There are many features that can be tunned up, when it comes to Java and its processes, within VPS hosting environment.
One of the most regular issues are VPS ram availability, which with lack of swap space as a limitation of OpenVZ technologies, represents main problem.
With memory limitation features correctly set, for j2ee server application like JBoss, GlassFish or even servlet container such as Tomcat, many common problems can be avoided.
The downside is that ran-away application or even single process can stop entire VPS host. This is because it'll consume all available ram assigned to VPS account and will prevent other, system required functions.
Some Java servers provides more control over the other ones so it's always the best to try out several releases, like Oracle JRockIt java engine, Sun Java engine or less known IBM Java engine.
