compilation of kernel depends on the source itself or something's wrong within the compiler (e.g. old version)?

hey
I think I stopped getting the error message
and the drive works fine now

did you job a spliff in the cdrom?

I put some force into it and pushed all the cable connection sin
I looked at dmesg|grep ata and I still saw the errors but I don't get them in terminal window anymore randomly

warning levels are set in the Makefile used to initiate the kernel build.

50-100 warning during compile anmd standard settings are normal ?

then the errors have gone from emergencies to simple warnings

or something is geetting wrong e.g. i may have an outdated libc _?

there are often lots of warnings since the kernel hackers do things that contravene what the compiler allows for various reasons.

ok so it's normal thx

isn't the default compilre for the kernel still 3.3 or such?

cat /proc/version

!tell atula boot

as now booting occurs in this way: a cd pre-boots then switchs to usb device to continue booting (since my pc doesn't boot from usb directly) with such a config how do i tell system to use the new kernel ? mean--as far as now grub appears only once (from cd)

sarge was 3.3 and woody was 2.95

i believe the kernel docs still say 2.95

in such a way that if the new kernel doesn't work i can still boot the old

hmmm.... heh. what's the equivalent to the redhat chkconfig --add package?

update-rc.d and rcconf

cool. I'll man those. thanks

not what debian uses but what is the officially designated kernel compiler
and that and sually is even older than what debian uses

ah, my mistake.

asg, well.... how about modules? ^^

hi. how can i find out, which process uses the tcp-port 8020?

modules?
fuser, lsof, netstat

asg, ... okie... "modprobe ndiswrapper"?

asg, lsof what?

asg, I don't feel like typing it each time when I turn on comp...

lsof | grep 8020 ... or fuser -v 8020/tcp
just add ndiswrapper to /etc/modules

asg, thank you a lot

hmm... lemme see that file.

you could also modprobe it in a pre-up stanza in /etc/network/interfaces but that's up to you.

asg, thank you

well ok then errors are down, maybe its the sata cables
I dunno

i solve my problem

cool

!dmm

factoid (/msg dpkg marillat)

right, just add 'ndiswrapper' on the line before or after loop
has your transfer rate improved or is it still slow?

asg, graciASS!

how can i find info about the 'ggtick' command? i can't remember having it installed myself

man ggtick

asg, unfortunately there is not man-page, that is why i ask

if there isn't a manpage, apt-get install apt-file ; apt-file update ; apt-file search bin/ggtick (find the package and then look in /usr/share/doc/pkg/*)

When Debian is being installed, it says 'the first connected network interface found has been selected'.

asg, hey cool, you are great help and i learn much with your hep

How is it determined which NIC is found first?
PCI bus order? Module load order?

loaded in the order it's found on the bus

So in a box with an onboard chip, that will always be eth0?

hi!
i would like to ask that someone of you have dedicated server and could divede it
?

Until the OS is installed, at least.

I'm Poland
Dedicated server with ssh installed.

should be

Do you know which package I could dive into to find out for sure?

lspci should show you the ordered enumeration. dmesg will also tell you once you've booted a kernel.

I mean the installer.
Which part of the installer determines how thi NICs are loaded?

I think they are already enumerated by the time the kernel has booted. If not, it should be the 'setup network part'

where does the run application dialog program (gnome) store the names & paths of the programs its aware of?

now that I'm back on debian I miss the cube of beryl
I can't get it now cuz I have some shitty drivers for 3d

given how much you smoke, can't you just imagine it?

lol
man after 5 months of being sober I wanted to party this weekend
I'm actually not that high
my heartburn is gone though
milk kicks ass

Hello. I have a question. Got my old laptop running just now, with a very old install of Debian. When I'm goint to run the apt-update, I notice that there's no debian-non-US/dists/unstable

/msg dpkg crypto in main

instead it's potato, woody, sarge and what not
ok then

how can I restart the usb daemon/service?

there is stable/unstable ... but maybe your mirror is dead ?

I should really redo my partitions. I've got a 40gb xp, 16gb oblivion, rest freespace, 10gb debian, 450gb home, 1gb swap

I updated to ftp.se.debian.org, and in dists, there's no "unstable"

if you want unstable, you can use "sid"
thats if mirror does not map it (which is weird)

exact url did you use?

I haven't used Debian for a couple of years. The browser installed is Firebird 0.6.1

woody?

I have no idea

hi there channel

Need to get 292MB/292MB of archives. After unpacking 55.7MB will be used. -- this is what happens on a pretty much daily basis with sid

stew, URL to the apt-thing?

its a pain in the patoot, and then you gotta read the changelogs at least kinda

cat /etc/debian_version

yes, exactly what url are you trying to use for that mirror

testing/unstable it says

becuase that mirror has unstable, if you aren't finding it, you probably aren't using the right url

what mirror do you use? which is a good one for nyc? I am using osuosl right now

must be post-potato / pre-woody since woody had firebird 1.5

how can I restart the usb daemon/service?

oh well.. actually right, sid would never give real version

firebird was like arond 0.7~ish version

stew, ftp://ftp.se.debian.org/debian-non-US/dists/unstable/non-US/non-free/binary-i38

usb daemon?

1.5 is firefox

But, there's no unstable.

that's non-US, which isn't around anymore

as I said
yeah

heh, actually, I was wrong. firebird 1.5 was the database, not the browser.

there is no more non-US

you want debian, not debian-non-US

!tell jkamzi about crypto in main

I see

mirrors.kernel.org / ftp.us.debian.org (both of which have osuosl in the rotation, iirc). debian.uchicago.edu and there is one in rutgers that is usually fast

\amethyst: yeah

What do you mean by the USB daemon?

\amethyst: i had to use sysrq to kill all but init - usb devices don't mount, as well as don't appear in /dev/sd*

probably you want to start udev, which manages device nodes

hi, a pentium 3 is i586 ?

\amethyst: ok

i686

/etc/init.d/udev start

ok thanks

its a i386 or a 686 depending on the context

Hooray. It worked.
Thanks everyone.

asg, Now I had the same thing.. My internet went down, and the only thing that helped was a reboot.. I tried "ifdown eth1 && ifup eth1" and "dhclient" several times and still it wouldn't go back online..

\amethyst: yay, it worked. thanks!

asg, and it all happened when I was downloading in high speed

in the future try "modprobe -r drivername ; modprobe drivername" then /etc/init.d/networking restart

which context ?

ok stew

I can reliably crash iceweasel from testing and unstable by scrolling though http://forum.nedlinux.nl/viewtopic.php?id=26078 - when i get to the 'Code' bit

stew, isn't there a way to prevent that it goes down..
?

anyone else see this? Removing flashplugin-nonfree didn't help.

post the pastebin link you posted earlier and let stew have a look

stew, If i get a new network pci card, is there a possibility that this problem stops?

is your /etc/network/interfaces empty, or is there stuff in there?

weird...

stew, ill check

so what should I do, file a bug report with the stacktrace?
not sure how to further trace this problem

no networking connection

/msg dpkg reportbug

stew, there is some stuff in there..

have you checked the BTS to see if the same bug has been reported?

afaik, there shouldn't be, since you are running network-manager

ok..

but i've never used network-manager

try safe mode too

i've googled around and found a similar one for Ubuntu, haven't looked at the BTS specifically

I've no clue what that is stew. But sure ^^

i'd check /usr/share/doc/network-manager to verify it

stew, hm.. I guess i do use that then ^^

huh? what do you mean?

stew, nvm..

good idea, but crashes in safemode, too

Ehm.. but.. Should i try commenting everything in the /etc/network/interface
and see if the problem stops coming back?

musicmatch. What's the Debian equivalent ?

amarok

erik, xmms, amarok, audacious

xmms

amarok for me the most awsome there is

I hate amarok

well if what asg says is true, that you have 3 dhcp clients running, i'd try to eliminate two of them. network-manager is obviously responsible for at least one of them, if you have stuff in /etc/network/interfaces that could cause another.

Its a "i want to be itunes thingy"

did you run dhcpcd yourself?

vlc powa!
it supports some winamp skins!

stew, nope o_O

imho

yeah vlc is sexy too :P

stew, So.. What should i do? Im kindofa newb as you probably know..

rhythmbox looks kind of itunish

hmm.... Does GRUB work with Vista?

sure

the correct question would be does vista work with grub

Yes. It does.

what a shame..

even with tri booting linux, XP, vista

Anyone know of an easy way I can run a little webserver on a Debian box to test a page I put together without using priviledges? I could install Apache on my dev box and set it up properly, but that'd be a pain and it seems quite excessive.

heh

windows

have a look at exaile!

you could use lighttpd

tvynr, sensibly speaking, just use apache

I'll take a look, thanks.

its not that excessive.

lighthttp

I guess I'd have to reinstall Linux
just in case vista turn their drives into NTFS

why?

It's a great deal more work than I'd like to put forth. And the user isn't part of my group, so I'd have to fiddle with permissions and so forth. :-/

plus I have to adjust free space too...
hmm how do I mount a UDF DVD? mount -t udf /dev/hda?

!key

i guess key is Install the latest debian-archive-keyring package to get the latest gpg key used to sign the Debian archive

not that I'd ever run Vista to begin with, but if I were to, and it wrote over my Debian with NTFS that would be the last time it ever booted

XP did that when I installed it

if you want really small, micro-httpd might also work (only 150 lines of code)

guess Linux then Windows doesn't work!

itll just be overwriting the bootloader, surely not the partitions other than C?
itll just be overwriting the bootloader, surely not the partitions other than C?

pebkac?

Yup.

never gave me a choice

Actually, I was looking for something braindead I could run as a user with minimal effort. "Make localhost:12345 be ~/project/www". I guess I should just cope with apache, though.

"$ mount -t udf /cdrom || mount: only root can do that"

lighttpd is a pretty braindead installation. While powerful, it is pretty minimal out of the box. I haven't run micro-httpd but I'd look at it.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=G6LcXi9F8Bk what city is this ????

Hmm.
I had a problem with a scsidrive -.-

look at thttpd
thttpd -p 12345 -d ~/project/www would work

follow-up on music player/musicmatch: xmms, amarok and audacious are just winamp-look-alikes, it seems. nothing full-screen/easy-to-read/edit/sort/choose

Ooo, thanks.

beware the etch thttpd init.d script is buggy

there's a ton of itunes clones too, i guess people dont know what you want

How so? I'm having to use Etch at the moment because Lenny's fakechroot is broken.

it doesn't sound like you're needing it, but in the BTS are a few fixes, the issue is with /etc/init.d/thttpd stop|restart, it doesn't detect if thttpd is running correctly due to a poorly concieved grep

have you filed a bug on fakechroot yet?

Yeah. I couldn't really get any information, though.

do you actually use network-manager?

So I just had to say that unstable fakechroot spews a ridiculous lot of error messages.

what version of network-manager is installed?
oh, hmm is avahi not a dependency of network-manager? don't know why he got that pulled in too otherwise

What app do I need to convert bin/cue files to ISO format?

bchunk

asg and stew ; Same thing happened again. Thats the third time today..

what version of debian are you running?

debian lenny

do you actually use network-manager?

no..
Not what i know...
^^

is it possible to to install java jre for stable etch?

what exactly is happening?

edistar, All of a sudden the internetconnection just breaks..

do you have vmware installed?

And i cant get it up without rebooting
no, i do not have wmware
vm*

what does /var/log/syslog say?

did you try unloading and reloading the kernel module instead of rebooting?
the next time it breaks, can you capture the output of "ifconfig -a ; route -n" while it is broken?

hello!

also try an ifdown interface and then ifup interface
hello!

how is everyone?

peachy

no he shouldn't be using those

edistar, been there done that

peachy!
peach is my nickname

stew, and that modprob thingy didn't work

ifdown / ifup should be doing nothing becuase you shouldn't have anything in interfaces becuase you are using network-manager

like princess peach from mario

!tell linuxchick about OT

whats the topic tonight?
ot?

debian.

debian end user support

why not?

becuase his /etc/network/interfaces should be empty becuase he is using network-manager

ah...
why use network-manager?

I dont even know what network-manager is.. so :P

do you mean why does he use it? or why would one use it in general?

i'm having a tough time figuring out how to mound a usb dvd drive
mount*

/msg dpkg usb-storage

anyone here good at city searching ?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=G6LcXi9F8Bk

plug it in, turn it on, run dmesg and see what its cooled

i cannot figure out what city this is

i'm sorry i'm still a little new to linux

why not google for city mary j blige and the name of the song.

i did try googleing though

s/cooled/called even

asg, i did

what do you need slack?

i was trying ot figure out what city that was

then ask #musicnerds or somesuch, your question isn't remotely debian related

Please Shell Account

jersey city

hmm

is it possible to install the new java 6.0 jre version in stable

http://pastebin.ca/598716 stew edistar there is the last log from this downtime..

at least, I haven't seen that video, but I suspect that's which one it is

rahul, i dont think so

ask in #debian-pl or #debian.pl

well, let me see the video :P

http://youtube.com/watch?v=G6LcXi9F8Bk

is there a apt-get program that will mount usb devices?

rahul: please take it elsewhere, #debian-offtopic perhaps

linuxchick, why would apt mount thing?
things*

sorry
i was just curious

"apt-get program"? usb devices are taken care of by, among other bits, the kernel, udev, and an automounter

and couldnt find out which one it was

linuxchick meant a program that can be installed via apt-get

stew, Ah.. i see
:P

i've been trying to mount this dvd burner for about 6 hours now and i'm real tired

what version of debian are you running? do you use gnome? or what windowing environment

i'm just looking for an easy way out i guess

if you're mounting it by hand, the dvd drive will be /dev/sdX1

xfce

thunar should automount that, linuxchick

why use network manager in general?

It owns server ssh?

I'm not using it... so I am a little confused.. never tried actually

linuxchick, Is it a USB dvd?

how does one use it?

not debating, but would an optical disk come up as sdX or sdX1?

it does automatic network discovery and gives you a little icon to click on to choose from available networks and such

it is a dvd in a usb/fw case

i've never used it though

is it very reliable?

i thought they usually came up as the first partition?

nobody in here is going to give you a shell account, nobody in here knows anyone in Poland that has one either. Google it.

and is it the default
?

no

stew, Then i dont use it.. Cause i dont have any icon like that

i know there is a command for term that will tell me the location of the drive but i forgot it

well my pata connected optical drives one mounts /dev/hda{a,b}

its not the default. since i've never used it, i don't know anything about its reliability

okey
thanks

any help?

hmm. you're probably right :P

it should be /dev/dvd
what does "uname -r" say?

does it set DNS and so on as well?

so.. * mount /dev/dvd ?
but it's usb...

you'd need to tell it where you want it to be mounted unless you have an entry in /etc/fstab

cause then I could use it in my nokia

it uses dhcp so yes

okey

it said cant find dev/dvd
there isn't a gui for mounting?

If the only two ip6tables rules issued are '-P INPUT DROP' and '-A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT', using TCP from the machine in question should be possible, right? (just tripple-checking before filing a bug)

i dont care if i have training wheels

there is a mounting plugin

;p
i would love that

for the different desktops

i just need to mount this drive and burn a dvd of my band

which desktop do you have?

xfce

nice

plug it in turn it on, paste [to http://rafb.net/paste/ the output of dmesg - hopefully it will be obvious what to do from there

and ask in #xfce

but i like you guys

lol

ii dont want to leave...
i*

you can join two rooms at once :o

only on irc though

i dont want to be a linux slut

yeh ok

1 room at a time..
lol
ok...

additionally

you guys know it totally sucks being a girl thats into linux

dude stfu

girl?

linuxchick, Yes, all that attention from all the guys wanting to help, must really suck

bs johnny. its like girls in any male dominated field, you get a million guys falling over to help you

xD

huh?
not at all

is this entertaining to you
wasting our time?

Ever noticed females when using computers feel the need to announce it?

people make fun of me and blow me off all the time

(announce that they are female I mean)

women usually don't
fakers do

just want to help, but you're pushing it a little :P

you asked, we helped. you are the center of attention atm, how is any of this hard?

just cut it, who cares?

i'm sorry i went off topic

Crap, wrong button
