hi, I was here last night asking for help on setting up a mail server host on my debian machine so that I can recieve/send mail using my debian server
I can receive mail just fine, but the problem that I'm having is sending mail
could someone help me check and troubleshoot my issue ?
look in /var/log/mail.info
hey Lemming whats up
I use to make you blow yourself when I was a kid
To set up my mail server what else do I need besides postfix and dovecot-imapd?
back on the old mac machines
Trying to get debian on an usb flash stick, and Bushmills is helping me out a lot
lemmings kick ass
indeed
an mx record in your zonefile would help
good man, debian is awesome
I'm sorry but I don't know what that means
thanks Bushmills I should've thought about that first thing to do is always check logs
read up on mail relays, dns zones etc. etc.
http://rools.ath.cx/peter/photo/2007-05-02-blockerlaptop/IMG_0224.jpg
made that one :3
lets the rest of the world know how to find your mail server when sending mail to you
Is jffs2 also 0x83?
freakin sweet
no
you're on ubuntu aren't you?
or just gnome?
a live cd, but yes
Following a couple tutorials, I've got authentication through winbind working well enough that I can log into a console using a windows domain host account, but I cant' log into X with it. After logging into the console I've even got a home dir at
/home/DOMAIN/username. What am I missing still?
mom's laptop
your mom uses linux?
no, livecd
thats freakin sweet
oh
its still pretty sweet
could possibly get her to
at least shes checking out
as she doesn't use more than word and firefox
"log into X"??
can anyone help me with dvd burner installation?
*think*
!anyone
no, still my live cd
polls
Hi, is there a program to solve simple equations on the console?
Yeah.
Wait.
maxima
thx!
How do I use maxima?
I just installed it... I can't figure it out.
wow 31,2MB for maxima and its depends... is there something more lightwight?
I cannot find it in the list
lol "I just installed it... I can't figure it out." how long did you do to figure it out ?
honschu, tried dc ?
Lol.
jffs2 is a file system, not a partition type. you can leave type on 83, for linux. "no" means, it has no partition type, is it isn't one.
as it isn't one
ok, thanks again
which xorg driver will work with mach64 (ati radeon mobility m6)?
ati
Ooops.
I just typed rm * in my home directory.
Lol.... Shit.
"Partition table entries are not in disk order" - ignore that and just write?
hey. having some problems with a 3ware raid-5 array of 12x500GB (5.5TB usable as /dev/sda). It refuses to create partitions which are larger than 1018GB. The platform is a 64bit AMD. Tried the stock kernel and a compiled vanilla 2.6.21.5.
fine
how do i remove all TRACES of apache2, it doesnt want to get rid of those other packages that were installed as dependencies for apache2.. and i dont know what they are
i'd remove the subdirectories too.
or how do i check what were the last few packages installed in the order they were installed?
Lol.
Decepticon try deborphan
You're really funny.
my hard disc crashed, 3 days ago
Lol.
if it installed things like php, then they don't "depend" on apache and will need to be removed manually
drm won't work
drm is deprecated as I know
expect no 3d with mach64 (iirc)
why?
I think 3d has been supported starting with early radeons
cause it's damn old
ext2 boot, 2nd partition, 16 meg(ish), bootable flag, rest as a jffs2 drive, partition 1
bootable flag doesn't matter
ok, good
and mach64 3d is barely useful. I had a 4mb card a couple of years ago
that's for ms bootloader mainly
Gnash 0.8.0 was updloaded for review by the FTP Masters a while ago (maybe a couple weeks). Where can I find out what is stalling it from entering unstable?
wanna play urbanterror on my laptop
you will have to buy a new laptop then
Manually mkfs.ext2?
for the boot
go ahead
Is it possible to use the debian installer to install into an nfs root (on another machine)?
sad but true
hello
apt-get checks the integrity (md5 or something) of the files in /var/cache/apt/archives before using them?
no
ups. yes
misread
hi all!
Do I want to specify any flags, such as reserved blocks, or just go?
use fsck or badblocks
I'm trying to umount my iPod, I have no term on it, and I get a "device is busy" error, any tips?
mmm.. what happens it the file is not correct. Does it get reloaded again / the user is warned / ?
apt-get refuses to install it, the user is warned
ok.. so, in an apt-get dist-upgrade, with a wrong dowloaded file... this file isn't installed, the other packages which deppend on said file aren't installed... and the rest of packages are installed?
Out-of-the-box ext2, and a jffs2 as I want it then?
probably. but it might stop somewhere in the middle though
Why would I want to run badblocks?
or fsck
Also mkfs.jffs2, -r/-d/--root=DIR - should any of those be supplied?
"Build file system from directory DIR", current dir by default
is there something like dpkg --check-if-downloaded-correctly foo.deb ?
(to check the md5sum or the integrity or whatever is done, for a shellscript )
dpkg --no-act -i maybe
I'm using the testing repository and being told that build-essential conflicts with utils-linux
which is required
is that wrong?
for a package to conflict with a required system package?
paste full error to paste.debian.net
ok
I am doing a dirty multi-mirror axel-based apt-downloader... but i don't trust axel too much. I will try this --no-act -i
er, no error, Synaptic just says it's going to uninstall utils-linux
and the properties for utils-linux say required
try with apt-get/aptitude

hi I'm trying to setup a mail server host on my debian machine, and I can receive emails just fine from my gmail acct
but I can't send emails except to my username@localhost
any help ?
(connect to gmail.com[72.14.253.83]: Connection timed out)
any ideas on what could cause this ?
ehm.. noobquestion here: How do i uninstall Opera? It was installed with a "sh install.sh" thingy
intending to use gmail as smarthost?
what ?
1. why does your mail server try to connect to google?
2. on that address does google not have a mail server listening.
follow instructions in readme or luck for uninst dir or similar
luck=look
damn
I tried to send a test msg to my gmail acct
MoDaX, ok.. thx
Is it possible, that game runs too fast ?
how do you resolve dedicated ip hosting addresses?
using some dns addresses in /etc/resolv.conf
I typed host gmail.com and all the mx record info showed correctly
there are wonderful .debs available for opera, both static hosting and dynamic
MoDaX, There was no "readme" or such
:P
but i386 onlx :-(
nn, ok.. but i installed it by downloading it from operas homepage ^^
adn flash didn'r work out so well in opera
at lease not directly after installation
but po-in-f83.google.com, which is the ip address your mailer wants to connect to, is not in the google mx list. and there is no smtp server listening on that one.
but i use a Beta flash so i guess thats why
flash is bs anyway
hey can anyone help me to get midi to work? I get the following when I try to play a midi file with timidity http://rafb.net/p/ERAT7C38.html
in doubt you might find an answer in the very helpful opera forum on opera.com
I know..
for what purposes do you need flash?
im already there
^^
the mx records may *show* but your mailer doesn't try to send to any of those
nn, have you ever heard of youtube?
^^
kind of
think about it
twobitsprite you just did
so what should I do to fix it ?
Hey, what's up with this ^^ crap these days? What does it mean anyway?
What does the -r/-d/--root=DIR flags mean? "Build file system from directory DIR"
by, golly, I just did! :P (??)
mkfs.jffs2 btw
find out why your mail server tries to send to a different ip address than one of the mx records
ok, any suggestions or tips on how could I go about doing that ?
twobitsprite you "kind of" have an idea of what he's talking about
I'm not even sure I "kind of" have an idea of what _you're_ talking about :P
I now i see.. Opera and my BETA flash driver didnt work out so well
for building a file system from existing directories. like you do with mkisofs, for example.
woot it works now
Seems I can only build a jffs2 from an existing directory?
give me 10 minutes for undusting my crystal ball. it can surely give me all the information you have, and i don't. like, what mail server you're running, and some other completely irrelevant configuration details.
i used that a while ago. ... let me think how i did that .. i think i created an empty file, build a jffs2 files system from it, and dd'ed that one to the flash device.
you could always use pyching
what made it easier for me was that i didn't have to partition, i could just use the whole device
private
so file size = device size
thanks for your help, it was 2 config lines
that I had put recently today from a website that I read
it works now
And if I want to put debian on it, do I use some other tool, or simply copy files on to it?
I'm *really* new to these kind of things, as you may have noticed
and have no idea how the system boots/starts up, etcetera
Lemming, pstree
hi people
I'm new using debian
Man, you have high opinions of us all! Most of us are droids, not people!
Who said people outrank droids?
ok, sorry
I need some help
with what?
bpun, cool
To be honest, I'm not sure. I've been confused ever since I read about Susan Calvin
./ufo: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by ./ufo)
how can i solve that
?
"ufo" is not compiled properly for your system.
Lemming, pick up any book, but there's plenty of documentation -http://debian.org/doc
ok, thanks
one question more, how can i change the repositories to install gLibc2.5
56674r
wopsj
adjusting keyboard
Aumix solved the sound problems
for now, at least
Any on getting debian on a flash stick with jffs2, from start to finish?
I'm soo lost.
You don't.
what disconnection message I had
The fundamental problem is that the program isn't compiled for your system, which means EVERYTHING is conflicted.
?
104 (Connection reset by peer))
thx
yw
Lemming, i gave you a link.. check out how to put debian on a stick..
thanks
ok, so, do you mean that i can't run that?
Not as it stands, no.
And it is extremely non-trivial to upgrade libc
(For any distro or system)
what can i do?
recompile ufo for your system
I'm on etch and I cannot find tremulous in repository, is it normal?
hi
ok, tanks a lot, ans sorry about my english.
!info tremulous etch

so I should see it, do I have to enable contrib ?
yes
damn I hate tasksel
so don't use it
!dpkg gpg
Is it worth the trouble getting a JFFS2 partition in?
for a moment there, I read that as haskell
I selected the desktop environment and then it took 1 and half hour to get everything
that's why no one uses it
Why can't mkfs.jffs2 work as easily as the other mkfs
this is my first installation in years
ok
Lemming, jffs is crap
for an usb flash drive too?
Lemming, just follow given instructions and stop trying to install another method..you're just wasting time..
GPG error: http://debian.fastweb.it etch Release: Unknown error executing gpgv
is this related to etch key ?
will give it a spin then, bpun
just a warning ?
what package is 'lp' printing utility in?
!search
to find factoids containing thing. see http://wiki.debian.org/WhereIsIt
helo_ for me it's cupsys-client
what's the standard debian repository ?
so I'm thinking about switching to debian over kubuntu, is there anything I should be aware of, or any advice you might have?
that should be debian _from_ kubuntu...
thanks suppaman
why does build-essential need to uninstall utils-linux???
util-linux
shouldn't I simpy add contrib after main in sources.list ?
anything? do it? don't do it? watch out for bears?
what did you expect ?
I was told to try with apt-get instead of synaptic
go for it!
unfortunately synaptic had updated something that killed my ethernet so I had to reinstall to try it
I'm trying to install debian on a laptop with a pcmcia cdrom drive but have had no luck. Anybody have any experienc with this? oh, and to be sure I've tried other distros and the install works fine...
but... it seems to me no package should require uninstalling required system packages
this is with testing
I'm tired
bye
my mouse has a thumb button, button #6 (the scroll wheel is 2, 4, 5). currently it behaves as a duplicate of the middle button. i recall there being a really simple way to get it working in my X configuration, but i cant find it anywhere. help?
hi there
is someone here have build a webdav under debian ? I have some issues whith mod_dav : configure: error: Your APXS installation is broken and cannot be used.
hello, i have a debian box with 2 internet connections ( eth1 (4bmit) and eth2(2,5mbit) ) and the internal lan interface is eth0 ( e1000 gbit ), what is the best way to go from here ? i would like to have 2 private subnets on eth0 each using it`s own route but i'm a bit confused if having 2
default gw`s will not be a problem when not using dinamic default gw`s ( like in changing the gw for each outgoing connection )
hi all
I install windows again on my PC so I lost grub instalation, so I need to enter to my linux booting from the CD and next i will run the script to install again grub, but I can't boot with the kernel of my CD
What I need to do?
|messiah| you can use the debian install cd to reinstall grub ( boot into advanced mode and select install grub )
I try to put linux root=/dev/hda1 ro initrd=
on the prompt of the CD
but didn't work
|messiah| you could try mounting your drive somewhere, then do a chroot and install it from aptitude.
Can I start with the kernel of the CD but mounting my drive?
from the CD I didn't know how to do it
If they're the same version (the cd and the system) it should work
I'm not sure otherwise, but like mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/somedir; chroot /mnt/somedir
At least that's the first thing I'd try, and I'm just guessing
Can I get a list of every package installed on my computer and easily put it inside a text file?
!installed
To list installed packages, COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l |awk '/^[hi]i/{print $2}'; man dpkg; man grep; man awk; If you use aptitude, try aptitude search -F '%100p' '~i!~M';
file.txt
ok, but in the prompt of the boot CD what I have to put?
# right?
hi good afternoon guys
I have finally been able to setup a mail server in my debian machine
you can also pass dpkg -l to |sort
and I can successfully send & receive msgs
but whenever I read a msg the system moves it to ~/mbox
is this something common ?
floppyears, why is that such a bad thing?
I was just accostumed to all the mail being in 1 folder
hi. ./configure says, that I need to have 'the X11 libraries and headers installed'; does anyone know which package(s) I need?
is this common in debian and other unix systems ?
floppyears, no clue, but it's prboably configurable..
|messiah| you shouldn't have to use anything if it's a livecd. You just mount it somewhere and chroot to that place and it's like you booted into it (for the most part)
after the cd's booted that is
clacker, i wouldn't use such an analogy.. none of the silly bootscripts are actually booted in chroot
true, it would probably only work if they were the same release
|messiah|, if your cddrive is messed- i think there's a grub for winbloze and you can access your grub setting file with an e2fsexplorer program.. or whichever way is good for you..
clacker is not a liveCD
is the minimun installation CD of debian
ahh
cool thanks bpun
floppyears, what's your mta?
I have a prompt when I start from the CD, but i don't know how to access
to the linux extension
floppyears, i'm presuming exim is what you're using the #exim team would know well..
please take a look at this image for what
anyone ?
micky, not sure on the specifics but assuming you are doing masquerade you can probably set it up to route traffic on a per-connection basis
it would give you better load balancing at any rate
puddingpimp_work could you point me to some docs on that ? yes i'm dooing masquerade
micky, what do yo umean you have two internet connections?
bpun i have 2 connections to the internet ( both on ethernet conenctions ) take a look at the image i posted
there is none
http://86.104.141.8/network/topology.jpg
micky, I herd it's possible, I don't know exactly where to start though, I've never done it myself
www.lartc.org - they talk about exactly this sort of thing
micky, what you want to do is make a virtual network interface to merge eth1+eth2, and have eth1+eth2 on 'multilink' -- am no expert on this but is what i presume what you want to do..
micky, and it means unless you have rules for certain things, you won't be able to predict what address your connections are coming from, might cause problems with some webpages and the like
How can I start my debian with the CD of instalation?
bpun, you can only do that if they both go to the same place and said place also supports multilink
i've done it before but i used 2 default gateways wich are changed on a per connection basis ... imagine running a torrent application that has 50+ connections.. the server would have to change your gateway for each conenction
*AKA Channel bonding
micky, you could just change the gateway once a second, wouldn't provide perfect balancing, but once a connection has an address assigned it will carry on using that interface (AFAICR)
micky, why not use a virtual interface that doesn't have as it's gateway changed? what is changing exactly?
bad hack
using eth2 ( like 2 separate servers
bpun what do you mean ?
Hello, i have 4 computers with debian. One of them is a firewall/router and file server. Could someone recommend me a protocol / program that supports sharing the mp3s on that server in real time ( streaming ). Also, the server doesn't have X installed so it would be great if there is a web
interface to choose the music that is being played.
micky, the correct thing to do is to get an AS number and setup BGP, but that requires you to register an IP range and requires your isp(s) to be cooperative
micky, if eth0 routed to the virtual interface, i don't see why you should have two gateways to worry about, if eth0 would be really looking at one..
FernandoMM, icecast?
FernandoMM, there's also webmin, there may be a mod for supporting its gui for that as well..
bpun so i should use the first case in my image ? use a 254 netmask and have just one gateway ?
bpun thanks, i'll take a look.
!webmin
webmin is probably a lame web-based interface for unsafe system administration for Unix. Check it out at http://webmin.com/security.html but, remember, dondelelcaro *hates* webmin. "i'd rather sit on the floor shoving table knives into live
electrical outlets than run webmin on an exposed server." Obsoleted in debian: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/12/msg00790.html, or don't use their .debs, they are of extremely poor quality
micky, i don't know exactly what you're using the two isp connections for.. are you tring to do load balancing?
X is network transparent
puddingpimp_work the idea is that both iternet connections are from the same provider ( not really cooperative thou ) but they cant give more than 4mbit / line cos they`re adsl`s
hm
bpun using 2 because i need more speed and the provider cant boost the main channel
micky, so you probably want to use multi-link no?
ethernet bridging
bpun it doesnt matter as long as i can either ( add a new virtual subnet and have new clients go through that connection ) or do something else ( no idea what )
micky, check out for any packages that offer load-balancing..
micky, so is it ethernet over ADSL or PPPo[AE] half-bridge?
hi all
puddingpimp_work there are 2 adsl routers with ethernet connections in front of the server ( but i can use usb adsl routers to pppo[ae] if required)
micky, ring your isp and find out if they can do PPP-multilink, and look into setting that up
micky, you may also wanto to look into QOS
micky, and make priority rules
micky, if they will only do separate accounts, then use BGP
i would imagine be already QoS since it's adsl and not sdsl
already using*
could be
micky or you can always try to be smart and uncap your isp modem
hmm going to set up a box and another 2 to act as internet servers and 2 for clients and see what i can come up with withouth having to ask my isp to change their stuff
micky, so if you're running a sever(webserver i presume), i see some things in the way..
bpun well the modems are not capped.. the adsl line is in their main telephone exchange unit is
micky, I don't know what your isp is like, but I generally find it easier to ask my ISP to do things properly than build huge kludges which only sometimes work...
bpun no web server, it`s a box used for traffic shaping and routing
how do i get the libc header files for debian etch?
Install them.
puddingpimp_work if i would like my isp to do bgp i would have to go to their hq and doo it myself.. so imagine
name of it
!tell eifzon about search

good one
libc6-dev was the na,e
micky, you have serious problems if your isp can't do BGP :O
see, that was easy wasn't it?
Yeah, sounds about right.
hi all
hehe karsten .)
micky, you probably then want to look into igmp if you have another remote gatepoint..
good evening young sir
young ?
younger than 70
younger than a tortoise
puddingpimp_work they probably have 2-3 admins that set up all the equipment in the country and have ppl with very little computer experience working as tech support..
Hnestly: 1, 20k+ packages in Debian, I don't know 'em all by name, and 2, I don't do a lot of dev work (and/or have libraries already installed).
Thank ye kindly.
and not showing grey (i think)
micky, CHANGE ISP
oh man, i second puddingpimp_work there
Another handy trick to know is auto-apt, particularly when building third-party sources, which can identify referenced files which aren't installed but are known to Debian, and install them for you.
puddingpimp_work i dont have a choice there.. no other isp`s in the whole county
A we bit. Actually copying pics off the camera right now. Shooting mom's garden, which is increadible.
auto-apt update, then when building, auto-apt run
Lots of cicadas.
oh yeh, neat
simonrvn, an ISP that can't do BGP is like a mechanic that can't do oil changes :/
ooh
yup
is nvu (the wysiwyg html) is in package under another name ? i cant find it on the debian search packages page ?
not in debian
hmm, it says i need "kernel-source" now when i am trying to install my nvidia-drivers, how do i get it?
It's been dropped.
puddingpimp_work, isn't he just residential?
Look in snapshots, or IIRC blue?? or apt-cache search html editor.
Standard or phillips?
hello
*groan*
how can i get kmix to start while kde boots MINIMIZED
?
ok thanks simonrvn , karsten
i guess i gonna try the tar.gz from the website
bpun, sounds like it, but where I live you can get ADSL through any of the national providers, anywhere, not really used to this 1 dsl provider, 1 isp shenanigans
heavensrevenge, it's got an option
i wanted to be sure before
I don't know if there's any generalized X way to boot an app minimized. KDE's got a startup feature though.
... otherwise check kmix cli options.
There's also a couple of X scripting languages....
i=0; while [ $i -lt 256 ]; do echo -ne "\033[48;5;${i}m \033[0m"; i=$[$i+1]; sleep 0.001; done; echo

Hrm...
puddingpimp_work, wouldn't it be possible to uncap adsl modems to enforce bgp? hehe
This is a learning experience. Don't be stuck this way again.
!undelete
rumour has it, undelete is great with Midnight Commander (mc). Just unmount the fs and select "Undelete files" in mc, or doesn't work for journalled filesystems.
micky, hey micky maybe you might be able to uncap your dsl modem to provide bgp (just kidding)
o_O
heh
dsl is almost always capped on the other end
the modem just runs at max speed
correction. Have a backup but no way to reach it as the asshole who has it isn't answering either phone or IM's.
bpun hehe
Kevin`: exactly
Your situation's improved somewhat.
checking what dpkg said, but I don't see any way to do what it asks. (never used mc before)
Your problem is now "get asshole to answer phone/IMs". If s/he's a cow-orker, got to boss.
What happens if I dd a 3 gig hdd to a 7 gig hdd, will the partitions tables transfer also? ie, will the 7 gig show as a 3 gig hdd?
It won't work for ext3.
hey sid, when the hell are you going to be stable?!?
Otherwise, read the mc docs.
I've been waiting frikkin forever!
karsten, then why did anyone even mention it?
mount -o remount,ro the filesystem in the meantime.
To raise false hopes.
... also, it *does* work, if you're very lucky, for ext2fs.
my request specified ext3.
it will show as a harddisk with 3gig partitioned space, 5 gig free space
you can mount ext3 as ext2
Right. If you'll note, *I* didn't mention the mc trick.
So I just fdisk it and make a new partition?
That won't let you recover deleted files due to journaling issues.
could i for example have a default gateway for a specific source address ?
yea
true, point taken. *whallops abrotman w/salmon*
hi there, is there a way to upgrade from etch 32bit to etch 64 bit, without reinstalling the whole system? Or at least is there a way for this to be done remotely?
How do i sett my standard eth device?

thanks valdyn, I appreciate the help.
I usually edit /etc/network/interfaces
If it makes you feel any better, work (billion dollar firm) just had a situation where someone who very much knows better managed to nuke a production Oracle DB during a putative OS upgrade (and no, it wasn't me).
... so this shit happens. I've done it myself.
I nuked a linksys router with dd once
"oops.."
Feature!
:P
could i for example have a default gateway 192.168.0.1 for a specific source address 192.168.0.2 and another one 192.168.0.100 for 192.168.0.102 ?
i mean can i have the box do it using iptables or something like that
thats all right but how do I upgrade to 64 bit packages online? are the 64 bit packages called the same than the 32 bit ones? I presume no, so get-selections wont work as usual, am I right?
gAri-: it will work for most packages.
gAri-: not the kernel and very few other things
gAri-, same package names, different compiles.. your foreign, if any, 32-bit packages ought to run on the 64bit machine..
ugAri-, same package names, different compiles.. your foreign, if any, 32-bit packages ought to run on the 64bit machine../u
what does this mean I dont understand
gAri-, software that you bought (32-bit compiles)..
okay how to manage that while the machine is online? I'M really tired to go and make a fresh install
thank you
run implies well, running it, not building it
Hrmm, If I wish to remove KDE - do I just remove it through Synaptic or will I leave a whole bunch of unused files along with it that will not be cleaned up?
start by removing "essential" kde libs
!remove kde
remove kde is, like, aptitude purge kdelibs-data kdelibs4c2a
(somewhere I read its not straightforward to install 64 bit while the machine is online)
hi
i have a little question if anyone cud help, ive installed debian on 2 harddrives with the one having mountpoint / and the other /home , now i want to remove the 2nd hdd and use it for something else, what the best way to move all associations with /home to the other harddisk and format the 2nd
one ??
ooosanteooo just unmount /home and mount it under /mnt/home or other mount point, create /home and copy /mnt/home to /home
and you`re done
don't forget to edit the fstab
but do i have to modify anything in my startup script ?
so that when i restart it keeps the change ?
"startup script"?
bashrc or whatever
ahh sorry
no i wont need to do so actually right ?
you`ll need to edit /etc/fstab to not mount /dev/hdX ( hdX is your second hard drive ) as /home
ok
got it thanks!
ooosanteooo basicly remove the line that has /home in it
yes
says /home busy (naturally) since im logged in as a normal user
shall i use -f ?
My mirror server is good.
he has a 2wk old cop
*copy
no
logout from this account and do as root ?
just log out and do it as root
yup
ok
how can we restore a failed hard disk on a RAID1 ?
swap it for a non-broken hdd, add it back in via mdadm --manage /dev/mdX --add /dev/partition
(make sure the partition size is correct)
thanks

hello
pingouiin, you can use fdisk...
du -f
df
what log can i check to see why or what caused a kernal panic on boot?
ok thanks
kern.log
or type mount
daeos also /var/log/messages is a good one.
that is like dmesg
kern.log can beconfigured in the etc dir to do special logs as well
pingouiin, there's no structures to harddrives
nothing in there except time stamps
hey guys, question, im running debian 2.6 on a media temple gs pkge, trying to config subdomains in my /home/domains/subdomain directories... i can hit my primary domain but im unable to access install.php in my subdir when i point to in via my browser, any ideas? rm -R???
I have an Acer laptop with an Intel 945GM video chipset. What driver should I use for xorg?
/etc/syslog.conf shows all your log file locatations.
what are you trying to do?
to get a kern panic?
i810
If I select "Desktop environment" during the debian install process, what do I get?
im not trying to MAKE one, im trying to find out what *caused* it
abrotman, thanks, it was already installed too
daeos:good plan to not make one, what whappend before you got the kern panic or was the system already in the shape when you got to it?
usually Gnome
i just upgraded my ram from 384 to 768, deb went crazy, then after going back to my ram config before i upgraded, deb runs fine
ahh
so..
i wanted to see *why*
what version of debian
4
etch
right
will that ram work on other OS's?
thanks
maybe a mem issue?
most people don't use tasksel
debian i think will do a memtest
4.0 and up
anybody can show me a sources.list for sid?
daeos:it is in the boot option I think. have to pull out my etch 4 install
if you're running sid .. you should already know how to create one
nono, i want to upgrade from etch to sid..
then what do they use?
!sid upgrade
Sid is NOT AN UPGRADE! Sid is meant for developers and testers, so stay away from it if you're neither. Use stable or testing instead.
aptitude
but i have problems with http://security.debian.org
how is that related to sid?
even for the initial install?
after the install you'd just install what you want
sid don't use this repository?
no
but that's probably the worest reason to update to sid
if you really mean that
oh, ok. thanks again
ok, thanks azeem
bytes
so is there a package i can run to do a memcheck?
or should i just run a mem tester from a cd ?
daeos:it is a boot option
you can run memcheck from the OS if you choose
daeos:part of etch boot install
no special soft needed
bye all
hey guys, do I have to get all of these disks? http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r0/i386/bt-dvd/
ok....
!d-i gat-man
gat-man, you want to go to http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/ Or http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ (if you've got hardware that the
4.0r0 installer doesn't support) for your own good, and everyone else's.
please, it's a simple question, why can't I get a simple answer? do I need 3 disks or just one?
gat-man: we really recommend you just use the netinst
unless you ahve special needs
I do
I will have no internet from next week on
I already have the netinst
now please, answer my question.
if you think you'll need packages from all those DVDs .. then yes .. you'd need all of them
is there a way to intsall debian etch using an usb stick? I only found cdrom images
!usb install
usb-install is, like, Yes, it is possible to boot Debian (sarge) from a USB stick (commonly referred to as a thumbdrive or usb key, among others) as long as your computer BIOS can boot from usb: http://d-i.pascal.at/ or http://wiki.debian.org/USB-HD_Boot_Full_Debian
i hate not having a long enough kvm to control the damn box
so one dvd will NOT install the minimal amount of packages?
thx
sure .. the first
but you don't seem to know which you'll need
and uhm amd64 architecture equals to x86_64 right? when downloading etch
gAri-: yes
it needs to run on a core2duo cpu
thx

anyways, I installed bootsplash and pacthed my kernel. looks b.e.a.utiful! but i notice that the rc init file only has patch for usplash. anyone know of easy way for bootsplash to work in inits? the patch in structions look like they will butcher my init scripts
that made complete sense to kick him
how do I create a user that cannot login, but still has a password?
my thought is to slightly alter the rc init and change the usplash to bootsplash, but the syntax for PROGRESS looks slightly different. anyone been through this before?
set shell to /bin/false and/or set home dir to nonexistant?
that or pam settings
but the user can still login via ssh
i need home dir to exist b/c the users Maildir is in /home/user/Maildir
ya figured that. use pam then. you can setup exceptions for logins for say just ssh or similar
Hello. I have an ssh server, but it doesn't work unless I'm using it from internet (ie: can't do ssh localhost) Any ideas on how to fix this?
check your hostname settings
like make a ssh.deny file and require the user not be in that list for ssh
what should be there?
what does host localhost say?
I also tried both 127.0.0.1 and my local ip (given by my router)
Not Found
is lo up in ifconfig ?
what is a good mac os style panel for kde
No... I must have brought it down accidentally
ya. ifdown -a could do that
shouldn't setting the shell to /bin/false prevent the user from logging in though?
Yeah, I was trying to get iptables to forward traffic to ath0 (wifi card)
for login shells ya, but a daemon can use whatever it wants i think. ssh might have a use login variable though. i dont know unless i check though
lol... and all that breakage just for not having loopback...
good lesson though. bet that wont happen again
indeed
i'd like to be able to create users that can't do anything....they just exist and can access their email (which is why they need to have a password)
in sshd config try set UseLogin yes
Thanks
np
just be sure to double check each daemon for access that you didnt intend. not something you want to forget about when you say enable ftp or something that also avoids shell setting
that's why I was hoping for some sort of no-login option
thats what pam is for really. but its not the easiest thing in the world for a newcomer to play with
can lock root out with one bad line
!ubuntu
yes, ubuntu is based on debian. Still, it has its own packages which are different and they have their own bugs and different ways of working that are unique to ubuntu. If we give you advice here, we could break your system more than it already is. So please, ask #ubuntu - See also based on
debian caveats.
i added UseLogin yes in sshd_conf and then /etc/init.d/ssh restart
user can still login
hmm, that wasn't the effect I was looking for
can pam use some sort of ssh.allow file and then I just put the users I want to have ssh access in to that file
hello friends
maybe that would be easier
hello Growly|VM
is there a reason I don't have libstdc++.so.5 (i have .6) while firefox wants me to have it?
well, i suppose an easier way would be to just force ssh keys on the users and dont get that user access to the authorized keys file
but yes, pam can use files that are parsed for different names and deny/allow based on those files
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could help me troubleshoot this issue, I have a server which is sitting at 3+ load consistently, CPU usage is below 10%, plenty of free ram, nothing using swap... I just can't figure out what's causing the high load
iowait ?
so given the situation, what is your recommendation for what would be easiest to understand/implement
do your users have access to write/upload files anywhere in their home dir?
would you say that if lshw says my ram capacity is 768.. that i can trust that as true and not have an issue with good ram to upgrade?
yes, but I suppose that would not be necessary for email only users
then i would go with forced keys. its good for security and if they cant add files to the authorized_keys file, they cant login
have a link handy for me to read up on them?
on ssh?
i have no idea .. 768MB seems like an odd max
!+listvalues authorized_keys
abrotman, was your 'iowait' aimed at me?
ssh without passwd.
yes
!tell dragonfly about ssh without password
well, as of now, i think ssh, email, and ports 443 & 80 are the only things this box has open to the outside world
its a gateway 2k mobo
3 slots
okay .. then maybe
abrotman, excuse my ignorance, do you know of any commands which I can use to try and see if that's the casE?
of course .. you could just use crucial.com or gateway.com
in top .. is there any %wa ?
yeah i know, i should get the #### from the mobo
ah .. no .. there's a tag or model number on the case somewhere
....except then any time I ssh in from a user that does have access, I need to have the key...might not be such a useful idea for me
abrotman, it's very low, 0.0% most of the time
oh i see.... yeah.. i'll have to find that one
likely on the back or side/top
any of those high ?
i wouldnt dismiss it though, its a very secure setup. even if they watch you type your key with a keylogger or you tell them it, they still cant login without the key
i love apples
abrotman, idle is around 97%+ the majority of the time
and if your root, it dont need to. you just su to that account and do whatever
just need the root key then
abrotman, and now it's up to 4 :/
is anything using a lot of CPU ?
or is a zombie ?
ywell, if you wanna login remotely ya. trust me you DONT want ssh open to the world with only password access and root account enabled. you pick a dictionary password and your rooted overnight
abrotman, nothing that I can see in `top` or `ps`.... top reports 0 zombie processes
where is the setting to disable password access in sshd? i'm not seeing it
how could i disabled root from being logged in via ssh?
nothing is using a lot of CPU ?
disable root logins, and use a normal user to su to root and then su to an account if anything. you just need to add your pub key to each authorized keys file you wanna login with. even better, change the settng and put the authorized keys for each user in a diff dir that nobody has access to
but you
abrotman, nothing at all...
/etc/ssh/sshd_config, PermitRootLogin No
is it always like this ?
abrotman, yes it's not going down, it's staying above 3
then PublikeyAthentication yes, and PasswordAuthentication No
i mean .. the machine has always been like this ?
abrotman, no it's only been like this for about a week
any new packages installed or new kernels ?
how about RSA Authentication?
abrotman, I'm running the vserver kernel and packages now...
abrotman, but after turning the vserver off I still have the problems
key that if you want
not sure what it is
just dont use rhosts
Is there a safe way to reload a kernel module named snd_via82xx that's being used by FireFox without killing FireFox? Or, is there a way to save a flash file that's waiting to be played in Adobe's flash player within FireFox, and then somehow reload and play it after restarting FireFox?
can you boot the regular kernel ?
abrotman, I presume so, it's worth mentioning that I've been runnign the vserver kernel for over 3 months without a problem, only recently did I activate a vserver on it
well, its for protocol v1 only which i would say is insecure
believe there were timing attacks or something for it
ah ..
what if you boot the system without starting the vserver ?
ssh shouldn't kick me out if i reset the daemon right?
no
so long as you do it using the init script, no.
abrotman, I haven't rebooted recently, it's running an IRC hub which is why I try to avoid that when possible... but... if there's nothing else I can try to figure this out then I can do this?
abrotman, you can't think of any other command's or tools to try to figure this out?
sudo /init.d/sshd restart ... something like that right?
ah ok
yerp
disable rsa auth too. no idea why anyone would want that enabled by default
vmstat/iostat/free/top
he, didn't need the 'd' after ssh
rsa auth?
considering protocol 2 is the default, rsa shouldnt ever happen
as in shared key?
dpkg -s iostat
Badgers ate my iostat!
bugger all, i dunno
dpkg -S iostat
iostat: Status: install ok installed
do I need a seperate key for each box that I wish to login from or can I just create 1 and then copy it to my USB drive, etc
one key and copy it
you can just create one, but I suggest carrying it with you on a USB key.
(I also suggest making sure the key has a password, and using ssh-agent to unlock it)
never was a fan of agent
well, i'd have mulitple copies of it (usb key, laptop, both desktops, etc)....and are the keys generated by ssh-keygen different from what would be created by putty using puttygen?
(yes I still use windows boxes many times)
Hello, are there any tools to help me to check which netcard(I have two netcard) is pluged a ethereal line?
I once try to use mii-tool , but find it is not good enough
puttygen syntax is diff, but it can export a auth keys file compatible line you can copy paste
so.... rsa auth.. as in a shared key?
anything wrong with key input?
no, the pub keys is: PubkeyAuthentication yes
ok....and for ssh-keygen, how does that work for who can use it? (the user that created it only? and thus needs to be the same on both machines?)
anyone with shell access can run ssh-keygen, and anyone with access to upload to the AuthorizedKeysFile %h/.ssh/authorized_keys path can add a key
then what is rsa
thus i suggest you switch that to a status dir
google it, for protocol 1, pure rsa auth according to manual
!rsaauthentication
but what determines what user is logged in when logging in using the key?
they still specifiy the user to login as when they connect
ok
i'll experiment
but the system will inform them that passwords are disabled and ask them for a pub key, it then checks in the home dir authorized keys file for that key and allows access after performing some handshakes to verify you have the right key and password to unlock it
but you recommend *not* using it then?
i recommend finding out what it does first i dont know tbh
i think rsa auth is the authorized key access, not sure what pubkey is then :/
anyone know?
seems like RSA is protocol 1 and Pubkey is protocol 2. but that might be wrong
but since debian defaults to only protocol 2, rsa shouldnt be a factor
that sound right?
so then why did you recommend not to have it enabled?
cause protocol 1 sepcific, which i recall having an attack issue to due with timing. basically i say no to protocol 1 and only use 2
with mine disabled i can still use my keys fine
ok with 2 , key input works also right?
im lazy and didn't setup a key for it
yes, pubkey with protocol 2 works fine
is authorized_keys supposed to be a file or directory? is it ok to put it in /etc/ssh/authorized_keys?
i tried enabled protocolo 1,2 but 1 wont start since my host doesnt have a key generated. so i cant test protocol 1 for you
its a file
can anyone recommend an IDE for debian
?
thanks in advance
hehehehe
would seem that ssh in debian only generates the ssh2 hostkeys. so rsa auth should not be possible by default
an IDE for what ?
vim or emacs?
MangosDebian i've never had a problem with it..
Kevin`: with what?
ok then
MangosDebian rsa auth
i'll read over what you told that person earlier about makinga key with putty
and using it
?
Kevin`: you use protocol 1 in ssh?
MangosDebian I sure hope not, it's insecure
Kevin`: then your using Pubkey not RSAAuth setting
ah
Kevin`: the manual specifically says: "This option applies to protocol version 1 only."
and debian only generates a sshv2 set of hostkeys. so unless you specically generated sshv1 keys you cant even use that setting to my understanding
wow, i tell someone to unplug ethernet and they unplug power... how did i get that confused?!!?!?
wow, i tell someone to unplug ethernet and they unplug power... how did i get that confused?!!?!?
i have AuthorizedKeysFile /etc/ssh/authorized_keys
and I copied and pasted my public key into that file
but when I try to log in, i get an error that "server refused our key"
make sure you have no extra lines. the key should be one long line, not split across several
i got this error ; Unable to use key file (not a private key) ( i took out the file path but it tells me this)
i have 1 lan and 2 wan interfaces is there a way i could reroute traffic to a specific port (5050) through the 2nd wan interface while allowing the rest of the traffic to go through the 1st wan interface?
oops
does that include the comment?
eww... i am trying to use an rsa key!
not good
everything should be one line, includeing the user@host and any comments, so yes
so how do i make an ssh2 compatible key?
ssh-keygen does v2 by default
you need -t rsa1 to make a v1 key. and the host needs one generated too
i'm still getting permission denied (public key)
paste your line to me or pastebin
Enter file in which to save the key (/root/.ssh/id_rsa):

hey
does anyone know if I could get visualbasic support on freenode ?
#mono
how can i get clamav to stop spamming my cron output (which gets emailed to me) with warnings that it is out of date?
Guerin
ask #clamav or similar
of course
yes, i suggest you use a password for a key. especially root
I am running debian 4.0 and I have problems with the eth0, it looses connection to often....
what is the syntax to specify a key with ssh
try another nic
man ssh
ok, your authorized_keys file is only read on connect. and i think i know what you did wrong. you put one global key file for every account
thankiu Guerin
im not doing it for root
for mine
i hope you didn't actually ask in #mono
what is nic Guerin???
!nic
rumour has it, nic is (Network Interface Card) The NIC is an add-in board that enables a computer to connect to some form of computer network.. Network Information Center
so i have to have a seperate key for each user?
Guerin na I didn't
you misunderstood what I meant. make a dir mkdir /etc/ssh/authorized_keys, then in that dir, put a filename named by username with the keys.
!nic
nic is probably (Network Interface Card) The NIC is an add-in board that enables a computer to connect to some form of computer network.. Network Information Center
do i need to keep the finger print?
and in sshd_config: AuthorizedKeysFile /etc/ssh/authorized_keys/%u
monkey see, monkey do
yes
what do i do with it
write it down
Guerin I understud you that that is what I have to do to get the info, was I not right?
step 1 in testing hardware is to try a different piece of hardware (if you can)
Guerin one more question if you don't mind
more important is the host fingerprint. when you connect to your home pc, the fingerprint will let you know if someone is pretending to be your server
so get anbother NIC and see if it gives the same problems
ok
Guerin do you have a piercing ?
not any more.
user@domain
its just a hash/checksum of the public key the server sends to you. smaller and easier to verify by humans
same password for each user, but with the keys it don't matter
Guerin if you could tell me the place you had it..
just don't work from putty yet
did you make that dir? /etc/ssh/authorized_keys?
ah like a md5 file.. ok
no...this is with just a file name authorized_keys
then for say user "bob", you would paste his pub key in: /etc/ssh/authorized_keys/bob
Guerin I will do that, I just didn't know if it was a setting or someting on the debian that might do that .. but I will thy new nic, thanks
ya sorry, when you asked about that file, yes it is a file, but when you change the sshd_config, it expects each user to have a file, not one global file
ok
mkdir /etc/ssh/authorized_keys, then add a file for each user under there that matches the user name, and put the key in that
then in sshd_config, use: AuthorizedKeysFile /etc/ssh/authorized_keys/%u
so when bob tries to login, it will look for his keys in: /etc/ssh/authorized_keys/bob
the way you had it, any user with a key in that file could login as any user they specified
how about to keep things a bit simpler as far as key numbers go...../etc/ssh/authorized_keys/authorized_keys then ln -s /etc..../authorized_keys user
then I can use the same key for any user I wish to log in as....I could still do a seperate file for a given user if I wanted to be sure they couldn't log in as one of the other users
that wont work as you expect, simple is the way i pasted
but I can do this for myself to log in as root or a couple other usernames that I use without having multiple keys
hey guys. it's weird. I did "sudo aptitude --purge remove apache" and apache2... but there were still files like /etc/apache and such... shouldn't these be removed already?
well, if you only ever want yourself to have ssh access then it will work fine, but then you only need one authorized key file really
in that case: AuthorizedKeysFile /etc/ssh/authorized_keys, then just make that a file instead of a dir and put your key in it
check my new error
but then if later I decide to give "jim" ssh access i can create a seperate key and in /etc.../authorized_keys/jim
ah, well that works then
then jim would not be able to log in a root or me
hey, you helped me figure that out :P
sounds like you got it all figured out. now go test it
i think im doing this wrong
run ssh-keygen, and just accept the default key filenames and enter a password. thats all you need to do
right
did that
and copied the file contents
and am trying to use it
and i got the error i msgd you
so to go back to my original thing then, I can just use adduser with the default settings and not worry about it because I currently do not have ftp running, and the server runs headless, so the only way to log in to it is through ssh so I shouldn't have to worry about anything,
correct?
why are you copying the key files? daeos
because i do not know what i am suppose to do i suppose..... ?
....except the putty login still does not work
yes thats right. but careful if you ever add another service that would allow them to login as well
if/when I decide to do that, i'll be back here
ls ~/.ssh, what files do you have there? (paste all one line here please)
dragonfly:
any thoughts on the putty login problem? I know it's a windows thing, but just in case
you have to tell putty in the settings to use your keyfile you generated and saved
then save those settings to a name and double click them each time you run putty
did that but it says the server won't accept the key or something along those lines
i used putty gen to make a key, Server refused our key
i've tried in putty and in winscp which uses the putty keys
make sure you restarted ssh on linux. start by testing ssh locally first is probably a good idea
your authorized_key file is probably go bad info then, check the man pages
my ssh support is over now good luck guys
I have restarted and can login using the ssh-keygen key from another linux box
ok, thanks MangosDebian

thanks to you two for helping me solidify my ssh knowledge though, /me bows
I am so disappointed! aptitude remove package still leave files in /etc?
even aptitude --purge package as well
you might need to purge them
purge wont touch modified files or new files you added
purge only removed original unmodified configs iirc
no, it removes all configuration files belonging to a package.
even new and modified ones?
however, you actually have to be purging the package which owns the configuration files, which you may not be doing.
ahh, i stand corrected
new configuration files don't belong to the package; modified ones do, and they should be removed.
ok, that makes sense
which configuration files aren't being removed when you purge a package?
hi what's the difference between /var/spool/mail and /var/amil ?
dondelelcaro, the whole damn /etc dir and there are other places... like /var /usr and such
one is a symlink to the other
dondelelcaro, I tried it out with apt-get --purge remove packages as well which is weird
hmm
dondelelcaro, aptitude remove pacakge definitely removed all involved packages though... but not the darn directories... I just know that when I do a locate.. they're all there.. (I did updatedb first as well)
thanks
quick question why does the mail server first put the email in /var/mail/username and then after read moves it to ~/mbox ?

time to change my passwords
the directories will stay as long as there are files inside of them.
/var for example contains files which don't belong specifically to a package, as well as /etc.
dondelelcaro, oh I know I know
so... what exactly is the problem?
dondelelcaro, I'm talking about specific dirs belonging to the package
directories don't belong to specific packages, actually.
dondelelcaro, /etc/apache /etc/apache2
they're just removed after the last package that uses them is removed/purged, assuming they're empty.
what filenames exist in /etc/apache(2)?
those directories don't belong to a specific package; lots of packages install configuration files into /etc/apache or /etc/apache2, so just removing the apache or apache2 package isn't going to do much.
hmmm. lemme paste the locate file
ls them, just use locate in case your updatedb has issues
don't give us the locate file; just ls -lR those directories.
dondelelcaro:
at this point, im expecting his updatedb is immutable or something silly. in here it wouldnt surprise me
